the little things By Amanda Hayward

Thanks, Mom! -

W

atching my 6-year-old daughter Eva's enthralling aerial skills for the first time at a local studio we love — The Dayton Dance Centre — I felt happy. Look at her go, it’s like she has done this a million times before. I wonder what she will be when she grows up, I thought. The studio is a bit of a drive for us, but I am willing to take the drive if it means seeing her enthusiasm and excitement. As I sat there starstruck, I spoke to a lady who was waiting for her private lessons to begin. Her eyes were set on Eva — she couldn't get enough of her as she twirled and spun around in the purple silks. “Oh, she is so cute,” she said. “I could watch her all day!” We talked about the busy mom life overflowing with drop offs, pickups, recreational activities and living a life that literally revolves around the kids. She said how she is now at the point in her life where the kids are grown up and she has tons more time on her hands, hence the dance lessons. “I remember those days. I know they were busy but I really do miss them.” This landed with me. I thought about how I was a kid once and how my mom would drive me back and forth to gymnastics, cheerleading, dance and the list goes on. I can now say, I get it now, Mom. I get how hard it must have been to put us kids first no matter how tired and busy you were, but you did it. For Mother’s Day, I first want to recognize all of the moms out there who sacrifice their time for their kids while also thanking my mom. If it weren’t for you, Mom, I wouldn’t be the kind of mom I am today. I get it now and I know it wasn't easy. So thank you, Mom, for:

BUSY, BUSY. It’s difficult keeping up with daily routines, let alone your kids’ appointments! Here’s why it’s important to stay on top of your own health, too.

Vital Screenings for Mom

N

o matter what life throws at you, mama, your health is a priority. But we know it’s not that easy given moms tend to juggle — a lot. So if you find yourself drawing a blank when your doctor asks you when you last had your Pap smear or mammogram, it may be time to reevaluate your wellness.

PAP SMEARS VS. MAMMOGRAMS A Pap smear is a screening tool for cervical cancer looking for abnormal cervical cells and the presence of the human papilloma virus (HPV) which can cause cell changes, says Justina Staroska, CNM at the Center for Women’s Health and Wellness. “Women should have their first Pap test at age 21,” Staroska says. “If that test is normal, you can wait up to three years for your next Pap test. Women are still encouraged to have an annual well woman exam to update their health information, medications, risk factor and have pelvic and breast exams. At age 30 to 65, women can have a Pap test only, an HPV test only, or a combination of Pap test and HPV. They should discuss with their practitioner which option is right for them.” A mammogram is a screening tool for breast cancer. At your mammogram screening, you will get x-rays of the breast that look for lumps and abnormalities before they can even be felt, says Staroska. This leads to earlier diagnosis and treatment. As for the frequency of mammogram screenings, recommendations vary. Several societies recommend varying screening schedules therefore most practitioners have taken an individualized approach, says Michelle Federer, DO, at Mercy Health — Obstetrics and Gynecology, East. She says

that The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends women begin their mammograms at age 40 if there is no family history or risk factors for breast cancer. If there is a family history, a baseline mammogram is recommended at 35. Women between the ages 45 to 54 should get mammograms every one to two years; for 55 and older it’s every two years or continue with yearly screenings. Screening should continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live 10 more years or longer, says Staroska. OTHER VITAL SCREENINGS So you are up to speed with your Paps and mammogram, great! But not so fast — there are some other important health screenings you should know about. “It is important that women remember that gynecologic cancers are not the only issues that women can have,” says Federer. “Testing for colon cancer, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, thyroid, etc., is important as well.” Some non-gynecologic issues include blood pressure (at least once every two years); cholesterol (recommended starting age is 45 for women with no known risk factors for coronary heart disease, and age 20 for women with known risk factors); diabetes (if your blood pressure is 130/80 mm Hg or higher); and colon cancer screenings (between ages 45 - 75); according to Staroska. “Many health screenings can detect disease early when it is treatable and can prevent serious health problems,” she says. “So many women feel like taking time for their own health is being selfish. It is not cincinnatifamilymagazine.com

selfish! It’s quite the opposite.” Moms wear many hats: getting caught up in their careers, caring for their family and juggling the millions of other mom duties, so their health can easily slip through the cracks. Remember, taking care of you means taking care of your family, too. Amanda Hayward is editor of this publication and a mom of three.:

Healthy Tips For Moms • 30 minutes of Exercise Most Days of the Week: Walking, increasing active moments, parking further away, playing at the park, etc. • Eat a Healthy, Well-balanced Diet: Avoid processed and sugary foods. • Rest Up: Aim for at least seven hours of sleep each night. • Know your numbers: If you smoke, quit. Smoking increases your risk for many cancers and other diseases. • Take Time for Your Mental Health: Relieve stress with five minutes of meditation, deep breathing or some quiet time. • Schedule Preventative Appointments: Make annual appointments at a time that is easy to remember like your birthday or anniversary. MOM’S WORLD

Postnatal Health & Exercise forYOU

By Amanda Hayward and Tina Pratt

Y

our body just went through a whole lot carrying and birthing that tiny — or big — bundle. No matter how you delivered (C-section or vaginal) proper postnatal care is essential for you and your new baby’s health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the postpartum stage generally refers to the first six weeks after childbirth. This is a particularly vulnerable time which is why thorough medical care is vital. So what exactly is postnatal “medical care” and when can you get up and going again? Medical care is the medical treatment that moms should receive during that postpartum period. This can extend as far as 4 - 6 months depending on physical and emotional issues or complications; it really depends on you, as every woman is different. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists now recommends that postpartum care should be an ongoing process rather than a one-time checkup. ACOG now recommends that all women: • Have contact with their health care provider within three weeks of giving birth • Get ongoing medical care during the postpartum period • Have a complete postpartum checkup no later than 12 weeks after giving birth

Slow down mama! With a baby on the way or with a baby on board, it’s important to recognize that you’re strong ... yet fragile at the same time.

