Black Cat Archery ranges were first open on October 2010. The company has been trading since May 2010. Andrew took up archery 30 years ago when his father suggested he should join the archery club at his works. Andrew lost interest after a couple of years because of the repetitiveness of a single archery style but a few years later he was introduced to the English Longbow and was hooked once again. This time he decided to try out all archery styles. In 2009 Andrew left his job and started to work on the Black Cat Archery Concept. The idea was to allow everyone to experience the enjoyment of archery without being tied to a single style as he was when he started. Black Cat Archery is set up like a golf club, but for archers. There is a covered practise range, woodland field archery course, an area set aside for up to 90m target range and a field for the longbow / long range shooting . Black Cat Archery, just like golf pro shops, provides training and coaching for all levels of competencies. The site is set up to be accessible for all young, old and disabled. There is a relaxing feel to the site which has beautiful views. Black Cat Archery is not like the usual clubs, where you may be under some peer pressure. You can treat this one like a hobby or as seriously as you wish. 3 Archery clubs operate from Black Cat Archery site, the Companions of the Longbow, The target archery club Sevenhampton Panthers and the Sevenhampton Foresters field archery club. The site is always open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. To shoot around the 24 3D targets will cost £15 which includes training so that you will be safe and reasonably accurate. Fancy a shoot during the week, then call ahead to make the necessary arrangements. Mobile: 07809 729260 I would recommend Black Cat Archery to anyone who wants a family day out including Granny. Black Cat Archery caters for corporate events, parties, serious archers and those who just want to have a go. Andrew is developing a new game that is based on paint balling but with bows and arrows. It is called Archery Tag and its coming very soon! www.blackcatarchery.com Email:andrew@blackcatarchery.com Roves Farm, Sevenhampton, Highworth, Swindon SN6 7QG
Good News on the Roads! The Department Of Transport issued the statistics for road accidents for Great Britain this summer for the previous year. They confirmed the continuing trend downwards from an average 319,928 in the late 90’s to 222,146 in 2009 to 208,628 2010. In most walks of life, training, and re-training, are common occurrences. Driving is one area where most of us don’t get that extra training. After passing the driving test the rest of our driving lives are spent learning by experience. Bearing in mind that we are in control of a potentially lethal piece of machinery, is this a good idea? When driving, do you ever find yourself: Ø
Having to brake sharply?
Ø
Creeping above the speed limit?
Ø
Driving too close to the car ahead?
Ø
Feeling anxious, tense or intimidated?
Ø
Regretting what you’ve just done? (e.g. accelerated through an amber light) If so maybe you too could benefit from advanced training
You can do something about it for a modest amount of your money and your time. There is a local group of volunteer tutors who will spend the time to assess your skills on the road on a one to one basis and suggest ways to make you safer. The Group is the: - North Wiltshire RoSPA Advanced Drivers And Riders The training is based on the Police Driving and Riding manuals and is given by tutors who are regularly tested by examiners qualified to Police Class 1 standard. The Blowing Stone www.theblowingstone.co.uk • 01367 820288
On hearing that the Blowing Stone Pub in Kingston Lisle had won the ‘Oxfordshire Dining Pub of the Year’ award in the Good Pub Guide, my first reaction was to be rather pleased for the landlord and landlady, Angus and Stephanie Tucker. I had always reckoned on their running of the White Horse when they were there. Furthermore, I was familiar with the works of their chef Robbie Ellis, whose culinary talents I had previously sampled some years ago at the Trout at Tadpole Bridge. To reward the guys for their achievement (and indeed to satisfy the hungry gastronome in me) I hot-footed it over to see what was going on and have a spot of lunch. The Blowing Stone is not the prettiest building in Kingston Lisle, which does have some seriously lovely housing stock; it does however, boast a well tended garden and is looking the best it can. Inside the pub has been subtly ‘done up’ in a gentle, modern but very comfortable and tasteful style –on the walls there are some gorgeous photos of the area, a few very appealing paintings and some scary pictures of horses getting racing wrong. There are candles everywhere and the competent staff offered a very warm welcome. I enjoyed reading through the menu, which offered a brilliant choice of pub classics and some quite highfalutin stuff.
