FROM THE DIRECTOR of many windows with high efficiency units will begin in the coming weeks. Improvements to the building’s HVAC and technology infrastructure are also taking place. Please be aware that there may be some gallery changes due to work schedules. I’m excited to announce that in May, Ohio Governor John Kasich signed a new State Capital Appropriations Bill, which included another $1 million for The Dayton Art Institute, to help fund additional renovation and improvement projects for the museum’s 2019 centennial. We’ll be announcing more plans related to this funding in the coming months. SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS Cool off this summer at The Dayton Art Institute as we continue the “Year of the Classical Elements,” presenting three contemporary installations which address the element of water. Presenting The Antarctic Sublime & Elements of Nature: Water these exhibitions are sure to delight! Elements of Nature: Water Gallery 209 (off Great Hall) Two distinct installations examine the concept of water in various forms. In traditional Japanese painting and woodblock prints, oceans, rivers, and bodies of water are expressed as a series of curvilinear lines. These lines give the impression of life, as though water itself were a living creature. It is from this premise that contemporary Japanese artists’ group teamLab drew their inspiration to create the over 10-foot digital waterfall called Universe of Water Particles, rendered at five times that of full High Definition, which allows for intricate and extreme detail of the work. This digital work will be on display alongside Edo-period (1603–1868) ukiyo-e woodblock prints from The Dayton Art Institute’s extensive collection, to explore the awesome power and might of water. Gallery 118 (off Lower Court) In another gallery, a monumental photograph by contemporary Berlinbased artist Frank Thiel of the Perito Moreno glacier will be on display. Located in the Los Glaciares National Park in Patagonia, Argentina, this glacier is part of the third largest ice cap in the world. Thiel has created large-format images to capture the immense scale of the 18-milelong by three-mile-wide formation, which is one of the few glaciers in the world that is actually growing. Reasons abound yet simultaneously confound many scientists and researchers as to the glacier’s growth, and the debate remains one that is very relevant today. Thiel’s photograph of Argentina’s glaciers makes the viewer question the transient nature of what is around them, and in tandem, it provides the opportunity to discuss the fragility of man in the face of nature’s awesome might, while simultaneously emphasizing man’s hubris and determination.

A colony of 450-mechanized penguins provides an interactive installation that responds to visitors. As creatures of the Antarctic terrain, and highly adaptive to life in water, the inclusion of the penguins in our series of exhibitions fits thematically, provides an immersive and responsive environment for viewers, and also offers an opportunity to further explore the Polar Regions and their climate shifts, ideas of natural selection and the randomness of genetic drift.

PETER DOEBLER JOINS CURATORIAL TEAM
Peter Doebler, Kettering Postdoctoral Curatorial Assistant in Asian Art
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Peter L. Doebler as Kettering Postdoctoral Curatorial Assistant in Asian Art, starting this August. In anticipation of our centennial in 2019, during which the museum plans a major reinterpretation and reinstallation of several areas of its collection, this endowed position is a two-year term, with a possible Kehinde Wiley, (American b. 1977), The Honourable Augustus Keppel, Admiral of the Blue II, 2006, oil on canvas, 84 x 60 inches (213.4 x 152.4 cm). The dominance of selfie culture and social media sites allows for the presentation of multiple personas, providing an opportunity for individuals to select the type of image they craft for society. Traditional portraiture serves a similar function, as it allows the subject to present a carefully articulated image to the world, one the artist and subject simultaneously participate in constructing. Featuring nearly 30 objects from The DAI’s permanent collection, along with several important loans, the exhibition Portraiture: Mirror or Mask? raises a number of questions related to how one constructs and conceals their identity through portraiture.
CONSERVATION EFFORTS RECEIVE BOOST Thank you to all who have donated to recent conservation projects at the museum! After Lynn Hulsey’s feature about our conservation efforts appeared in the Dayton Daily News, The DAI received support for the conservation of Pier Francesco Bissolo’s Holy Family with a Donor in a Landscape, as well as funding for the purchase of a 17th-century ebonized cabinet-maker’s pear wood frame for Ruisdael’s Landscape with Waterfall and Castle (c.1670).
This exhibition provides the curatorial and education departments an opportunity to test some labeling strategies and we ask your help in offering feedback as to which types you prefer—a survey and notebook are located within the gallery.
Peter received his doctorate in 2015 from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, in Art and Religion, with a dissertation related to the relationship of the sublime and the paintings of Hiroshi Senju. He is widely published, with his efforts focusing on the intersection of Japanese and western art, film, and religion. For the past year and a half, he has held a research fellowship in museum engagement here at the museum, where he developed content for What is a Masterpiece?, an interactive interpretive guide to the museum’s collection.
To learn more about ongoing conservation projects, visit Gallery 222 to see six more works in need of conservation, or contact the Development department at 937-512-0139 to learn how you can help preserve and present the collection. ART + CORE CONNECTIONS: NEW NAME, NEW CONTENT
NEW ‘REIMAGINING WORKS’ ART UNVEILED The Dayton Art Institute’s ReImagining Works partnership continues with the Dayton Metro Library (DML), and artwork was recently unveiled at the newly opened Miami Township and Northwest Branch Libraries. At Miami Township, Stefan Chinov’s installation Four Lozenges was inspired by the Shang Dynasty Ritual Wine Vessel from The DAI’s permanent collection. At the Northwest Branch Library, four new works are featured: Amy Kollar Anderson’s Marketplace of the Mind, Marsha Pippenger’s Spaces Between Stones, Virginia Kistler’s Untitled, and Francis
Schanberger’s Scattered Hoard. The pieces drew inspiration from the Relief Fragment from Persepolis and the Kuosi (Elephant Mask) Society Costume in the museum’s collection. As this issue was being produced, artwork was also unveiled at the New Lebanon Branch Library. Watch for more about this installation in the next Member Magazine. For more about these artworks and the ReImagining Works project, visit daytonmetrolibrary.org/works. Click the block below to watch the Northwest Branch artworks being installed.
Art + Core Connections, formerly called Art Connections, has been revised and updated to affirm our commitment to providing opportunities to enrich curriculum content. Looking at art and artifacts brings knowledge and history to life, while allowing students to practice skills of communication, collaboration, critical thinking, cultural awareness and creativity. An educator’s evaluation of a revised tour describes that the docent, “did an excellent job of connecting the art to information about the countries of origin that the students already knew. He engaged the students in interesting conversations with good, thoughtful questions.” Visit daytonartinstitute.org/acc for more information about the revised program.

