Society of Scottish Landscape Photographers
Monochrome
Starting on September 1st and running until the 28th The Society presents 'Monochrome' ... an exhibition in Black & White. The event will be held at the The Birnam Arts Centre and the centre offered us a remit, all images to be Black & White and a little bit quirky and a certain price point .... A remit we were more than happy to embrace with these images, images that will only ever be this price for this exhibition. Featured in the exhibition are 8 artists, the majority of whom are from the Perthshire/Tayside area and the quality promises to be amazing with a great variation in styles and ideas. We of course hope you can make it to the exhibition but if not this eBook is a preview as well as a sales brochure, images can be purchased and members can be contacted using the links in their profiles. The layout of the book will have a profile image of the member (this took some doing, some of them are shy) and a profile explaining their attitudes and work.... this will be followed by their images and descriptions. We are very proud that we have been partnered in this Exhibition by both Zeiss and Formatt Hitech Filters, two prominent companies in the photography world which shows the quality of the Society and everyone involved. For more info, images and articles please go to www.soslp.com To see any of the images fully framed please contact the artist and they will forward you images of the finished article. We sincerely hope you enjoy this book and we hope to see you in Birnam

Nicky Goodfellow Nicky Goodfellow is an award-winning landscape/nature photographer based in Perthshire, Scotland. She developed an interest in photography at the age of 16 when she attended a photography course at college. Coming from a traditional darkroom background, Nicky now works exclusively with digital. Although her photography and style has evolved throughout the years, she still prefers to use in-camera methods of capture (as opposed to digital manipulation) and uses various photographic filters whilst in the field. She also employs great patience, perseverance and timing waiting for the right light/weather conditions to materialise in order to create her interpretation of the scene. Brought up in the Perthshire countryside, Nicky has a natural affinity towards nature. In addition to capturing the wild and rugged landscapes of Scotland Nicky's true passion lies in portraying the unique beauty of trees and woodlands throughout the seasons. She enjoys nothing more than being absorbed in the magical atmosphere of a woodland environment. From a dark and dank deciduous forest to a solitary delicate Silver Birch; a bark or leaf study; Nicky tries to portray the natural elegance of trees, which is often overlooked by a glancing eye. Nicky's detailed study of decaying holly leaves, entitled 'Beauty in Decay' won her the 'Your View' category in the highly esteemed 'Landscape Photographer of the Year' 2018 awards, and her image was exhibited for a year around the UK. Nicky has also been commended and shortlisted in several major photography awards. Nicky is proud to be working alongside KASE filters UK, manufacturers of high-quality photography filters. "When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence. — Ansel Adams Nicky's work can be found at flickr and on Facebook

Davie Hudson As a self professed Organic Photographer this Exhibition is perfect for Davie's work.Davie is a semi-professional photographer from Dundee in Scotland who specialises in detail and darker work, focussing more on looking down than looking up. Davie's start in photography was film based and focussed on product work before buying a digital camera and taking a drive up the A9 in Scotland, that day changed his life and shifted his focus to nature based phototgraphy. Known for the inability to remain static his photography has evolved over the years from the happy bright landscapes into a style that concentrates on composition and focus to bring the viewer to the point he wants them to see, a focus that is often surrounded by chaos, leaving the viewer holding onto the focal point. Over the last couple of years Davie had used exclusively vintage lenses on his digital cameras and this has taken the inevitable path with him now shooting mostly in film and that will be refected in the images he has chosen for this exhibition. As Davie reflects himself " I needed to slow down and think more and film fitted the bill perfectly. I also realised that I was making my images resemble film so it made sense to shift over to film" As well as being the Chairperson of the Society Davie is also a brand ambassador for Formatt Hitech Filters and this is something he is very proud of.

