Bill Grant has been keen to paint and draw since childhood, but it is only since retirement that he has been able to devote time to the interest. He has tried just about all the many media, and styles, and a selection of his work is included in the display in the Portwell Angel. The picture illustrated on the cover is an attempt to show a pleasant and mellow autumn scene with some exciting contrasts.

Faringdon Chamber of Commerce The Faringdon Chamber of Commerce is a keen supporter and contributor to the Our Faringdon Our Future team working on the development strategy for Faringdon to 2026. By analysing past and future numbers of jobs that could be created within Faringdon, the Chamber would like to recommend: · Encouragement of entrepreneurship within Faringdon from all sectors of the community e.g. houses designed to encourage business leaders to be based locally and for entrepreneurs to start up home based businesses prior to relocating to more permanent premises · An improvement to the access road into Faringdon along Park Road through the re-development of Regal Way and Pioneer Road. · A new, large employment site that will accommodate the industrial land lost to Tesco and also help the transition and growth of existing industrial businesses within Faringdon. · An increase in at least 20,000 sq. ft. of retail offering. It can be argued that the arrival of Tesco sees a large percentage of this taking place. This should not be at the expense of employment land and any employment land lost to other uses, such as retail or housing, must be found elsewhere. · An increase in town centre offices, which should not be at the expense of retail space and could be based at the Faringdon House development off Gloucester Road. If you would like to become a member of Faringdon Chamber of Commerce and have a say in issues such as these then contact Jane Haynes on 01367 246130 or come along to a meeting and find out more. The next meeting will be on Monday 10th October.
The Chamber of Commerce would like to wish Simone and her team at Party Magic the very best of luck with their new shop in Coxwell Street. Read more about Party Magic on page 5.
Faringdon Business Breakfast Faringdon Business Breakfast Club (FBBC) attracted almost 30 local businesses to the Sudbury House Hotel on Monday 5th September for it’s monthly networking event. After the usual hearty breakfast and an introduction from Club Chairman, Paul Brame, each delegate spoke for 60 seconds about their activities and the kind of referral they are looking for. Many attendees seem to have more than one business interest and did well to cram their pitch into 60 seconds; Jonathan Rees-Russell talked not only about his accountancy practice but also his on-line food and drink business; Andrew Hoon talked about career change consultancy and venison sausages; Derek Gale brought magic into his talk about photography. David Burn likened his Marketing Business to a Swiss Army Penknife - the right tool for the right job at the right time and Chairman Paul Brame finished things off as usual with an amusing poem. After the 60 second round, guest speaker Lisa Whiteside of House of Colour provided a very educational talk on Sumptuary Law - the importance of dressing for the occasion and choosing the correct colour scheme to match an individual's hair and skin tones. The next meeting of FBBC is on Monday 3rd October and the speaker is Paul Brame, we understand that Paul may be bringing a guest with him. Party Magic has a selection of decorations, costumes and accessories in store but can also order in any extra specific themed goodies to complete your vision for the perfect occasion. Simone lives in Faringdon with her family after moving from South Africa nine years ago. She recently decided to leave her job as a senior manager in fashion retail after years of long commuting was taking its toll on family life. Simone said: “I never had time for my family and I was always working. I wanted to start a business in Faringdon so that I could be involved in the local community and be closer to my kids, who are thrilled by the change.” Simone had a similar party shop when she lived in South Africa and so the idea to start up a similar business in Faringdon came naturally. Simone said: “I am starting small but I am confident that once word starts to spread that Party Magic will succeed, we are already doing well.” Party Magic has two bouncy castles for hire at competitive prices and can also create balloon decorations for any occasion including arches and gazebos on request.

