PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
These are great times for Music Education in California! With the passage of Proposition 28 and the Governor’s budget revision, band programs in California are seeing more funding and support than we have seen in decades. I hope
you all have had the opportunity to work with your business offices and district administration to create a plan on how to best enhance your programs. I am excited to see the new levels our state will grow to with this new foundation of support.
The board of the California Band Directors Association has been working diligently with our partner organizations to plan a wonderful conference in February 2023. Ryan Dirlam, Joseph Cargill, Danielle Cavazos, and Yasmine Brackens, along with their teams, have been putting in countless hours choosing clinicians, organizing hotels, socials, and All-State schedules. I would like to personally thank them for their dedication and support of our California Band Directors.
We are beyond excited to debut our newest Social Impact Consortium pieces with the High School Wind Symphony. “I Am Enough,” composed by Marie Douglas, is a wonderful two-movement piece that focuses on the struggles of mental health and anxiety. Kaitlin Bove joined the board as our new Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility Representative. She has done a phenomenal job in growing this consortium project and I am thrilled to watch it grow and continue to commission great composers writing purposeful music with curriculum to guide discussions in our band rooms. You won’t want to miss the roundtable discussion with the composers and members of the curriculum committee during the Saturday Sessions at CASMEC. We are also very pleased to present our new All-State High School Golden State Honor Band. This band is going to join our other High School All-State groups on the Sunday Morning Concert, under the direction of Dr. Peter Boonshaft. This group is primarily composed of students who come from either a small school (under 1500) or a title one school (as determined by California Standards). These students went through the same audition process and met a minimum All-State standard to achieve membership in this ensemble. We are excited to welcome our fourth All-State group this year, as we received a record number of auditions in nearly every section. If you are interested in serving on the All-State Golden State Honor Band Committee to help shape this group as we move forward, please sign up here.
I am excited to see many of you next month at CASMEC. I hope you are able to come and grow as an educator, and network with other great band directors in our state. I encourage you to continue to support one another in your schools, districts, and areas. We are stronger together! Remember that everything you do matters, and you are making a difference in students’ lives every day by providing them with worthwhile experiences and education. As always, we are excited to welcome our membership back to CASMEC and to offer as much high quality professional development as possible. We have put together a phenomenal collection of world class educators and incredibly talented performers that we hope will inspire each member and provide them more tools and tricks to take back to their band rooms.
Of the many offerings you will find at CASMEC this year, we hope membership will find these sessions helpful and inspiring. As you design and revamp your curriculum for the year, please join us for two sessions, “Habits of a Significant Band Director,” and “Creating Habits of Success in a Young Band,” presented by Scott Rush, band director, music administrator and author of the wonderful Habits of a Successful Band Director series. You are sure to receive a wealth of information from Mr. Rush. If that isn’t enough to get you excited, we are also very excited to once again welcome composer and band director Robert Sheldon back to CASMEC where he will present FOUR SESSIONS across the weekend! Make sure to make time in your schedule to be at “FIX IT NOW!: Developing Ensemble Skills for Effective Rehearsals and Successful Performance,” “The Small-School Band,” “To Music and Beyond!” and “Preparing Your Ensemble for Expressive Performance.”
We also hope that you will join our instrument pedagogyspecific presentations. These are just a small bit of what CBDA is offering to our members this year. Please join us for presentations on topics including score study, retention and recruitment, flex arrangements for band and much more. As always, we will host the CBDA Directors reading band in conjunction with JW Pepper where you will be able to pick up your instruments and read through some of the best literature available to you to order that very day and begin with your students.
We hope you will join us throughout the week to hear amazing performances by the CBDA guest performing ensembles. This year we are proud to feature The San Francisco Brass Band, conducted by Dr. Craig Mckenzie, The Cal State Fullerton Wind Symphony led by Dr. Dustin Barr, the Amador Valley Wind Ensemble I conducted by Jonathan Grantham, and the South Pointe Middle School Wind Ensemble led by Susan Willmering.

Conductor Bio
Gary P. Gilroy is a Professor of Music and Director of Bands at California State University, Fresno. In 1993 he was appointed Associate Director of Bands and Director of the Bulldog Marching Band. After 13 years in this position and building one of the finest collegiate marching bands on the west coast, Dr. Gilroy became Director of Bands in 2006. Prior to this appointment he served for a decade as Director of Bands at Fred C. Beyer High School in Modesto, California, where his band was awarded several national honors as well as the International Sudler Shield Award from the John Philip Sousa Foundation. Gilroy also served as faculty at CSU, Stanislaus and graduate assistant at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon, where he completed his doctorate in 1995.
