2013 Peace Country Bull Sales •
History of the Dawson Creek
All Breed Bull Sale by Patsy Nagel The Dawson Creek Bull Sale had its beginning in March of 1974. Some of the many purebred breeders in the area thought it time that Dawson Creek entered the business of selling their bulls to local producers. This sale, which began as a show and sale, is still going today with much the same rules and regulations as it introduced 40 years ago. It is believed to be the longest running bull sale in northern BC and Alberta. Its reputation as an all breeds sale continues to this day, as any producer is welcome to enter their purebred bulls, regardless of breed. The original group of forward looking producers was led by Sam Wilson as president, Bernie Aylward as secretary treasurer and Dale Aylward, Oscar Arndt, Charlie Beck, Ray Bohn, Russel Burton, Lloyd Gibbons, Gordon McRann and David Nelson as directors. The committee has always obtained outside judges for the event with Earnest Houghton (Judge Kamloops, BC) and Frank Overton (Selector - Williams Lake, BC) being the officials for the initial Dawson Creek Bull Sale in 1974. Angus, Charolais, Hereford, and Shorthorn bulls made up the 33 bulls on offer at the first bull sale in 1974. All arrived the day before the sale for weighing and checking. The first Bull Show and Sale was held at the Centennial Pavillion on the Exhibition Grounds with the sale taking place at Patterson’s Auction Market. The first auctioneer was Miller Patterson, assisted by his sons, Art and Leonard. Today the sale is held at the Vold Jones & Vold (VJV) Auction Mart facilities in Dawson Creek. VJV also supply the auctioneers for today’s event. In the first Angus Division, the Grand Champion bull was the Alyward’s Gumbo Gulch Bardoliermere 4D, weighing in at 1585 pounds as a two year old. It is interesting to note that, these days, many yearlings weigh that much, or more! The Reserve Champion was entered by Steve Toftland of Valhalla Centre in Alberta. Charles and Mabel Beck from Worsley in Alberta also entered Angus bulls that year. Only two Charolais bulls were entered at the first bull sale and came from the Bud Laveck ranch in Groundbirch, B.C. These two yearlings, weighing about 900 pounds each, sold for $925 and $975 each; good prices for yearlings at the time. Pat and Leonard Friedel from Ring Creek Farms in Fairview, Alberta led out the Angus Champion, Ring Creek King 11D. This bull weighed 1,600 pounds and was sold to Ollie Odden for $2,050; the highest price paid for a bull at the sale. Ruben Johnson from La Glace, Alberta had the Reserve Champion with SKT W Britisher M 8D. Other Hereford contributors at the first sale were, K.L. Foster (Fort St. John, BC), Mervin W. Hiebert, (Rose Prairie, BC), Henry Nagel (Pouce Coupe, BC), George Slette (La Glace, AB) and W.H. Tompson (Rose Prairie, BC). Several Shorthorns were listed from as far away as Hixon, BC, but the only ones arriving for the sale were consigned by Gordon and Jean McRann and James Scafe, both from the Dawson Creek area. Following the sale, all producers were all invited to attend the Cattlemen’s Banquet and Social Hour which was held at the Dawson Creek Golf Club. In
later years, the banquet was moved to the Elks Hall followed by a dance that was open to the entire community. While many things have changed over the years, the Dawson Creek All Breed Bull Sale is still, basically, the same; with outside judges (now a selection committee of three cattlemen) and support from the local business people of the area. The annual Bull Sale banquet and dance enjoyed a great deal of popularity for several years, but declining interest over the years resulted in it being dropped as a sale event. And, in spite of the BSE scare in 2006 and the Grand Champion Charolais Bull shown by years of low prices that followed, the bull sale itself Chad Haddow, Briar Ridge Stock Farm in the 2006 continues to draw local and area breeders and large Dawson Creek Bull Sale. (Photo by Patsy Nagel) crowds year after year. Numbers of bulls on offer at the sale have ranged from a high of 121 in 1997 to a low of 44 in 2005, but local breeders continue to display their faith in the cattle industry by supporting the bull sale. Last year’s sale book contained 60 bulls from Angus, Charolais, Hereford and Simmental breeds with the high selling bull being a Red Angus consigned by Don and Sheri Murphy from Gemvale Stock Farm in Dawson Creek, BC. Red Gemvale Harry 51X was named Grand Champion Angus and sold for $5600; one of the highest prices ever received for a bull at the Dawson Creek Bull Sale. Congratulations to the Murphy’s. And while the names of buyers and seller continGrand Champion Hereford bull entered by ues to change with the ever evolving cattle market, Dana Bergen, Chetwynd, BC. in the 2006 Dawson Creek Bull Sale. (Photo by Patsy Nagel) some of the names seen at the first sale in 1974 are still seen today with producers like the Gordon McRann family, Don and Sheri Murphy at Gemvale Stock Farm and the Nagel family (now Chris, Randy and Chad Haddow) representing Briar Ridge Stock Farm and buyers like the Ollie Odden family of Groundbirch, BC. As with our buyers and sellers, the bull sale has also been open for change over the past fourty years. This year, the bull sale has entered the 21st century with the inclusion of an online catalogue and internet bidding. Buyers can now access the sale by using the websites of Vold Jones & Vold (http://www.vjvauction.com/Web2010/VJVDawson/VJVDawson.html) The Grand Champion Simmental bull at and Patterson Auction Mart Ltd. (http://www.patterthe 2006 Dawson Creek Bull Sale was entered sonsauction.ca/). There will also be several pens of and shown by Peter Leriger, Four L Simmentals, open commercial heifers on offer for sale following Wanham, AB. (Photo by Patsy Nagel) the bull sale. Also unchanging over the years has been the support of local businesses like Lawrence Meat Packing Ltd. and the Dawson Co-op. Their support, along with the efforts of countless volunteers and the staffs of Patterson Auction Market and Vold Jones & Vold has been critical in ensuring the continued success of the Dawson Creek All Breed Bull Sale. In 1974, the original sale committe thanked the individuals and businesses who made this first sale possible when they said “If this sale grows from this humble beginning to one of the best sales in British Columbia, it will be because of this support”. So thanks to all the sponsors over the years and thanks to Grand Champion Angus bull at the 2006 the purebred producers and the many local cattlemen Dawson Creek Bull Sale was entered by Mountain who have supported the sales for 40 years. Let’s Side Angus, Beaverlodge, AB. (Photo by Patsy hope the Dawson Creek All Breeds Bull sale will be Nagel) around for another 40 years!

