Ein Herz aus Strolz A heart of Strolz

Deutsch Als sie nach Lech kam, war die Straße noch eine Schotterstraße. Sie war blutjung und stammte aus einer kinderreichen Familie in Obermieming in Tirol. Mit 18 Jahren wurde sie direkt im Gasthof Schwarz von Fr. Moosbrugger ins Hotel Post in Lech engagiert. „Weil ich arbeiten konnte und keine Faxen gemacht hab”, sagt sie und lacht. In Lech lernte sie auch ihren Mann kennen, der aus einer Schuhmacherfamilie kam. Beim Flexenpass machte er ihr einen Heiratsantrag. Erfreut sagte sie Ja, und so heirateten die Herta und der Ulrich Strolz. Die jungen Eheleute lebten jahrelang auf kleinstem Raum, waren fleißig, oft bis tief in die Nacht. Niemand ahnte, dass die beiden einmal das nobelste Bekleidungshaus weit über die Landesgrenzen hinaus führen würden. Ein Haus, in dem gekrönte Häupter ein und aus gehen. Noch immer geht sie jeden Tag ins „Geschäft”. Sie wird sofort erkannt mit ihrer Pagenfrisur und den knallrot gezogenen Lippen. Sie ist von einer wunderbaren Unkompliziertheit. Sie ist eine Legende, die Herta, und in ihr schlägt ein Herz aus Strolz, durch und durch. When she came to Lech, the road was still a gravel road. Back then, nobody expected that these two would one day run the classiest apparel store renowned far beyond national boundaries. A house frequented by crowned heads. She still goes into “the shop” every day. She is immediately recognisable with her page boy haircut, and her bright red lipstick. She is wonderfully uncomplicated. She is a legend, Herta, and she truly has a heart of Strolz, through and through. 24

Deutsch Ich bin mein Tabernakel. Meine Seele wird unberührt bleiben in all den Verletzungen dieser und vergangener Welten. Ich feiere mich, wie ich gewollt bin. Deutsch Dieser Mann beherrscht noch die uralte Technik des kunstvollen Zaunbaus. Sigi Jochum ist stolz darauf, ein Walser aus Lech zu sein. Er ist Nachfahre der Walser, die einst die unwegsamsten und rauesten Hochtäler Vorarlbergs besiedelten, um dort als freie Bauern zu leben, ohne den Kriegsdienst versehen zu müssen. Jochum ist gelernter Schuhmacher und hat, wie er ausdrücklich betont, beim „besten Schuhmacher“ gelernt, nämlich bei Martin Strolz. Er hat seinen Lehrherrn so verehrt, dass er selbst noch an Heiligabend im Sporthaus Strolz mitgeholfen hat, 200 verspätete Paar Schuhe zu schnüren und einzupacken, die in letzter Minute nach Japan versandt werden mussten. „Ich hab das dem Martin zuliebe getan.“ Sigi Jochum ist ein exzellenter Kenner der Dorfgeschichte und bekannt für die „Dorfrundgänge“, wo er seinen Gästen zahllose Fakten und Anekdoten aus dem Lech von damals mit Humor zu berichten weiß. This man still masters the age-old art of building fences. English Sigi Jochum is proud to be a Walser man from Lech. He is a descendant of the Walser people who once settled in the almost impassable, roughest high valley of Vorarlberg in order to live there as free peasants without having to do war service. Jochum was trained as a cobbler, and he was apprenticed to the “best cobbler”, as he stresses, to Martin Strolz. He admired his master so much, that one Christmas Eve he helped in Sporthaus Strolz, tying up and packaging 200 late pairs of shoes, a last-minute consignment for Japan. “I did it as a favour for Martin.” Sigi Jochum is an excellent expert of village history and well-known for his “village walkabouts” when in his humorous way, he tells his guests numerous facts and anecdotes about Lech in times past.

Deutsch Sie schätzen, ja sie verehren ihn – Jodok Müller, den Pfarrer von Lech. Er hat so ganz und gar nichts Priesterliches an sich. Nichts Belehrendes und nichts Dogmatisches. Vielmehr ist er ein sensibler Zuhörer. Im Erzählen wird die Seele leichter – das ist sein Credo. Er kommt aus Riezlern im Kleinwalsertal. Seine Eltern waren Bauern und unterhielten eine kleine Frühstückspension. Jodok Müller wollte ursprünglich Mediziner werden. Die Berufung zum Priesteramt kam für ihn selbst sehr überraschend. „Ich habe Ja gesagt zu etwas, von dem ich nicht wusste, wie es sein wird”, sagt er nachdenklich. Und er fügt hinzu, dass wir mehr dem Ja vertrauen sollten als dem Nein. Seine Predigten sind weit über Lech hinaus Gespräch. Bei aller Bildung ist er der staunende Bauernbub geblieben, der der Großmutter, die Trachtenstickerin war, fasziniert zugesehen hat, wie sie die bunten Fäden kunstvoll ineinanderwob. Ein Gespür für Schnee A Feeling for Snow

