Kaitlyn Leonard Grade 2, Fifth Street School

Pick up trash Dear Editor, We should make the earth a better place. So we should pick up trash that is on the grass and in the water. If we litter it can be bad for plants or animals. The water will get so dirty that fish will be bad for people. Fisherman will be sad because they catch the fish. What about poor people? They will also not be healthy with fish or plants. We will not be healthy also without plants, trees. Soon the whole world will be so dirty and no one would be healhty. We should clean up Earth! Mauricio Pozos Grade 2, Fifth Street School

Build more parks Dear Editor, In my opinion Jasper should build more parks. Jasper should build more parks so children can have fun when they exercise. Jasper should build more parks because

Best chicken ever Dear Editor, Do you like KFC? In Jasper I think we should have a KFC. First Kuntchry Fride Chicken is spicey and hot. Second they are tasty and dealeshes. Last it is the best chicken ever. So why don’t we have a Kuntchry Fride Chicken. Myles Haag Grade 2, Fifth Street School

More water slides Dear Editor, The Jasper Pool needs more water slides. The water slides there is only fun for about 5 minutes and then it gets boring. Even when it’s packed and water slide line is long it just gets boring. It’s not even worth it when your waiting in a long line. And that’s why I feel like the Jasper pool should get more water slices. Brayden Clark Grade 5, Ireland Elementary

Preserving nature Dear Editor, As you all know a lot of land where the Jasper Country Club used to be is vacant. There are many ideas of what to do with the land. I think that you should keep it natural. The land is home to many animals and wildlife. Deer and foxes have there homes there. How would you like it if someone destroyed your home? The trees and plant life are beautiful. Don’t cut them down! Did I mention that the lakes are ocupied by wild geese? There is a lot of nature in that land please don’t go destroying it. Ava Collins Grade 5, Ireland Elementary

Dog park Dear Editor, Dogs are pretty important, don’t you think. Well I think they diserve a place to roam around and get to know other dogs. They need a dog park. I have two dogs and they love other dogs and people. If there is a spot in the budget, please do so. Bella Roberts Grade 5, Ireland Elementary

New desks Dear Editor, In school there are a few people who get new desks. But most of the class gets the old ones. That’s NOT FAIR!! The new desks stay open when you open them, while people with the old desks have to hold them up or use a pencil to hold them up. Also, the desks don’t have much room. In my classroom we don’t have lockers so we have to fit 4 text books, 2 notebooks, 4 workbooks, and whatever books and other stuff we have in there. It is quite a challenge to fit everything in there. That is why everybody should get new desks. Grace Helming Grade 5, Ireland Elementary

More cash means more workers. More workers means a lower unemployment rate. This is why you need to renovate Vine Street. Reece Fromme Grade 5, Ireland Elementary

More gym time Dear Editor, I think that we should get more gym time. We only get 25 min of gym. Also I think that we should have gym at least 3 times a week. Having gym will let all of our energy out so we aren’t so jumpy and talkative. Also, most of us love gym. Gym can get us lots of exercise. After all exercise is good for us. Hannah Ruhe Grade 5, Ireland Elementary

Better way to school Dear Editor, I think we need a better way of getting to school. A bus can hold a lot of kid, but it’s boring. Can you add some little monitors/little TVs, so we can watch TV on are way and back from school. Or buy some limos. That is if you have the money. If not stick with the other plan. Or whatever you can aford. Zachary Broeker Grade 5, Ireland Elementary

Water park Dear Editor, We need a water park really bad because Holiday World and Big Splash are to far away. It would be awesome because everyone would go there every day. If you need to get an idea where to build it where the old country club golf course used to be. Tanner Schroering Grade 5, Ireland Elementary

Stop smoking Dear Editor, I think cigars and cigarettes should be illegal. I learned in dare that about 50,000 people die a year because of smoking them. 50,000 people is a lot of people. Nobody wants to die but they will get addicted to it if they have it and when they go to their doctor the doctor will say that they will have a certain amount of years until they die. That is why I think that they should be illegal. Isaac Mehringer Grade 5, Ireland Elementary

School playgrounds

No new church

Dear Editor, My school needs safer equipment. A lot of kids fall from our monkey bars so I think we need rubber mulch. It will not hurt when they fall. Even though its exspensive I think we can still have it. Hannah Allen Grade 5, Ireland Elementary

Dear Editor, I’m here to tell you that the Ireland St. Mary’s church should NOT build a new church. When a church is built it should stay like that forever. Its built for a reason. The way its built is how they wanted it, so it should stay that way because that’s how we wanted it built. There are a few reasons why I think Ireland shouldn’t build a new church. They need to keep the memories that are behind it. We need to help cherish the things that are now in the church. Another reason is I don’t want our parish to look like a community center, because I want it to look old, graceful, and historical. Another reason is I was baptized in it and I made my First Communion in it too. That concludes why I don’t want St. Mary’s to build a new church. Hannah Schwenk Grade 5, Ireland Elementary

More room to swim Dear Editor, Swimming in Jasper is a family fun activity. Currently, Jasper has one swimming pool to accomidate a little over 15,000 people. The Jasper pool was built about 50 years ago. Our current population could have a little over 20% of people over the age of 18 which is prime swimming age. The community should make a new swimming pool to accomidate more people with a more up-to-date slide, locker room, and a more efficient slide. Due the growing Jasper population, it would be more efficient to have a more upto-date swimming area. Since the current Jasper population has nearly doubled since the pool was built, it was meant for a much smaller crowd. This could accomidate the growth of population. I have been to the pool for almost two summers now. Because there are very any recreational swimmers there is no room for lap swimmers to enjoy. If we get a more ideal, and up-to-date pool, the Jasper population will increase. Caroline McCance Grade 5, Ireland Elementary

Vine Street Dear Editor, I think that you should renovate Vine Street. The buildings there are very old. I’ve read in a previous newspaper article that many businesses are being created on that street. If you renovate the buildings the show owners would receive more cash.

More attractions Dear Editor, When you think about the town of Ireland, it needs more attractions. I think a campground would be fun. The only main attraction is the river walk and the river isn’t even in our town. We have a bunch of beautiful land is why I think it would be a good idea. We could donate money to the town if someone wants to do it. We could go swimming, hicking, and more fun stuff in this area. So when you read this I hope you understand and listen because I think it’s a great idea. Aden Bartley Grade 5, Ireland Elementary

New playground Dear Editor, I think Ireland Elementary School should have a new playground. We could replace the rocks with something softer

like grass. It would be better and safer. The rocks could hurt someone. If we had a new playground no one would through rocks at each other. There wouldn’t be any rocks in our school. Rocks get stuck in kids shoes and are brought to their house, as well rocks are very annoying. In conclusion we need a new playground. Carson Chanley Grade 5, Ireland Elementary

Equipment upgrade Dear Editor, I think Ireland youth sports need better equipment for safty reasons and I think we need an upgrade to our equiment like catchers gear. They are really old and dirty. Some of our equipment does not fit. How can that be safe? Our catchers glove and helmets are getting worn out too. We do need new sports gear and it would not cost much to have brand new sports gear but don’t you want your kids playing sports while knowing they are safe playing too. We really need to keep our bodys safe and protected from the hard pitches and our hard hits. That’s why we need new sports gear for our programs. Grant Mehringer Grade 5, Ireland Elementary

Neglected animals Dear Editor, There is an issue that bothers me very much. It is the problem of neglecting animals in pain or need. It seems at least two times each week, if not more, I see, or hear, of an animal that got abused, or neglected. A way to avoid that problem, is to look into peoples back ground a little more carefully. If they have a past of abusing humans, or animals we could potentially help more animals! Also, I don’t want people to think that Duboisians are inhuman towards they animals. So I presume this letter has made you think about many things. Hopefully it is about the animals. Animals are here to be company, and to cheer you up. Don’t neglect the soal that makes you happy. Lydia Grow Grade 5, Ireland Elementary

Rocks don’t rock Dear Editor, There’s rocks everywhere! What I want is no more rocks for our playground. Rocks get us all dirty. We should get recyclable rubber tiles to have so we don’t get dirty. Rocks get stuck in our shoes. Then they end up in the hall or our school, where we have to pick them up before the vacuum does. It just wasted our time. Kids like to throw things. Well, throwing the rocks is bad. One kid got a rock stuck in their ear. Rocks might be fun to play in, but they sure get you dirty. Brown dust covers your body. If we had recyclable rubber tiles, no one would be able to throw rocks, and kids won’t get dirty. Our hall wouldn’t be littered with them. Rocks may be fun to play in, but they have their issues to. This is why we should have recyclable rubber tiles. Kara Krueger Grade 5, Ireland Elementary

Video violence Dear Editor, My name is Devin Burress. I wish there were no more violent video games so there will be no more school shootings. Kids should not play bad games. When kids play bad games they think it’s OK. They should know better than to play violent games. Devin Burress Grade 4, Ireland Elementary

Not an ISTEP fan Dear Editor, My name is Cale Schmitt. I think we should not have ISTEP. If we did not have ISTEP, we could learn more on different subjects like science, social studies and math. Another reason why I don’t want ISTEP is because it takes most of the whole day for school and for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders to do it. Also we can’t study for it. This is why I don’t want ISTEP! Cale Schmitt Grade 4, Ireland Elementary

Benefits of recess Dear Editor, My name is Tanner Erny and I think that all the Greater Jasper schools should get more recess. If you were a 4th grader and you only got 2 recesses and most of the other grades got 3, how would you feel. Also it will make other kids talk other kids into coming to our school corporation, because we get more recess than them. If more kids come it will bring in more money. This will enable to schools to get more balls, playground equipment, and books for the library. It might enable us to get new technologies, wich will help our school corporation by giving us better resources to use. If we have better resources we can learn alot faster. That will interest the parents and they might send their kids to our schools. That will bring in even more money. This is why I believe all of the Greater Jasper schools should get more recess. Tanner Erny Grade 4, Ireland Elementary

It’s a zoo out there Dear Editor, My name is Aiden Pieper. I think we should have a zoo in Jasper. One reason I think we should have a zoo is because I love animals, and I know a lot of people who like animals too. I also think we should have a zoo because most animals live a lot longer in captivity. It is also a good place to go on weekends and see some interesting animals. I also think we should have a zoo in Jasper because some animals are just so big that I could just watch them all day long. Oh I just love animals. They’re so cool to watch and learn about. There are many reasons for having a zoo in Jasper. Aiden Pieper Grade 4, Ireland Elementary

Field trips Dear Editor, My name is Ella Sermersheim. I think we should have more field trips. If we did I think we would have more fun. The teachers would be happier too. It is not just fun for us, it is fun for the teachers. Maybe we could go to the Herald and get a tour and see how it all works. It would be fun if we could go to a zoo. That is why I believe that we should have no more field trips. Ella Sermersheim Grade 4, Ireland Elementary

An inside pitch Dear Editor, My name is John Kemker. I think we should have an indoor baseball practice facility at the Ireland baseball fields. I think we should put that in there because league teams would be able to practice when it’s cold out. We could also practice in the winter for all-stars and travel baseball. I think we should do it because kids and their parents will be able to practice in the winter. John Kemker Grade 4, Ireland Elementary

Call for a mall Dear Editor, Hi. My name is Claudia Buschkoetter. I truly think we should have a mall in Jasper, IN. It would be great! Just think of it. People would never run out of supplies again. We would have more jobs for people who need them. The population might get bigger. That means more citizens in Jasper would be able to do their jobs and make homes for that more percent of people. Would you like to travel to Evansville or father just to go to a nice mall? That is what I always have to do. The mall could be connected on top of Walmart. Then, Walmart would make an elevator that goes up to the mall and back down to Walmart. Trust me, it would be excellent! Haven’t you always wanted to have a mall by you? I always have. You know that we don’t have Starbucks, Target, or many other stores. Well, now we can put those stores in the new mall. The people that work there will probably get a lot of cash to help them pay for their everyday living. Well, I thought those were some pretty good ideas. If you decide to make a mall, then that would be outstanding. Claudia Buschkoetter Grade 4, Ireland Elementary Continued on Page 9.

Freedom Dear Editor, I think that we should have freedom to the world so everyone can just be free. They can do anything they want but they would also have to follow the rules to. Thats why we should have freedom. Jade Nord Grade 3, Tenth Street Elementary

Save trees Dear Editor, I think poeple shold try to save trees and I will tell you why. Trees clean our air. Trees provide shade for us in the summer. They provide homes to sqirrels and birds. Acorns come from trees and acorns are food to many animals and this is why I think people should save trees. Levi Steffy Grade 3, Tenth Street Elementary

Town improvements Dear Editor, I like the town but I think we should improve. We should buy more land and build a park and fountain in the middle. We should also have more safety buildings like fire houses and police stations and hospitals so if we were in a wreck and you wern’t close enough to a hospital there would need to be a closer one. Or if there’s a fire and the fire house is to far away, you need a closer one. This is why we need more hospitals, fire houses, and police stations. We should plant 5 trees for every one cut down to build a house. That is why I think we need to build more things. Olivia Steltenpohl Grade 3, Tenth Street Elementary

Gas prices Dear Editor, I think gas prices are to high. I think they need to be lowered to 2.25 or 1.99. My parents have two cars each so I think they should actually be 1.99. Now I know if the state does not change it I know to get a car that dos not take a lot of gas. Madysen Sutton Grade 3, Tenth Street Elementary

Lion Dear Editor, I always wanted to see a lion. I think Jasper should have a zoo so people can see animals they have never seen. But I am afraid that I’ll get scared. Now I know Jasper needs a zoo. Joshua Trinidad Grade 3, Tenth Street Elementary

Lucky dog Dear Editor, I have a very special dog named Dixie. She is very lucky to be an inside dog. When I drive with my dad, I always see dogs tied to trees. I hate when people tie their pets to trees. At night I ask myself, Can they survive? Did they drop dead? Why? I think who ever puts animals on trees need to ask themselves these questions. Sara Leonard Grade 3, Tenth Street Elementary

Skyscraper Dear Editor, I wish they could build a huge skyscraper in Jasper, because we don’t have any skyscrapers. It could be used for people to play tennis on the top of it. I think that would be fun. Christian Valenciano Grade 3, Tenth Street Elementary

Girls baseball field Dear Editor, I think we should have a new baseball field for the girls to play on. It would be fun to have a baseball field for the girls. Madison Roach Grade 3, Tenth Street Elementary

NIE ■ PAGE 9

churches do. People want to know what’s going on in diffrent churches and what they do. Like for an example what diffrent bands they have and what they do! Gabrielle Ross Grade 3, Tenth Street Elementary

Smoking Dear Editor, I think people should stop smoking. Do you? Why? Because it’s bad for them. Smoking does bad things to kids. It’s bad for them because they can get sick. I think you should stop smoking in the car when you’re driving. Smoking is bad for our land. So never get close to people smoking. Michael Rivas Lovo Grade 3, Tenth Street Elementary

Exercise Dear Editor, Everybody should be healthy every single day! Just exercise, eat fruits, drink water, and eat vegetavles. Now go out and exercise! Don’t be lazy! Stop eating junk food! Exercise right now! If you want information call me! Thank you very much! Ana Sandoval Grade 3, Tenth Street Elementary

Texting, driving Dear Editor, I wish texting and driving would stop! You could die or get a really bad injury. Especally if you have kids in your car you are putting them in really bad danger. Don’t even text when you are at a red light. You could text at home. You also can text at your destination. I hope whoever is texting and driving would get arrested. You might even kill someone innocent. You dont want to do that! Jesus Dominguez Grade 4, Tenth Street Elementary

Download Dear Editor, Tenth Street School would be a lot better if we could bring electronics to school. We could play video games on our devices. We could silent read on our device. We could download books on ebooks. We could type and print on our devices. We could learn more on google. We could download renaisssance place on our device. Austin Perry Grade 4, Tenth Street Elementary

Exercise Dear Editor, I would like to say something if I may? At Tenth Street Elementary they want us to be healthy, but we only have 30 minutes of gym time. Yet we only have an hour of computer. I think we should have an hour of gym instead of 30 minutes. We don’t have enough time to exercise! Sometimes we only do stretches, but we are supposed to do games or something. We didn’t have enough time. I’m just saying we should have an hour because we could have 30 minutes of stretches and 30 minutes of games. Kaylin Mercer Grade 4, Tenth Street Elementary

Not cool Dear Editor, I believe the citizens of Jasper should not cuss. It is not cool to cuss. All it does is get you in trouble and hurts people’s feelings. Parents should not let there kids cuss. No offense but that’s kinda being a bad parent (don’t murder me). If you are a parent that lets your kids and yourself cuss you’re not just hurting yourself and your kids but everybody that picks it up. That is why I think people should not cuss. Hannah Flamion Grade 4, Tenth Street Elementary

Dog park Dear Editor, I think we need a dog park. We need a dog park because we need a place for dogs to run. We also need one so dogs don’t need to stay on leashes. Also for all the owners to meet and talk. Also so all kinds of dogs can play. Cody Nash Grade 4, Tenth Street Elementary

Farm zoo Dear Editor, I think we need to have a farm animal zoo. It would be neat to have farm animals in Jasper. I think little kids need to see farm animals. Adults and kids might want to see farm animals. Thats why I think we should have a farm animal zoo. Rileigh Foxen Grade 4, Tenth Street Elementary

don’t need video games. Don’t just sit down, let’s invent something! I know what we could invent, a toy that we could play with outside and inside. If your house is full, go outside or somewhere else to work. Then just start working. When you’re done look at your invention. What can it do? Then if it’s useful, everyone will use it. This is why we should invent things. Lacy Huckelby Grade 3, Tenth Street Elementary

Community garden

Captivity

Dear Editor, I wish we could have a community garden where people could go out and sit and look at beautiful flowers and other plants. You would have a place to just relax. I’m sure a lot of people love to garden and help out. I would help. I like to garden with my Dad. I also wish for a dog park for dogs just to play and run around. I know my dog Sugar loves to run and play. So if you would, please consider a garden and a dog park. Hannah Rottet Grade 4, Tenth Street Elementary

Dear Editor, A lot of people have watched the movie Blackfish. Well, I refuse to. They are just giving opinions. What people don’t know is that if they let the oreas free, they’re going to die in a matter of weeks, if not days. Plus, Sea World isn’t the one who takes the oreas out of the wild, they get them from other zoos, and aquariums. Grant Hawkins Grade 5, Tenth Street Elementary

Dear Editor, I think Tenth Street School judges need to pick people with real costumes. It’s not fair to other people that did wear real costumes. Other kids might think that you’ll win and you don’t. That is not right. I mean, who would really pick people that put a lot of work into there costume, but don’t look that good. Amal Williams Grade 5, Tenth Street Elementary

Dear Editor, I think we should use solar power to activate cars, houses, motorcycles, farms, and factories. I think we should do this because the vehicles and factories release bad and dangerous chemicals in the air in cites. Soon smog hangs in the air and is bad to breath. When we use fuels like natural gas, coal, and oil too much and too often, they will run out very soon. In that case, we should be prepared with solar panels. They make them for toy cars, so why not make them bigger? And instead of wasting them for little cars, keep them to make huge solar panels! Also cars and houses use too much fuel. For the cars, put solar panels on the roof and hood of the car. Also houses should have them on their roofs. They could also use fire to heat up the houses, but that wastes trees that take a long time to grow. Most importantly, there is almost always sun. At night, scientists could find a way to store the energy from the sun’s rays. On the extra sunny days, that’s when they could store a ton of extra energy. That’s why I think everyone should use solar power Paige Schotanus Grade 4, Tenth Street Elementary

Build homes Dear Editor, I think we should raise money to build homes and give food to the poor and homeless. I think that we should do this because it would help to prevent suffering for the poor and homeless. It also would be a good idea because it would help protect more people. I think it would be a good idea because the homeless and poor would be able to have nutritious food. Just because people may have bad situations or don’t have any money they should still have clean and comforting homes to live in. That’s why I think we should raise money to give the poor and homeless food and homes. Lexi Freyberger Grade 4, Tenth Street Elementary