Untitled I've deliberately left this image untitled to allow the viewer to concoct whatever story their mind sees. This image is at the darker end of my work. Outside frame size 21"x17" ÂŁ95
Inviting Darkness An image I made in the Hermitage, Dunkeld and as I was taking the image I knew how I wanted it to look .... Inviting and yet foreboding and I hope I have achieved that. Outside frame size 17"x21" ÂŁ95
Impermanence This images epitomises my love of the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi which embraces the beauty and impermanence of life, The Cherry Blossom is ideal for this as it lasts about a month but while it is here it is beautiful at all stages of life.Outside frame size 21"x21" ÂŁ95
Homage to Weston This is my interpretation of an image produced by Edward Weston in the 1930's, he was part of the legendary f64 Group. It is also a prime example of the Golden Ratio, a mathematical formula that appear so often in nature. Outside frame size 21"x29" ÂŁ100
Puzzling An image that was used to demonstrate to a client the principles of Depth of Field and to date is my best selling image. The image was taken on the Isle of Skye within shouting distance of Flora Macdonalds cottage. Outside frame size 21"x21" ÂŁ95
Still Life I never set up this image it was just a happy accident whilst walking around the Hermitage, Dunkeld. The image was screaming to look vintage and it very much came out the way I wanted it. Outside frame size 17"x21" ÂŁ95
Frank Many years ago now I took an image of a fuzzy antlered stag who I named Frank and named my company after him. I have captured Frank's image many times over the years so in reality this will be The Son of Frank but i'd like to think that Frank is an honorary title. Outside frame size 21"x17" ÂŁ95
Shifting Light on Beinn a’Chearcaill, Torridon The cloud was playing with us that February day, going up and down at will. The mood and light were constantly changing and I enjoyed the simplicity and wildness of this little scene, taken shortly before reaching the summit.
Frame Size: 20 x 16 in Giclee Print float mounted in a black, wooden frame ÂŁ 110
Lower Falls, Glen Nevis
Taken on a grey, rainy Autumn day in Glen Nevis. The birches had already turned yellow and helped to provide good contrast for a Black & White conversion. What particularly drew my eye was the gracefully leaning birch on the left-hand bank. Frame Size: 16 x16 in Giclee Print float mounted in a black, wooden frame ÂŁ 100
The Needle, Quiraing, Isle of Skye
Strong winds made the last climb up to the needle on the exposed, steep slope difficult. Thankfully it was much calmer once I reached the shelter of the rockface and I could actually enjoy the dramatic view of the Needle. Frame Size: 20 x 16 in Giclee Print float mounted in a black, wooden frame ÂŁ 110
Stone Gate, Findochty Exploring along the coast beside Findochty on a cloudy February Sunrise, I noticed these two stone ‘Pillars’ on a small, rocky beach and they reminded me of a gateway. I used a polariser to show off the boulders on the shore. Frame Size: 20 x 16 in Giclee Print float mounted in a black, wooden frame £ 110
Torridon Wilderness, Beinn an Eoin A Winter view of Beinn an Eoin from the shoulder of Beinn a’ Chearcaill. I liked the texture of the foreground snow and the long rock shadow which seemed to mirror the shape of Beinn an Eoin with its extended ridgeline. Frame Size: 20 x 16 in Giclee Print float mounted in a black, wooden frame £ 110
Andy Clark Andy Clark grew up in a small village in Perthshire. Having spent his childhood in the local woods climbing trees and making dens. It’s fitting perhaps that he still feels at home in the same forests he spent his childhood, but now armed with a camera instead of a stick for a gun.
For the last five years Andy has travelled Scotland and tried to encapsulate some of the wonderful scenes he has witnessed. He feels Scotland is a country unsurpassed for its natural beauty and strives to convey that in his natural images. For this exhibition all of Andy's frames are recycled and repurposed making these images one of a kind, never to be reproduced in this format. Andy is a multi award winning photographer who believes in using natural light, local knowledge and minimal post editing to retain the scene as he remembers it. If you are interested in seeing more of Andy's work, please feel free to visit: www.foxinthesnowphotography.com

Donald MacKenzie In the world of wine there is a French word - ‘terroir’. There is no direct translation from French to English. It means all the bits that, together, make the grape what it is – the soil, climate, location, culture, nature, even the people. The same concept applies to Donald MacKenzie’s photography. He needs to invent a word to describe it. It means that his photography results from the coming together of many factors. These are land, culture, nature, environment, people, history and political beliefs. His attitude and approach to life and therefore photography, is rooted in his history and culture in the highlands of Scotland. A land over which the people who were born, grew up, lived and worked in it, had little or no control. A place where the native population was at the mercy of the land laws that were heavily weighted against them. The images he creates are not an attempt to present a realistic rendition. They aim to convey the feeling, the mood and emotion that he experienced in making that image. There are many influences in his photography. Ansel Adams who was as passionate an environmentalist (before that term was coined) as he was a photographer. Adams’ writings on the interaction of humans with their environment is as relevant today as they were when he wrote them in the middle of the 20th century. Others from whom he has learned are too numerous to mention, but include Fay Godwin, Paul Strand, Paul Gallagher, Michael Pilkington, Guy Tal, Mark Littlejohn. Donald says that the time to give up photography will be when the desire to learn and improve disappears.