A Lack of Understanding Daringfonians are a complicated bunch and it seems unlikely that Tesco will be allowed to join the group until they have been here for three generations. Such is the way of small towns and villages. Much has been said about Tesco coming to town; I wonder who has thought their way through what will actually happen (and what will not) when Tesco arrives? Tesco, in Town, will offer a duplicate shopping experience to that already available. They will sell the same range of groceries as already available. They will sell a number of other non- food items – that are already available. Will they offer anything new? It would seem not. Will they offer a wider choice? With the same amount of shelf space that already exists in Faringdon, it seems unlikely.
Tesco taking root in Park Road does offer an opportunity. In bidding for planning permission they have made promises to contribute toward the well- being of the town. The Town Council who supported the Tesco Application did so subject to certain conditions. They must make sure that those conditions are met. We still have the opportunity to make the centre of Faringdon an interesting place and a unique place to visit: for both those who live in Faringdon – and those who do not.
It is a pity that Pure Me has closed its doors for it is specialist shops like this Will they offer cheaper prices? Possibly, but only whilst there is competition. that will encourage people into the town and we need more of them to (They are a successful business and profit is the goal above all else.)** create a thriving town centre. We now have several empty shops and, following Tesco’s success, there will soon be more. So who do we know Will they stop Daringfonians from leaving town for their weekly shop? Of who is brave enough to take up the empty shops: to take part in starting course not as they will not be able to offer the range of goods required and something special? readily available, out of town, to those with transport. We wish Simone at Party Magic every success in her new venture in Great Coxwell Street. Will they encourage others from outside the town to visit? Of course not as better What, I wonder, can Tesco do to help? It would clearly be in their interest to alternatives are already available in help as whilst it seems unlikely that Tesco shoppers will walk into town it is Wantage, Swindon and Witney. possible that visitors to the town might visit Tesco when leaving. However, every cloud has a silver lining – so let us look for one here. Faringdon is a nice town to live in – and to work in. There are some 900 businesses in and around Faringdon: we must make sure we support them. But we must also ask them to support their local business community.
** Consider this: If Tesco sell 100,000 items per week they will increase their annual profits by £50,000 per annum every time they add just one penny to each item. None of that profit will stay in the land of the Daringfonians and if there is no competition they will add that extra penny or two. Wouldn’t you?

We decided to try this out for ourselves.… On entering the hotel we received a warm welcome from the restaurant manager, Benjamin Petit, who promptly served us a delicious award winning cocktail. His understanding and vast knowledge of which wine to serve with each course is amazing, coupled with a totally contagious enthusiasm.
If you are considering an evening booking for the Tasting Menu, (and I highly recommend you do) allow plenty of time to experience this extravaganza, it's well worth it!

Alternative therapy helps families to grow German trained alternative therapist, Monika Becker, specialises in fertility treatment and has helped many women to conceive through the use of acupuncture. Monika gets most of her clients through personal recommendations including one woman in her early forties who was anxious that she did not have much time left to conceive. Monika said: “After three miscarriages, each in the early stages of her pregnancies, my client had been desperate for a second child. A friend of hers, who had herself had successful fertility treatment at my practice suggested she should see me. After eight weekly sessions the woman has now become pregnant and is now into week 12 of her pregnancy and the progress looks promising.” Acupuncture treatment to aid fertility is only part of the range of treatments that Monika offers. As a German-trained alternative therapist (Heilpraktikerin), Monika is trained in acupuncture, DORN Therapy, Hypnotherapy and Past Life Therapy, among others. In Germany, the training as a practitioner for alternative therapies is heavily regulated and involves three years medical training after which the prospective therapists study their chosen alternative or complementary method for, usually, another two years. Monika also specialises in non-surgical bunion therapy and treatment of fears and phobias as well as a range of other conditions at her practice in a quiet, easily accessible location at Grove Technology Park. Has anyone noticed the large number of crows flying towards the Folly Tower each evening, just before it gets dark? Being residents of Tuckers Road, we are right in their flight path as they return home to roost. If you take a closer look, the birds vary in size and speed of flight, it's a mixture of crows, rooks and jackdaws. Two of the jackdaws, (Jack & Dawn), call in for a snack in the garden before bedtime every night. Jackdaws are often interpreted as rogues, rather like the magpie, they are an extremely inquisitive and intelligent bird with piercing pale blue eyes. They are the smallest of the crow family, feeding mainly on insects, worms, fruit and berries, but like the magpie, will take small chicks and eggs. There are numerous stories of jackdaws stealing wedding rings, small jewellery items and anything shiny from window ledges or garden tables. I have tried unsuccessfully to prove this, tempting them with ring-pulls, earrings, silver foil and small coins, all to no avail. (I'm sure my neighbour thinks I've lost it!) What is surprising though, is their fascination with prawns, yes prawns! Quite why a jackdaw would want to take home a bundle of prawns of an evening is a bit strange, but they keep doing it.
enquiry@longcotkingandqueen.com
You are probably wondering, why is this bloke putting prawns out for jackdaws? Has he been sniffing too much birdseed? It was purely by accident, we tend to keep scraps for all the garden birds and our pet hedgehog, (Andy), so after a late night consuming prawn curry, I put the leftovers on the bird table. The following evening J & D swept in and gathered them all up, it took several attempts, but Jack managed five. I can only presume they are eating the prawns, not building a bright pink nest with them? The funny thing is, if they drop in and I have not put any curried prawns out for them, they turn their beaks up at all the other offerings? A friendly word of caution, I like my curry hot,' the hotter the better' so if you spot the jackdaw duo flying over town, please don't look up!

