Smoking Dear Editor, Do you hate people who smoke? I know I do! In my opinion, I think Jasper needs people to quit smoking. The first reason is people can crash because people smoke too much in just one day. Another reason is people can get hurt because it can give you cancer and it’s bad for your lungs. My last reason is people can die and you want to
Dear Editor, Do you like movies? I do! In my opinion I think Jasper needs a drive-in movie theater. The first reason is if you already have food you don’t have to spend all your money. The other reason is so we don’t have to hear other people talking so you can enjoy the movie. The last reason I think we should have a drive-in movie theater is because if you have a baby nobody will hear it cry. Now do you think we should have a drive-in movie theater? Tyler Jochum Grade 2, Fifth Street School
Love nature Dear Editor, Boom! What’s that sound? Animals of course! In my opinion, I think Jasper should get a zoo. Vincent Huckelby Grade 2, Fifth Street School
Children’s park Dear Editor, Where is a place you can play? A children’s park of course. In my opinion I think Jasper needs a children’s park. The first reason is you can have a picnic because you do not want to clean the house. Another reason is you get to spend more time with your kids because they are at school and you are at work so on the weekends you can play with them sometimes. The last reason I think we should get a children’s park in Jasper is because you can get exercise by running and doing the monkey bars. Now do you want to have a children’s park? Elizabeth Leonard Grade 2, Fifth Street School
Read a book Dear Editor, Have you ever read a book? In my opinion, I think we needs a bookstore in Jasper. The first reason is parents don’t have to order books online because there will be a bookstore. Another reason is so kids can get more AR points because you will read books then take an AR test. The last reason, I think we should get a bookstore is so parents don’t have to drive to Evansville to get books and don’t have to pay for a lot of gas because it will be closer. Now do you want to have a bookstore? Emma Leonard Grade 2, Fifth Street School
Dear Editor, We need more pet stores so no one will be lonely and not be bored. People could get a pet if they don’t have a pet. If ten people want a pet the pet store could get enough money to keep the pet store open for people that don’t have a pet. If a person has a pet they would need to buy a leash, a bowl, and a name tag from the pet store. These are the reasons I think we should make more pet stores. Daniel Cortez Grade 2, Fifth Street School
Dear Editor, I want people to take care of pets. They can stay healthier. It is important to keep them safe. I know they shouldn’t be in the cold in the winter. They can die. Now you know why I want people to take care of pets. Bella Carie Grade 2, Fifth Street School
Art store Dear Editor, I think we need an art store. We need an art store so we can get special pens and pencils in case we need them. We also need an art store so we can get canvases and pastels. Madyson Hurst Grade 2, Fifth Street School
Swimming pool Dear Editor, We need a new swimming pool because the other one is too deep for little kids. I think that we need a new swimming pool because we could drown. We need a new swimming pool so we can take swimming lessons. Nolla Davis Grade 2, Fifth Street School
Larger school Dear Editor, I think we need a larger school because we could have more classrooms. If it had two computer labs we could take tests on computers. We could have learning games on computers. The school could have more bathrooms than classes so we wouldn’t have to wait to use them. I think the school needs more music rooms because two classrooms can go to music at the same time and we need two art rooms because on one we can get caught up on some projects and on the 2nd art room we can learn more about projects. I think we need more walls because if we had more walls we can stick more habits on the walls. I think we need all those things and it would be great. Emily Regalado Grade 2, Fifth Street School
Sports complex Dear Editor, I believe that Jasper should have a sports complex. One reason is more people will like sports. Another reason is it will make Jasper a funner place. The best reason is when people are bored they can go to the sports complex. Now please can Jasper have a sports complex. Jaxon Werner Grade 2, Fifth Street School
Not safe Dear Editor, I believe that Jasper should have a bigger swimming pool with more slides. One reason is that kids can be hurt. Another reason is that it is not safe for little kids. My best reason is that there are too many kids at the slide. Please think about making a new swimming pool with more slides. Ally Larkin Grade 2, Fifth Street School
Smells bad Dear Editor, I believe that everyone should stop smoking. One reason is it smells bad. Another reason is people throw cigaretts on the ground and they litter. The best reason is it causes skinesses. Please think about not smoking any more. Androulla Neophytou Grade 2, Fifth Street School
Bowling alley Dear Editor, Jasper our town needs another bowling alley. The bowling alley can be packed. All of the spaces can be full. People can come on holidays. Some are Halaween, Christmas, and Birthdays. There can be food that people can eat. Some food like hambergers and french fries. Now do you know you should get us another bowling alley. Reagan Weisheit Grade 2, Fifth Street School
Theme park Dear Editor, I think Jasper needs a theme park. People in Jasper can have fun! They will have fun by getting on roller coasters, ferris wheels, photo booths, horse rides, bouncy houses with a slide that goes down, swings, music bands, food stands, games and animals you can pet. People can celebrate holidays there. At the theme park people can celibrate holidays there like New Years day, Valentine’s Day, Easter, April fools day, Fourth of July, Halloween, Christmas and birthdays. There can be holiday specials. There can be all different kinds of holidays. Now do you know why we need a theme park? Kayle Guardado Grade 2, Fifth Street School
Laser Tag
Skiing place
Dear Editor, I think Jasper needs a Laser Tag in the middle of Jasper. My first reason is people will like it. My second reason is kids might say it is fun here. My best reason is parents will like to come there and hang out at Laser Tag sometimes. So please build a Laser Tag in the middle of Jasper. Abner Duran Grade 2, Fifth Street School

Pet care Dear Editor, People need to take care of pets everyday. Your pets can die if you don’t feed them or water so take care of them. Your pets should have toys and be held and took care of everyday not sometimes, all the time. I try to take care of my pets everyday but sometimes I forget and you should remember everyday like me all the time that means everyday when you get home from school. Jessica Berg Grade 2, Fifth Street School
Stop smoking Dear Editor, I think people need to stop smoking. I think people should not smoke because it damages lungs and children. This is also not healthy for people. It is also a law for people to not smoke at restaurants. This is why I think people need to stop smoking. Johnson Dong Grade 2, Fifth Street School
Indoor ice rink Dear Editor, Jasper needs to have an indoor ice rink. You can practice so you can show your friend. If you want the ice rink in the summer and your bored you can go to the ice rink. You can have fun with your family. I think we should have an indoor ice rink. Devin Otto Grade 2, Fifth Street School
Water park Dear Editor, Jasper should have a fun water park because we could ride rollercoasters that are under ground. We could have water slides under ground. It could have fast, fast rides and we could name them like the twister or Rocket even the Screamer. This is why Jasper have a water park. Cooper Welp Grade 2, Fifth Street School
Hurts other people Dear Editor, People should stop smoking because it could cause cancer. I think people should stop smoking because it hurts other people. People who smoke should stop because it goes in the air. Now you know why you should stop smoking. Brock Schnaus Grade 2, Fifth Street School
Recycle all the time Dear Editor, I think ALL people in the WORLD should recycle. It is a worldwide problem. It we don’t recycle it will cause landfills to fill up and then we have to dig more landfills. Landfills destroy animal habitats and may kill animals. Landfills cause pollution. If we can recycle we can reuse stuff and help our planet Earth. I read a lot about this in science and reading this year in 3rd grade. Alex Williams Grade 3, Tenth Street School
Smoking very, very bad Dear Editor, People need to stop smoking!! It causes lung cancer! It can harm you and your children!!!! It can harm the environment. Luckily you can’t go to jail for smoking BUT it’s still bad to smoke! Do you know why? It’s very, very, very, very bad for you! It can do very bad damage to you. It can turn your teeth yellow. It can hurt your lungs and your heart. I don’t know how many times I said it but SMOKING is BAD! People I know smoke cigarettes. They didn’t get sick yet and I hope they don’t! So please stop smoking. Maris Drew Grade 3, Tenth Street School
Calling for a mall Dear Editor, We should have a mall in Jasper, Indiana so we don’t have to drive to Evansville. Many people would enjoy a mall here. People can get the things they have always wanted but their parents would always say no to because they don’t want to drive out of town to get it. Now parents will probably say, yes. People who come from out of town can then go to the mall and shop. I would

love the mall. My friends would love the mall. Everyone would love the mall! Please, please can we get a mall? Addison Simmers Grade 3, Tenth Street School
More tennis courts Dear Editor, I think we need more tennis courts. I’d like to play tennis more, but there are only two or three tennis courts around Jasper. Lots of people like to play tennis, so some people might not be able to play. This is why I think we need more tennis courts in the town of Jasper. Madison Beck Grade 4, Tenth Street School
Picking sides Dear Editor, Wouldn’t you like to pick the side for lunch? For example, what if you didn’t like something. Well you would get to pick what side you want. I’m not saying pick what meal, just the sides. Doesn’t that sound better? Jocelynne Calderon Grade 4, Tenth Street School
Let’s get a zoo Dear Editor, Wouldn’t it be great if we had a zoo here in Jasper? I think we should have a zoo because kids might get bored. They need new stuff to look at and to play. Another reason is because it is entertainment to the children. These are reasons why I think we should have a zoo. Citlaly Alfaro Lopez Grade 4, Tenth Street School
Hunting limits Dear Editor, I feel that there should be some changes with the hunting limits in Jasper. I think there should be more space to hunt. For example on 300 north Kellerville Road there’s unending forest on each side. One side you are allowed to hunt, and on the other side you aren’t. I hope that get’s fixed. Trey Wiseman Grade 4, Tenth Street School
School to school Dear Editor, Some people move to new places in the world. I had moved to Jasper and then Huntingburg and then more. When you move you have to meet new friends but it’s sad. You are going to miss your old friends. If you move again than you are going to miss them too. I wish someday this will stop and I do not have to worry about moving again. Marilyn Franco Grade 4, Tenth Street School
Sky-high hopes Dear Editor, We need a Sky Zone because more people would come to Jasper. If we had a Sky Zone it would be more fun in Jasper. Jasper could get a lot of new stuff. This is why I think we should have a sky zone in Jasper. Jacob Leonard Grade 4, Tenth Street School
More Pop-Tarts Dear Editor, At Tenth Street Elementary School we only have two choices of poptarts and that is not Red Velvet poptarts. I am tired of the same two options of poptarts. We should have Red Velvet poptarts because, it has a better taste than plain pop tart or chocolate pop tart. Also we should have bacon because, everyone likes that crispy taste to the bacon. Both foods are breakfast food so why could we not have it. All we have to do is kick bad food out and put these good foods in the menu for breakfast. Samuel Burks Grade 4, Tenth Street School
Improved technology Dear Editor, We should have more improved devices in Tenth Street Elementary. Like computers that we can take home to do our homework and if we forget something we can look on the Internet to see if we have homework Azor Guardado Grade 4, Tenth Street
Humane Society space
Laser tag
Dear Editor, We need a new bigger Humane Society there are so many animals the have to share a pin there cages are dirty and need bleach to clean them. They don’t have enough room to run plus they need a bigger and better optical course that’s all they get to run in. We need a spot just for the new born puppies so the mother can take care of them till they’re old enough. The puppies need a bigger room to play and their mothers can take care of them. They adults need bigger cages to run, sleep, and, play. Kylene Danzer Grade 4, Tenth Street School
Dear Editor, Have you ever been laser tagging. Not very many people have. I want there to be a place for children to go laser tagging in Jasper. There is only one place far away that I know of that you can play laser tag. Some people may not even know what laser tagging is. I think it is an active game that you do not sit around watching t.v. or playing on the computer. People do too much of that. You know what I mean? Last, I think that if there was a place in Jasper, there should be a place for kids 7 and younger so they are not mixed with rough, older kids. There should be another room for kids 8 and older. There should only be a limited amount of people in one round so no one gets hurt. That is my idea for a good place in Jasper. Hope Fromme Grade 4, Tenth Street School
Petting zoo Dear Editor, I would like a petting zoo in jasper it would make my gold heart so happy do you want it to turn cold and see the girl I use to be slip away so slowly. Anyway it would be so cool to see camels, donkeys, llamas and many more. I want to pet one and ride an animal oh and see a parrot. It would be so wonderful so I hope it can happen. Rachel Torres Grade 4, Tenth Street School
Skateboard park Dear Editor, I want a Skateboard Park because in Jasper there is no Skateboard Park. There is no place to Skateboard in Jasper so your will have to drive very long to get to a Skateboard Park. At the Skateboard Park you can rent and buy skateboards and skateboard gear. There will be snacks at the Skateboard Park. You can rent and buy scooters at the Skateboard Park. Grant Dennison Grade 4, Tenth Street School
Get with the program Dear Editor, I think there should be a programing class in elementary school. It should be Python Programing. Python is an easier programing app. I love programing and want a programing class so I can learn some programing when I am at school. I think a lot of kids would like programing too. It is fun and kids learn doing Python. The codes are simple like print (“Nice!”). This command makes it print nice. Another example is import turtle t=turtle. Pen for x in range (100) t.forward x t.left 61. Capitals and non capitols are necessary. Import turtle makes turtle, an add on to Python active. T=turtle. Pen makes a part of turtle active and the t is assigned a variable same with for x in range(100). X is the variable. T.forward makes the length of each side. T.left 61 makes the degree of the angel in this case 61 is the degree. Then you will get a spiral. It is necessary to do the lines exactly the same. Please think about Python Programing classes. Alex Bastien Grade 4, Tenth Street School
Fencing Dear Editor, Imagine this, CLANK, CLANG, a sword fight between two super experienced fencers. One goes for the jab and wins the fight. There isn’t anywhere to do those types of things in this area. I’m thinking we need a place for fencing classes in Jasper, Indiana. Besides, the nearest fencing class is way out of town. You would have to drive for hours at a time just to go to the classes out of town. By the time you get there they could be finishing up, or already finished! So if we had one in Jasper, you wouldn’t have to drive the long drive between cities. Also, you know how kids are always on tablets and computers all the time. These fencing classes could help them get more active. Parents wouldn’t have to use money on a babysitter to take care of their kids. Babysitters are expensive, and fencing classes could be more fun for most kids. As my final reason, you probably saw it coming from a mile away. Kids could have fun! The ages could be for ages 10 and up so little kids don’t get hurt. Some kids love action, and stuff that gets your heart pumping. Jasper doesn’t have anything like that. If we built a place for fencing classes, those kids could get what they want! Malakai Fleming Grade 4, Tenth Street School
Window for food Dear Editor, Have you ever ordered from Los Bravos and you had to wait in a long line? Then, once you get there, your food is cold! Well, I know what you could do to make that change. Los Bravos could use a pick up window. You could pick up your food as soon as it’s ready. My first reason is that people don’t want to wait in line for a long time. Sometimes the parking lot is filled and then you can’t park anywhere. Then you have to wait for a car to leave so you can park. Most of the time, since their food is so good, lots of people are in line. Then when you finally get to the front of the line, your food is cold! If Los Bravos had a pick up window then I bet more people could pick up their food while it’s hot. So I really hope that Los Bravos gets a pick up window, because they need one. Kendyl Blackgrave Grade 4, Tenth Street School
Nature class on Riverwalk Dear Editor, Have you ever wondered why only people that jog go to the Riverwalk? Well I’m going to solve that problem. We should have nature classes. That will skyrocket the number of tourists at the river walk. Also it would bring the sales higher for renovation. You’re probably thinking kids won’t go because kids are on their gadgets and other things, but that’s why I came up with this idea. Kids should know about the world around them instead of being on their phones all day. They will learn about nature. Also this is a historic part of Jasper! Everyone should learn about how the first settlers lived. This is why I think we should have nature classes offered at the Riverwalk. Usman Jaffri Grade 4, Tenth Street School
Community garden Dear Editor, I think Jasper should have a community garden. I’m going to give you some reasons why Jasper should have a community garden. My first reason is when people want to buy flowers, they waste a lot of money on buying them. They also waste a lot a of time waiting for their flowers to grow. Another reason why Jasper should have a community garden is because when people want to see flowers they don’t see them. So they can go to their community garden and go see the flowers. Some other reason are because then Jasper can stay healthy and all the animals can also stay healthy too. Another reason why Jasper should have a community garden is because the garden could also have vegetables. And people won’t waste a lot of money on buying the vegetables. Another reason is because people could also see bees and butterflies in the garden drinking nectar from the flower. Also seeing them flying around in the flowers will make people really happy in the garden. That’s why I think Jasper should have community garden. Erika Escobedo Salais Grade 4, Tenth Street School

