Park Free for Two Hours Residents and visitors to the Vale are set to receive an early Christmas present after it was confirmed, subject to scrutiny, that they will be able to park for free for two hours every day from this December. It is hoped that the introduction of two hours free parking will provide a boost to businesses. Under the new arrangements the charging period will change to between 8am and 6pm. During this time people wishing to park will need to display a valid ticket, including during the free two hour period.
6th Form has expanded rapidly over the last few years and now has around 150 students. The students want to redecorate, replace the carpet and re-furnish the Common Room. Travis Perkins have generously offered to supply the decorating materials, the students are now looking for other benefactors to provide floor covering and furniture. The Five Alls, Filkins, Nr. Lechlade The moment you walk through the door at The Five Alls, everything about it feels right. From the flagstone floors, exposed timber ceilings and Cotswold stone walls, you get an instant premonition that somehow you are in for a treat!
The Five Alls in Filkins offers contemporary British food in a traditional Cotswold’s Inn. Chef owner, Duncan Ray, formerly with Heston Blumethal at The Fat Duck in Bray, produces a weekly changing menu and is proud to source 90% of ingredients from within a 10 mile radius of Filkins. Set lunch menu £15 for 2 courses A la carte menu available in the evenings.
We had heard good feedback regarding the new proprietor - head chef- Duncan Ray and his partner Manoli Gonzalez – manager. Both have vast experience in restaurant and catering, Duncan having spent many years working in Michelin star restaurants in England and France, including Heston Blumenthal’s “Fat Duck”. Manoli has worked in 5 star restaurants in Mexico, Monte Carlo, Spain and England. Whilst browsing the menu, we were given an aperitif of “Devils on Horseback”, I have not had this for years and had forgotten how scrummy they are. For those of you that don’t know what these sweet and savoury little combos are, basically it’s pitted prune wrapped in bacon and skewered with a cocktail stick to hold it all together. The salty bacon with the sweetness of the prune works perfectly.
Starters of pan fried scallops, caramelised cauliflower puree, ceps, raisins, cumin caramel risotto of beetroot, goat’s cheese croquette. One word - divine!

To follow, our choices were breast of loomswood duck, spiced fig, chestnut, grapes – fillets of lemon sole, roast shallot, thyme and garlic. How the combinations of food worked together was fantastic, combined with the perfect wine choice, recommended by Manoli. To be honest, desserts have never been my thing. I generally struggle with selection, normally opting for the boring old cheeseboard. Boy, I’m glad I didn’t on this occasion, the flavour and textures of orange rice pudding, orange curd, salted butter caramel, peanuts, dark chocolate ice cream and allspice was gorgeous. The Five Alls have managed to create what is best described as British contemporary cuisine at its absolute finest!

The exhibition includes the Christmas Craft Creation Station where you can make and take home angelic angels, a fantastic Father Christmas or create colourful Christmas crackers. Santa, who gets around, will also be in the Brunel Shopping Centre, Swindon, in his grotto between Boots and Marks and Spencer, every day until Christmas eve. If the kids need a break from shopping they can see Santa and his elves for ÂŁ4.50 and receive a gift.

aturday 10th is the Buckland Christmas Festival at Buckland Memorial Hall from 2.30pm - 5pm. There will be Carol
singing, a Christmas Market, gifts, competitions and children's activities, plenty to keep everyone happy. On the 10th, Santa and his elves will also be riding in a special grotto bus at the Oxford Bus Museum where children can receive a special present and have a ride on the jolly bus.

If you are passing through Fernham, take a quick glance at the Woodman Inn car park, I guarantee it will we be packed with cars, this is always a good sign if you are considering dining out. Based on this we decided to give it a try. The choice of food and wine on offer is both extensive and impressive. The decor has been tastefully carried out, creating an extremely warm and inviting vibe. For starters we opted for potted garlic mushrooms, topped with parmesan & herb brioche - homemade on-hand when required, but never obtrusive. We didn’t crab cakes with sweet chilli, spring onion, coriander have much room left for dessert but, the lure of summer berries trifle proved too hard to resist, absolutely delidressing & mixed leaf salad. Followed by baked halibut fillet with baby spinach, cious! caper mash potatoes & spicy tomato mussel sauce - 8oz If you are planning to book a meal for eight or more, the sirloin steak with king prawns, garlic butter, mixed leaf Woodman provides a courtesy minibus service, within a 10 mile radius. The cost is £5.00 each way, donated to salad & hand cut chips. The presentation on each plate was immaculate, with “Help for Heroes” more than generous portions of superb tasting food. On Offering quality cuisine, value for money in lovely suroccasions, a really good meal can be badly let down by roundings, the Woodman has become one of the busipoor table service; this is certainly not the case at the est pubs in the area. Troglodytes troglodytes The wren is a shy antisocial little bird; you are more likely to hear its surprisingly loud song long before you can see it in the garden. With its tiny russet brown body and upright tail darting around they a very difficult to spot. Most of us are familiar with its affectionate nickname jenny wren, which seems suitable for the females, but slightly embarrassing for the lads when playing darts down the pub! (“It’s your round Jenny”) The name Troglodyte means “cave-dweller” in reference to their tendency to forage in dark crevices, feeding mainly on spiders and insects. Despite being elusive, wrens are our most common breeding bird; population is estimated at 8.5 million pairs. The males have quite a tough time when it comes to nest building; they construct several potential open fronted globe shaped dwellings, up to six can be made at any one time, in walls, trees, bushes or banks, put together from leaves, grass and moss. Only when the female has checked out each one and chosen her favourite, will she line the nest with feathers and move in. (that’s why the guys go to the pub!) We have two wrens in our garden, (Jen & Bruce) with a little effort, both can be tempted on the odd occasion to take mealworms or cheese from the bird table. Keep an ear and an eye out for the dumpy little fellows, although we have large numbers scattered around our countryside, cold winters can be devastating for them. C.Row

