Let me introduce myself. My name is Peggy D’Alessandro and I am your PTA’s new President. I am looking forward to an exciting year full of educational programs for our children and many fun family events. The PTA has been busy this summer drafting the 2008-09 budget and preparing for the school year ahead. We will again be hosting our popular Bingo nights and Fall Festival amongst many other activities, which you
will find on our calendar inside this newsletter.
I am happy to report that Sand Pine begins this school year with 22 new Netbook Computers which were purchased by PTA this summer. Initiatives like this are made possible by your continued and generous support! The PTA offers many ways in which you can become involved. Why join the PTA?
Numerous studies have proven that children have more success in school when their parents are involved in their education. Becoming a member of a the PTA is one of the best ways for parents to get involved. Working in the PTA, parents meet the principals, the teachers, and the parents of their children’s friends. By getting the input of others, parents gain greater insight into the school’s strengths and weaknesses.

The major advantage of being a PTA member is that you will have a chance to evaluate how to improve your child’s school and to participate in providing the school with much needed resources. You can be certain that your involvement will help your child to achieve greater success in school. As a PTA member, you will have access to a wealth of online parenting resources. A PTA member has options regarding for the level of involvement. Parents can attend meetings, spearhead fundraisers, serve as spokespersons, or become an officer of the PTA board. Thus, even parents with busy schedules can easily find a way to participate.

Where do PTA dues go?
Your PTA dues do not go to waste! Last year, we raised enough money to purchase LCD projectors for every pod in our school, and 22 netbooks for our classrooms! Other goals we are working on this year are:

There are school and district forms that you will be filling out, so come prepared with your child’s social security number, doctors’ information, and emergency contact information.
School supply packs will be available for purchase in limited quantities ($18 for K-1; $15 for 2-3; and $25 for 4-5). The supply list can be found online at www.sandpinepta.org and inside this newsletter.
Know how your child will be going home. This year each child will receive a wrist/identification band indicating how he/she gets home. This wrist/ identification band should be placed on your child’s backpack. If your child does not have a backpack at this time, the band will be placed on his/her wrist. This wrist/ identification band will designate the proper dismissal method (e.g., Bus, Day Care, Car rider, Walker, Bike rider, PLACE, Parent Walk-up/Pick-up). We are asking that you leave this band on your child’s backpack for as long as possible to assist with effective and efficient dismissals.

Students & Parents — Stay Involved! Opportunities for Students
Opportunities for Parents
Dyan Chitty is in charge of our safety patrols who are 5th graders recommended by their teachers. This important position helps with the morning and afternoon car riders, patrol the bike racks, and are posted throughout the school to keep students from running and pushing. A student must maintain a B or above grade level and an S in all other areas to be in this program. Some members were chosen the end of last year, and the remaining students will be chosen soon after school begins.
By joining the PTA, you are not obligating yourself to anything. With your $5 (single), $8 (family) annual membership, you are simply helping the PTA support our children and school. Although there are no mandatory meetings, we invite members to join us at our general assembly meetings. Don’t be afraid! There are no required volunteer hours, and no obligations, you can be as active as your schedule allows. If you’d like to be more active, consider becoming a PTA Board Member.
Safety Patrol
Student Council Be a student council representative and make a difference in at Sand Pine! Elections will be held in September for two representatives from each class. Those interested, start thinking of your campaign now! Student council will hold monthly meetings, and decide on a worthy cause to work towards this year. School Socials will also be planned by the council. News Crew Fourth and 5th grade students interested in the News Crew should fill out an application at the beginning of the year. The application requires two teacher recommendations and a parent’s signature. We select two anchors, one meteorologist, one sports announcer, one special effects person, and two camera operators. Those selected will be rotated each quarter and will serve with others from their team/pod. For more information, see Mrs. Pope. Winter Concert This year’s winter concert will be performed by the primary students. Primary students will learn their winter program during music class, and will all be invited to perform, and there is no need for audition for the winter program. The performance will take place in December. For more information, see Mrs. Styles Spring School Play Every year, Sand Pine students put on a school play. Last year it was Willy Wonka, and previously, the Wizard of Oz. Auditions are normally held in January which allows several months for students to prepare for the May performance. More information will be coming as 2010 approaches.

