FROM THE DIRECTOR Spring is in bloom–figuratively and literally–here at your Dayton Art Institute! Our new cherry trees, part of the Operation 1000 Cherry Trees Project and made possible by the generosity of HORAN, produced their first blooms in April. We’re also excited to share that an urban Cherry Blossom Trail, featuring 100 more cherry trees, will ultimately connect The DAI and Carillon Park. That theme is carried over into the focus exhibition Blossoming Spring, currently on view in Gallery 105. Be sure to see it the next time you’re at the museum.

We hope you had the opportunity to see our special exhibition Kay WalkingStick: An American Artist, and that you’ll make plans to see our summer exhibition, Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and the Art of Independence. Also organized by the Smithsonian, it explores the intricate beadwork created by a community of women living and working together in South Africa. The DAI is the very first stop for this new touring exhibition!

Thanks to the Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority (RTA), there is a beautiful new lighted bus stop shelter at the base of the walkway on Riverview Avenue. If you live in the downtown area, don’t forget to also take advantage of the Link Dayton Bike Share station in front of the museum on Belmonte Park North–May is National Bike Month!

UBUHLE WOMEN Beadwork and the Art of Independence June 24–September 10, 2017 DAZZLING BEADWORK FROM SOUTH AFRICA ON DISPLAY THIS SUMMER! Mark your calendars to view stunning handiwork and beaded tapestries from South Africa in The Dayton Art Institute’s upcoming summer special exhibition, Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and the Art of Independence!

The exhibition showcases a new form of bead art, the ndwango (“cloth”), developed by a community of women living and working together in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Using skills handed down through generations, and working in their own unique style, the women create abstract as well as figurative subjects for their ndwangos.

Ubuhle means “beauty” in the Xhosa and Zulu languages and it describes the shimmering quality of light on glass that for the Xhosa people has a particular spiritual significance.

The exhibition was developed by the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum, Washington, D.C., in cooperation with Curators Bev Gibson, Ubuhle Beads and James Green, and it is organized for tour by International Arts & Artists. The Dayton Art Institute will be the first venue for this new tour!

Draw from the Collection: Contemporary Beading Saturday, July 15, 1–3 p.m.

Explore textile arts through history and around the world as seen in the museum’s collection, and sample the beaded embroideries in the special exhibition.

Learn how the Ubuhle Women transform flat cloth (reminiscent of Xhosa headscarves and skirts) into a contemporary art form. After a gallery experience, we will create a beaded design, inspired by the exhibition, on bead looms.

RED: ENDLESS ATTRACTION On view through July 16, 2017 Did you know The DAI houses over 17,000 photographs and works on paper, all of which need to be rotated frequently in order to preserve them for future generations? With that in mind, the Curatorial Department is making changes in the focus exhibition Red: Endless Attraction.

Exploring how a diverse grouping of artists across time periods, cultures, and mediums have used red to various effects, this exhibition continues through July 2017 with additional works by Andy Warhol, Marko Spalatin, Giovanni Baglione, and John Salt.

FOCUS EXHIBITION Blossoming Spring, Gallery 105 On view through June 25, 2017 No flower is more associated with Japanese culture than cherry blossoms. Since the days of courtly life in the Heian era (794–1185), these gentle flowers have inspired countless poems, paintings, and flower-viewing parties.

Proclaiming the arrival of spring, blossoms are associated with youth and new beginnings. Yet their temporary nature—here today, tomorrow scattering in the wind— encapsulates the transience of life and the constant change that both nature and humans must endure. Step into spring with a sampling of ukiyo-e woodblock prints, drawn from the museum’s collection, that depict cherry and ume plum blossoms amid the celebrations of human life.

A new focus exhibition of Japanese prints is being planned for late summer. Watch for more information at daytonartinstitute.org and by following the museum on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

GALLERY 209, ART OF THE ANCIENT MEDITERRANEAN WORLD, IS OPEN!

Closed for several months due to nearby restroom renovations, Gallery 209 has reopened!

This gallery, located just off the Great Hall, features artworks from some of the best-known ancient cultures, including Egypt, Greece, and Rome, as well as co-existing smaller cultures.

Made in diverse styles, from realistic to abstract, the objects seen here served both daily needs, such as food and cosmetics, and expressed larger human aspirations—life after death and a connection with the divine.

NEW ACQUISITION From summer 2017, the Japanese galleries at The DAI will have a new resident, a dazzling suit of samurai armor! Acquired with funds provided by the Kettering Fund, the armor will be in Gallery 107, a fitting counterpart for the nearby samurai swords and sword fittings currently on view.