In March of 2014 Dr. Gilroy was voted into the membership of the prestigious American Bandmasters Association. He served on the board of California Band Directors Association for 14 years and he is a Past President of that organization. In 2009 Dr. Gilroy was given the Distinguished Service Award and in 2015 the Don Schmeer Friend of Music award from CBDA. Gilroy is also a Past President of the Fresno Madera Counties Music Educators Association. In 2016 Dr. Gilroy was again honored with the CMEA John Swain/College/University Educator award from the California Music Educators Association. From 1999 to 2006 he served on the board of the National Band Association as a Member At Large and the Western Division Chairman.
In 2017 Dr. Gilroy was a co-founder of the Wind Symphony of Clovis, a group of semi-professional musicians from California. After being in existence for less than a year, the band was accepted to perform at the 72nd Annual Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois. Their December, 2018 performance earned them an immediate standing ovation at the conclusion of the concert.
Dr. Gilroy is in demand as a guest conductor of many honor bands throughout the United States. As an adjudicator and guest conductor he has served in 40 states, Canada, China and England. Dr. Gilroy has been the conductor for all-state groups in Colorado, Iowa and Oregon as well as the All-Northwest Wind Symphony, the California Band Directors Association All-State Junior High School Symphonic Band and the All-State High School Symphonic Band.
An ASCAP Award-winning composer with more than 200 publications to his name, Gilroy’s music is published for concert band, marching band, and various ensembles through
the Arrangers Publishing Company, BRS Music, Inc., C. Alan Publications, Daehn Publications, Gary P. Gilroy Publications, Kagarice Brass Editions, Matrix Publications, TRN Publications, Warner Brothers, Wingert-Jones, Inc., TrevCo Music Publishing and CPP/Belwin Mills. His compositions have been featured at the American Bandmasters Association Convention, the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis, the Eastern Trombone Workshop in Washington, DC, the International Trombone Festival in New Orleans, and on many occasions at the International Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. Additionally, Gilroy’s compositions have been performed by many regional and state honor bands throughout the United States. Dr. Gilroy served as the arranger/composer for the 2008 Olympic Orchestra in Beijing, China. He has been an ASCAP Composers Award recipient every year since 2001.
Dr. Gilroy and his wife Dena have lived in Clovis, California, since 1993. His daughter, Alexandra, has music degrees from UCLA and UNLV and is currently a music teacher in the Clovis (CA) Unified School District, and his son, Nicholas, is a graduate of CSU, Long Beach and a music teacher and freelance percussionist who makes his living as the Cellar Master at Ficklin Vineyards in Madera, California.

Dr. Roby George North Broward Preparatory SchoolConductor Bio
Dr. Roby G. George is Director of Instrumental Music at the North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek, Florida, where he is principal conductor of the Wind Ensemble and the Symphony Orchestra. He has served as Director of Bands at Indiana State University, University of Illinois (Associate), University of Dayton, Fisk University, and at the prestigious New World School of the Arts in Miami. With degrees in Music Education from Florida State University (BME and MME), he received his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, with a cognate degree in woodwind performance.
Over the years, George has distinguished himself as a versatile conductor with his ensembles having performed at the MidWest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, the Banff International Music Festival in Canada, various conducting clinics in Mexico, Costa Rica, China, Germany, France, and throughout the United States. He has also served as the principal clinician at numerous band festivals across the country and established the Regali Chamber Winds and Wind Quintet.
With critical performances at such notable venues as Symphony Center in Chicago, Hill Auditorium on the campus of the University of Michigan, and Carnegie Hall, George now serves as the Interim Conductor of the Miami Wind Symphony, a standing guest conductor of the Greater Miami Symphonic Band and is a coconductor of the Pinnacle Winds in Kansas City. He is a member of the Florida Music Educators Association and formerly a member of the College Band Directors National Association where he served as chairman of the Diversity Committee for 9 years.

Dr. Elizabeth Peterson Conductor, Consultant, ClinicianConductor Bio
Dr. Elizabeth Peterson recently retired from her position as clinical professor of music, and associate director of bands, University of Illinois School of Music where she joined the faculty in 2015. Dr. Peterson conducted the Illinois Wind Orchestra, served as the placement coordinator for student teachers and taught several courses in instrumental conducting. Prior to her appointment at the University of Illinois, Peterson was a tenured professor of music education at the Ithaca College School of Music. During the seventeen years she spent at Ithaca College, Peterson conducted numerous ensembles including the Symphonic Band, Brass Choir and All-Campus Band. She taught courses in conducting, undergraduate and graduate courses in music education, and supervised student teachers. Peterson was the coconductor of the Ithaca Concert Band, an adult community band, for 15 years.
