WHO’S NEXT?
Business Update The Town Council invited members of the local community to work with them again on their Our Faringdon, Our Future Working Party. The group met at the end of July and discussed what the possible effect of having a Tesco store might have on Faringdon over the next few years. Faringdon Chamber of Commerce was represented by Sarah Allen-Stevens and Denise Palmer. The members of Faringdon Chamber of Commerce feel that it is important to protect the current and future retail offer in the town and to designate space in the local plan to replace the lost industrial land. If you would like to become a member of Faringdon Chamber of Commerce and have a say in the business development of Faringdon, please contact Chamber Secretary, Jane Haynes on 01367 246130 or email jane.haynes@bgi.uk.com

Cover Photo Our cover this month was taken by Nick Elwell in the Sri Lankan Jungle. “Initially I thought it was a giant preying Mantis until I got closer and saw these beautiful orchids.”
Waitrose have advised that they have decided not to proceed with their planning application for a new store in Faringdon, at least for the time being. Tesco did well to have their appeal reversed and Waitrose were a little tardy in submitting their detailed application. The concern for Faringdon remains unaltered. That is, an additional Supermarket on the outskirts of the town will not actually be able to offer much of an increased product range so will neither stop those who live in Faringdon driving out to Wantage, Witney & Swindon for their weekly shop nor attract anyone from outside of Faringdon onto the town. A new enterprise has opened for business. Welcome to Faringdon Motorist Centre, located in Marlbrough Street it has everything you “petrolheads” out there could wish for! Despite the expected holiday 'lull' Faringdon Business Breakfast Club (FBBC) managed to attract in excess of 20 local businesses to the Sudbury House Hotel on Monday 1st August for its monthly networking event. After the usual hearty breakfast and an introduction from Club Chairman, Paul Brame, each delegate spoke for 60 seconds about their activities and the kind of referral they are looking for. Departing from his usual poetic efforts, Paul this month amused delegates with a 'legalese' description of networking that only a Solicitor would see!! The next meeting will be on Monday 5th September and the only cost will be £10.00 to cover Breakfast and Refreshments. If you'd like to join us, please call the booking line on 0845 003 1340, email paul.brame@morgancole.com to book your place.

The Faringdon Motorist Centre Opens it’s Doors Karl Booth and his family are proud to announce the opening of the Faringdon Motorist Centre in Marlborough Street. A real family business, Karl and his partner Taryn are involved in the running and shaping of the new business. Karl is keen to focus on family life and work more regular hours since the birth of Ella, their 23-month-old daughter. Karl has moved away from his previous chauffeur business of 12 years to focus on his new venture of supplying quality motoring goods and advice to the people of Faringdon and surrounding areas. Karl said: “I’d like to thank my family and friends for all their help and support in the setting up of the FMC. I’ve always been interested in cars so this move was a natural choice for me. We want to provide residents and local tradesman with competitive prices for car spares and accessories without them having to travel all the way to Swindon.” Karl is always willing to lend a hand to customers to make sure you get the right products for the job, from the correct oil for lawnmowers to spark plugs for your car. Faringdon Motorist Centre also hopes to extend its lines in the future to some hardware, pushbike spares and possibly even Calor gas supplies. Karl is dedicated to community commerce and hopes that his business will contribute to ensure Faringdon remains a thriving town. Money Matters Help with debt from Financial Healer Erik Cornish
In a cash strapped society many of us have found ourselves in financial trouble. Building debt through loans, store cards and other lending can escalate to having more going out than you have coming in. But how can you fix this? Don’t despair and bury your problems but instead get help to tackle them head on. Financial Healer, Erik Cornish, can help get your life back on track and relieve the stresses and strains that debt can bring. Erik, from Bristol, qualified as a Chartered Accountant in London on 1973. He worked for EMI and then ran his own finance business before retiring in 2006. He now devotes his time to helping people learn how to conquer debt and cope through financial crisis. Erik is also member of The Healing Trust, the largest and oldest organisation of spiritual healers in the UK. Erik starts the healing process by arranging appropriate financial solutions with professional advisers in Debt Management; IVA or Bankruptcy. The phone calls and letters from creditors will then stop. Then, with Erik’s help, you can start to focus on why the problems occurred to begin with, to prevent them happening again. Erik uses Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Matrix Reimprinting to help with stress management and begin the inner journey to the sub-conscious to find the root of your fears. EFT helps by improving the energy flow of the body and removing blockages that may have formed, restricting the body’s natural rhythm. Matrix Reimprinting replaces old, ego-based, anger and fear with positive energies to create a new positive mindset. It is estimated that about 90% of our thoughts are in the sub-conscious. Once the inner journey begins, the replacing of negative thoughts with positive thoughts leads to positive outcomes. This often creates a “lightbulb moment” which marks the change from the old life to new beginnings. Erik will then help you on the road to financial peace. Erik will always offer ongoing support and help with new ideas. He turns the financial crisis into a new life. Call to action: Call Erik now for a FREE telephone consultation on 07932 654519 or E Mail on erik@financialhealer.org.uk . For more information visit www.financialhealer.org.uk