for him. He says he’s gonna make America great again and that’s a lie. If he becomes president, then it’d be like the Hunger Games basically. It will have 101% chaos! We will disgrace America. Trump just isn’t right. It’s just wrong that he would do those things. Outrageous! You might be wondering “What about Hillary Clinton?” Well, in my opinion I rather a different woman run for president than Hillary because I think she doesn’t know much about all of this. So take my advice and don’t vote for trump to ACTUALLY make America greater. Tammy Lam Grade 5, Tenth Street School
Dear Editor, I think that kids should be allowed to bring cell phones to school. Here are some of my reasons why. The first reason is that if there are any problems at school, then the kids have a way to contact their parents. Like if you drop off your kid at school and they get out of the car without grabbing their lunchbox or something or if they forget a library book or backpack, they will have a way to contact you, and you can bring it to them. Another reason is because if the school has a fire, then your kid will call you up and say, “Hey mom there’s a fire and you need to pick me up”. And then, you can pick them up so your child will not get hurt and will Dear Editor, be safe. I think Jasper needs a Target store. Here Another reason why kids should be al- are some reasons why. I know that many lowed to bring phones to school is that they people want a Target, so it would make a lot can download learning apps or games. And of money. I also think that it would bring they could learn more. And they can learn families to shop in Jasper. It could bring new things and get ahead in class. Everyone needs a dog
Dear Editor, I think that everybody should have a dog, and here are the reasons why. On the one hand, dogs give you companionship. On the other hand, dogs are great with children. On the third hand, dogs give you regular exercise. Here is one of the many reasons that dogs give you companionship. If you are lonely you have a best friend to help you out through tough times. In addition to giving you companionship is that dogs are good with children. Kids will (probably) play with the dog instead of being on their devices all day. There are some reasons why dogs will give you regular exercise. You will be running or walking your dog every day because dogs need exercise every day. BONUS: You will get healthy with your dog because dogs are usually dogs are really fast runners. WIN-WIN! Sydney Schmitt Grade 5, Tenth Street School
Pool in the gym Dear Editor, We should put a swimming pool in our school gym. It would be better for P.E. instead of running laps or miles, stretching oh and playing kickball, basketball, two square, and hockey for P.E.. It sucks. We should just swim for P.E. class. It would be way much more fun than regular P.E. class and everyone would probably agree with me. It would cause everyone to get dried off before they go to library, because they could get the chairs wet witch doesn’t matter if the chairs get wet, because they will dry by the air. It would also be relaxing and more fun. It would also be big but not to big to wear it is covering the hole gym. So maybe it could be like 1/2 of the gym. It would be awesome to have a pool in our school gym. Please agree to this. Alana Parr Grade 5, Tenth Street School
Running young Dear Editor, I think that all fifth graders should be allowed to participate in cross country. There is a lot of childhood obesity and letting 5th graders run in cross country would get kids more active at a younger age. A lot of other schools are allowing 5th graders to run in cross country. One of those schools includes Dubois. People who tend to start running at a younger age grow on running and enjoy doing it. Some people that never run say that they don’t like it without doing it. Tori Brandt Grade 5, Tenth Street School
No fan of Trump Dear Editor, I think that Donald Trump shouldn’t be president. He’ll stop gay rights and he’ll kick out immigrants. He is also gonna build a wall because so he says “Do you see any Mexicans in China after they built a wall? No.” It’s very idiodic that people are voting
Stop drugging Dear Editor, I think we absolutely need to stop this drugging! Just think about it if we didn’t have drugs our community would be a whole lot healthier. I think we should have people who help stop drugs. Andyn Lampert Grade 2, Ireland Elementary
Sky Zone Dear Editor, I think that it would be a great idea to have a Sky Zone in Jasper. It provides exercise for kids to stay moving. Plus there are no trampoline parks in Jasper and the closest Sky Zone is in Evansville. On bad weather days, people get bored and need something to do and if there is a Sky Zone in Jasper when people are bored they can go to Sky Zone. Cole Lampert Grade 2, Ireland Elementary
Book store Dear Editor, I think we need a book store and these are my reasons. So we can learn more about places we can go. It can help us learn more gigantic words. People won’t stay inside and play video games. Emily Kleiser Grade 2, Ireland Elementary
Krispy Kreme Dear Editor, I think that we need a Krispy Kreme because you can stop by before you go to work. Can’t you taste the warm and delicious bite just melt in your mouth? I think it would be a great thing to have. Max Bueltel Grade 2, Ireland Elementary
Animal killing Dear Editor, I want no more animal killing for sport. That’s a good idea because if people kill animals for fun the animals would be endanger of going extinct. That is what I want banned from Jasper. Aatrey Kulkarni Grade 2, Ireland Elementary
Sign autographs Dear Editor, I think it would be nice if Bo Jackson would come to Dubois County to sign autographs! It would make everyone happy especially huge fans like me! Since everybody would be happy everybody would be helpful and that would be great! Kids would be curious about Bo Jackson and would want to learn about Bo Jackson. So, they learn more! So, who’s in? Me! Mason Gegogeine Grade 3 Ireland Elementary
Lazy river Dear Editor, I think having a lazy river around the whole world would be awesome. That would be great because then you could see every place in the whole world. You can tell your tube where to go. This would also be great because if it is winter you could get the water hot. When it is summer, you could get the water cold. You could bring your homework with you. That’s why I want a lazy river. Taryn Truesdale Grade 3, Ireland Elementary
Apple Mac computers Dear Editor, I want us to have Apple Mac computers instead of desktop computers because I have a Mac and it loads faster and works better. We already have Apple minis and each teacher in the school has a smaller Apple computer, so we should have Mac’s. That’s why I think would make our school better. It would help us to learn better. Cortland Kizior Grade 3, Ireland Elementary
Pizza Dear Editor, I want the school to give out a different type of pizza. Some people type don’t like the type of pizza we have now. I don’t like the pizza. Mostly people bring their lunch on pizza days. Sometimes the pizza gets burnt and then the pepperoni doesn’t taste the same. That’s why I want a different kind of pizza. Sierrah Oddo Grade 3, Ireland Elementary
Bigger space Dear Editor, I think we should have a bigger Humane Society. So dogs and cats can have more space. So they get more exersize. They won’t get lonely. So they will be happy. That’s why I think we should have a bigger Humane Society. Mickinzie Marks Grade 3, Ireland Elementary
Bounce dodgeball Dear Editor, I think we should have a Sky Zone. I think we should have one because it is not fair that Evansville gets one. They get to play bounce dodgeball and we don’t. We can get more exercize if you have one. Too many kids are playing video games. Sky Zone is a fun way to exersize. We need a Sky Zone! Mitchel Harris Grade 3, Ireland Elementary
Lower taxes Dear Editor, I think we should lower the amount that you have to pay for taxes. I want this to happen because if someone wants to have an in ground pool they would have to pay a lot of money for it and all of the taxes. And after what they paid for the in ground pool and the taxes all together it would take a lot of money. Or if somebody gets a huge trampoline someone would pay a lot of money for it plus all of the taxes. And that is why I think we should lower everyone in the U.S.A.’s taxes. Addison Owens Grade 3, Ireland Elementary
Bullies Dear Editor, I believe there needs to be cameras inside of schools to see if there are bullies and to see if people get hurt. Jack Gamble Grade 3, Ireland Elementary
Fun house Dear Editor, I think we should replace one of Jasper’s banks with a big fun house! It will be so much fun. It will also be much better than a very super bank. We probably already have at least 20 banks here in Ireland and Jasper. All the children will love it and in the summer there will be a ton of teeny tiny water slides, bigger water slides and major water slides! Sounds amazing, right? Everyone will be able to ride a ride, so please remove
a bank. I hope you say yes! That will make everyone happy! Kenadie Lehane Grade 3, Ireland Elementary
Dog park Dear Editor, I think it is good that we have a dog park because dogs are getting more exercise and it make dogs healthier, more fit, and owners love that dogs are getting more exercise. Another reason I say that it is good that we have a dog park is that the dogs love the obstacles in the dog park and the owners of the dogs get amused by watching their dogs play on the obstacles. My last reason that is that dogs have more things to play with because we have dog parks and it gives them more chances to play with other dogs. Chloe Henke Grade 4, Ireland Elementary
Aquarium Dear Editor, I think that Jasper should add an aquarium. Here are some reasons why fish are amazing creatures. A lot of people like fish are amazing creatures. A lot of people like fish not to eat but to look at and learn more about. Not from the computer. In real person you can see it. I have a friend who loves dolphins. She would love my idea. You should too. I think that sea creatures are very amazing. I absolute love animals. I wish you could build an aquarium in Jasper. Maggie Sternberg Grade 4, Ireland Elementary
Playground size Dear Editor, I think the size of the playgrounds in Indiana should be extended. I believe that the bigger the playground the more fun people all over the world will have. I think if the o not have a walking trail, playgrounds should be installed for everyone’s parents. Parents need exercise like kids do. I think this is an opportunity to get kids to exercise more with bigger playgrounds. The parents would like watching their kids while active. I also think playgrounds should have snack machines. The snacks could be really healthy. This is why I think the size of playgrounds should be extended. Gavin Jochim Grade 4, Ireland Elementary
Class presidents Dear Editor, I think that elementary schools should have class presidents. I have three reasons why. One of my reason is kids should have the experience of voting in the classroom. Another reason is the candidates could experience some of the things real candidates do. My last reason is the kid who is picked could have fun with being class president. And my three examples are, when kids would vote in the classroom they would have fun, and you could change the class president every month if you wanted. My other example is the kids who are running for class president would have a chance to do what people who are running for the real president. My last reason is kids who get voted for could make good classroom rules but have to ask the teacher first like how real presidents add laws and talk with congress before they make them official. That is why I think elementary schools should have class presidents. Ella Robling Grade 4, Ireland Elementary
Hybrid or electric Dear Editor, I think that if you want cars then make hybrid or electric cars. We are using substance from deep in the earth called natural gas. When we run out of the natural gas what will we do? Go back to walking or using bicycles? No, so we need to make electric or hybrid cars. We make electricity so we don’t have to waste anything from earth. Imagine if the streets were clean instead of dirty streets, and have blue skies instead of gray cloudy skies. So that’s why I suggest more hybrid cars or electric cars. Yash Basra Grade 4, Ireland Elementary

Cure cancer
Benefits
No Starbucks
Dear Editor, Who out there wants to find a cure for cancer? Well I do. More and more people are dying because of cancer. People, even babies are dying and we need to stop it. A cure for cancer would be a great addition to the environment. Cancer is one of the most scariest diseases can have. People who have cancer are going from hospital to hospital. Try to get medicine to keep them from getting cancer. Over four million people are getting cancer each year and it is getting harder and harder for people to live after they had cancer, because they have used a lot of money going from place to place to try to find a cure. And if you have a certain cancer you will lose all of your hair. Sometimes that is really hard for people when they lose their hair. Like me, some people donate hair in this group named Lox of Love. You donate 8 to 15 inches of hair. They use this hair and use it for wigs. That is why I think we should find a cure for cancer. Paige Giesler Grade 4, Ireland Elementary
Dear Editor, Have kids ever thought about the benefits of playing outside? Playing outside will improve test scores. A scientist took two kids and told them to take test. One of them played an electronic for one hour. And the other played outside for an hour. The one that played outside got a better test score! 75 percent of studies say that normal playing time outside (60 minutes) helps. I believe playing outside more will improve kids vision and Vitamin D. Playing outside will for sure keep your kids healthy. Studies show that the average American child spends 44 hours a week on electronics. That is too much time sitting on the couch and playing an electronic. I hope parents and kids now know what playing outside could do for your body. Ian Bonifer Grade 5, Ireland Elementary
Dear Editor, People often complain about Jasper not having a Starbucks. Although Starbucks is an amazing business, there are good reasons for Jasper not to have one. Businesses such as Winklers, Libby’s, and McDonalds all have good coffee that sells regularly. If Starbucks came to Jasper, those businesses might slow down. After a while, they could possibly shut down. Another reason would be that when people from Jasper travel to places like Evansville, Owensboro, and Indianapolis, Starbucks won’t be as big of a treat or specialty to their trip. Mya Stiles Grade 6, Jasper Middle School
Libraries Dear Editor, I think that Jasper needs more libraries because video games are super big now that more electronics have come out. I think books are better for kids because they have more fun with them. Books also have better cliffhangers than video games. My favorite reason is books don’t run out of batteries, but video games run of batteries quick. That is why we need more libraries Landon Fleck Grade 4, Ireland Elementary
Vegetable shop Dear Editor, I think we should have a vegetable shop because we need fresh foods that come from gardens. You can buy all of your favorite foods at the vegetable shop. The vegetable shop should be open all day, every day. This shop would allow farmers to sell their crops anytime. Even neighbors should sell what they grow in their backyard. Healthy foods would support our community. Please bring a vegetable shop to Jasper. Ella Nelson Grade 4, Ireland Elementary
Hunting problems Dear Editor, I want to talk about the hunting problems in this state. Too many people are buying guns for more than just hunting. Our animal population is quickly going down. We need to stop hunting in Indiana. We only hunt for food not for fun. When an animals dies, our future does. We need to stop and say “Let’s stop hunting and save nature!” We need to stand up to the hunters and stop them from doing this. So please write and an ad or story about this and mother nature is saved. Ashton Howard Grade 4, Ireland Elementary
Best friends Dear Editor, Pets can be more than best friends. They make owners feel less afraid of being a victim of crime, make owners feel less lonely, and builds family bonds. With a pet you feel less lonely because you get the ease of human companionship. 97% of Couples that have recently broke up turn to their pets for companionship to feel less lonely because, pets considerably dogs, don’t talk back! When I’m feeling blue I talk to my dog. That isn’t unusual, right? Well on the other hand pets build spectacular family bonds. A pet builds family bonds by owners playing with him/her and doing it with your family. The emotional ties that owners and their families build with their pet may be somewhat helpful with everyone in the family. My parents were hesitant at first, but now they love Creamer. Feeling less afraid of being a victim of crime, feeling less lonely, and building a family bond is just the few reasons you should adopt a pet. Also they give a shoulder to cry on. Everybody cries on their dog, oui? Elyssa Hein Grade 5, Ireland Elementary
Indoor soccer Dear Editor, We need an indoor soccer facility because it is sometimes cold outside and we need to still practice so that is one reason. Another reason is a lot of people play soccer, so if something goes wrong outside the coach doesn’t have to cancel the practice. We can have a fundraiser to get money to get the indoor soccer facility. We would also get money for charity and to make it better. There reasons are why we need a indoor soccer field. Noah Pieper Grade 5, Ireland Elementary
Renovate buildings Dear Editor, I teamed up with a 5th grader named Makenzie and we both go to Ireland Elementary, but she has a different letter. I wrote this letter about a pressing issue that needs to happen immediately. I believe we should renovate all the torn up buildings in Jasper. First of all, Jasper is a beautiful place, and we shouldn’t ruin it by having old torn up buildings everywhere, and it’s especially atrocious that teens are just free to throw rocks through the windows and put graffiti on the walls. I find it outrageous that we just keep those buildings and don’t do anything about it. I think someone should put trees all around the riverwalk, because people are walking on the beautiful riverwalk, and then there’s an old ugly building right in your face. I suggest we renovate the buildings. Then people can have new stores, start businesses, and more people would move in because there is still plenty of room to turn them into apartments. I know what you are thinking, how to raise the money? Well here are ways to solve that problem. We could put donations outside important businesses and stores. When people walk by, they can see the sign with all the information. Then people can put donations in the box. We could also sell buttons and T-shirts to promote the cause. Please take some serious consideration into this matter. Hadley Rumbach Grade 5, Ireland Elementary
Animals need help Dear Editor, I would like to talk about something that needs to be done about the animals of Jasper. For a year on my birthday instead of presents, I asked my friends to bring dog or cat food to give to the Humane Society, and that is reason I am writing to you. I think, from what I’ve seen, that the Humane Society can use an upgrade for the following reasons. First of fall, from what I saw last time I was there I saw a cat that was missing an eye. That tells me animals have great surgical needs. Second, I’ve seen that they have to keep the dogs in separate kennels with stone walls so they can’t see other and some desperately want a companion to play with. Thirdly, many were originally unallowed a good home. My neighbor adopted a puppy that was found frozen to the owner’s driveway. Finally, many animals are in a confined area. There is an empty lot next to the Humane Society, but they don’t have enough money to buy some of it. I hope I put some light on the subject and helped raise money for the Humane Society. Mason W. Mauck Grade 5, Ireland Elementary
Something new Dear Editor, If I was in charge of Jasper I would make those old, broken-in factories into something new. Maybe, like a mall, sport center, or even a sky-zone. I think it would be fun to have it a mall because of gas you wouldn’t waste gas money and you wouldn’t waste time driving down to Evansville, Indianapolis or anywhere far away. I know you probably like the money for gas ,but you’re polluting the earth. You know how some people just drive their for one purpose. Jasper could probably roll in some extra cash. This could be an opportunity cause little towns next to us might come in just to shop there, go to sky-zone, or to go to the sports center. I know you’re probably thinking that they will waste gas coming here ,but if you think about it they won’t be wasting as much as driving to Evansville or Indianapolis or somewhere else. If it was a sports center, people could lose weight. Sorry, if you think i’m insulting you ,but if you think about it, it’s true. It could be a way that people in this town lose weight and get involved and interact with other people outside your social circle. I’m not saying that you don’t ,but for some people they are on their phones, computers, ipads, and other devices that distract them from life. I know some people that are reading this are probably disagreeing with me ,but you should just think about how many people would love a gym, a mall, or even having fun at sky-zone. Don’t think i’m weird just for having ideas, think about how much money it would roll-in and it wouldn’t pollute the air as much. It’s fun to have a mall, but on other people’s minds they spend too much and don’t like to go to those places. You don’t have to turn all the old broken-in factories to sky-zone or a mall or a sports center ,but what i’m saying is that it would be good for this environment to have something new. It’s not like i’m the only one either it’s just that other people want this too and can’t do anything about it. I want jasper to be a happy place where people live and just have fun in their own way. This is why I am writing you this letter to maybe change your mind. Jayden Pfister Grade 6, Jasper Middle School
Keep firearms Dear Editor, Hunting brought in more revenue (38.3 billion) than Google (37.9). So why would get rid of our most useful tool, our rifles? Many people are trying to get rid of all our firearms. Stop trying to take them away people! They can be safe, a useful tool, and for self defense. The biggest thing to worry about when dealing with firearms is safty, and instead of getting rid of all of our rifles we just need to have more background checks on the people buying them. Firearms manufacturers have even came out with many new systems for the safeties on firearms. People should also have to attend the hunters safety course if them want to purchase a firearm. Hunters use a firearm on average about 21 days out of the year. These firearms are the most efficient tool in a average hunter’s arsenal. They put down animals without them suffering, and you don’t want to see an animal suffer. The average hunter uses a rifle or even a bow, but most hunters wouldn’t want to change or give up their rifle. Firearms are not only hunting tools but also a self defense weapon. Self defense is the act of carrying a weapon for your own protection. This can save many lives and has before. Think if there was an armed policeman in Columbine. There would be a
lot less deaths. Yes, guns do cause many deaths, but if we ban guns the bad guys are still going to get them just from somewhere else. It’s one thing to ban assault rifles, but all firearms. Look at how many people have or use hunting rifles. That number would be close to zero. In conclusion, I think that taking away firearms would hurt us and our economy even worse. Look at how much money it brings in. Firearms is even apart of our culture, and apart of many American’s favorite pastime. You know that the bad guys are going to still get their weapons from somewhere else. Don’t you think, too? Kaleb Werner Grade 7, Jasper Middle School
Shabby textbooks Dear Editor, The education system in the United States needs improvement from its old, worn out, shabby textbooks. Many nations around the world today are using technology such as laptops and other devices to help children, adolescents, and adults learn essential skills for the future. Jasper could be one of the first communities nationwide to have schools in the region using laptops or other form of computer for educational purposes. Computers provide many benefits that books can’t provide, such as current information. Textbooks are fine for teaching students, but books can wear and tear after years pass. Computers however, last for awhile. Not only this, but computers weigh much less than the 3 or 4 textbooks children have to carry home. Also, textbooks become outdated, and their informational text has become useless in today’s society, but with the click of a button, an online textbook can be updated every year. Additionally, children get more connected and in touch with technology every year, so the metamorphosis from textbooks to computers wouldn’t be difficult for children to get use to. Computers would also be a quicker way to find research and other data for classes. Computers are the best way to help the next generation succeed. Computers are the future of mankind. They help us do research, communicate, do business transactions, as well as many other activities. The sooner we all learn how technology works, the quicker we become to being a modern city. In conclusion Jasper, as well as many other cities should allow computers in school for educational uses. Riley Abell Grade 8, Jasper Middle School
Year-round school Dear Editor, Most students and parents cringe when they hear about year-round school. Their minds jump to the idea of them being locked in school all year, with a shorter summer break. However, in reality this is not at all how year-round school functions. I believe year-round school would be a good idea for the school system to adopt. Many people are fooled by the phrase “Year-round”. You are not actually going to school every weekday, all year. You are still going only 180 days. The only thing that really changes is the time you get off for holidays and breaks. The summer break gets a little shorter but all the holiday breaks get longer. Although people love summer break, including me, it would help to have a shorter one. If you have a shorter summer break then you won’t forget as much information as you would with a long break. In conclusion I think that year-round school is worth giving a try. Not only will it help your education, it will also allow you to rest from all your hard work. Many schools have switched to this system and said that they saw some major improvements. And I think we all would like to see improvements also. Reagan Egbert Grade 8, Jasper Middle School
Phones take over Dear Editor, I have come to realize that iPhones have taken over teens lives. This may seem like an exaggeration, but it actually is not. In this day and age, if you want to get a hold of someone, you have no option but to text Letters continue on Page 13