For starter, I chose the spicy marinated chicken satay with a peanut dipping sauce, this was delicious, the meat succulent and satisfyingly spicy with a good consistency of dipping sauce. I followed this with a smoked haddock risotto with a poached egg, this too was scrummy. Not the creamiest but possibly one of the tastiest, obviously made with good stock and large chunks of fish and enhanced considerably by leek which was not mentioned but a classic and indeed my preferred partner. The poached egg oozed perfectly when I broke into it. To round off my lunch, I chose sticky toffee pudding, toffee sauce & ice cream. I am not really a ‘pudding sort of girl’ but this was moist and rich without being too sweet, I actually devoured the lot – enough said! I would recommend this place to anyone, it is not cheapest but it is a long way away from being expensive. There is a good wine list and a selection of real ales that are kept properly. If you want to go out and eat, it should be better than you could make at home, I could cook all of this but I could not have got it all ‘so right’, I didn’t have to deal with getting the ingredients, it was delivered with charm and I didn’t even have to load the dishwasher – money wisely spent!

Bringing In the Harvest As local roads bustle with tractors hauling various freshly harvested crops, I embarked on a day of harvesting a crop not considered common or conventional in this country – grapes! The English wine industry has emerged as serious business over the past 10 years, increasing substantially in quality and popularity, fuelled by patriotism from events such as the Royal Wedding as well as a string of accolades and awards. Further opportunity will arise in 2012, with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations and the Olympics. Wine producers positioning themselves to maximise this opportunity are Bob and Carol Nielson of Brightwell Vineyard based in Shillingford near Wallingford, Oxfordshire. This vintage will be their first making their wines in their newly equipped winery, having previously outsourced this facet of production. For Carol, this was the way forward for their business. She feels that this investment will give them the ability to produce wines that are true to the varietal expression of the grapes and furthermore, their vineyard. They have contracted the skill of Australian winemaker, Penny Sear, who comes with extensive experience and an impressive résumé, having worked with top wineries in the Yarra Valley (Victoria) and Hunter Valley (New South Wales). It was at Brightwell that I answered the call of duty and picked up the secateurs for the day. The weather was sunny and fresh (last years pickers told tales of freezing conditions) and I formed part of a team of 20 volunteers. We harvested huxelrebe, a crossing that originated from Germany and gives (according to Jancis Robinson’s Wine Companion) flavours of musk, with honey and raisins. Bob Neilsen points out that this variety has been categorized on its own as it is so unlike the flavour profile of ‘main stream’ white varieties and he is pleased with the minerality their grapes show. The harvested huxelrebe will form part of the blend for their Oxford Flint, along with chardonnay. The vines are trained on trellises that are at chest height, alleviating any potential back complaints and the feeling of being ‘at one’ with nature relatively high (bringing out the Earth Mother in me!) as one picked the fruits of the harvest. The comradery amongst the team of pickers both new and experienced was enjoyable as friendly chats were shared amongst the vines. We harvested until 1.30pm (with a coffee break at 11am) and were rewarded with a hot home cooked lunch served with wine (YIPEE!).
I look forward to tasting the grapes I helped harvest when the 2011 vintage is bottled and released next June!

ou cannot help notice the Faringdon - Le Mele Sur Sarthe Ylinks our town has with Le Mele. The town sign on the Coxwell Road is the most obvious but there are several other clues around the town. Le Mele-sur-Sarthe is situated in lower Normandy in the department of Orne. It is an area that is similar to Faringdon Twinning Association Oxfordshire with rolling hills and lush farmland. The twinning association is a thriving organisation and includes “original twinners” and newer members. There is a strong youth section and all of us enjoy the warmth and friendship of our neighbours across the channel. We are always looking for new members so if you are interested in finding out more about the organisation, and the programme of events that we run throughout the year, contact : Chairman David Williamson on 01367 240033 or Secretary Jeanie Pugh on 01367 240374.

Winter Freeze Hint and tips for keeping your home in good shape for the winter Going away this winter?
Want to keep on top of things?
