Health Check
Spa Week: Seven Days to Live Healthier and Happier A recent study from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital shows that the spa offers more than just pampering and relaxation – it can improve one’s overall health. The study, which included 15 participants of a wide variety of ages, confirms that a week-long spa stay corresponds with positive changes in physical and emotional well-being. This is one of the first instances in which scientific data has been attached to the health benefits of spa visits, therefore creating groundbreaking headway for the spa and wellness industry. Long before having science on its side, Spa Week has successfully spread this message for almost a decade with its biannual, signature $50 treatments.

DC LIFE Magazine | SPRING 2013
Moving into its 18th installation, Spa Week’s Spring 2013 Event will take place from April 15th – 21st when hundreds of spas (day, medical and resort), yoga and Pilates studios, fitness and nutrition centers and other health and wellness practices nationwide will offer up to three signature treatments, normally costing $100 all the way up to $500, at the major discount of just $50 each. Millions of spa-goers will look to these treatments to enrich their personal health and well-being, rather than just to pamper themselves. Whether it’s managing chronic physical conditions, decreasing pain and stress, learning healthy eating habits, achieving weight-loss goals, or just simply
improving quality of life, Spa Week offers an extensive menu of wellness services for consumers to better themselves on a budget. From the most modern massage and bodywork techniques and cutting-edge skincare procedures to fitness, nutrition and mind/body classes, there’s something for everyone on the Spa Week menu. Need a Fix? By Maha Chaudhry Well I know just a place for that, and it’s actually called The Fix. There are a few things that come close to a nice massage after a crazy week. And fewer places that come close to really ensuring you will leave relaxed and relieved. The Fix is one of those places. Jeannie Pilling, owner and lead wellness specialist, not only performs these massages but has been on the leading edge of wellness treatments and healthy living philosophy for over ten years. With her, you know you’re in good hands. I knew I was. The ambiance was personal and chic, not to mention relaxing and almost hidden in a corner of an Arlington street. It felt nice because I felt as though the place was in service just for me. I feel as though Jeannie prefers the intimate atmosphere for her clients. It’s no wonder her usual clients visit her a couple times a week. At The Fix you will pleasantly surprised with many massage options and techniques. To list a few: Walk it Out (Ashi-thai massage) and The PowerHouse (sports massage). These two are also the most popular. Some other fix-es include: Nerve-ahhh-na (relaxation for anxiety and tension massage), Hot Stone Zone (hot stone massage) and there’s more! But the treatment I got done was not your ordinary massage, at least not one that I had received before. It was the
20

steam therapy massage. I have to say, it worked for me. And I am convinced it would work for others. As I lay on the bed with a tent looking cover over my body, releasing steam into my skin, I felt as though I was receiving an exterior body detoxification. It felt great. It was warm enough to feel moisture but comfortable enough where it was still relaxing. According to Jeannie, the combination of massage and steam is amazing because muscle soreness and tension just melt away. “Steam is recognized as an effective treatment for a wide variety of conditions such as mild depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, nicotine addiction, hypertension, chronic pain, respiratory conditions and cardiovascular disease.” I was surprised to learn that steam therapy also boosts the immune system and improves circulation. All the many reasons to try it, not to mention, prettier skin! I could get used the feeling—as I obviously enjoyed the experience. Can’t say you won’t be hooked to not only the steam, but Jeannie’s many wonderful techniques. More about Jeannie and The Fix When I asked Jeannie what inspired her to get into massage therapy, she told me that she had always wanted to be able to heal others, and to lay her hands on their hurt and do what she could to take that pain away. And that is exactly what I felt she aimed to do when I was on the hot seat. I had knots tighter than a rubber band tied to its fullest potential. I could tell how determined Jeannie was to not only get rid of my knots, but make sure I was more at ease. And I was.