or call them. And half the time they will not pick up their phone so you skip leaving a message and go straight to texting them so they will see it later. I have had to go without my phone countless times, mainly for getting grounded from it. Each time I have gotten my phone taken away, it has been hard for me to go without it (as I said earlier, it is the main source of communication nowadays.) When I discovered how hard it was for me to go without my phone, I was disappointed. There is no reason for us teenagers to have to have a little gadget with us 24/7. We should be able to walk up to the people we want to contact and hold a conversation without hiding behind a screen. The phrase “hiding behind a screen” basically describes our generation. With our phones, we have gotten to where everything we say is most likely anonymous and something that we would never dream of saying to their face. I would bet that bullying now is much worse than it ever has been because of all the different ways it could occur. Also, our obesity rate in America is unbelievably high, and technology is to blame. When there was no video games or social media, kids had no option but to go outside and talk to their peers face to face. Teens need to be encouraged to get out more and communicate in real life. Just a nice balance between the amount you did and did not have your device would make a tremendous change in the way our generation operated. Patrick Harmon Grade 8, Jasper Middle School
Prepare for ISTEP Dear Editor, “Okay class it’s time to get out our fifth packet to prepare for ISTEP,” our teacher said. All we ever do is prepare for ISTEP the whole year. We do reports, essays, and tests over skills that may or may not be on ISTEP. It seems like everything we do is for ISTEP. I think we should not do ISTEP because it is unfair, confusing, and overwhelming. Since the ISTEP is confusing some kids do not understand the directions. Sometimes the questions are confusing and students may do the wrong thing. They may say things such as choose all of the following that apply. Also the questions are misworded. Who uses straws to measure a house? ISTEP can be unfair in many ways. Teachers are graded on how well students do. In theory students could all fail the test to get their teacher fired. Another thing is schools are graded on it. New families may go to not as good schools, just because they scored better on the ISTEP. The biggest test of the year is overwhelming to teachers and students. Teachers can get stressed out and accomplish less than they intended. Some students try to make it organized, but do not even finish the test because of the time limit. It is also unfair because we spend our whole year of learning on two or three questions. Now I know people think this helps see where schools are. In reality it is not very accurate. When using inaccurate material you cannot tell where schools are really at.`` In conclusion ISTEP is confusing, unfair, and overwhelming. So what do you think? Should we take the ISTEP? Nick Buechlein Grade 7, Jasper Middle School
Deforestation Dear Editor, Trees are the longest living organisms on the planet and on of the earth’s greatest natural resources. They keep our air supply clean, reduce noise pollution, and improve water quality that’s why people need to stop deforestation because if it keeps happening there would be no rainforests, species would become extinct, and the climate could change. Deforestation occurs around the world, although tropical rainforests are particularly targeted. In the amazon forest around 17% of the forest has been lost in the last 50 years mostly due to forest conversion for cattle ranching. The world’s rainforests could completely vanish in a hundred years at the current rate of deforestation. Forest cover 31% of the land of the world’s most threatened and endangered animals live in the forests, and 16 billion people rely on benefits forests offer. But forests around the world are under threat from deforestation is jeopardizing these benefits.
NIE ■ PAGE 13
Deforestation is considered to be one of the contributing factors to global climate change. Deforestation has decreased global vapor flows from land 4 percent. Even this slight change in vapor flows can disrupt natural weather patterns and change current climate models. Forests are cut down for many reasons, but most of them are related to money or people’s need to provide more room for their families. It’s not good for the enviroment. Many believe that to counter deforestation, people simply need to plant more trees. Though a massive replanting effort would help to alleviate the problems deforestation caused, it would not solve them all. Leslye Soto Grade 7, Jasper Middle School
Namaste Dear Editor, Namaste, hola, marhabaan. That meant hello in Hindi, Spanish, and Arabic. Most people wouldn’t know that because there aren’t that many cultural centers. I think that there should be more cultural centers because it would let us taste other foods, we could probably learn some of other languages, and know more about other countries. Instead of having a lot of centers of our culture, we should have more cultural centers because it would let us taste other foods. Studies show that people who engage in a variety of experiences are more likely to retain positive emotions and minimize negative ones than people who have fewer experiences. So just try new things to be in a positive mood and if you dont like the food then just don’t eat and try something else. Studies also says that you should eat a variety of foods for nutrients and protien. That is just one reason why we need more cultural centers. Even though we have some cultural centers, we need more because we could learn some words of other languages. Studies show that one of the benefits of learning a language is that it benefits understanding and security in community and society. I know it’s some words, but it could still help you talk and understand the people who are working at that center. Also if you want to learn the language fully then it would be a bigger benefit on you. That’s the second reason why we should have more cultural centers. Once we have more cultural centers, we could learn more about foreign countries and also their history. We could learn more about their country and about it’s history if there more cultural centers because the centers don’t just have to be restraunts, they could also be museums and stores. We could know more about their country’s life style and clothes that they wear. Now some people could say that what if we don’t want to learn their language or what if we don’t want to eat their food or learn about their country. Then to them I say, “Why wouldn’t you want to learn about a different culture totally different from ours, and see how their life style is a lot different from here and their religion. Tech trouble Dear Editor, “MOM! My 2in1 isn’t working again,” I scream as I furiously pound on the keys. I pick up the Unobook in disgust as I carry it to my mom to see if she can help me. “Jace, I don’t know what to tell you,” she said, as she sighs sitting down on the couch. I look at the clock and see that it is way past my bedtime so I give it up. As I climb into bed, I pray to the Lord that the teacher will understand what will happen and won’t punish me. The next morning, I walk around nervously as the class I couldn’t get the homework done nears. It is time for class and the first thing the teacher Mrs. Jolie says is, “Ok class get out your 2in1’s and pull up your homework. I walk briskly to the teacher’s desk and pull up the 2in1 and start explaining what went wrong. “Mrs. Jolie my 2in1 didn’t work last night so I couldn’t get the homework done,” I mutter quickly. She asks me what’s wrong and I start to show her when everything works perfectly. “Jace you better get everything organized for eLearning day,” Aw the wretched eLearning day were 2in1’s don’t work, kids take days off, and we don’t know how to turn things in the right way.
The first issue with the eLearning day is that the 2in1’s don’t work. Every class there is at least one or two people that either do not have their 2in1 or it’s broke somehow Also at the end of each day the office calls down students to pick up their 2in1 and the list gets pretty lengthy. Not only is that an issue but also the other issue is that kids will take the day off. There is always some people in every school that doesn’t get their homework done and Jasper is not an exception. Another thing is that for the eLearning day is if you don’t turn your homework in you’ll be counted as absent and I am afraid that people will just want to be counted absent. The third issue is that we do not know how to turn things in properly on Canvas. People try to turn their assignments in other places like sharing it, emailing it, and printing it out instead of using Canvas. My last additional point is that even Canvas does not work sometime and it is just really frustrating. Sure the teachers can use the eLearning days as like Professional Development days and still have the students go to school, and kill two birds with one stone. Teachers can do that in the summer or put in a hour of development after school and still let the kids come to school. ELearning day goes good for me no issues and I turn everything in. I still think that eLearning day will be a grave mistake and that it will be our first and our last time using the computers as a school. Jace Goodhue Grade 7, Jasper Middle School
Parklands Dear Editor, Your family arrives at the place you’ve been eagerly awaiting for weeks. You rush to the fishing pond while your parents start to walk the trails. Your brother goes to the gym area to work out. Your sister walks to the wildlife learning station to see some animals and learn about them. Imagine being able to do all this in the new Jasper Parklands. The new Parklands will help citizens become active, it will help them learn about wildlife, and it will give the public a way to fish locally. There will be a variety of ways to exercise at the new Jasper Parklands. At the Parklands, there will be gym equipment for public use. There will also be paths for bikers and walkers to enjoy. Open, grassy areas in the park will provide kids with places to play games such as kickball and tag. Also, in the Parklands, there will be playgrounds and jungle gyms for kids to climb on. For these reasons, I believe the new Jasper Parklands will be a great way to exercise in Jasper. Not only will the new Jasper Parklands have great ways to exercise, but it will also have wildlife learning options for the public. It will have centers to teach the public about nature. It will also have different environments such as wetlands in some parts. The new Jasper Parklands will teach people about the world they live in, including all the wildlife. The new Jasper Parklands will teach individuals about fishing and filleting their catch. Visitors can fish in all three of the lakes. They will be able to have a fresh alternative to gross fish sticks. The new ponds will be a great way to let individuals have a great fishing time and a sustainable meal. Many people say that the new Parklands will be too expensive for the town of Jasper, however it is worth it. The funds will be transferred from a fund used for projects in Jasper, so Jasper citizens will not have to pay extra taxes. This is why The new Parklands are not expensive, rather pre-planned. In conclusion, Jasper will benefit greatly from the new Parklands. They can exercise, learn about wildlife, and learn to fish and have a way to have fresh fish. More clubs Dear Editor, I am walking down the hall when I notice bright signs with bold words. I look at them and realize, these are no ordinary stop signs, they are clubs and extracurriculars. Then I look, and there aren’t enough! Jasper Middle School needs to include and offer more extracurricular activities and clubs like: a JMS Baseball Team, we need more clubs, and JMS needs to fill the want of activities from the students. JMS needs to offer not only more sports teams such as:
a JMS Baseball Team, or a JMS Boys Volleyball Team. It is proven that kids who play team and school sports are less likely to feel isolated from others. Also, it is said that team sports in schools help the students bond with the teammates, build reliability, and improve their responsibility. Creating this team would represent JMS better and give students a good way to get exercise. Because Jasper Middle School has a growing number of students, they need to set up more events and clubs. According to a top rated site, “Clubs and activities help kids get to know others, socialize with peers, and make long-lasting friendships. Also, after school activities with a group or club instills a sense of belonging. Clubs have proven that they can also create sparks in interest among the students and get their brains to use the other side. JMS has a list of wonderful people and students and many of them have popping ideas, they need more opportunities for an after school activity. By having supervised after school activities, it gives students a better choice on what to do. Also, by having kids in school until their parents get them can help students stay out of trouble and keep them on the right track to a healthy life. As stated by The New York Times, “Having after school activities fills students minds with good thoughts and keeps from anxiety or environmental problems. One thing that may be hard to do for programs like these, would be finding volunteers or supervisors for the activities. This may be a hassle finding people, but our community is filled with great people who wouldn’t mind taking some of their time on certain days to help kids and give them something fun to do. In conclusion, I believe Jasper Middle School needs to offer more after school activities, clubs, and sports teams. I think this because it will keep kids out of trouble with the law, represent JMS talents, and give students an opportunity to express their ideas and get to know other people they can be friends with for their whole life. Gender inequality Dear Editor, “Remember the good old days when girls fought to be equal, not superior? Boys aren’t better than girls. Girls aren’t better than boys.” Gender inequality is something that is very serious, but some main problem areas of discrimination are more people show up to boys’ games than girls’, girls should get the same amount of money during their jobs, and boys think that they are better and smarter than any girl. Even though girls work as hard as boys, the boys bring in more fans than girls, therefore boys think that they are better than girls. One representative for University of Connecticut (UCONN) said, “But, in the opening games of the 2011-2012 seasons, the men’s game drew in 10,167 fans whereas the women’s game, just two days later, played host to only 6,548.” The women’s games broadcasting had dropped from 6.3% to 1.6% (college.usatoday). “A whole new generation of women and girls are talking about equality-equal pay.” wrote Meryl Streep. Most men go into a building field while women go into teaching or nursing. For the top four jobs, there is a 2.5% difference in pays. In the top three jobs of men, only 10% of the jobs are women’s. Because boys think they are everything and the world revolves around them, they think that girls can’t do anything that they can. “Guys think that they are better than girls cause they are boneheads. Not all of them, just the ones who think they are better than girls.” Boys think if they like a sport, then everyone has to like it, no matter who they are. Thinking that they are everything, boys don’t pay attention to anyone except themselves. Yes, there are some things guys are better at than girls. Men are better at getting ready, quick shopping, aging, figuring how things work, and football fanaticism. According to some credible sources, girls learn better, are cleaner, mature faster, graduate more often, and survive more car accidents than boys. Girls survive over 70% of car crashes. These points show how easily girls can and should be treated equal to boys. Ava Nobitt Grade 7, Jasper Middle School

Place to exercise Dear Editor, I think we need a sports center so that everyone can exercise. First, a sports center would make everyone strong. Next, it would make everyone bigger. Then, it would make everyone healthy. The best part about a sport center would be wrestling there. Mason Bower Grade 1, Holy Trinity School
More ice cream Dear Editor, I think that we should eat more ice cream. I like ice cream. It is yummy yummy. I like chocolate ice cream. What is your favorite ice cream? I bet you like ice cream but if you don’t it’s ok. Grant Gehlhausen Grade 1, Holy Trinity School
Flipping over turtles Dear Editor, I think people should have pet turtles. They’re super cute. A turtle cannot flip over unless you can see them and flip them back over. Turtles cannot hurt you unless it is a snapping turtle. No one can have snapping turtles as a pet. No one can resist the cuteness of turtles. They are so cute and so slow. Turtles only eat leaves and sometimes bugs. I love turtles! Wren Mehringer Grade 1, Holy Trinity School
Get organic Dear Editor, Do you like organic food? Well, I do. I think there should be more organic food. There should be some at restaurants everywhere. People eat the food that is not healthy but if you eat a little bit it won’t hurt. The best part about organic food is that you stay healthy. Myah Troutman Grade 1, Holy Trinity School
Donkey Kong Dear Editor, Do you have Donkey Kong 64? My mom has it. She will let me play it when she is done with it. She is stuck on Hide-Out Helm. She needs a Donkey Kong coin. She needs to beat the original Donkey Kong to get the coin and save the Donkey Kongs. The best part about Donkey Kong 64 is the levels are creepy and fun. People waste water by leaving the sink on when you brush your teeth. There are people in different countries that can’t get water. We should help give water to the rest of the world instead of wasting it! Caden Erny Grade 3, Holy Trinity School

Dear Editor, I have a plan. I am going to start a giving garden! There are going to be cucumbers and other vegetables. People will need a membership. The garden will be at Holy Trinity Central Campus. The people who get memberships will grow the food. People can take the vegetables home when they are ripe, if they want to. Dear Editor, I want to ask to please help the poor. The poor have no home, no food, and no clothes. They are the ones that mainly need the help because there is also poor women that are moms and they need that extra help to feed and dress their children because no children should be suffering poverty when you can give them the help. This is why we should help the poor. Alina Hernandez Grade 3, Holy Trinity School

Dear Editor, In the world, I think people should be more giving to the homeless people. They should give them money. Eli Rasche Grade 1, Holy Trinity Catholic School
Dear Editor, I am deeply concerned with our local animals. In the African rainforest, Americans are cutting down trees and animals are losing their homes. What would happen if this happened to our country? Probly something very bad. How long till this happens to our country? It already is happening. People are littering. Oil is filling the ocean. What would happen if one day, animals just disappeared? What would people do then? Animals are a big part of our lives. We hunt them and use them for food. We breed animals to become pets. I hope this letter makes it in to the news to inspire others to stop cutting down trees. Ava Claire Werne Grade 2, Holy Trinity School
Dear Editor, Provide dogs with food, water, shelter, and affection. They will think you are good. Provide cats with food, water, shelter, and affection, and they will draw the conclusion that THEY are good. I want more people to adopt animals from the Dubois County Humane Society. First of all, it’s sad to see all of the animals in the Humane Society with no home. There’s no difference between the animals at the Humane Society and animals that you can buy at a pet store. Secondly, I’m tired of people not adopting animals at the Humane Society just because of their problems. Just because they have disabilities or not great looks doesn’t mean they’re not the same as other animals. Finally, I think everybody should care about these animals. It seems like all of the other animals have a home, but the animals in the Humane Society still need one. Please adopt at the Humane Society! Ava Rees Grade 3, Holy Trinity School

It just makes me sad or scared because of the baby fish that were just born. Davis Wuchner Grade 3, Holy Trinity School

Dear Editor, I wish the Public Library was bigger. I also wish that the Riverwalk was more clean because there is trash. The trash isn’t good for our community. Olivia Helming Grade 2, Holy Trinity School
Dear Editor, I do not like taxes, because whenever I want to get a toy or something my mom and dad ask how much money the item is. When I say how much money the item is, and my mom and dad add the taxes, sometimes they say yes and sometimes they say no. Taxes make things cost too much money. Dear Editor, I think that people should stop littering. Two years ago me, my brothers, and my dad got a whole trailer full of trash. Last year at the clean sweep my 4-H club does, we picked up a lot of bags of trash. A lot of people are throwing trash in my yard and other people’s fields. Some people act as if the Earth is a trash can. Hopefully people will help clean our community and then keep it clean. Everyone needs to stop littering. Grace Kluemper Grade 3, Holy Trinity School

Read, read, read Dear Editor, “You’ll never get anywhere what-iffing like that.” –Roald Dahl I think we should all read 5 minutes before school every day together as a class. We tried once before we started to work, and it worked! We were wound up before recess, but after recess we read for 5-10 minutes. After we read, we were very quiet! Reading helps you grow! For example: If you don’t read over the summer, your reading level could drop. This is because you don’t practice. Reading helps your imagination. When we read, our brains translate the descriptions we read of people, places, and things into pictures in our minds. So please, editor, talk to teachers about this! Addison Schnell Grade 3, Holy Trinity School
Poor diets Dear Editor, Excessively poor diets can lead to Type2 Diabetes! I think people should have healthier foods and drinks to eat. First of all, people cannot live their lives if they can’t move around easily because they are too obese, too tired, and not full of energy. These things are the effects of unhealthy foods and drinks. Secondly, unhealthy food can make you very ill. There are various illnesses that you can get from unhealthy foods and drinks like Osteoporosis, Heart Disease, strokes, tooth decay, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and some Cancers. Eating and drinking unhealthy foods can lead to extreme obesity! I don’t think that you want to be outrageously obese. Do you? Obesity and unhealthy economy still blights the lives of more than a billion people in the world. I hope that you now understand how much unhealthy foods and drinks effect our lives and why we should eat healthier! Isabella Harmon Grade 3, Holy Trinity School

