FALL / WINTER 2014

FROM THE DIRECTOR Summer’s already winding down, and we’re looking ahead to fall and the return of our popular Oktoberfest celebration. Oktoberfest is our largest single event of the year and also the museum’s largest annual fundraiser – last year it brought nearly 24,000 guests to the museum grounds and generated record-breaking revenue of more than $630,000! It’s not only a wonderful community event, but also vitally important to everything we do throughout the year. Oktoberfest comes on the heels of this year’s Art Ball, which was the most successful in the event’s long history! Thank you to Art Ball Chairs Tamera Geesling and Thomas Roehrig, along with our fantastic Associate Board.

Thank you once again to the legislative delegation from the Miami Valley region, whose bipartisan support and advocacy were instrumental in helping secure this funding. Our summer special exhibition, Dayton Celebrates Glass, is entering its final weeks and has been enthusiastically received by the community. If you haven’t seen it yet, I encourage you to do so soon; it runs through September 28. Keep in mind that the exhibition’s final weekend is also Oktoberfest weekend. Kudos to Dr. Aimee Marcereau DeGalan and the entire curatorial team for organizing another fantastic exhibition. We’re all eagerly anticipating our Fall exhibition, Deco Japan: Shaping Art and Culture, 1920-1945. This traveling exhibition is the first held outside Tokyo dedicated to Japanese Art Deco and features a breathtaking selection of works from the world’s premier collection of Japanese art in the Deco style. See the feature in this issue for all the details, and be sure to also check out the sneak preview of what’s coming in 2015 – we think you’ll like what you see! Thank you for your continued support as members of The Dayton Art Institute. We look forward to seeing you at your museum throughout the coming months and into the holiday season. Best regards,

As we announced in the previous Member Magazine, the recent State Capital Appropriations Bill signed by Ohio Governor John Kasich included nearly $2.2M to help fund extensive renovation projects at the museum. Preparatory work and design studies are underway, and we’ll be reporting on progress in the coming months. Our building requires work in several key areas: HVAC systems; ingress and egress points; and support systems for technology that will make it accessible and relevant to the next generation. Capital improvements will be able to address deferred maintenance, and energy efficiency measures will be completed. These changes will help the museum continue to draw audiences that will support economic vitality and a high quality of life in our region.

SUPPORT THE MUSEUM WHILE YOU SHOP!

Did you know that you can help support the museum every time you shop at Kroger or Dorothy Lane Market? Kroger’s Community Rewards program and Dorothy Lane Market’s Good Neighbor program will make contributions to the museum when you enroll and use each store’s shopping card for purchases.

ANN DEETER REMEMBERED As the previous issue of the Member Magazine went to press, The DAI family was saddened to hear of the passing of Ann Deeter, at the age of 104. Ann was the longtime registrar of the School of The Dayton Art Institute and a familiar face at the museum for decades. She visited The Dayton Art Institute for the first time in 1929 and knew after spending an hour in the Oriental Gallery that this was where she wanted to study and work. “I had never had an art lesson in my life (at that time), but I always wanted to be an artist,” quipped Deeter during a visit to the Norman Rockwell exhibition in 2011. More than 80 years after first arriving at the museum, she

still loved to explore the galleries of The Dayton Art Institute! She went on to receive a diploma of fine arts from The DAI school in the 1930s and ultimately served as the school’s registrar from 1937 to 1973. Ann is remembered as a mentor and friend to thousands of students who attended the School of The Dayton Art Institute, including Jonathan Winters (pictured at right with Ann).

It’s a simple process to enroll. For Kroger Community Rewards, go to www.kroger.com/ communityrewards to enroll, and designate The DAI as your preferred nonprofit by using ID #83303. To enroll in the Dorothy Lane Market’s Good Neighbor program, go to www.dorothylane. com/goodneighbor and select The DAI by using ID #236. Watch for email notifications, as you have to re-enroll in the programs each year.

The John Barlow Hudson sculpture Uncarved Block IX: Pearl in the museum’s Contemporary Art gallery was given to The DAI as a gift of the Alumni of the School of The Dayton Art Institute, in honor of Deeter’s many years of service to the museum.