What is the HCG Diet? The HCG Diet Protocol introduced by Dr. A.T.W. Simeons, a specialist on obesity and weight regulation, is used to help many people overcome weight loss resistance. The program utilizes a natural hormone that is produced during pregnancy called Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG). HCG causes the hypothalamus area of the brain to trigger a release of abnormal fat stores. When administered in relatively small doses and coupled with a very low calorie diet, people routinely lose 20 or so pounds in 30 days. HCG has helped thousands of people lose those stubborn pounds. In addition to weight loss, many patients who have completed the HCG program also experienced many other health benefits including; a drop in cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar. Eric North and his staff at Physicians Rejuvenation Center (located in Takoma Park) are our D.C. Hormone Therapy Experts. He and his staff have helped hundreds of clients reach their bodyweight goals. We contacted him to learn more about his HCG program and clear away the myths that cloud so much of his job.
SPRING 2013 | DC LIFE Magazine
23
Who is the HCG diet for? It’s for men and women, young or old who want to lose a minimum of 10 pounds. We don’t recommend this diet to those who want to lose less because this diet is so effective. People have lost well over 100+ pounds on this diet so rest-assured it is effective. But of course it is recommended to check with your doctor before beginning any new weight loss program. *Do Not use any weight loss program if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or are nursing!
How does HCG help me lose weight? HCG appears to act on the hypothalamus, signaling the body to release stored fat into the bloodstream where it is then available to be used by the cells for nourishment. this alone will not cause weight loss, though, unless you reduce your food intake and monitor what goes in. this forces the body to use the mobilized fat from the bloodstream. HCG causes the release of abnormal fat without affecting structural fat and muscle tissue.
What is the Hypothalamus? the hypothalamus is a part of the diencephalon area of our brain which controls all of the autonomic functions of the body, including breathing, heart beat, digestion, sleep and the complex functions of the endocrine system. one of the many functions of the endocrine system is regulation and control of your metabolism and weight.
Do I have to follow a ‘special’ diet while taking HCG? to be successful losing weight you must follow the entire HCG Diet Protocol. HCG is only effective for weight loss if it is taken while strictly following the HCG Diet Protocol, including the 500 calorie diet. taking HCG alone (without the diet) will not cause you to lose the abnormal fat. HCG takes effect when you reduce your food intake so that the mobilized fat will be used for your body’s energy needs. If you fail to follow the diet you will fail to lose weight. If you only follow the diet without taking HCG, you are simply starving yourself because there is no fat in the bloodstream to burn. of course you can’t do the low calorie diet forever but the HCG diet plan is not designed that way. this is about undergoing a short term program to make a lasting and sustainable change. You will be doing it for several weeks only and then go back to a “normal” diet. once you go back to a “normal” diet you will be making smarter choices with food and most HCG Dieters report not being nearly as hungry or eating as much as they used to. •It is recommended to check with your Primary Care
Physician before beginning any new weight loss program, although our Medical Director will conduct a thorough interview and provide a short physical at the time of your consult.

DC LIFE Magazine | SPRING 2013
Why can’t I just go on a 500 calorie diet without the HCG? In order to answer this question you need to understand how the body stores and uses fat. there are three separate fat stores in the body: 1. Normal fat: this type of fat can be likened to a checking account from which the body can easily draw energy or deposit it as needed. Normal fat doesn’t take a lot of effort to lose. 2. Structural fat: Pads the various organs, protects the arteries and cushions the bony prominences. It is vital to your health and well being. Yet, on the typical “starvation” diet, this is the fat you lose when the normal fat is depleted. 3. Abnormal fat: this is much like a bank safe deposit box, where fat is stored and basically locked away. this fat is very difficult to lose via exercise and calorie restriction, but with the help of HCG the body readily pulls fat from these “last resort” fat stores rather than structural fat. Bottom line: on a 500-calorie diet without HCG, the body uses the normal fat and then starts to use the structural fat as well as muscle. Losing your structural fat and muscle tissue can adversely affect your health and well-being as well as slow down your metabolism. In addition, “starvation” diets without HCG can cause you to be excessively hungry, which is typically not true for those using HCG.
With only 500 cal./day allowed, will I be constantly hungry? It is common to feel mild hunger during the first few days. this will pass and by the second week you will find your servings to be satisfying. Drinking lots of green tea during the day (we like the cold, fruity sweet tea sweetened with stevia) helps as a natural appetite suppressant and can increase your energy level. overall, most people report that they have plenty of energy and feel good while on the program. Do I have to exercise while on the HCG diet? Exercise is not a mandatory part of the program. While vigorous exercise may increase the amount of weight you lose while on this plan, it can cause exhaustion. that leads to discouragement and frustration. However, we do recommend moderate activity for all of the other benefits you receive, including stress relief and cardiovascular health. our suggestion for those who want to exercise is that you walk for 20 to 30 minutes daily. Walking is great exercise and contributes to your health in a variety of ways: relieving stress, keeping bowels moving, conditioning your cardiovascular system, and encouraging better blood/oxygen circulation. When you are are finished with the HCG diet regimen and are back on a regular diet, you can then pick up the intensity of your exercise routines.

