Patoka Reservoir the heart of region Patoka Reservoir is the second-largest man-made lake in Indiana. But in the Patoka River valley, it remains the biggest point on the map. While the region where the river ambles has seen dozens of other attractions grow up and expand since the lake’s creation in the early 1970s — and several of those attract more visitors — Patoka Reservoir remains the heart of this area’s outdoor activity, and on a grand scale. The 8,800-acre lake continues to be the focal point of Patoka’s 27,000 acres. But the recreation — fishing, swimming, skiing and such — are only byproducts. The project was developed for flood control and that area reaches into Dubois, Crawford and Orange counties. Patoka is the only lake in the state to offer floating cabins, wine cruises and rentable houseboats. The visitors center, located inside the Newton-Stewart State Recreation Area, continues to operate and several programs are planned for this summer. A weekly notice of those programs is published in The Herald. The property itself is divided into major sections, called State Recreation Areas. Here is a quick look at the major SRAs. Newton-Stewart The 4,564-acre Newton-Stewart State Recreation Area is at the center of Patoka’s summertime. Located just north of Wickliffe, it is the main recreation area on the lake. There are 455 modern campsites, a camp store, marina, hiking and bicycling trails, 18-hole disc golf course, archery course, the visitors center, a beach and expanses of wooded area to explore. All told, Patoka offers more campsites than any of the other eight state-run reservoirs in Indiana. And though the sites are full only a few times a year, they are still among the top in producing revenue for the state. Fees for Newton-Stewart activities (except camping fees and equipment rentals)
User fees Here are a few of the costs at Patoka Reservoir for residents of Indiana. ■■ Gate fee for noncommercial vehicles with Indiana license plates, every day including holidays — $5 ($40 annual pass available) ■■ Gate fee for noncommercial vehicles that do not have Indiana license plates, every day including holidays — $7 ($60 annual pass available) ■■ Golden Hoosier Passports are available for Indiana residents who are at least 65 years of age or are eligible for Social Security disability payments under 42 U.S. C. 401 for half the price of the Resident Annual Entrance Permit. ■■ Indiana residents who are former POW’s or their surviving spouses are entitled to a free Indiana Golden Hoosier Permit. ■■ Gate fee for each person, 5 years and older, entering as a pedestrian, on bicycle or horseback — $2 For updates on activities, check The Herald’s Billboard section. For updates on camping, call the reservoir at 812685-2464, or log onto http://www. in.gov/dnr/parklake/. For information on the visitors center, call 812-685-2447.
are included in the entrance fee. The Patoka Lake Visitors Center offers daily excursions and a variety of other activities. Displays of Indiana artifacts, local geological features, wildlife and plant specimens help visitors understand the natural wonders of the area. Various programs are coordinated through the center, including a regular Saturday night program in the modern campground.
A weekly schedule of events at the center is posted around the lake, and published in The Herald. Six miles of paved, isolated bicycle trails wind along through the woods around the roadways in the rec reation area. Cyclists should bring their own rides because bikes are not rented at Newton-Stewart. The South Ramp is nearest the main entrance and opens into 5-mph waters. It is the frequent choice of boaters with sailing vessels. The Newton-Stewart Boat Ramp opens unlimited-speed waters where skiing is allowed. A third ramp is located in the Fishermen’s Campground and is reserved exclusively for fishermen and campers. Lick Fork and South Lick Fork Dubois County fishermen, boaters and skiers approaching from the Jasper area will be drawn primarily to the two boat ramps in Dubois County. The South Lick Fork Ramp, located along State Road 164 about 12 miles east of Jasper, appeals to fishermen since it sits at the tip of a long zone of controlled water where the speed limit is 10 mph. The Lick Fork Ramp, located 31⁄2 miles north of the South Lick Fork Ramp, is in unlimited-speed, no-skiing waters and should be the choice of skiers and boaters seeking open water. The Lick Fork Ramp is accessible from a road leading north (State Road 545) from State Road 164 just east of the Celestine community and west of South Lick Fork Ramp. From the north, the Lick Fork Ramp can be reached by driving south from the dam and tail water area, past the Patoka Lake Water Treatment Plant. Other ramps and SRAs Several other boat ramps are located in Orange and Crawford counties. Go to www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/ for more information