Super power Dear Editor, Cigarette smoking kills more than 480,000 Americans each year, with more than 41,000 of these deaths from exposure to second hand smoke. If I had a super power to stop people from smoking, then I would totally use it! You shouldn’t smoke because it can lead to deadly diseases. Some of the worst diseases caused by smoking are Lung Cancer, Heart Disease, Asthma, and going blind. More people die from Lung Cancer than any other types of Cancer. Smoking harms almost every organ in your body including your heart. Asthma is a chronic lung disease that makes it harder to breathe. Smoking also damages your eyes and can result in vision loss. Another reason you shouldn’t smoke is that it is against the law if you are under eighteen. You will get in big trouble, and you might even go to jail for smoking under the age of eighteen. The final reason you shouldn’t smoke is that people around the smoker can get second hand smoke. Second hand smoke is just as bad as smoking. You can die even by breathing it in. You can make somebody’s wonderful life come to an end for something you’ve done. These are my reasons why you shouldn’t smoke. CC Hanneman Grade 3, Holy Trinity School
Too much bullying Dear Editor, I think too many kids are being bullied at school and at other places such as parks and neighborhoods. We should all communicate and work together as an amazing team. We have our differences, but we can talk about them and find solutions to any issue. Kids who do bully are hurting other kids. We should not make fun of other kids that is why everyone is different. We should respect everyone just the same. Have you ever been bullied? I have not and I do not know why other kids bully. I am asking everyone please do not bully. Thanks! Caroline Kieffner Grade 4, Holy Trinity School
No need for speed Dear Editor, Today, I was sitting on my front porch watching the cars speed down our street. I think there should be more stop signs for several reasons. One, it can prevent people from crashing. Two, it slows down traffic to a reasonable speed. This would make driving safer. Finally, stop signs allow roads to cross over each other, and they help pedestrians cross roads. It is easy to see that stop signs are important and needed for our safety. Madeleine Buchanan Grade 4, Holy Trinity School
Lower prices Dear Editor, I think that drinks, such as Gatorade and soda, should be at lower prices at concession stands. At East Campus drinks are $1.75 at basketball games. They should be at lower prices, first of all so more people would buy them. What is more, four people buying a one dollar soda, or two people buying a 1.75 soda? Four people buying a one dollar soda. I think a lot of people would prefer one dollar drinks. Second of all, some people like to pay in exact change. It is kind of annoying to pay a $1.75 in exact change. If you pay $2.00 dollars you only get a quarter back. If the drinks would be a $1.00, you would save $1.00 to maybe buy another one. Everyone would love that! That is why drink prices should go down. Soda machine’s soda are a $1.00. Why not at the concession stands? Really, come on! Nicholas Stratton Grade 4, Holy Trinity School
CPR training Dear Editor, People should get CPR training to help other. It’s not fun to think about emergencies because we hope it will never happen, but you should be prepared. trained. When you are trained in CPR you learn how to respond effectively in emergencies. People can save someone’s life by learning CPR. It’s easy to learn. CPR saved more than 300,000 people last year. Contact American Heart Association or your local hospital for more details. You might be able to save a life and it is likely to be a loved one! Dear Editor, In Jasper we desperately need hiking trails. My 1st reason is people are not enjoying nature enough. My 2nd reason is people are not getting enough exercise. We need hiking trails. If people knew the beautiful nature that we have in Jasper they would constantly be out there. We have beautiful nice trees. All you have to do is cutout a couple trees and voila! My next reason is that people are not getting enough physical exercise. Physical exercise is important because without physical exercise people die. When people die Jaspers population goes down and no one wants Jaspers population to go down. Both of these reasons are why we need hiking trails. We have the money because you’re spending 4 million on a park. We have the room. Let’s do it! Leo Eckman Grade 4, Holy Trinity School
Dear Editor, Ugh, who wants to go to walk the River Walk with Jasper Cabinet there? This is what people will say if Jasper Cabinet stays. We should tear it down because it is dilapidated, and it could be something entirely new. To begin with, Jasper Cabinet is dilapidated. The windows are broken so rain can get in and mold can grow. Also it is by the train stations so it could collapse on the building. When I went in it 5 years ago, every step you took it would creak; think how worse it is today. What if it would collapse on someone today? Another reason why you should tear down Jasper Cabinet is because it could be something new. You could change it into a hotel and make it into a park so when the River Walk park floods people could use that one. In addition, you could make it an extension of Memorial Hospital so the wait lines won’t be so long. The possibilities are endless! In conclusion, think of these reasons why you should tear down Jasper Cabinet. Also for the safety of your citizens. Drew Clauss Grade 5, Holy Trinity School
Teach us politics
Arts leads to friends
Dear Editor Only 3 out of 22 5th graders at Holy Trinity School know the first thing about politics. Offering courses about politics would encourage kids to vote when they turn 18, and let them form their own opinions, so Jasper should do just that if they wish for that outcome. Voting is a privilege, a privilege not all Americans acknowledge. Many do this because they are uneducated political-wise. Offering courses about politics would educate them, and they would hopefully vote in the future. Many children are influenced by their parents and churches. They aren’t aware of what each politician stands for, only that so-and-so likes them. Offering the courses would also help in that area. The courses would benefit everyone. he city of Jasper should do this for the people. Abby Kidwell Grade 5, Holy Trinity School
Dear Editor, Did you know being in a play is a great way to make friends? There are many plays in the U.S., like Cinderella and many more. Plays can help you make new friends and to gain more knowledge on different topics. If you are in a play you meet more people. After you get to know them, you get to have a lot of fun. With new friends you can enjoy the play even more. Plays are a great way to have lots of fun and meet new friends to hang out with. Your new friend can be even at your school. You can practice and get to know more people at school. With all these new friends you can do a lot of new things that you and your friend like. If you are in a play you can gain more knowledge on different topics. You can learn how to act as different characters. Also, sometimes there are songs, so with practice you can have a better voice. Doing different plays you learn different stories each time. After you are in a play you learn what the story is about. Each story has different acting jobs. You can see what your character feels in the story, and you get to become that character. Now you see, you should really want to be in a play. I think it would be great if there were more theaters, so more plays could happen. Please consider being in a play. You might find that you really like it! Ella Wolf Grade 6, Holy Trinity School

Cancer monument Dear Editor Wow! That’s what the citizens of Jasper would say if you put a monument for the victims of cancer. You should build a monument for the victims of cancer because, the citizens of Jasper would enjoy, and it might convince scientists to work harder on the cure. The citizens of Jasper would enjoy it. 21 out of 22 students in my class would love to see the monument, and only 6 of them have friends or family who are victims of cancer; that’s just my class! Scientists might be motivated to work harder to find the cure. If they see all the people who have died of cancer, they will be encouraged to work harder to find the cure. I hope you consider this letter, because we really do need a monument for the victims of cancer in Jasper. Jake Weinzapfel Grade 5, Holy Trinity School
Seat belts in the bus Dear Editor Ouch! That is the sound of an adult or a kid falling into the aisle of a bus. You should put seat belts in busses because nobody will get out of their seats and less adults and children will get hurt. My first reason is nobody will get out of their seats. You will know if anybody takes off their seatbelt because they would be walking around. Also, when kids are in their seats drivers will be less distracted. Another reason why you should have seatbelts in busses is because less adults and children will get hurt. Even adults are getting hurt because of the bumpy rides, they fall into the aisle. The same goes for children. In conclusion, you should put seatbelts in busses. It will make our community a
Cycling paths Dear Editor, Do you think bikers should use bike paths? If people use bike paths they don’t get hit by cars as much as if they were on roads. Less people would get hit by cars. People should always use the bike paths because of safety reasons and the paths are well maintained and nice. People need to use bike paths because of safety reasons. Some safety reasons are so you don’t get hit by cars, or don’t take up space on the roads. If you use bike paths you have less chances of getting hit by a car. And if you ride on bike paths you don’t take up space on the road. If you use bike paths children are much safer than riding on the road. If you use the bike paths you will be much safer. The bike paths are still relatively new. We have only had the bike paths for a few years. Not too many people use them. The paths don’t have cracks and they are much smoother than roads. Usually the people that use bike paths are walkers and runners. And bikers and runners go at different speeds so they don’t have to worry about taking up space. This is why I think people should use the relatively new bike paths. This is why I think bikers should use the bike paths. Grace Main Grade 6, Holy Trinity School
Football on turf Dear Editor, Turf or grass? That is the big debate about the JHS Football Field. Well, Jasper doesn’t know if they should play on turf. I think the football players in Jasper should play on turf instead of grass. Turf has many good qualities including that the players will play better and the field will look better. I feel that the players will play better on turf instead of grass because when you play on grass and it is raining, a lot of holes begin to form in the grass. While in turf, holes don’t form as much as in grass. Also I think turf is better because when the grass is wet, you can slip really easily and on turf you don’t slip a lot. Another reason I think turf is better is that you can run and jump better on turf. Finally, I think turf is better for the JHS football field instead of grass because the Jasper High School football players can practice and play games better on turf instead of grass. I feel that the JHS football field will look better in turf instead of grass. Also I feel that turf will bring in more fans to the football games. Also I think will look better because turf always looks brand new, while grass looks really bad. Finally turf looks better than grass when it rains; the turf will look the same and stay in good shape. Will Dart Grade 6, Holy Trinity School
Get some sleep Dear Editor, According to the National Sleep Foundation, adolescents need around 8½ to 9¼ hours of sleep each night. I think that the best way to ensure that they are getting the amount of sleep they need is by starting school later than usual. Both middle schools and high schools should start school an hour later than they normally start to alleviate the problem of teen and adolescent sleep deprivation. Research says that the average teenager only gets 7 to 7¼ hours of sleep each night. If teenagers were able to get more sleep, this could lead to a greater level of focus. At school, students are tired and cannot think clearly early in the morning. If school was able to start later, than students would be more focused and ready to learn. This increase of focus can lead to improved grades. Sleep deprivation can also lead to drowsiness while driving. The majority of fatiguerelated crashes are caused by drivers under age 25, as stated by Teen Driver Source. If schools were to start later, teenagers driving to school would be less drowsy and more focused on the road. As you can see, starting school later would create many benefits for teenage students. When students are not tired, they are focused. If students are more focused, I think that their grades could improve, and everyone wants their kids to do well in school. Addison Clauss Grade 7, Holy Trinity School
Negative news Dear Editor, Nowadays there are a lot of bad things on the news. Although it’s good to see the troubles in the world we need some good things to make us feel happy too. The bad is causing bad things to happen a lot more now. This needs to change!!! If you go on TV and go to the news channel, you’ll just see stuff like another school shooting, house burned down, or man arrested for murder. What happened to “boy saved from burning building”, or “courageous man from moving vehicle”? I just don’t understand why everything is so negative. This is not how us people should be. We should be happy and look at all of the good things happening. If we did that then the world would be a much happier place. All of the negative things on TV are causing people to think negatively. When they think negatively then they start to act negatively. When they act negatively, things like shootings and murders happen. There is 1 murder every 32 minutes. That’s roughly 16,000 murders each year. That’s ridiculous. If the news was more positive then people would have a reason to be positive. The way that the news is now, people have no reason to be happy. Please think about this. Colin Luebbehusen Grade 8, Holy Trinity School Letters continue on Page 21

This is a real story I am going to tell you. When I was at my grandmother’s house I was playing in the backyard. There was a pit. I went to the pit and fell in. I yelled for help. If there’s trash in the ocean it would kill the plants and animals in the ocean. Littering is against the law. Jay Humbert Grade 3, Huntingburg Elementary
Lungs get hurt Dear Editor, I think people need to stop smoking because it hurts your lungs. It can give you cancer and you can die and then people will be sad. And it also hurts animals. For example say you are smoking by a dog then they breathe it in so it’s like they’re smoking too and it hurts them and they can die. So stop smoking! Elizabeth Cruz Grade 3, Huntingburg Elementary
Not fair Dear Editor, My parents can’t vote because we live out of city limits. I think it’s not fair because not everybody gets to vote. I want my parents to vote so they can pick who they want. I want all people who live out of city limits to vote for who they want. The people that don’t live out of city limits gets to vote, but the people that live out of city limits don’t get to vote. It’s not fair! Mykela Tanner Grade 3, Huntingburg Elementary
Skate park Dear Editor, I think Huntingburg needs a skate park, because people can use it for skate boarding, and for roller blading. Also kids can ride their bikes there. I am pretty sue they get tired of getting their skate boards stuck in their yards. It would also be fun, and it would be a safe place for kids to hang out. p.s. It would attract more people, which would increase the population. Jonathan Perez Grade 3, Huntingburg Elementary
Chirp, chirp Dear Editor, Chirp! Chirp! Do you hear that? That’s the sound of nature. You maybe want to know why we are in the woods. It sounds like a great learning opportunity to me. I mean what better way to catch a child’s attention. A new nature walk at our school Huntingburg Elementary. Picture this in a world of technology and video games. All the indoor class time. It would be great to get out of the ordinary classroom. What an awesome way to teach me and my classmates how beautiful and wonderous nature is. Sara Tribbie Grade 3, Huntingburg Elementary
Football for kids Dear Editor, I think there should be a fourth grade raider football team for kids. There are kids who would like to play but they have to be a certain age. I think they should be able to play from preschool and up. I think they should at least get to play from six and up. I would like to also have longer game time because when I played one team then half way through the game the third team comes and takes a place halfway through the game. One more thing can you make it to where you could have four teams instead of three teams. Adam King Grade 3, Huntingburg Elementary
Texting, driving Dear Editor, I think that people should stop texting while driving. Texting while driving is very dangerous, and it causes a lot of accidents and injuries. I mean some people can’t even resist a day without their phones, and if you ask me, I that that is pathetic. You should only use your phone for emergencies. People all the world text while driving, and then, next thing you know, you had a wreck. So if you are one of those people who text while driving, if you would stop, that would make the community a better place. So please stop texting while driving! Kenley Hayes Grade 4, Huntingburg Elementary
Roads Dear Editor, We need to fix our roads. They look outragous! There are so many holes in the
road, and all we do is put steel plates over them. We never try to fix them. When my family was driving we went through a big hole and we were so close to hitting another car. If I were in charge I would inspect the roads, and make sure nobody would wreck. We need to do something about this. For safety reasons, do you want to help? Evan McClain Grade 4, Huntingburg Elementary
Doctors needed Dear Editor, I think Huntingburg needs more doctors. People are getting cancer. It’s bad! Doctors need to find a new type of medicine for them to feel better. What do you think. We need people to feel good! Greyson Buse Grade 2, Huntingburg Elementary
Polite Dear Editor, I think that people should be polite. There shouldn’t be any stealing or anyone hurting anyone. You should also be polite to your world or environment by not littering. You should always be polite to anyone in your life that you care about, so the next time you think about hurting someone or their feelings go up to them and put a smile on their face. Kelsey Wibbeler Grade 4, Huntingburg Elementary
Fix league Dear Editor, I would really love if you would put this in the newspaper. Please fix up the little league field. Not the field, but around the field. They should get something like the softball field to shade the bleachers. The only place to get shade is standing under the big tree that is starting to grow into the batting cages. They need to put some shades over the bleachers. They need to fix the batting cages. They have holes on the net, and if you hit it hard enough, it will go through the holes in the top, and it will go into the softball field. They also need to trim the tree branches, so they aren’t going into the batting cages. If all the things were fixed up, they could have a tournament there. Not just for the league, but for travel teams. It would bring more money to the community, and not just for the little league field. That is why we need to fix up the field. Hudson Allen Grade 4, Huntingburg Elementary
White tigers Dear Editor, White tigers are certainly stunning with their contrasting colors and entrancing patterns, but do people realize what work goes into creating such astonishing beauty? Generations of inbreeding — generations of breeding daughters to fathers and brothers to sisters together to acquire a specific gene that can produce the white color. These genes that are produced can harm the offspring, creating spinal deformities and much more severe afflictions. Breeding organisms closely related via genetics together increases the chance of an animal being affected with a deleterious gene, or an especially injurious gene. Their immune systems may not function as vigorously as required to battle an infection. In that case, a beautiful tiger could very simply fall victim to a disease and ultimately perish. Many inbred animals have a high infant mortality rate, too, and offspring have a large chance of being born dead. If they survive an inbred creature’s lifespan will likely be cut in half. These facts show the more severe side of inbreeding animals. It can produce pelts and desirable traits in creatures, but it can also harm the animal. Inbreeding is an utterly horrible practice, and should be eliminated. Macaila Wilkins Grade 5, Huntingburg Elementary
Four-wheeler safety Dear Editor, Another person harmed on a four wheeler because they are not being safe. Four-wheeler safety needs to be addressed because on average 305 people die every Letters continue on Page 23

month in the United States of America because of wrecks. That is a lot of people! All states should make it illegal for four-wheelers to drive on the road. There would to be as many wrecks of four-wheelers were not allowed on the road. To prevent people from getting harmed by riding four-wheelers, we need to start wearing gear while riding all the time. Safety is very important. Crew Gerber Grade 5, Huntingburg Elementary
Technology Dear Editor, Do we depend on technology too much? The use of technology everyday is astonishing. People use technology to carry out the most mundane and simple tasks everyday. Kids, teens, and even adults are on technology too much. It is harmful and feeble to the brain. Too much screen time can be unhealthy for anyone. Kids could be on electronics late at night, and not be able to go to sleep. This causes them to be exhausted and not as focused during the day. We need to have limits. No one should not be on technology the whole day or night. People should communicate more. Some people are not on technology as much as others, but most are on electronics a lot. I need you to know why we should not be on technology as much. We mostly always rely on technology, but we need to have more limits and a helpful balance. Laken Parsons Grade 5, Huntingburg Elementary
Trampolines Dear Editor, I think trampolines should be banned. Trampolines are fun, but too many people and kids are getting hurt. Maybe if more people would have nets or limit the kids on it, it would be fine. There are a lot of people with trampolines. The first trampoline was invented in 1936. There are two types of trampolines. The first type is a competitive trampoline, and the other type is a recreational trampoline. Some sports use trampolines to develop athletic skills, but other people use trampolines for fun. Some reasons why people get hurt a lot is because they don’t have nets which makes it more dangerous. Trampolines caused nearly 95,000 injuries in 2012. Another reason why people get hurt is because too many get on at one time. In an article I read, it said that one girl accidentally shattered another girl’s teeth. Another reason why kids and people get hurt is because some people don’t have any supervision. If there would be a supervisor out watching you, not as many people would get hurt. Some people say that you can get exercise, and I agree. However, if you don’t have a net or a supervisor, then to me, it is not okay. You can get exercise by playing sports, running, and swimming. Levi Neukam Grade 5, Huntingburg Elementary
Cursive writing Dear Editor, Do you think cursive writing is still important? I think so because it has a very important part in our country’s history. Cursive writing is important in some ways and unimportant in others. One reason I think cursive writing is important is that most important documents are written in cursive. These are documents such as the Declaration of Independence and Christopher Columbus’s diary. How are you going to attempt to read those if you don’t know cursive? Another reason why I think cursive is important is that it’s easier to write in cursive than print. When you write in print you have to constantly pick up your pencil. When you write in cursive, all of the letters are put together so there is no picking up your pencil. It’s just faster. Lastly, if you don’t know how to write in cursive, it probably means you don’t know how to read it either. Which brings me back to the first reason; you can’t read the Declaration of Independence or Columbus’s diary. You’re missing out on important documents in history. Believe it or not, cursive has a major part in our country’s history! Yes, maybe we don’t write letters to people anymore but there still are important letters, reports, or maybe even love letters you need for writings. I also agree that social media may replace sending postcards, but a postcard is more special and valuable than social media. Also, what if you don’t have any connection to social media? It

would be useless and you would’ve missed out on a picture or message because whoever posted the picture couldn’t take the time to send a little message or picture to you. Kind of disrespectful, don’t you think? Caitlyn Frick Grade 5, Huntingburg Elementary
Homework Dear Editor, I think parents help their children too much with their homework. This topic you are reading about is the classic debate of “Should parents help their kids with homework?” This is a very debatable issue between parents and kids. This issue needs to be solved! Some kids don’t do their homework at school because they’re afraid to admit they don’t know what their teacher is talking about. Others are daydreaming about baseball or talking to friends while teachers are giving important lessons. Hello? Have you ever heard of something called tools? Children have trouble with words and don’t even bother using dictionaries! Some kids (and parents) disagree with that. A couple of people think that some kids need a little boost and that it’s not harmful, right? Wrong. Did you know that children who receive extensive assistance from their guardian(s) score worse on quizzes than children who don’t? Also, parents just assume that children are “too busy.” Well, they’re not too busy to skip homework! So what I’m trying to say is this: Parents, older brothers or sisters, don’t help kids with their homework. It’s okay if you give them a tiny hint once in a while, but if you write a whole book report for them, they’re not going to know what to do next time. Their name’s going on the paper, not yours. I hope my letter inspires parents, teachers, and even elder brothers or sisters. Isn’t it a beautiful sight to see younger ones growing and finding things out on their own? Joselyn Uresti Grade 5, Huntingburg Elementary
Giraffes Dear Editor, Giraffes are one of my favorite animals. They have the longest neck. They can 75 pounds of food a day. Giraffes live in Africa. Kyle Cashmore Grade 1, Holland Elementary