Water park Dear Editor, I think the city of Jasper needs a water park to have lots of fun. The only reason I think we should have a water park is that I always go to water parks far, far, far away. So I thought we should have one here. Another reason is because we could lower the prices of food, tickets, and drinks. Also we can make all sorts of games and rides that can be spectacular. I would love to have a water park in Jasper. It would be the best thing ever. So this is what I want for the city of Jasper Jared Craven Grade 3, Tenth Street Elementary

Inventions Dear Editor, I think we should start inventing new things. We don’t need video games and TV’s. We should use the things around us like sports, and other things. We should invent spectacular things, such as a new sport. We

School lunches Dear Editor, School lunches are terrible. They taste horrible. Im sorry but they’re gross. I know all my friends agree. So could they have better food choices. They could have blueberries, bannanas, strawberries and a lot of other things. So could they just have better lunches. Kylie Cates Grade 5, Tenth Street Elementary

Backpacks Dear Editor, We don’t need backpacks because with all the tests, books you could hurt our backs, but we should have mini-I pads they’re light, have everything we need, and there fun, and we don’t need computers and more. Alex Porros Grade 5, Tenth Street Elementary

Cyber bullying Dear Editor, Cyber bullying is a big problem right now. Many kids have some kind of online account like Facebook or Instagram, which they could easily be cyber bullied on. I think kids need to realize what they are doing to someone when they are cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is a very important subject. Nearly 43 percent of kids are cyber bullied and 1/4 of kids have had it happen more than once. Cyber bullying is like bullying, but online. Though it’s much worse, there is no escape. If you are cyber bullying someone, stop! If someone is cyber bullying you tell a teacher or a trusted adult. Never bully and definitely don’t cyber bully! Amanda Schnell Grade 5, Tenth Street Elementary

Arcade Dear Editor, I wish for schools to have an arcade. The reason why is because people like to be entertained. The kids would probably be focused more. It will be a AR point reward. You have to get 20 AR points to go to the arcade. There will be education games like Pacman. There will be lots of fun games. So just trust me it will be fun. It will be fun. So please concider my idea. Kade Jochum Grade 5, Tenth Street Elementary

with their families they have fun, and get to know each other more than they already do. Golf is a family sport, and is for all ages so no one will be left out. Don’t you think so too? Golf can make friends, and families come together more. You can invite your friend, and his/her family to come, and golf with you. You get to know your friends and their families more. For a birthday party you can invite your classmates there. Golf can get kids to be more healthy, and play the sport with their families. Do you know why? This is because it is a fun activity to play, and it gets kids want to always play the sport and be healthy. Thank you for reading this, and have a great day. Animal abuse Dear Editor, Animals all over the world are being abused. The owner takes the dog outside locks him in a cage deep in the woods never feeds him or gives him water. It is plain awful. If I ever see anyone abusing an animal I’m sorry, but I will have to call the police. I need to step up and stop animal abuse. Please don’t wack your dog or hit him. That is just heart breaking for them and other people. Think what you do and fix it! Hudson McCune Grade 5, Tenth Street Elementary

Summer break Dear Editor, “Ring!” The school bell rings on the last day of school. Everyone heads straight out the door and onto the bus. Summer break has arrived! But I was wondering, how come we only have two and a half months of summer? Why can’t summer break be longer! Well, I think it should be longer! We should have four months of summer! I think four months of summer would be great because then people could do more fun things like swimming, golf, basketball, etc. Summer being longer would be the best thing ever! Isabella Ross Grade 5, Tenth Street Elementary

Stress reliever Dear Editor, I think people should visit the Jasper Humane Society more often. I mean, if you think about it, those dogs are cats get super lonely. The more and more people that visit the Humane Society, the more people adopt a pet. And having a pet relieves a lot of stress. So the next time you’re feeling stressed, or have free time at all, go visit the Humane Society! Haley Love Grade 5, Tenth Street Elementary

Ipads Dear Editor, I think Tenth Street School, Jasper Middle School and Jasper High School should have Ipads because kids have to carry their heavy books. They can learn more things from the Ipads. That my story. Kerrigan Wagoner Grade 5, Tenth Street Elementary

Trash Dear Editor, I think people should throw away there trash in the proper area not on the ground. Kaylynn James Grade 5, Tenth Street Elementary

Traffic guards Dear Editor, I strongly believe that school traffic in Jasper is a hazard. Somebody is bound to get hurt at the intersection of 36th Street and St. Charles. There are many reckless drivers passing through the intersection, which makes it dangerous for kids to cross. To solve this immediate problem, I think there should be a couple of traffic guards to help direct the drivers. This would slow the drivers’ speed and help ensure the safety of the students walking and biking to and from school. I believe the students’ safety is at stake without a traffic guard. Night terrors Dear Editor, Night terrors? Where do these terrors come from? Movies have ratings for a reason. Kids don’t need to be watching PG-13 or R rated movies or the prieviews. The innocent children will have night terrors or terrors just from watching T.V Kids don’t intend to watch PG-13 or R rated previews, but it’s just another commercial. These bad influences for children need to stop before the kids get used to the violence! Movie producers want to advertise their movies, we get it. We just need the producers to realise what there doing to children. Producers only see their side of the commercial when they need to see both sides. An alternative to this R or PG-13 situation is to only let movie producers advertise movie on adult T.V. programs. Its just not right to scare children in any way. When a person goes to the movie theator, if you ask for a ticket to a movie and you are underage for that movie, you won’t be allowed to go into that movie. There’s a reason. My question is why are children allowed to see the previews for the PG-13 or R rated movies. Breann Mehringer Grade 6, Jasper Middle School

Professional baseball Dear Editor, Have you ever been to a professional baseball game in Indiana. No, because Indiana doesn’t have a professional baseball team. I believe that Indiana should get a professional baseball team to play in the MLB, and here is why. It would attract more people to Indiana and to watch them play. There would be more rivalries in the MLB and people like to come to the games when they play their rivals. Rivalaries, there could be fights and the crowd likes to see fights, and possibly it could attract more people to their next game. The kids in Indiana would have bigger dreams to be a professional baseball player because now there is a professional baseball team in their home state and the might want to play close to where the live so there family can come to watch them. There would be more professional players in the MLB because if Indiana got a MLB team they would have to get some players, so they would have to bring more players in the MLB. That is why I want a professional baseball team in Indiana. Jake Bonifer Grade 6, Jasper Middle School

Better way Dear Editor, School uniforms should be enforced at Jasper Middle School for multiple reasons. The dress code would be easy to follow; wear your uniform. It’d be easier on the teachers to see who was and wasn’t following the dress code, or wearing their uniform. The teachers, when they see someone who wasn’t wearing their uniform, would just confront them about it and give them their punishment. School uniforms would also save money. There wouldn’t need to be any school clothes bought, just a couple of uniforms. Statistics also show that the better kids are dressed, the better they learn. Bullying, some verbal, some physical, some even mental, there’s many different types of bullying and many different reasons to do it. One of which being clothes, if your clothes are too childish, too pricey, too cheap, too much of anything on your clothes gives kids a reason to make fun of them. But, if everyone is wearing the same thing, the same way, there’s no point to making fun of somebody for what they’re wearing. With school uniforms Jasper Middle School could learn more efficiently, stop some bullying, save money, and look good while doing it. Jurney Sturgeon Grade 6, Jasper Middle School

Physical activity Dear Editor, Should kids in the middle school and high school be able to have recess or another type of physical activity session besides Physical Education/Gym? My answer is yes because about half of all U.S. kids are overweight and twenty-five percent of those ahave diabetes. Also with recess,

kids can take a break from classwork and be able to exercise besides the walk from their locker to the lunch room. At recess kids can hang out with friends and have fun and mess around, with some limits of course. At recess kids should be able to do all the same things elementary kids can do and more, such as eat snacks, run around, or even just relax on the plush green grass. If it was raining or snowing or just really cold outside, kids could come inside and play basketball, zumba or another workout video, play other indoor sports, or even just hang out with friends. Ryan Terwiske Grade 6, Jasper Middle School

Homeless animals Dear Editor, If you havn’t noticed there are many stray, homeless animals running around Jasper. Don’t you feel bad? Pets are like humans and all humans deserve a house and a nice family. Don’t let your pets rome free and get hit by a car. You don’t do that to humans so why do it to pets. They deserve the best of what they can have. Just because their sometimes smaller then us doesn’t mean you can just kick them around. Treat pets how you want to be treated. Riley Merder Grade 6, Jasper Middle School

Tank tops Dear Editor, I believe that students at JMS should be allowed to wear tank tops to school. I believe this because, as long as it’s monitored and there are rules about the neckline and things like that, there’s not any harm in showing shoulders. Armpits don’t seem particularly inappropriate, either. Sometimes in gym, or even in class, it can get very hot, too, and tank tops could help with that. Less smelly kids ultimately means a better smelling school after al. If you can manage to keep kids from sweating so much, they wouldn’t smell. Let’s face it, it doesn’t matter how much deodorant, perfume or cologne they use, it’s still pretty bad. Also, a lot of shirts fall off shoulders or don’t go down all the way. If tank tops were allowed, that would make tops like that available to wear to school, as well. In today’s fashion, a lot of thick strapped tank tops are commonly worn but can’t be at school. This is why I believe that tank tops should be allowed in school. Taylor Lammert Grade 6, Jasper Middle School

4-H fair Dear Editor, Recently, we have found out that the 4-H fair schedule has been altered so that more of the main activities will be on the weekend instead of through the week. Since many people work through the week, it will bring more veiwers to watch the shows in the grand stand area. Also, lots of people do not get to walk through the exhibit buildings where kids have worked all year on their projects. Its a shame that many people do not get to see all of the talent that we have in Dubois County. Another change is the animals. We now have to bring our cows over on a Tuesday morning. They stay until Sunday. The dairy cattle only stay for two days now. The other animals’ departure schedule has probably changed too. Although this may get some people upset about the fair being moved, I think it is a good change. It will allow more people to enjoy the 4-H fair. Abby Fischer Grade 6, Jasper Middle School

Games at school Dear Editor, I think that we should be able to play games during school. After you are done with all of your work then you should be able to. If we are able to play games it decreases our chances of talking because we have something to do. Kids talk alot because we have nothing to do after all our work is finished. Most games are appropriate for school. It would make kids more excited about coming to school because they would be able to play games after their work is work is done I also think that kids should have a little bit of time to get their minds off school and play games. At the end of the day, everyone is tired and just wants to go home.

I think the last 20 minutes of school should be where you are able to play games. Kids would also enjoy coming to school more. Chloe Rohlman Grade 6, Jasper Middle School

Trash Dear Editor, When my mom and I drive around Jasper we both notice how much trash there is. I think we should cut down on people litering. Every person that is caught litering should be find doubled what is now. By cutting back on litering we would have a happier, cleaner, and more pleasent community. Also we could save some animals life. Instead of just throwing your plastic bottle out the window recycle the bottle. Do us all a favor and convence the people of Jasper to respect the community to recycle instead of litering. Nolan Pfister Grade 6, Jasper Middle School

Orchestra Dear Editor, How would you like to hear the sweet sounds of instruments flowing smoothly through the air? I wish I could, and we can if Jasper forms an orchestra! I believe Jasper should create an orchestra because studies show that music helps clear the mind, and helps people concentrate whether it’s school work or at home tasks. I feel Jasper should also have an orchestra because people who want to be in a orchestra have to travel to Evansville or Owensboro at least once a week just to do something that they have a passion for. This is why I think Jasper should create an orchestra. Annie Donato Grade 6, Jasper Middle School

Free time Dear Editor, When you were in elementary school didn’t you just love getting to be able to leave lunch to go to recess? Well I know I did and now that I’m at JMS I know longer have the privilege of going to play and run around after lunch. Adults are always saying we need to go and play to burn off some energy. Whenever I hear this I wonder when they expect us to be able to. Now that we’re in middle school we have more homework than in elementary and are more busy. At JMS we have homeroom and study hall, but not all people have study hall. Even if you do finish your homework you likely have to study and read for AR. Being able to have recess is a privilege and I’m not saying we should have exactly recess, but we should have the option of going and playing after lunch. I believe allowing us to be able to run and play will have many benefits. For one we will burn off energy and possibly relieve some stress. Kimber Schnarr Grade 6, Jasper Middle School

Pointless Dear Editor, I believe that middle and high schools should not be forced to do Newspaper Education Week. I think that Newspaper Education Week for middle and high school students is boring, childish, pointless, and a waste of time. Newspaper Education Week is pointless to middle and high school students because they already know where the sports section, comics, and many other sections are at because in elementary schools taught you that for five years. It is also pointless because many teens like myself don’t read the newspaper, we just watch it on the television. Newspaper Education Week is boring because most teens have been doing the same thing for it that they don’t even care about it and they don’t even try to work on the project so it’s just a waste of time for the teachers and the students. Last of all, Newspaper Education Week is childish because most teens don’t want to draw an advertisement for some business that they already know about or that they already patronize. I hope that you take my perspectives of Newspaper Education Week and not require middle and high school students to do it. Logan Chanley Grade 7, Jasper Middle School Continued on Page 13.

Mixed messages Dear Editor, Students are told to stay home when we are sick. Then we are told we need to come to school every day to keep our attendance up. That is very confusing. I mean would the school rather have a kid come to school and get 10 kids sick for two days, or have one kid sick for a day? They should be happy we are not coming to school when we are sick. They should not punish us. That is not right. Students’ dress code is determined by our attendance rate, that’s not right, it should be lowered in the winter due to illnesses. The teachers and staff are sending the kids mixed messages. We are told not to come to school when we are sick, but then they take away our relaxed dress code. We cannot help it if we are sick, it’s not like we can just poke ourselves and be all better. It takes time to get rid of a cold, strep throat, or the flu. Doesn’t the school want us home when we are sick? If they want the attendance to link to our dress code then they should lower the requirement in the winter. In the fall and spring it is less likely to get sick, but in the winter normally everyone gets sick at least once. Our attendance requirement is 98.5% all year long. They should lower it to 95% in the winter. Our relaxed dress code almost always gets revoked once in the winter because of sick kids. Why are they punishing us for what nature is doing? It gets cold in the winter and that makes kids sick. When students skip school they should be only punished, not the whole grade. Students who skip school should be punished on their own. The teachers should give them a punishment, such as an after school or noon detention. The whole grade should not be punished for those students who don’t want to come to school. We as students should not be punished for being ill, and then not come to school because of it. That is just sending mixed messages to students when we are told to do something and then punished for doing what we are told. Amelia Kiefer Grade 7, Jasper Middle School

Military women Dear Editor, Within the past few decades more and more women have been present in the United States military. They have worked their way up from nurses to being “on the front lines.” You would think they are allowed to go into any branch of the military they would like, all but one. From the Army’s Delta Force and Green Burets, to the spies at the NSA and CIA, there are women present in their programs. The most prestigious programs in the United States are co-ed, we even have just had our very first five star Navy Admiral women appointed by the president, but not even she was a Navy SEAL. I’m not saying they have the right to be a Navy SEAL or anything but since it’s been proven that women observe detail and are more patient than most men, two of the main qualities it takes to be a successful sniper, which would mean they could be a good asset to most military operations. Now BUD/s training that the Navy SEALs go through is the hardest and most rigorous training known to man ... some Iron Man triathletes can’t even make BUD/s. So I don’t know how hard it would be for a woman to be accepted into the Navy SEALs but I say they should at least have a chance. Any person who could possibly be a valuable asset in combat should at least be heard out. As one thirteen year old boy, Hunter Scott, once proved to the Navy, size doesn’t matter. (He was thirteen and proved the Navy wrong in court!) This comes to prove that anyone can do anything they put their mind to. To fix this, I would more than likely just let women try ... the odds are they won’t make it, but odds are meant to be beat and rules are meant to be broken. All people deserve to at least have a chance at something, if not how will they know there was a chance. If someone could be helpful, let them help, you never know when you might need their help. Drug abuse Dear Editor, There is a horrible thing going on, its called drug abuse. It’s when someone takes a medicine or illegal drug, just to make

NIE ■ PAGE 13

them feel funny. Some of these drugs are prescribed by doctors, but some people find a way to get them without going through a doctor. Some people grow their own drugs, but I don’t get why they want them, it just hurts themselves. Drug abuse is a horrible thing that we have to get rid of. The problem here is that people are getting illegal drugs that they don’t need. People use drugs and cause horrible accidents that could seriously injure someone or kill them. Drugs can also hurt the user manually by damaging the user’s body. The drugs can also hurt a person’s brains itself. One solution is that people could stop others from getting drugs in the first place. Pharmacies could make certain things that are restricted from some people. Some people grow their own drugs so people could stop others from growing it in the first place. People could just choose not to use drugs. Maybe the cops could just do a better job of taking them away. Cops could find drugs and take them away from people. Worried family members could take them away from them. Family members could then report them to the cops. In conclusion there is a lot of ways to stop drug abuse. Why haven’t the cops or other people that are against it, been able to get rid of the problem? Sully Maher Grade 7, Jasper Middle School

Decisions Dear Editor, The politicians of today can never reach decisions amongst themselves, and many people wish they would just come up with some solutions already, besides postponing them. The students of today are the politicians of tomorrow, and if we are not educated enough, we may never learn to fix the major problems that were brought on by our parents and grandparents: economic crises and high tensions between countries. Without a solid education, we won’t be able to fix economic problems. It’s hard to figure out solutions to an entire country’s debt without advanced math classes. America’s students are not being challenged enough in classrooms. We need to be made aware of real-world situations where countries and people have gone into debt so that we can strive to get out of it. A good education cannot be achieved if the students aren’t challenged by the materials that they’re learning. Foreign languages need to be available earlier, and there needs to be a wider variety of languages offered. High school credits need to be made available at least by the seventh grade. Right now, you can only get high school credits in eighth grade. Going back to the real-world situations, there needs to be more current news in social studies classrooms. Instead of learning about how pyramids were built, we need to be learning about why countries are going to war and exploring options that would help keep everyone happy. Although ancient languages and structures can be interesting, they can be useless. The difficulty level of classes can be bumped up in many ways. First, grades should be missed so that everyone falls into their appropriate learning level. Then, there needs to be more teachers. Students should be pushed to their full potential in classrooms. When problems aren’t fixed, they become more serious, and then lead to even more problems. If everyone strives for better educated children, we can solve the problems left to us by previous generations. Brooke Flannagan Grade 7, Jasper Middle School

Focus matters Dear Editor, Have you ever thought about how the United States would be different if the U.S. focused all of its power on the matters inside this country? If the United States focused its power on internal affairs rather than on external affairs, a lot more would happen. There would be many problems solved. The United States would be able to solve many problems here on home soil if it would address the internal affairs before the external affairs. The U.S. needs to try to solve problems like homelessness in the U.S. before it worries about some other country thousands of miles away. The United States could use the money spent on care packages and other aid programs to improve roads and many other things. Homeless people could get more care once the U.S. realizes

that there are just as many problems at home as there are in some other third world country. The United States would have more money and resources to fix the many needs and to make this country more comfortable and also to make this country a better living environment for everyone in the U.S. The United States should be able to see through the fog that obscures their view of this country and realize that a nation’s own issues are more important than issues 6,000 miles away in a different country. I believe the U.S. needs to address the issues at home first. The problems closest to us are more important than those far away. The United States needs to worry about the more important problems that affect the U.S. citizens before sending care packages thousands of miles away. Damon Hayes Grade 8, Jasper Middle School

Styrofoam cups Dear Editor, Last week at school we had chicken noodle soup. I mean I like the soup and all, but it was in a Styrofoam cup, what is up with that? I don’t think that Styrofoam cups are very environmental friendly, and we have good enough bowls and big dishwashers to wash them so why wouldn’t we use them. I do not like this because when I get older I want the earth to be the same as it is now where we sometimes reduce, reuse, and recycle. I don’t think that you can recycle Styrofoam. Even though they used the Styrofoam bowls, I think we should go back to using the regular bowls. This will save the school more money and then we will have more money to by more technology to help us in school and make our lives easier. In conclusion I don’t mind the fact that we used Styrofoam cups to put our chicken noodle soup in, because it still tastes good and nothing was wrong with it but I don’t know if it will help us in the long run. Noah Mendel Grade 8, Jasper Middle School

