Wabi-Sabi.... The Japanese aesthetic of imperfection, transience, an almost impossible thing to explain (even by the Japanese themselves) and in my opinion it lends itself to some self expression. With that in mind I see the imperfections in details, in nature ..... because nature is not perfect, or should that be it is perfect in it's imperfections. As a landscape photographer my life is spent looking at the BIG picture, the wide open vista that is often spectacular....but.... when doing this you miss the details that life is made up of, and that's what this little tome is, a collection of intimate detail pictures showing detail, imperfection and nature at it's best. In the last year I have seen my 'style' edge slowly but surely towards this detail driven outlook whilst also adding a darker edge more in line with my personality. A lot of the photographs will feature a sharp focal point and that focal point will represent what my mind is obsessing over at that time. I also think these photographs have the ability to make me feel sad , but as someone said " Sad is happy for deep people" (I think it is from a Doctor Who episode to be honest but it works). This kind of photography is very theraputic because anything that almost forces you to look at the intricacies of nature cements your place in the general scheme of things and promotes calm, quiet and an almost spiritual approach to life. I truly believe there is beauty everywhere and in my photography I will photograph anything that appeals to me, in doing this I hope to make it look beautiful in it's own way. I hope you enjoy the photographs in this book.

Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience. Ralph Waldo Emerson

The unimaginable intricate detail of nature

Through the chaos the cherry blossom gives hope

The way the detritus has fallen almost looks like a Japanese Kanji, I spotted this whilst standing in the River Dee

An old desk left to rot amongst the bluebells in St John's Churchyard, Glencoe makes for the perfect shot.

Rust, the ever glorious rust

For me the ultimate expression of impermanence... the fleeting yet beautiful Cherry Blossom

An imperfect swing makes for a perfect reflection.

A pew from an old disused church in the Highlands gives a great focal point for a picture

I find people are too busy looking up to remember to look down

One leaf makes a valiant attempt to hold on.

Get close, get really close and be amazed at the beauty.

Whilst my workshop client was photographing a waterfall I was more interested in these beatifully rusted bolts.

The perfect spiral caused by cutting metal contrasts with the wood to make a work of art.

There's a subtlety about the colouring in this shot, but I hope that makes people look closer and see the incredible detail.

2 very nautical images and from opposite ends of the boat, one with a very vintage look and one that is almost noir.

Weathered with time, the newspaper is from 1969 and is situated in an unused shed.

Is beauty everywhere? Well, these two were shot behind a bus stop in Perthshire....but... the thing about beauty is you won't find it unless you open your eyes and allow it to happen, so slow down and look around.

Impermanence is such a beautiful thing.

When you apply salt water to things over years

During the months of April and May this is what the inside of my head looks like.

I really am obsessed with the cherry blossom, something so beautiful that only lasts for a month ... it's like the touch of a hand that stays iin your heart forever.

One of my personal favourites, it looks fabulously melancholy in a black frame with off white border... A magnificent onley Puzzle Tree from the Isle of Skye.

Both of these images have very strong focal points to drag you into the important part for me, I love the way the background gives beautiful tone and light.

A test in patience, without taking time to relax and calm myself I would never have achieved the colours of the water. A juxtaposition or a perfect marriage between wood and steel?

The colours say everything you need to know, there is joy in wild flowers.

I think people may be surprised where I took this shot. Rather than shooting the rather large and obvious waterfall I was face down looking at this, I walked away happy.

A walk around a wooded area will give you the most amazing sense of calmness and allows you to take the most evocative photographs. The Japanese refer to this as ShinrinYoku (Forest Bathing) These two were taken within minutes of each other.

These 3 have a connection, it's the tone, the feeling that they have is pure detail.

I don't know why i'm drawn to Spanish Moss, I think it's because it looks so delicate but it's clearly not ..... it survives all weathers and conditions.

The muted colours shown on these images are indicative of the season.... subtle, they aren't in your face. Look hard at them and contemplate the colour that is there on a cold wet winters day.

I often listen to music when I'm out and about and that can influence the mood of the shot. Often I deliberately listen to particular music to determine the mood as I did in this case. Dark, Moody and delicious.

The appeal in these is what they lead to, what was in this old shed? and at the end of the wooden path there is the most amazing beach..... Anticipation is everything.

This is an image of hope, whenever everything appears chaotic and out of control there is always something to be focussed on and held onto.

Movement and Stillness... A simple concept that somehow becomes complex.

Fragility is strength.

On the surface these are 2 simple shots but the tree is pleasingly symmetrical and the gate has been touched by unknown thousands of people, a gate to a woodland area.

Patterns are everywhere, and they are beautiful....

A bridge, to where? Does it matter? A bridge can be a symbol for so many things.

Two things apparently useless for their original use but still beautiful .... is there a life lesson in this, I hope so.