• Beware of lowering the heating too much. It may save on the heating bill, but is it worth the risk of a frozen pipe? Leave your central heating on low at around 15°c to prevent existing water from freezing. • An alternative solution, particularly in the event of extended absence from your home, is to drain the plumbing system entirely. Seek professional advice should you consider this appropriate. • Ensure that pipes in unheated areas like lofts and, where accessible, under floor spaces are insulated with high quality foam lagging. • Water tanks in lofts should also be insulated, but avoid insulating under the tank as heat from the house will help prevent it from freezing. • Have someone keep an eye on your home, and ensure they know where the stopcock is should they find a leak.
Year-round maintenance will reap rewards come winter, so; • Try to make a routine of checking plumbing joints for leaks every so often, remembering those which are hidden such as on dishwashers and washing machines. During inspections keep an eye out for green discolouration on copper pipes as this suggests a leak, and pay special attention to plastic plumbing joints as they erode quicker than metal ones. • Insulate your loft to protect pipes and, in severe winter conditions, consider leaving your loft door open to heat the space. • Prevent your stopcock from stiffening by testing it from time to time. • Make regular inspections of water tank ball valves for signs of erosion. • Try not to procrastinate! Fix even slight leaks as soon as possible to avoid more serious issues later. • During winter, keep a close eye out for frozen pipes; tell tale signs include no water coming from the faucet, frost or ice on the outside of the pipe, and bulging of the pipe.
Home improvements in the pipeline? If planning any DIY, consider the following; • Avoid drilling or hammering nails in to pipes by using a pipe detection device; you can’t always predict where pipes are located! • Try to source all plumbing materials from the same supplier, particularly when working with plastic plumbing as it is more prone to slight gaps in joints and fittings. • If working in a ‘water zone’ area, such as a shower tray, make seals and joints as watertight and sturdy as possible.
Discovered a frozen pipe? If you act fast, a frozen pipe does not always mean a burst pipe; • Turn off the stopcock. • Remove any furniture or equipment from the area which may get damaged by melting ice and water. • Open the tap closest to the area, and begin gently warming the pipe with a hairdryer or hot water bottle, starting from the end closest to the tap and working away. • Remember, although damage to pipes occurs when they freeze, bursts only become apparent when the pipe begins to thaw.
Sprung a leak? • Turn off the stopcock and drain the system by opening taps in baths and sinks. • Seek professional assistance in accordance with your broker’s guidelines

Autumnal Tranquility Can a tree be fairly described as a Sentinel? Can a tree simultaneously display autumn leaves and spring blossom? Has man discovered something that travels faster than the speed of light? The first weekend of October saw these questions posed as nature appeared to turn our understanding of its laws upside down. On land mentioned in the Domesday Audit of 1086, nestling beneath the imposing tower of the medieval church at the heart of Highworth, natures’ wild life abounds. Feathered predators hovered effortlessly over sparse cover for small furry animals; Rooks, or are they Crows (who can tell at a distance?), forage for earthworms in flocks so great the Poa grass resembles a truly ‘Black Sea’; Hares coast along open fairways and Rabbits thrive amidst the hedgerows where they stay safe from men with ill-intent for their future! What is truly amazing is that this haven of nature’s rich tapestry is enhanced by humans relaxing and enjoying the unheard of warmth so close to Halloween. Cool drinks, the swish of golf clubs, and a murmur of pleasure at nature’s magnanimity of providing such unexpected, but physically welcome, amenity. Nature nurtures Oak Trees which warrant the description – Sentinel Guardians, like the Seven Hills of Rome, of a gateway to human contentment. Nature allows the ‘impossible’ to occur, whether it is trees or mere science. We ‘advanced’ humans need to remember that we can only try to understand the wonders of nature and that we still, in 2011, have much to discover. Whilst understanding nature can be difficult, appreciating the wonders of nature is not. On ancient land between Highworth and Inglesham such simple pleasure abounds for anyone with an open mind, leisure time and a desire to admire.

FRAMING THE LETTERS PATENT FOR ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT It was my honour to be asked to frame the Letters Patent for what is now Royal Wootton Bassett. This is one of only 3 in history to be awarded and the first one for over a hundred years. It came with a huge responsibility to get it framed to the highest conservation specification and delivered on time.