When Friend Zoning Occurs I was recently this question:
Friend-zoning A Woman:
It is difficult to know whether there will be chemistry on an Internet date. If I meet a woman who I am not feeling romantic chemistry with, how can I friend zone her?
•
-S This is a great question, and one I don’t often hear. Women and men do ask how to avoid the friend-zone, and women ask how to put men in the zone, but men don’t usually ask about putting women in the zone. Men generally know pretty quickly if they are not attracted to a woman. Whether you’ve met her on or offline, you just are not feeling it, but you’d like to hang out with her as friends in the future (without leading her on). What do you do? Friend-zone her. But, you want to do it in a cool way.
Send in your questions to Jason, resident dating coach of daygamer.net, at relationships@ dclifemagazine.com. We may feature it on our next issue!

In a social circle situation, you may HAVE to friendzone a woman and do it in a cool way so that she does not interfere with you pursuing other women in the circle. Reading books on flirting/body language (such as Superflirt and Superdate by Tracey Cox) should be helpful, so that you realize early on if a woman is into you; this way you know there is an issue and can friend-zone her before she gets too into you. If it is a date, you obviously still do not want lead her on-- act like her buddy. Get the meeting off of a “on a date” vibe to a “friends hanging out” vibe. Tell her “I’m glad we met up. I’m always looking for cool new friends.” Tell her that you might have friends who she’d like. By offering to set her up with friends (or even to bring her out with a group of your friends to see if she has chemistry with anyone), you are taking the focus off the possibility of the two of you actually dating. Stick to your guns. If you try and friend-zone her, she may try to talk you out of it or even sexually escalate you, but if you aren’t interested, it is better to just move on than to “settle.”

A Sound Match: Using Music to Set the Mood Music, as I often like to say, is the elixir of life. Without it, movies would fall flat, car rides would be dull, restaurants would be lacking atmosphere, and bachelor pads would have nothing to fall back on. Music is what sets the mood. The right music can ramp up the excitement and get you hotter than a cat in heat or dampen the mood faster than a mast that can’t set sail. On the first few dates the key to setting the mood with music is to make it seem like its natural. You don’t want someone to enter your humble abode only to find black ambient lighting, roses everywhere, and a set list of stereotypical sexy songs. But if you do plan on getting it on, you do want to create some sort of ambiance so that your lover can get in the mood. First things first, you want to be able to turn on your computer and just press play. You don’t want to start fumbling to make a play list or you’ll risk slowing down the momentum too much. Have some pre-made playlists but nothing so obvious it screams “I-madethis-to-have-sex-to.” In other words, do not even think about playing “Sexual Healing” (Marvin Gaye) “Sex on Fire” (Kings of Leon) or “F--k You Tonight” (Notorious BIG). Unless you want your date to think you have the sensibilities of a fourteen-year-old boy. Lest you think this is all too much work, think again. The last thing you want is for a randomly inappropriate song to come on and kill the ambiance. I was once making out with a guy I really liked, only to have the song “Separate Ways” (Journey) come on. Nothing is more of a mood killer than the heartfelt wails of Steve Perry. Though I didn’t laugh out loud, I most certainly chuckled in my head and on some level it dampened my mood. Especially when the next song ended up being “Born in the USA”, (Bruce Springsteen). My favorite (and the easiest) approach is to take is to simply play an album or artist. It takes away the
28
DC LIFE Magazine | SPRING 2013
premeditation factor yet shows that you are savvy and thoughtful enough to choose something appropriate. Some good bets if you just started dating are Portishead or Massive Attack. With the slow heavy rhythms and fuzzy singing, they’re sexy without being obvious. Now if you’ve been dating for awhile, by all means go crazy! This is the fun part. Get as wild and crazy as you want to be. Motley Crüe”Girls, Girls, Girls”? Sure! Prince’s “Gett Off”? Why not? Bad Company’s “Feel Like Makin’ Love”? The options are endless when you’ve been dating someone for awhile. Now’s the time to be more specific when it comes to setting the mood. You can go for romantic and sweet, rough and fast, or slow and sexy. In the words of Axl Rose, anything goes.