Uplifting Our Spirits A retreat for people living with Cancer 14th - 16th October 2011 Global Retreat Centre, Nuneham Courtney The diagnosis and then treatment of cancer is one of the great challenges which can face us as human beings. It has a huge impact on everyone involved because it brings us face to face with our mortality, often at a time when we least expect it. At the same time, it provides us with an opportunity to learn and grow. Dealing with cancer can be part of a powerful spiritual journey in which we re-evaluate our priorities, improve the quality and depth of our relationships and find the peace and love, which often lie at the heart of the healing process. This uplifting retreat will take place in the beautiful and peaceful setting of the Global Retreat Centre (www.globalretreatcentre.org). Through a mixture of talks, workshops, music, meditation and more, you will have the opportunity to:
Ÿ Relax and share insights and inspirations with like-minded people Ÿ Explore the benefits of meditation Ÿ Renew your inner strength and power Ÿ Learn spiritual tools to make your life easier. The retreat is offered, free of charge, as a service to the community by the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University (UK) a registered charity, which teaches Raja Yoga as a way of experiencing peace of mind and a positive approach to life. Wine Review Looking through rosé coloured glasses…. Over the past few years, you may have noticed an increasing number of pink wine on the shelves of wine retailers, even to the extent of entire walls and fridges dedicated to the shrine of rosé. Visually pleasing, these wines cover the entire spectrum of what one would call pink – from pale salmon through to a deep cerise. Rosé wines, aka ‘blush’ or ‘rosado’ (Spanish), are mainly produced from one of two methods. The berries of black grape varieties (e.g. shiraz) are often used and once crushed, spend a short time with the juice in contact with the skins, a process known as maceration. The length of maceration is dependent on the required depth of colour and tannin required for the resultant wine. Following maceration, the process of wine production generally followed is that of white wine production. An alternative method is the addition of red wine to white. Although often used in the production of entry level wines, this method is approved in the highly acclaimed Champagne region. What has lead to the uprise of the rosé revolution? Some say that seasonality has a hand to play or argue that rosé is here to stay. Long gone are the days of Mateus rosé (which, in its defence, in a blind tasting rates very well!) and stepping up to the plate are boutique rosés and specialist rosé. So what may have begun as a response to consumer demand has become serious business. You be the judge! Taste some rosés available locally…
Splash Out Charles Melton ‘Rose of Virginia’n 2011 Barossa Valley, South Australia A serious rosé from one of the Barossa’s top men. This rosé facilitates the use of four black grape varieties; grenache (55%), pinot meunier (21%), cabernet sauvignon (14%) and shiraz (10%). All varieties are fermented together to obtain the bright cerise colour and appropriate tannin level. Slow, cool fermentation captures the primary fruit flavours such as raspberries, with some sweet marzipan. The fruit was harvested early in order to obtain crisp acidity which is evident on the palate via freshness on the finish. A rosé showing complexity. Available from Den Boer Wines for £17.99
Drinking out (or in) Sollazo Pinot Grigio Blush 2010, Umbria Italy This wine is from the producer Podere Le Vaglie, situated in the heart of Umbria. Flavours of fresh strawberries entwined with crisp, refreshing acidity give way to a clean, dry finish. Available from Portwell Angel for £14.80 Grab a Bargain: Arniston Bay Pinotage Rose 2010 Western Cape South Africa. Availabe in Budgens - £4.50 in September Reviews by Donna Rogers Den Boer Wines www.denboerwines.com