Baby brother Dear Editor, My baby brother is one. Now insted of crawling he walks. We think he is a lefty. He is trying to talk to us but we can’t quite understand him yet. He crys a lot. His name is Tate. Riley Blessinger Grade 1, Holland Elementary
Farm safety Dear Editor, Spring is here! Farmers are on the roads. You need to be looking for them. You will need to share the road with them. The farmer should try to get over and let you by. Slow down so no one gets hurt. Jacob Tempel Grade 1, Holland Elementary
Grandpa’s farm Dear Editor, My Grandpa’s farm has cows, cats, and a bunny. We feed the cows hay, the cats eat food, and the bunny carrots. I like to watch the cows eat and I pet them. That is why I like to go to my Grandpa’s farm. Hudson Montgomery Grade 1, Holland Elementary
Roadrunner Dear Editor, Have you ever seen a roadrunner? Well I have in Texas with my uncle Tommy. When I was riding with my uncle Tommy it ran across the road. But all I saw was woosh. Aiden Wibbeler Grade 1, Holland Elementary
Family
Animal daycare
Dear Editor, Family is a group of people that love each other. You have family reunions to spend time with your family. I have four people, one cat and one dog. Baylee Norris Grade 1, Holland Elementary
Dear Editor, In my opinion, people should take more care of their pets. We need an animal daycare in Huntingburg. Some pets have to stay in their cages all day long. People need to take care of their pets. Some people can’t take of them because they are sick, working or going to school. The pets like dogs, cats, birds and other pets need an animal daycare so they can be cared for. Addison Weaver Grade 2, Holland Elementary
Gross food Dear Editor, In some countries people eat spiders. It is weird and gross. I bet they eat cockroaches too. Why do they have to do that? Dean Cooper Grade 1, Holland Elementary
Hard work Dear Editor, I live on a farm. It is hard work. My favorite thing to do is walk my sister’s horse. Sometimes he doesn’t cooperate. His name is Copper. But it’s really fun to live on a farm. William Sickbert Grade 1, Holland Elementary
Pets
Dear Editor, It’s good to have a pet. Pets can be cute and cuddly. Pets can be slimy. I have a pet cat named Lauren. She is gray and white. I love her! Laney Bardwell Grade 1, Holland Elementary
Skunks smell Dear Editor, Skunks smell disgusting. They should spray frebreeze and lavender. Who ever person is they made it really, really, really disgusting. People should put skunk food in a cage and put something around it so we won’t smell the skunks spray. Saydee Arnold Grade 2, Holland Elementary
Eagles Dear Editor, I think people should stop killing eagles because eagles are nice accept if you mess with it’s eggs. But eagles are nice if you don’t try to shoot it or mess with it’s eggs. So stop killing eagles and for now on that should be a illegal so if some one kills a eagle you should give them a ticket or arrest them. Now people should stop killing eagles. Zachery Russell Grade 2, Holland Elementary
Outside tub Dear Editor, We need a hotube at school because recess is boring outside and inside. We need a hotube because it’s really really really cold outside and it’s hot inside. I am freezing outside and evryone agrees with me. So I say we a hotube for outside recess. Olivia Smith Grade 2, Holland Elementary
Pets are great Dear Editor, All people should have pets, if they want one. You could play with them, walk them, and it would add one more person to your family. For example I got a dog. I named her Gracie. We played fetch I took her for walks, and taught her tricks. Pets are great. Kamryn Allen Grade 2, Holland Elementary
Ice cream Dear Editor, I think Libby’s ice cream is the best ice cream. I think Libby’s ice cream is the best because they make their ice cream homemade. They also have so many different kinds of ice cream. I like Libby’s because they have cookie monster ice cream, mad batter ice cream, cinnamon roll ice cream, and grasshopper ice cream. My three favorite ice creams are cinnamon roll ice cream, cookie monster ice cream, and mad batter ice cream. Elizabeth Mehringer Grade 2, Holland Elementary
Thumper Dear Editor, Today I’m going to tell you about my rabbit Thumper. She lives outside in a green cage right next to some trees in our yard. She would live in the house because I would potty train her but my mom is elirgic to fur. Some things that make Thumper uneak is the small white dot at the top of head and her tanish brown color. I normally put her on a blue harness and blue leash. I got Thumper when I was turning 9 so I’ve had her for almost a year now. Now Editor, I hope you had a fun time reading about Thumper. Bye. Ayla Ring Grade 3, Holland Elementary
Always on phone Dear Editor, My mom is always on her phone 24,7. I want to know if there can be a law against that. Well, my mom is not on her phone 24,7, it’s that she’s always so busy and I want to play with her. It’s been a long time since we’ve done something together so, I am going to ask her if we can do something next weekend because this weekend I will be at my grandma’s house. Saree Sturgeon Grade 3, Holland Elementary
Forests Dear Editor, I love forests and trees but parks, forests and trees are being cut down for malls and other stores. We can help by growing trees, don’t litter and clean your local park. Trees help us, they make sure no dust is in the air. They make air. Save electriity, save lots of things made by trees. You can think of lots of ways to do it. Also make compost. There’s a ton of ways to save the trees. Get up and save the world. Grace Neier Grade 3, Holland Elementary
Colts Dear Editor, I’m going to tell you about the NFL. My favorite team is the Indianapolis Colts. My favorite player is Peyton Manning. He used to play for the Colts but now he plays for the Denver Broncos. NFL stands for National Football League. Football is my favorite sport. Eli Meyer Grade 3, Holland Elementary
Credit card Dear Editor, I think kids should be able to have their own credit card. I mean we might go crazy with it, but it is not fair that kids do not get them. I could get all the cloths I won’t and shoes. Me and my friends could go to the mail when ever we wanted to! 1 more thing is that our parents don’t have to pay for our stuff. And I could have my dad’s friends build me a bathroom in my room. That is why I think kids should be able to have credit cards. Emersyn Petry Grade 3, Holland Elementary
Fishing freaks Dear Editor, Me and my brother are fishing freaks. We love to mess with each other while we fish. My favorite baits are sassy shads, sexy frogs, spinner baits and a rattle trap. Some fish I’ve caught are bluegill, cropy, large mouth bass, Northern, Pike and a pond grenal. A pond grenal is a fish that is mostly bone. You can also call it a dog fish. Pups and pound Dear Editor, I really want a puppy for my birthday, but my parents won’t let me. They say that they’ll be the one cleaning it up. So all I’m sayin is that don’t let the good pups go to the pound. The pound is bad. I wish I could save it but I can’t. If I got a puppy I would name it Sparkles or if its a boy I’ll name it Buster. I just think even though those people out there don’t like puppies, just leave them alone. They probably have a owner. So plz stop the puppy catcher. Puppies should have freedom just like us. Megan Langebrake Grade 4, Holland Elementary
Amazing sport Dear Editor, Football is an amazing sport! I play football. It is fun when you get to tackle somebody. I am a running back and I did get tackled a lot I got so used to it that it never hurts that much any more. It is fun when you tackle somebody. Its funny watching them fall. Football is always going to be my second favorite sport. Blake Taylor Grade 4, Holland Elementary
Makes no sense Dear Editor, I would like to know why on Saturday you put The Saturday Herald and on all the other days you just put The Herald. It just doesn’t make sense to do that because they all ready have the dates on these. I also want to ask why do you put a story and then you continue it on the back. Why do you not just continue it on the next page. That just doesn’t make sense. Payton Nichter Grade 4, Holland Elementary
Animals save lives Dear Editor, Have you ever heard about how animals have saved people? There are so many amazing incidents where animals have saved people. Once in Florida a surfer was getting attacked by a shark and a pod of wild dolphins chased the shark away and brought the man back to shore. Another time there was an out of control pickup truck heading straight towards a baby’s stroller and a dog jumped and pushed the stroller out of the way taking the blow himself. I also read a boy sleeping in his bed, then he woke up to hear his blind cat growling. There was a burglar standing at the foot of his bed. When the boy reached for his phone the burglar said, “Don’t do that.” The voice of the thief pinpointed his exact location and the boy’s blind cat pounced and the wouldbe robber fled. Animals can be true heroes. Connie Owens Grade 4, Holland Elementary
Parents are heroes Dear Editor, I am going to write about why parents are heroes. Parents are heroes because they feed their kids well. They also provide clean clothes for you. If you want they will probably let you play sports. Some parents might have you go to school, or take the time to homeschool you. Hopefully, your parents will teach you well. You should thank them once in a while. This is why I think parents are heroes. Maddox Marshall Grade 4, Holland Elementary
Bonkers Dear Editor, I wish there were more days where we could bring in pets. It drives me bonkers that we can’t bring our pet to school. Because there used to be a day where you can bring one. I think it would be a good idea. They just can’t be huge like a St. Bernard. Nikolas Cummins Grade 4, Holland Elementary
Stomp out smoking Dear Editor, Do you like smoking? I don’t, that’s for sure, and that is why I think they should remove the smoking areas in Holiday World. I mean, is it really necessary to encourage smoking? Every time I walk by the smoking sta-
NIE ■ PAGE 27
tions, it is jam-packed in there. Now that makes me sad. When my friends and I walk past the stations we all hold our noses. Do you really want to make people do that? Another reason to remove smoking areas is because lots of people inhale the smoke. You could easily get second-hand smoke. Just think of all the people that bring their children in with them. That can’t be good. That is why I think they should remove smoking stations at Holiday World. Bailey Keusch Grade 5, Holland Elementary
Poaching Dear Editor, Why do people poach? Scientists have figured out what seems to be a million ways to make medicine. You don’t need to harvest endangered wild animals to make it. People need to set up security cameras everywhere animals are usually poached and have someone constantly monitoring it. There should also be people driving around those places to stop poaching before it starts. Garrison Sickbert Grade 5, Holland Elementary
Gas mileage Dear Editor, Cars seriously need better gas mileage. One reason is that eventually, the Earth will run out of crude oil and they won’t be able to create any more gasoline for cars or other vehicles. But with better gas mileage cars can go the same distance with less of it. Another reason is that the more gas we use, the more pollution there’ll be. It could damage wildlife and the environment. And if the U.S. has more oil rigs to drill oil, the higher the chance of oil spills there is. The future may have electric cars within the next few centuries, but from when now till there is electric cars, we need to reduce the amount of use of crude oil for people after us can still live with a supply of oil. Gabe Boeglin Grade 5, Holland Elementary
Trapped in cars Dear Editor, We need to stop leaving kids in cars. There are more than 3,000 kids killed each year. It does not matter if it is hot or cold, do not leave kids in cars. What would you do if you see a child locked in a car? Try to do anything to get the child out. If you leave your child in the car he or she can die. I hope people agree not to leave kids in cars. It is a poor choice to leave kids in cars. Mollie Birchler Grade 5, Holland Elementary
Reading Dear Editor, I think every school should have personal time to read their library books. Most kids that read do better at spelling, and vocabulary, it also helps some kids relax. Some books inspire kids to do things. A sporting book might inspire a kid to be more active or join a team in sports. In conclusion, kids should get more time to read their library books. Denae Reimann Grade 5, Holland Elementary
Everyone plays Dear Editor, I don’t like the argument around about a certain age limit of playing sports. Why I don’t like it because kids of all ages like playing sports. Especially football. Parents hate paying medical bills. But there kids are having fun. Kamden McKeough Grade 5, Holland Elementary
Discipline checkup Dear Editor, I would like to change how parents deal with their kids. I think there should be more discipline with their kids. Now days, parents let their kids get away with anything. People should stop making excuses for their child when they know you did wrong. Also, when their older they will expect help with money, job, and house. They need to learn how to do things by herself or himself. In conclusion, parents need to discipline their kids more often. Arrington Hartke Grade 5, Holland Elementary
Not fair Dear Editor, “Wait what!!” It’s not fair that boys here at Southridge have their own soccer team, and girls don’t. There are a lot of girls here at Southridge that like soccer and would join soccer if they had a team. Girls should have the same things that boys have. After all, soccer is for everyone, not just boys. A lot of girls have special talent for soccer like being goalie or defense. Some girls like challenges, and soccer may be a challenge for them. In addition, some girls just love playing for fun. It’s also good for exercising. While you run you are actually burning calories which is good for your body. Some girls just enjoy playing soccer but never get to play on a real team. I hope they make a girls soccer team by the end of 2018. This is why I believe girls should have their own soccer team here at Southridge Middle School. Katherin Cerna Perez Grade 6, Southridge Middle School
Juicy Big Mac Dear Editor, Are you tired of having to drive to Jasper for a juicy Big Mac? Me too. I think we need a McDonald’s in Huntingburg. There is one in Ferdinand and Jasper. All we have in Huntingburg is Dairy Queen, Spuds n Stuff, Subway, and little restaurants on Fourth Street. Yes, they are good restaurants, but we need a little more. We need a McDonald’s in Huntingburg! McDonald’s is so popular that even in a small town like Huntingburg we could keep it in business. It is the number one food chain in America and in Jasper people are lined up bumper to bumper at McDonald’s. Plus on average Americans spends up to 8.65 billion dollars a year at McDonald’s according to www.statista.com/topics/1444/ mcdonalds/. There are many places to put a McDonald’s. For example by CVS there is an empty lot where there could be a McDonald’s. There are many empty fields that aren’t being used for crops. There are also many grasslands to put one of these buildings. Yes, I know we should have some grass to roam around on, however there are many parks, hills, and even enough country land that has plenty of grass to roam on. People wouldn’t have to waste time, money, and gas to get the desired food they want from McDonalds. It takes 1520 minutes just to get to Jasper and on a busy day maybe even longer. Plus, you have to spend money on gas to drive to Jasper if you have a car that eats up gas. There would be less exhaust fumes and less air pollution if we didn’t have to drive that far. Right now gas is $ 1.53 for 1 gallon. Imagine if you needed 5 or 6 gallons of gas. Driving back and forth from Jasper can get EXPENSIVE! Instead of having to drive 1520 minutes for tonight’s supper, you could go to the one that should be in Huntingburg. There would be more jobs, and we wouldn’t have to waste our money, time, and gas driving to Jasper. So the next time you want McDonald’s stand your ground and talk to the mayor about this treat to Huntingburg! Abbi Hall Grade 6, Southridge Middle School
New gymnasium Dear Editor, Southridge Middle School’s gym court is awful! We desperately need a new gymnasium. The floor is way too slick, kids can barely fit in the bleachers, and two P.E classes at a time just doesn’t work. I think we need a new gymnasium. Everybody slips and falls while playing basketball. Students get bruises and fall nonstop. During raider drills [running], players will slip when trying to touch the line, and if a teammate doesn’t touch the line, other teammates will throw a fit. Also at basketball games players have no grip whatsoever. In the morning at Southridge Middle School all students are always smashed, and they have to sit on the floor. The students get tired of sitting on the floor; trust me I sit on the floor. Also at basketball games parents and fans are always smashed because the players sit on the same bleachers, and there are only six rows of bleachers on one side of the gym. If other fans come from other events and come down to the basketball game they most likely sit on the floor. No one wants to get in the way of the game, therefore we need more bleachers and more
room. In P.E class at Southridge Middle School on Tuesdays and Thursdays sixth grade are with the eighth graders in class. That is not only distracting for some students, but also sixth grade always has to go to another gym or outside. So if we were planning on doing something that day, we will not be able to do it that day. That is why I think we should have more than one gymnasium. If we would have more than one gymnasium we could also have more than one basketball game at our school. Also we could have practices at the same time. In conclusion, Southridge Middle School desperately needs a new gymnasium or two. It wouldn’t just help the students but also the parents and fans who watch the basketball games or volleyball games or help with events in the gymnasium. That is why I think we need a new gymnasium or two. Ella Mattingly Grade 6, Southridge Middle School
Thank your coach Dear Editor, Have you ever played a sport, and it’s coming to the end of the season, and you’re debating whether or not you should thank your coach? Well in my opinion I believe you should. There are many reasons you should thank your coach for coaching you, whether it was a good season or not. For one, they put their time into teaching you and showing you how to play the sport and be good at it. They have to go to the home games, away games, and also practices. You might think that’s easy, but it’s not too easy if you think about it. It’s a lot of time. Your coach has been alive longer than you and is willing to motivate you and always help you. He’s more experienced than you. He knows more about the sport than you. Also he has learned and taught about the sport so he’s going to know what he is doing. These are my reasons why you should thank your coach and admire him for all he’s done for you in the sport and possibly outside of the sport. Kaden Neukam Grade 6, Southridge Middle School
Stop bullying Dear Editor, More than 160,000 kids stay home from school each day because they are scared to be bullied. Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year. That’s a lot of kids, but we could stop that number from going any higher. A study has shown that 17% of American students report being bullied 23 times a month within a school semester. We should take a stand and stop bullying. There are different types of bullying. The most common ones are verbal, physical, relational and cyber bullying. Hundreds people commit suicide because of bullying. We can stop that if we take a stand and stop bullying. We can help stop bullying by being friendly, tell a trusted adult, help the that they are loved and that you care. Set a good example for them. If you see a kid getting bullied, stand up and tell them. I know it is so easy to say, but so hard to do. Be brave! Stand up to bullies! Kylie Evans Grade 6, Southridge Middle School
Limit device time Dear Editor, “Get off your electronic device!” exclaims Dad. We all agree that every parent can easily relate to this sentence. They tell their kids this every single day. Kids these days are always on their devices. These devices might seem harmless, but some studies prove that these screens are terrible for your health. Kids are so into their televisions and devices that they forget to go outside, breathe fresh air, and just play. They need to just have fun! Today millions of kids are obese. Some of this is caused by electronics. Kids need to burn off energy. This makes them happy. Kids that don’t play sports shouldn’t cut down on exercise and just sit around on their devices. They should go outside and ride their bikes or something. Do something that will keep you healthy and put a smile on your face. In addition, screens on TVs, phones, and Letters continue on Page 29

