Inside the Playground Southern Indiana has hundreds of attractions, and the Patoka River valley lays claim to many of the most well know. See our list on Page 5. Centrally located between caves, coasters, lakes and Lincoln, Dubois County is connected through heritage, culture, recreation, arts and architecture. Page 6. Orange County has much to offer — it’s a place to leave the stress behind. Page 7. Crawford County offers a variety of outstanding natural areas and interesting historic sites. Page 9. Rich with history and outdoor adventure, Martin County is one of Indiana’s natural treasures. Page 10. From Abraham Lincoln to Santa Claus, diversity is the name of the game in Spencer County. Page 11. When looking for a place to stay, whether it be in a secluded cabin in the woods or hotel with all the amenities, look no further than Page 24. On the cover: Dana Reckelhoff, interpretive naturalist at Patoka Reservoir, trained a new 11-month-old bald eagle at the park recently. The eagle, which was born in Alaska and recuperated in California from an injury suffered in a nest collapse, can not fly. The park recently introduced the new eagle to the public. It takes the place of the park’s last resident eagle, who died in 2009 while undergoing surgery in Louisville to remove a tumor. The new eagle can be viewed at the park’s visitor center. ■■  Published by The Jasper Herald Company, 216 East Fourth St., Jasper IN

Patoka Reservoir the heart of region Patoka Reservoir is the second-largest man-made lake in Indiana. But in the Patoka River valley, it remains the biggest point on the map. While the region where the river ambles has seen dozens of other attractions grow up and expand since the lake’s creation in the early 1970s — and several of those attract more visitors — Patoka Reservoir remains the heart of this area’s outdoor activity, and on a grand scale. The 8,800-acre lake continues to be the focal point of Patoka’s 27,000 acres. But the recreation — fishing, swimming, skiing and such — are only byproducts. The project was developed for flood control and that area reaches into Dubois, Crawford and Orange counties. Patoka is the only lake in the state to offer floating cabins, wine cruises and rentable houseboats. The visitors center, located inside the Newton-Stewart State Recreation Area, continues to operate and several programs are planned for this summer. A weekly notice of those programs is published in The Herald. The property itself is divided into major sections, called State Recreation Areas. Here is a quick look at the major SRAs. Newton-Stewart The 4,564-acre Newton-Stewart State Recreation Area is at the center of Patoka’s summertime. Located just north of Wickliffe, it is the main recreation area on the lake. There are 455 modern campsites, a camp store, marina, hiking and bicycling trails, 18-hole disc golf course, archery course, the visitors center, a beach and expanses of wooded area to explore. All told, Patoka offers more campsites than any of the other eight state-run reservoirs in Indiana. And though the sites are full only a few times a year, they are still among the top in producing revenue for the state. Fees for Newton-Stewart activities (except camping fees and equipment rentals)

User fees Here are a few of the costs at Patoka Reservoir for residents of Indiana. ■■ Gate fee for noncommercial vehicles with Indiana license plates, every day including holidays — $5 ($40 annual pass available) ■■ Gate fee for noncommercial vehicles that do not have Indiana license plates, every day including holidays — $7 ($60 annual pass available) ■■ Golden Hoosier Passports are available for Indiana residents who are at least 65 years of age or are eligible for Social Security disability payments under 42 U.S. C. 401 for half the price of the Resident Annual Entrance Permit. ■■ Indiana residents who are former POW’s or their surviving spouses are entitled to a free Indiana Golden Hoosier Permit. ■■ Gate fee for each person, 5 years and older, entering as a pedestrian, on bicycle or horseback — $2 For updates on activities, check The Herald’s Billboard section. For updates on camping, call the reservoir at 812685-2464, or log onto http://www. in.gov/dnr/parklake/. For information on the visitors center, call 812-685-2447.

are included in the entrance fee. The Patoka Lake Visitors Center offers daily excursions and a variety of other activities. Displays of Indiana artifacts, local geological features, wildlife and plant specimens help visitors understand the natural wonders of the area. Various programs are coordinated through the center, including a regular Saturday night program in the modern campground.

A weekly schedule of events at the center is posted around the lake, and published in The Herald. Six miles of paved, isolated bicycle trails wind along through the woods around the roadways in the rec reation area. Cyclists should bring their own rides because bikes are not rented at Newton-Stewart. The South Ramp is nearest the main entrance and opens into 5-mph waters. It is the frequent choice of boaters with sailing vessels. The Newton-Stewart Boat Ramp opens unlimited-speed waters where skiing is allowed. A third ramp is located in the Fishermen’s Campground and is reserved exclusively for fishermen and campers. Lick Fork and South Lick Fork Dubois County fishermen, boaters and skiers approaching from the Jasper area will be drawn primarily to the two boat ramps in Dubois County. The South Lick Fork Ramp, located along State Road 164 about 12 miles east of Jasper, appeals to fishermen since it sits at the tip of a long zone of controlled water where the speed limit is 10 mph. The Lick Fork Ramp, located 31⁄2 miles north of the South Lick Fork Ramp, is in unlimited-speed, no-skiing waters and should be the choice of skiers and boaters seeking open water. The Lick Fork Ramp is accessible from a road leading north (State Road 545) from State Road 164 just east of the Celestine community and west of South Lick Fork Ramp. From the north, the Lick Fork Ramp can be reached by driving south from the dam and tail water area, past the Patoka Lake Water Treatment Plant. Other ramps and SRAs Several other boat ramps are located in Orange and Crawford counties. Go to www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/ for more information