Career Corner
Accountability: A Key to Success By Liam Hickey
There are a few people out there who can drive themselves and manage progress towards their goals by themselves. My brother is one of them. For the rest of us, we need a sounding board, encouragement, a second opinion and sometimes just a kick in the butt. We need accountability partners. I would not be writing this column, have my own business, live in another country, or be the person I am today without my accountability partners. They have driven me forward, picked me up when I was down, kept me focused and called me out on my excuses. To quote Deepak Chopra, “Expanding your awareness is the best thing you can create in life, because it serves as the foundation for meaning, purpose, inspiration, love, and personal evolution.” Well, this awareness can start by working with others. Job searching offers little encouragement, even less feedback and big disappointments. In my book, “Hold My Hand! … and find me a job,” One of the biggest pieces of advice I give is this: WORK WITH SOMEONE! Why? There are several reasons. First, you magnify your search and visibility. Your partners keep their eyes and ears open for you, and you do the same for them. You also combine your professional networks for more connections, knowledge and opportunities. Next, you get reminders about your priorities. We all get distracted by stuff. It’s normal. With an accountability partner, you have a regular reminder to keep you focused. You also get different perspectives. When you write a résumé or cover letter, you think it’s great, regardless of
30
DC LIFE Magazine | SPRING 2013
what you wrote. This is because you have invested a lot of time, energy, and emotion into it, and you feel you’re ready to show someone else. A recruiter or manager doesn’t care about your hours of personal effort, just finding the right person. Your accountability partner can give you that fresh, honest perspective you need before you submit your application. In addition, accountability partners act as sounding boards, helping to resolve problems. My accountability partners and I routinely “peel the onion” to discover the root causes of problems in order to develop solutions. Your accountability partners will help you do the same. An accountability partner will also call you out on your excuses, help you face your fears and celebrate your successes with you. All in all, it’s a pretty good deal. So, how do we do this? Step 1: Identify potential partners. There may be accountability groups in your area already. Search Meetup.com, Facebook, and LinkedIn for “job search,” “networking,” and “career.” Also use keywords for your target career. For a more general group, which will have a wider array of people, perspectives, and experience, look for “accountability,” “mastermind” or “metaphysics.” (“Mastermind” in this context is a synonym for “accountability,” and metaphysics groups often focus on attaining people’s desires.) Alternately, think of someone you know whom you can trust, will support you, and recognizes excuses vs. real problems. This could be your accountability partner. Step 2: Compare schedules. Regularly scheduled meetings are critical to make this work, so find a realistic day and time that you can commit to weekly. Not everyone is available when you are, so you may
need to ask several people or groups to find something that works for you.
you are still learning each other’s goals. That takes explanation.
Step 3: Learn the Q&A. You will learn to ask certain questions, like: • How does that make you feel? (If the response isn’t a feeling, ask again.) • What tasks are involved? • What resources do you need to accomplish that? • Why didn’t you get that done this week? • What do you imagine when you think about …? (Ask about details and “What else?”)
Take notes, both for yourself and others. Remind yourself of your action items and commitments, and remind your partners of theirs.
It’s just like dating. The more you communicate, the better the results, and you have to see each other regularly for it to go anywhere. Meet often and prepare to succeed. Another challenge is time. Meetings can run long if you let them. Longer meetings can be helpful, but some people don’t have the extra time to spare. Keep in mind, though, that the initial meetings will be longer, because
WARNING: You can’t go back. Once you decide to take charge of your future and pursue your dreams, your thinking will change forever. You will look at friends and family differently. Your conversations with others will contain poignant questions and practical advice. People will envy you for your determination, strength, and courage. In a great way, you will never be the same. Job searching is an area in which accountability partners and mastermind groups can have a huge impact on results. They have been a major factor in my life. I recommend them highly, and I think you will move your career forward much faster with them.

