4-H became lifelong career for Sander By MICHAEL MAZUR Special Sections Writer DUBOIS — Some 4-H members just can’t get 4-H out of their blood. For many, it’s a 10-year career that begins in the third grade and concludes with graduation from high school. But Stephen Sander, 56, extended that career by becoming an adult leader for the Ramblers Club, the same club of which he was a member, the year after graduation at age 18. “It was kind of funny (in a strange way) that the adult leaders that were there when I was a member, I was now an equal with them,” Sander said. Now Duane Beyke, a former student member under Sander’s tutelage is a co-adult leader with him. During his 37 years as an adult leader, he has led 300 to 400 4-H members in completion of their projects. While a youth member himself, he gained confidence in speaking in front of people, which helped him to become a successful adult leader. When asked if he has inspired any of those kids, his aw-shucks modesty comes forth and he says that he really doesn’t know. But the 4-H kids he has inspired the most are his kids — Joshua, 29, Dana Erny, 27, Calvin, 17 and an incoming senior at Northeast Dubois High School, and Heidi, 12, who will be in the eighth grade. Calvin says a major perk having his father as the adult leader is the he doesn’t have to wait until meeting time to have his project book signed; he can wait until the

4-H leader Stephen Sander of Dubois caulked a refrigerator outside the concession stand for adult leaders at the Dubois County Park and 4-H Fairgrounds in Bretzville on Wednesday afternoon. Sander called the recently installed refrigerator his “pet project.” Sander said when he was a 4-H’er he carried many soft drinks to concessions stands from coolers 40 to 50 feet away. day it’s due. “One of the things I am working on is not procrastinating,”

Calvin quipped. Sander has a more laid-back approach to leading the members.

“I don’t push someone to stay in 4-H. I feel if that is where they want to be they will motivate

themselves,” he said. He is there to guide them with their projects, helping with rules interpretation and advice, constantly emphasizing the importance of commitment, following through with a project to its completion and being on time. Getting things done and done right is a mantra Sander learned while growing up in 4-H. He does admit it takes patience to be a leader, especially with such a divergence of ages. “I love to be able to go to him for help with my project when I need to,” Heidi said. Since his father raised dairy cows, it is no surprise Sander showed dairy cows along with his younger brother, Mark, and sister, Gail Webb, as their 4-H projects. He also dabbled in woodworking and electricity. His older children also showed dairy cows; Calvin showed them for one year before Sander changed from raising dairy cows to raising about 50,000 turkeys a year. For the past 24 years, Sander has raised turkeys for Perdue Farms. Both Calvin and Heidi enter turkeys as one of their projects and have regular duties in the farm operation, including feeding and watering each flock as they go from the brooder house as poults to the other buildings as they grow. In about 20 weeks, the turkeys are market-ready, weighing about 40 pounds. During the fair, the turkeys are judged by representatives from See SANDER on the Page 8

Being in 4-H, especially for a 4-H family, is not only a time to make new and lifelong friends, it is also a time that brings a family closer together, generating stories to pass down through the generations. dairy cows, his cow became tired and decided to lay down in the middle of the ring in front of the judges, shattering his hopes for the big prize. “But, go figure, after all that, (the cow) won the showmanship award for that night,” he said. Calvin, who also entered woodworking projects like his father, recalls the time he built a hog trough for his older, unmarried brother, Joshua, to eat from during his sister’s wedding. oldest child is to be married first and if he or she isn’t, there are consequences to pay. For Sander, developing lifelong friendships is the best thing about 4-H. After each fair and just before school begins, the members of the Ramblers 4-H Club are rewarded for their hard work with a daytrip to Holiday World or a picnic at Sanders’ farm planned and organized by Sanders’ wife, Marla. Although his modesty prevents him from thinking he has inspired anyone, he needs to look no fur-

ther than to his son, Calvin. “Being in 4-H makes me feel a part of something and I like the feeling of accomplishment,” said Calvin, who plans to study chemistry in college. From being a member to becoming an adult leader for 37 years — without a break in service — takes a special commitment and love of what 4-H represents. “I joined 4-H as an adult leader to continue what I was doing as a member. I enjoy being a member,” Sander said. “It is in my blood.”
