Weisman grew up in a family of collectors. His mother, Marcia, was one of the founders of the Museum of Contemporary Art, known as MOCA, in Los Angeles. His uncle, Norton Simon, was among the earliest collectors of impressionist work, who built the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena. Richard’s own sensitivity to forming a top-notch collection of modern and contemporary art was thus finely crafted through years of development, and his collection is a reflection of his passion and insight. He also has had fun along the way befriending many artists. His former New York apartment was the epicenter for the likes of Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Barnett Newman, Robert Rauschenberg, Clyfford Still, George Segal, Jonn de Andrea, Arman, Basquiat, Keith Haring, Botero and Willem de Kooning. Weisman’s catalogue, Picasso to Pop: The Richard Weisman Collection, chronicles his collection from the earliest works he purchased in the 1960s – a surrealist work by the Chilean artist Matta entitled Early Urge, and Roy Lichtenstein’s Blond Waiting – to the 1970s and 1980s when he commissioned his friend Andy Warhol to paint what would become the Athlete Series, featured in the exhibition opening June 22. I SEE THE RHYTHM — NEW EXPERIENCENTER EXHIBITION TO OPEN ON MAY 4 The Experiencenter’s new exhibition, I See the Rhythm, explores the creative space where music and art overlap. The artistic urge to merge the language of visual art with musical notation, composition and sound is particularly pertinent to 20th-century artists and especially important today, as artists frequently and freely cross disciplines to create works that are visually and aurally captivating. I See the Rhythm opens Saturday, May 4 with an interactive sound sculpture, Delirioso by Anthony Luensman, a 20-foot work installed in the gallery along with a display of several 20th-century works of art from the museum’s collection and musical instruments from around the globe. Hands-on gallery activities will explore visual and musical composition, movement, art creation, dramatic play, and storytelling. A prepared piano will invite visitors to use clips and clothespins to “prepare” a baby grand piano and play improvised compositions. Activities will highlight the connections between art and music, and traditional instruments will reveal their sounds and stories. For our smallest visitors, The Art Place for Young Learners will present art, song, rhyme and pattern through the lens of classic nursery rhymes, which represent some of our first experiences with rhythm. The sound installation Delirioso, created by Luensman specifically for the Experiencenter, takes advantage of a large curved wall to create an “amphitheater” for sound. This amphitheater will be filled with an eclectic orchestra of kinetic and electronic instruments that guests may play and conduct, through a series of joystick movements and pushbutton switches. Delirioso’s range of unusual sounds, textures and combinations call to mind avant-garde jazz groups like the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Similar to the Art Ensemble, Delirioso swings from quiet, atmospheric passages to dense walls of sound, depending on how many players are participating and how many instruments are activated.
An accomplished multimedia artist, Luensman has exhibited nationally and internationally. In 2007, he was invited to create Arenas for the Cincinnati Art Museum, a series of sculptures and installations throughout the museum. His recent 2012 solo show at the Weston Art Gallery in the Aronoff Center for the Arts won support from the National Endowment for the Arts and incorporated thought-provoking sculpture, photography, sound and video. Luensman is the recipient of several awards, including two Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Awards, three City of Cincinnati Individual Artist Grants and the prestigious Efroymson Contemporary Arts Fellowship.
The Experiencenter will feature new work and activities throughout the year that continue the exploration of art and music. In September, Dayton artist Michael Bashaw will install Sonic Interplay a large-scale interactive sound sculpture, and Sanford Biggers’ interactive hip-hop dance floor and video returns in December! Since 1976, The Experiencenter has been providing visitors with participatory experiences that are creative, stimulating and serve to deepen knowledge about the myriad forms of art and the wonder of the creative process.

ANIMAL FARM
APRIL 25 - MAY 11, 2014 Zoot takes on this immense and still timely political drama written by George Orwell. In this drama, the animals on a farm drive out their master and take over and run the farm for themselves. The experiment is successful, except that someone has to take the deposed farmer’s place. Leadership falls upon the pigs, which may be clever, but don’t have character equal to their intelligence. Do not miss this American literary classic! Recommended for all ages. A study guide will be available.