Be thankful Dear Editor, There is a lot for us to be thankful for. We live in a country that allows us to be free. A country that allows us to voice our opinion and believe in what we want to believe in. However, I think that a lot of the time, we forget about those who have granted our freedom and continuing to fight for it right now. Our soldiers risk their lives to defend us and our country everyday, every second. I do not think that they get all of the respect their deserve. They are away from their families and their loves ones for very long amounts of time. They give up sitting on the couch, watching television, and eating take-out pizza with their best buddies. Not to mention all of the other things that they have to go through. Maybe seeing their best friend die, or get very close to dying, right in front of them. Or maybe even them being the ones close to dying. Seeing their lives flash before them, thinking everyday when they wake up to make it count because they do not know if they will be coming back. All in all, I think that we should all take a step back and look at what we have. Everything does not always have to be the best of the best to make it special. Living in this country alone should make us all very appreciative and grateful. Many of us need to start looking on the positive side of things instead of the negative. For example, noticing the people that fight for us day and night in a foreign land for people they do not know. The least we could all do is say thank you and be thankful that we have brave men and women who are willing to put their lives on the line for us. Addie Bueltel Grade 8, Jasper Middle School

Guns in school Dear Editor, I recently read in the newspaper how the State of Indiana is considering making it legal for individuals to bring guns to their local schools. While I understand guns cannot be brought into the school, the thought of having them in someone’s car in the parking lot makes me angry and frightened. A school is a place that is for learning and enjoying the time with friends. It should be a place we can go to everyday

without worry or fear. By allowing guns at the school facilities, this will make the kids feel uneasy. We will all fear that someone could go to their car and bring the guns into the school in a matter of minutes. I hope our local legislators reconsider the bill they are voting on and continue to make it illegal to have a gun on school property. We need our schools safe with the best possible environment for us to be kids and enhance our learning ability. Jacob Lents Grade 8, Jasper Middle School

Pacers Dear Editor, How about those Pacers, aren’t they great! Number one overall in the league. I believe they will win the championship. The Pacers are just unstoppable this season, they’re are at a .767 win percantage. As well as having two All-Stars on the team. But I think Lance Stephenson should have been one, he has four triple-doubles. Thats the most in the league. The Pacers have just been awesome this season. And will continue to win this season, as well as the seasons to come. Watch out NBA, the Pacers are coming! Ryan Ewing Grade 8, Jasper Middle School

Lunches not clear Dear Editor, There needs to be a change to school lunch menus. This may sound strange, but it’s true. The lunch menus that are in place now are not clear enough; they do not state exactly what sort of food we are having. This causes poor, innocent children like myself to spend money on a lunch that they don’t want. For example, when we have a chicken patty for lunch, the lunch menu says “chicken patty.” You may think that that is sufficient. It’s not. The menu neglects to state what sort of chicken patty the lunch ladies are serving, whether it’s southwest chicken or the processed fattening chicken. They will also just put “fries” without bothering to mention what kind of fries, sweet potato or normal. This is, frankly, infuriating. I am fed up with paying for good, fattening meals only to be served with healthy alternatives I am forced to buy. To prevent this further, the school needs to start making clearer lunch menus. I believe that the only way to make the lunch menus clearer are to make them according to exactly what kind of food we are having. For instance, if we are having rolls, tell the children what kind of rolls, whether it’s the wheat rolls or the white rolls. Oddly enough, the school lunch menu type person never fails to differentiate between the types of corn we are having. There is normal corn, Mexican corn, chuck wagon corn, all sorts of different corns. This sort of discrepancy is needed for the other foods, also. Kids are constantly paying for meals and going into the lunch period with uncertainty and doubt in their minds, trying to decide whether or not they spent their lunch money wisely. Oftentimes, it works out just fine, with the kid getting what he/she expected. However, several time there has been an alternative to the kind of food normally given, and the child has just flushed $2.25 down the toilet. This madness must stop. I believe that if the children would protest loudly enough against the menu, we could, in a couple of years, win the revolution and have the lunch menu typed more clearly. Or that could just happen now. The majority of the time, it is just one simple word that decides whether or not a student will want the meal. That word could be “southwest” in front of the words “chicken patty.” That one word would, personally, fill me with such a feeling of revolt and disgust that I would pack my lunch immediately and not waste money on a lunch that i don’t want. So you see editor, this is a problem that has gone unnoticed for years. You should be thankful that I brought it to the forefront of your, and the people of Jasper’s, attention. This is a very serious problem, and i am glad you have taken the time to read about it. Jack Goodhue Grade 7, Jasper Middle School

Pizza, clothes, dolls Dear Editor, I think Jasper should have a Chuckie Cheese place so we don’t have to drive all the way to Evansville. We should have a Target too! We need a shop that sells just kid clothing. I think we should have an Amarican Girl doll store so we don’t have to go all the way to Chicago. Maya Knies Grade 2, Precious Blood School

Two things Dear Editor, Two things, 1) Jasper is awesome, it has great schools, it has good food places, and it has stores so people can buy stuff. And 2) I think people should stop litering, it’s bad for the environment. Aiden Seifert Grade 2, Precious Blood School

American Girl store Dear Editor, I think we should have an American girl store in Jasper. Because, so we don’t have to drive somewhere far. I would think it would be awesome. I wouldn’t want to drive to Chicago just to get an American girl doll. That’s why I think we could have an American girl doll store. I also think we could have a pet store in Jasper. So people can buy more pets. I think that would be a very good idea. Well I only want it to be a dog pet store. That why I think we should have a pet store. Anna Uebelhor Grade 2, Precious Blood School

Indoor pool Dear Editor, I think the Jasper pool should be an indoor pool, so we could go swimming during the winter. I think there should be more sports stores because people have to use other people’s stuff. The people could get sick because they are sharing what is not theirs. I think there should be more schools in Jasper so people can learn better. Andrew Noblitt Grade 2, Precious Blood School

Games every night Dear Editor, I think Jasper should have Jasper games every night and that people shoud not litter on the road or beches or sidewalks or wherever you go. There should be more orange leafs in Jasper and more DQs in Jasper Allyson Nord Grade 2, Precious Blood School

More stop signs Dear Editor, I think Jasper needs more stop signs because a lof people run stop signs very often. I also think people should recycle because of all the stuff people throw away it just makes more trash in the world and I also think nobody should lider also cause it just puts even more trash in the Earth and animals can get killed. Alex Bastien Grade 2, Precious Blood School

Stop smoking Dear Editor, We have a nice city, but people need to stop smoking! That is what people need to stop doing. We should have a ice asking rink here. It is very nice in Jasper because we have a very nice river that is called the Patoka River. I like that because there is a sidewalk right next to the river. Luke Shappard Grade 2, Precious Blood School

Too many bucks Dear Editor, They need to lower the price of gas. My mom and dad spend too many bucks on silly stuff that makes your car run. You need money to buy stuff like food, water, and paper. I think they should have it at 0.50. They need to lower the price of gas! Eli Lehmkuhler Grade 2, Precious Blood School

Gluten-free Dear Editor, I wish our town had more gluten-free restaurants because we have a lot of glutenfree people and most of the gluten-free restaurants are cross contaminated. It is not really fair that people without a gluten-free diet get to go out to eat anywhere, and people who have a gluten- free diet don’t have a big option. Even I have a gluten-free diet, and I don’t have a big option. Gluten-free people need a variety of food and also a healthful choice of food. That is why I think we need more gluten-free restaurants. Abby Buschkoetter Grade 3, Precious Blood School

Believe in God Dear Editor, I want people to believe in God. If you do not know about God here are some details about him. Jesus is the only son of God. He died for all of us, and Mary would come to Jesus and pray all day. Jesus had many friends. I go to church every week. I really enjoy going to mass because we get to sing, pray, and we even get to bring up gifts. Erin Mehringer Grade 3, Precious Blood School

Human extinction Dear Editor, My opinion about stopping human extinction is to stop people from making war and they should love and make peace with each other to stop wars and to treat each other like God would treat us. Dane Smith Grade 3, Precious Blood School

Take care of pets Dear Editor, I think people should take care of their pets. Because there are a lot of dogs, cats, and other animals getting run over by trucks, cars, and vans. I love dogs, cats, and other animals and I can no longer see them die because you don’t take care of them. Lillie Roelle Grade 3, Precious Blood School

Bad ideas Dear Editor, I think people should stop bullying and smoking. Bullying and smoking is a bad idea. If you are being bullied, tell a trusted adult right away. If you smoke you could get lung cancer and a really bad disease. I think that we should tell people to stop bullying and smoking. If you are being bullied, stand up, be the person who tells the person to stop bullying. Don’t be the person that bullies. Karis Wigand Grade 3, Precious Blood School

Best breadsticks Dear Editor, I think Noble Romans should have gluten-free pizza because my mom, my brother, and my grandma can’t eat gluten. Noble Romans has the best breadsticks and pizza ever, and I don’t get to go there much! It is my favorite restaurant ever! Noah Schue Grade 3, Precious Blood School

More libraries

Bad idea

Dear Editor, I think Jasper needs more libraries. The more you read, the better you get at reading! Reading is awesome! I also think Jasper needs a mall. We would tear down stores and put them in a big mall. But the stores inside would be exactly how they were. Noah Lukemeyer Grade 2, Precious Blood School

Dear Editor, I think people should stop bullying and smoking. Bullying and smoking is a bad idea. If you are being bullied, tell a trusted adult right away. If you smoke you could get lung cancer and a really bad disease. I think that we should tell people to stop bullying and smoking. If you are being bullied, stand up, be the person who tells

the person to stop bullying. Don’t be the person that bullies. Karis Wigand Grade 3, Precious Blood School

Community garden Dear Editor, I think that Jasper should have a community garden. I think we should have one because then adults and kids could go and help pick the fruits and vegetables. The garden could also help out the people with no food to give the Food Bank a break. Also, if kids just sit around inside and watch T.V., they could come to the garden to get some fresh air and help out. That’s why we should have a community garden. Avery Bartley Grade 4, Precious Blood School

Kids like to work out Dear Editor, I think we should have a gym to exercise for kids because all the places you go work out you have to be 12 or older. Kids like to work out too because it’s fun. You can get in shape or you can just get stronger it shouldn’t just be for 12 and older. That’s what I think we should have in Jasper. Hallie Sargent Grade 4, Precious Blood School

Bowling is my favorite Dear Editor, I am glad to have Easttown Recreation in Jasper because I like to bowl because bowling is my favorite sports. Also, I buy bowling ball at Eastown Recreation. Also, at Eastown Recreation every Saturday I play with my friends. Lastly, at Eastown Recreation I play bowling with my mom and dad and my brother. Brian Dinh Grade 4, Precious Blood School

Fitness program Dear Editor, I think that all schools in Jasper should have an after school fitness program. It would help kids remember to eat healthy and exercise. Also more kids would get in shape and use our walk /run paths more. Jasper would be a lot healthier and would be eating more fruits and vegetables. Caroline Kaiser Grade 4, Precious Blood School

No recycling cans Dear Editor, The many years I have been at the ballpark, I’ve noticed there are no recycling cans. At the ballpark, there are lots of plastic bottles. Those bottles could be recycled and be reused. If people are sitting out in the hot sun, they’re going to need a drink! When they’re done, they would put it in a recycling can, but we don’t have any! I think this would make Jasper a better city. Delaney Wigand Grade 4, Precious Blood School

Let them be free Dear Editor, I have a complaint about something that others don’t understand. The only reason that there are zoos is to make money. I think that animals should be allowed to be free. When animals are in cages they are being tortured by people banging on their cages. Animals are supposed to live their lives not locked up in a cage so they can be on display. What if you were forced out of your home, taken away from your babies just so others could have a job to make money. Would you do it? I wouldn’t. I think animals are the same as human and they have feelings too. Hallie Hubert Grade 4, Precious Blood School

Wasting your life Dear Editor, I think that smoking is bad because every single time you smoke you’re wasting some of your life. So I think that we should get rid of all the tobacco in the USA and plus, you can die from it and you are wasting your money just so you can die. Think now that drugs like that didn’t exist, then people would be a lot better. Aliya LeBlanc Grade 3, Precious Blood School

Frozen dog Dear Editor, I think it should be a law that you can’t treat your pet badly. I heard there was a dog who got frozen to the sidewalk. I think there will be less pain for pets and less heartbreak for pet lovers. Isabelle Lorey Grade 4, Precious Blood School

Somewhere to go Dear Editor, The sidewalk from the High School to the Middle School needs to go somewhere. The walkers walk down and back. Can we make it connect to the riverwalk or to another sidewalk? Please take this letter seriously. Jobe Luebbehusen Grade 5, Precious Blood School

Delectable food Dear Editor, I think Jasper needs to build a Golden Corral. Their food is the most delectable food ever. I love the huge buffet and the triple fountain. However, it is in Evansville and that is a problem. Jared Baugh Grade 5, Precious Blood School

Don’t ignore it Dear Editor, I would like to point out that a decrease of priests and nuns has been a huge problem in the Evansville diocese. If anyone has a little notion to be a priest or nun, don’t ignore it. Kiersten Woehler Grade 5, Precious Blood School

More sidewalks Dear Editor, I think we need more sidewalks for my teacher, Mrs. Schaefer. She is in a wheelchair. We also need ramps to get in some stores. She also has trouble getting into some places she wants to eat. Gabe Barth Grade 5, Precious Blood School

Dogs get bored Dear Editor, I think there should be a dog park in Jasper because many dogs get bored at home when no one is around. If there was a dog park, you could take your dog there to get their energy out and to meet his/her friends. Even if you have a leash for your dog, you could let them go and run because the park would be fenced in. Another reason to have a dog park would be that people could train their dogs there. If we had a park like this, there would have to be rules like picking up your dog’s poop and making sure you are watching your dog at all times. Thank you for considering my idea. Sara Voelkel Grade 5, Precious Blood School

More attractions Dear Editor, I have one thing that I would like to add to Jasper — more attractions for visitors! We don’t have many attractions here for people who are visitng. We could possibly use one of the old, rundown buildings by the Riverwalk and cahnge it into an indoor water park or arcade. Or, we could possibly make one of the old buildings into a science museum. Science museums are my favorite place to go, and I think we should have one here in Jasper. We should have more places like the ones I listed because kids like me want to get out and not stay in their houses all day bored. Also, parents like to have things for their kids to do instead of sitting inside and playing electronics. Thanks you for listening to what I needed to say. Lily Achbach Grade 5, Precious Blood School

More sidewalks? Dear Editor, Has Jasper ever thought of building more sidewalks? The sidewalks we currently have are only by businesses and in a few neighborhoods. My dad tells me to stay off the roads when I ride my bike because they’re cars that go by. But, it’s impossible! Continued on Page 19.

Without a sidewalk, I’m either on the side streets or in a ditch. The benefits of building more sidewalks are: more people will come outside, bike accidents won’t happen as much, traffic would be better, and people would get to ride their bikes more often. I’m sure that everyone in the city would agree. Thank you for listening to my opinion. Jace Hopf Grade 5, Precious Blood School

Speed bumps Dear Editor, People drive really fast in my neighborhood. What would be really great was if there was a way to get them to stop. Adding stops signs would help, but we already have one. They should add speed bumps so that people would slow down or possibly put a speed limit sign in plain sight. Maybe even a part-time crossing guard would help. I think though that it would be more efficient to add speed bumps because you notice them and you have to slow down to cross them. With speed bumps, the amount of deaths and injuries should decrease because pedestrians would be able to be seen better. Thank you for considering my idea. Anna Hollinden Grade 5, Precious Blood School

summer. In spring you can go outside and play. In summer you can go outside and play too. In fall I like to watch the leaves fall while I am outside. I wonder if you like spring, summer, and fall as much as I do. Whitney Recker Grade 1, Holy Family School

Sweet tooth Dear Editor, Do you want to have fun at school? We should have ICE CREAM and CANDY all day! It would not be that healthy and we would probably have to go to the hospital at least 3 times a year. But the candy and ice cream would be very good! I love candy and ice cream! I believe that there will never be ice cream and candy in school! Addison Schnell Grade 1, Holy Family School

Fix the street Dear Editor, I think that the hole in the street should be fixed. That hole is bad because of the traffic. Some people could miss classes. I wonder when it is going to get covered up. Austin Sizemore Grade 1, Holy Family School

Books, books, books

Do not smoke

Dear Editor, In Jasper, I think we should have a Barnes and Noble or another bookstore. The Jasper Library only allows you to rent a used book. The book store would sell all kinds of books that everyone would like. The only store that I know of that sells books in Jasper is Walmart, and they don’t have enough choices of good books for kids. Instead of going to a store, you can order a book online, but it takes about 1-2 weeks to get it in. At a book store, you can purchase it cheaper, right away, and not have to pay shipping. Thank you for listening to my idea to help our community. Tyler Boyd Grade 5, Precious Blood School

Dear Editor, I think people should not smoke. Smoking could get you sick, smoking could cause a fire, and Jesus did not want people to smoke. First, smoking could get you sick. Smoking could give you louning cancer. Second, smoking could cause a fire. If you don’t step on the cigarette when you are done, it will cause a fire. Last, Jesus did not want people to smoke. He wants us to be healthy. That is why I think people should not smoke. Caroline Kieffner Grade 2, Holy Family School

Kids should drive Dear Editor, Do you think kids should drive cars? I think kids should have cars because parents always get to pick the places to go. Kids should have cars because if their parents break their legs who would drive them to the hospital if their grandparents are out of town? I wonder if you will like this. Caden Erny Grade 1, Holy Family School

More ice cream Dear Editor, Do you like ice cream? I like ice cream so much that I think we should have another DQ in town. I think we should have 2 DQs in town because I LOVE ice cream. I think the second DQ should be at Holy Family School. If DQ would be at Holy Family School you could get ice cream anytime you wanted and it would be free. I wonder if DQ will ever be at Holy Family School. CC Hanneman Grade 1, Holy Family School

Let’s swim Dear Editor, Do you like the Jasper Pool? I think we need more water slides. People like to go down them. They are fun. Some people like to go on them. I wonder when the pool is open. Rayna Hicks Grade 1, Holy Family School

Limited schedule Dear Editor, Do you like school? I do not like school. I think we should only go to school on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. We should have 3 hours of recess every day. We have to do too much work! Work is hard! I believe we go to school too much. Wesley Eckman Grade 1, Holy Family School

Fan of all seasons Dear Editor, Do you like spring, summer, and fall? I like spring, summer, and fall so much that I think we just should have fall, spring, and

Too much killing Dear Editor, I think that there are too many killing this year. This makes me sad because I don’t want people to be sad, I don’t want them to get hurt and Jesus made us too live not die. First I don’t want people to be sad. God did not make us to cry all the time. He made us to love. Second, killing is not good. I want people to be safe. I don’t want people to be hurt. Because being safe is important. Lastly, Jesus made us to live and not die. Because Jesus made us to love serve and support one another. That is why I think nobody should ever kill again. I hope you think so too. Our world be a much better place. Jessica Oeding Grade 2, Holy Family School

Free water, light Dear Editor, Water and lighting should be free. I feel this way because it would save people money, water is easy to get, and there are lots of electricity poles. First, it would save people money. So people can be happy. And it would save people money to buy something they need. Second of all, water should be free. It is easy to get. And people don’t want other people to die of thirst. Lastly, lighting should be free. Because there are lots of electricity poles. And there is a lot of electricity. That is why water and lighting should be free. Nick Stratton Grade 2, Holy Family School

Kids do it all Dear Editor: I think kid should be able to do anything they want. They should by able to stay up until 12:00pm, eat popcorn all night long, and play video games. First of all, they should be able to stay up until 12:00pm. They could watch TV all night long. Or they could watch something else. Second of all, they could eat popcorn all night long. They could eat it while eating the popcorn and watching TV. It would also keep them full . Lastly, they could play video games. They keep children active while parents are

busy. They even educate them . That’s why I think kids should be able to do anything they want. All the kids who are reading this probably like this. However, all the adults probably disagree. However, I think it’s a great idea! Joel Wuchner Grade 2, Holy Family School