tablets can actually harm your pattern of sleep as well as cause eating disorders. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends no more than two hours of screen time a day. This might seem like a lot, but when you’re addicted you may spend much more time than this looking at a harmful screen. Any more than this can lead to your brain being stimulated. This can hurt your brain making it very hard to fall asleep at night. Studies show that kids with televisions in their room don’t score well on tests. It can also come to a point where you’re so addicted you skip eating. In addition, paying attention at school becomes a hard task. You might have your imaginary world on your mind. Screens also lead to a lack of socialization. Many kids are so into their fantasy worlds that they lose track of the real world. They lose total touch with friends, relatives, and others. If you never talk to your friends, they will not talk to you either. Even when I go out to eat at fancy restaurants I see people around me glaring at their phones instead of having conversations with those around them. How rude! Also, on electronics there is social media. Social media often leads to cyberbullying. In fact, half of all teens on social media are cyberbullied. In conclusion, kids should limit their screen time because too much can have negative consequences. Remember this important advice: limit screen time to two hours a day, put your tablet and IPhones away and ...go outside with your friends and play! Brayson Fuhs Grade 6, Southridge Middle School
Virtual schools Dear Editor, I think that the Dubois County Schools should become virtual. This would be a good for the students and teachers. The students would not have to make up that day that they miss, and would have a good reason to be on the computer. This is good for the teacher, because they could then teach something new the next day. A bad thing about becoming virtual is that you have to have access to the internet. This is why I think that the schools should become virtual. Abigail Kerkhoff Grade 7, Southridge Middle School
Sidewalk needed Dear Editor, I think that they should put a sidewalk somewhere along Sunset Dr. There are lots of people after school that walk or bike that road. Not everyday, but most of the time there is someone walking home. You don’t really need to put a sidewalk past the school but you need to put one on East Sunset Dr. You also need to put a sidewalk going down to the Elementary School from the Middle School. There are many cars that drive there too. Breck Sternberg Grade 7, Southridge Middle School
Coaches vs. Cancer Dear Editor, Coaches vs. Cancer Night has always been a very popular event, but don’t you think it would be awesome to have it at other sporting events. This event brings in thousands of dollars for cancer research. The more coaches vs. cancer nights we have the more money that goes to this great cause. This could be a way to help more people that need it. Briley King Grade 7, Southridge Middle School
Life skills Dear Editor, It’s important for young adults to know how to do a variety of practical life skills such as changing a tire, proper usage of household tools, and basic home repair and maintenance. Today’s generation has been relying too much on other people doing things for them. Nobody knows how to do anything independently or think for themselves. For this reason I believe Southridge and other local schools should require a shop class so students can learn these life lessons. For example when you get out of high school or college you may be a math genius but you’re not going to have teachers or parents to help you with everything you do when you are not doing math. So it’s essential for
NIE ■ PAGE 29
everyone to attend a shop class and obtain basic knowledge in practical life skills. It is important for young adults to go to a shop class to make their life better in the future. In the class we would teach you how to grow and raise your own food. As well as cook nutritious meals with the ingredients you raised which would limit the obesity rates and make you feel better. Learning how to cook could also save you money because cooking at home would minimize eating fast food. “Do your kids or do you know how to change a tire or the oil in your car.” Well in these classes we would teach essential jobs such as changing the oil in your car and how to change a tire. For example when you driving to an important event and you get a flat you don’t want to have to wait for someone else to do it for you. It would be helpful if you could just do it yourself and not have to be reliant on other people. These are some ways shop class will impact you but did you also know it could impact our economy. If everyone succeeded in the class and went into the field of manufacturing or making things. This would help our economy because our economy needs more people who can make things instead of sending them to foreign countries to make them for cheaper. To add to that overseas laborers have lower standards of how they make things so these products break within 5 years so it’s pretty much useless and who wants their merchandise to break right away. Not me I know that. Also knowing how to manufacture has lead us through and helped us win World War 2. Knowing these skills help our economy and the kids who really don’t learn very well from “pushthepencil” classroom work. These kids could finally connect with something in school that they are really interested in. Learning hands on skills could help these kids find jobs, see that their skills make a difference and therefore have a more successful life. On the other hand, some people may say adding a shop class to the student’s schedule would make less time for the common core classes. Then I have a question for them how much of the stuff you learned in these common core classes carry on to the real world? Also do you think you will change more tires and hammer more nails than you will use calculus. Not everyone is meant to go to college some people are meant to do to a trade school or a hands on school. Although it’s important to know how to do basic math and english some people can thrive off just the basics if they are skilled with using their hands. Book knowledge is very important but everyday common sense skills are essential for a healthy society. In conclusion our society and the nation would benefit from having a mandatory shop class. It would help our children have a successful academic career. It would also benefit our economy by manufacturing goods that are durable and last longer instead of the cheap foreign low quality products that break. It’s important for all people to know how to do practical life skills. Having a shop class would also help our dependent society thrive in manufacturing and offer opportunities for more students to find success in learning. So do you think we should have a mandatory shop class? Owen Kinker Grade 8, Southridge Middle School
The issue of abortion Dear Editor, Throughout my lifetime the topic of abortion has always bothered me. It is absurd to me that someone would want to end an innocent child’s life who has done nothing wrong. The only people that have done something wrong in that child’s brief existence are the ones who created and destroyed the child’s life. Would you really want to end an innocent baby’s life? I know for a fact that I would not want to do that. What about you? The killing of an innocent human being is terribly wrong to me, even if that human being hasn’t been born yet. Unborn babies are considered human beings by the United States government. It has been proven that life begins at conception, so in that case unborn babies are human beings with a right to life. You know what is really sad? The fetuses feel pain during the procedure. Would you really want innocent children feeling pain for no reason whatsoever? Bernard N. Nathanson, MD, stated that in the ultrasounds the children’s mouths are open in a “silent scream.” The children
are going through agonizing pain. Do you think putting children through unnecessary pain for the well being of yourself is fair? Abortion also defies God’s word. If you are a religious Christian and is thinking about getting an abortion, I would reconsider your thought and continue with your pregnancy. By the time a baby is conceived, he or she is recognized by God. The Sixth Commandment in the Bible’s Old Testament states “Thou shalt not kill” (Exodus 20:13). That Bible verse applies to all of the born and unborn. Not only does abortion cause harm to the fetus, it eventually causes harm in the female later on in her life. Studies have shown that 51.6% of men have regret, 45.2% felt sadness, and 25.8% experienced depression. Women who have aborted have a 154% higher risk of committing suicide. Also, women have a higher risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer. Don’t you want a healthier life for both you and your child? I would not recommend abortion. If you cannot finance a child, you should really look into adoption. Some parents cannot have a child because of fertility issues. They want children. You could help them by carrying your baby full term and let them have a child they have dreamed of having but couldn’t. I don’t mind if abortion is illegal or not. I believe it should be unthinkable to the point where everyone thinks that it’s it an absurd idea. Overall, I strongly believe that there are many other choices and recommendations besides abortion. If you are thinking of getting an abortion, I would definitely reconsider and find someone to talk to and ask questions. There are many people you could go to for help and I know for sure you could find someone at St. Mary’s Church to help you make the right decisions. Everyone has their own opinion and strong feelings toward this topic, this is mine. I hope that you the people of Dubois County, have the same feelings towards abortion as I do. Why Hispanics come here Dear Editor, There is a huge misconception here in Dubois County about why Hispanics come here. It’s not just in Dubois County but in all parts of the United States. There are a lot of people who judge Hispanics because they “come to the United States expecting to find a job and be hired but don’t want to learn how to speak English.” Many people believe that the only reason Hispanics come here is to steal American jobs. They are very quick to judge immigrants, yet they don’t take the time to learn their stories, what they’ve been through. There are many reasons why Hispanics come to the United States. The main reason is that they are trying to escape violence in their countries. The Latin America region holds thirteen of the top twenty homicide rates in the world. There are many people who don’t understand that most immigrants don’t come here trying to steal jobs. They come here for survival more than trying to steal jobs. They come her trying to protect their families. What most people don’t know is most of these immigrants are blackmailed and told that they have to pay a large amount of money, money that most don’t have because they are super poor, otherwise their family would be killed. I know many families myself that would be dead if they hadn’t come here to America. They come to desperate measures. They don’t know what to do. All they know is that they want to save their family. There is another main reason to why Hispanics immigrate here to the United States. Most of these immigrants were born in some of the poorest places. In 2014 and 2015 more than half of the Hispanics that immigrated here where teenagers. Most of those teenagers are my age and older. According to Richard Cowan of Reuters.com “The minors flooding over the border are often teenagers leaving behind poverty or violence in Mexico, and other parts of Central America such as Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.” Most of them never went to school where they lived. They are illiterate. There’s is nothing they could do about it though because they are sent to work in fields to get some money so they can give their siblings something to eat. Even what they do go to work at the age of like 12, they don’t get paid a lot of money. Most only get paid like 1 dollar a day. They can’t ask for a raise in their pay because their employers are poor also. Most of these
teenagers come to the United States looking for a place where they can work to send money to their families. Here in Dubois County, many of the Hispanic families come from places such as Mexico, El Salvador and Guatemala. These countries are beautiful places but they are also full of violence and poverty. Of all the places they could have chosen, these families chose to settle here in Dubois County. They didn’t come there to steal jobs. They came here looking for jobs so they could give their family something to eat. They are hardworking people that don’t want their children to suffer from starvation like they did when they were growing up. The Hispanic community here is very united. Many of these Hispanics have dealt with many racial comments and discrimination. People should know better than to judge them without knowing them. The community here in Dubois County should take time to learn their stories, find out what they’ve been through. Melissa Dubon Grade 8, Southridge Middle School
Pregnant teens Dear Editor, The thought of teens getting pregnant is concerning to me. I know several people who have become pregnant whom at one point were very close to me. Only one of the three girls are still in school. Additionally, they all still have struggles including money and taking care of the infant. Research shows that in 2010, the state of Indiana had ten thousand and thirtyone abortions. However, the latest data reported in 2013 says that there were 8.027 abortions. The abortion rates have decreased rapidly, but it’s not enough. On average, most teens get scared of having a child, so they abort them. Teen pregnancy is a serious issue. Teens should not be getting pregnant and having children. They should be hanging out with their friends and focusing on their education so that they can be successful in the future. Even if teens do get pregnant, they should make good decisions to figure out the best thing to do for the child. Many teens who have had a baby struggle to support him or her financially. In the state of Indiana, family planning centers totaled 22.4 million dollars. The citizens taxes pay for the teens childcare, food and numerous other necessities. Teens that are having babies not only affect the teen and the baby, but everyone who pay taxes. Another issue is abortion. Teens think that because of their bad choices they can kill a life just to make their life easier. In my opinion, abortion is never an option. Would you really kill a life just to make yours easier? There are always other options. If you discover that you pregnant one option to consider would be adoption. If you cannot take care of your child or don’t want one, don’t kill it. There are many couples that do not have the privilege to have a baby. So why ruin a child’s life by not taking care of them or not allowing them to live when that child could be a blessing to someone else? Most teenage girls that get pregnant drop out of school. Sources indicate that nationally, thirty percent of all teenage girls who drop out of school state dropping out is due to the fact of the stressors of being a young parent. Young mothers find difficulty completing homework assignments, studying for tests and are unable to participate in extracurricular activities after school. Being a mother when you are a teen also affects your social life. They don’t get to spend as much time with their peers as often as they used to because they now have to take care of a child. Events such as basketball, football, baseball games and school dances are several opportunities that they will not be able to attend unless they bring their child with them. I do not and will not approve of teen pregnancy. Teens have much greater things to accomplish in life. In some cases, like rape, I understand that it is not the teens fault. However, teens getting pregnant is usually their decision. I would advise all teens to never make that poor decision. When you are much older and are married and financially stable, then that is the time you can bring a child into your life. In conclusion, we all make mistakes in life, but some like pregnancy will affect you and the child for the rest of your life. No smoking Dear Editor, Have you ever wondered if there was something you have never wanted. The thing I think we shouldn’t have is smoking. The first reason I think we shouldn’t have smoking is because it is unhealthy for everything and everyone. Also smoking cigarettes can make your lungs go bad. You might get worse and get addicted to smoking cigarettes and you couldn’t go one day without smoking. You will never be able to quit because smoking can make your body go bad because it hurts your lungs and messes up your brain. If you try to quit and you go a few days without smoking you will get more and more tempted to smoke. My second reason not to smoke is because it can pollute the air which can make plants wilt and animals get sick. The pollution of smoking add up to a lot since a lot of people smoke a lot. All the air in their house couldn’t be breathable and that is the reason a lot of people who smoke are either sick or coughing all day. If the people who are smoking nonstop and they have kids I wouldn’t think that a kid would like to have a parent that smoked. So those are the reasons that I think we shouldn’t smoke. Brown Derby Dear Editor, We all have opinions on different things such as getting more library’s, getting more homework, and other things. I think they should rebuild the Brown Derby. The Brown Derby is a restaurant in Schnellville that burned down. My first reason why I think they should rebuild the Brown Derby is because mom and dad don’t like to drive five minutes away to get food. Mom and Dad don’t like to drive five minutes away because they’re tired. Mom works as a babysitter and dad is a farmer and usually by the time mom gets off work on Friday she is exhausted. On those days she doesn’t feel like cooking so we either pop a pizza in the oven or order a pizza from Brick Oven in Jasper. Sometimes we get lucky because mom orders food from Arnie’s Tavern in St.Anthony! They would rather order food from the Brown Derby in Schnellville though. Mom, me, and my brothers have never been there though. Only Dad has been there. The Brown Derby burned down a little after Mom and Dad started dating. My second reason why I think they should rebuild the Brown Derby is because all of the Schnellville get along and have fun. Last year in 2015 Schnellville celebrated their 150th birthday in September. We all had so much fun dancing, eating fried chicken, playing games, making the food, and so much more! We all have so much fun that when Mom or Dad start talking they never stopped. If they would rebuild the Brown Derby we would all see each other more often. Those are my two reasons why I think they should rebuild the Brown Derby in Schnellville. Katlyn Betz Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary
Need basketballs Dear Editor, We all have an opinion on basketball. Some people like to cheer, eat, and play basketball games. Other people don’t like basketball. I feel that there should be more basketballs for practicing. I also feel if this school had a bigger gym then we could have a bigger court. I like basketball a lot. We need more basketballs because people on the court need their own ball. I remember people on the basketball teams didn’t have enough basketballs. They have to share balls because people don’t have their own ball. People can’t shoot baskets because other people take the ball. I also want a bigger gym so that we can have a bigger basketball court. Our basketball court is too small for a team of people to dribble. With a bigger basketball court, people can run around the gym and get their exercise. For these reasons, I think basketball would be an even better sport at Pine Ridge. Dove limit
Better gymnast
School is good
Dear Editor, In my opinion the state of Indiana should change the dove limit to 25 instead of 15. My first reason is because one time all my dad’s friends and I were having a party. For the party we were going to have doves. Only me, my dad, and three others had licenses. So after we all shot our limit, we cleaned and cleaned all of the doves. But when we got to the party more people showed up and then we didn’t have enough. So after they were eaten a lot of people didn’t get to try them. My second reason we should have a bigger dove limit is because one time my dad and I were dove hunting and we were waiting on the ground in some brush. My dad had 13 doves and I had 11. Then all of a sudden a flock of doves came right over us and we both raised are guns. We fired three times each. My dad got 1 and I got 2. So now I have 13 and my dad has 14. After we got the doves we were sitting and having a good time when I saw another flock. They were coming right at us also so we got the guns ready. When they flew over we shot. Dad shot 2 rounds and I shot 3 rounds. My dad got 1 and I got 2. So now we both have the limit. But that was bad because we had to stop being together and having fun. Those are my two reasons I think that the dove limit in Indiana should be moved up to 25 instead of 15. SamKluesner Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary
Dear Editor, Have you ever thought about being the world’s best gymnast? Well, first you need a lot of time and training to be the best. So that’s why I’m going to write about how we need more time in gymnastics. My first reason I think we need more time in gymnastics is because I practice at home on my gymnastics mat without a good spot. (A spot is also known as a helper for skills in gymnastics.) I think if we had more time in gymnastics I wouldn’t have to practice as much at home. I’m afraid to try my skill at home because my mom isn’t the best spot in the world. If we had a longer time period in gymnastics, I maybe can get my roundoff backhandspring backhandspring. Then I can practice without a spot. The second reason I think we need more time in gymnastics is because I need to get better at whatever skill I’m working on. The skill I’m working on is my roundoff backhandspring backhandspring! If you’re trying to get good at three roundoff backhands, that’s going to take some time to learn. My gym time is 6:15 through 7:15 p.m. That’s a pretty good time but I think we could get a little better if we got maybe forty-five minutes longer. If Flip and Twist workers are reading this could you please tell Anita? This is my opinion of why I think we need more time to practice in gymnastics. These reasons you just read are my personal opinion. I loved making this story. I hope you loved reading this story. Lillian Schnell Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary
Dear Editor, We all have an opinion about school. School is good for many things Math, English, Science, and Social Studies. People who like school probably want more school like I do. The first reason I want more school is because lots of people could get smarter by having more days of school. When teachers teach, students get smarter by learning more things each day like Math or English. The second reason I think we should have more days of school is because of friends. You get to play with them at recess. You can play games, make jokes and play with toys. If you like sports you could play baseball, football, or even soccer. Friend and school work are the reasons I want more school. Jabrion Hands Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary
Pave roads Dear Editor, Have you ever wished that you could ride a bike on paved roads all the time? This bothers me a lot. I think every road should be paved. The first reason I think roads should be paved is because I want NO gravel. One time I was inside watching a show on TV called Teen Titans Go! My grandma then asked me if I wanted to go ride my bike. Then I said okay. So I went on my bike called the Dirt Racer. It has 7 gears, and shocks. I rode to the curb, turned around then went down a hill. After that I went on a gravel road. Right after I got on the gravel I crashed. I scraped my elbow and one knee. I had to get up and walk my bike over to my grandma’s house. When I got in the house she put hydrogen peroxide on my scrapes. Then she put BandAids on them. That warm summer day was not very fun. The second reason I think roads should be paved is because I want my tires to be black instead of turning white because of gravel. One time I was riding my bike back to my dad’s house after being at my grandma’s. The reason I was going back to my dad’s is because I crashed that day on my bike. Whenever I was going up a hill I noticed that my tires turned white. So when I got home I told my dad about the crash then washed my tires off with the water hose. I hope that the government gets enough money so this won’t happen again. But if we do this we need to raise a ton of money for the government. So this probably won’t happen. Bryce Sickbert Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary
Longer season Dear Editor, I have something that I want more of. It is more hunting. It is so fun and I don’t want any less of hunting. If there was more hunting, I probably would have a deer. One day me and my dad were going hunting. We sat in the tree stand and saw a deer come in our woods and a doe walked in. My dad shot the doe. Then a four point buck came in the other side of the woods. I could see the buck and the buck walked in the woods. My dad thought that the buck was dead, so he walked down to the deer. It was breathing really hard and started to run away. The next day was the last day of hunting. We didn’t see any deer that day. I didn’t get a deer at all that year. I think that we should have a longer hunting season. It would be a lot of fun if we had more hunting. It would be the best thing in the world. It is fun because you get to enjoy nature. I also enjoy spending time in the tree stand with my dad. Those are my reasons that we should have more hunting. You can see now I want more hunting. That is my story. Seth Striegel Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary
Less homework Dear Editor, We all have different opinions such as having more homework, get more libraries, or don’t do drugs. I think kids should have less homework! The first reason I think kids should have less homework is because it takes a long time. It was a really nice day and I was just about to go outside when my mom asked if I had any homework. I said I did. Then she said you have to finish your homework first before you go outside. So I got out my homework and worked on it. I had a lot of homework. I worked on it and worked on it. I looked up at the clock and saw that two hours had gone by. The next thing thing I saw was my dad. It was getting dark so I tried to hurry. When I got finished it was dark and I couldn’t go outside. My second reason I think kids should have less homework is because you can’t do anything till you finish your homework. It was a really nice day and my mom and brother were going for a walk. I asked if I could go, but my mom said I had to finish my homework first. I said I could catch up to them because I know the route. I got out my homework and realized I had a lot. I worked on it and worked on it. When I got finished I saw my mom and brother walking up the driveway. This is why kids should have less homework. Please give kids less homework so we can do more things. Trevor Berg Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary
Closer libraries Dear Editor, Have you ever wanted entertainment and you can’t think of anything to do? Read a book! But what if you’ve read all your books? Well, that’s why I think we need more libraries. My first reason why I think we need more libraries is because some people don’t live close enough to libraries. One time I asked my mom if I could go to the library but she said we didn’t have enough time and that we weren’t close enough. So this is a problem for people who like to read but don’t live close enough to go to a library. My second reason why I think we need more libraries is because some kids who want a book and go to school go to their school library but they don’t have it. Well, one time I was at school and was reading a series of books and needed the fourth one but my school library didn’t have it. So I went to my local library and got the book I needed. Now books are great and libraries take good care of them. This is why think we need more libraries and I hope you will agree with me. Austin DeSchamp Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary
Homework smarts Dear Editor, Have you ever wondered if you could become the the world’s smartest scientist? First to become the world’s smartest scientist the teachers need to start sending home more homework. The first reason I think we should have more homework is because it can help make us smarter. One time when I was in 1st grade the teacher sent home thirty subtraction problems. By the time I gave them back to the teacher I was as smart as a bird. The second reason I think that we should have more homework is that sometimes it can get boring at home. In 2nd grade one day when I didn’t have any homework and there was nothing to do so I played video games which I’m not a big fan of. I tried to play toys, but that got really boring. I also tried the tv and there was nothing good to watch. That’s why I think it would be better for us to do more homework than we do. Gracelynn Smith Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary
Longer recess Dear Editor, We all have opinions such as getting more libraries, having more homework, and tons of other things too. I think we should have longer recesses. My first reason I think we should have longer recesses is because we need more exercise. We only get 15 minutes of recesses and it takes 5 minutes of recess time to pick teams for football, basketball, or who is it for tag, four squares, and so many other games too. For example, if you are playing a basketball game you aren’t going to be able to play a whole game in 15 minutes. At recess my friends and I do all sorts of things but we really like to jump rope. We like to do it even if it is double dutch, jumping individually, or taking a long jump and running and jumping in. We also play four corners. We need longer recesses so we can do these things longer to get more exercise. My second reason I think we should have longer recesses is because we don’t have enough time for basketball games and for everyone to go through on jump rope. If my friends and I are playing jump rope we have two people holding the jump rope. We all don’t get to go the same time. If we had longer recesses we would be able to let the ones holding the jump rope go and jump for a little bit too. That’s my opinion on having longer recesses. I hope my reasons convince you that we should have longer recesses. I hope you enjoyed reading my story just as much as I enjoyed writing this. Allison Fraze Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary
More baseball Dear Editor, Many people have different opinions about different things like less homework, no drugs, and more school. One of my opinions is to have more baseball. The first reason I want more baseball is because I want more time to play on the field and a longer season. It could be before season or after season. Some kids don’t have to play if they do not want to. It would make the kids that do play a whole lot better Letters continue on Page 33

