Variety of trips provide unique life experiences From Local Sources JASPER — Each year, there are many exciting trips and camps available to youth who participate in Dubois County 4-H. This year, four Dubois County 4-H’ers attended state trips with the help of the 4-H Council. Two young leaders, Louisa Nino and Luke Summerlot, attended the 4-H State Junior Leader Conference, which provides a an opportunity for youths to learn the skills needed to become better leaders within 4-H and their communities. The theme for the conference — which included time for games and team builders — was “Leadership: The Road Less Traveled.”

Connor Bowlin attended the 4-H Academy at Purdue University, where he had the chance to visit campus and explore the subject of animal science. John Summerlot attended 4-H Round Up at Purdue, a 4-H trip designed as a career exploration event for students in grades seven, eight and nine. The 4-H’ers attended classes, participated in etiquette dinners, took tours of campus and participated in bonding games and a dance. Trip opportunities for area 4-H’ers can be sponored by contacting the Purdue Extension Office at 812-482-1782 or emailing Jennifer Monarch, 4-H youth development educator, at jmon arch@purdue.edu.h

Spark clubs ignite interest in robotics By MICHAEL MAZUR Special Sections Writer JASPER — The classrooms were bursting with energy and enthusiasm, kids from 8 to 18, boys and girls, eager to delve into the world of robotics. They couldn’t wait to begin programming their robots to do all kinds of manipulations, according to Marti Mauntel and Sheila Hurst, volunteer instructors for the first two Dubois County 4-H Spark Clubs. “Kids get very excited about robotics,” Mauntel said. “Robotics is the future,” Hurst added. “It has practical applications in all industries from agriculture, manufacturing, automotive, aviation, medicine and healthcare, education, military and law enforcement.” Spark Clubs is a new concept 4-H has started across Indiana, according to Jennifer Monarch, Dubois County 4-H extension leader. These are short-term learning experiences with a minimum of six hours of instruction that are designed to attract new audiences to 4-H by covering topics that go beyond the traditional 4-H project areas. These areas of interest can include nature, law, media and technology. The hope is that the shorter time commitments and variety of topics ignite interests of future participants to the 4-H experience. Hurst and Mauntel lent their expertise and enthusiasm to 32 participants who were both current and new 4-H members in

May. Each instructor held separate two-hour Spark Club classes one day per week for three weeks. Mauntel first became interested in robotics about 10 years ago while teaching at Northeast Dubois and, after retiring, now leads a robotics team at Northeast Dubois High School and a Kids College summer robotics camp at Vincennes University Jasper Campus. Hurst teaches at Huntingburg Elementary School, conducts a robotics elementary and middle school summer camp in Huntingburg and leads a year-round after-school robotics club. They chose the Edison Robot because of its affordability and ease of use as an entry level programmable robot to teach about robotics. The robot is programmed through, EdWare which is downloaded into the robot by plugging a cable into the headphone jack of a computer. This software is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux and it uses drag-and-drop graphical icons to make programming easier. A lesson plan is included, which Mauntel says is very user friendly. The Edison robot has teaching tools to aid in teaching students how to program the robot. Since it is Lego-compatible it also shows how to build onto the robot to create other things like a front-end loader using Lego products. Since it is open source, the software can also be used online; In addition to computers, you

“The kids are excited to see what they can make the robot do. The look on their face when the robot does what it is suppose to do is very rewarding.” Marti Mauntel

Volunteer instructor can also use an iPhone, iPad or Android. The participants were mixed with their knowledge of robotics, from having no experience to intermediate to advanced experience. And since the Edison robot was already programmed to read barcodes, that provided a “great introductory lesson to show the skills of the robot,” Hurst said. “It showed the participants what skills they could learn to program.” “The kids are excited to see what they can make the robot do,” Mauntel added. “The look on their face when the robot does what it is suppose to do is very rewarding.” The robot can be programmed to turn left or right, follow a straight line, stay within a designated border, navigate around obstacles using detectors, follow

troubleshooting problems, according to Hurst. Many students who are not inclined to participate in sports find that participating in robotics brings similar competitiveness and challenges, Mauntel feels. There are many local, state and national robotic competitions. “Some kids will say that is (robotics) my sport. On the other hand, some athletes participate in robotics because of its challenges and competitiveness,” she said. Robots are programmed to do things humans do not like to do such as things that are dull and repetitive like assembly line working, dirty duties like inspecting sewer lines, dangerous jobs like handling bombs and delicate tasks like surgery. Hurst refers to a young lady who has strong interest in both medicine and robotics: “I can only dream where this interest will lead her, whether it is developing robotics to be used in medicine or being a user of robotics in medicine,” she mused. Their reward is seeing a student take a deep interest and pursue this career path. The leaders are happy to have opened new doors for young people. There is hope that robotics will become a regular 4-H club next year. Monarch urges those who wish to volunteer to help with a robotics club or starting up other Spark Clubs to contact her via email, jmonarch@purdue.edu or calling 812-482-1782.

Paired with their respective age groups in teams of two, each team advanced through the Edison lesson plan at their own learning pace, first learning to make the robot go forward, then backward, making the robot turn 90 degrees, then 180 and finally 360 degrees and having it follow the light emitted from a flashlight in a darkened room. They advance to the next lesson after they completed questions at the end of each lesson creating a reference book for future use. On the last day, Hurst’s group held Sumo wrestling competition with the robots. Participants had their robots pair against another in trying to push each out of a designated boundary. Team members may not realize it, but they learn cooperation in working with others, math skills by using geometry, communicating with one another and problem-solving. Each team traded positions between driver and navigator, who gives out verbal instructions to the driver. By playing both roles, they learn to solve problems together. They learn terms like calibration, manipulator, effector and locomotion. Robotics is a logically constructed curriculum and enables the participants to also think logically in

Camren Giesler of Ferdinand wrangled his beef cow out of the trailer in order to check in for the fair last year at the 4-H Fairgrounds in Bretzville.

My 1st year My first year as an extension educator with 4-H Youth Development has been an interesting one to say the least. I’ve been submerged into the 4-H world for the first time, and my eyes have been opened to all the great possibilities that are available to 4-H members. I have learned so much about the program and this community. It has been overwhelming at times, but I have had great support from co-workers and volunteers. I had no idea how many volunteers it took to run this organization. I am amazed at the time and dedication all the volunteers give to this program. We wouldn’t be anywhere without them! I have been very lucky to work in such a supportive community throughout my first year. I look forward to the future as I get to know more people from Dubois County and continue to try and make the best better through 4-H! Jennifer Monarch