ages at Santa’s Stables. Only five miles away from Santa Claus is where our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, grew up. Spencer County is where young Abe spent 14 years of his life from ages 7 to 21. Visit the fertile ground of Lincoln’s childhood home at Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial and see a replica of Lincoln’s homestead at the Living Historical Farm. Right across the street from the National Park is Lincoln State Park, established as a memorial to Abraham’s mother, Nancy Hanks. Walk the trails on the same grounds Abe walked many years ago and visit the Lincoln Bicentennial Plaza which celebrates his 200th birthday. Watch Abe’s Indiana story come to life on stage at Lincoln Amphitheatre. “A. Lincoln: A Pioneer Tale” premieres in June and is a two-act musical with an original score of 10 songs. Take a relaxing look back into history with 14 Lincoln-era replica cabins and an artifact-filled museum at the Lincoln Pioneer Village & Museum in Rockport. Stop by the Lincoln Landing where Abe launched his first flatboat trip to New Orleans, inspiring his anti-slavery views. And see the Lincoln Ferry Park that sparked Lincoln’s pursuit to become a lawyer as he was sued over his ferry business. With one of only two archabbeys in the U.S., the Saint Meinrad Archabbey is a must do on every visitor’s list. From beautiful architecture to the tranquility and peace of the grounds, the Archabbey is a great place

Nature’s beauty, variety fill Crawford County By HAROLD ALLISON For The Herald One county I always enjoy visiting when I go on a day trip is Crawford County. It offers a variety of outstanding natural areas and some very interesting historic sites. Most people pass through Crawford County on either I-64 or State Road 64 and never realize what exciting locations are to be found on either side of these roads. The village of Taswell is a good place to begin our tour of this rugged county. Located on State Road 64, Taswell is a quiet little country town. To its north are two prongs of the scenic Patoka Lake, which at 8,880 acres is Indiana’s second-largest lake. Two prongs of Patoka extend down into Crawford County, which has one boat ramp on its share of the lake. On one of these arms is the Sycamore Creek Marsh, a nice wetland area. South of Taswell, along the county road that passes under the railroad that runs through the village, is the Yellow Birch Ravine, a state nature preserve. The area is named for a few yellow birch trees that are usually found in northern regions. It is rare to find one this far south. Yellow Birch Ravine is noted for its deep valley surrounded by high hills. There are also several ravines, each with a waterfall located at its end. In one ravine is an impressive natural bridge, one of the largest in Indiana. Spring wildflowers abound at Yellow Birch, which also features hemlock and mountain laurel in addition to the yellow birch trees. Traveling on to the hamlet of Mifflin, once the site of a salt works, is a low but pretty waterfall on Otter Creek, which runs through Mifflin. Along the county road that runs east from Mifflin is a series of wetlands that have been constructed on Hoosier National Forest land. South of Mifflin is another Hoosier National Forest area. Indiana only in the area east of the village of St. Croix, and Sulphur Springs on State Road 66 is a historic mineral water location now long gone. The Stinking Fork of the Little Blue River, which enters the Little Blue at Sulphur Springs, is named for the mineral waters located near the stream. Some very outstanding natural sites are to be found in this area and are well worth exploring. State Road 66, which runs through both Crawford and Perry counties, is a very scenic road. It can provide an enjoyable road trip through this picturesque southern Indiana countryside. East of State Road 66 on county roads is the Buzzard Roost Overlook on National Forest lands. This is a scenic site above the Ohio River with a somewhat rugged hiking trail that winds down to the Ohio. Farther east on a county road is the quaint village of Alton, where the Little Blue River runs into the Ohio. A lovely waterfall once could be viewed in the Little Blue in this area, but it was covered with backwaters when the Cannelton Dam was constructed downstream on the Ohio and flooded the lower reaches of several streams in this region. From Alton, county roads run along the Ohio past Bulls Point, the Ox Bow Bend of the Ohio, Cave Sandy and Artist Point, which features a great view of the river, Fredonia, a historic site, and Leavenworth. The latter location also features a grand view of the Ohio at the Overlook Restaurant, noted for its fine food as well as its spectacular view of the Ohio. State Road 62 runs through Leavenworth, which contains both an upper and lower section and has a fascinating history, and then on to the Wyandotte Cave, Harrison- Crawford State Forest region. This area features caves, high wooded hills, several nature preserves, cliffs of limestone and scenery that is like a picture postcard. Needless to say, it is one of my favorite spots to visit and explore.