than they are now. They would be prepared for practice. The coach might think that you are a really good player. You would have a really good arm so you could throw the baseball really good. You would be able to hit the baseball farther than you normally could. You would have a better experience with hitting the ball and you would have more experience of catching a fly ball. You never know you might hit a grand slam one day. The second reason I want more baseball to play is because sometimes you might be at home all bored and there’s nothing to do and there’s nothing on TV. You might not want to play video games, and your siblings might not want to play with you. All you can think about is baseball but there is nobody in your house to play with. You go outside and throw your baseball in the air. That gets boring. You look at your baseball cards if you have any that gets boring. You ask your dad multiple times and he says, “Not right now I’m busy.” Then you stay bored for the rest of the day. Those are the two reasons I would like more baseball. Sometimes you might get bored and having more time to play on the field would be good for all of us! Aaron Beckman Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary
Separate classes Dear Editor, I think boys and girls should not be in separate classes. Boys and girls seem to learn better when there is a variety of opinions in the classroom. Girls have a different way of looking at problems and solutions than boys do. In my classroom, we have boys and girls together. When we try to solve a problem as a group, the boys express their thoughts on the question better when girls are in their group. When just an all boy group tries to solve problems in my classroom, they seem to get off track easier. Sometimes girls need an opinion or help from a boy, and sometimes a boy needs a girl’s help and opinions since they have different personalities. It is also nice to compete against the boys in the classroom for the right answer or to get a better grade. If boys in girls are not in separate classes then there wouldn’t much learning. Gabrielle Englert Grade 5, Cedar Crest Intermediate
Gluten option Dear Editor, I think we should have gluten-free and vegetarian food at our schools. Some people have to bring their lunch everyday because they can’t have gluten and some don’t eat meat. It just gives them more work. For some kids it is doctor recommended to not eat some food. That means they can’t have gluten and some don’t eat meat. Some kids need to try new things. It keeps them healthy and fit. It also gives them many more choices. This is why I think we need gluten-free food and vegetarian food at our schools. Grace Schuetter Grade 5, Cedar Crest Intermediate
Skill Level Dear Editor, I am writing to tell you why I think that schools should have different classes depending on our skill level. I feel strongly about this because sometimes I look at the other people in my class and I can tell by their actions that they’re bored, on the other hand sometimes I can tell by their facial expressions that they are very confused. I talked to some of my fellow classmates and they said that they always feel like that and I feel like that sometimes too. If we have different classrooms depending on our skill level then there will be less people in the class. This will be a help to the teachers because they won’t have to try to teach people at different skill levels, so if we have different classrooms then that will solve the problems of the teachers having to find a way to teach people with different skills. This isn’t just a good opportunity for us kids it’s also a good opportunity for the people that are looking for jobs. If we have more classes then that will mean that we need more teachers and helpers and so all those people that are looking for jobs will have a chance of getting one as a teacher or
NIE ■ PAGE 33
helper. This is why I feel like the schools should start having different classes compared on our skill level. Kaylee Berg Grade 5, Cedar Crest Intermediate
Keep mines open Dear Editor, I am writing to you today to tell you why I think coal mines should stay open and should quit getting shut down. My first reason of why I think this is because too many people are losing their jobs because coal mines are getting shut down. Local coal miners and truck triver have been laid off. Then they have to go out and find another job somewhere else. Another one of my reasons is because there are thousands of coal mines in the United States that would have to be shut down. Southern Indiana is known for coal mining. A couple more reasons of why I think coal mines should stay open is because when coal is burned it produces energy that we use and need. From my opinion I do not think solar panels can produce as much energy that coal produces. A few more reasons for my suggestion is coal is a natural resource that we should use. Like many people know Southern Indiana is know for coal mining, and if they are all shut down then what? Another fact you should know is that once coal is dug up it makes soil that farmers can farm. We should also use what we have like coal instead of buying solar panels and then having to build them. With coal all you have to do is dig it up and haul it away to be burned, but with solar panels you have to make them, buy them, and then build and wire them up to some kind of energy box. This is why I feel that coal mines should stay open and running. Ben Werner Grade 5, Cedar Crest Intermediate
Use yoga balls Dear Editor, People always tip their chairs and the chairs are uncomfortable. The reason I am writing to you is because I think CCI should get yoga balls. The yoga balls engage the mind when students sit on stability balls, both sides of their brains are engaged in keeping their bodies on the yoga balls. The brain is more focused on learning. The yoga balls are good for attentionchallenged students by focusing better when using yoga balls instead of chairs. Students behave better and language skills improve. The balls give them better posture When kids are sitting up straight, they’re more likely to pay attention in class. Luke Hauser Grade 5, Cedar Crest Intermediate
School uniforms Dear Editor, I am writing to tell you why I think we need school uniforms. It helps enforce positive behavior. Some people like to show off. With uniforms people won’t show off or think they are better than some people because they have more expensive clothing. The mornings become easier for the parents. Some kids can’t decide what to wear to school and they argue about it with their parents. With uniforms they have to wear the same thing everyday. Now they don’t have to argue! It creates a sense of school spirit. Some people feel as if they are not included in activities with their friends. If we have uniforms everyone will have the sense of inclusion. There is no room for misinterpretation. Uniforms control the dress code. There is no room for misinterpretation in Cedar Crest Intermediate!! It is cheaper to buy school uniforms than regular clothes. You don’t have to buy new clothes every season. It leaves extra budget for stylish weekend clothing. Instead of wearing the same thing that you wear to school, you can be stylish however you want to be on the weekend. This is why I think we need school uniforms. Hailey Kilburn Grade 5, Cedar Crest Intermediate
Just dance Dear Editor, Have you ever tried dance? If not, try it. Try something new. You start dance any age, no matter if you are young or older. I started when I was in the second grade. I was pretty shy. It’s okay if you are shy the very first time. Once you get used to dancing, you are going to get into it like nobody’s watching. It takes lots, and lots, and lots of practice to get better at what you want to accomplish. If you get frustrated with yourself, don’t. Everyone is not perfect. Still to this very day, I get frustrated with myself when I try to get better at my jumps and turns. Avari Burger Grade 6, Cedar Crest Intermediate
Roadside trash Dear Editor, Trash along the side of the road is bad for many reasons. It’s bad for animals because their feet could be caught in the trash. The trash could be deadly to the animals. Glass and nails could poke holes in car tries. Trash could also get caught in a lawn mower or farm equipment. Broken glass could be bad, too. If a person or animal would step on a shard of glass it could be stuck in their foot. The foot could be infected. Also, some trash can’t decompose. That would mean that piece of trash will stay there for a unhealthy long time. Avery Knight Grade 6, Cedar Crest Intermediate
Passing period Dear Editor, RING! That is the bell that signifies it is time to change classes. This is usually the time when students grab their books and go to class, but I really don’t think we students have enough time in between classes. Our passing period is short the way it is, and sometimes it gets even shorter. Some teachers underestimate the time they have in each period and plan too much material for class which makes class go too long. When teachers go over into our 2 minutes of time, they are limiting our time to get to the next class. We have no time to do anything to prepare for our next class and gather what is needed. Everyone complains every once in awhile about how rowdy their students are and how much talking they do during the class. In my opinion, the solution is to lengthen the passing period to give us a little break. For one, it would benefit the teachers because the students would then, hopefully, have the talking out of their systems so they are ready for class. Also, it would give more time for the students to get organized and get all of their homework together. This would also give students a little time to just talk and have fun. One of my main reasons for a longer passing period is so we actually have time to do everything teachers expect us to. More time would give students time to be more prepared. The reason I keep stressing that is because students often feel rushed when they have not that much time before their next class. It would also give us more time to organize our books and homework, which I know teachers will like if we have all our things. Lastly, most teachers want us students to use the restroom during those two single minutes we have. That also makes people feel rushed because they want us to use time we really don’t have. This is exactly why I think passing period, or the time between classes, needs to be increased. So, go talk to the school board because if you do, you will be improving both students’ and teachers’ days. Abbie Jahn Grade 6, Cedar Crest Intermediate
Later start Dear Editor, Have you ever had that moment where your eyes won’t stay open or where you fall asleep in class. If you have or know someone who has, then you probably would agree that school starts too early. I think we should push back when school starts to 9:00 instead of 8:00 and end the school day at 4:00 instead of 3:00. Children might need to stay up late to study and don’t get enough sleep. Kids who don’t get sleep can be grouchy or moody. They might get stressed more easily. Kids might not get all the fun that
school can provide. When kids are grouchy they might hurt their friendship with the people they hang out with. Kids who don’t get enough sleep become overwhelmed and sad. Most of the time we can tell when our kids aren’t getting enough sleep. My mom can tell. She struggles to get me up in the morning. If kids don’t get enough sleep, they might not be able to study or concentrate in school (due to lack of sleep) for upcoming tests and homework. The average child needs about 8 or more hours of sleep. Children might need to stay up late to study and don’t get enough sleep. If children get enough sleep because school started later, they would be able to learn and concentrate better. Children would be able to understand better what’s happening in class. They would understand homework and would be able to study better. Children would be able to bring up grades due to getting sleep, better concentrating, and learning. Children would also be able to check any problems on homework in the morning to get better grades. Kids eating breakfast in the morning. Breakfast helps children get enough energy until lunch time. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and without food in the morning children can’t concentrate as well because they don’t have any energy. Children with no energy either fall asleep in class or have trouble learning and concentrating. I urge you to talk to the School Board or even email them. Just make sure they get to this problem and change it. Email them and tell them to have school start at 9:00 and end at 4:00. Alice Frehim Grade 6, Cedar Crest Intermediate
Bus safety concerns Dear Editor, There is an issue arising with students in grades five and six attending the Ferdinand Spiritual Life Center’s Religion classes and get transported back to Cedar Crest. This issue needs to be addressed before someone gets hurt. The problem is when returning to Cedar Crest, there’s only one bus to take all the students; this bus is extremely crowded! Now, you may think a little overcrowding may not sound like that big of an issue, however numerous bad things can happen in close quarters. For example, when all the seats are taken, the only other places are to stand in the aisle, or squish a fourth person to a three-person seat. (This is dangerous, especially considering some students are a lot bigger than others and take up more room. So, some students’ sizes make a three person seat into a two person seat.) This is also difficult because it is hard to get off the bus in a timely fashion, and sometimes students trip over one another. This would really be a problem in an emergency situation where getting off the bus quickly, matters. Also, when students are packed tightly into one spot, they are practically sitting on one another, and that could create an injury, such as fractured bones, or bruised muscles. Another problem that arises by being close together would be that germs can spread quickly and easily, which could be a major problem during cold and flu seasons. (Illnesses could spread to the many different classrooms, causing even more mayhem!) The reason this needs to be addressed is because students could be injured, and some parents may not be aware of the danger. However, if parents knew, they could help support the cause that students grades in five and six attending the Ferdinand Spiritual Life Center’s Religion classes needs another bus for transportation back to Cedar Crest. Dylan Weyer Grade 6, Cedar Crest Intermediate
Dog Park Dear Editor, Almost every day I have to do the same thing with my dog, Keasha, when I let her out to get some fresh air. “Keasha, come here! Where are you?” Those are the exact same words I use when my dog runs off to find something she hasn’t seen before or to find her dog friends. Plus, something else happens all the time with my friend Dylan’s cat, Socks. Every day he wanders off somewhere to find something interesting to do. My solution to this problem is to have a pet Letters continue on Page 37

park. One reason that we should have a pet park is some cats claw things and rip through them like your curtains, pillows, and seat cushions too. Then, there is when cats knock over breakable stuff that you want to keep and it shatters. Just like kids, pets need time and a place to get their energy out and exercise. Instead of having to deal with that, we need a pet park for them to play in. Another reason is that dogs always wander off or try to chew on stuff that aren’t chew toys like shoes, cushions (and occasionally your clothes that you are going to wear tomorrow). If they wander off, they might be kidnapped, thrown in a pound, or the saddest thing, get hit by a car. Because you don’t want your pooch thrown in doggie jail or have a turn at being roadkill, then I suggest we have a pet park. My third and final reason is that dogs and cats are always more healthy when active. If you have a canine that is lying around all day like a couch potato, then why don’t you take it on down for a walk at the pet park. If you have a feline that is just purring and trudging around on all fours all day, take it to see its feline friends at the pet park. If you don’t like it when your dog chases a cat and catches it, then that’s why we can divide the park with fencing so dogs can’t jump over and chase cats and cats can’t be chased. There will be an equal amount of space in both halves. We could host dog shows and cat pageants there, we can host dog trick contests and cats could have soccer matches with a ball of yarn. It would be fun for canine lovers and feline fanatics all over. Let’s face it, if you don’t want your pets to have a seriously boring day every day, then I suggest we build a pet park for them. Re-open restaurant Dear Editor, I think Ferdinand should reopen the Ferdy Flyer because their food was very good. The also had amazing ice cream. The service was awesome and they had a drive thru window. This is why I think Ferdinand should reopen the Ferdy Flyer. Abbagail Collignon Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
Cleaner parks Dear Editor, I think Ferdinand should have cleaner parks because people enjoy spending time at the park and don’t want to pick up other people’s trash. I think the cleaner park are nicer. This is why I think Ferdinand should have cleaner park. Addie Schaefer Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
Closer ice cream Dear Editor, I think Ferdinand should have a Dairy Queen because the closest one is in Huntingburg. On a hat day it would be nice to cool off with some ice cream. It would be nice to not have to drive to Huntingburg or Jasper for ice cream. This is why I think Ferdinand should open a Daily Queen. Adison Begle Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
More skating Dear Editor, I think that Ferdinand should have a Skating Palace with trampolines on the walls so if you run into them then you will not get hurt. It will also be fun. The Skating Palace will have a snack shop with a lot of food and drinks, so people can eat there too. It will be awesome if Ferdinand gets skating palace. I think lots of people would enjoy it. Addison Schneider Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
Water exercise Dear Editor, I think we should have an inside water park in Ferdinand. I think we should get one because we can get exercise and have fun. People would like it and we should be able to go to a water park even though it is winter. Children would all be happy with the indoor water park. Adrianna Brandenburg Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Smaller class sizes Dear Editor, I think Ferdinand Elementary should have smaller classes. If we had smaller classes my teacher would be able to walk around in the class and help more students. She would be able to teach us better if we had less kids. This is why I think Ferdinand Elementary should have smaller classes. Amelia Widolff Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
New student Dear Editor, Hi, my name is Autumn. I am a new student at Ferdinand Elementary School. The kids and teachers are nice. They help me a lot. I like my new school and community. I am in second grade. I moved here in January. Ferdinand is a great place to live! Autumn Lough Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
Donate more blood Dear Editor, I think people should donate more blood. Blood is an important part of the body, and some people don’t have enough. If some people could donate blood, that would be great for someone who needs it. If you donate blood, you could be saving someone’s life. Maybe people have been in car accidents or have a bad illness. They need blood to get better. If you are sixteen years or older and healthy, please donate blood. Brianna Morrison Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
Pool playtime Dear Editor, I think we need a big pool in Ferdinand. It should have slides and other fun stuff for kids. A pool would be great for kids because they could get exercise. They could have swimming lessons at the pool so kids and adults learn to swim. It would be fun for families. A pool in Ferdinand would be awesome! Wyatt Schlachter Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
Help polar bears Dear Editor, I thing people should help polar bears survive in the wild because a lot of ice is melting since it is getting warmer. Polar bears can’t have babies if there isn’t enough food, so polar bears may become extinct. People can help. They can try to use less energy. People can take shorter showers, turn off lights, and don’t watch so much TV. If people use less energy, the world will not be as hot. Be sure to help polar bears and the world by using less energy! Sophia Bettag Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
Classes too big Dear Editor I think Ferdinand Elementary should have more teachers so they could teach more students. We need more teachers so classes are not so big. Right now we have 28 kids in our 2nd grade class and that is way too many students for one teacher. This is why I think Ferdinand Elementary should have more teachers and smaller classes. We would be able to learn a lot more. Zayden Chandler Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
Baseball all year Dear Editor, I think Ferdinand should have an all year round baseball team. Kids like to play baseball and we could play all year long. That way we could become better players. We would know all the plays and get better at them. This is why I think Ferdinand should have an all year round baseball team. Will Steckler Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
Farmers are tough Dear Editor, Farmers have very important jobs. Farmers grow food for people to eat. They raise animals so we have meat. They have milk cows for our milk. They raise chickens to lay eggs for our breakfast. Farmers have a hard job, but do it anyway so people have
food to eat and can stay healthy. Thank a farmer today for all they do for us. Ryles Gogel Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
Quick help Dear Editor, I think we should build an animal shelter that has an animal hospital in Ferdinand. I think that because if there is a dog or any animal that is injured or needs a home, it can get there fast. Then all the animals will be better and safe. All the animals will be happy. When they’re done with surgery and healthy, they can get adopted. The animals would be in a safe place rather than outside in the wild. Also, if there is a pet that got lost and the owner can’t find the pet, the animal truck can find them or at least try their best to find the pet. An animal shelter in Ferdinand would be great for animals and people. Riya Sarver Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
Pool in the park Dear Editor, I think Ferdinand should have a pool close to a park. Some people don’t want to drive to Huntingburg and Jasper just to swim. I think the pool should be indoor. It should be just like Big Splash. I think the slides should spell the name of the pool. This is why I think Ferdinand should have an indoor pool for kids to swim at. Trent Tyree Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
More summer break Dear Editor, I think Ferdinand Elementary should have longer summers because you could spend more time with your family and play outside in the sun. Homework helps you think and it helps you learn more. This is why I think Ferdinand Elementary should have more homework. Anna Muller Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
Shorter summer Dear Editor, I think Ferdinand Elementary School should have a shorter summer break so children can be reading, learning math, reading science, and social studies, and writing. When kids are on summer break they forget what their teachers have worked so hard to teach them. This is why I think Ferdinand Elementary School should have a shorter summer break. Bailey Anderson Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
Improved playground Dear Editor, I think Ferdinand Elementary should have a new playground. If the mulch on our playground gets wet then a lot of children get wet and muddy when we are playing outside at recess. Also, when we can’t play on the playground there are too many kids on the blacktop and this is dangerous. This is why I think Ferdinand Elementary should have a new playground. Braylee Marmolejo Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
Putt putt golf needed Dear Editor, I think Ferdinand needs a putt putt golf course because it might help people. I think it might be good for kids and adults. I bet people would think it is fun. It would give people something to do. Part of the course could be challenging for adults. I think it would be awesome to have a putt putt golf course at Ferdinand. Other people in the area would like it too. Bryce Memmer Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
Community garden Dear Editor, I think Ferdinand should have a community garden. I think it would be good because I like gardening and other people do too. I think people would like a community garden. Gardening is fun. It can help people who don’t have room to grow things. It will also be good since people can grow healthy vegetables. People that know more about gardening can help those that don’t know how to garden. A community garden would be great for the people of Ferdinand. Conner Hochgesang Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
Trampoline park Dear Editor, I would like a trampoline park called Sky Zone in Ferdinand. I think our town is a great place, but a Sky Zone would make it better. It would help our parents have their peace and quiet and let their kids play. Kids would have so much fun, and people wouldn’t have to drive to Evansville. A Sky Zone helps kids get exercise. I think even the parents would enjoy it. A trampoline park would make Ferdinand even better. Gavin Winkler Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
More ice cream Dear Editor, I would like an ice cream shop in Ferdinand. I think people would enjoy it in the summer, and all year round. There is not an ice cream shop in Ferdinand now. Ice cream tastes good and can cool you off in the summer. Lots of different flavors would be good. I think the people of Ferdinand would love an ice cream shop! Jacob Keller Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
Better at baseball Dear Editor, I think we should have all year baseball in Ferdinand because you will get better at it. When you play all year long you will improve your baseball skills. It is fun because you get to hit and you get people out. This is why we should have all year baseball in Ferdinand. Collin Lorey Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
Great School Dear Editor, Ferdinand Elementary is a great school. The teachers help kids. They are really nice. They teach us how to write in cursive. They teach math facts, science, and reading. The teachers help students if they don’t know what to do. Teachers do a wonderful job teaching, so kids do well on ISTEP. Kids are friendly. You will have lots of friends if you come to Ferdinand Elementary. You will love school, just like I do. Jenna Berg Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary
Join marching band Dear Editor, Forest Park Marching Band is cool and students should join. The music is always pretty. The students and directors work hard, but have fun. Student should join band. Help the elderly
Poor need help
Dear Editor, I think people should help elderly, so they can stay healthy. I also think people should help the elderly, so they don’t get lonely. You should help the elderly, because they need help. They need to stay healthy, so they don’t die. To stay healthy they need to take medicine. They can also stay healthy by eating healthy food. When they get sick they need to go to the hospital or the nursing home to stay healthy. They need help so they can remember things. They need help with chores around the house. They need help with getting grocery at the store. If they fall they need your help to get up. I think everyone should help the elderly. The elderly needs your help, so they can stay healthy. Dear Editor, I think you should help the poor more because of these reasons. They need food and shelter. I also think more people should help the poor so they don’t get sick. They could get sick easily because most of them are skinny and you can see their bones. People should also help them because they need food. They need food so they can live. They also need food to stay healthy. They are skinny, because they are not getting the right nutrition for their bodies during to the lack of food. Poor people are usually homeless. You also need to help them by giving them money so they could buy a house. They need a house to stay dry and be out of the weather. I think this is why you need to help the poor. They need food and a place to live. I believe that when you see someone that is sick or need of help you should help them. Andrew Bieker Grade 3, Celestine Elementary
Eating healthy
Avian flu
Dear Editor, I think everybody should eat healthy. If you eat healthy you will stay healthy. Eating healthy is very important. Your body needs nutrition. When you eat healthy it helps your brain. It also helps your muscles. Your body needs vitamins and minerals to fight off sickness. I think everybody should eat healthy to
Dear Editor, Celestine and Dubois were hit by the Avian Bird Flu. Our farmers lost between zero to 6,000 turkeys. We had people walking around in white suits. They looked like they were from another dimension. There were a few big red trucks parked along the side of the road. I wondered why they were there. My dad told me that they were parked there
Dear Editor, I think we need more hotels in Celestine. There are no hotels in Celestine. We should have a nice hotel with a nice pool. The hotel should have a nice deck. Whe it is cold weather the pool should be closed. We should have a nice pool inside too. The hotel should have a dodgeball court in it. The hotel should have 5 floors. The hotel should have a baseball field outside. When it is open they could have a lot of business. Zachary Betz Grade 2, Celestine Elementary