THE DAI JOINS MUSEUMS ON US®
STORIES OF PLANNED GIVING: LARRY GLICKLER & CHARLES QUINN Art has always played an important part in Larry Glickler’s life, and when the Carnell Circle was established to encourage legacy gifts to the museum, he was among the group’s charter members. “I’ve always been an arts person,” Larry recalled. “I’ve always been interested and involved in both the visual and performing arts. I grew up in Columbus and have been a member of The Dayton Art Institute since coming to Dayton in 1980, and am also a longtime member of the Jefferson Patterson Society.”
The Dayton Art Institute has joined the Bank of America Museums on Us® program, which provides Bank of America and Merrill Lynch cardholders free general admission to more than 150 arts, cultural and educational institutions during the first full weekend of every month. To qualify for the Museums on Us program, Bank of America/ Merrill Lynch customers simply present their credit or debit card and a valid photo ID at The DAI’s Guest Services Desk on the first full weekend of the month to gain one free general admission*.
Larry and Charles have established a planned gift of a bequest with a charitable remainder trust to go to The Dayton Art Institute.
Larry and Charles have been together for 16 years, and they both consider Dayton to be unique for the size and diversity of its arts community, in relation to the city’s size. Larry currently serves on the Victoria Theatre Association Board and has served on many other community arts and civic boards over the years. Larry noted that he rarely places restrictions on gifts he makes. By making an unrestricted gift, Larry and Charles hope to contribute to the overall betterment of the museum, by helping to build endowments for general operations, to make certain it remains accessible to all for future generations. “We’re so proud of what Michael has done here and what he is accomplishing in opening up the Art Institute to more of the general public,” Larry said. “That’s something that we’ve really admired.” For more information about the Carnell Circle and planned giving opportunities, please contact Ryan Pasco, Individual Giving Manager, at 937-512-0139 or plannedgiving@daytonart.org.
For more about the program, including a list of participating venues, visit daytonartinstitute.org/ museumsonus or bankofamerica.com/museums.
NEW GUEST SERVICES DESK INSTALLED
* The offer is limited to the cardholder and excludes fundraising events, special exhibitions and ticketed programs (not to be combined with other offers).
Our new Guest Services Desk was installed earlier in July. The accompanying photo was taken at the ribbon cutting ceremony on July 13.
#THROWBACKTHURSDAY
Construction of the new desk was funded through our 2014 power2give campaign and a generous gift from Nancy and Jerry Nowak. Thank you to everyone who helped make a more user-friendly Guest Services Desk a reality!
BLUE STAR MUSEUMS PROGRAM OFFERS MILITARY DISCOUNTS As The Dayton Art Institute begins the countdown to its 2019 centennial, we’ll be featuring historical photos from museum’s archives. The first of those is a view of the museum’s original home from 1919-1929, which was located at the corner of Monument Avenue and St. Clair Street in downtown Dayton. Watch our Facebook page every Thursday afternoon for more #ThrowbackThursday photos, and check out the slideshow at dayotnartinstitute. org/history.
“I was always interested in the arts, but I never really considered philanthropy prior to meeting Larry,” Charles said. “Today, I would say it’s important to give back to your community. We both agree it’s important to give to the arts, as well as other organizations.”
The Dayton Art Institute has once again participated in the annual Blue Star Museums Program, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission
to the nation’s active-duty military personnel from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2016. During the program, The DAI will waive its suggested admission fee and offer free general admission to the permanent collection for all active-duty military personnel and their families, as well as discounted admission to the special exhibitions The Antarctic Sublime & Elements of Nature: Water. In addition, active duty military personnel and their families can receive a $10 discount on the purchase of a new museum membership or membership renewal. For more about the program, visit daytonartinstitute.org/bluestarmuseums.

THANK YOU TO OUR 2015 ANNUAL FUND CONTRIBUTORS! As a non-profit organization, The Dayton Art Institute counts on the support of our Annual Fund contributors to open our doors more than 250 days each year and ensure the museum’s fiscal vitality. Special exhibitions, events and educational programming such as those featured here wouldn’t be possible without that support. For more information or to make a donation, contact Annual Giving Manager Ryan Pasco, at 937-512-0139 or rpasco@daytonart.org.

RAVAGED SUBLIME Landscape Photography in the 21st Century October 15, 2016–January 8, 2017
Showcasing the work of contemporary photographers Edward Burtynsky and Richard Mosse, this exhibition demonstrates the continued interest in sublime landscapes, yet with a shift in artist intent and tone. No longer do these images speak to human possibilities or nature’s hold over humans; the works presented highlight the impact and human traces that ravage these landscapes. Utilizing similar visual techniques as their 19th-century predecessors, these photographs demonstrate the tantalizing draw we still have towards landscape photography, while drawing attention to contemporary environmental and political issues. This exhibition is a participating venue of FotoFocus. To learn more, visit daytonartinstitute.org/ravagedsublime. fotofocusbiennial.org Watch for a full feature in our next Member Magazine.