Create lifelong memories in Dubois County By JESSICA LINDAUER For The Herald Geographically centered between caves, coasters, lakes and Lincoln, Dubois County is connected through heritage, culture, recreation, arts and architecture. Just minutes from Patoka Lake, come off the water for an adventure to remember! To begin your journey, stop at the Dubois County Museum — one of the largest county museums in the state of Indiana. This museum showcases the rich German heritage and history of the Dubois County area. Visit the newest exhibit, “Main Street Dubois County”, featuring 17 rooms portraying life at the turn of the 20th century including a barber shop, bank, hotel, photographer and shoe shop. A hands-on area houses a one-room schoolhouse and play yard, an interactive Lewis & Clark expedition boat, dress-up area and a log reading nook. Take a journey back in time with a visit to the double log cabin, historic agriculture machinery collection and the furniture industry, sports, and military exhibit. Enjoy a day in downtown Jasper. Start your morning with a stroll on the Riverwalk, a paved walking trail along the Patoka River. This path winds through the scenic wooded areas and farm lands within walking distance of downtown. Along the path, stop at the Jasper City Mill. This mill replicates two previous mills that once stood along the Patoka in the 1800s. Watch the workings of the waterwheel and see how the cornmeal that is sold on site is made. Enjoy breakfast at one of the local cafés followed by unique and specialty shopping around the square in Jasper. Visit the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame located on the Vincennes University Jasper Campus showcasing memorabilia from high school, college and professional athletes throughout Indiana. Don’t forget to stop at the well-known Schnitzelbank Restaurant. Enjoy the award-winning Super46 Bratzel sandwich that was voted Indiana’s No. 1 sandwich! Also located in Dubois County is The

Spirit of Jasper Train, a recently restore d passenger train that takes an excursion to French Lick and multiple Ride & Dine trips. Board the luxurious, climate-controlled lounge cars for a trip of a lifetime. Visit Huntingburg to enjoy a night at the ballpark. Huntingburg League Stadium is home to the Dubois County Bombers, a summer collegiate wooden bat league team. League Stadium was the set for the Rockford Peaches home field in the motion picture “A League of Their Own.” This unique experience will portray the spectator as if they were taken back in time to a game in the 1940s era. While in town, stop at Historic Fourth Street for unique and antique shopping. Throughout Dubois County one can find multiple significant and historic churches that are the groundwork to building such great communities. Saint Joseph Catholic Church is an 1880 Romanesque, old-world style church that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Noteworthy features include three beautiful Austrian mosaics with 50 million stones and statues made of marble and pewter as well as the Italian marble altar. The Monastery Immaculate Conception was recently restored and is home to one of the largest communities of Benedictine women in the nation. It is also on the National Register of Historic Places and is designated an Official Project of Save America’s Treasures. Looking for quality golf at value pricing? Sultan’s Run Golf Club extends over 224 acres of woods, wildlife and water. In 2013 it was voted the Eighth Best Golf Course in the State of Indiana by Golf Week. Finish at the 18th hole where the beautiful waterfall sets the scene. Just ten minutes down the road, enjoy another 18 holes at Buffalo Trace Golf Course. Buffalo Trace plays 5,985 yards with a par 71. Dubois County hosts several unique European inspired and music festivals throughout the year. The Jasper Strassenfest takes place July 31 to Aug. 3 around the Square in downtown Jasper and celebrates the area’s rich German heritage. It is a weekend full of events including several sports tourna-

ments, a 5K- run/walk, approximately 30 entertainment acts throughout the weekend. Enjoy polka masses, carnival rides, an open-air biergarten, and much more. The third annual Heartland Half Marathon and 5K will take place Aug. 30 with a few new additions to the event. The Heartland Team Challenge is a relay comprised of a 4-person team and follows the same course as the Heartland Half Marathon. The first runner in the relay will run 4.2 miles and pass along their timing chip to the second runner who will run 3.6 miles. The third runner will run 3 miles and the fourth runner will complete the race with a 2.3 mile run. Awards will be given for the top three finishing teams and Best Heart Friendly Team Slogan. The course features a start along the Patoka River near the Jasper City Mill and Jasper Train Depot and finishes in the shade in the parks on the banks of the same river just a stone’s throw away. All the proceeds will be given to the Lange-Fuhs Cancer Center and Philip R. Nature’s beauty, variety fill Crawford County By HAROLD ALLISON For The Herald One county I always enjoy visiting when I go on a day trip is Crawford County. It offers a variety of outstanding natural areas and some very interesting historic sites. Most people pass through Crawford County on either I-64 or State Road 64 and never realize what exciting locations are to be found on either side of these roads. The village of Taswell is a good place to begin our tour of this rugged county. Located on State Road 64, Taswell is a quiet little country town. Two prongs of Patoka Lake extend down into Crawford County, which has one boat ramp on its share of the lake. On one of these arms is the Sycamore Creek Marsh, a nice wetland area. South of Taswell, along the county road that passes under the railroad that runs