Visitors can now see one of these iconic representations of Japanese history and culture up close, getting to appreciate the full range of Japanese craftsmanship, from lacquer and metal work to silk fabric and stenciled leather, all combining to create an image of fierce beauty. Especially striking is the helmet bowl, signed and dated on the inside by Myōchin Nobuie, one of the celebrated armor makers of the Muromachi period (1336–1573), and a fine example of a suji-kabuto (ridged helmet), made from 62 iron plates that are riveted together.

PERFORMING ART OPENS MAY 6 IN THE LANGE FAMILY EXPERIENCENTER Join us on Saturday, May 6, from 1 to 3 p.m. for the opening of a completely new exhibition in The Lange Family Experiencenter! Discover how visual artists convey movement and are inspired by a variety of art forms. Paintings, sculptures and prints range from naturalistic to abstract, with lines, colors and poses activating the way we look at and respond to them. On view until April 2018, this multicultural exploration includes the subjects of modern dance, theater and music. Experience the liveliness of art and imitate the actions you see.

DIRECT YOUR PASSION FOR ART INTO GUIDING VISITORS THROUGH THE MUSEUM! In August 2017, we will begin training a new group of guides, known as docents, who are museum volunteers dedicated to engaging youth and adults in the community with The DAI collection and exhibitions.

If you enjoy art, learning, and lively experiences, this is a meaningful way to support the museum and the community, especially leading up to The DAI’s Centennial in 2019. People from a variety of backgrounds are welcome; no previous art training is necessary, we will provide the foundation for the knowledge and gallery engagement strategies needed for success.

Upon successful completion of the nine-month training program, a oneyear commitment to providing tours is required. Training is free, except for the purchase of a textbook. YECK COLLEGE ARTIST FELLOW EXHIBITION Since January, the 2017 Yeck College Artist Fellows have been busy teaching art studio sessions to 12 Yeck High School Scholarship students at The Dayton Art Institute. These high school students created artwork using clay, wire, collage materials, and oil paint, while learning a variety of new techniques from their Yeck College Artist Fellows. In addition to teaching, the college fellows have been busy creating their own artwork for a group exhibition. On May 11, 6–8 p.m., we will celebrate the work of these young artists at an opening reception, combined with a reception for the Yeck High School Scholarship students and their artwork. The Yeck College Artist Fellow Exhibition will be on view in the South Gallery on the museum’s lower level from May 11 through August 13.

2017 HOUK AWARD WINNER ANNOUNCED R. Darden Bradshaw received the 2017 Pamela P. Houk Award for Excellence in Art Education.

Darden’s commitment to the arts as both teacher and practicing artist set her apart as an inspiration to her colleagues, students, and the community. Darden is an Assistant Professor and Area Coordinator in the Department of Visual Art at the University of Dayton. Darden notably advanced the opportunities for UD students with her creation and leadership of the Living Glass: Sustaining Memory through Glass project.

Darden’s commitment to art education extends far beyond the classroom: she presented at the 2016 National Art Education Association Conference; served as Division Chair and in other leadership roles with the Ohio Art Education Association from 2014–2016; in 2016 she also published the article “Art Integration Fosters Empathy in the Middle School Classroom”, in The Clearing House: A Journal of Educational Strategies, Issues, Ideas. Her attention and commitment to teaching is extraordinary and includes working alongside students as co-collaborators. In addition, Darden is a practicing fiber artist who has found that studying and practicing art education have helped her find her voice, both personally and professionally.

Art Ball celebrates its 60th anniversary on Saturday, June 10! This black-tie gala, presented

by Morgan Stanley, is the culmination of many months of hard work by The DAI’s Associate Board and is one of the museum’s premier fundraisers.

This year’s Art Ball theme is Masterpiece: Celebrating 60 Years of Art Ball, and chairs Britt and Andy Platt have selected Arthur Wesley Dow’s Lavender and Green (1912) as the featured artwork.

“We are honored to chair this year, especially celebrating Art Ball’s 60th anniversary!” said Britt and Andy. “The DAI team and the Associate Board have been enthusiastically working all year to make this year’s event the best yet. It will be a night you don’t want to miss!”

UPCOMING EVENTS ONE SWEET EVENT AT THE MUSEUM STORE The Museum Store’s annual One Sweet Event, a three-day shopping extravaganza, takes place May 5–7. It’s the perfect time to find that unique Mother’s Day gift!

