Cool off this summer at The Dayton Art Institute, with The Antarctic Sublime & Elements of Nature: Water. The suite of exhibitions features three installations highlighting the many forms of water: frozen across the expansive and rocky terrain of the Perito Moreno glacier in Argentina, implied in a colony of 450 mechanized, interactive penguins, and free-flowing in a 10-foot-tall digital waterfall.

LOWER LEVEL Elements of Nature:Water The Antarctic Sublime Lower Court

Elements of Nature:Water presents two distinct installations examining the concept of water in various forms.

Contemporary Japanese artists’ collective teamLab drew inspiration from Japanese painting and woodblock prints to create a 10-foot digital waterfall called Universe of Water Particles, rendered at five times that of full High Definition.

This digital work will be on display alongside Edo-period (1603–1868) ukiyo-e woodblock prints from The Dayton Art Institute’s extensive collection.

In another gallery, a single, monumental photograph by contemporary Berlin-based artist Frank Thiel of the Perito Moreno glacier will be on display. Thiel has created breathtaking large-format images to capture the immense scale of the 18-mile-long by three-mile-wide formation, which is one of the few glaciers in the world that is actually growing.

UPPER LEVEL Elements of Nature:Water Great Hall

The Antarctic Sublime presents Penguins Mirror by Daniel Rozin, whose Snow Mirror and Brushed Metal Mirror were featured in the recent exhibition Into the Ether: Contemporary Light Artists. This colony of 450-mechanized penguins responds to visitor movements, providing an interactive element in the exhibitions.

RELATED FOCUS EXHIBITION Water in Japanese Art, July 16, 2016–January 29, 2017 Gallery 105 As an island nation, water is an important element in Japan; as such, it figures prominently in Japanese art. The Dayton Art Institute houses a strong collection of Edo-period (1603–1868) ukiyo-e woodblock prints and Japanese screen paintings, many of which feature this natural element as a solid, liquid, or vapor, but always full of vitality and energy. The depiction of water in its many forms is enormously influential to the Japanese ultra-technologist group teamLab, whose monumental digital waterfall is featured in the exhibition.