I know that spring is coming when those books are passed about, I can’t hardly wait to read them, to find who’ll be leading out Those handsome bulls of every breed, hair shampooed and curled just so, Well groomed, they look so proud, their black or red or tan coats glow! I wonder what it takes to create these fashion kings. Is there a barber shop for bulls? Who pierces noses for their rings? And what shop does the manicures and polishes the horns? The pedicures are done just so - a Monarch has been born! I thought I’d ask a rancher if he could tell me how Those bovines are turned out - handsome enough to tempt a cow! He told me that the story starts nine months before the birth, The rancher must decide a sire’s genes and what they’re worth. The mother of this handsome lad must feed him really well And when he’s weaned and put on feed, his gain must ring a bell. He’s pampered, petted and receives the best of everything He’s trained to lead, to stand just so, his praises we all sing. Then as the sale is drawing near, his toes are trimmed up short, His hair is clipped and combed and then - a bath may make him snort! Next comes the big blow drier and soon it’s time to go And make that important trip to town, so he can be there for the show. Arriving in the barns could really be a shock To see so many other kings who’ll be up on the block. What a lot of snorting, prancing, and dancing around, The bulls all want to see who’s boss - they bawl and paw the ground! But they soon get settled into their stalls Bedded deep and soft with fresh yellow straw. Then people walk by, admiring each bull, And when one catches their eye, their catalogs they pull. And now the show begins - each class comes into the ring, While the judge checks each one in turn, as they proudly parade like a king. At last the decision is made, the Grand Champion is lead out, For a true monarch of the show - oh how the crowd does shout! After the show is over, the really important part starts. The bulls take their turn on the block while the auctioneers do their part. The buyers are given a chance to own one of these monarchs today. How proud they will be if they win, this game of bidding that all may play! Finally the sale is over, and each bull will be able to go To his new home and meet his harem - excitement makes his eyes glow! So don’t you agree that it’s great, that spring is here now for sure? The bull sale catalogs are out and my spring fever is cured!

Canadian Hereford Association – Percentile Brands for 2011/2012 Born Calves
23 R001440529
Averages and Percentile Breakdowns - (www.hereford.ca)
A Percentile table is used to show the relative ranking of an animal within the Hereford breed. Three broad categories are presented for comparison. Active Sires are those bulls that have sired at least 1 calf recorded in the last 2 years. Active Dams are those cows with calves in the last 2 years and provide a comparison for females in use in your cowherd. Calves are those animals born in the last 2 years and allow for comparison of yearling and 2 year old animals to the population. For animals with EPDs that fall between the published ranges, use the lower value. For example: An active Sire with a YW EPD of 87.0 would rank in the top 25% of the breed for YW
Active Sires – Averages & Percentile Breakdown. Number (Num) is the number of active sires evaluated for each trait.

Canadian Salers The Balanced Breed
Salers are considered to be one of the oldest European breeds, whose roots can be traced to 16,500-year-old cave drawings found near the town of Salers in the South Central region of France, the Auvergne, in the heart of the volcanic area of the Massif Central. The rough terrain, poor soil and harsh climate combined with the area’s isolation contributed to a genetically pure breed of cattle with bred-in range ability to thrive almost entirely on native grasses in the summer and roughage diet in winter. The Salers breed in North America has evolved into an outstanding maternal beef breed. The cattle are usually solid red or black, and are naturally horned but polled bloodlines have been developed. Salers females possess a larger than average pelvic area and calve easily to the service of larger terminal cross sires. They are excellent mothers with good milk production, are very fertile and re-breed quickly. Salers bulls are aggressive breeders and sire calves of moderate birth weight, with a strong will to live and good growth. Salers cross steers perform well in feedlots and have exceptional carcass yield and quality. These traits have made Salers the choice of many commercial cattlemen striving to maximize production without increasing management or labour. Salers are a balanced breed, which is optimum in all aspects of beef production. Salers were first imported into Canada in 1972 with the Salers Association of Canada being established in 1973. Canada continues to be an excellent source for Salers genetics worldwide.