LEO BISTRO THEMED DINNERS Leo Bistro will host a new series of themed dinners on select Thursdays!

First up is a classic clambake on July 27 with all the trimmings—clams, mussels, lobster, sausage, corn, and potatoes, seasoned with Old Bay and Fresh Lemons.

Join us in the Hale Cloister as Leo Bistro fires up the grill, layering fresh seaweed and the seafood over fire to simulate the wonderful sea-soaked flavor, without the hassle of lugging everything to the beach and digging a fire pit!

REIMAGINING WORKS PARTNERSHIP CONTINUES The Dayton Metro Library’s ReImagining Works partnership with The Dayton Art Institute continues with the recent unveiling of artwork at the Miamisburg branch, as well as a preview of the new Main Library in downtown Dayton.

For the Miamisburg Branch Library, two DAI pieces served as inspiration: the bronze sculpture Huck Finn by Robert Koepnick, and Endless Energy for Limitless Living by Rockwell Kent. Four new art installations are permanently featured in the Miamisburg Branch Library: Miamisburg Mandala by Amy Kollar Anderson, Dream Chasers by Darren Haper, From the River to the Stars by Mychaelyn Michalec, and Great Miami School by Susan Byrnes.

In addition, community voting is open through the end of May to select inspirational pieces from The DAI’s collection for the Wilmington-Stroop Branch Library. IRV & TRACY BIESER Irv joined The DAI Associate Board in 1974, and Tracy followed when they married in 1976. They truly enjoyed this experience – working on Oktoberfest and co-chairing the Art Ball in 1980. They both treasure the friendships established at that time and many of these continue 40 years later! Over the years, they have both served on the Board of Trustees, with Tracy currently serving on the Board and chairing the Collections Committee.

While on the Board in the ‘80s, Irv played a pivotal role in securing the purchase of the Ponderosa collection.

“We were both brought up feeling that the arts are very important, and it’s essential to be exposed to them at an early age,” Tracy said. “The Dayton Art Institute with its excellent educational programs is certainly a leader for this in the greater Dayton community”.

The Bieser’s planned gift to the Carnell Circle came about through the museum’s Renaissance Campaign in the 1990s. The entire family came together to make a gift that helped create the Bieser Family Gallery of Late 19th Century French Art (Gallery 212) in the Berry Wing of European Art. “It’s important to make these gifts when you are doing your estate planning, and to let the organizations know about your planned gifts,” Tracy emphasized. “It’s important to know that support will be there down the road.”

“Every planned gift is magnified in so many ways— people come to understand what these gifts can accomplish in the future. It’s about leaving a legacy to the community that will benefit so many generations for years to come”, Irv said.

For Irv and Tracy Bieser, their support and love of The Dayton Art Institute spans multiple generations. Irv’s grandparents were active with the museum during the late 1920s and 1930s, and his parents continued that support during the tenure of Director Tom Colt in the 1950s and 1960s. Irv’s father served on the museum’s board of trustees, and his parents also donated or assisted in the purchase of several pieces of art for The DAI’s collection.

“At the DAI, children and adults get exposure to a broad range of art, to see what it is all about – they experience the excitement of history in some of the pieces and learn that a painting doesn’t have to literally portray something, but can abstractly portray emotion,” Irv added.

“Museums like The DAI are called on to do more educating today, than ever before.”

“Every time I walk through the galleries, I just love this museum,” Tracy stated. “We want everyone to feel that way and have both a pride and a sense of ownership in The DAI.”

BLUE STAR MUSEUMS PROGRAM OFFERS MILITARY DISCOUNTS

During the program, The DAI will waive its suggested admission fee and offer free general admission to the permanent collection for all active-duty military personnel and their families, as well as discounted admission to the special exhibition Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and the Art of Independence. In addition, active duty military personnel and their families can receive a $10 discount on the purchase of a new museum membership or membership renewal.

The Dayton Art Institute will once again participate in the annual Blue Star Museums Program, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2017.

2016 COMMUNITY REPORT AVAILABLE ONLINE More than 114,600 people visited The Dayton Art Institute in 2016, as we began to implement our Centennial Master Plan, making many renovations and improvements to our historic museum building. Art Ball and Oktoberfest both enjoyed recordbreaking years, while our curatorial team secured funding for several key conservation projects, as well as the reframing of an important Dutch painting, and the acquisition of an

18th-century George Romney painting.

The DAI ended 2016 with a balanced operating budget and also had an economic impact of more than $6.7 million on the region.