Deutsch „Ich war zum richtigen Zeitpunkt am richtigen Ort“, sagt Erich Mair, die Skilehrer-Ikone von Zürs. Von Beruf Maschinenschlosser, wurde ihm das Lechtal, aus dem er stammt, bald zu eng. Er ging nach Kanada, um dort sein Geld zu verdienen. „Aber das hat mich nicht erfüllt”, kommentiert er knapp. Ihn zog es in die Natur hinaus, auf die Piste. Er war Skifahrer mit Leib und Seele. Wieder zuhause, arbeitete er als Tankwart an der kleinen Tankstelle in Zürs, wo in ihm der brennende Wunsch entstand, Skilehrer zu werden. Er machte die Ausbildung zum Diplomskilehrer und -führer. In den Sommermonaten war er Skilehrer in Argentinien und Australien, wo er seine Fremdsprachenkenntnisse vervollkommnete. Eines Tages teilte ihm die Skischule einen Gast zu, den er betreuen sollte. Es war Caroline, die Prinzessin von Monaco. Mit ihr verbindet ihn bis heute eine tiefe Lebensfreundschaft. So wurde er der Skilehrer vieler Prominenter. Von Gunther Sachs bis Renée Zellweger. Von Mika Häkkinen bis Veronica Ferres. „Es fiel mir einfach zu”, sagt er und lächelt schelmisch. “I was in the right place at the right time,” says Zürs ski English instructor icon, Erich Mair. He was trained as a machine fitter, and the Lech valley where he comes from soon became too small for him. He went to Canada to earn a living there. “But I did not find that fulfilling,” he comments in succinct words. He wanted to be out in the great outdoors, on the ski run. He was a skier, with heart and soul. Home again, he worked as an attendant at the small Zürs gas station, and here he developed the burning desire to become a ski instructor. He completed his training as certified ski instructor and guide. He spent the summer months as ski instructor in Argentina and Australia where he also perfected his language skills. One day, the ski school allocated a guest to him to look after. This was Princess Caroline of Monaco. Until today, they have enjoyed a close life friendship. He continued to become the ski instructor of many VIPs. From Gunther Sachs to Renée Zellweger. From Mika Häkkinen to Veronica Ferres. “It just came naturally to me,” he explains, with a mischievous smile. 114

Die stille Weltmeisterin The Quiet World Champion

Deutsch Sie hat 2017 den Weltmeistertitel in einer Disziplin errungen, die noch sehr jung ist – das Freeriden. „Als ich anfing, gab es noch keine Trainer und keine Trainingskonzepte“, sagt Lorraine Huber. „Ich war ganz auf mich selbst gestellt, und die Eigenverantwortung war dementsprechend hoch.“ Lorraine ist eine sehr bescheidene und nachdenkliche junge Frau. Nichts Allürenhaftes ist an ihr. Mit 8 Jahren ist sie zu ihrer Mutter nach Australien gezogen. Ihrem Heimatort Lech hat sie jedoch nie den Rücken gekehrt, hat immer wieder da gewohnt und wird nun endgültig in Lech sesshaft werden. „Beim Freeriden geht es mir um den Flow, weniger um das Erreichen bestimmter Resultate“, erzählt sie. „Es gibt verschiedene Intensitätsstufen von Flow.“ Lorraine Huber hat Betriebswirtschaftslehre in Wien und Innsbruck studiert und ist dabei, den Master im Mental Coaching zu erwerben, den sie 2019 abschließen will. Sie bietet jährliche Freeride-Camps für Frauen in Lech am Arlberg an. „Ich möchte neben dem Unterrichten von Skitechnik und Risikomanagement auch Frauen zusammenbringen und meine Begeisterung für das Freeriden weitergeben.” Sponsoren: Kästle, Bergans, Scott, Lech Zürs Tourismus. www.lorrainehuber.com In 2017, she became world champion in a discipline which is English still very new – freeriding. “When I started, there were no coaches and no training courses,” says Lorraine Huber. “I was left to my own devices, and accordingly this meant a lot of self-responsibility.” Lorraine is a very modest and thoughtful young woman. There are no airs and graces about her. When she was 8, she moved to live with her mother in Australia. But she never turned her back on her hometown of Lech, she kept coming back to live here, and will now permanently settle here. “Freeriding for me is all about the flow, less about achieving specific results,” she explains. “There are different intensities of flow.” Lorraine Huber graduated in Business Studies in Vienna and Innsbruck, and is currently doing a masters course in Mental Coaching which she wants to complete in 2019.