Take drugs away Dear Editor: People should take away drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes. Without alcohol, people won’t get drunk. Without drugs, kids won’t get mad at their parents. Without cigarettes, there will be less air pollution. First of all, without alcohol, people won’t get drunk. Police won’t have to drive to crashes. Also, people won’t get crazy. Second of all, without drugs, kids won’t get mad at their parents. Kids would do what their parents ask. Parent wouldn’t get mad at their kids for doing something that is wrong. Lastly, without cigarettes, there will be less air pollution. The air will be cleaner. There would also be less chance of global warming. That is why I feel people should take away drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes! It would make the world a much happier and healthier place! Drew Clauss Grade 3, Holy Family School

Trees worth saving Dear Editor: I think that our community should save more trees. Trees are the most important living thing. Without trees, there would be no paper, there would be no oxygen, and there would be no wood. First of all, there would be no paper. This means that there would be no newspapers. This means Mr. Editor, you will lose your job. Second of all, there would be no oxygen. Plants would die. We would die. Animals would die too. Lastly, without trees, there would be no wood. There would be no crosses. Also, people could lose their jobs as carpenters. That is why I feel that our community needs to save more trees! Don’t let us lose the most important living thing that lets us survive. Jake Weinzapfel Grade 3, Holy Family School

Don’t judge by looks Dear Editor: I think people should stop taking other people by their looks, and take them by how they act. They shouldn’t judge people because that is not what others want them to do. They should not judge people by how they act. They need to stop bullying people. First of all, people shouldn’t just people because that is not what other want them to do. They shouldn’t judge people by what color skin they have because they will get hurt back too. It’s just someone with a different color of skin. No one would feel good if people made fun of them because of that. Second of all, people shouldn’t judge people by how they act. If somebody writes sloppy, people should not make fun of them. Instead, they should say good things about them. Lastly, people need to stop bullying people. They need to be kind to one another. They shouldn’t use labels, paper, or anything like that to influence bullying. So, if people see someone being mean to someone else, they need to go up to that person and tell them to stop. That’s why I think people should stop being mean to others. Riley Fischer Grade 3, Holy Family School

Better phones Dear Editor: We need better touch phones. They are dangerous when driving, they cause accidents, and they can cause people to wreck. First of all, I think we need better touch phones because they are dangerous when driving. If someone tries to call while driving, it is dangerous. This is because it is sometimes hard to touch the calling app. Second of all, they cause accidents. If a person is on their phone while walking, they may walk out in front of a car. Or they may not see ice, and they may fall. Lastly, people may wreck. They may

hurt themselves. Or they could hurt others. That is why we need better touch phones. It would help people stay safe! Xavior Wehr Grade 3, Holy Family School

Don’t be rude Dear Editor: People should not be rude. They should be people of faith. I feel this way because people get bullied too much, if people are nicer, they would have more friends, and if they become persons of faith, they will go to Jesus. First of all, people get bullied too much and people, who are bullies, don’t have friends. For kids, it’s usually just words that cause bullying. For teens, it could be getting punched and stuff like that. Second of all, if people are nicer, they will have more friends. If they are being mean to their friends, there’s a chance they will lose their friends. Lastly, if they become persons of faith, they’ll go to Jesus. They will be in a good place. And they’ll be a friend of Jesus. That’s why people should not be rude. They should be people of faith. Selena Penick Grade 3, Holy Family School

Smaller classes Dear Editor, I think it is better to have smaller classes. My first reason is your teachers can do more fun things with you because it is a lot easier to take 14 kids to a field trip verses 28 kids. I would rather take a tiny class of kids than a huge group than a large amount we would not be able to have any fun. My second reason is you would have more one on one time with your teacher. I like that better than having a lot of kids because she will only have 14 kids to help not28 kids to help. My last reason is if you want to have a class party you only have to invite a small group of friends so it would be a lot cheaper than a bunch of kids. When I was little, I also had a small amount of kids so I could have so I could have class parties. Those are my reasons that a lot is good to be in smaller classes not big classes. Celeste Eby Grade 4, Holy Family School

Riverwalk trail Dear editor, It’s time for a change. I think we should have a riding trail at the River Walk. It would be so cool, and every one would love it. A riding trail would be a big success. I think a lot of people would enjoy it. I know a lot of people who love horses. A lot of people also love the River Walk. I love horses and think it would be nice. Being able to ride and see the River Walk. It would have to have a lot of stuff. But I know it would be super cool. I also think you would probably need a dirt road water through and meadow. I love horses and the River Walk imagine how it would be together. And that’s why I think we should have a horse trail in the River Walk. Josie Lehmkuhler Grade 4, Holy Family School

Goods too costly Dear Editor, I think milk should be $0.99 instead of $3.99,and gas should be $0.50 instead of $3.37 because milk and gas have been expensive it would be nice to lower the prices. We could buy more furniture. Also save to have money to pay bills. We could buy more milk and gas if we lower the prices. If we protest we could save money. We can have milk for $0.99 and gas for $0.50! We could have extra money after you pay the house bill if we save money on gas and milk. Think about it. We could save money after house bills. That would be cool. We could buy more clothes, and buy more toys for birthdays, and Christmas. It would be nice to save money. So we can buy stuff like vacations. It would be good to have money to feed your kids. You could have money to go shopping. I think milk should be $0.99 instead of $3.99, and gas should be $0.50 instead of $3.37. Splashing unwanted Dear Editor, SPLASH! SPLASH! SPLASH! WIPE! WIPE! WIPE! That’s the sound of water getting splashed onto a car by a semi. I think that semis should have their own highway road because water is getting splashed by a semi. Sometimes mud gets on the windshield and then it is hard to see out. Once my mom and I were driving to Evansville and it just rained and a semi drove past and splashed mud on her car and made it hard to see. And it gets frustrating when you just clean your car and then it’s dirty. Some water is muddy and people don’t like to get mud on their car and have to spend money at a car wash. And cars are little and semis are huge and take up the whole road .if they can’t build the new roads then they should have better mud flaps so the water and mud don’t splash up at cars. I also think that cars and pickup trucks should have mud flaps too. If semis have their own highway to drive on, cars wouldn’t have to reduce their speed going up hills. And semis are tall and are hard to see around. I think that when it rains and a semi is dirty it needs to be clean, so it doesn’t drop mud on the roads. I think it will keep the roads and cars clean. And so a lot of people don’t like their cars dirty ,so I think semis should have their own road. Grace Main Grade 4, Holy Family School

Take the field Dear Editor, I excitedly threw on my jersey, put up my hair, and dashed out the door to my car! Why am I so anxious to go? It is because I am going to have my first soccer game of the season! Playing sports can have a lot of major impacts on your life, such as the enjoyment of the game, making delightful friends, and getting as healthy as a doctor! Sports are an amazing experience, and you should definitely play them. Clearly, everyone should play sports because of the enjoyment of sports. The first reason you should play sports for the enjoyment of the game is to have a fabulous time. I’ve played sports since I was born, so I definitely know what I am talking about. The second reason is if you enjoy running around and hitting balls, you will just cherish sports. All sports involve darting around, so if you are a runner, you would totally enjoy sports. Do you like to win? If so, you will adore sports. Winning is the goal of sports. You will win multiple games while having fun. That is the first reason you should play sports. Without a doubt, while you are playing sports, you will make fantastic friends. The reason for playing sports to make friends is simple. The first reason is to get to know your old friends better. There are different schools in Jasper, and many of my friends go to a different school. By playing sports I can see my other friends more often. The second reason you should play sports to make friends are to make new ones. You might find your future best friend by playing sports. The third reason is to reunite with your old friends. As well making new friends, you should still be friends with your old friends. That is the second reason you should play sports. Everyone knows that sports can benefit you in your health. The first way sports can improve your health is by not playing video games. Video games can damage your eyes, and violent video games will start to give you violent thoughts. The second reason you should play sports is to become more active. Being active will make you stronger, and by getting stronger, you will become healthier. The last reason you should play sports to improve your health is because of the sun. The sun has many healthy benefits that can improve your skin. That is the third reason you should play sports. In conclusion, everyone should play sports for the enjoyment of the game, to make fabulous friends, and to have a healthy lifestyle. So while you are sprinting around the field, kicking balls, and winning a multitude of games, think of all the benefits you will get from playing these spectacular sports. Teen center needed Dear Editor, Almost every kid in the world wants to have fun and hangout with their friends

and play games. Well, you can do that at Teen Outback, so why don’t we build one in Jasper. It would be an astounding idea. We need a Teen Outback in Jasper because your parents can get there quicker than driving to Huntingburg. It is enjoyable, and there aren’t any other places for kids to come together and hangout. We need a Teen Outback in Jasper because your parents can get there faster than going to Huntingburg. My parents would like to have one here than driving down all the way down there and using up their gas that they use to get to work. Also, there aren’t any other places for kids to come together and hang out. What I mean by that is that there aren’t places where kids can play games and dance in the same building. It is enjoyable. Teen Outback is fun because they have games, dodge ball, arcade games, and a dance room. So a parent can get there quicker than driving to Huntingburg. In conclusion, I think we should have a Teen Outback in Jasper because it would be an astounding idea. Matthew Lamey Grade 5, Holy Family School

Healthy diet Dear Editor, Mush! Munch! Yum! Those are the grand sounds of healthy food! Are you on the go and need a great fast food place? Most parents want healthy food for their kids. That is one reason a person has to make a healthy fast food place in Jasper. It would have to be kid friendly and nice service. It would be close in the middle of Jasper. Finally, it would have so many people come eat there. That’s why we need a healthy fast food place. When you are on the go you can stop and pick mouth-watering food up. When you come back from a big game you can pick up a juicy steak or cheese pizza. You know how tired you can get? It would be easy to get to. It would by close to the middle of Jasper. You would have a fantastic time at the restaurant. You could play with your kids. There would be a full-size screen you could watch a movie on and there would be games to play. It would have a kid’s room. Parents would have a magnificent time ordering food. In conclusion a new restaurant would be wonderful! It would help you on the go and you would have grand old time going there. I hope you are the one to open it. So be remarkable and you would probably be a millionaire! Bing! Ching! Ditch the iPod Dear Editor, GET OFF YOUR IPOD RIGHT NOW!! I think kids need to get off their IPods, and phones. Do you always hear the sounds of electronics when it’s a nice sunny day? Kids should get off their iPods when it is sunny. This is why. They get addicted to them; kids listen to music too loud, older siblings teach little kids to play them. To begin with, kids get addicted to electronics. Teenagers sit on the couch and never get off. They get too lazy when kids sit on the couch and don’t do a thing. Children don’t do any chores, and if they do get up they still are playing them. On the other hand, boys and girls listen to music to loud. When kids sit on the couch they listen to music and play games too loud. It hurts their ears. After awhile they can’t hear very well. Then they go deaf. Kids can’t hear at all. In the end, older siblings are teaching their little siblings how to work them. So they know how to work them. Little kids play on other peoples IPods. Then little kids don’t go outside. Little kids get their own IPods. Then they get addicted to them. In conclusion, kids need to get off their IPods, IPods’ and phones. Here is why they get addicted to them, they listen to music to loud, and older kids show little kids how to play them. GO OUTSIDE RIGHT NOW! Camille Aders Grade 5, Holy Family School

Smoking not worth it Dear editor, Did you know that smoking can increase your chances of getting cancer? I think people should not smoke because it is bad for their health.

I don’t think people should smoke because it smells bad and it can make you have bad breath. It can do a lot of bad things to your skin and it can cause a lot of other diseases. It is bad for your lungs and your health and it makes you look older. It even can change your voice! I don’t think that all of that is worth it. That’s why I think people should not smoke. Now think about it, is it really worth having all of this stuff happen to your body? David Uebelhor Grade 6, Holy Family School

High-tech schools Dear Editor, I think that technology is important in schools because it helps us to find the information we need. We need to get new laptops because a lot of them in schools don’t work right. Schools need the best technology because it can help them find the information that we need. Technology can help us learn things faster, better, and easier. Jacob Barth Grade 6, Holy Family School

Spread good news Dear Editor, Do young children get to talk about God? Some do, but not all. We need more kids to go to Catholic Schools. If we start teaching young children about God then they might preach as an adult and maybe even become a nun, a priest, or a deacon. We need to spread the good news! When young children go to church young, they will learn as they grow. Parents may not have enough money to send their children to a Catholic school. The good thing is that state and local funding is there to help. We need to work on making the cost to go to a Catholic school less expensive by getting the word out about these programs. We need to spread the good news. Give children a chance! Maria Mehringer Grade 6, Holy Family School

Bring on a labyrinth Dear Editor, Do you think we need more tourism in Jasper? I think we could build a new attraction so more tourists would come to Jasper. Jasper should build a Labyrinth! I think Jasper should build a Labyrinth to bring in tourism. A Labyrinth is kind of like a corn maze, only made out of bushes or rocks. Jasper is a nice little town with lots of things to do and I think a Labyrinth could add one more activity that tourists could do. We have a great river Walk and a Labyrinth with some picnic grounds nearby would be a perfect family day out. People could even put fun activities in the Labyrinth! So to sum it all up, I think a Labyrinth could be a great thing to add to Jasper. It could be a family hotspot for a fun picnic. A Labyrinth could also be a great workout for adults! Kennedy Nicholson Grade 6, Holy Family School

Bigger, better library Dear editor, Why don’t we build a new and bigger library for our community??? The library we have now is in the historic district, but its small and some parts of it are falling apart. I believe if we build a new one we can have tons of more room to make the new one bigger and nicer and we could fit a ton more books and have a lot more. Some people disagree, but think of it a new bigger one would be an enjoyment to all. Just think of it a new and bigger library would bring more people to it and open up some new jobs. We would have to find a big open area for it, which we have a few options in jasper to choose from. Tyler McCormick Grade 7, Holy Family School

Don’t pick abortion Dear Editor, Did you know that abortion kills 108,000 babies every month in the United States? Also, abortion care cost more than some peoples’ monthly rent. I am Pro Life. I believe these innocent babies should have chance to live because maybe someday one of these babies will grow up and make a

cure for cancer. There are always other options, like adoption. There are a lot of married couples that can’t have children that would be willing to adopt babies. I wrote this to inform you how bad abortion is and that there are always other options. Caitlin Knies Grade 7, Holy Family School

Golf is good Dear Editor, The game of golf is good for anyone. You can play it no matter how old you are! You don’t have to be a Pro player to play golf. If you enjoy it, it’s great for you! Due to much love for many people here in Jasper, and around Dubois County, we should get an indoor golf range. There is one in French Lick, which is a great facility, but what would you do with the days in the winter? When the roads are bad, or it’s bad driving conditions, it would be much easier to go here in Jasper. We wouldn’t even have to have a PGA certified coach! This would just a place where you can hit. Than if you really need a lesson, you can just go to French Lick! This would provide more work for anyone who needs a job. This would also allow more people to play, and enjoy golf ! Jack Bies Grade 7, Holy Family School

Lend a hand Dear Editor, Don’t you agree everyone needs help every once in a while? Lots of people are poor, and out of work. I think more people need to consider donating to local charities. Donating to St Vincent De Paul and the Community food bank helps so many people. When you donate to St Vincent De Paul, volunteers sort the items and price them to put in the store where they are then sold to people that need them more. The Community Food Bank helps lots of people by having three community meals a week. At each meal volunteers serve food and drink to people less fortunate. I myself have helped at the community meals before. It is sad to see how many people are in need and that don’t have money for food. And it is amazing how you feel when you leave, the feeling you have. The feeling you get when you help others. Of all the things you just read there are some things you need to remember and one question to ask yourself. A little bit goes a long way. People need help. They need someone to help them. The question to ask yourself is why can’t that someone to help them be you? Whether wanting to donate volunteer or just ask a few questions call St Vincent De Paul at 482-3601 and/or the community Food Bank at 482-9009.Helping is an option, whether they need help isn’t. Maryellen Fallon Grade 7, Holy Family School

Beware of heart disease Dear Editor, Did you know that 39,000 women each year die from breast cancer each year? Breast cancer is commonly spoken of. But, did you know there is a disease, not commonly spoken of, that even more women die from each year? That disease is heart disease, and 8.9 million women die from it each year. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for all Americans; men and woman. Half of all deaths each year are from heart disease. Women think their biggest health threat is breast cancer, but actually, the biggest health threat is heart disease. Yes, breast cancer is a threat for all women, but heart disease is an even larger threat. Women, men, and even doctors don’t see the threat of this disease. One of the warning signs of heart disease is a heart attack. I think we need to get the word out about heart disease. Heart disease takes the lives of more people than lung cancer and breast cancer combined. That’s a large percentage of people. So, I think heart disease needs help and support to get the word out. We need to get help today, and save lives! We could easily save a life today, by making the effect of heart disease aware to everyone around us. Every 33 seconds, someone dies from heart disease. Teach with iPads Dear Editor, I think all schools should start teaching on ipads. Because when we write on paper all day our hands start to hurt and sweat and it feels like our hands want a break! I think ipads are fun. If we use ipaps I thaink kids would really appreciate it. So if all kids get to use ipads they would be really happy! Tahya Neukam Grade 2, Holland Elementary

So, you get wet and muddy. That is why I think people should get out more. Myles Kerkhoff Grade 2, Holland Elementary

Protect tigers Dear Editor, I think that tigers should have more protection than they do now. I think that people should put up fences, security cameras, (to keep away poachers) and they should have people who protect the tigers from poachers at night. They should leave a big space inside the fence though. There should be people watching the security cameras video all night. If

tigers go extinct I would be devastated. Tigers have always been my favorite big cat. So I hope that tigers will be able to get back up to the numbers they used to have. Garrison Sickbert Grade 3, Holland Elementary

VBS is cool Dear Editor, We do V.B.S. in my church. V.B.S is a lot of cool stuff. There is a lot of games and food there. There is a pool at my church. We have an egg toss. At my church we also have a ring toss. V.B.S. is so fun. At V.B.S. when you win a prize. Even at lunch time all the kids get to eat outside to eat. There is a face painting table. Sometimes you get to play on the playground. That is why you should come to my church. Mollie Birchler Grade 3, Holland Elementary

Indiana Pacers Dear Editor, My favorite NBA basketball team is the Indiana Pacers. Their colors are yellow, blue, and white. They are one of the best teams in the NBA right now. They have some very good plays like Roy Hibbert, Paul George, and Lance Stephen. The season is about half over. Luke Meyer Grade 3, Holland Elementary

Electronic devices Dear Editor, Electronic devices are getting in the way. Everyone is getting home from school/work and that turns into their top priority. But, they still have works that needs to be done. Then once they get to school/work their teacher/boss asks for their work. But, they don’t have it. So, they get in trouble for doing something that could have been done even if they have been playing on electronics. They could have done their work and then you can play on your electronic. But, people think they won’t have time to goof off. So then, their brain gets ruined each time. Calista Martin Grade 3, Holland Elementary

Cheerleaders Dear Editor, I think cheer leaders should cheer at more girl games. They cheer at some but not so many. I think it would be fairer and a better game when there is someone cheering you on. Some of the other school have cheer leaders that come to the games and some basketball players might feel a little bit sad that no one is cheering them on. Jenna Kendall Grade 3, Holland Elementary

March of Dimes Dear Editor, Have you heard of March of Dimes? You should donate money to them. If they raise enough money then you can save a child’s life. We should have lemonade stand, bake sales, yard sales to raise money. They we can make a difference in a child’s life. Payton Neier Grade 3, Holland Elementary

Circus needed Dear Editor, I wish there was a circus in Holland so we could go there! It would be fun to have a circus in Holland. People could go their whenever they wanted. Everyone in Holland would be happy. The circus would love Holland! Courtney Blackgrove Grade 3, Holland Elementary