Restaurant Review The Snooty Mehmaan Bar - Lounge - Restaurant www.thesnootymehman.co.uk Tel: 01367 242260 As the saying goes, “good things come to those that wait” and this certainly proved to be the case when dining at the Snooty Mehmaan. We had been meaning to visit the restaurant for some time, especially as the local feedback has been so positive. On entering, we were made to feel very welcome and given ample time to choose our tipple, opting for Montes cabernet sauvignon. The refurbishment has created a lovely feel to the place in an extremely large dining area, yet with cosy corners, ideal for group parties and events. Check out the music events for 2011, including “The Elvis Experience” running until December. We both love Indian and Thai cuisine, being familiar with most dishes, but I have to say the menu is extremely varied, offering many (new to us) modern flavours. After a few slurps of wine, we went for the Thai menu. Starters – Poo Tod (deep fried crab with Thai spices) Goong Been (deep fried tiger prawns in sesame seed bread crumbs, served with sweet chilli sauce) Main Course – Pla Lad Prik (crispy fillet of sea bass topped with sweet chilli sauce) Pad Med Mamuang Himapan (stir-fried chicken with cashew nuts, spring onion, peppers and dried chilli) In a word, Scrummy! The presentation of each plate is a work of art, accompanied by an intricate sculptured vegetable garnish by a lovely lady called Meemee - it’s so good you want to take it home. I love the guide on each page of the menu informing you of how hot each dish tastes, 1 x symbol of a chilli means med hot, 2 x chillies hot and 3 x chillies extra hot. Worth a mention is how good the service is, attentive without being overpowering in any way. So’ if you are looking for superb cuisine, value for money in excellent surroundings, you’d be hard pressed to find better than this.

The song thrush in your garden in the summer may not be the same song thrush that you see in winter. Although they are resident in most of western and southern Europe, many song thrushes head for warmer climes in the winter. Much like any holidaymaker, many British thrushes head for the ‘Med’ or Spain in winter (and who can blame them?). The thrushes we see in wintertime are likely to be from places such as Scandinavia, arriving in Britain to escape even colder weather. We have a dominant male thrush in our garden (Derek) who regularly competes with the locals for singer of the day. Occasionally he will roost in a tree in the front garden, singing all night because of the street lights. Our garden falls on the boundaries of two thrush territories and Derek will often resort to fisticuffs on the lawn – and I don’t mean sing-offs, I mean real fighting. The females look on disinterestedly, grabbing worms as they go – there’s no “Don’t do it Derek he’s not worth it” from them. Song thrushes used to be one of our most common garden visitors – however, recent surveys suggest a massive decline, due mainly to the degradation of farmland and loss of hedgerows. For the song thrush this has meant that suitable feeding habitat is less easy to find throughout the year. They are a shy, timid bird constantly missing out to the more adventurous starling or blackbird in the birdworld pecking order. You may not be aware that a thrush resides in your garden, keep a look out for broken snail shells. The song thrush will collect snails and take them to its favourite stone, using it as an anvil to break them open (The only birds that do this). The song thrush is going through hard times at the moment and needs all the help they can get. Despite being natural ground feeders foraging for earthworms, slugs and snails, try putting some grated cheese and sultanas on your bird table - they love them….

Twelve Oaks Golf Club Around the time that the inaugural Open Championship was being played (1860) an unknown farmer planted a line of acorns on the roadside near Crouch Hill. He worked land which borders the ancient market town of Highworth, from where he was able to admire the 13th century skyline, dominated by the tower of the medieval church. Today, on land which nestles between that skyline and the resultant magnificent oaks, you will find Twelve Oaks Golf Club. As the oaks have developed, golf as a game-for-all has developed. Early heroes, Tom Morris and Willie Park, have been followed by today’s young guns Rory McIIroy and Tom Lewis. Golf at nine-hole courses has become the gateway to enjoying the satisfaction and frustrations for many golfers whose aspirations are to keep the ball on the fairway and relax in open countryside. Golf at Twelve Oaks GC, which is open to all, is Pay & Play with modestly priced membership packages for those who are able to play regularly. The course, which is complemented by a restaurant that has a Five* rating and a twenty bay covered driving range, is laid out across gentle terrain. Nature has been allowed to bring its elements to this golfing haven, where hawks and hares blend comfortably with the wildlife supported by the lake and hedgerows. At 3033 yards (Par 35), Twelve Oaks GC provides a golfing challenge for a wide range of abilities in an environment that fully justifies the description, ‘Gateway to the Cotswolds’. Located on the A361 between Highworth and Inglesham the course, driving range and impressively appointed clubhouse are open daily from 7am. For more information visit the website www.twelveoaksgolfclub.com or call (01793) 763749. Satnav users will find the course at Lechlade Road, SN6 7QR.

Tad qualified earlier in the year at Premier Training in Oxford, and is now an Advanced Personal Trainer, with qualifications in Nutrition, passing the very demanding NASM exam. In addition to his personal training clients, he has started providing training for the elderly and disabled who live in several residential communities in Bampton; he is doing this free of charge. "I am taking a course in Lower Back Pain training at the David Lloyd Gym in London. This is ideally suited to older clients, or those with physical disabilities.
