25 YEARS OF COMMUNITY PHILANTHROPY Greetings! And welcome to this very special edition of our Report to the Community publication. We are excited to share a few highlights of the 25-year history of the DeKalb County Community Foundation. From the very beginning, our mission at the DeKalb County Community Foundation has always been the same: To enhance the quality of life in DeKalb County by proactively addressing the needs of the community, and distributing philanthropic resources in the most effective ways possible. It is wonderful and inspirational to see how far we’ve come – due to the overwhelming generosity of those who love DeKalb County and care about its future – over the past 25 years. Celebrate with us, a quarter century journey, from an initial contribution by founders Charlie and Mary Roberts, who would be in awe today of the countless lives impacted in our community. We are grateful to the hundreds of people who have partnered with the Community Foundation over the years to fulfill their philanthropic goals and support the quality of life throughout DeKalb County by providing resources to help our Board respond to needs and opportunities. The theme for our 25th anniversary year is ‘Celebrate. Thank. Give.’ We hope that as you read the highlights enclosed, you will agree that we have accomplished our goal to honor the past, celebrate well, and build momentum for an even more exciting next 25 years of community philanthropy! We also want to thank our Annual Sponsors (listed on page 6) for helping us celebrate.
Dan Templin, Executive Director
As you might imagine, it has been a challenge to fit so much philanthropic activity into just 8 pages! Our apologies go out to those many people and organizations who are part of the Community Foundation’s story, but are not mentioned in this publication….their influence exists far beyond these pages. The Community Foundation is, in part, about connecting people who care with causes they care about in the community. As you read through this publication and connect with our mission, be sure to let us know how we may help you with your philanthropic dreams!

FOUNDERS MARY AND CHARLIE ROBERTS
Twenty five years ago, Charlie and Mary Roberts had already made their mark on community philanthropy in DeKalb County. The local couple, primarily known because of their DeKalb Ag background, extensively shared their time, talent, and treasure. It was no surprise when their research to enhance this spirit of caring led them to learn that community foundations were sprouting up across the country. Why not a community foundation in DeKalb County? The couple asked local attorney Ron Klein to assist in gauging interest from civic and business leaders. In March 1993, Klein secured the required government approval and with an initial gift of $3.6 million from Charlie and Mary Roberts, the DeKalb County Community Foundation began.
RON KLEIN
Ron Klein served as president of the first 21-member Board of Directors. The first Board was comprised of leaders from all corners of the county to help grow capital and visibility. Seeing a need for additional leadership in the organization, the newly formed Board of Directors recruited and hired Dick Ubl as the Foundation’s first Executive Director. Ubl served in this role until 1999.
DURING THAT FIRST YEAR, $150,000 IN GRANTS WERE DISTRIBUTED AND TOTAL ASSETS OF THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION SURPASSED $4 MILLION.
DICK UBL
The original Community Foundation logo, created by Jeanmarie De Vale, represents the integration of home, business, and agriculture in DeKalb County. The stalks of corn have their roots in the Roberts family tie to the DeKalb Ag and their love for community. In 2012, the logo evolved to encompass the Foundation’s move to its permanent home in the Sycamore Train Depot.

JERRY SMITH
The Community Foundation joined similar foundations nationwide in adopting a four-word slogan describing what community foundations are all about. for good. for ever.

The Community Foundation received a major gift from the children of founders Charlie and Mary Roberts. The three siblings, Doug Roberts, John Roberts, and Virginia Roberts Holt GENEROUSLY PLEDGED A $2.5 MILLION GIFT, providing a much-needed boost to the Foundation.
Embracing the desire to teach youth about philanthropy and grantmaking in the community, the Community Foundation formed a youth advisory committee, later renamed to Youth Engaged in Philanthropy (YEP).

REACHED AN ALL-TIME RECORD OF $1 MILLION. “Thanks
a Million” became the overarching theme of 2006.
2008
Another major change came to the Community Foundation’s leadership as Jerry Smith announced his retirement. After an open search, the Foundation hired from within and welcomed Dan Templin as the new Executive Director. DAN TEMPLIN
After spending much of 2011 planning with community partners, the Community Foundation Board formalized its commitment to local nonprofit capacity building to help launch and coordinate the DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership (DCNP).
2012
CONTINUED
Following a large-scale renovation project, the Community Foundation took ownership of the historic Sycamore Train Depot and moved into its permanent home.
2015
The response to a tornado that struck Fairdale and surrounding communities in DeKalb County on April 9, 2014 was tremendous. As the relief phase transitioned to a recovery phase, the Kishwaukee United Way and the DeKalb County Community Foundation partnered to establish the DeKalb County Disaster Recovery Fund. This pass through fund accepted taxdeductible donations used to support mid to long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts. In total, support raised for recovery efforts reached over $1 million.
2016 The Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation converted its operations to a donor advised fund within the Community Foundation. The Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation Fund’s creation constituted a 15% increase in the Community Foundation’s total assets and added about 25% to its annual grant and fund distribution total.
To aid in shaping economic development in the county, the Community Foundation created the Community Economic Development Grants program to act as a catalyst for each municipality to create its own unique economic development plan and implementation projects.
FARNY R. WURLITZER
2014
On May 6, 2014, the Community Foundation and DCNP partnered to raise support for local nonprofits and grow philanthropy in the community through a 24-hour online day of giving. This was the first organized giving day for DeKalb County and raised a total of $119,443 from supporters of DeKalb County nonprofits.