THANK YOU TO OUR ART BALL SPONSORS! The Dayton Art Institute welcomed nearly 900 guests for its 57th Art Ball on June 14! DAYTON METRO LIBRARY & DAI TO ‘REIMAGINE’ WORKS

When Montgomery County residents overwhelmingly supported the 2012 bond issue to rebuild Dayton Metro Library’s facilities, they voted to expand our community’s civic, intellectual and economic capacity. The Dayton Metro Library, thanks to a private bequest, is also building

our community’s public art collection through the ReImagining Works project, managed by Jane A. Black, Director of Engagement at The Dayton Art Institute. For each of the 17 new or renovated buildings, community members will have the opportunity to vote for favorite works from The DAI permanent collection. Those treasured

pieces will be used as inspirational source material by contemporary artists, who will create wholly new, site-specific, two-dimensional and three-dimensional artworks for each library. For more about the voting or proposal processes, and to see the artwork chosen for the Electra C. Doren branch on Troy Street, visit www.daytonmetrolibrary.org/works.

SUSAN MARTIS JOINS EDUCATION TEAM In May, Dr. Susan Martis joined The Dayton Art Institute as the Associate Curator of Education and leads the education team under the supervision of Director of Engagement Jane A. Black. Susan earned a Ph.D. in Art History from Case Western Reserve University. Her fields of specialization are late 19th- and early 20thcentury European and American art. She brings a diverse range of professional experiences to The DAI that complement her responsibilities here. She taught art history at several universities, including comprehensive surveys of art and courses about the history of American art and architecture, the history of photography, Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, and twentieth-century art and architecture. As a

research associate at the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities at Case Western Reserve University she developed programs for faculty, student and public events. Susan also worked for the Putnam Sculpture Collection at this University. At the Cleveland Museum of Art, she created curricular materials and presented lessons for the distance learning program. Susan is enthusiastic about expanding awareness of the quality of The DAI’s collection through the revision and development of educational programs and creating interactive exhibitions for the Experiencenter. Implementing new professional development programs for teachers and correlating programs with new common core curriculum standards are among her initial goals. She looks forward to working with staff, docents and volunteers to accomplish these aims, as well as outreach to the community as she learns more about the museum and the people who support it.

In December 2013, 3rd graders from Edison Elementary School visited for “Discover Science and Math.” They viewed William Stanley Haseltine’s painting Porto Venere, Spezia, Italy, 1878, and discussed the difference between wind speed and average wind speed; reviewed 2-digit subtraction; and estimated how fast the wind is blowing in the picture using the Beaufort Scale. Then, they went back to school and built an anemometer that won First Prize in the District Science Fair! We are grateful for our 2013-14 Art Connections sponsors, the Leslie C. Mapp Foundation and the Verizon Foundation. Call 937-512-0152 to make reservations for tours during the 2014-15 school year.

RIDE TO ART WITH RTA Wondering how to transport your classroom to the museum? Ride To Art is a partnership with Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority that provides free bus service to visit the museum on select days of the week. This service is available to underserved schools, teachers and students within the city of Dayton and surrounding communities with RTA routes. Ride To Art is available September through May. DAI CURATOR SELECTED FOR FELLOWSHIP IN CURATORIAL LEADERSHIP

The Dayton Art Institute’s Curator of Collections and Exhibitions, Dr. Aimee Marcereau DeGalan, was selected to be one of 12 curators from an international pool of applicants to participate in the

Center for Curatorial Leadership’s (CCL) intensive fellowship program. Aimed at training curators to assume leadership positions in museums in the rapidly evolving cultural climate of the 21st century, the fellowship began with two weeks in New York, where fellows learned from Columbia Business School professors on such topics as strategic thinking, endowment management and moral leadership. Evenings concluded in roundtable discussions with directors, curators, and trustees from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of

Modern Art, the Guggenheim, and many more. Following New York, CCL fellows shadowed directors at peer institutions for a week, taking Aimee to the High Museum in Atlanta where she shadowed Michael E. Shapiro, the Nancy and Holcombe T. Green, Jr. Director, who is known for forging strategic partnerships with major institutions.

area. Fellows presented their recommendations to trustees at the conclusion of the week. Aimee is grateful for this opportunity and to The DAI’s board and staff who supported her in this venture. She described the entire experience as “transformative.” “It opened up new ways of thinking that are in line with many of today’s art institutions who are in a position of redefining themselves, which is an exciting thing to think about, especially in Dayton.”

