COMPANION LECTURE SERIES The Isabella Kirkland: Stilled Life Lecture Series will examine the fascinating overlap of science, history and art. Lectures are free for students and museum members, and included in museum or special exhibition admission for non-members. Lectures are held in the museum’s NCR Renaissance Auditorium unless otherwise noted.
Thursday, February 20, 6:30 p.m. Artist Lecture Artist Isabella Kirkland will discuss her paintings and her process for creating them. Saturday, March 1, 3:00 p.m. Dutch Still-Life Painting of the Golden Age Dr. George Keyes will discuss the Golden Age of 17th-century Dutch still-life painting and the impact of global trade on the arts.
ISABELLA KIRKLAND: STILLED LIFE
IN BLOOM:
Rendered in the crystalline clarity of 17th-century Dutch still-life painters, contemporary artist Isabella Kirkland’s portraits of flora and fauna present a dazzling array of detail that straddles art history, scientific illustration and natural history. Shown together for the first time, this exhibition features more than 50 of Kirkland’s works, as well as a host of preparatory drawings and studies in a variety of media. With their luscious colors and high-gloss finishes, some of which took over a year to create, these elaborate paintings celebrate decorative beauty, while at the same time delivering an arresting and timely narrative about environmental change.
In conjunction with Isabella Kirkland: Stilled Life, The Dayton Art Institute will present more than 30 works from its permanent collection, featuring nature in bloom. From floral still lifes to garden delights, the representation of nature’s bounty as an independent genre has flourished since the early 1600s and remains a popular subject for artists today. This exhibition will present some of the museum’s finest examples, as well as some lesser known works, to highlight and explore this popular genre.

Saturday, March 15, 3:00 p.m. Isabella Kirkland: Transforming Perception Dr. Elaine Miller will discuss contemporary art and how artists play a role in affecting our perception of nature and culture. Saturday, April 12, 3:00 p.m. Gathering Nature in a Time of Extinction: Isabella Kirkland’s Ecological Art Dr. Scott Hess will explore Kirkland’s paintings in relation to the development of natural history, collecting and environmental movements of the past two centuries. Saturday, April 26, 3:00 p.m. Bio-Diversity and Isabella Kirkland Dr. Ryan McEwan will discuss bio-diversity and the effect of climate change on species and human society. This lecture will be held at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery; free with Boonshoft Museum admission.