Dr. Peterson is active as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and school music consultant in the United States and Canada. She presents clinics at the local, state and national levels in the field of music education. Peterson’s two books, The Music Teacher’s First Year: Tales of Challenge, Joy and Triumph, and The Music Teacher’s Later Years: Reflection with Wisdom, are both published by Meredith Music.
Dr. Peterson received a Bachelor of Music Education and Bachelor of Literature, Science and Arts degree from the University of Michigan where she studied trumpet with Armando Ghitalla. She received a Master of Music in Music Education and Trumpet Performance from Northwestern University, where she studied trumpet with Vincent Cichowicz, and performed in the North Shore Community Band under the direction of John P. Paynter. She earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in Music Education from Shenandoah Conservatory.
Prior to her appointment at Ithaca College, Peterson was an arts administrator and director of bands in the public schools of Ohio and Illinois. Dr. Peterson holds a number of professional memberships including the College Band Directors National Association and the National Band Association. Peterson is a member the American Bandmasters Association and the Midwest Clinic Board of Directors.

Conductor Bio
Called one of the most exciting and exhilarating voices in music education today, Peter Loel Boonshaft has been invited to speak and conduct in every state in the nation and around the world. Honored by the National Association for Music Education and Music For All as the first recipient of the “George M. Parks Award for Leadership in Music Education,” Dr. Boonshaft is Director of Education for Jupiter Band Instruments. Dr. Boonshaft is the author of the critically acclaimed bestselling books Teaching Music with Passion, Teaching Music with Purpose, and Teaching Music with Promise, as well as his first book for teachers of other disciplines, Teaching with Passion, Purpose and Promise. He is also co-author of Alfred Music Publishing’s method book series Sound Innovations. As well, his weekly “Boonshaft’s Blog” for music educators continues to inspire teachers everywhere. He has received official proclamations from the Governors of five states and a Certificate of Appreciation from former President Ronald Reagan, as well as performing for former President and Mrs. George H. W. Bush, former President Bill Clinton, and for Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He has been awarded membership in Pi Kappa Lambda and Alpha Chi, as well as twice receiving the University of Hartford Regent’s Award and that University’s Outstanding Music Educator Award. His honors also include being selected three times as a National Endowment for the Arts “Artist in Residence,” three times awarded Honorary Life Membership in the Tri-M Music Honor Society, receiving the Al G. Wright Award of Distinction from the Women Band Directors International, and being selected for the Center for Scholarly Research and Academic Excellence at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY, where he is Professor Emeritus of Music.
Extremely active as a guest conductor, clinician and speaker for conferences, festivals, concerts and workshops nationally and internationally, he has guest conducted the NAfME (The National Association for Music Education) National High School Honors Band, NAfME All-Eastern Band, NAfME All-Northwest Band, NAfME All-Eastern Directors Band, Goldman Memorial Band, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Pacific Band, U.S. Marine Band New Orleans, Western International Band Clinic, Prague Castle Guard/Czech Police Symphonic Band, U.S. Department of Defense Dependents Schools: Europe Honors Music Fest Band, and the Association of Concert Bands National Conference Band. Conductor Bio
Dr. David Vickerman, 2015 winner of The American Prize in Conducting, is an Associate Professor of Music and the Director of Bands at San José State University. In addition to conducting the Wind Ensemble and the new music ensemble “Disrupt,” he teaches undergraduate and graduate instrumental conducting. Under his artistic leadership, the SJSU Wind Ensemble was selected to perform at the California All-State Music Education Conference (CASMEC) in 2020 and the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) Western/Northwestern Division Conference in 2022. Prior to his appointment at San José State University, he was the Director of Bands at The College of New Jersey where he established the Wind Ensemble as a regional model for performance excellence through invitations to the CBDNA and National Association for Music Education (NAfME) Eastern Division Conferences. Before joining The College of New Jersey, he held the position of Director of Bands on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus where he conducted the Wind Ensemble and directed the Pep Band. In addition to his duties at SJSU, he has served as the Associate Conductor of Great Noise Ensemble, in Washington, D.C., and he is a highly sought-after guest conductor, having conducted numerous honor bands across the country.