Sur Ilett
The wording is written on vellum which is susceptible to humidity levels so that was my first consideration, that over the years the vellum has to be protected and preserved. Secondly, how was I going to mount it securely but within all the laws of conservation? I had to build a case around the Letters of Patent due to the depths of the seal and then frame the case. All museum quality materials and methods were used to ensure that the Letters Patent is protected for many years to come. The Princess Royal unveiled the Letters Patent in a ceremony on Sunday 16th October and if you saw the television reports you will have seen how dramatic it looked and how the framing enhanced it perfectly. Birdie Tales Robin
(Erithacus rubecula) By the time you read this little bird ditty, it will only be eight weeks or so until Christmas. And of course the bird that will adorn most of our Christmas cards and wrapping paper is my feisty garden favourite “The Robin". Robins can be very territorial and aggressive towards other birds, particularly during the breeding season or when food is scarce, but in my opinion, they are the most human friendly of all. We have two robins in our back garden (Batman & Dobyn)whom I am trying to entice to eat meal worms from my hand. You need to be patient (which I'm not) and spend time gaining their trust for this to work, I will let you know how it goes. The robin is one of the earliest birds to nest, it's usually during March but, if the winter has been mild, can breed as early as January. We have all heard stories of robins nesting in weird and random locations like watering cans, hanging baskets and old boots. One of the best nesting tales I can remember is from an old local gardener, (Bob the parsnip) who swore blind that when he was digging over his allotment during the spring, he got a bit of a sweat on, so he took his jacket off and hung it on a fence post, forgetting to take it home that evening, he returned a few days later to find a robin nest with five eggs in its pocket. They are a tiny little dumpy bird, with the thinnest legs you will ever see, (apart from Stoke footballer - Peter Crouch) but have you noticed that whenever a robin appears in your garden, how photogenic they are? It doesn't matter how busy you are or what you are doing, they just make you stop and notice! With its prominent red breast, melodic song and distinctive little hops, the robin is a well known and much loved garden companion. C.Row

Portwell Angel Tel: 01367 248030 • Email: portwellangel@gmail.co.uk • www.portwellangel.co.uk One of our recent bright sunny days called for a lunch out and the flavour of the the day was for something light yet tasty… Having heard about the ‘slates’ available at the Portwell Angel, we thought it would be worth checking them out. It can be reported that there are a range of slates (which refer to the boards on which the food is served), you can choose from: Ÿ The Greek Slate, boasting a range of dips; taramosalata, tzatziki and houmous with mixed olives (£6.60). Ÿ The Dipping Slate comprising of olive oil with Faringdon’s own Gilly’s balsamic vinegar, salsa and guacamole (also £6.60). Ÿ The Anti-Pasti Slate with an International selection of cured cold meats, sun dried tomatoes and olives (£7.50). Ÿ Or the Fish Slate, presenting Scottish Smoked Salmon, peppered smoked mackerel, superior fish pâté (which is regularly altered) and tiger prawns (£8). All platters are served with a salad garnish and warmed pitta bread or ciabatta. We ordered the Greek slate and the Anti-Pasti slate as well as a Quesadilla Tortilla (£6.10 for one or £10.05 for two) which is a grilled tortilla brushed with olive oil and filled with cured ham, jalapeño peppers, grated cheese, spring onions and coriander. The food arrived promptly and was beautifully presented, with more than ample for the two of us! Everything was freshly prepared and the flavours certainly surpassed our expectations! The best thing (well there were a few best things to be truthful!) about the slates are that they are great to share which
alleviates any ‘meal envy’ (which is wishing you ordered what the other person had)! It is also quite social, in that you could quite easily nibble away at a platter amongst a group of you whilst out for drinks. Most importantly, I appreciated the fond holiday memories abroad this style of food evokes bringing the continent to Faringdon! I noticed that there was a range of hot food on the menu which is becoming more on the agenda as the weather draws in. Beef chilli con carne and Thai green chicken (both £9.10) to a range of jacket potatoes. For something more ‘lunchy’ there is a selection of sandwiches, bagels, panninis or ciabattas and a host of fillings with prices ranging from £2.95 £4.35. For the little ones, beans or spaghetti on toast is available at £2.65 or they can have a ham or cheese Ploughman’s priced at £3.70. Another option is to piece together a children’s hamper (£3.70), selecting 5 items from a sandwich, raisins, a drink, flapjack and fruit. A culinary experience worth recommending as it has something to offer one and all! REVIEWS
