The Society of Scottish Landscape Photographers
The Society of Scottish Lanscape Photographers are a group of like minded people dedicated to both the art of photography and the Scottish Landscape. As a group we are relatively young but that does not diminish the quality we have at our disposal, with a number of us being Professional, Award Winners or published photographers and in some cases all 3. I would like this eBook to highlight a selection of the individuals we have, the quality we have and let it stand as both a document and a testiment to what it takes to qualify to join our ranks. If you have aspirations to join then please go to our Facebook page and click join, that will set in motion a process by which the selection is decided. The rules of the group are quite straightforward...... 1. The photographs shown must be of Scottish Landscapes 2. A person must be serious about their photography, that translates into having a facebook page or website. Basically it means that if we cannot see your photographs we won't be able to accept you. 3.We must be able to maintain the quality of the group.... I realise this may seem pretentious and possibly snobby but there are other groups out there for people to work on their craft, just not this one. On this one we have all achieved a certain level of competency and know how relating to camera craft, locations and the problems therein.

Alistair Dick I had a mild interest in photography for many years, but no time to pursue seriously until recently. My interest was re-ignited through looking at all the fabulous images from home and abroad that are more accessible these days, and realising that I might have more time now to take on the challenge of improving my photography, and enjoying the landscape at the same time.

David Mould
I am a self taught photographer, and can be found, most weekends, by a loch or mountain, waiting for a sunrise or change in light that has me returning to favourite haunts again and again. My nine years behind the camera have taken me to some of the most beautiful locations in Scotland, and, using filters to convey mood and light, subtle processing effects to duplicate the vibrance of the scene, I attempt to convey the isolation, elements and beauty to the viewer.

"My philosophy on photography is that folk say a lot of photography is luck, well, I believe that you make your own luck…knowing where the sun rises and sets, knowing when the leaves change colour; luck is all the elements coming together at once… but it is perseverance, repetition and knowledge that puts you in the right place to capture the image.”

Warren Fyffe
I've been a keen photographer for a few years now.....photography has played a part in most of my adult life...from working in dark rooms developing and printing films for customers to getting my first 35mm camera and lens kit....I was they guy that took the photos at gigs, festivals and parties etc....it's great being the guy behind the camera...there's little evidence of the bad hair and fashion style on my part that has been documented.... Music is another passion of mine, spending years playing guitar in various bands. This however had an impact on my photography in as much as I didn't really do anything with my camera at all.....I was too busy chasing the Rock N Roll lifestyle we guitar players tend to want so badly! It was only a three or four years ago that my father handed down his first DSLR to me which lit the fuse again......and I was away......discovering a whole new world of digital photography.....a world so much easier in many ways than the days of film. No longer waiting in anticipation as you opened the paper wallet with your set of 6x4's to see if the long exposure you'd taken of a waterfall had in fact been exposed correctly..... So now we're here.......with some of my recent work....... I feel I have a long journey ahead with so much still to learn and so many places to discover and capture......but it's a journey that I want to share and a journey I intend to enjoy.............

Davie Hudson Photography for me has always been an outlet to express myself and with a deep love of nature I use my cameras to show that. My 'style' is probably heading towards being organic in it's approach and I love the combination of Light and Shade, it's the 2 sides we all have and my photographs take this theme sometime showing more darkness than light. With my love of nature I also conduct tours of the Scottish Highlands mixing photography workshop with an appreciation of the environment and the shared experience of the outdoor life. I am very proud of the fact that people appreciate my work as it is essentially all I am in picture form, it is a very humbling feeling.

Colin Rae
I am a landscape photographer based in Edinburgh: Scotland's beautiful capital city. My location allows me to travel easily to some of the finest scenery in the world. A beautiful photographer's training ground and stepping stone to any budding enthusiast of the outdoors, nature or photography. The love of photography was inspired by the love of the outdoors and sense of adventure. I used mountain biking, camping, hiking and climbing as a passport to escape the daily rat race and to help understand and make the most of life's ephemeral nature. Inspired by this love of the world and the universe, I said goodbye to a relatively safe and promising career to return to the life of learning and exploration. I have always exhibited an obsessive fascination with the universe and nature, whether this be the wonders of the Earth's ecosystem creating some of the finest geography to gaze upon, or an understanding of the universe on a more primal level. Photography, to me, is a way to express this fascination and to share it with others. If I have inspired even one person to get out and appreciate the world we live in, I will have considered my work a success.

Mike Prince
I am a landscape photographer living and working in the Lakes District. I've been taking photographs since the 70's and have been through film in 35mm and medium format developing and printing my own work. Now I work exclusively in digital. Although I live in and photograph the lake District, my heart lies on the west coast of Scotland and among the Hebrides, to me these are the most beautiful places on earth and offer a unique attraction. I like my days moody and my skies stormy - I am equally happy by a loch, the coast or on a mountain summit. The pictures I produce are my interpretation of how the scene looked and felt to me at that moment. They are a combination of the place and my response to it. My website can be found below and through it I sell digital images, prints and provide information about workshops in the Lakes.

Neil Barr “Ever since I was a child living on the edge of town, far up in the hills, I have had a deep love of the outdoors. There is a peace and calmness that comes about when walking through the landscape, often in typical dreich Scottish weather. When my health deteriorated in the summer of 2014, I found relief in those brief spells whilst exploring our hills and lochs. As I would watch the light dance across the landscape, I would try to capture the palpable sense of joy I was feeling to allow me to share it with others.
The huge variety of forms, light and weather that Scotland gifts us creates a multitude of possible canvases. I am particularly interested in those fleeting moments as one weather system moves in and another moves off, that reveals the personality of the landscape. Where the light creates shifting patterns of drama or in some cases a sense of calm, as night turns to day or day turns to dusk. I view myself more as an artist, rather than a photographer. The light is my canvas, the raw material with which to pay homage to the wonders of the natural world.

Robin Parker
My name is Robin Parker and I publish my Photography under the name 'restless lens 57'. I have concentrated on Landscape since getting seriously back into photography in 2013 and, although I have the occasional foray into Portraiture and Abstract, love being out in the wilds of Scotland, endeavouring to capture it's charms. Starting out many moons ago with 35mm B&W film and developing and printing all my own work, I lost touch with it as family and work took over my time. I recently retired from teaching and have found I can devote much more time my passion and, although I don't pretend to approach professional standards, pursue the light wherever it takes me, as often as I can. Night-time photography is a major part of my work as modern digital sensors allow not only the long exposures necessary but crucially the ability to check and correct on the spot and the extra magic of quiet solitude under the stars in the great outdoors makes it the perfect combination for me.

Michael Bryant I was born on the Clyde and brought up on the West Coast of Scotland and now living on the East Coast of Scotland. I always feel privileged to belong to a country with such a wealth of beautiful landscapes and my passion for photography was born of this. I can think of nothing more appealing than being outdoors, taking in the weather and the scenery with my camera in hand. Photography for me is about capturing moments and memories and how these moments made you feel. A great photograph can help to envoke those feelings and take you back to that moment and that is what inspires me to get up at absurd times in the morning to chase the best light, in some of the best environments in the world in any weather! These images are some of my favourite places, I always feel at home in the Highlands and particularly Skye and Glen Coe, two places which really bring home to me the rugged, dramatic beauty of our land. The Trossachs are more picturesque, more beautiful and yet still just as dramatic in heir own way.I hope you enjoy these favourites of mine.