Don’t ban guns Dear Editor, I don’t thing people need to ban guns, if people would not be dumb with guns. They should be resposible with guns because of gun murders. Also they cross the border with illegal guns. So if people were resposible with guns this wouldn’t be happening. Gun shops would make a contract to not hold it if their drunk. Matthew Altmeyer Grade 4, Holland Elementary

Sending hope Dear Editor, My dad works with a girl who’s niece has cancer. She is about my age witch is nine years old. I’m not that sure but, I think she has a brain tumor. Before she went into kindergarten, she got her eyes checked, and that’s when they found out she had cancer. My dad said she had never been to school. I hope she has someone at the hospital to teach her. I hope she gets better. Haley Briggs Grade 4, Holland Elementary

Religion Dear Editor, Okay, I know you would not say if you were religious or not but just think about it. I have really stated believing in Christ a good year ago because I got baptized. Here is my story. So when I got baptized I just knew what I needed. My whole life revolved around little things like tests, book, or friends. Then I kind not knew what I had to do to this world but piece by piece. One word at a time. I went to church did a little research and presto, I knew what I should do. I stated a bible study ASAP. I was getting nowhere then finally out of the blue three people joined. Next week I had six people joined. Finally almost everybody joined in my grade. People actually started signing up. It went well. Luke Trout Grade 4, Holland Elementary

4-wheelers are fun

Governor? I think so. If you don’t, well then I can’t do anything about that. But that is my opinion. Drew Meece Grade 4, Holland Elementary

Yoga is fun Dear Editor, I think that everybody should try yoga it is a fun way to get a good workout. Also, if you concentrate on your breathing then you will be relaxed and focused. Leah O’Brien Grade 5, Holland Elementary

Low quality toys Dear Editor, I think that companies should take more pride in the products they make. Most things we buy anymore are poorly made and don’t last. Getting a toy, for example, and it breaking the same day is disappointing. Most toys have a high price but low quality. I hope this problem will be fixed. Monica Steckler Grade 5, Holland Elementary

School exercise Dear Editor, I think that school should have more exercise activities. Lots of schools are eating healthy, so we should exercise to stay healthy. Staying healthy is very good for you, and you should exercise daily. Abigail Kerkoff Grade 5, Holland Elementary

Dear Editor, Can you ride a four-wheeler? Well I can. Let me tell you something it is fun. I have been all around the United States. I’ve been to a lot of places around the United States riding my four-wheeler in nationals. I’ve been to Tennessee twice, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia. I’ve been to some other places too, but those are my favorite places. Carson Niehaus Grade 4, Holland Elementary

Injury prevention

Stop cussing

Help your hands

Dear Editor, I think that people need to stop cussing. I want people to stop cussing because if parents cuss they can get the cuss words stuck in their children’s head and they will start saying them at the age of five or six. You can call people cuss words and that hurts their feelings a lot. So we need to stop cussing and calling them names and let the world be nice and respectful. Rayce Petry Grade 4, Holland Elementary

School dog Dear Editor, I think every school should have a school dog. Every school should have a German Shepard for a guard dog. If every school had a dog then we would know if a robber was coming into the school because it would know that there is someone attacking in the school. If you heard the dog barking then the principal would most likely call the police. Everybody would go to the escape plan when they hear the principal over the speaker. The teachers would guard the kids out the door. That is why everyone should have a school dog! Mikah Goeppner Grade 4, Holland Elementary

Great cook Dear Editor, My mom cooks for me every day. She cooks steak on Monday. She cooks really good. She is awesome at cooking. Skyler Gifford Grade 4, Holland Elementary

Church, state Dear Editor, I do not agree with the Seperation of church in State Law. People including teachers should be allowed to speak there minds. You don’t believe me? Fine, don’t then. But I’m telling you, if you look at the first ammendment Freedom of Speech, then you will see my reasoning. Think about this, the first president along with the rest of the government decread this. Doesn’t the president, House, and Senate outrank the

Dear Editor, Do you know how to prevent getting badly injured? Well, in the car you should wear a seatbelt. A few months ago my sister wrecked her car, and wesn’t wearing a seatbelt. She was very lucky. Event since then, I’ve been wanting to convince people to wear one, so wear one! Hannah Barnett Grade 5, Holland Elementary

Dear Editor, Did you know that antibacterial soap kills good and bad bacteria? Als, that hand sanitizer makes your hands drier? If you use regular soap and water, you won’t need that moisturizing cream or get as sick. Now that’s a solution. Jackson McPherron Grade 5, Holland Elementary

More summer Dear Editor, I think there should be more summer so that kids can play outside more. Then it will be easier for people to stay in better shape. Kids can also move around more because at school you’re sitting down for most of the day. Sam Sermersheim Grade 5, Holland Elementary

Explosions Dear Editor, I like things that explode. I like the loud noise, fire, smoke, and the small craters in my yard. Last year my dad and I shot bottle rockets into our pond. Explosives are fun if they are controlled. Levi Schaeffer Grade 5, Holland Elementary

Use manners Dear Editor, I think that people need to use their manners more. I will not name people, but some people are very rude. For an example, about two years ago I was getting some bread at the store for the baseball concessions in Huntingburg. My mom and I were walking out of the store and my mom slipped and dropped most of the bred. In about 3 seconds, there were about five people helping us pick up the bread. That was very nice of them. Some people are nice all the time but, that does not mean you should stop now. Elijah Horton Grade 5, Holland Elementary

Being bad

My dad

Dear Editor, I wish that people would stop being bad because they will do bad things to people and they will do bad things to animals and to the earth. What do you think? Elizabeth Cruz Grade 1, Huntingburg Elementary

Grandpa Dear Editor, My Grandpa Hemmer is my hero because he helped people in the Army. He died from a heart attack before I was born. I know he’s still in my heart because I Love him. And because he is my Grandpa. Kiera Hewitt Grade 2, Huntingburg Elementary

Pets in school Dear Editor, I wish we could bring pet to school. It would be so fun to bring pets to school! We could tell facts about them, and we could tell how lovely for handsome they look. They could do tricks, how they eat, we could take turns playing with them, and feeding them. Ashlie Harter Grade 2, Huntingburg Elementary

Amazing books Dear Editor, I think books are amazing because if we didn’t have them we couldn’t learn. Do you think more people should read books? You should read them because then you’ll have knowledge! Everybody should have knowledge. That’s why I think books are amazing. Kelsey Wibbeler Grade 2, Huntingburg Elementary

Be quiet in car Dear Editor, I think kids should be more careful when they are in the car. Distracting the driver is very dangerous. It could make the driver crash. Kids should be quiet in the car by either reading or playing a game with the volume turned all the way down. Carter Anderson Grade 2, Huntingburg Elementary

Jesus

Dear Editor, I think Jesus should be honored because he saved our lives. Every thing and everybody would not be here without him. So I think he should be honored by everyone! Braelyn Houchin Grade 2, Huntingburg Elementary

New Olympic game Dear Editor, In the Olympics there sould be a new game called gymnastics on ice! They will have to wear gloves in case they do hand stands. They will have to also have to wear protect gear because they could get hurt. Carson Bromm Grade 2, Huntingburg Elementary

Cancer Dear Editor, Have you ever had anyone in your family who had childhood cancer? And then later as an adult get cancer again? I have. My father died from cancer on April 7th 2008 when I was only 3 yrs old. He developed Hodgkin’s Lymphoma when he was 7. The Herald ran a story about him in 1986 when he was 13. At that time he was cancer free. 27 years later my father developed another form of cancer as an adult called Leiomyo Sarcoma. Once again the Herald ran a story about him in 2007. He was only 35 years old when he died. I am now 9 years old and have several questions about my father’s illnesses. I am grateful for the Herald to help be find out more about him because of the stories they printed so long ago. I was able to learn how hard it was for my father as a child to battle cancer and all of the struggles he faced. I also learned from the story how hard it was for my mother and the rest of my family to deal with the pain of his cancer. If this has happened to you or someone in your family were you sad too? I also read how the community came together to help my family by raising money to help with his medical bills. That is something that your community can help you do if you need it too. We live in a kind small town that cares for others and is willing to help others even if they are strangers to them. That makes me very proud and happy. Wouldn’t you be happy too? Caitlyn Frick Grade 3, Huntingburg Elementary

Add an hour Dear Editor, I think we should add an hour to each day because we had so many snow days this yar. I am a kind of person who wants to have a lot of summer. We would have to make up 6 days of school. Kids need a lot of summer because kids need to waste their energy, so the parents don’t go nuts. Can you please add 1 hour to each school day? Kids won’t be thinking about school. They will just be thinking about summer. Personally, I am looking forward to camping, swimming, fishing, and playing some baseball. Summer vacation is what I live for. I can amagine 1 day shorter. Crew Gerber Grade 3, Huntingburg Elementary

Pet abuse Dear Editor, I think pet abuse is bad. Those poor animals feel mistreated. They’re not bad pets. All they want is a home. Pets think they did something right, but then pets feel they did something wrong when they are mistreated. It’s bad to leave a dog or cat in a cage in the middle of a town with just a little bit of food and water. I think that if you leave a dog or cat in the middle of the town you should be punished. What if you were your pet and you got left in the middle of the town? That would be sad for you. Don’t get a pet if you’re going to mistreat it. Only get a pet if you are willing to take care of it. Natilee Wahl Grade 3, Huntingburg Elementary

Bombers baseball Dear Editor, The Dubois County Bomber are a baseball team in Huntingburg. My dad owns the stadium. The college coaches send some of their player to come and play with the Bombers. Do you like baseball? If you do you should come to the games. We have a mascot named Casey. There’s a gift shop. At the end of the ga,e, you can go on the field. Do you know the move League of Their Own? The stadium that the Bombers play in is where the movie was filmed. The team that played there in the move was called the Peaches. We have Peaches too. The bombers

have a Facebook page. See you at the game! Mike Uebelhor Grade 3, Huntingburg Elementary

Exercise Dear Editor, Who doesn’t want to exercise? Well if you don’t you should. It’s healthy for your body. It makes your heart, lungs, and muscles strong. You can do sports like football, golf, soccer, baseball or tennis. If you want to go to the gym you can. You can walk around your block. It also gives you something to do. You won’t be bored anymore. You can take your dog on walks with you. Dogs need lots of exercise too. They will be healthy like you will. Dogs need 2 or 3 walks a day. Andrea Stetter Grade 3, Huntingburg Elementary

Teen Outback Dear Editor, I like going to the Teen Outback because it has “Just Dance.” It is a fun game to play for the kids who go to Teen Outback. We have iPads to play on and there are computers to get on with educational games for kids so they can learn more to be smart. It is fun to play on the Xbox because you get to play all kinds of games. It is just so fun to play at the Teen Outback! People should go; we can learn more and be smart. I like going to the Teen Outback. Gabrielle McDowell Grade 3, Huntingburg Elementary

Veterans Dear Editor, I think Veterans should get the day off of work when it is Veterans’ Day. They have put their lives on the line for us, so we should help them. I asked my mom, dad, teachers, grandma and grandpa. They all agreed that Veterans should get the day off. Lilly McMickle Grade 3, Huntingburg Elementary

Bad weather Dear Editor, I think driving in bad weather isn’t good. If it is icy you might slip and slide. Imagine if there were kids in your car and you slipped on the ice. You and the kids could get hurt or even die. If school gets cancelled you shouldn’t be driving. Instead you should play outside in the snow. Don’t drive in back wether. It is not good for you or anyone else! Ana Hewitt Grade 4, Huntingburg Elementary

Video games Dear Editor, People should not play so many video games. People need to learn more at school so they can get good grades and go to college and get a good job. Alfredo Angeles Grade 4, Huntingburg Elementary

Train tracks Dear Editor, I think that there should be an over pass or under pass for the train trackes. It is a problem for people in the morning and afternoon, because they are becomeing late for appointments and work. An over pass or under pass would be great for everone mostly bus and semi drivers so they won’t have to stop traffic. It would save power, time, and hassle. Devin Carter Grade 4, Huntingburg Elementary

cohol and inhale other products that have alcohol in them? I think all products with alcohol should be behind counters. There have been many wrecks with teens who get hurt or die. Most of the people who are getting into wrecks are mostly teenagers. They are getting into these wrecks because of alcohol. When teens are intoxicated, they show off with their car and get into wrecks. Teens shouldn’t be able to purchase anything with alcohol products in them. Many teens who inhale and drink alcohol get into wrecks. I have the right to live; please don’t endanger my life and others on the streets! Jaylon Leon Grade 5, Huntingburg Elementary

More restaurants Dear Editor, I think that we should have more restaurants in Huntingburg. Memorial Gym has lots of events held there, so visitors need to have more restaurants to chose from. Restaurants are so crowded when these events are held, so we need a larger variety of food. There are lots of activities at the park that attract visitors, and they need some place to go where you don’t have to stand in line for a long time. My family doesn’t like to drive to Jasper to get something to eat. Huntingburg has lots of places where restaurants can be built, so let’s get building! It would be nice if we could have more restaurants in Huntingburg. Makenna Peter Grade 5, Huntingburg Elementary

Chores Dear Editor, Does you child do chores? I think every child should have chores. Chores are where you clean the dishes or take out the trash. Responsibility...chores give your child great responsibility. When your child comes home from school, you rely on your child to get their chores done. Chores also give kids a little exercise! For example if you’re doing dishes by hand, it gives your arms a little exercise. This is why I think every child should have chores. It is important because chores give your responsibility, keeps children busy, and gives a little exercise for you. Cameron Giles Grade 5, Huntingburg Elementary

Surveillance Dear Editor, I believe that the town of Huntingburg should require a law that says that every block should have a surveillance camera on a telephone pole. Crimes is happening all the time; it is crazy these days. The cameras will survey the streets searching for crime. The cameras will locate many things. They will locate drug dealers passing on drugs to people. They will locate the dealer so the cops can do their thing. They will survey the streets for crime going on, and they will see if people steal other people’s belongings. Finally, they will locate if street fights are happening. We don’t need anybody harming each other. Now I hope you have realized why this town needs cameras on light post. I hope that the citizens of Huntingburg will agree. Let’s stop crime! It is urgent that we stop this now. Ethan Bell Grade 5, Huntingburg Elementary

Don’t you want to experience new, colorful cultures? The opportunity is within your reach; all you have to do is be willing to try. Everyone should be enthusiastic about learning a new language. If you have the patience and the guidance, learning a new language can be fun and easy! You can use designated programs, helpful books, the vast internet, and many more sources to help you become fluent in the language. Just think of the possibilities! You have the potential to speak many languages smoothly: French, Spanish, German, Chinese, and plenty more. Learning a new, unique language could change your

life, if not your view on others. Once you accomplish the task of mastering a new language, unexpected doors of opportunity will open up. If you ever visit the beautiful country native to the tongue you are learning, you would be able to experience more and make a once-in-a-lifetime memories without the inconvenience of a language barrier. When you are learning a language completely different from your own, there are new rules to become accustom to. Don’t get discourage; always persevere thought the hardships. Learning a new language takes patience and persistence, but it’s an excellent skill everyone should try to achieve. Evie Sherer Grade 6, Southridge Middle School

Student council Dear Editor, I am a member of Southridge Middle School Student Council. Student council plays an important role in our school’s pride and activities. Our student council is run by Mrs. Gerber, a 7th grade teacher. We not only help our school, but we also help out with the community. Each morning we meet during homeroom to discuss problems that need to be addressed or positive activities that need to continue. We also collect money to give to certain foundations in need. The student council helps with many extra school activities. Every other month we set up for school dances. Most students enjoy them and are greatly entertained. With the help of students and staff members, we provide dances that are well decorated and filled with superb music and lights. To add excitement to the school day we are constantly having contests and activities for all the students. We give them prizes like hot cocoa, free breakfast, parties, etc. We’ve done door decorating contests, best recycling boxes and many more exciting events. Student council tries to help out the community whenever possible. To keep our school environmentally friendly, we recycle paper and plastic bottles. In each classroom there is a recycling box designed by students to remind them to recycle. We have successfully collected numerous amounts of plastic bottles and paper. The student council also helps collect money to give to Riley Hospital. The whol school loves to help out with this. We have dress up days, each costing a dollar and jar wars, a money collection race, to gain money to contribute to the hospital. When collecting the money, we give every single cent to Riley Hospital. Southridge Middle School Student Council is definitely important to our school. With the help of all our peers, we’ve helped make our school and community transcend to a new level. Audra Hochgesang Grade 6, Southridge Middle School

Pigs at the fair Dear Editor, I am in 4-H at Dubois County. I show pigs, goats and chickens. This year at the fair, the pigs don’t get to come until 2 days before the pig show. I don’t agree with this. I enjoy having the pigs there all week. I get to spray them off with our water sprayers, give them baths, and I enjoy having them there. The pig barn is where I usually hang out with my 4-H friends. It is often very hot at the fair. Sometimes my friends and I have water fights in the pig barn. It doesn’t matter if we get the pigs wet because if we miss the target, the person we are aiming at, the pigs get wet and that makes them happy. Giving the pigs baths is wonderful. We get all sudsy and we when we give them baths. This cools off the pigs and we get cooled off too. Many people bring animals besides pigs. This makes it hard to go back and forth during the day to take care of your pigs and animals at the fair, especially if you are camping at the 4-H fairgrounds. This is why I believe pigs should be at the fair all week. Grace Sickbert Grade 6, Southridge Middle School

Snacks in school Dear Editor, If you had to do without snacks and soda at school, how you would feel? I would feel like the law of all of the 50 states is trying to take away our teens and adult’s freedom to eat and drink whatever we would like. When I want to have a soda or a bag of chips, I have the right to eat a bag of chips

or drink a soda. It is each citizen’s right to live his/her life and make choices. Blake Lindauer Grade 7, Southridge Middle School

Sidewalks Dear Editor, I believe there should be a sidewalk on the side of every street. Sidewalks help save lives if people stay on them and use them safely. Cars are less likely to hit someone on the sidewalks, than someone in the street. Sidewalks can be dangerous if people try to do stupid tricks off the side of them, but for the most part, sidewalks are a good thing. Caden Harmon Grade 7, Southridge Middle School

Gun Control Dear Editor, Gun control has been a problem in the U.S. for decades. There are those whom choose to support guns, and of course, there are those whom choose to go against guns. I happen to go against guns, but I am also for guns to a limit. For those who chose to go for guns, there are reasons you should be considerate towards the other party’s opinion on putting more restrictions on guns. There have been many shootings in just the last year, and there are many accidents occurring all over the world. At the same time, there are also upsides to guns. Well, not upsides, but they are not entirely bad. There is just target shooting, which is fun in my opinion. There is also self-defense and hunting for food. Then again, there is hunting for sport, which doesn’t make sense to me. Killing for fun, that’s just wrong! The problems with gun control can be solved by having people show their gun license up front. That is my knowledge and opinions. Caleb Lechner Grade 7, Southridge Middle School

Gay marriage Dear Editor, I am against gay marriage, but I am even more against hating people because they are gay. That’s like hating someone because their hair is brown. Gay people are just like straight people, they deserve the same respect as you. They are no different. Pope Francis says, “If a person is gay and seeks the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?” Who are you to judge? By judging and hating, you are probably missing out on some awesome friendships. I have people within my family who are gay, and they are honestly some of the best people I know. Hating people because they are gay is ignorant, hypocritical, and sad. “So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, ‘He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone.’” John 8:7 I am a very devout Catholic, and I love gay people. Hey, guess what? That doesn’t make me a bad Christian. If you’re a Christian, it’s your job to love other people as Christ loves you. Period. No questions asked. Eve King Grade 7, Southridge Middle School

Ethnocentrism Dear Editor, Do you think that ethnocentrism is bad? I do. It’s really bad. It’s when somebody thinks his or her religion is better than everybody else’s. Also, ethnocentrism occurs when someone wants to rule over somebody because they think they’re better. Ethnocentrism has been going on ever since Hitler was ruling and killing the Jews. It still goes on everywhere, even in the United States because the rich won’t help the poor. Ethnocentrism is very bad. It was even stared before Hitler started to rule and kill the Jews. It happened when white Americans had slaves to do the farming for them. It happened when negroes were separated from the whites in the middle of the 20th century. Basically, it’s bad to allow ethnocentrism. Anybody who does this, thinks they are god and that they are better than everybody else. Don’t show ethnocentrism toward anybody. Jacob Stetter Grade 7, Southridge Middle School