PTA Board Member If you have some time and would like to take a more active role in what goes on with the Sand Pine PTA, please consider taking on a position on the PTA Board. The Board is made up of approximately 25 parents who meet once a month to brainstorm and plan activities to benefit our students and school. There are important positions still available and we need you! Contact Peggy D’Alessandro at president@sandpinepta.org for more information. Volunteers Please be sure to register online to be cleared to be a volunteer at the school. There is a link on our PTA homepage at www.sandpinepta.org. Also, there will be a New Volunteer Orientation sometime in September. Keep an eye out for more information. The School Advisory Council (SAC) SAC is a team of people representing various segments of the community—parents, teachers, students, administrators, business people and other community members who meet once a month. The purpose of a SAC is to assist in the preparation and evaluation of the school improvement plan and to assist the principal with the annual school budget. Parents elect SAC members at the beginning of the school year. If you, or someone you know are interested in becoming a part of the SAC, look for the nomination form in the student’s Back to School Folder. 5th grade parents Committee It’s their last year of elementary school, let’s be sure it’s special! The intermediate teams are looking for parents interested in assisting in organizing the special events for our 5th graders (picnic, fundraisers, etc.). If interested, please contact your 5th grader’s teacher. Tutoring and classroom help Volunteers for classroom help are often needed. Check with your child’s teacher to see how you can assist. For those with an extra half hour a week available, Mrs. Westbrook is often looking for parents or grandparents to help with reading and/or math with students in the classroom during the day. Often all it takes to encourage a young reader is to have someone read with them. If you have any questions, contact Mari Blank or Mrs. Westbrook.

Let’s keep Sand Pine students healthy! Did you know that there is an easy way to reduce your chances of getting a cold, the flu, diarrhea, infections, some life threating diseases, and even some other not-so-nice things? By following 3 simple steps, you can help stop the germs that can make you and others sick.
Three Simple Steps to Stay Healthy 1. Wash Your Hands. Proper handwashing is the single most important thing you can do to avoid getting sick or passing on your germs. While we may think we know the facts about handwashing, most of us do not know when or even how to wash our hands correctly. Lets review... When to Wash Your Hands...
How to Wash Your Hands...
Before and after you eat.
WET your hands under warm running water, apply soap.
Before, during, and after preparing food. After touching a pet or cleaning up after them. After using the restroom. After caring for someone who is sick. After changing a diaper. After handling trash and any other potentially germy object or surface. After you cough or sneeze.
RUB your hands with soap under warm running water. SCRUB your hands for a count of twenty seconds (the time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday”). Pay special attention to your fingernails. DRY your hands with a paper towel. Turn off the faucet and open the door using a paper towel instead of your clean hands.
If you don’t have access to soap and water, a 60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer can be an effective way to help reduce the spread of germs. 12 | August 2009 PTA Pipeline
2. Cover Your Cough or Sneeze.
3. Stay Home When You’re Sick.
Coughing and sneezing, unfortunately, are excellent ways to spread germs. In fact, studies show that the speed of a sneeze is over100 miles per hour and can project out 5000 droplets, containing around 10,000 bacteria, that can be propelled up to a distance of 12 feet. So, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you sneeze or cough. If you don’t have a tissue, cough and sneeze into your elbow to help prevent germs from being projected into the air and to keep them off your hands. Remember to wash your hands often!
Home is the best place to be when you’re sick. Employee productivity studies show that three out of four people go to work when they’re contagious. It’s important for all of us to remember how easy it is to spread germs from person to person. Let’s be considerate of others by staying home when we’re sick, getting lots of rest, and not sharing our germs!