Patoka triathlon will debut in, around lake By JASON RECKER Herald Enterprise Editor When the question was posed, there was no logical answer. At some point in 2009, a friend of Dana Reckelhoff asked the then-seasonal employee at Patoka Reservoir why the grounds had never hosted a triathlon. To the friend, the place represented an ideal setting for the combination of swimming, cycling and running. Three years later, Reckelhoff was working full time for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources at the reservoir and decided to give the idea a shot. After more than a year of planning, the triathlon notion will be put in motion in the Head For The Hills Patoka Lake Triathlon on Saturday, Aug. 24. It will get off to an 8:30 a.m. start on the beach. “We have the perfect place to do it,” said Reckelhoff, an interpretive naturalist at the lake. “We have water. We have roads where there isn’t a big concern for safety. We have awesome areas to run, beautiful scenery” That’s what Drew Kinman was thinking when he moved to Jasper in 2009. The Petersburg native met Reckelhoff through work, and Kinman arrived in Jasper having recently completed in a handful of triathlons. Upon settling into his new home, Kinman, who’d relocated to Dubois County from Evansville, often saw runners and cyclists along the roads in town. He guessed the interest in exercise would have led him to a local triathlon. He found nothing. “You’d think something was in place, especially at Patoka Lake because so many people go there,” Kinman, 30, said. “I thought somebody would have said something earlier.” With its beach and plenty of room for competitors to transition from swimming to cycling and cycling to running, Kinman said Patoka Lake is a fitting host. Other state parks, including Brown County near Nashville, O’Bannon Woods in Corydon and Fort Harrison east of Indianapolis, host
Nick Waninger, a Santa Claus resident, is a professional triathlete who has completed Olympic- and Ironman-length competitions that blend swimming, cycling and running. Waninger, seen here participating in a triathlon last year in Terre Haute, plans to join the field in the first Head For The Hills Patoka Triathlon on Aug. 24. Herald file photo
various runs, walks and triathlons. Reckelhoff’s initial plan aimed for a triathlon last year, but paperwork — since the event will take place on the grounds of a state agency, there is a glut of legal matters — delayed the inaugural race until this summer. The target audience has few parameters. The format is what’s called a sprint triathlon, with shorter distances than Olympicor Ironman-length events. Head For The Hills athletes will swim 500 yards in open water, then ride their bikes along 12.8 miles of rolling roadway before completing a 3.1mile run through the woods on paved paths. The hope is that the distance, combined with the course layout and park location,
will pull both dedicated triathletes and amateurs interested in testing their mettle. The race also will feature a relay in which teams can split the workload. There will be a quarter-mile kids run as well. “We didn’t want to be extreme,” said Reckelhoff, who studied other similar events to build a knowledge background and designed the course with reservoir specialist Tom Riley. “For maybe those people who compete in triathlons, this can be a warm-up course for another event. And this can be for people who have never done one and think it’s something they can conquer.” Reckelhoff is hoping for 150 to 200 participants but has been told not to fret over early registration numbers. She’s been
pelted with inquiries but figures most folks will sign up for the event only a few weeks in advance. Given the cause, she won’t turn anyone away. Proceeds from the event will benefit the park’s raptor program, which lost its bald eagle in 2009 when the bird died during surgery. New birds are rescue projects that have suffered permanent injuries and thus often require medical attention. Reckelhoff is hoping to land a bird to join Patoka’s redtailed hawk and Eastern screech owl. “In 2009, I decided, ‘Why not?’” Reckelhoff said. “We can benefit the property and bring more people into our area. Its all been really challenging because it’s so new to us. But I like a challenge.”

Hundreds of anglers compete in summer, fall By JASON RECKER Herald Enterprise Editor In 10 minutes, Chad Brock can commute from his driveway to Lake Monroe. There, one of the state’s premier lakes awaits. But he’d rather be fishing elsewhere. A national director for the USA Bassin fishing circuit, Brock prefers to cast his lines in Patoka Reservoir, and the sentiment isn’t sedentary. This fall, the lake will host a regional USA Bassin event that will span two days and reach capacity with 356 two-person angling teams (178 teams per day). In the interim, the lake welcomes competitors in the USA Bassin Patoka Lake Division that consists of spring, summer and fall weekend events as well as a 10-week slate of Wednesday competitions. The fishermen come from all over — Dubois County, Indianapolis, Louisville, Terre Haute. “It’s our shining lake,” Brock said of Patoka. “People want to catch fish, and Patoka is hands-down the fisherman’s lake over Monroe. I cut my teeth at Monroe, but I’ll come down there and fish. There’s more things to get into as far as finding fish and really using that lake as an angler. And the overall quality of fish is better; there’s just bigger fish there.” Patoka’s waters hide the treasure underneath. Brock said he and other anglers relish the lake’s grass beds, standing timber, rock piles, fallen trees, creek channels, humps and ledges. Brock hears the fish stories regularly, thanks to a schedule that brings fishing to Patoka from late March through October. The Fish Guardian spring series began March 30 and the summer series will conclude July 20. The Hoo-Rag series will commence in late September or early October. Each of the three series comprises five tournaments. The Rod Glove weeknight circuit will begin May 22, span 10 weeks and allow folks who can’t bog down their weekends to compete on Wednesday evenings. The names of the various sponsors,
Patoka’s waters hide the treasure underneath. Anglers relish the lake’s grass beds, standing timber, rock piles, fallen trees, creek channels, humps and ledges as they search for a prized catch. Herald File photo
which include local company Port of Jasper as well as national outlets, indicate to Brock that the status of Patoka as a destination fishing spot is legit. If pedigree doesn’t hook interest, cost might. USA Bassin membership costs $25 per year and tournament entry fees start at $50. “We want to stay competitive for guys with families who don’t want to blow the bank on fishing but enjoy going out and competing and having a good time doing it,” Brock said. “There is some luster for somebody looking for a big-time tournament with a low entry fee.”
