Lake Charles Chosen to Host the 2020 Olympic Trials in Boxing and National Championships
USA Boxing, the national governing body for Olympic-style amateur boxing, chose Lake Charles to host the 2020 Olympic Trials in Boxing and National Championships, December 7-15, 2019, at the Lake Charles Civic Center, 900 Lakeshore Drive. The event will feature both male and female elite and youth boxers from across the United States. Last year, Eric Zartler, sales director at the Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana Convention & Visitors Bureau (LC/SWLA CVB) made a presentation to the USA Boxing Board of Directors in Salt Lake City on behalf of the LC/SWLA CVB, Lake Charles Civic Center and local event partners. There were multiple destinations bidding to host this prestigious tournament. “USA Boxing is tremendously excited to join with Lake Charles to bring the Olympic Trials to the Gulf Coast. The city’s warm hospitality and Southern charm, great people, climate and culture make for a perfect fit to crown our next generation of champions and give our coaches, boxers and officials a special experience,” said Michael Campbell, manager of operations and events. “We are truly excited about this historic opportunity, the largest single sporting event in Lake Charles’ history. The LC/SWLA CVB is to be commended for their tireless efforts to put our area on the map as the destination for events of this stature. This is further evidence of great things happening in Lake Charles. This will be greatly beneficial for local businesses as well. We look forward to rolling out the red carpet and showcasing our great city to competitors and others with USA Boxing,” said Mayor Nic Hunter of the City of Lake Charles.
“We are proud to be chosen as the host for the 2020 Olympic Trials in Boxing and National Championships this coming December. This event is the largest-ever sports group to visit Lake Charles, bringing over 6,500 total room nights in the span of two weeks during a slower travel period. 2019 will also be the 25th anniversary celebration of the 1984 USA Boxing Olympic Team, who made history on the Olympic stage, winning a total of 11 medals. We are looking forward to working with the entire hospitality community in the Lake Area to treat USA Boxing to Southern Hospitality – Southwest Louisiana style,” said Zartler. The event is projected to attract more than 800 boxers and generate more than 6,500 total overnight stays, with the estimated economic impact anticipated to be over 2 million dollars. The tournament begins with weigh-ins and technical meetings. Boxing matches will be held December 10-15, with the majority of the events taking place inside the Sudduth Coliseum and the Olympic Trial championship matches being held at the Rosa Hart Theatre to determine which boxers will represent the USA in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The anniversary of the1984 USA Boxing Olympic Team will bring star power to the Lake Area with possible visits by Tyrell Biggs, Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whittaker and Evander Holyfield, just to name a few. Updated information will be available throughout the year. For the latest, visit www.visitlakecharles.org/ USABoxing or learn more at www.teamusa.org/USA-Boxing.

A Word From Your Publisher— Winter is dwindling away and I’m counting the days until spring. Until then, it looks like we are going to have a nice warm Mardi Gras season this year! I’ll be attending my first ball this weekend, and since I’m well ahead on my Mardi Gras magazine layout, it looks like some parades with my children and family are also in my future. I just love how their little faces light up when they are going after the prize. Whether it’s beads or candy, they are equally excited each time they stuff another catch into their bags. After Mardi Gras, I’ll begin my fast for the Lenten season and hold my breath waiting for Easter, so I can get a taste of whatever I cook. Now that I’m blogging recipes, this may be a good time for me to work on some vegetarian ideas as I give up meat for the entire season. Thank goodness crawfish isn’t meat, as it’s one of my go-to foods on Fridays and I’d miss the 40 days and nights of the crawfish season…and being from Louisiana, that is a hard thing to do. I love my mudbugs!

Join a Boy and His Dog on Three Exciting Adventures Across Time! What would you do if you found a mysterious box in the woods behind your house? Would you get inside if it asked you to? Would you be brave enough to close the lid? The Amazing Wondertime Adventurebox, is an adventure series starring Journey and his faithful dog, Stamps. Together, they discover a strange box in the woods. Join them as this box takes them on three very exciting adventures across time.
Litter, Litter Everywhere I was born, bred and have lived the majority of my life in Louisiana. Both my parents were graduates of Lake Charles High School, and I know of no other location where I would desire to move. That does not mean that I have not enjoyed travelling to other areas. I have visited virtually all of the 50 states, as well as Canada, Mexico and Barbados.
In the first adventure, our adventurers travel to an archaeological site in Peru where Journey discovers the solution to a deadly trap.
One unfortunate thing that stands out in my travels is that we here in Louisiana seem to have a “Mardi Gras” mentality where we feel the need to throw things along the roadways. We have such lovely scenery and environs all around, yet we visually pollute the view with beer cans and other cast-off vestiges of our lives. So much so, that the drainage ditches are often restricted with junk thrown from vehicles that often impedes the water flow, causing unnecessary additional flooding problems.
Along with these adventures, you’ll discover where the box came from, who built it, and why it was abandoned in the woods.
We took an extended family vacation to Ogunquit, Maine several years back and were totally amazed at the lack of litter to the point where we actually went out for a ride one afternoon for the sole purpose of locating some roadside litter. After much driving, we finally found a paper plate that did wind up in a ditch. Our hunt complete, we could not help but wish that it was that hard to find debris along our roads in Louisiana. Unfortunately, a road trip to locate litter here would almost not even require starting the car. Surely, we can do better. If you feel the need to throw, join a Mardi Gras Krewe, ride on their float and have a ball (pun intended).
In the second adventure, we find Journey and Stamps in the middle of the American Revolutionary War where Journey is asked to complete a top-secret mission. Finally, travel with our thrill seekers to a tropical island, where Journey faces off against a strange monster.
This book was written by, Andy Buford, a local author from Ragley, Louisiana. You can find it on Amazon and for Kindle as well. The Amazing Wondertime Adventurebox is rated 5 stars and has great customer reviews. There is something to be said about kindness and curtesy that Journey and Stamps show during their wonderful adventures through time.
Social Media a Curse and a Blessing As engulfed as we are in the digital age, we are becoming more dependent upon electronic devices for communication. Although very much a blessing, these devices do have some negative effects upon society. Among them is a lessening of oral communication due to the fact that so many of us text much more than “calling” to talk. Limiting the face-to-face, mouth-to-ear conversing skills that allow us to read indicators of mood and the visual hints of meaning can result in gross misinterpretation. The lack of face-to-face interaction limits our ability to analyze those visuals, which often lead to false assumptions. The shorthand used in texting has a deteriorating effect on spelling skills, not to mention the demise of cursive writing, which is being dropped from some school curricula. The double-edge sword of digital interchange of information enhances as well as detracts, but as much in life does, it can cut both ways.