There, the young and talented Executive Chef Nate Lindsay conjures up dishes from the simple to the sublime with a sophistication that belies his age. Despite the restaurant’s hotel lobby locale, do not cross its threshold in search of an all you can eat dinner buffet. The goal of Jardenea is

Dining Review to present guests with the freshest ingredients prepared in imaginative new ways while also raising awareness about food, good health, well-being and environmental responsibility. DC Life magazine was invited to the restaurant’s private preview dinner where Chef Lindsay, General Manager Joe Dantoni and Culinary Director Ted Peters treated guests to a five course sampling from their eclectic menu to introduce the restaurant’s farm-to-fork sourcing concept. The first course, a refreshing salad, consisted of artesian mixed greens, ambrosia apples, tart cranberries, dried cherries, red radicchio, sultanas, spiced walnuts, and toasted pepitas with a pomegranate vinaigrette. This salad was accompanied by Anterra Pinot Grigio 2009 from Italy. The second course was a Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab Bisque with shitake mushroom and lump crab vol-auvent, accompanied by Simi Chardonnay 2010 from Sonoma County, California. Unfortunately, I could not partake of this creamy delight due to a shellfish allergy. The third course was a delicious Coriander Dusted Chesapeake Rockfish with antebellum blue corn grits and amber roasted piquillo pepper fricassee, accompanied by Primarius Pinot Noir 2010 from Oregon. Delighted by its unique texture and subtle flavor, many guests asked Chef Lindsay to share his secret for the grits. A Mulled Apple Granita with roasted Bartlett pear nage served as a palate cleanser before the fourth course,

which was a mouth watering creation featuring a Cast Iron Seared “1855” Fillet of Beef with white truffle pommes dauphine and roasted shallot demi-glace, paired with Duckhorn 2010 Paraduxx from Napa Valley, California. The fifth course was a decadent Chilled Autumn Pumpkin Creme Brulee with spiced pepitas and nutmeg scented Chantilly, accompanied by Fonseca 10 year old Port from Douro Valley, Portugal. Chef Lindsay announced each course and shared information about the local origin of several ingredients with enthusiasm. Overall, dining at Jardenea was a most enjoyable experience. If only I could have enjoyed the crab bisque it would have been my favorite dinner of the year. I vowed to return to this establishment within two months or less. Thank you Chef Lindsay, Joe Dantoni, Ted Peters and all of your staff for a truly fabulous dinner. Finding Harmony at Nick’s Riverside Grill By Nadine Bartholomew, The Good Foodie Photography by Jennifer Jordan-Harrell While on our way to watch a performance at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, DC Life Magazine photographer, Jennifer and I decided to grab a late lunch at the newly renovated Nick’s Riverside Grill (Nick’s). Nick’s is a fun casual restaurant located in Georgetown’s Washington Harbour that serves American food with an Italian twist. Happily the lunch service remains fast at Nick’s, so we were seated quickly and able to settle down to contemplate lunch. For my appetizer, I ordered the Spicy Steamed farm-raised Canadian P.E.I Mussels in Wine and Fennel sauce. For my entrée, I got the Grilled Atlantic Salmon with Toasted Cous Cous, Rapini, Sesame, and Hoisin Vinaigrette. Jennifer had the 3 Tomato Salad with Mozzarella, Black Olive, Red Onion, Pesto and Balsamic Vinaigrette for her appetizer, and Nick’s Burger with Caramelized Onions, Cheddar, Grilled Tasso Ham and Basil Aioli for her main course.