to work with the turkeys. A few days later, when we were driving down to Dubois, we saw a big white and bright light. I though it would blind me, but it didn’t. It was just very, very bright. One day, my grandpa was driving me down to basketball practice and there, at one of the turkey houses were men walking around in white suits. There was one very, very bright light and few trucks parked at that turkey house. When we were hit, it was hard for the farmers and for the communities of Celestine and Dubois, but we got through it for now. Aiden Buechler Grade 4, Celestine Elementary
Learn to swim Dear Editor, I think that kids need to know how to swim, because if a kid goes to the beach and gets knocked down, they could get pushed out to sea. When I went to Myrtle Beach, I got knocked over and it was a lot of pressure that fell on me. I was ok, but if that happened and a person who did not know how to swim, they could have gotten hurt badly. They need to also be safe around pools. A lot of people have pools now. A lot of kids go swimming too. I think it is also very fun. Kelli Merkel Grade 4, Celestine Elementary
Losing Money Dear Editor, I think it is sad that our school corporation is losing money. I it would be nice if people could help donate money. I also think everyone should stay calm! If everyone does not stay calm the school corporation could lose even more money. I hope the school corporation does not lose more money. If it does we might have to do some things we do not want to do. But if people donate money and stay calm, the school corporation might do better! Jennifer Polen Grade 4, Celestine Elementary
Laundry Dear Editor, My worst chore ever is laundry. I hate it! You have to fold it and put it away. If I have to do the laundry, I just put some music on. If our iPad is dead, then I ask my mom to help. If she says no, I turn on the T.V. That is the only way I will do the laundry. When I’m a mom, I’m going to tell one of my children who is 11 years old to do the laundry for me if I still hate it. Who likes to do the laundry? I know I’m not the only who doesn’t like doing the laundry! Ava Brosmer Grade 4, Celestine Elementary
Camping season Dear Editor, Camping season is almost here. Make sure you have proper camping supplies. If you start a fire, you need water nearby. If you don’t put out the fire, it could spread. You always need fire extinguishers in your damper or tent in case of an emergency. When we go camping, my grandma always sits by the fire until it goes out. Many people don’t put out their fire; it can cause a lot of damage. Many animals can die and the trees could burn. Without trees we could lose oxygen. Make sure you put out your fire. Landon Reuber Grade 4, Celestine Elementary
Celestine Dear Editor, I’m glad to come from Celestine, because I’m learning new stuff like match, and I can play outside more. The reason I wasn’t allowed outside as often was, because I lived in a bad neighborhood. Loving in a bad neighborhood is also one of the reasons I moved. Another reason I like it here is because I love country music. I heard that most of the people here mostly listen to country music. I hope that Celestine Elementary doesn’t close down, because Northeast Dubois is running out of money. If I had a thousand dollars I would give five hundred of it to Northeast Dubois. Basketball goals Dear Editor, Why do people damage the basketball goals at our school? The school has to pay for it! They need to stop! The school is not happy when people break it. It also does not let kids play basketball because there is no basketball goal for the kids and the shattered glass takes a while to clean up. Kids also get sad because they don’t get to play basketball. Lots of kids might like to play basketball! So that’s hurting them if other kids break the goals. Some kids need to practice basketball so they can get better. Basketball is a really fun sport to lots of kids and they want basketball goals so they can play it. Also when we go out to recess if the basketball goal is broken then kids can’t play it. I love to play basketball and I don’t want the goal to be broken! Kolin Fleig Grade 4, Dubois Elementary
Interview me Dear Editor, Why don’t you come to the Dubois Elementary and interview the kids? You always go to Dubois High school and interview the people there. You should have a school elementary newspaper section for elementary kids. We would like it if you did because it is always all about the high school basketball, soccer, or other sport teams. If you could that would be outstanding! Mason Breeding Grade 4, Dubois Elementary
Celestine Elementary Dear Editor, I think they should close Celestine Elementary School. Celestine is a old school and is rather small. I think all the kids at Celestine should go to Dubois Elementary. Celestine Elementary is farther away from sports. It would take longer to get to the middle school in the morning and people might be late for a softball or baseball practice or a game. Celestine should not have a bottom level. If a blind child would come they would have a hard time getting from each classroom, getting to recess, going to lunch, and going and leaving school. Landyn Rasche Grade 4, Dubois Elementary
School section Dear Editor, I’m concerned why we don’t have school section in the newspaper! We could get more people (kids) to read the newspaper. We can tell people about how our schools are going. It could be in the newspaper three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Saturday). 1) It could tell parents that we are having trouble with school. 2) Plus kids aren’t wanting the education they use to. Other schools have different subjects and do different things throughout the day. Then we would know extra stuff. We could try different stuff like they are doing. Lorelei Poppe Grade 4, Dubois Elementary
Recess needed Dear Editor, We need more recesses so we can get our energy out. I think we could learn more if we had more recess. We can make health fifteen minutes and science and social studies thirty minutes to make more time for more recess. Karrigen Green Grade 4, Dubois Elementary

New lunch foods Dear Editor, One of the new lunch foods, it’s so delicious, is call rattlesnake bowl. It has chicken tortilla chips but in colorful strips, the noodles that look like straws, I think it’s called ziti noodles, and also queso dip. It sounds like it would be spicy but it’s not. The chips make it crunchy. The chicken makes it juicy. The queso dip makes your mouth sticky, but if you have a drink it’s ok it will wash away the stickiness. Drake Lee Grade 4, Dubois Elementary
Why? Dear Editor, I have a question. Why aren’t there unicorns in the world? Also why don’t we have super powers? Why is our species named human? Why are trees named trees? Why do people breathe oxygen? Why are we in first person instead of third person? Why are there so many different types of boats? I just don’t understand it. Zane Hollen Grade 4, Dubois Elementary
City or country Dear Editor, Would you rather live in the city or country? If you like the sound of car horns, you would like to live in the city. If you like the smell of corn fields, you would like to live in the country. Something they both have in common, is they have sounds, buildings, and they both have animals living there. First of all, they both have sounds. The city’s sounds are cars honking, people talking, and cars driving along the road. The country’s sounds are birds chirping, crickets chirping, and the sound of the wind. In the city it is really noisy. In the country it is very quite. Second is that that they both have buildings. The city’s buildings are sometimes called skyscrapers because they are very tall. In the country you will see a lot of barns and horse stables. The city is more bigger than the country. Last is that they both have animals living in them. The country has more animals living there. In the city you can see a lot off squirrels and pigeons. In the country you can see a lot of wildlife animals. So, where would you like to live? Both the city and country are great places to live in. They both have things to see and do. Which one do you prefer? Kaitlyn Kline Grade 5, Dubois Middle School
Cyber bullying Dear Editor, I hate cyber bullying. It is the worst type of bullying ,and three reasons are any person that is cyber bullied can’t do anything about it, it scares people, and it can be anyone. First of all, anyone who is cyber bullied can’t do anything about it. They have no control over the situation. They can’t rille do anything because its not real. Second of all, it scares people. They may never go on the internet again. It is horrifying because they think it might happen again. And last but not least, it can be anyone. It can be your sister it can be your brother. Their is no limit to who it can be. It could even be your best friend. So in conclusion, cyber bullying is the worst type of bullying because their is so many bad things and three of them are. It terrifies people, the people that get cyber bullied can’t do anything to stop them, and it scares people. Ben Woods Grade 5, Dubois Middle School
Presidential election Dear Editor, Who do you want to become our new president? Do you want a Republican or a Democratic leader? I want a Democratic leader. Democratic leaders are hardworking, honest, and are good at changing the United States/world. First of all, Democratic leaders are hard working. Majority of the past presidents that have been in office have done a lot of work. The Democratic party was used the most. There have been 26 Democratic lead-

ers since Barack Obama. Since they are hard working, more people want them to become our leader. Additionally, Democratic leaders are honest. The Democratic people don’t keep secrets of what their going to do, they tell the public. Democratic leaders tell the public what they honestly think what they should do to America. Last but not least, Democratic leaders are good at changing the United States/ world. Example, Ronald Reagan wanted to tear down the wall of Berlin. Democratic leaders change the world anytime that they have an opportunity. Now that you the public knows that the Democratic side it hardworking, honest, and is good at changing the United States/world do you the public agree? I agree. I want the 2016 president to be a Democratic. Jessa Braunecker Grade 5, Dubois Middle School

Camping games are so fun to play . Camping with family and friends is always a good time. Camping games are a blast and you get to spend time together playing the games. I can’t wait to go camping and you would agree. Camping out in the woods with family and friends is the funniest thing I’ve ever done. Camping is a great experience for everybody. Smoking
Dear Editor, I like the gun law. I think it is a good idea because it keeps bad people from getting guns, you can tell if they use the gun for bad, and so if a bad guy gets a gun you can track it. First reason is it keeps bad people from getting guns. If bad people get guns we will know because the gun shop owner will ask for his id and know if he is bad. That is my first reason. Second reason you can tell if they use the gun for bad. You can tell ,because you know who bought the gun. That is my second reason. Finally you can track the guy. If he buys a gun he will show you his id and you would know who it is. You can track the person. In conclusions the gun law could be very helpful. The gun law could help the government. That is why I think the gun law is important. Brandon Schnell Grade 5, Dubois Middle School
Dear Editor, What if your lungs were being destroyed by smoking, here are three reasons you should stop smoking. Your lungs get destroyed, your skin gets yellow, and your teeth turn black, The first reason that you should not smoke is because your lungs get destroyed. You lose the inflation of the lungs and makes it hard to breath which can lead to suffocation and death. The second reason is your skin turns yellow. Which makes you only attractive to other smokers, and some people may throw you out of certain buildings because its a smoke free zone and your skin is yellow. The final reason is it turns your teeth black. Which makes your teeth weak and easy to bust and shatter. This can make it tough to eat, and can damage your gums as well. Your teeth are very important and you need them. These are only three of the many, many reasons and they are you destroy your lungs, make your skin yellow, and your teeth black which is never good stop smoking. Clayton Stemle Grade 5, Dubois Middle School
Sports Dear Editor, I think when kids get into middle school they will like all the new sports that they will be able to play. My favorite sports are softball/ baseball, soccer, and volleyball. My most favorite sport is softball/baseball. I have been playing it for four years. I love it! There are nine different positions to play there is a spot that you will love. It is a competitive game so, if you are competitive softball/baseball is a sport that you should try! Another sport is soccer. If you like running you need to try this sport. It is fun to ride the bus because, you get to talk with your friends but sometimes the ride can be long. You get to move your feet a lot. I think you should try it! My last sport is volleyball. This sport is fun you do not have to move a lot like in soccer. I don’t know a lot about it but, so far it has been really fun! I do know you have to work well with your teammates so grab a friend and play. All in all I think you would like all the sports. Even if you don’t know how to play try it. You should try softball/baseball, soccer, and volleyball. Aubrey Hostetter Grade 5, Dubois Middle School
Camping Dear Editor, Did you ever go camping. I go camping every year and I always have a blast. Camping is all fun you can play with family and friends, it’s a good way to spend time with family and friends and friends , and you play fun games. I’m always excited to go to Patoka Lake to go camping . Camping is always fun for me. First camping it’s a fun way to get with family and friends you haven’t seen for a while. When I go camping we all get to get together and it’s always fun. I’ m am so excited to go camping with my family because you get to do fun stuff with your family. Camping with family and friends is a blast you get to tell stories eat good food and it’s a blast. Second camping is so relaxing. Camping is relaxing you can sit around the

Ford tractors Dear Editor, Have you ever thought about which tractor is better on a farm? I think that Ford is the best tractor ever because they blow smoke, they are hard to drive, and I like old tractors and Ford are one of them. Fords are better because they blow smoke. New tractors do not smoke because they use ethanol fuel. The reason I like Fords is because I like to see the smoke roll out of the muffler. Fords are also better because they are hard to drive but I like to dive it. Also the clutch is harder to push in but I like to drive it. I have always liked old tractors and Ford is one of them. The old tractors are better than the new tractors. Andrew Cave Grade 5, Dubois Middle School
Love, adopt Dear Editor, Love a pet, adopt a pet. Go to the Humane Society and adopt a cat or dog. The animals need a forever home, they can’t stay in a pen forever. Some dogs get abused, but the volunteers work hard with them to make them safe for you to love. The animals get lonely and sad. Help the Humane Society, help the pets. Go to the Dubois Country Humane Society. Love one, Adopt one. Elizabeth Schepers Grade 5, Dubois Middle School
Recycling Dear Editor, Garbage! It smells bad and looks disgusting. People should think more about trash, however, people throw away 40 percent of all the garbage in the world. Throwing everything in the garbage is not good for the environment. Recycling can solve this problem, so you can preserve natural resources and it would reduce the costs of garbage. We can prevent our country from being covered in trash, recycling will save our resources, and it will make our environment smell and look a lot more cleaner. To start off, we can prevent our country from being buried in trash. Most of the garbage that we through out we can reuse or be recycled to save some of our natural resources. Over half of the trash could be the recycled. If everyone would recycle, our country would be clean. If we all would recycle, our environment would be a lot cleaner. In addition to preventing our country
from being buried in trash, recycling will save some of our resources. Some of the resources we would save are trees, water, energy, and aluminum. By recycling news papers, we can save trees from being took down. We can even save water and energy by recycling. Recycling paper instead of making it from all the trees reduces the the amount of water which is used to make paper. Aluminum cans would be a big save in resources. Finally, recycling would make our environment smell and look a lot more cleaner. If we would recycle, this environment would look and smell way better. By recycling we can make this environment smell regular instead of smelling a dump. If we also recycle, it would make our environment look better. By making it look better, we can keep all of the trash were it belongs. For example, a trash bin or a recycling bin. We need this environment to look and smell better, and we have a solution. Recycling will change our environment to look good and smell better. Obviously we just need to start, so get the bins out! We can prevent our country from being buried in trash, save our resources, and make our environment smell and look a lot more better. We have to save our environment, so start recycling! Evan Mehringer Grade 5, Dubois Middle School
Play tennis Dear Editor, I think everyone should play tennis. It is a very fun and entertaining sport. Anyone could play. All you need to do is practice and practice and practice until you feel good enough to play. It is really not hard at all to play. The reasons you should play are that it is very fun, it is easy, and it gives you something fun to do in the fall. The first reason you should play is that it is a fun sport. When I played last year I had a very fun time playing with my new teammates. I am definitely going to play this year without a doubt. It is seriously that fun. Last year was my first year and I still did good because practicing it is fun like the sport. The second reason is that it is an easy sport. On t.v. it might look hard but when you play tennis it really isn’t that hard. All you want to do is hit the ball inside the lines, if they hit it back you just keep on hitting it. Do that until he can’t hit it back. It really isn’t that hard. You will thank me if you start playing tennis. Finally the last reason you should play tennis is that it gives you something to do in the fall. Sometimes in the fall all you have is sometimes baseball or softball, soccer, or cross country. If you don’t do any of those you should play tennis. If you don’t like tennis well why are you reading this. Anyway you could just play tennis whether or not it is with your family or friends. Those are the reasons you should play tennis. It is fun, easy, and it gives you something to do in the fall. I hope those reasons persuade you to play tennis. I don’t know why you wouldn’t. It is a very fun sport. Corbin Hurt Grade 5, Dubois Middle School
Rainforest Dear Editor, The destruction of natural rainforests has become a big problem. Humans burn these vast forests just to remove a few logs, which leads to major extinction. Loggers tear down the trees that have been growing for hundreds and hundreds of years just to make fancy chairs. We devastate 80,000 acres of rainforest each day, and 135 species of plants and animals become extinct each day. And if we continue this, there will be no trees in the entire world by 2100. We burn thousands of acres of trees each day just to select a few trees, which are used mostly for nothing. Another reason we do this is because we clear away huge swaths of rainforest just for cattle ranching. We must stop this destruction from happening to our world! Extinction is one of the many results of our devastation. All of those fascinating animals, just gone because we constantly kill their homes and food. Think of the sloths. Think of the toucans. Think of the plant life that we are killing without any remorse whatsoever. Please do whatever possible to stop this. Stand up for the environment, and save all those trees and plants and animals.
