Environment and Development
Regular Report I know how important the environment and international development is to all of my constituents. That’s why I’ve put together this new report, to be sent out regularly with information on how I am working to represent you in these two crucial areas. In these tough economic times, it’s important that we don’t forget the environment and those who live in developing countries. Please have a read through and let me know what you think. All the very best,

Inside this edition... Read more about my campaign to create a new green space for Gillingham
Action on the environment in 2009 As a transport Minister, I am lucky to be able to take national action on behalf of my constituents in Gillingham and Rainham. Some of this work includes:
When it comes to helping developing countries, Britain is a world leader. Here’s a few of the things that the Government has been doing recently to help developing countries:
Working with local councils across Britain to encourage cycling in cities and improve cycle routes
• Investing £100m in Africa’s North-South corridor, to improve trading links between developing countries
Campaigning locally to improve recycling services for residents Working with energy company EDF to promote a green energy scheme to local businesses Campaigning with M&S to encourage people to recycle unwanted Christmas cards Supporting Government measures to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050, the toughest targets anywhere in the world
• Providing £172m in aid to help rebuild Nepal and stimulate economic growth • Contributing £300m to a programme designed to boost businesses in developing countries • Pledging £510m to fight poverty in Afghanistan, and £1.5m to provide water and shelter in Gaza • Doubling the humanitarian aid on offer to Sri Lanka
Campaigning for a better local environment I have run a fierce campaign in the north of Gillingham to secure £3,000,000 funding to regenerate the Queen Elizabeth Field site. With the fantastic support of local residents and community groups, we are well on our way to making sure that this green area of land is not only preserved for future generations, but made into a pleasant and welcoming space for everyone to enjoy.
Working for you... I always want to hear from constituents if they have any suggestions or comments about the work I have been doing. Over the page you can find out how to contact me and give me feedback on some of the stories covered in this newsletter.