12 may 2022

It’s important to obtain the care that you need so you are healthy after giving birth to that beautiful bundle. But don’t wait until after Baby’s arrival to discuss a postpartum plan with your OB/Gyn; come up with a plan during your monthly prenatal care checkups.

Exercising During and After Pregnancy Another way to maintain your health during and after pregnancy is by exercising — once you are cleared by your OB/Gyn, of course. Following a safe exercise regimen during pregnancy reduces health risks for you and Baby; and after delivery, exercise is usually OK’d right around that 4 - 6 week mark, assuming you had a healthy and normal pregnancy. Kelly Hater, certified personal trainer and fitness and wellness coach and owner of Trainers Spot (a new local gym in Maineville, Oh), says there are numerous ways staying physically active can prevent complications during pre and postnatal. “As exercise decreases type 2 diabetes mellitus, it also de-

creases gestational diabetes mellitus,” Hater says. “As it may not completely prevent gestational diabetes, yet physical activity from the beginning can help manage it.” Gestational diabetes is diabetes diagnosed for the first time during pregnancy (gestation) — moms are tested for it around 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. Like other types of diabetes, gestational diabetes affects how your cells use sugar and can cause high blood sugar which can affect your pregnancy and your baby’s health. So regular exercise helps with strength, stamina, endurance in the delivery room, and even a healthy weight gain, she continues. “Physical activity will help weight gain during pregnancy,” says Hater. “A person within normal BMI or body fat level for their height and weight before pregnancy should aim for a 25 - 35 pound weight gain.” According to The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans 2nd edition, expecting or postpartum women should do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity per week, such as brisk walking. Sounds like a lot? Not really; remember that every little bit counts, so breaking it up throughout the week is ideal, especially if you are new to exercising. For example, 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Not only will you be physically ready to deliver your baby, your mental health will be more than ready, too. “Mental health, as exercising, releases endorphins to help you stay in a positive mindset,” Hater says. Every woman is different, but being active in some way is key. If you weight trained before pregnancy or if you were a runner, then it is usually OK to continue, says Hater. If you were sedentary before pregnancy, you should start walking and slowly build up to an exercise plan that is best for you.

About That Pelvic Floor and More Your pelvic floor goes through a lot of changes during and after pregnancy, so strengthening your pelvic floor muscles is super important. Once you enter into that long-awaited third trimester, your body prepares for birth. Your muscles become strained to support your growing baby and delivery. More than 30 percent of women who have a vaginal birth will experience pelvic trauma, causing damage to the pelvic floor muscle group, and exercising those muscles can help mitigate the stress that pregnancy and delivery places on the body. “A female pelvic floor is like a hammock,” says Hater. “It spans from your pelvic bone to the tailbone then side to side between the sitz bones. The pelvic floor is like any other muscle; we train our glutes, quads, and hamstring to have strong and stable legs. The pelvic floor muscles are no different, as these muscles hold the bladder, the uterus and bowels in the proper place.” The same goes for your abdominals. Training and conditioning both your pelvic floor and your abs will prevent weakening or a pelvic organ prolapse and diastasis recti (abs being separated during pregnancy from being stretched). Some go-to exercises that can ehlp include kegels (which engages the pelvic floor) and “vacuum training” (an isometric contraction that tenses the ab muscles without moving it). Talk to your doctor about safe and effective exercises for you. “Keep moving. Treat your body with respect. Put nutrient-dense foods into your body. Stick with the basics. Five Fabulous Bike Trails  Little Miami Scenic Bike Trail – The third longest paved trail in the U.S., this 78mile trail runs through many Ohio counties! Look in the sky for great views of planes taking off and landing! Located at 5057 Wooster Pike.  Smale Park – Spend an afternoon exploring the riverfront via bike. Hungry? There are plenty of great places to grab a bite to eat at The Banks. Head to West Mehring Way for access to paved pathways. Visit mysmaleriverfrontpark.org to learn more.  Miami Whitewater – Choose from the inner (1.4 miles) or outer (7.8 miles) Shaker Trace Loop for a beautiful paved nature bike ride The park is located at 9001 Mt. Bicycle Safety Measures Be sensible and always practice bicycle safety with your family! Did you know that good bike etiquette starts young and uses the senses?  Snap! Before hitting the road, it is important to put a helmet on and not just any helmet! Helmets need to be the right size and fit appropriately. Visit https://www. cdc.gov/headsup/helmets for more info.  Look! Always keep an eye out for road signs, which bicyclists should also obey. Look for car brake lights in driveways and be sure to share the path with folks passing you by. Bicyclists should also be seen - wear a bright shirt when you are biking to stand out!  Listen! Do you hear a car approaching? Do you hear someone vocalizing that they are trying to pass you up? If you hear a rumble of thunder, it may be time to head home! Keeping your ears open is an important way to stay safe while biking with the family. Other safety tips include walking bikes at crosswalks, checking your equipment before each ride, wearing sunscreen and staying properly hydrated. May is National Bicycle month, but the benefits can be experienced for a whole lifetime.