LOCAL STARS SHINE & RAISE £4,000 AT GRAND MACMILLAN ANNUAL SHOW!! An X Factor star & Macmillan joined forces on Saturday 10th September to raise a staggering £4,000 for the Cancer Charity!! Ron Crutcher organised the tremendous show at the prestigious Cornerstone Arts Centre in aid of the Macmillan Cancer Charity. The show included 2009 X Factor finalist Danyl Johnson, along with a wealth of super talented youths from the local community, which included 12 year old Nina Jade & 13 year old Ebony Cantwell from Wantage & 15 year old Eleanor Williams from Faringdon. The show was hosted by up and coming local celebrity Comedian Matt Richardson and was a huge success, so much so that the Macmillan trust immediately commissioned Ron to organise the 2012 event, which will be covered by their £10 million liability insurance and is certainly some recommendation!!
sales@FMCparts.co.uk www.FMCparts.co.uk
Julian Knowles from the Macmillan Trust commented "I loved the Grand Macmillan Annual Show and had a fantastic night. I was very impressed with of all the talent from the show and was amazed at the professionalism, energy, enthusiasm and sheer quality of every single one of the acts. When you consider that so many of the acts are from the Didcot area and were of such young age, it makes their performances all the more remarkable. Its testament to all of the hard work of Ron Crutcher and his dedicated band of helpers that this inaugural event was such a success. Ron should be justifiably proud for organising such a crowdpleasing event. He’s set a great foundation for what could be a fantastic annual showcase of Oxfordshire talent."

The Gorgeous You Waiting in Your Wardrobe Are you a woman who has a shop-full of clothes in her wardrobe and nothing to wear? Are the mornings a never-ending battle to assemble a half decent outfit? Then introduce yourself to JoJo and the art of creative dressing. JoJo, the creator of OpenTheWardrobe, helps everyday women to optimise their existing clothes collection to make them look and feel as good as they deserve to. JoJo said: “I had an idea that I would like to do something for other women. By combining my lifelong love affair with beautiful colours and clothing, I want to make them aware of how wonderful it is to feel good, look good and be told you look good.” JoJo was brought up in Germany by artistic parents, constantly surrounded by art, classical music, colours and textures. During the seventies she decided to move from London to the countryside, came across the name “The Vale of the White Horse” and fell in love with the Vale. Accessorising and coordinating wonderful colours, mixing and matching of clothing has become her passion. JoJo said: “In recent times I have become a collector of dangles and bangles, rings and earrings, scarves and shoes, not forgetting the handbags of all shapes and sizes.” JoJo’s services include a free initial consultation, followed by a full or half-day wardrobe makeover. After sorting, and that means “nothing hidden in the back of the cupboard” and making up a nice bag for the Charity shop of your choice, utilising and matching items already there, you are then guided towards targeted shopping, to develop your personal style and confidence in what you wear. JoJo said: “We help you to arrive at a point where your essence is discovered, you stop “picking things up at random” but learn to look for items to add to and enhance your wardrobe, building a collection of clothes and accessories which will work for you. Open The Wardrobe was born of the desire to help normal, ordinary, every-day women. After all, there is nothing wrong with being 30 plus and a size 16?” JoJo offers assisted shopping as well as ongoing advice. Styling for that special event, weddings and parties or a day at the races is also available. We also offer “makeover” parties. Would like to welcome Suzy Parsonson Suzy Parsonson has recently joined Angel Wilkins in Wantage. Suzy is a solicitor specialising in the administration of estates, the preparation of Wills and the growing area of advice in regard to the system of Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs). ·
What is a Lasting Power of Attorney?
An LPA is a document that lets you appoint someone to make decisions about your welfare or property. LPAs allow you to appoint someone that you trust as an “attorney” to make decisions on your behalf for a time when you no longer wish to, or do not have the ability to, make such decisions.
·
When should an LPA be made?
There is no “right time” to decide when an LPA should be created, but not leaving it too late is vital. Should you lose the ability to make decisions (due to illness or injury) and you don’t have an LPA in place, an Order from the Court of Protection may be required to manage your affairs. This will inevitably cause delays and increase costs for your family and ultimately may result in decisions being made that you would not have wanted. Once an LPA is signed, it can be stored for any number of years and be activated only when it is needed. Many people put the documents in place while they are reviewing their Wills.
·
What types of LPA are there and what do they do?
Suzy Parsonson

Is there a risk in giving an attorney these powers?