USA Bassin exists in 28 states, and lakes host their own divisions. Anglers who earn enough points qualify for the playoff system and can earn a spot in the aforementioned regional event that Patoka will host this fall. Fisherman who finish in the top 30 percent of the regional event snag a bid for the Nitro Classic on Kentucky Lake. There, the top prizes are three new boats. Those who don’t advance to the Nitro Classic can compete on Kentucky Lake in the Tracker Cup. There, the top prize is another new boat. Anglers can weigh up to five fish in each event, and Brock has seen that total climb as high as 25 pounds. Sometimes, 14 pounds
is enough to secure victory. Brock has room for up to 60 teams at the Fish Guardian and Hoo-Rag events, and he operates Facebook pages for USA Bassin to lure possible members. He works in sales and estimation for a limestone company but sometimes spends 40 hours a week working on his fishing duties. He began dabbling at Patoka five years ago, and it didn’t take long for him to climb the USA Bassin ladder or to become enamored with his new home lake. “At Patoka Lake, you just catch solid fish,” Brock said. “And we’ve really tried to keep USA Bassin where there is something for everybody.”

Reasonable fees provide outdoor opportunities The parks, lakes, forests and wildlife areas of southern Indiana offer many weekends of activities. This list tells you what’s available at what sites in Dubois and surrounding counties, followed by a list of other parks and forests a bit farther away. The information is from Indiana Department of Natural Resources publications.
Fees The fees charged by Indiana apply to all facilities listed, except for West Boggs and Hoosier National Forest. State parks and reservoirs throughout the state use the same fee schedule. Entrance fees — $5 daily fee for a noncommercial vehicle with an Indiana license plate, which admits drivers and passengers. $7 gate fee for a noncommercial vehicle that does not have Indiana license plates; admits driver and passengers. $2 daily fee for one person, 5 or older, entering as a pedestrian, on bicycle or horseback or as a passenger in a commercial vehicle (such as a school bus) that has an Indiana license plate. Those younger than 5 are admitted free. An annual entrance pass for noncommercial vehicles, driver and passengers costs $40. An annual entrance pass for non-Indiana residents costs $60. Indiana residents who are at least 65 years old or a resident eligible for Social Security can purchase a Golden Hoosier Passport for $20, which admits a noncommercial vehicle, driver and passengers. Boat launching — $5 is charged for daily boat launch at designated ramps. An annual pass costs $20, and a mooring permit is $60 annually at those sites where mooring is available. Horse trails — An annual pass costs $20 for one horse at any DNR property where horse use is allowed. A daily tag is $5. Saddle barns — Rates vary from property to property.
Camping rates Full electric (electric and water) — The regular rate is $36 Thursday through Saturday, $26 Sunday through Wednesday and $40 on holiday weekends. Electric — The regular rate is $26 Thursday through Saturday, $19 Sunday through Wednesday and $29 on holiday weekends. Nonelectric — The regular rate is $15 Thursday through Saturday, $12 Sunday through Wednesday and $18 on holiday weekends. Primitive — Primitive, backpacking and canoe campsites will be $10 a night. The rates do not include state and local taxes. The full list of rates is at http://www. in.gov/dnr/parklake/5060.htm.
Types of camp sites Four basic campground types are common to many of the area’s state parks and forests. Electric has electrical outlet, picnic table, grill, parking spur and camper pad. Modern restrooms with toilets and showers and drinking water supplies are located within the campground.