The Parapet and The Poison Chalice So nimbly, the days of the year dance onward. Growing children across Daringfonia pledge again their fading allegiance to the King in the Red coat and white beard: the younger ones make the same pledge in expectation. The leaves have mostly fallen, late this year. December approaches and with it the New Year. So, what of the New Year? Outside of Daringfonia, the Globe’s population struggles to extricate itself from self-made financial quagmire in which it finds itself. We are hopelessly contaminated but must continue as though we are not. Are we a mini Helenica in need of bailing out? Are we a mini Deutschland intent on stamping our preferences on others? The Red coated King will deliver fewer gifts than usual this Feasting. The elves too, will be on short-time this December! On the other hand, millionaires are made in times of depression and gloom. One man’s loss is another’s gain: every cloud has a silver lining. It’s up to you! Our previous musings have made reference to the High Sheriff in Abingdonia working on behalf of the Nomads. They still seek reparation from the Focal Angels for the use of accommodations to house The Annual Festivities and the closing of the gates to Bullocks & Carts. And all the time their own financial contribution to the Event decreases: to nothing this last year! (They even charged for the use of the “Oxen Diverted” signs!). The Great Festivities increase ever in cost, but the Nomads raise not the smallest of digits to assist with the preparations for the weekend of revelry. This is left to a few dedicated Faringdonians who delight in the joy the Party brings to the townsfolk despite the cost to their pockets. So, what, we wonder, shall happen next July if the Focal Angels are cast into the debtors gaol? Christmas Wreath By hanging a Christmas Wreath on your door, you are in fact carrying on a tradition dating back to ancient Rome, when decorative wreaths were used as a sign of victory and success. After each battle won, the citizens of Rome would make a wreath and hang it on their door, to thank their Gods. Over time, this has evolved into a way of celebrating the birth of Christ, using evergreens as a sign of hope, for the coming of Spring and renewed life These days wreaths come in all shapes and sizes and are often synthetic, mass produced items, that are used year after year. Traditional fresh wreaths can also last a suprisingly long time. One customer claimed that she used hers for 3 years running, as even though the foliage loses its lustre after 3 months or so, the wreath will dry eventually, with the fruits, cones and cinnamon still looking as good as when they were first fixed on. Barros Ruby Port NV, Porto, Portugal Established in 1913 and located in the heart of Portugal’s famed Douro region, Barros is one of the largest and most respected Portugese owned port houses. Traditional grape varieties from the Douro region are used to produce their ruby port. The vines are cultivated on a combination of terraces supported by stone walls and on platforms held by natural slopes on the contours of the hillsides that line the Douro River. After hand harvesting, the grapes are crushed and spend an extended maceration (skin contact) in order to obtain a rich wine in colour, aroma and flavour. Fermentation is arrested by the addition of grape spirit in order to create the sweet wine. The wine is matured in wooden casks (pipes) for 3 years.

Focus On Faringdon CIC Focus On Faringdon CIC works for the benefit of Faringdon. In the past three years it has produced the “Visit Vale” Guide on behalf of the Vale of White Horse District Council; assisted with the Sealed Knot Muster in 2008 and The Faringdon Arts Festivals. It continues to provides secretarial support to “Faringdon Area Project” and to The Faringdon Chamber of Commerce. In it’s work with Faringdon Area Project it organised, had printed and distributed, the publication detailing the outcome of the 2008-2012 Town Health Check. Focus on Faringdon CIC has administered Government funding for the Folly Regeneration Project, the building of Faringdon’s NEW Skate Park and the promotion of the town in The Advertiser and Focus On Faringdon Town Guides.
