WEEK 3 READING: LEGER, LE CORBUSIER, AND PURISM

Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? (Maximum 100 words) According to Le Corbusier, Pictorial Space is a space that “which cannot be entered or circulated through” and “irremediably space viewed from a distance, and is therefore eternally resigned to frontality.” Therefore, Pictorial Space is a concept of space that is aimed to project frontality and can only be viewed.

Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against?(Maximum 100 words) The first property is frontality. This is pitted against rotation. The idea of frontality is that in order to understand the concept of space and projection, where one must look at things from a distance and at the front (ideation). On the other hand, it is pitted against the idea of rotation, which one can learn about the space by moving through it and closely examining it (experience). The second property is color. This idea is pitted against the use of black color. Le Corbusier believes that the color black gives a sense of depth through shadow, thus implies that there is a three-dimensional characteristics to the paintings or objects. He refused to use the color black in his paintings in order to reserve the perception of flatness.

WEEK 4 READING: AXONOMETRIC PROJECTION: NEW GEOMETRIES AND OLD ORIGINS Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection? (Maximum 100 words) The differences between Pictoral Space and Projection are the presence of the vanishing point in perspective view and the absence in one in projection. In axonometric projection, no two lines will meet at a point of infinity since alllines are parallel to one another. On the other hand, distorted visions and illusions can be found in perspective space, but all objects in this space still maintain their positions in relation to each other. Projections are also more precise and measurable visually.

Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? (Maximum 100 words) Axonometric projection first appeared in the military context. Axonometric drawings were drawn in order to visually and accurately find out the trajectories of artillery projectiles. In the eighteenth and nineteenth century, engineering schools began using this technique to visually present machine parts. This led to further development of the axonometric projection in industrialization as well. Overall, axonometric projection is used to visually represent products in an accurate way so that they can be measured for real-life application uses.

APPENDIX

Image 1: My first handsketch tracing of the Mario World. This was my 5th attempt at trying to trace the images out.

Image 2: A progress in the tracing. I managed to finish most of the lower elevation but the top elevation was still unfinished for the most part.

9

Image 3: I managed to finish drawing the Mario World, for both elevations. However, it is evident that there are pencil smears all over the background of the drawing. I was not satsified with the dirty background, so I proceed to retrace the drawing on a separate tracing paper.

10

Image 4: i retraced the drawing using a fineliner 0.2 so that I could have a clean background. This would make the scanned picture look a lot better and less effort needed to clean up the background later in Photoshop.

My inspiration for the Mario World centers around Princess Peach’s castle from the Nintendo game, Mario Kart 64, on the N64 gaming console. That was where the top 3 racers from the racecourse would end up getting crowned. Additionally, Princess Peach and Toad are two of my favourite Mario characters of all time. Hence, the only characters found in my world are Princess Peach and Toad.

11

Originally, these were my digital drawings of Princess Peach and Toad in axonometric projection view. However, I ended up getting rid of these sketches because they seemed too at and didn’t satisfy me.

12

I ended up using the images on the left as references and traced out Toad and Princess Peach out using pen tool (.25 line weight) and added gradients to the drawings to make them look more realistic.
