The Forest Park Marching Rangers, above, along with the Southridge Marching Raiders, Jasper Marching Wildcats and Northeast Dubois Marching Jeeps, in order below, are ready to take the next step in the marching band postseason as they keep their eye on a state title.
The
Long March to State Begins Now
High school marching band season is in full swing across Indiana, and 173 ensembles are putting the final touches on their shows while preparing for the competitions that will write their 2019 legacy. The Indiana State School Music Association State Finals and ISSMA Scholastic Finals loom in the not-too-distant future. And if there’s one thing that can be said about the four Dubois County marching bands, it’s that they’ve all been there and done that. Many times. The Jasper Marching Wildcats have made it to the state championship every year since 1990. The Forest Park Marching Rangers haven’t missed since 2003. The Southridge Marching Raider Band barely missed the finals in 2019, but had made it each of the previous two seasons. The Northeast Dubois Marching Jeeps have qualified for the ISSMA Scholastic State three years in a row. Locally, three bands will perform in the ISSMA Open Class: Southridge and Forest Park in Open Class D, and Jasper in Open Class B. Like athletics, open classes A through D are determined by school size. The state championships for those classes will take place on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Before that, though, bands must advance
through regional and semistate contests. The regional competitions separate the state’s bands into north and south divisions, and the top 10 from each class move on to the semistate round. That number is then cut in half, and the best 10 bands from each class earn a spot at the state finals. Northeast Dubois will compete in the Scholastic B Class, an alternative means of competition for programs whose directors opt out of the open classes. While the open classes use school enrollment to determine class placement, the scholastic classes use both school enrollment and band enrollment. The Scholastic Class is designed for bands with fewer resources than open class programs. A preliminary round for the scholastic classes will take place Saturday at Jerry Brewer Alumni Stadium in Jasper, and schools that earn a gold rating will advance to a finals contest at Lawrence Central High School on Saturday, Oct. 26. ISSMA also offers a noncompetitive festival class that is intended to give the groups feedback and evaluation based on their music quality and performance. No local bands compete in that division. Heritage Hills competes in Open Class C, but the band will not participate in an ISSMA regional competition this year. The group’s 2019 season has ended.

Marching Wildcats create, dream, inspire By ALLEN LAMAN alaman@dcherald.com JASPER — After leading the Jasper Marching Wildcats through three incredibly successful decades, former band director James Goodhue stepped down from the podium for good at the end of last school year. He left big shoes to fill. But new director Chad Gayso is decorated in his own right. He led the Forest Park Marching Rangers to six state championships and five runner-up finishes in the Indiana State School Music Association’s Open Class D, and he’s excited to take the reins of another perennial powerhouse at Jasper. “It’s been good,” he said of the transition to the school, which competes in ISSMA Open Class B. “Everybody here at the school has been awesome. The administration and other teachers have been awesome, and the students [and] parents have been really open to new ideas and been willing to try some new things.” Jasper will perform in the ISSMA Open Class Invitational at Jerry Brewer Alumni Stadium at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The 130-member band’s 2019 routine is named “Create Dream Inspire,” and the roughly 7 ½ minute show is broken into three parts, with each part focusing on one of the three words. Themes that the music and visuals explore include creating something out of nothing; dreaming big and achieving goals; and inspiring others through performance. The show begins with music from the musical “Sunday in the Park with George,” and a voiceover speaks to the audience about creating art from a blank canvas. Color guard members tap into this theme by making use of giant paint brushes. Later, the finale includes a selection from the film “Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium.” “It’s on a grander scale,” Gayso said when asked to compare this year’s routine
