How to use Oxford Open Doors Access

A

ll access and activities listed here are completely free of charge. Some venues are offering refreshments, for which there may be a charge. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Disabled access is indicated ‘D’ where applicable. (Please contact Oxford Open Doors or the venue directly if you have a query regarding disabled access.) FA D

Booking Some events must be pre-booked owing to their limited capacity. To book a place please ring the telephone number listed or follow the instructions to book online on our website or as indicated. NB Telephone booking lines will be open: 22 August – 9 September, 9am - 5pm, Monday to Friday (excluding Bank Holiday). Online booking will be available from 22 August - 12 noon on 9 September via our website or as indicated. No bookings can be taken before or after these dates. We can not accept bookings for large organised groups.

Oxford’s Sporting Heritage

I am delighted that Oxford Open Doors are making sport and the build up to the 2012 London Olympics one of their key themes this year. This weekend will be the inaugural event for Oxfordshire’s programme to take advantage of 2012 and I recommend everyone to get involved.

Our special theme in 2011 is a celebration of Oxford’s Sporting History and Excellence as we look forward to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Did you know the Olympics started with the Ancient Greeks? Come to the museum to seek out discus throwers, athletes, javelins and more with our super sporty museum trail today. Small display in the Proscholium on the theme of the Olympics as part of the Bodleian Library’s celebration of Oxford Open Doors. 3 Cherwell Boat House, 50 Bardwell Rd, Friday 9th, 10am-2pm. A celebration of the art of punting at this authentic working Edwardian boat house and long-established fine dining restaurant on the River Cherwell. Test your punting skills with a free half hour trial. Also exhibition on history of punting, fun facts & quiz. Tea hut, bar & café. Corpus Christi Barge, Meadow Lane, Donnington Bridge. Saturday 10th, 11am-6pm. Former college barge used

as changing rooms and ‘grandstands’ for the boat races. Exhibition and information by Oxford College Barges Preservation Trust. 4 Elmer Cotton, 18-19 Turl St. (window display only). Look inside the window to see some of the fascinating sporting ‘treasures’ collected over the years by Oxford’s oldest sports shop. Hinksey Sculling School, Hinksey Lakes, Hinksey Park, OX1 4RP. Saturday 10th, 11am-2pm. Come along to this friendly rowing club at the small lake (and big lake) and have a go at sculling or indoor rowing. Find out about this very traditional city sport. Oxford’s Sporting Heritage reminiscence workshop – slide show and memories and anecdote sharing of a range of much-loved city sports. Sessions will be recorded. Tea & coffee. Bartlemas Chapel, lane alongside 271 Cowley Rd, OX4 2AJ, 10am-6pm. One of Oxford’s hidden gems, this 14th century Chapel was originally part of the earlier St Bartholomew’s leper hospital. The tower is all that remains of the 13th century Church of St Martin the former city church demolished in 1896 to make way for more traffic. No disabled access to tower. The building was completed in 1971 by James Stirling and Partners and is Grade II listed. It is one of the most significant works of one of the country’s leading postwar architects, and is characteristic of his style. Booking essential 01865 251022.
