Call to Duty World War Posters

with Tears of Stone:World War I Remembered, Photographs by Jane Alden Stevens

In conjunction with memorial remembrances surrounding the 100th anniversary of World War I and the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, The Dayton Art Institute presents Call to Duty: World War Posters and Tears of Stone: World War I Remembered, Photographs by Jane Alden Stevens. More than 80 original posters from World War I and World War II tell the story of the massive human efforts put forth during these twentiethcentury global conflicts. The posters explore themes such as recruitment, funding the wars, home-front conservation efforts, and campaigns by service organizations. Some of the greats of American illustration, such as Howard Chandler Christy, James Montgomery Flagg and Norman Rockwell, are featured. The exhibition also includes objects on loan from the National Museum of the United States Air Force, as well as uniform items from the Dayton Chapter of the American Red Cross, and other original items related to home-front war efforts. The companion exhibition Tears of Stone: World War I Remembered presents works by Cincinnati-based photographer Jane Alden Stevens. Over the course of two years and five trips to Europe, Stevens photographed World War I monuments, cemeteries and battlegrounds. Nearly 20 large-format prints highlight her interest in the visible manifestations of grief, memory and memorialization. For more about both exhibitions, visit daytonartinstitute.org/calltoduty.