to his previous ones. He later added: “It’s going to be an emotional show. I think it’ll do a good job of hitting the right elements that we need to be successful.” The Marching Wildcats have strung together 29 consecutive state championship appearances, translating to a state title in 2012, four runner-up distinctions and more top-five placements than not in that span. Last season, the band placed fifth out of 10 ensembles in Open Class B at the ISSMA State Finals. Still, Gayso said his aspirations for this year aren’t necessarily tied to a top finish. “Just to be the best we can be with where we’re at with our program,” Gayso said of his goal for the season. “And just perform the best we can. As long as we do that, that’s success.” Show title: Create Dream Inspire. Repertoire: “Sunday in the Park with George” by Stephen Sondheim, “Alone in a Crowd” by Jeff Beal, “One Man Show” by Jeff Beal, “Only Light” by Aaron Perrine, “Finale: Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium” by Alexandre Desplat. Winter-themed Southridge show set to chill By ALLEN LAMAN alaman@dcherald.com HUNTINGBURG — The irony of performing a winter-themed marching band routine in scorching hot Southern Indiana temperatures is not lost on Lannie Butler, director of the Southridge Marching Raider Band. But as the air cools and the Indiana State School Music Association contest season approaches, the story-driven show is primed to chill audiences. Named “Once Upon A Winter’s Night,” the fantasy-laced performance is set in a magical winter wonderland that plays off themes from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. The routine is broken into four imaginative movements that take place alongside props like snow-covered trees. “The great thing about a show like this — which most of our shows, we try to do this — [is that] the students themselves have some ownership of it,” Butler said. “They’ve got an opportunity to be creative.” Southridge will perform alongside six other Open Class D bands in the ISSMA Open Invitational at Jerry Brewer Alumni Stadium on Saturday. The band will take the field at 4:15 p.m. Butler explained that the story of the performance revolves around a curse that is placed on the dreamland the musicians and color guard create. Performers “crack out of the ice” and begin their movements at the start of the show, he said, and a surprise twist near the end reveals the identity of the evil queen who placed the curse. The group just barely missed qualifying for the ISSMA finals last November. Prior to that, Southridge placed seventh in Open Class D finals in 2017 and sixth in 2016. “I know the kids this year, they experienced that last year, and they don’t really want to experience that again,” Butler said. “So, their goal is definitely to make it to state finals.” But even if they don’t, Butler said that won’t be the determining factor of a successful season. He just wants the band to
Schneider Law Office 427 E. 4th St., Huntingburg 812-683-3957
give maximum effort and reach their full potential. The Huntingburg performers have been clicking on all levels so far, which is a good sign to Butler. He said the band has a great, experienced senior class that is integral in leading the group. “They’re all good leaders,” Butler said. “But they also kind of know their role, if that makes any sense. We’re a true ensemble. We’re a small group, but a true ensemble that the kids kind of accept that this is my role in the band, and then they fulfill that.” He continued: “They work as a team really, really well. There’s not a lot of ‘I,’ ‘me.’ There’s a lot more of ‘we, us.’ We do it for us.” Show title: Once Upon a Winter’s Night. Repertoire: “Once Upon a Winter’s Night,” “In the Bleak MidWinter,” “Winter’s Curse.” All music composed by Lannie Butler and Joe Phelps. Southridge Marching Raiders roster Drum Major: Brianna Stasel. Band Helpers: Ruby Garcia, Erika Meece, Ellis Johnson, Elizabeth Cruz and Katherine Dubon. Baritone: Josh Blocker, Andrew Sander, Lindsay Echeverria, Denae Reimann and Kevin Avalos. Baritone Saxophone: Phillip Hartwick. Bass Clarinet: Devin Carter. Marching Jeeps eyeing ‘Pathways’ back to finals By ALLEN LAMAN alaman@dcherald.com DUBOIS — With three consecutive trips to the Indiana State School Music Association’s Scholastic Finals under their belts, the Dubois Marching Jeeps have made it an annual habit to find successful avenues to the biggest contest in their class. But Band Director David Fox would be lying if he said he came into the 2019 season confident that the band would live up to the high standards established during those past seasons. Fast forward to the week before the group’s most important contest of the season, and Fox is feeling much better. “They’ve just done a great job of being very even-keeled with their work habits and their work ethic at practice,” Fox said of this year’s Jeeps band. “Everything I tell them they need to do