Allow gay marriage Dear Editor, Gay marriage. Some people think it shouldn’t be allowed. I think it should be allowed. People underestimate gay people. They don’t think they should have equal rights just like straight people, even though they’re the exact same kind of people. They just like different kinds of genders. I would understand why some people don’t think gay marriage is right, but just because gay people like the same gender, doesn’t mean they don’t deserve a regular marriage like straight people do. Exactly 24 states in the U.S are anti-gay constitutional amendment, and only 11 states completely allow gay marriage. Now, that is only in the United States. Imagine how many other states allow and don’t allow gay marriage. All over the way across the world, there are gay people everywhere who want to get married, but can’t because of the laws in their state. Even Indiana has an anti-marriage law. I bet you didn’t expect that our country would create an anti-marriage law? That’s crazy! Every year since 2004 the Indiana state legislature has proposed or voted on constitutional amendment to exclude sane sex couples and their families from marriage. According to “The Williams Institute’s Analysis of the 2010 U.S Census, 11,074 same-sex couples are living in Indiana, representing 4.4 same-sex couples per 1,000 households. So what’s your opinion after everything you just read? Do you agree with anti-gay marriage? Even though your friends might not have the same opinion as you, don’t let them change your mind. Let your voice be heard and see if there’s a way you can stop or help laws and opinions against anti-gay marriages It’s your choice, but if I where you, I’d help stop it. Keysha Kieser Grade 7, Southridge Middle School

Paying athletes Dear Editor, There is a problem with athletes getting paid millions when doctor and teachers don’t even get paid even close to that. They need to stop paying millions to people like Andrew Luck when all they do is play football and not save lives or teach kids stuff. Some teachers only get paid $7.00 to $10.00 dollars an hour. That is ridiculous! Athletes aren’t out there for saving lives. They are out there for entertainment. Don’t get me wrong; I like watching sports, but teachers and doctors need a higher pay. If you spend money on a college degree, then you should get your money back out of it. Nigel Parsons Grade 7, Southridge Middle School

Hunting restrictions Dear Editor, I think that there are way too many hunting restrictions in the town of Huntingburg, Dubois County, and the state of Indiana all together. I’m going to write some down and some that should be changed or at least tweaked a little bit. One of the laws or restrictions I believe should be changed is the amount of shells you can have in your shotgun. For migration birds such as duck or dove, you are only allowed to have up to 3 shotgun shells. I believe that you should be able to have as many as your gun can hold which is 5 unless you have an adapter for your magazine. I think that you should be able to have 5 at the most when hunting migration birds. One of the other laws that I think should be tweaked just a little bit is the hunting areas in town. As of right now, you are not allowed to hunt in town limits. I believe that you should be able to hunt in a woods in town, but if it is like where stores or restaurants are close, you should be limited. If there are woods in town, I believe that as long as you are a good distance away from homes and businesses you should be able to hunt in town. The last law I think should be completely changed or even gotten rid of is the size of the gun that you can deer hunt with in the state of Indiana. As of right now you can’t hunt with any kind of rifle except from a 44cal. or up to a S&W.500. I believe that you should be able to go to any kind of high powered rifle and not just a shotgun. Those are three laws in the state of Indiana that I believe should be change or as I said in the last paragraph completely gone.

Some people might disagree or agree with me on some or all of them. This is my opinion, and maybe some other people might agree with me. Masen Cooper Grade 7, Southridge Middle School

Sick of bullies Dear Editor, I am so sick of bullies! I don’t see why people are mean to people especially when there is no good reason. I know bullies. I have seen them. They are cruel for no reason. People bully because they get rewarded with laughter from the kids that are not being bullied. If you laugh at the person being bullied, you are just as guilty as the bully. It is easy to see why people laugh as well. They think if they laugh with the bully, they will not get laughed at by the bully. Is that the price you are going to pay? Are you just going to sit there and be a bully? Don’t say you aren’t a bully if you are guilty of laughing at a bully being mean because you are. Maybe you won’t laugh but will you stand up to the bully and defend the one being bullied? I don’t think many people have the courage. You are maybe not considered a bully by your peers, but if you watch it happen, you are the same as the bully. No matter if others label you with tattle-tale you have to tell an adult when someone is bullied. You could also just tell the bully to knock it off. Even if you are not technically guilty, you need you take a stand. So stand tall, and if you are bullied, tell someone. Be strong and stand up to the one bullying you. Don’t back down if they hit you. Get back up, walk away, and tell someone. Be the bigger person. Be the stronger fighter and tell. You aren’t doing something wrong when someone bullies you. Stand tall, look up, smile bright, and don’t let bullies bring you down! Megan Stutsman Grade 7, Southridge Middle School

Cyber bullies Dear Editor, I believe cyber bullying is a big issue in our generation. Many kids these days are on social media. Parents think there is nothing going on with their child when he/she is on the internet, but there might be. Kids are too afraid to say anything to an adult when someone is cyber bullying them. All of this nonsense needs to stop. There are a couple of ways this bully can bully on the internet. One way is to message them on Facebook, and say mean things that no one deserves to hear. Another way is posting mean things about them, and saying things that aren’t true about them. All of this needs to stop! It’s makes the cyber bullied person really depressed. The main reason a person bullies people is because they need let others feel their pain. I think all of this cyber bullying should come to a stop, and so should all types of bullying Reagan Peters Grade 7, Southridge Middle School

Reopen hospital Dear Editor, Yes I was born there too! Oh hello, my name is Robbie Bradley. I was just telling my friend about the ST. Joseph Hospital. We were reminiscing about moments spent there. Why did it close? I see people there and the lights on? Scary right! Well it was closed in 2002! People were got fired and lost their jobs. I think it should be reopened because it would save gas and give people jobs. From this, people won’t be homeless and most likely be healthier! If it reopens, the population for having jobs would go back up!!!! Huntingburg would have a better reputation! Now you know why we should open the St. Joseph Hospital! I did my job for writing this, now it’s your job to decide if we should open it back up!!! Thank you very much. Robbie Bradley Grade 7, Southridge Middle School

Teen drug use Dear Editor, Teens in the US everyday use drugs. In 2013, more high school seniors regularly used marijuana than cigarettes as 22.7 percent smoked pot in the last month, compared to 16.3 percent who smoked cigarettes. The United States represents 5 percent of the world’s population and 75 percent of prescription drugs taken. 60 percent of teens who abuse prescription drugs get them free from friends and relatives. By the 8th grade, 28 percent of adolescents have consumed alcohol, 15 percent have smoked cigarettes, and 16.5 percent have used marijuana. People experiment with drugs for many different reasons. Many first try drugs out of curiosity or to have a good time. They might try it because friends are doing it or in an effort to improve athletic performance. Many turn to drugs to ease another problem, such as stress, anxiety, or depression. Use doesn’t automatically lead to abuse, and there is no specific level at which drug use moves from casual to problematic. It varies by individual. Drug abuse and addiction is less about the amount of substance consumed or the frequency and more to do with the consequences of drug use. We need to stop the drug abuse with teen. I believe teens use too many drugs. One way we could stop it is to catch the kids doing it. So if we could, we should stop the drug abuse. Summer Moore Grade 7, Southridge Middle School

War against segregation Dear Editor, Who’s to judge the colors of this world, the color of the people on this Earth? Or the way they live? People aren’t who you think they are when you judge just by the color of their skin. A person could be a different person on the outside, but be the same as you on the inside. A person you judged in a negative way could be someone amazing to all mankind. For all you know, you may be related to them! So why judge the color of their skin? I mean this world comes in so many different colors. Why judge a person by the simple color of their skin? Martin Luther King Jr. lead the revolution against racism and segregation to divide the people into categories of ‘colored’ and ‘not colored’ or ‘black’ and ‘white.’ Leading the civil rights movement changed the world today as we know it. He stands as a symbol of freedom today. “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character,” said Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Rosa Parks, a woman who refused to give up her seat on a bus for a white man, held her place against the fight of discrimination. Her fight resolved in boycotting public transport. Her fight and stand against racial judgment lives on and is forever a part of our history. Levi and Catherine Coffin lead the Underground Railroad to free slaves from the South. Their fight made a difference in the civil war. By freeing slaves, many of them joined the north to fight in the civil war. And now, many years later, all races share our freedom together and give our

kids love and support no matter what color of skin they wear around their hearts. Everybody feels, everybody breathes, and everyone’s heart beats. So what’s the big deal if a person is black, white, different ethnicity, or foreign? Trace Ferguson Grade 7, Southridge Middle School

Legalize immigration Dear Editor, All over the world, people from South and Central America such as Mexico , El Salvador & Guatamela come here illegally. In my opinion, there’s nothing wrong with that. People migrate here from there for a better life, freedom, and a new life. Some people think immigrants come here to start violence and to “steal” jobs. No! They just want a better life. Immigrants jump the border, walk across deserts, and swim across oceans just for freedom. If people from South or Central America come here illegally and they get caught, then they get sent to jail. They have to go to court and go through a cooperation called ICE . You can get papers to get legalized here in the US, but should you pay for freedom? Would you like to spend money just for freedom and papers? We have people who fight for our freedom. Why should that be limited? We don’t all have papers just for freedom. It costs thousands of dollars to try and get people to help you with papers. It takes time to try and get help. You have to go through the process; then you go to Indianapolis & go in a room and try to prove your point. You have to explain and show proof that you want to be here, and that you should be legalized. If you would legalize South and Central Americans, people could come here legally. Then you could save the money used to patrol immigration and create jobs with it. Then the government could build more businesses with that money and earn more as the economy grows. Also a lot of people in American don’t want to work, but most immigrants are willing to work. Just think would you like to do so much just for freedom? Would you like to pay thousands for papers? Would you want a better life if you were in their conditions? LEGALIZE immigration. Lorianna Drew Grade 7, Southridge Middle School

No chickens Dear Editor, Holland will not allow chickens, but why? Could it be because of the possible noise? Is it that they just don’t see the town a fit place for the versatile birds? If I could change just one problem, I would change Holland’s poultry ordinances. Chickens should be allowed because they help control insects, they eat absolutely anything, and they give you free access to eggs every day as long as they are laying them. If you want help controlling those pesky bugs, just keep your chickens in a large confinement or a fenced in yard. If you had dinner scraps, potato peelings, watermelon rinds, or anything else edible, you can just throw it out to your chickens. Doing this will also cut down on the money you spend to feed them. In return for feeding them, they will supply you and your family with quite enough eggs. Each hen lays one or two

eggs a day once they start laying. To change this rule, my dad has already started attending Holland City Council board meetings to see what they are saying about chickens. We keep posted on anything involving them. We have made it clear that we will fight for our right to have chickens and we will not give up until they know that we will not allow them to dictate what goes on in our lives. To also help with this change, my mom and dad have written letters to the editor of a newspaper. We are not asking that they allow all livestock, just chickens, because they help more than harm. Lauren Bailey Grade 8, Southridge Middle School

Locker searches Dear Editor, I feel locker searches are necessary in schools. It will help keep kids safer and will help prevent school shootings. I think anyone caught with any illegal guns, knives, weapons, or drugs should be suspended from the school campus. I believe children shouldn’t be allowed to carry backpacks or book bags to classes or in any rooms. Cameron Berger Grade 8, Southridge Middle School

Drinking, tobacco

If I were in any part of this, I would prohibit all phones during school hours. It causes a big distraction for both the class and the student. That also involves even more time having to learn a subject rather taking a test over that same subject. I believe that all teachers would agree too. Claire Kemper Grade 8, Southridge Middle School

Texting Dear Editor, I am writing to talk about texting and driving. I know it is against the law now, but I am sure people still do it. Its your phone if someone text you, you are going to text them back. When you look down to get your phone you are taking your eyes off the road and you could cause a reck. You are also taking your eyes off the road when you are texting them back. When you get into your car you should put your phone away. Put it in a console so that you are not tempted to text them back. Becuse if you text them back you could cause a crash. If you crash you could kill someone and that would stay with you the rest of your life. If they found that you were texting you could go to jail. This is why you shouldn’t text and drive. Molly Jochem Grade 8, Southridge Middle School

Dear Editor, I am writing about underage drinking and tobacco use. I believe there is a problem with this because of people around them who are doing it. Older siblings, parents, friends, and adults provide the alcohol and tobacco. They, the people who provide it to them, say it is okay to do. Children and teens see them doing it and they set a bad example. Children and teens learn and do what they see. Hopefully, something good can come from this letter and there will be parents who see what a great responsibility they have raising their children. Parents should be responsible parents and know when to be a parent and not a friend. It is better to have an angry, disappointed teen than a dead one. No phones

Homework

Dear Editor, Southridge Middle School does not allow cell phones in schools at all times. I believe that is fantastic. It gives the students time to pay attention in every class, and causes no distraction. Some people may say we don’t pay attention when we have our cell phones, and that may be true for some people, but for others that might not be. If I were to have a cell phone in class, to be honest I wouldn’t use it. I would want to get good grades and learn what I’m supposed to. Therefore who needs a cell phone in class? Southridge High School has permission to bring their cell phones to class. If I were a part of the school committee, I wouldn’t let either one of the schools have their cell phones, due to the causes of not paying attention in class. Making good grades in school is a big priority for many students. Teachers don’t always want to have to stop in the middle of class to stop a student from playing Temple Run on their cell phone.

Dear Editor, I personally think that we students should not have as much homework as we do. Students stress enough as it is. We have our grades and our futures to think about. Many of us children stay up late to finish the gargantuan amount of homework that we could not finish at school. We all need a break every once in a while at least. Take it from a student’s point of view. I have tennis and clubs after school, and I can barely fit in a schedule to do all of my schoolwork and get good grades. I even have to stay up until twelve o’clock in the mornings sometimes just to get everything done. I do not have enough time to get everything done. We students need a break, an I think it is time that we have one. A lot of us work tremendously to get the grades that we have now. I am speaking for the students sake. Dear Editor, Don’t you just love a good basketball game? To have an exciting game you need a good place to play, and what better place to play than Memorial Gym! Once you walk into Memorial Gym, it is like a sea of great history. With pictures of the greats just covering every inch of the wall. The place is massive, holding about 6,000 people! There is only one thing I would change about this gym and that is more parking space. With all the people who want to come there is not enough space to park, and I am afraid that may turn some people away. Therefore we need to have more space to park at Memorial Gym. Puppy Bowl Dear Editor, How many of you have watched puppy bowl? It’s the brand new television show! Well I do. The day of the Super Bowl I watched Puppy Bowel instead and yeah I know (HOW COULD YOU!!!!!). But I have to admit I know more about what’s happening in Puppy bowl than I do football. I’m more of a everything else person, more than sports related girl. So I found the puppies cuter than big, sweaty guy’s. Plus for the half time show in Puppy Bowl they had penguin cheerleaders. Yeah it might be a bit boring because all it is, is a lot of puppies running around with football shaped toys but it’s still cute. But in episode ten they showed the top ten bowl dunks. This show probable wont’ last for long because all their ratings are coming from people like me how like dogs and think puppies are cute. But eventually the ratings will plummet and the show will fail and that’s all

their rely on is the cuteness of the puppies. Vanesa Auffart Grade 6, Nancy Hanks Elementary

Bases loaded Dear Editor, Wack, the ball fly’s into the sky like anything you could think of. I was at a game I was playing in. It was about halftime and we were doing horrible which I didn’t like. I was finally up to bat so I got in the box and I think to myself that I can do it. The bad thing was that it was the last inning and there was three runners on first, second and third, and I was the only chance and I wack it out to the outfield and almost made it over the fence and I was excited. So I get to first then second and stop. I made everyone home, but not me. We didn’t win the game but we made progress. We played as hard as we could. Mason Hobby Grade 6, Nancy Hanks Elementary

Dear Editor, He pulls up and shoots, WHOOSH he drained it. We had a great basketball season overall this year. We all did a great job and played the best we could. Our coaches taught us a lot of different skills this year that has made us better athletes. Our head coach told us a good quote by Bobbie Knight. It said, “offense wins games and defense wins championships.” This quote really inspired us through the whole season as a team. We have worked hard this season and our A team won more than we lost, so far with two games to go. Our B team also won more than they lost. We all worked hard this whole season. The Team was combined form two schools, Nancy Hanks and Lincoln Trail. This season has taught us a lot about teamwork and to work together. Thanks to the coaches that have took their

Pass, dribble, shoot Dear Editor, Pass, dribble, SHOOT! The Heritage Hills 6th grade girls basketball team had an awesome season this year! Not just on the court but on the team as well! I want to thank our coaches for being AWESOME role models and working us out good! I have learned that block-out is very important int he game of basketball! On the other hand I learned that teamwork is the key not just on the court but in life as well! Our record was very good this year....as a team we have now more than we have lost! Snow days Dear Editor, We shouldn’t have to make up all these snow days. Why? I don’t think we should have to make up all the snow days because one time when my mom was in school, they kept missing and missing school and they eventually had to make up the whole spring break because of snow. But anyway, my mom still couldn’t go to school because of even more snow. If we didn’t have to make up snow days, we would be able to do stuff on the days we get off without having to go to school sometimes. Then, people would be able to do things on nicer days. Why? Why do we have to make up snow days? The teacher could just give us extra homework. Hey, it doesn’t matter if we miss a couple days or so. It’s not like our mind will go blank the next day. Anyway, if my mom didn’t get more snow she would have to go to school over the whole spring break! She didn’t like school, ether, just like me. I hope in the future, that we have to never ever make up any more snow days! I wish people had never even thought of making up snow days. And, that is why we shouldn’t have to make up snow days. Brooklyn Knight Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary

Icy roads Dear Editor, The roads shouldn’t be so icy. I wonder why they don’t send out graders anymore. I wish they would do it. I know why the roads are always icy because of the rain mixed with snow. My mom slid off the road on Schnellville Road, three inches from hitting the telephone pole and hit a tree. She called my dad first, then called 911. She was ok, but a little shook up. The headlight broke, the hood has a dent in it, the grill broke, the front bumper broke, and the tow truck came to pull out the GMC Envoy. My mom is getting an Yukon on February 24, 2014. I wish they would always send out graders to grade the ice. If they would send out the graders this wouldn’t of happened. That’s why they need to send out graders. Christopher Divine Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary

Russia Dear Editor, They shouldn’t have put the olympics in Russia. Anywhere could be better than Russia. They shouldn’t have put the olympics in Russia because Russia doesn’t like USA. Did you know that when they got off the plane their phones and computers got hacked? I heard that someone got their medals stolen from the other Olympics he was in. I also heard that the people who are part of the USA cannot go out of the olympics territory with there uniforms. I hope the olympics are never in Russia again. Rachel Borman Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary

Desks Dear Editor, We need newer and bigger desks. Every single day something falls out of my desk. Once I even took out a bookmark and everything fell out. I know what you’re thinking. I should organize it. But if you were me you would agree. It’s rather bigger desks or smaller books. But you know what would change the world? No homework! Yeah that would be a great life. You know what I think we should have? One huge table in the classroom with extra large drawers that we can put our stuff in. So Mr. Editor guy I hope you agree with me to get better desks. Please please please give us new desks. Brice Austin Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary

Delays Dear Editor, There should be no two hour delays at school because I would wake up at 6:30 only to be told to go back to bed. Every time there is a two hour delay we miss first recess and my mom has to take off work. Sometimes I have to go to my

NIE ■ PAGE 33

grandma’s house. Then, my dad picks me up from grandma’s house and drives me across the street to Cedar Crest. I really get tired of mom or dad telling me, “You have a two hour delay at school.” Wouldn’t you get tired of hearing that a lot? Since it’s been really snowy this winter we have had like a billion two hour delays or no school at all. Don’t get me wrong I love going to my grandma’s house and staying home and sleeping but we need to go to school. Two hour delays take up a lot of time and my mom wants to go to work instead of staying home or driving us to grandma’s house. Alexis Lasher Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary

Running track Dear Editor, Pine Ridge needs to have a new running track. They need one because you might fall and scrape your knee. Pine Ridge needs one because I remember one time when my cousin, Alison, was running and she fell. She had a really big scab. It was really ugly. Her cousins tripped and fell too. If they voted on getting better track at school I would vote, yes. In my vote I will put for it to be blacktop because that is what I want it to be blacktop. The school should have lines. So a person has to stay in the lines so they don’t trip the other people if you fall. If they did that I know that not as many people will get hurt while they are running. Jason Welp Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary

Bigger desks Dear Editor, We should have way bigger desks. We should have bigger desks because I have to shove my stuff in my desk to make it fit. One day, I was putting my stuff in my desk and I couldn’t quite fit all of my books in. They should make it longer and wider. We should have bigger desks so kids can fit their stuff in them. We should have more room in our desks. Sabree Myers Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary

Purdue Boilermakers Dear Editor, Purdue Boilermakers need a new football coach because Purdue stunk it up this season. The coach this season looked like he didn’t know anything about football. One time I went to the IU vs Purdue Oaken Bucket game and they stunk. They were running plays like hooligans. But IU was running their play very gracefully. When we left at half time because the game was boring the score was 14-49. They really need a new football coach. The season before last they beat IU in the Oaken Bucket game. I don’t know what happened. Purdue played like they have ants in their pants. If you wanted to go get a snack you wouldn’t miss a thing except IU getting a touchdown. The Purdue football coach should stick to watching football not coaching it. Purdue stunk this season. I think it was because of him. Clay Mason Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary

Smoking Dear Editor, Smoking is bad for you right? Well, I know some people who smoke but they are pretty healthy which is weird. I am going to tell you stuff about smoking. Smoking is dangerous. It is dangerous because it can kill people. And another one is because it can give you lung cancer. Then two are the most dangerous. One time I was at my grandpa’s house and a person came to help him unload a trailer and he smoked. When I got close to him I felt light headed. I hate the smell, and it makes me sneeze. Smoking isn’t only bad for people who do it because when people get in the smoke it is dangerous. Smoking is very bad for you. Smoking shouldn’t be invented. I hope you believe this letter because it is true. Landon Nalley Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary

Bad mix Dear Editor, Memorial Hospital needs a bigger parking lot. The hospital keeps getting bigger but the parking lot is getting smaller and

smaller. One day my mom had a baby the night before. My sister, Grandma and I were going to go to the hospital to visit. Mom and Audrey, my sister was cranky and I was tired and excited. That’s a bad mix for me. When we were pulling in I wasn’t so tired anymore. Aria on the hand was kicking and punching me with excitement. We went through 7 rows in the parking lot. Grandma couldn’t find a spot. Finally we found a spot, but we went through 10 rows. When we were going home cars were all over in front and behind and every side of us. The parking lot was packed but we finally got home safely. So editor do you think Memorial Hospital needs a bigger parking lot? I do and I think other people would agree too. Alice Frehim Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary

Recess Dear Editor, Schools should have a recess longer than 15 minutes each. Recess is so boring since it is only 15 minutes. Schools should have a recess longer than 15 minutes. They should be 1 hour long. At recess we always play swamp monster and 15 minutes is not enough for fourth graders. I remember one time we had just started a new game and then the whistle blew and we had to line up. All of the kids were so sad that recess was over. But we had another one after it. In all we have three recesses at Pine Ridge Elementary School. Recess should be one hour long not 15 minutes long. Anna Striegel Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary

Lockers Dear Editor, Holiday World needs to rebuild those two blue and white slides that were at the beginning of the water park. Anyway, you’ll never guess what they put in place of them. Lockers. Are you kidding me? That’s ridiculous. Every time I was heading to the water park the line was always at the bottom of the slides. That proves that a lot of people loved those two slides. Plus, if its a really hot day people can go to those two slides so they don’t have to walk all the way to another ride. Plus if you want to go to another ride and it’s long, you can go to those two slides to spare some time. I just can’t imagine Holiday World without those two slides. They are the funnest slides that I have ever been in. I really hope my letter will help rebuild those two slides. It would mean so much to me. Kendall Barth Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary

Right track Dear Editor, Kids should not have to make up snow days. Who is with me? Who ever is, you’re are on the right track. One reason kids should not have to make up snow days is because it is only like 10 days you make “up” the whole year. Kids will still remember things that they learn in school. It is not like they forget everything they learn. You can duble the homework that you are supost to do on snow days. One morning we got the call that school would be canceled. I yelled and said Yesss. I went to my babysitter and we went sledding all day. Until I had to go to sleep and I thought I would have to make this day up. That day went so well until I had to make it up. Kids should not have to make up snow days. Kids should not have to make them up because kids need a day off for once on a week day. Mckayla Persohn Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary

Bigger desks Dear Editor, Kids at Pine Ridge need bigger desks. Teachers are tired of having to tell kids to pick up stuff off the floor. The reason Pine Ridge kids need bigger desks because they keep giving us bigger books all the time. But what they do not think about with the bigger books is the less room we have in and on top of our desks. I remember this one time this boy in my class, he has a lot of books and notebooks in his desk. It seemed like his books were

on the floor every day and our teacher was mad at him. My class mate did not know how to deal with it. I think that everyone would want Pine Ridge to get bigger desks. Madison Wathen Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary

Roller coaster Dear Editor, I think Holiday World needs a new roller coaster. One reason is they don’t have enough rides in the Thanksgiving section. It’s a roller coaster! I shall call it ... The Loops! I think I should call it The loops because my family is really tired of me going on The Voyage like a million thousand times! When I was at Holiday World, I rode the Voyage maybe like 10 times in 1 day! I think they should put The loops by the Voyage. That is a really good place to put it. You get to stand in line while you are waiting to get on the Voyage, and watching The loops. Holiday World needs a new roller coaster because people are getting tired of riding the same ones over and over again Taylor Toby Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary

Snow plows Dear Editor, The county needs more snow plows on back roads with really sharp blades. The county needs more snow plows on back roads because every time the road gets iced over the county doesn’t ever come to our roads until the next day. Every time it snows my parents and everyone on our block can’t get out of their driveways and on to the road. So my dad and me have to go plow their driveways and the road for them. When it’s really cold I can hardly stand it. Most of the time it’s just snow but when it’s snow and ice my dad and me can hardly stand it. Most of the time it’s just snow but when it’s snow and ice my dad and me can hardly break it with the four wheeler. So we have to get the tractor and break all the ice which takes two hours. My dad and I are getting tired of doing all that work over and over again. So the county needs snow plows on the back roads right now. The county needs snow plows on the back roads because it’s hard on every one to get out side in the freezing cold and get what ever they need cleared off. Beau Rasche Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary

Bumpy road Dear Editor, I live on a dead end road. It is very bumpy. It used to be a rock road. But now it’s like a road but it has a lot of rock too. I think it is very rough and needs to be softer. I have been living on that road for almost 10 years. I am tired of it already. Everyday i go on it and there is a lot of bumps. The bumps are very very annoying. It really really needs to be blacktopped because blacktops is really smooth and i know alot of people that lay blacktop. My dad, my godfather,my grandpa and i know one other guy. The dead end road is really really horrible I mean horrible! We really need our dead end road to get blacktopped. Alison Welp Grade 4, Pine Ridge Elementary

Updates for restrooms Dear Editor, I think all the restrooms at FES need an update. A door is not on one stall in the girls’ bathroom. I think we should get updates because FES gets barely any water in our sinks. I also think FES needs new restroom floors. They are cracked. There is also an odor in the bathroom. Also, one of our sinks doesn’t work at all. Grace Sutherlin Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Recess needed Dear Editor, I think students need recess. Kids need recess so they can get exercise. Playing helps our brains move. We need recess so we can have fun at school. We need recess so we can be healthy and strong. Recess is fun! Gus Hagedorn Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

YMCA pool

Wanted: A zoo

Jump ropes

Dear Editor, We need a full-time nurse at FES. We need one because people get hurt almost every day. The people that take care of them when the nurse is not here sometimes think they need the nurse. Sometimes they have to call her. We definitely need a full-time nurse. Avari Schneider Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Dear Editor, I want every classroom in Ferdinand Elementary School to have cool jump ropes. With jump ropes, you can get more exercise. If we had good jump ropes, our hands wouldn’t hurt so badly. Jump ropes without handles are painful! Jumping rope is so fun! If we get them I will be so happy! Avery Riley Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

School bus safety

Baseball

Dear Editor, I think on the school bus there should be names on each seat. That way everybody would be in the same spot every day. I also think there should be seatbelts. If there was a wreck, we would be safer. I think these ideas would be awesome. Kyana Hensley Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Dear Editor, I think every school should have baseball, even in the elementary schools. The school would need bats, balls, mitts and catcher’s equipment. The teachers could be umpires. You get exercise and make friends when you play baseball. You also learn how to get along with other people. This is why I think all schools should have baseball. What do you think? Carter Fleck Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Year-round school Dear Editor, I truly believe we should not have year round school. Time off lets people see their parents and have fun going places. The kids deserve a break after all that work. I think this because all people should have a break. It lets our brains rest so we can learn even more. Miles Welp Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Fun with parents Dear Editor, I think students need summer vacation. Kids need to have fun after work hard at school. We need to have fun with our parents. We can also see our cousins. If you have a birthday in the summer, you can have fun with your friends if there is no school. Noah Muller Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Summer vacation Dear Editor, I think Ferdinand Elementary should always have recess for every year because kids need exercise to get strong and to be healthy. Kids will get unhealthy and will get sick, hurt, and make them sore if they don’t exercise. So, let them play and have fun at recess forever and ever. So, please let the kids play all the time so they can get healthy. Brayden Petry Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Our school needs fruits so we can get strong. Our school should have fruits because they are good for you. Reid Howard Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Drink options Dear Editor, I think we should get more drinks for lunch because people might get tired of just drink milk and water. Some are probably going to want Gatorade or apple juice and lemonade. They make all of us healthy, happy, and give us a lot of energy. It wakes up our brains and minds for the rest of the school day. Joel Bueltel Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Fun field days Dear Editor, I really think we need MORE field days so kids can have more fun! It is also good for your body because you are getting a lot of exercise. On field day, we also get to meet new people and we also get to go to new adventures. If you let us, I will be so happy. Jasmine Mireles Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Swimming pool Dear Editor, I think we need a swimming pool at the YMCA. If the people get hot, they can swim. If the people get hot, they can swim. It would help families spend time together. Carter Giesler Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Writing essays Dear Editor, I think we need more essays in grade two. If we do, will do well in grade there. We will also do so well that we will get one hundred percent on most of the tests! Essays could even be some of the homework we do. I believe that we will do really well in grade three. Aubrey Luebbehusen Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Fruits, vegetables Dear Editor, I truly think that at the cafeteria there should be more fruits and vegetables so the kids could grow stronger. Apples, carrots, corn, oranges, and other healthy foods help kids and other people grow stronger. Carson May Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Recess helps teachers Dear Editor, I think that there should be more recess so the kids can get exercise. I think there should be more recess so the kids can have fun. I think that kids should get more recess so the teachers can get ready. I think that the kids should get more recess so the teachers can eat. Mandy Wheat Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Healthy juices Dear Editor, I think in the cafeteria we should have more drink choices. I am tire of drinking milk even though it is good for you. There are juices that are healthy too. May favorite is apple juice. I think other kids would like this too! Trey VanMeter Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

IPads and math Dear Editor, I think all students at Ferdinand Elementary schould have an iPad at school. Students can use their iPads to practice math facts and take more ARs. I like having an iPad in the snd grade. I wish all grades could have one. Rolan Zehr Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Art, music, gym Dear Editor, I would like more time for art, music, and gym. We call those classes “specials” and they are so exciting! If we had more time for specials I could be more creative, be better at singing song, and get more exercise. Specials make me and my classmates happy! Adi Becher Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Pizza, fish sticks Dear Editor, I think Ferdinand Elementary should serve peperoni pizza and fish sticks for lunch all school year long. I think this would be a good lunch because most people like it and it is my favorite. I would love to eat my favorite food every day! Kristopher Fuhrman Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Swimming pool Dear Editor, I would like there to be a swimming pool in Ferdinand. If Ferdinand had a pool, we would not have to drive to Jasper or Huntingburg to go swimming. If we had a pool, more people would exercise and get healthy. It would be fun to have a swimming pool in Ferdianad. Allison Wahl Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

IPads help Dear Editor, I think it would be fantastic to have iPads for all the grades in our school. I would like to have iPads because they help us with math, writing, science, and even knowing the earth better. May favorite app is Math Zombies. We hve an iPad in the second grade and I really enjoy it. Luli Schipp Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Basketball goals Dear Editor, I would like it if there were 8 foot basketball goals at Ferdinand Elementary. I would like them because 8 foot is the height of the basketball goals when I play. It would be easier to make baskets on a shorter goal. I love basketball! Jace Berg Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Art class Dear Editor, I would like art class to come around two times a week instead of once a week for Ferdinand Elementary. I think we should have art more because a lot of kids at our school really like art class. Stephen Perry Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

School garden Dear Editor, I would like for Ferdinand Elementary to do gardening. It would be fun to grow our own fruits and vegetables and then end up seeing them on our trays at lunch! I would like to see us grow carrots, grapes, and strawberries. Our own fruits and vegetables would be a lot healthier than the ones that are delivered on trucks. Ava Fletcher Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Tomato soup Dear Editor, I wish our cafeteria served tomato soup. I love it because it tastes amazing. It is very healthy too! I think it would taste good with carrots. Skyla Smith Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Soccer goals

Bigger menu

Dear Editor, I would like soccer goals on the concrete at our school for recess. I want these goals because we could keep track of the score and stop arguing. Getting soccer goals will make me happy. Garrett Tretter Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Dear Editor, I would like to have more food variety and more desserts at Ferdinand Elementary. I would love to see cheesy lasagna and caramel apples on the menu! If you could do this, you would be fantastic. Madison Sherman Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Soccer nets Dear Editor, I would like to have some new soccer nets at our school. Our ball goes across the road when we get a goal and they we can’t play soccer anymore. It would be awesome if we had some soccer nets. We really need them bad. Owen Raufeisen Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

IPads for everyone Dear Editor, I really want all the grades in Ferdinand Elementary to have iPads. Right now, only 2nd grade has iPads. We get play to play math games that help us tell the time, practice our math facts, and help us learn about fractions. Our iPads even help us practice our cursive handwriting. I want all of the kids to have fun and to learn with iPads. Kennedy Staton Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Swimming pool Dear Editor, I would like a swimming pool at Ferdinand Elementary. Why? It would be fool if we did! We could swim during P.E. for fun and exercise. Kids could learn to swim at school if we had our own pool. Having a swimming pool would be fun for everyone. I love swimming so much! Addison Weyer Grade 2, Ferdinand Elementary

Sybil Ludington Dear Editor, I am writing to you to tell you about Sybil Ludington because she was like a girl Paul Revere. She encourages me by saying, “Even if you’re a woman you can do mighty things!’’ Sybil was only 16 years of age when she did all of these things. I think Sybil Ludington was brave because she went on a road with cowboys and skinners. She was also brave for being unarmed on that road when the enemy was attacking. It was very tragic being on that road unarmed like her. I think Sybil Ludington was important for her midnight ride. On that day she rode 40 miles to gather her father’s army to fight for us in the war. When her father let her go on that ride. At first her father didn’t want her to go and risk her life but she begged so he let her go. Sybil was also important for shaping history. She warned her father’s army about the British which saved us all. So that’s why I think Sybil Ludington was important to me and the whole world. If she wouldn’t have did that we maybe British captives. Sybil is the reason we are not in British hands. Kaylee McCaslin Grade 5, Cedar Crest

forward I was so scared that I couldn’t think straight. I could see there were things flying in the air “I was yelling HELP! HELP!” and no one heard me all they heard was the t190 bobcat dad came to shut it off he said “that I shouldn’t go on things that I don’t know how to run” and said “get in the house”. I did what I was supposed to do I wanted this day to end so badly. I want to tell you what I did last night I drove the t190 bobcat turbo draft when it got out of control was 2 years ago now, I can, dig, gut, and load corn into the trailer I’m bigger now I’m not a kid I’m 11 and I’m in 5th grade and I’m in kids army at my cousins. Now I have to be a couch there I’m there 4 days a week. I’m happy sometimes and mad sometimes. I’m going to be a lineman I will put up lights, power poles. I’m finishing up on this paragraph and I’m going to start on different drafts and I will make better than this one. Dakota Johannemnn Grade 5, Cedar Crest

My big catch Dear Editor, One hot summer day we were fixing the fence in the cow pasture. We were sweating. When we got back to the old farm house I said can I take the old pole up to the pond and my dad said ok. So I walked up the hill to go fishing with the old pole. I was on the dam when it all happened, my pole doubled over and the string went flying. I started reeling and at the same time yelling HELP! HELP! HELP! HELP! I know you are thinking I fell in the water, but no, I was still reeling. That is when I noticed it a huge bass jump out of the water. It splashed and the pond water was in my mouth. At the same time I was smelling cow manure and trying to hold on to the pole. I finally got the fish to the bank and my dad was there. He took the fish off the hook and over the hill he went. I stood there trying to figure out what had just happened and then I bolted down the hill after him. When I got there every one was celebrating without me. At that time I was eight so I was really joyous. They all got their pictures and I asked if I could go back up fishing and they said sure and in about 5 minutes later I hooked the other huge bass. So I almost had two in one day. The fish that I caught weighed 7 pounds. A couple long months later my fish was done at the taxidermy. Now my fish is in my room on the wall where everyone can see the monstrosity that I am proud of. Dylan Bays Grade 5, Cedar Crest

Americans had help Dear Editor. Most people might think that Americans did all of the work. The truth is that others worked to helped them. Even though he was polish, Casimir Pulaski had a huge impact on American history. One reason is because he offered his services to them. He had a true military talent which was fortunate. Casimir served next to George Washington for a bit. Another reason is because he formed a cavalry. It was made up of Americans, Germans, Frenchmen, Irishmen, and Poles. They would seek immediate action. The last reason is that Pulaski saved the Americans from a British trap. He had seen the British planning the trap. They defeated it. That`s three reasons why Casimir Pulaski had a huge impact on American history. Today Casimir has his own day, school, and park named after him. So, that just goes to show you American history is not just about Americans. Tia Brosmer Grade 5, Cedar Crest

Lydia Darragh Dear Editor: I think Lydia Darragh is important because she helped out in the war by spying on the British. Lydia Darragh never gave up. She was a very supporting women. Lydia helped out in the Revolutionary War. She helped out by spying on the British in the room next door. She then told the Americans the British were planning a surprise attack. Lydia also concocted a ruse. She went to headquarters and requested a pass from her cousin to go and get flour at a mill in frankfort. Lydia was carrying an empty flour sack and walked several miles through the snow

before riding toward the rising Sun Tavern. Lydia was a quaker women who supported the war. She was read out of her meetings because of that support. One of her family members brought each ones memorable act to light. I think Lydia Darragh is imporant because she helped out in the war and was spying on the British. Lydia Darragh never gave up during the Revolutionary War. Lydia Schuler Grade 5, Cedar Crest

Saturday morning Dear Editor, On a Saturday morning when everyone was asleep, and I was awake I thought I could make us all breakfast. My dad had sawdust in his eyes and my step mom was helping to take care of him, and my brother was in bed sleeping. I was thinking of making cereal, but I wanted to do something special for us. So I decided to make pancakes. I learned how to make pancakes from my dad. When he didn’t have sawdust in his eyes he was a really good cook. And it turns out I was a pretty good cook myself. I made really good pancakes. My dad was so proud of me he cried the sawdust right out of his eyes. My dad was so proud of me he decided to do something special for me. The special thing was that I went to my cousins for the whole day. I can’t believe my cooking was so good. I was even proud of myself for doing that special thing. Alex Crecelius Grade 5, Cedar Crest

the basal reading books. I personally like reading a chapter book better than the reading book because, to me, the chapter books are not as confusing as the reading books. Another reason supporting my thoughts is chapter books are not as heavy as the reading books. I feel chapter books are more interesting than the reading books. When we read the chapter books we only read a little bit at a time and we answer questions. This will help me understand the chapter book better than the reading books. Amber Theising Grade 6, Cedar Crest