Fake News Digital social media has brought so many of us closer together. We are able to communicate instantly no matter the physical proximity, which is an accomplishment that few born before the turn of the century could have imagined. In addition to the immediate personal exchange of information, the world has become accustomed to seeing and hearing significant events simultaneous to their occurrences. Although it’s generally considered “good” to be up to date, the danger exists in slanted presentation of the information. There are many instances where highly biased accounting of news is presented as being factual. Video editing to present a view that may or may not be consistent with the real facts has become, unfortunately, too often the case. In the pioneering days of television news, broadcasters such as Walter Cronkite simply relayed the facts without editorial opinion (even though he was personally of very liberal persuasion). It would be hard to expect the news media to return to purely reporting the news, but we can hope for an unbiased accounting. Too many cases of slanted reporting has led to people having to retract their initial reactions posted to social media sites because it was later determined to be the opposite of what was originally thought. We need to be careful and verify our facts before we cause problems for ourselves and others. Double checking sources and facts is never a bad thing. ~ George Cline

Mama’s Chicken Casserole This recipe is one of my Mama’s, that has been in the family for many years. It means a lot to me because my Grandmother Hughes, always requested that I make it for her in her later years. I might add, there was nothing I loved more than cooking for my grandmother … whom had a very refined taste palate and was a great critique on anything and everything I made for her. I valued her opinion not only my cooking styles but many subjects in life. One whom lives to be 100 years old and gives you advice, you might want to heed it. Ingrediants 2 Tbsps. Extra Virgin Olive Oil 2 Boneless, skinless Chicken Breast cut into bite sized pieces 4 Boneless, skinless Chicken thighs cut into small bite sized pieces. You can use all white or all dark meat if you like. You also can put more or less meat, according to your personal preference. ½ tsp salt 1 tsp black pepper ¼ tsp red pepper flakes 1 red bell peppers chopped into chunky pieces 1 green bell pepper chopped into chunky pieces 2 medium onions chopped into large chunky pieces 1 – 4 oz can Giorgio chunky portabella mushrooms undrained 1 – 10.5 can of Campbells cream of mushroom 1 – 10.5 oz can of Campbells cream of chicken 1 ½ cups Blue Plate mayonnaise 1 ½ cups heavy whipping cream ½ tsp salt, or to your taste ½ tsp black pepper ½ tsp red pepper flakes ½ tsp of Tony Chachere’s More Spice Creole Seasoning 1 tbsp. garlic powder 1 box of pasta of your choice (I prefer to use shells or angel hair) cook according to directions on the box, about 3 to 4 cups of pasta … more or less, according to your pasta ratio preferred!
Directions Start with a nice sized pot that can be used on the oven top or inside, preferable a nonstick. On a medium to high heat add the olive oil and let it heat for about a minute on a medium to high setting, then add the already prepared bite sized chicken pieces. Sprinkle the ½ teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper and ¼ teaspoon of red pepper flakes on top then stir it up to make sure the seasoning is distributed well throughout the chicken chunks pieces. Continue to stir for about 10 minutes or until the chicken some of the juices start to evaporate.
started to evaporate, about an additional 5 minutes. I usually start my pasta about the time I add the can of mushrooms so that it will be ready and drained after this last step. You’ll also want to preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Now add your Campbells soups, heavy whipping cream, mayonnaise and mix it well. Turn your heat down to a low to medium setting. Let it simmer about 3 minutes while you add the final spices, then mix well to be sure the spices are well distributed throughout. Stir occasionally until the mixture is heated well about 5 more minutes and remove from the heat. Add your prepared pasta of choice and fold into the mixture until it all covered and even distribution is achieved. At this point, if you’ve used a pot that can be put in the oven go ahead and add topping of choice on top distributing it evenly. If you have to transfer to a casserole dish do so after spraying spray with cooking spray, then place your toppings on it. Place your dish in the oven for 45 minutes. If you choose to add cheese as a topping do so when there’s 15 minutes left on the timer. When it’s done, let it sit for about 10 minutes before serving hot or warm. Bon appetite!
Now add the chopped bell peppers and onions and continue to stir for an additional 10 minutes. Add the can of mushrooms undrained. Continue to stir until the onions and bell peppers become limp and the liquids have