better, they give a sincere effort into improving. We’ve had a lot of good success this year, not only with scores, but with just feeling like we’re making good progress because of consistency.” The band’s routine is titled “Pathways” and focuses on roads. Performers make use of a roundabout tarp that guides them, as well as street signs that factor directly into the roadway theme. In the routine’s second movement — titled “Children at Play” — the students use their acting skills while playing games and doing other goofy things. The Jeeps will perform in the ISSMA’s Scholastic Class Prelims at Jerry Brewer Alumni Stadium in Jasper at 11:39 a.m. on Saturday. If the band earns a gold rating, the Jeeps will march to the Scholastic Class Finals at Lawrence Central High School on Saturday, Oct. 26. If the band earns anything less, its season will end. The routine’s music ranges from slow and expressive to fast-paced and rhythmic. The members have individual goals of beat-

ing particular bands or qualifying for the finals contest, but Fox’s aspirations for the 24-member marching band — the smallest in Dubois County — are to challenge the kids and make them feel like they gave everything they could to their cause. “I’ve always said you just work on you, and you do your best,” Fox said. “And that stuff will take care of itself.” This year, the Jeeps have bought into that mentality, and it’s paid off. “I’m really happy with it,” he said of the band’s progress. “Yesterday [Saturday, Oct. 5], we had our highest score before prelims that we’ve ever had.” He later added: “It makes me excited. It makes me a little anxious, but they’re doing good things. I was really, really happy with how they performed yesterday. I threw a lot of stuff at them, and they really handled it like mature musicians.” Show title: “Pathways.” Repertoire: “Equus” by Eric Whitacre and “Gymnopédie” by Erik Satie.

Rangers march into new era at the fair By ALLEN LAMAN alaman@dcherald.com
young band director in the state of Indiana. “It’s still a massive learning process for me,” Obermeyer said of his first season as a marching band director. “But it’s been great, really. I couldn’t possibly imagine having a better start to a season. Period. It’s been fun.” So far, the band has brought home a host of early-season accolades, including first place finishes and special distinctions at many contests. Forest Park boasts a big senior class, and is also heavy on underclassmen. Obermeyer explained that his goal for the season was to maintain the integrity of the group, while tackling the worries that inevitably come with the change of leadership. He wants members to continue to take immense pride in their craft, and he believes that goal has been achieved. “Everybody, even the parents included, were just wondering what was gonna happen, and if the Forest Park Rangers were gonna continue doing what they do best,” Obermeyer said of the collective preseason anxieties. “And so really my goal was just to make sure the students still bought in to the program. It’s my goal to make sure that they have something they’re proud of to do, and that’s been the main focus.”
FERDINAND — Following a state championship season, the Forest Park Marching Rangers are headed to the fair. Loosely based on the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Forest Park’s 2019 routine is a spectacle that taps into themes of regalness and elegance. “It’s definitely not a circus show,” stressed Eric Obermeyer, the Rangers’ new leader. The Marching Rangers will perform the routine in Open Class D at the Indiana State School Music Association Open Invitational at Jasper’s Jerry Brewer Alumni Stadium on Saturday. The band and color guard will take the field at 3 p.m. The show is divided into three movements. The first is centered on a carousel, the second is a love story with ferris wheel imagery, and the final movement is based on high-striker, test-yourstrength games. While the show is based on the early 20th century world’s fair, it also has historical ties to Forest Park. A Forest Park exists in the St. Louis area, and that swath of land served as the main fairgrounds at the global event. Obermeyer is in his rookie season as a marching band director. He brings a stacked resume to the annually impressive Forest Park program: graduating from Jasper High School in 2012 and later earning a degree in music education with an emphasis in euphonium and piano from Murray State University in 2018. Obermeyer composed and directed a song while in high school, and was a member of the professional Drum Corps International group in 2014 and 2016. Last year, while working as the band director at South Knox High School in Vincennes, he received the Conn-Selmer Award for outstanding