Herald File Photo
The 8,800-acre Patoka Reservoir, which serves as a water source for eight counties, helps with flood control and offers a multitude of recreational opportunities. Nonelectric campgrounds have the same facilities and sites as Type A, except no electrical outlet is supplied. Primitive sites have parking spurs, a picnic table and fire ring. Pit toilets and drinking water supplies are located within each campground. Full hookup has sewage/water/electrical hookup, picnic table, parking spur and fire ring. Modern restrooms and showers are available at each campground. A rally campsite is a field for groups that want to camp together. They vary from park to park, and the toilet facilities are pits, not flush. A canoe site is first and foremost remote and usually is close enough to the water for easy portage. It is also primitive with a fire ring, usually a picnic table. But no water or toilets. Youth tents are for groups of 10 or more campers. They all must be younger than 21 with adult supervision. That is tent camping only, which means there can be no recreational vehicles in the area. The toilets are pits. Anyone using the youth tent sites should advise the property manager in advance.
also included in the guide. The Indiana DNR guide is available at www.state.in.us/dnr Ferdinand State Forest — The forest offers primitive camping. Ferdinand Forest is on State Road 264, east of State Road 162 in Dubois County. The forest offers 69 primitive sites in two campgrounds. The rugged, hilly landscape is great for hiking as well. Golf courses team up to attract events to area By JASON RECKER Herald Enterprise Editor The footprint from the golf courses under the French Lick Resort Golf network covers about 50 miles from a dual epicenter in French Lick and Jasper. But as Dave Harner, the courses’ director, sees it, the ripple is gaining strength as it moves away from southwestern Indiana. A link with French Lick Resort and the bond with Sultan’s Run Golf Course in Jasper has given the unit more allure. So, too, has the ability to attract state, regional and national events to the courses in Dubois and Orange counties. Such is the case again in 2013. Sultan’s Run hosted the Indiana Golf Association-PGA Southern Open on April 29, and the Donald Ross Course and Pete Dye Course in French Lick welcomed the Big Ten Conference men’s and women’s championships the last weekend of April. In September, the Dye Course will present its challenging and scenic layout to members of the LPGA Legends Tour. “We were looking for something to appeal to our demographic, which is (the) 40 to 60 (age) range,” Harner said. “These ladies are 45 and older, and they made women’s golf what it is today. A lot of the greats will be here, and they are personable, interactive, approachable.” Fans will be able to roam — the only gallery ropes will be near the ninth and 18th
Herald file photo
Sultans Run Golf Course in Jasper stretches over 224 rolling acres. greens — as the field competes for a purse of $500,000, the largest in LPGA Legends history. The 60-player field will include notable talent including Laura Daviess, Patty Sheehan and Nancy Lopez. Overall, the lineup has combined for more than 350 LPGA Tour wins and better than 60 victories in LPGA majors. The event figures to attract curiosity from throughout the area, and that’s what Harner wants. Improvements at Sultan’s Run have created a similar effect. Work on
greens and alterations with grass heights, fertilization and weed control have upgraded the course built on Jasper’s east side in 1992. “If people haven’t experienced it in the last five years, they should try it,” Harner said. “It’s in great shape and it’s as scenic as any public golf course.” Such courses have the clout to endure. Temperatures idled in the low 60s during the Big Ten tournaments in April, and rain invaded the weekend, but Harner gauged
the approval rating from the players in the women’s field at 99 percent. He’s hoping the LPGA Legends’ visit generates similar applause. The event will begin with the Alice Dye Women’s Invitational, a team event that will consist of 100 two-player groups, Sept. 22 through 24. An LPGA clinic is set for Sept. 25 and a pro-am for Sept. 26. Tournament play will begin Sept. 27 and conclude Sept. 29. The tournament will extend French Lick’s connection with women’s golf. The resort hosted an LPGA event in 1957, and the 1959 and 1960 LGPA Championships were played in town. The Alice Dye invite has sold out every year since 2009. This year’s tournament will benefit the American Heart Association Women’s Heart Health Initiative, with the resort pledging a minimum donation of $300,000. For the resort and its courses, the payoff will be felt the week of the tournament — and before and after. Harner said other events as well as the title sponsor for the LPGA Legends tournament will be announced later this year. “The relationships have allowed us to broaden the base and bring in people for multiple days and have them play at multiple courses,” Harner said. “It helps in French Lick and in Dubois County because people have to eat, have to sleep somewhere and they experience other things besides golf. “We’re growing out of our footprint.”