A fervent advocate for contemporary music, Dr. Vickerman has commissioned works by eminent composers and conducted many world premieres with The San José State University Wind Ensemble, The College of New Jersey Wind Ensemble and Great Noise Ensemble. He has also arranged several pieces for winds including Concerto for Saxophone Quartet and Wind Ensemble by Philip Glass (published through WiseMusic Classical), Ára Batur by the Icelandic rock band, Sigur Rós, Observer in the Magellanic Cloud by Mason Bates and Craigslistlieder by Gabriel Kahane. In the fall of 2013, Dr. Vickerman conducted the premiere of the “Sgt. Pepper Project” with Great Noise Ensemble. This concert consisted of thirteen premieres, each based off of a track from the famous Beatles album. For a concert event entitled “Digital Embrace” at the Peabody Institute, he conducted a concert of wind band music that focused on the use of integrated live electronics. His primary conducting instructors include Dr. Edward C. Harris, Dr. Stuart Sims, Robert Ponto and Dr. Harlan Parker.
Dr. Vickerman regularly presents at regional, national and international conferences on topics ranging from teaching social justice issues in band and embracing vulnerability in rehearsal and performance to the development of a computer-based conducting analysis system to assist beginning conducting students. His coauthored paper with Dr. Andrea Salgian, “Computer-Based Tutoring for Conducting Students,” was presented at the International Computer Music Conference in Utrecht, Netherlands, in September 2016. He also presented “Improve Band Performance with Socially-Conscious Repertoire,” along with Dr. Colleen Sears, at the National Association for Music Education Eastern Division Conference in 2017 and at the Midwest Clinic in 2018.
Dr. Vickerman graduated from the Peabody Institute with a DMA in Wind Conducting in 2014 and a Master’s Degree in Wind Conducting from the University of Oregon in 2010. Prior to his work at the University of Oregon, he taught high school in California for 6 years after receiving a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education and teaching credential from California State University Stanislaus in 2002.

Dr. Mary Land is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Instrumental Music Education at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She conducts the University Concert Band and teaches courses in instrumental music education. Prior to this position, she was Director of Bands and Instrumental Music Education at Young Harris College in Young Harris, Georgia. Before moving to higher education, Dr. Land was a public school band director in Georgia for over 25 years where she developed an outstanding band program in Pickens County, Georgia. Bands under Mary Land’s direction have received invitations to perform at numerous music conferences and clinics.
Dr. Land earned her Educational Doctorate (Ed.D) from the University of Georgia, her Master of Music Education degree from Vandercook College of Music in Chicago, Illinois, and her Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Georgia. She has served as the President of the Georgia Music Educators Association and the state of Georgia’s CNAfME chair. In Michigan, Dr. Land has served as the National Band Association state chair and the Michigan Music Education Association’s CNAfME chair. Dr. Land serves on the Board of Directors for the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic and is a member of the Zeta Chapter of Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity.
Dr. Land is also on the faculty of the prestigious Interlochen Arts Camp as the conductor of the Intermediate Wind Symphony. Dr. Land is an active adjudicator, conductor, and clinician throughout the United States and serves as a clinician for the Conn-Selmer Division of Education. Her professional affiliations include: MSBOA, NAfME, IAJE, CBDNA, Pi Kappa Lambda American Honor Society (for students and professors of music), and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Professional Teacher Association. Dr. Land is also a member of the National Band Association (NBA) and has served as a national representative on the NBA Executive Board of Directors.
Many professional awards and recognitions have been presented to Dr. Land during her career. She was recently awarded The Distinguished Alumni Award from the Vandercook College of Music. Many issues of The Instrumentalist magazine have featured Dr. Land, discussing her teaching techniques, her band program in
the public schools, and her band program at Young Harris College. She has been presented the National Band Association Citation of Excellence on 12 separate occasions and has been presented the Women Band Directors International Scroll of Excellence five times. Dr. Land was awarded the GMEA Music Educator of the Year Award in 2012 and was presented with the John Philip Sousa Foundation Legion of Honor Award at the 2012 Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic for her contributions to music education. Mary Land was selected by the national publication School Band and Orchestra in their December 2013 issue as one of “50 Directors Who Make a Difference.” Dr. Land’s band program at Pickens County Middle School (PCMS) was the recipient of the Georgia Senate Resolution 212 commending its success. Additionally, under her direction, the PCMS Band was the recipient of the Magna Cum Laude Award, a prestigious international award for middle school bands.
Dr. Land is the co-author of the newly published GIA instrumental music education textbook, Habits of a Successful Music Education Student. She is also published in the National Band Association Journal, The Instrumentalist, Teaching Music (NAfME), the School Band and Orchestra Magazine, and the GIA series Teaching Music Through Performance in Band. Commissioning projects include works by Sam Hazo, Bill Locklear, Barry Kopetz, and Christopher Tucker.
