Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and the Art of Independence Exhibition Brochure

UBUHLE WOMEN Beadwork and the Art of Independence June 24–September 10, 2017 Dazzling beadwork from South Africa will be on display at The Dayton Art Institute this summer in this stunning special exhibition! Ubuhle means “beauty” in the Xhosa and Zulu languages, and it describes the shimmering quality of light on glass that for the Xhosa people has a particular spiritual significance. Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and the Art of Independence showcases a new form of bead art, the ndwango (“cloth”), developed by a community of women living and working together in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The Ubuhle artists’ community was established in 1999 to empower local women with the means to provide for their families through their art. Using skills handed down through generations, and working in their own unique style, the women create both figurative and abstract subjects for their ndwangos. The Dayton Art Institute will be the first venue for this new touring exhibition, developed by the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum, in cooperation with Curators Bev Gibson, Ubuhle Beads and James Green, and organized for tour by International Arts & Artists. Visit daytonartinstitute.org/ubuhle for more information and look for the hashtag #UbuhleWomen on social media.