Katherine Fotheringham Katherine was born and raised on a farm outside Auchtermuchty, Fife. The freedom and passion for the outdoors that she enjoyed whilst growing up has stayed with her into adulthood and she loves to spend her spare time hill walking and exploring Scotland. Katherine moved to Scone, Perthshire and started to dabble in photography five years ago after joining the Perth Camera Club. It has now become a huge part of her life and she loves to explore the hills and glens of Scotland with her camera in the hope of capturing some of the magical light and weather that Scotland has to offer. Katherine's preferred weather for photography is wild, the wilder the better! She tries to capture this in her photos and hopes that the viewer feels some of what she was feeling as she took the photo. Katherine loves to research the history and old stories behind the places that she photographs. She will spend hours going through old books, reading long forgotten folk tales and she will then try to find the location of these stories. Glen Lyon has become a favourite area of Katherine's. The history associated with the Glen and the hope of being able to capture some of that in a photograph keeps her going back time and time again. Katherine has been Commended in the Landscape Photographer of the Year 2018, Commended in the Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year 2017 and placed third in The Skye Photo Challenge 2017.

The Frandy Tree Glen Devon, Perthshire I had been keen to photograph this tree in snowy conditions and the beast from the east 2018 provided me with the perfect opportunity. A blizzard blew in as soon as I arrived so I took a few quick photographs before beating a hasty retreat back to the warmth of the car. iso 100 28mm F10 1/125 sec Framed in a 26.5 x 20 inch bespoke black frame. Ossian's Hall The Hermitage, Dunkeld, Perthshire I was one of the only cars on the A9 as I made my way in heavy snow to The Hermitage near Dunkeld. I was rewarded by having the place almost to myself and enjoyed the quiet before the snow melted almost as quick as it had fallen. iso 200 45mm F6.3 1/125sec Framed in a 26.5 x 20 inch bespoke black frame. The Praying Hands Glen Lyon, Perthshire The Praying Hands of Mary or Fionn's Rock (said to be split by Fingal's Arrow) sit high on a hill side in Glen Lyon. This strange upright stone is one of my favourite locations to visit and on this particular morning it was made all the more special by a light dusting of snow and the fog flowing down the glen in the distance. iso 100 48mm F11 1/20sec Framed in a 26.5 x 20 inch bespoke black frame. Stuart Lamont Stuart is an Award winning Landscape Photographer based in East Kilbride and has had an interest in Photography since 1973 when he received his first camera for Christmas. For Stuart photography is a relaxing pastime, Its all about being out in nature and capturing the atmosphere of his surroundings, no pressure or deadlines, just stress free photography.
There have been a number of influences on Stuarts photography journey, too many to mention, but one person who has always been at the forefront is Ian Cameron, his ability to capture the essence of a single moment in time is fantastic. Stuart has always enjoyed shooting Black & White photography but wanted to take it a stage further by doing Infrared, the contrasting images infrared produces is very surreal looking and it gives the image another dimension. His philosophy has alway been to relax and enjoy the experience and the photos will follow, also the health benefits of enjoying the great outdoors has had a positive effect on his own well being and he hopes that it will continue into his old age. Stuart was a winner in The Scottish Landscape Photographer Of The Year Competition in 2016 and has also been commended in Landscape Photographer Of The Year Competition. John started to take landscape photography seriously as a hobby in 2012 and since then has been ' chasing the light' all around Scotland, happiest camping out in remote locations or on a mountain summit to catch a stunning sunrise or sunset. John has recently started to add moody monochromes to his catalogue, enjoying the simplicity yet complexity that can be achieved from black and whites. “Everyone can enjoy the beauty around them.