Jennifer and I marveled at how different the place looked. We believe the designers may have followed the principles of feng shui for their layout, because in addition to maximizing the spectacular views of the majestic Potomac River through walls of windows, the restaurant’s décor was open and uncluttered featuring many mirrors, colorful artwork from local artists, a fireplace, and lush wood accents. Nicholas Cibel, the restaurant’s owner, stopped by our table as we ate. We invited him to sit and chat and he shared the story of the restaurant’s 18-month renovation and his background in the restaurant industry.
years ago and now the restaurant seems brand new again” said Nicholas. Faith, food and family have been the hallmarks of Nicholas Cibel’s life, and he is just getting started. Nicholas treated us to lunch and even threw in a Classic Root Beer Float for good measure. Jennifer and I enjoyed our wonderful meals and Nicholas’ dynamic company so much that we almost missed our show. Thank you Nicholas for a wonderful experience, a delicious meal and above all, for making us feel like we were a part of your restaurant family. Please accept our best wishes for your continued success.
It seems that Nicholas grew-up in the Washington, DC metro area and spent all of his life in the restaurant business. He got his first job, at the age of 17 in his father’s restaurant The Dancing Crab. When he was in his twenties, Cibel helped his father Anthony “Tony” Cibel and a family friend Joe Rinaldi (deceased) to launch and run Tony and Joe’s, their self-named seafood restaurant. Then in his thirties, Cibel and his cousin Gregory “Greg” Casten opened their own restaurant, which they called Nick’s Riverside Grill. “Greg and I bootstrapped it all the way. I remember that we were both still laying-on carpet in the restaurant the night before it opened. Those were rough times. It was also over twenty

A Fresh Start at Tyson’s Galleria As the destination for resort and travel wear, its only fitting that Lilly Pulitzer opens their doors to the jet setters of Washington DC. Lilly Pulitzer’s grand opening took place on February 9th in Tysons Galleria with the debut of the brand’s very popular white dress collection, door prizes, and giveaways. One of the enter to win prizes included an original painting from one of the brand’s in-house print designers and live painting demonstrations. The 2687 square foot store offers clothing for men, women, children and also sells jewelry and accessories. Lilly Pulitzer has something for everyone including a dressing room color story unique to the Tysons boutique complete with conversation hearts. The Lilly Pulitzer brand is known for its iconic colorful prints and its stylish laid-back silhouettes. The Lilly Pulitzer customer spans generations and the brand sells to everyone from infants to retirees. The line was started by Lilly Pulitzer in Palm Beach in the late 1950’s when Pulitzer had a cotton printed shift dress made to cover up the stains from her work with her juice stand. After her friend, Jackie Kennedy was seen wearing one of her dresses, the line grew into a luxury powerhouse. What sets the brand apart is that design and development is done entirely in-house in the corporate headquarters located in King Of Prussia, Pennsylvania. Print designers paint the signature prints by hand and it is very rare for a print to ever be repeated. Apparel designers in the product design team develop every aspect of a garment including the fabrics, and the embellishments. For Spring 2013, in addition to the signature pink and green printed dresses, Lilly Pulitzer will focus on three piece dressing including tailored jackets such as the Malibu blazer, flowy tops and cigarette pants. These pieces are seen as core travel outfits that can be worn in cold and warm weather climates. On trend offerings include the Marta dress and the Lacina dress. Suit Yourself Let’s talk suits, DC. I cannot count the number of times I have seen an unshapely, dated, downright boring suit. This is the uniform of our Nation’s Capital - a defining characteristic of this great city! Should we all vow to step up our game? Try a little harder to look more like Ryan Gosling, and a little less like Steve Carell pre-makeover in Crazy Stupid Love? Now I understand suiting is overwhelming and [gasp] expensive, but before you throw in the towel, let me introduce you to your new best friend: Indochino. In the last few years, Indochino has captured the attention of the manly masses and has grown at an incredible rate. Let’s start with the fact that it is custom suiting for men of all ages; suiting made for you and you alone. Model or not, as a former personal stylist, I assure you this is the way to go. Since the company is exclusively online and doesn’t offer traveling style consultants, you will need to provide your own measurements. Do not panic gentlemen, the steps are simple and explained in an easy to follow video, so let’s not pretend this is rocket science. If any additional alterations are needed, Indochino will pay up to $75 to tailor your suit locally. If you are still not satisfied, simply return the suit for a full refund. So far I am having a hard time seeing what there is to lose. As to my next reason why Indochino will be the new love of your life: the price. In no way does this mean you are skimping on quality, so throw that old notion out the window. These suits are crafted from Australian Merino Wool, which provides a lightweight, soft, and yes, expensive feel. By selling suits directly to you, Indochino has removed the middleman and can sell their product at more affordable prices. Shop the Essentials Collections and you can look great for as little as $379. Finally, long gone are the days where you had to shell out thousands of dollars for a blazer and pants. Apart from everything I have already mentioned, I was fortunate enough to meet with the Indochino team and the two masterminds behind the entire operation: Heikal Gani and Kyle Vucko. This team is incredibly passionate about what they do and what they provide. For them, it is all about the customer and creating a seamless, enjoyable experience. Looking great and feeling great is more accessible than you could have ever imagined, and it starts with a measuring tape and a vision. To all the women reading this - I believe it’s about time we too had a little arm candy; arm candy where if we squint just enough, we can see a vague resemblance to Mr. Gosling himself.