Public pool Dear Editor, My name is Logan Smith and I think we need a public pool. Jasper has one. Huntingburg has one. I think Ferdinand needs one. Even though Holiday World is close, it is too full to enjoy swimming. If Ferdinand had a pool it would get tons of people that would get in it and be another successful business in Ferdinand. Not everyone wants to drive to Huntingburg just to get there and then you have to leave and drive all the way back to Ferdinand. I also think this is a good idea because we need at least one place to cool off during the summer (instead of taking a bath). I also think this is a good idea because not every has the money to go to Huntingburg or Jasper. People could host parties there since it would be easier than holding it at your home. These are some of the reason why I think we should have a pool! Logan Smith Grade 6, Cedar Crest

Coloring contest

Animals need care

Dear Editor, “Hey Kate!” my dad said. “What?” “Want to do a coloring contest?” “Sure! But one question, is there a prize?” “Yes! It is four tickets to the circus!” “Ok, I’ll do it!” So I took the newspaper and realized it was SpongeBob. I remembered we have a spongebob pinata in the basement. So, I went downstairs and got the pinata. Then I went upstairs and got some colored pencils. I colored, and colored, and colored. Finally I was done! I gave it to my dad so he could send it to the Herald Newspaper. When I was in bed I decided to invite my cousin Maddy, my Aunt Cathy, and my mom. Then I thought about my age and figured I wouldn’t win because I was only 5. The next week I went downstairs and my Dad shouted, “Kate you WON!” “Really?!?!” I said questioning and excitedly. “Yep, see for yourself.” I looked in the newspaper, and it showed “KATIE RUSSELL” in bold words. “I can’t believe it! I won!” That was a big surprise to me. So, I learned that if you’re young or old, anything is possible!!!!!! Katie Russell Grade 5, Cedar Crest

Dear Editor, My name is Carrie. I am a sixth grader at Cedar Crest Intermediate School. I think that all animals should have a home. People think they can take care of animals and they realize it’s too hard and just dump them. The animals are abused and need a home. The Humane Society and other places for animals (pound) is overflowing and they do not have enough room for the animals that are being turned in every day. If you have ever watched the commercials of some of the pounds, the animals want someone to love them like they once were. I have an animal of my own. If you give the animal the care and love they deserve, say hello to man’s best friend. Carrie Brown Grade 6, Cedar Crest

Gas station wanted Dear Editor, My name is Abby Eckert and I am a sixth grader at Cedar Crest Intermediate and I think the town of Schnellville should get a gas station. Schnellville needs a gas station because there are quite a few people in Schnellville that need gas. If we have a gas station people don’t have to drive as far to get gas. If you think about it how many people need gas every day in Schnellville and don’t want to drive to Birdseye or another close by town? I know quite a few. Also a gas station would be helpful for a few simple snacks or groceries in a state of emergency. If a snowstorm was coming and you only had a little bit of time then you need to get to a store of gas station fast to get supplies. I hope you take this thought into consideration. Thank you! Abby Eckert Grade 6, Cedar Crest

Chapter books Dear Editor, My name is Amber Theising, and I am a student at Cedar Crest Intermediate School. I want to talk to you about kids reading a book together. I think we should read more chapter books together instead of reading out of

is that you can become a faster typer! Also, when you type on the computer you will not lose it, get it crumbled up or spill something on your homework or assignments unlike paper and pencil. Students get to do homework and projects done a lot quicker. In the classroom, you could watch a video to help you better understand the assignment. You can also help your education and play educational games to help you in subjects that you aren’t doing the best in or that you need help in. That is how technology in schools has changed my life and other students’ lives in the classroom this year. Bralyn Boehm Grade 6, Cedar Crest

No one is perfect Dear Editor, We all have to admit it, we all make mistakes! Some people don’t accept that, sadly! And they’re going to have to learn how to because when they grow up, they’re going to make many mistakes. Some people think that there never going to make a mistake, and that there perfect; but they’re not, and no one is! So stop thinking that you’re perfect. You need to be thankful about what you have. Be nice to people. Just accept you and people for who you are. Don’t make fun of people. Don’t call people mean names. Some people are more sensitive than others, so watch what you say. Tori King Grade 6, Cedar Crest

Kids need exercise Dear Editor, Kids at school need 60 minutes of exercise each day even if it is inside or outside. They need 60 minutes of exercise or the kids will be obese or be overweight. Every school in Indiana should have 60 minutes of exercise because the kids will want to be outdoors when they are home. If they are in shape at school they will want to do more stuff and be more fit. I want to go outside more or have a 60 minute PE class every day .The teachers want to get more exercise but we could not go outside because we do not have enough time in school. Please help! Gavin Knust Grade 6, Cedar Crest

Shooting range

Dear Editor, My name is Gryffin, and I am a 6th grader. I am interested in a weather phenomenon called a sundog. I hope to come across other undiscovered weather mysteries. I think Ferdinand should have a science museum that shows weather experiments both adults and kids can enjoy. There would be a lobby filled with souvenirs and a smile on your face as you leave. Thank you for your time and reading this letter. Gryffin Flowers Grade 6, Cedar Crest

Dear Editor, My name is Gabe Recinos. I go to school at Cedar Crest Intermediate. I would really like a shooting range here in Ferdinand, Indiana. I know there is a 4H Fair here, but it cost money to be a member. The reason I want a shooting range here in Ferdinand is because there are a lot of hunters in Ferdinand. The hunters hunt a lot. Some hunters don’t want to pay money for a membership at a fair. When the hunters go to a place that is free they can take their kids there and show them the proper way to shoot a gun for hunting season. Showing them the proper way to use a gun is important. It would say lives. Gabe Recinos Grade 6, Cedar Crest

Technology

Town pool

Dear Editor, Is there too much technology in schools these days? Students have iPads, computers, Chromebooks, and a LOT more. Are schools pushing the limit on technology in the classrooms? Here is what I think of the technology in our schools. There are some great things about technology, but there are some not so great things about it too. Here are some of my opinions of technology in classrooms. Let’s start with the not so great things first. We, the students, are very used to using technology, but what if our WiFi or Internet connections are cut while we are in school? If the WiFi or Internet connections are cut, then we couldn’t do some of our projects, assignments, and more. Students these days take technology for granted. Instead of learning how to write cursive, we are learning how to type. Typing is not so bad, but we need to keep the old traditions still in schools. Some students don’t know how to use a dictionary correctly, and that’s very sad. What if one day the Internet stopped working? People and students would not know how to do much anymore. The useful part of technology in schools

Dear Editor, My name is Lance. There are a lot of good things in are town, but there is just one thing we need a tow—a town pool. I think we need a pool because it would be fun place to just hang out and have parties. A lot of people say we need one and I think we do because Jasper and Huntingburg have one and Santa Claus has Holiday World. We need a pool in Ferdinand because some people do not like to drive that far. It would be nice to have on hot days when the temperatures are in the hundreds and you have nothing to do when school is out during the summer. It would make good money with all of the people in Ferdinand. I think it would be a great place to make new friends. I think they should put it in the empty area by the YMCA and the library or, if there is not enough land, it could go in the empty area behind the 18 Street park or any other empty land in Ferdinand. Thanks for reading for letter to the Editor. I hope Ferdinand will get a pool. Lance Libbert Grade 6, Cedar Crest

The only reason why mine is still alive is because she is scared of people. That is sad because no one can pet it. It almost killed it self by staying in the stop. Glee Club

Passion in life

Dear Editor, A lot of schools have after school programs. Some programs are turned into clubs. Some clubs that have heard of are art clubs, cooking clubs, music clubs, and many, many others. Out of the many clubs my school has, there is one club that may be just what the school needs. The one club I think our school should have is glee club. I think our school should have glee club because a lot of kids have musical talent, but they don’t know where or how to show it. Some kids want to sing. They don’t have anyone to show them or teach them how. With a glee club anyone and everyone can sing. There also might be some kids that like singing and love to dance. Glee club would give them a chance to do both. Glee club is educational because you have to learn to read music, learn how to sing high pitch and low pitch, and you also have to learn how to make all sounds with your mouth and figure out who sings what. It can also get kids to exercise by dancing and learning moves to different songs. Another way glee club can help students is that they may see they have something in common with other students that they never really knew or talked to before. Glee club can also help kids express themselves in ways they never thought they could. It can also be a place where kids can discover a talent of singing or dancing that they never knew they had. Like the time in fourth grade at our spring talent show. I loved a cool song and wanted to sing it so bad. I was scared because every time someone sang in our grade that person got laughed at and made fun of. I did not want to be that person. Because of that reason, I didn’t want to tell anyone that I was singing. When I got up on stage in front of the whole elementary school I felt like I could cry, throw up, run off the stage or just sit there like a bump on a log. After I sang my song, everyone clapped. When I went back to my class I thought everyone was going to laugh and make fun of me. I was all worked up for .... nothing. Everyone told me that I was amazing, wonderful, talented, and that they never thought I could sing so good. Other students could experience this same feeling just like I did, if there was a glee club. After that talent show, I felt like I could do anything in the world! It was a feeling I had never felt before in my life! I was so relieved afterwards because I had accomplished something I never thought was possible for me. Glee club could be just what some students need to push to be in an uncomfortable, but exiting place, where they can work hard to accomplish and realize that they can reach their dreams and goals no matter how impossible they may seem. Mia Smith Grade 5, Dubois Middle School

Dear Editor, I think there would be so many people that would agree with me. Even if they have a different passion in their life. I know that there are a lot of 5th graders that like to draw and color, so that means there is a lot of artist out there. If I believe an 11 year old can be an artist then so can you. I think it would be fun if we learn about new things we didn’t know before. Madison Knies Grade 5, Dubois Middle School

Best grandma Dear Editor, I have the best grandma in the world. She deserves a award because she helps me with every thing I need. I don’t know what I’d do with out her. I’d probaly lose my head! My grandma always have something for me, my brothers and cousins to eat after we got off the bus from school. Like a few days ago she made turtle soup and me, my dad, my aunt, my cousins and my brothers ate it all! If I spend the night at her house she always has breakfast for me like pancakes or biscuits and gravy. When she didn’t have any thing to eat she would go to the grocery store before we got home from school. She has the best cooking ever! Since I was little I would always fall down, crash on my bike or trip over myself. I was really clumsy when I was little. I would always have some kind of cut or scrap on me and my grandma would always wrap me up. Since my parents weren’t home when I got off the bus there was nobody to make me feel better but my amazing grandma. She had every thing for any situation like guaze, band aids, sauve, and tape. My parents would always work after I got off the bus so my grandma would let me, my brothers, and my cousins stay at her house till our parents got home. Since my brothers were mean they would never help me with my home work so my grandma would try to help me when she could. Sometimes she didn’t understand it but she helped any way. So you can see that my grandma does a lot for me. That’s why I think my grandma deserves a award. Conner Troutt Grade 5, Dubois Middle School

Good or bad Dear Editor, In some schools students do not earn grades. Some say grades cause to much competition and not enough learning. But I think grades are good. One important reason for grades is because if you want to go to college. The school looks at the grades you got in high school. The college will determine if they will accept you or not based on the grades you got in certain classes. Another important reason for grades is to be able to track your progress in a subject. This will help determine were you need help at or how well you are doing in a subject. My friend said I don’t like grades. But I think grades are good. If we did not have grades we would not know what standards we were at. Colleges would not pick us because they would not know if own grades were. As you can see grades are good to have. I hope this changes your mind about grades. Pierce Brinkman Grade 5, Dubois Middle School

Spell bowl practices Dear Editor, During the school year there are many academic activities to do that are really fun. Some academics that you may consider are math bowl, spell bowl, and academic bowl. Other academics are more fun than others. But, spell bowl can’t be beat. Spell bowl has two main things you do practice and then of course the competitions. I do believe practices are a lot more fun than competitions. Spell bowl is a lot of fun and quite a lot of people participate in this academic. In the competitions eight people spell nine words. The ninth word is usually used as a tie breaker. The spell bowl word list has about 1,500 words that you have to learn how to spell for the competitions. Spell bowl takes a lot of practice, so you have to be able to dedicate yourself to it. If you don’t like spending a lot of time on something then spell is not the academic for you. Competitions can be fun, but practices are a lot more fun. Spell bowl participants get to know their teammates a lot better in practices. In fact teammates become closer and it helps them do better in competitions because they have a lot of support from their teammates. In practices there is not a lot of pressure and apprehensive. You seem to do worse in competitions because you are very skittish. In practices you have more time to think about the word than when you are in competition. You usually have to write the word really fast and if you have to think about the word that takes time off on writing the word. I can understand why you like pressure at the competitions, but if you are under a lot of pressure it can cause you to not do your personal best. This could cause you to get a lot of words wrong and get a bad score for your team. I totally agree with you on the bus rides to the competitions. Those bring back a lot of memories (Elizabeth’s dance moves). I believe that trying to get a personal best score is a great idea, but if you are thinking about reaching your personal best then you aren’t really thinking about the words you are spelling. As you can see spell bowl practices are a lot better than competitions. Because there is no pressure in practices, you don’t have to worry about messing up. Spell bowl practices make spell bowl a lot more fun. Allison Roach Grade 6, Dubois Middle School

of food are wasted or gave to the poor in shelter homes. Some are eaten by critics for taste tests, or in eating competitions such as hotdogs or corndogs. There is a huge conflict between the two. In my opinion I would rather have a delicious hotdog. I see that hotdogs or corndogs could be decidable. Hotdogs are usually cheaper depending on what kind of brand you get. They also don’t have the grease that corndogs have. “Instead of corn bread, hotdogs have buns so it would have to use buns, in my preference. As corndogs are good they are just not the best and this is why. Hotdogs usually come in buns or just on a plate. This helps because things don’t fall off if you hold it sideways, these things being ketchup or mustard. Do you know how corndogs usually come on a stick? Well with a hotdog you don’t have to worry about biting into the stick. You won’t get splinters from them either, this is a good thing. Hot dogs can be healthier because they don’t have the buttery cornbread, as long as you don’t drown the dog in toppings. As the hotdog isn’t breaded it is most of the time eaten in a bun so you pretty much get the same effect. The bread on the corndog does not hold the ketchup on as the hotdog bun does. Corndogs have a stick that may be easy to hold but it could break off little pieces of wood in your mouth. This could be a huge problem and could sting very bad. Corndogs are good on the go but it is still hard to dip in ketchup when you’re in the car. Hotdogs most of the time already have the condiments on them. As you can see the hotdog is a better choice in eating choices and is deliciousness. From now you should choose what you want but just think about the hot dog. Now you can see why I would choose this over a corndog. Bryce Oeding Grade 6, Dubois Middle School

M&M’s or Skittles Dear Editor, Almost every one likes sweets now and then. Some sweets have chocolate in them. M&M’s have both chocolate and a hard shell. I believe that M&M’s are the best kind of candy. Many people eat candy, skittles, M&M’s, and more. While it tastes good, it causes cavities, and some times stomach aches. Most dentists don’t recommend sweets. Sometimes when kids want a snack they head to the candy dish to get something to eat. Parents want their kids to eat healthy so the M&M Company is making new zero calories chocolate. They are better for you, and they have the same great taste. You can customize your M&M’s for Valentine’s Day, and other special equations. They can say be mine, or have a picture on them. The M&M Company has made many different types of M&M flavors. Some of their flavors are cherry, mint, raspberry, and candy corn just to name a few. These are just a few reasons I think that M&M’s are the best. Some people like other types of candy like Skittles for instants. Skittles have a gum texture when you break the shell. They also have brighter colors than M&M’s. I get all of these reasons. But, I still believe that M&M’s taste better. I believe this because chocolate is my favorite snack. As you can see there are many different types of candy. Even if you don’t like the candy, if you try it you may like it. As you can see, M&M’s are still my favorite candy. Sara Schepers Grade 6, Dubois Middle School

Exotic animal as pets Dear Editor, Have you ever wanted an exotic pet? Many people want to keep exotic animals as pets. They want animals you would see in a zoo. They might think it would be cool to own one but it can be very dangerous. To own one you have to have a permit. People shouldn’t keep exotic animals as pets for serval reasons: they could harm you, you are most likely harming them, and non-domesticated animals can suffer. Exotic animals can harm us in many ways. They can physically hurt us. Even if the animal is tamed, there is still a chance that the animal could turn on you. Wild animals still have their instincts in them. Wild animals can also carry diseases that can spread to humans. You may not know it but they could have rabies, ringworm, tuberculosis, and much more. For example a little boy got a disease from his pet rat and later

he died. These animals could even mess up the ecosystem in their neighborhood by releasing diseases on plant life and acting as predators. However, humans are most likely harming the animals. A lot of people don’t have the facilities nor resources to care for the animal. For example some species of monkeys can travel for miles so they like to have a lot of space. People usually don’t provide enough room for these animals. People also don’t realize how time consuming keeping an exotic pet can be. All the animals being kept as pets are not very happy. Scientists have proven that exotic pets like to be in their natural habitat with others like them. These animals could also become instinct because very few people breed them. It is not safe to keep a non-domestic animal. Domestication is to tame an animal, to live in close association with humans as a pet so it loses it’s ability to live in the wild. Domestication can take years and many generations. Non-domesticated animals can suffer greatly. They are very timid and fearful, and most will go back to their instincts. They belong in the wild. Some people want an exotic pet because they think it would be awesome and they could be the coolest person in their neighborhood. Others might not know the risks of it. For those who do know the risks they could like the thrill of it, or think they are responsible and can own one. However, they could just go see these animals in zoo. In conclusion, I believe people shouldn’t be allowed to own an exotic animal as a pet. People shouldn’t keep exotic animals as pets for serval reasons: they can harm you, you are most likely harming them, and nondomesticated animals can suffer greatly. I can see why they might want to own one because they are very beautiful creatures, but you can always go visit them in a zoo. It would be much more safe for everyone. So now do you want a exotic animal as a pet? Lauren Lorey Grade 8, Dubois Middle School

Drinking age Dear Editor, When you turn 18 you become a legal adult, can smoke, and can vote, so why not drink? Here lately the talk in the government has been about lowering the drinking age to 18 instead of 21. Most people want the government to lower the drinking age, but some think it would be better if it stayed at 21. They should lower the drinking age to 18 because everything else is legal at 18. Most 18 year olds drink anyway, and lowering it wouldn’t really change much of anything. When you turn 18 you can live on your own, vote, and smoke. We should be able to drink at 18 because you can do all of these other things that take just as much responsibility to handle (if not more). They say that 18 year olds aren’t responsible enough to handle being able to drink, but how much responsibility could you gain within three years? And that is one reason why I think that they should lower the drinking age. Another reason why they should lower the drinking age is that most 18 year olds drink anyway. I understand that doesn’t make it right, but if they are already drinking then if you make it legal it won’t change anything. If they are already drinking and not getting in any trouble, then that just proves that they are drinking responsibly. More than 70% of 18 year olds drink already, and only about 16% of those teens have gotten in trouble for drinking. And last but not least, if they were to lower the drinking age it wouldn’t really change anything. It wouldn’t make the amount of drink go up very much, and if anything less people would probably get in trouble due to them not getting in trouble for under age drinking. On the other hand, some people believe that lowering the drinking age could have negative affects. Some people believe that if they lower the drinking age it could lead to more teens binge drinking. Which is where you don’t drink very often, but when you do drink you drink a lot. I don’t think that this should be a very big concern because, if teens wanted to binge drink they would be more likely to do it when they are drinking underage. They wouldn’t want to drink very often due to the fear of getting caught, so when they do drink they will be wanting to drink more. So in conclusion, I believe that the drinking age should be lowered to 18. Lindsy Jones Grade 8, Dubois Middle School