Following World War I, the world changed rapidly and was set against the pulsating beat of the jazz era. The period witnessed the rise of film, the advent of skyscrapers, leisurely air travel, and the modern girl with her cigarette, short hair and cropped skirts. Frivolity, luxury, and a sense of hopefulness pervaded the air. With the machine age came an emphasis on speed. The art world responded with Art Deco, which found expression in its use of themes and appropriations of other art forms from cultures all over the world. Bold colors and designs from the graphic world of advertising found form on everything from house-wares to posters, fine arts to matchbox covers. By World War II, Art Deco had left its mark on almost every medium of visual art. Deco Japan: Shaping Art and Culture, 1920–1945, with nearly 200 works, reveals the widespread and particular impact of Art Deco on Japanese culture. Through a wide range of mediums— sculpture, painting, prints, ceramics, lacquer ware, jewelry, textiles, furniture, and graphic ephemera—this exhibition introduces the spectacular craftsmanship and sophisticated designs of Japan’s contribution to the movement to pull viewers in to this rich period in world history and visual culture.

This summer, The DAI welcomed Peter Doebler and Tracy Flagg as Hone Fellows to work on the What Is a Masterpiece? program. The Hone Research Fellowship is supported by Kate and Steve Hone, who funded the Fellowship in 2013. The Hones have been involved with arts and education for years. For them, What Is a Masterpiece? was the perfect program to support because it involves art, history and technology.

What Is a Masterpiece? provides electronic access to select pieces in the museum collection by using smartphones and other Wi-Fi enabled mobile devices, iPads (available for rent at the Guest Services Desk) or personal computers. The fellows research several works of art using curatorial files, library resources and electronic databases. They convert the material they find into information about the artists and historic context of the works of art they study.

STUDENTS TAKE PART IN SUMMER ART AND LITERACY PROGRAM For six weeks this summer, 60 students participated in the Summer Art and Literacy Program, a partnership of DECA Prep, The DAI, Boonshoft Museum of Discovery and Dayton Metro Library. For the third year, this program supported literacy acquisition and retention. Masks from The DAI inspired students to learn about the history of masks,

discuss adornment, and reflect on their individual identities. Students created masks, exhibited them in The DAI’s Shaw Gothic Cloister, and led family members on a tour of their work. For the first time, this learning experience will be extended in the community; the Dayton Cultural Center plans to exhibit the masks from August 15 through October 15.

ARTTREK RETURNS! ArtTrek, the museum’s travel program for members, has received a makeover and will include activities and travels for families, as well as those seeking entertainment, immersion in art and scholarly pursuits. Wendy Lewis, the new Volunteer ArtTrek Coordinator, has gathered a team – Julie Bolton, Ericka Eastin, Lyndsay Coleman and Gary Mitchner – with varied talents to create the best of all possible worlds of art travel. You won’t be able to miss them in their new orange polo shirts! The ArtTrek team has planned its first

outing to correspond with Dayton Celebrates Glass: a trip to the most important glass collection in Ohio at the Toledo Museum of Art on September 13. A limited number of spaces are still available for this day trip! ArtTrek has also announced an excursion to Chicago, December 6-7, to attend a new exhibit about David Bowie (yes, you read correctly!) at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. The trip also includes a visit to the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as various evening activities in the Windy City.

For more information, to sign up for our mailing list or to register for a trip, visit daytonartinstitute.org/arttrek, call 937-223-5277, ext. 237 or email arttrek@daytonart.org.