Hollywood
Makes A Stance To End
Gun Violence
By Cornelius Fletcher Photography by Chandler Macik
Since 2008 the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Pennsylvania Avenue has been pretty apparent. A-list stars have turned out in droves to support the Obama Administration. Although we are used to seeing them here for events like the White House Correspondence Dinner or the Inauguration Balls that popped up all over the city last month, stars gathered on Capitol Hill on February 6th to speak about a much more pressing issue, gun control laws, a topic that has captivated the country in the last month and a half in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy in Newtown, Ct. Chris Rock, Amanda Peet, Anna Deavere Smith, Tony Bennett and Adam Scott gathered on behalf of “Demand a plan to end gun violence” a campaign of Mayors against
56
Illegal Guns. Rep. Mike Thompson (DCa), the Chairman of the Gun-Violence task force and Mark Glaze, the Director of Mayors against Illegal Guns called upon this group, which also included Stephen Barton, a survivor of the Aurora shooting and Dr. Michael Nance Director of the Pediatric Trauma Program at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, to rally behind President Obama’s plan to reduce gun violence, including background checks for all gun sales and an assault weapons ban. The group supports criminal background checks for every gun sold in America, a ban on semiautomatic assault weapons, and limits on high-capacity ammunition magazines. The coalition would also make firearms’ trafficking, which is purchasing a gun for