through the village, is the Yellow Birch Ravine, a state nature preserve. The area is named for a few yellow birch trees that are usually found in northern regions. It is rare to find one this far south. Traveling on to the hamlet of Mifflin, once the site of a salt works, is a low but pretty waterfall on Otter Creek, which runs through Mifflin. Along the county road that runs east from Mifflin is a series of wetlands that have been constructed on Hoosier National Forest land. South of Mifflin is another Hoosier National Forest area. This is Hemlock Cliffs, one of the most impressive natural areas in Indiana. The site is well named for there are both hemlock trees and a series of cliffs as well as deep ravines, waterfalls, rock shelters that were utilized by Native Americans for hundreds of years, and a large natural arch.

Little Blue River, which passes through Crawford County from English to the Ohio River, is a great canoeing stream. A variety of scenic natural features are found all along this Hoosier gem of a river. The uncommon umbrella magnolia, a southern species, is found in Indiana only in the area east of the village of St. Croix, and Sulphur Springs on State Road 66 is a historic mineral water location now long gone. The Stinking Fork of the Little Blue River, which enters the Little Blue at Sulphur Springs, is named for the mineral waters located near the stream. Some very outstanding natural sites are to be found in this area and are well worth exploring. State Road 66, which runs through both Crawford and Perry counties, is a very scenic road. It can provide an enjoyable road trip through this picturesque southern Indiana countryside.

East of State Road 66 on county roads is the Buzzard Roost Overlook on National Forest lands. This is a scenic site above the Ohio River with a somewhat rugged hiking trail that winds down to the Ohio. Farther east on a county road is the quaint village of Alton, where the Little Blue River runs into the Ohio. From Alton, county roads run along the Ohio past Bulls Point, the Ox Bow Bend of the Ohio, Cave Sandy and Artist Point, which features a great view of the river, Fredonia, a historic site, and Leavenworth. State Road 62 runs through Leavenworth, which contains both an upper and lower section and has a fascinating history, and then on to the Wyandotte Cave, Harrison- Crawford State Forest region. This area features caves, high wooded hills, several nature preserves, cliffs of limestone and scenery that is like a picture postcard.

Imagine riding the world’s longest water coaster, sipping frozen hot chocolate, measuring your height against a young Abe Lincoln’s and tasting local wines all in one trip. You can find all of that and more right in your backyard. Spencer County, nestled in the rolling hills of southern Indiana, is home to Santa Claus, Indiana, and Lincoln’s Indiana Boyhood Home. The town of Santa Claus is a magical and historical place to visit for the entire family. With the only post office in the world to have the Santa Claus name, thousands of letters pile into this small, charming town annually. Visitors from all over have letters and Christmas cards postmarked from the one-and-only Santa Claus, Ind. Plan for more than a day of fun at Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari. In 2013, TIME magazine named the park’s Voyage the nation’s #1 wooden roller coaster. Splashin’ Safari, named the Best Waterpark in the U.S. by USA Today, includes two of the longest water coasters in the world and more. The parks offer free soft drinks, free parking, free inner tube usage, free sunscreen, and free Wi-Fi. Visit the Santa Claus Museum & Village to learn about the history of this picturesque town and see the fully restored 1935 Santa Statue, Santa Claus Church, and original Santa Claus Post Office. Venture over to Santa’s Candy Castle for a magical Christmas experience for believers of all ages and browse through the gigantic Santa Claus Christmas Store for holiday treasures. Find outdoor recreational activities in Santa Claus, too. Play a round of mini golf at Frosty’s Fun Center or try your swing at the 18-hole Christmas Lake Golf Course. Ride a horse through the winding trails and enjoy horseback riding activities for all ages at Santa’s Stables. Only five miles away from Santa Claus

is where our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, grew up. Spencer County is where young Abe spent 14 years of his life from ages 7 to 21. Visit the fertile ground of Lincoln’s childhood home at Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial and see a replica of Lincoln’s homestead at the Living Historical Farm. Right across the street from the National Memorial is Lincoln State Park, established as a memorial to Abraham’s mother, Nancy Hanks. Walk the trails on the same grounds Abe walked many years ago and visit the Lincoln Bicentennial Plaza which celebrates his 200th birthday. Watch Abe’s Indiana story come to life on stage at Lincoln Amphitheatre. A. Lincoln: A Pioneer Tale premieres in June and is a two-act musical with an original score
