Monochrome Musings

monochrome a musings production

Until recently I never understood Black and White photography, well it's not that I never understood it I just never produced a lot of it, now it seems it's what i do most of. The realisation seems to be that for me unless the colour is necessary for the image then the the image will be Black and White, which I believe is right. Good Mono photography (which I hope these are) doesn't need colour to make a statement or tell a story. This eBook is a collection of my favourite monochrome images from my portfolio, I hope they have a depth that will make you forget colour. Davie Hudson

The majority of the images were produced with the help of my beloved Formatt Hitech Filters

Black and white is abstract; color is not. Looking at a black and white photograph, you are already looking at a strange world. Joel Sternfeld

To see in color is a delight for the eye but to see in black and white is a delight for the soul – Andri Cauldwell

I think it’s because it was an emotional story, and emotions come through much stronger in black and white. Color is distracting in a way, it pleases the eye but it doesn’t necessarily reach the heart. – Kim Hunter

What I love about Black & White photographs is that they’re more like reading the book than seeing the movie – Jennifer Price

Color is everything, black and white is more.– Dominic Rouse

There is a peace in Black and White, it doesn't scream at you, it slides up and whispers in your ear and you listen because you've seen it's dark side ..... Davie Hudson

You don't make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved. Ansel Adams

Analogue Photography For a long time now I have been using vintage lenses, I like the look they give you, they are not perfect, they have quirks .... dare I say , they have a personality. In January 2019 I had what can only be described as an epiphany, why am I using digital cameras with vintage lenses then editing the images to look like film? I have since started using film cameras and these include a Pentax Spotmatic F from 1973, A Leica C1 for easy carry on the street and a Fuji GA645W Medium Format camera. I am about a month in and loving the process, it gives a tactile nature to the images and a zen like approach in it's thought process ..... you have to think about the images you take as opposed to the scattergun approach that digital can lead you to. The following images are some of the initial images from the aforementioned cameras and are all monochrome.

Thank you looking at these images and reading my musings, whether they made any sense or not.... I hope if you came into this book with an opinion that I have either strengthened your opinion or muddied the waters a little. I 'think' my future lies in Film regarding my own personal work and that excites me a lot.