Wine Review The Right Blend In the wine world, the term ‘blend’ is often used in reference to a wine that is made from two or more parcels of different grape varieties. Each grape variety contributes various flavours and structural attributes to the blend. The most famous example of blended wines are the great red wines of Bordeaux, produced from up to 5 different grape varieties; merlot, cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot, cabernet franc and occasionally malbec. The proportions used are dependent on the Chateau, as some varieties grow better in one area than another. Blending allows the winemaker to develop a signature style where each grape variety brings their traits to the wine in order to ‘fill the gap’ where another variety may be lacking. Unreliable weather conditions are another reason for blending. The weather in Bordeaux is highly unpredictable and blending serves as a tool where consistency can be achieved, as each separate grape variety matures at different times, enabling one variety to dodge an element of nature that can wipe out the crop of another. For example your cabernet sauvignon may be lost to heavy rain at harvest, but you can wipe the sweat from your brow as your early ripening merlot would have already been harvested and is safely fermenting in the winery (or already made into wine). The winemaker will adjust the proportions of grape varieties in the blend to overcome such adversity. Now to confuse the issue, the act of blending different parcels of the same grape variety (of the same vintage) is often used by the winemaker to ensure product consistency and to increase the range of flavours in the end product. Different yeast strains may be used, which impart a range of flavours as well as the use of oak and un-oaked parcels! Ultimately, blending is an age old tool that creates a wine that promotes each variety’s great attributes – as a whole! Some blends you can pick up locally:
Ginestet Bordeaux Classique 2009, Bordeaux, France A Bordeaux blend produced from 60% merlot, 30% cabernet sauvignon and 10% cabernet franc. Upon approach, this wine expresses lashings of rich, ripe summer fruits, brambles with ripe plums, black cherries with floral notes. On the palate, it is dry, with medium but supple tannins with flavours of damsons, black cherries, black berries and ripe strawberries entwined with vanilla spice. The finish is medium in length, clean, with fresh acidity and balanced through its fruit-forward style. A great match to roast beef, lamb casserole or char-grilled steak. Available from Budgens £7.35
Goats do Roam Red 2009, Western Cape, South Africa A great advocate for blended wine! This wine is comprised of 72% syrah (for structure), 15% cinsault (for softness), 7% grenache (for fruit), 4% mourvèdre (for spice) and 2% carignan (for freshness). Rich ripe forest fruits dominate this blend; blackberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, with some spice; white pepper and vanilla. The palate delivers the same with added complexity of grainy tannins and star anise. The finish lingers and is packed with succulent primary fruits. Pair with chilli con carne, lasagne or beef stroganoff. Available from Den Boer Wines £8.49

Real Cloth Washable Nappies You probably think that real cloth, washable nappies still require folding and scary looking nappy pins just waiting to give your poor baby a nasty poke. Well you’d be wrong. Whilst you can still opt for the folded terry squares and pins, nappies, like all things have, moved with the times and the fashions. There is now a dizzying array of nappies which come in different colours, different styles and different materials each suiting different budgets and lifestyles. Baby Care Online offers a number of carefully chosen styles of nappy and will assist you in choosing the right nappy for your lifestyle and your baby. Styles of nappies you can choose from: Pocket nappies such as Lollipop Popngro Pocket, BumGenius, FuzziBunz; Shaped nappies such as the Bitti Boo, Lollipop Bamboo and Tots Bots; Onesize nappies such as the Motherease and Lollipop Popngro; All in one nappies such as the Bitti Tutto, Close Parent Pop-in and Imse Vimse. More and more parents are choosing re-useable nappies. So why choose real Nappies? Cost savings A full Real Nappy set (18 nappies, 3-4 waterproof covers and accessories such as nippas, liners and bucket) for your baby, from birth to potty, can cost between £300 to £450 including washing costs. Disposable nappies can cost from £700 to £900 per child.
This amounts to a pretty sizeable cost saving especially if the real nappies are used for subsequent children. Environmental Many parents choose re-useable nappies for the environmental benefits. In the UK upwards of 8 million nappies are thrown away per day with each nappy taking up to 500 years to decompose. 4% of the rubbish each local council in the UK removes comes from disposable nappies. Funky Baby Another reason parents choose cloth nappies is that the new designs and colours has meant that baby can now be kitted out in funky colours, and patterns. This makes for the cutest look. Benefits of Re-useable Nappies: Soft comfortable fabrics No more pins Great containment Vibrant colours and patterns Early potty training Cut down on waste Less impact on the environment Save your hard earned money