the express purpose of delivering it to a prohibited person, a federal crime. The proposals are in line with what the White House recommended last month. “I’m a gun owner, I’m a hunter and I believe in the Second Amendment,” Thompson, said. “But I’m also a father and a grandfather, and I know we have to make our communities safer.” Mayors Against Illegal Guns is backed by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The organization produced a nearly 90-second ad in late December featuring dozens of A-listers calling for a plan against gun violence. While most were there to simply support President Obama. “The president and
the first lady are kind of like the mom and dad of the country,” comedian Chris Rock said. “And when your dad says something, you listen. And when you don’t it usually bites you in the ass.” Others were there remembering a safer America. “Were any of you safety patrol?” asked actress Anna Deavere Smith. “It amazes me that we have come so far from a time where schools were safe enough to have students patrol other students to now needing metal detectors in schools to keep our children safe” “I still haven’t gotten over Connecticut,” said a somber Tony Bennett in brief remarks. “I’d like the assault weapons to go to war, not in our own country. And I’d like assault weapons eliminated.” The group strongly backed support for
100 percent background checks. David Chipman a former special agent in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms spoke about his years of experience in dealing with crisis issues that ranged from the Oklahoma City bombings in 1995 to the first attack on the World Trade Centers in New York City as well as the attacks on September 11th. “When will we begin to equate the level of violence associated with people trying to blow up buildings with people who are trying to gun down our friends and family?” he asked the room. “In the city of Detroit there have been more lives lost by gun violence in the time since September the 11th than all of the lives lost on that tragic day. If I were to tell you that when you boarded an airplane, that only 60% of the passengers on board had been
checked while the other 40% had not been, you would think that was ridiculous in the weeks after 9/11, we have to do a better job of keeping these weapons out of the hands of people who don’t need them and that starts with 100% criminal background checks for anybody trying to obtain a gun.” The most poignant moment of the day came when the daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, Kerry Kennedy, was joined by Martin Luther King III, son of the famous civil rights leader. Robert Kennedy was assassinated while on the campaign trail in California during the summer of 1968 and just a few months earlier Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King was gunned down outside his motel room in Memphis. “Since my father’s assassination, we’ve
SPRING 2013 | DC LIFE Magazine
57
lost more than a million Americans to gun violence,” said Kennedy, “We’ve endured enough pain. Please, with our members of Congress, stop the violence.” Martin Luther King III started by quoting his father, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. It’s sad we had to lose 20 precious children in Newtown for us to have to talk about the issue, but we’re glad that it’s going to be addressed,” he said. The over arching theme of the day was the idea that this is not an issue about the 2nd Amendment but yet an issue about our safety as a country and how we can best regulate and end the illegal sale of firearms to the wrong people. The mood, although somber, posed a positive outlook on an issue that has long been kept quiet in this country. Many detractors will probably assume that this is just another attempt at A-list actors to attach their names to a cause in hopes of implementing their name as a humanitarian. This day seemed different however, more urgent, less glamorous. The names attached to this cause will make people pay attention, but their voices will hopefully make us act. “I think this is a critical moment in history” said actress Amanda Peet. “The issue of the role that Hollywood plays in America’s fascination with guns is one worth exploring, but I am willing to do whatever it takes and be in this cause for the long haul in order to see positive results in what is truly becoming an epidemic” It seems for now that Hollywood has set up shop inside the Beltway. Let’s all hope a happy ending is written into the script. Cornelius Fletcher is a 2010 graduate of Norfolk State University where he studied Political Science and minored In English. He currently resides in Washington DC where he attends Howard University and is completing work on his Masters degree in Public Policy.

On Holiday, Will Travel After almost a decade in the vacation home rental market, Tom Gilmore, CEO and founder of VacationHomeRentals.com, is sharing tips to prevent travelers fromavoiding rental scams. VacationHomeRentals.com is the family-to-family (F2F) vacation rental marketplace that connects families looking to rent vacation homes directly with homeowners and is the safest online vacation rental service. Tom has identified five tips to avoid rental scams: 1. Use Search Engines – If you’re worried about a property, simply check it out yourself. With tools like Google Maps or Bing’s “Bird’s Eye View”, it’s easy to find photos of a property and check out the neighborhood. You can also try to locate the registry of deeds for the county where the property is located and look up the address to double check that the person does indeed own the home they are advertising. 2. Don’t Send Money – Don’t pay by money transfer systems like Western Union, or wire money to someone’s bank account. Be sure to pay by credit card or PayPal, which enable you to dispute fraudulent charges. 3. Make Some Calls – Before you officially decide to book, give the owner or property manager a call and have a simple conversation with them. Be sure to ask them for references and contact those previous renters to make sure they were pleased with the property or check out reviews linked to Facebook, so a prospective renter is capable checking out reviews from a past renter. 4. Book Direct – To completely avoid scams, it’s best to shy away from Craigslist and check out properties from vacation home rental sites like VacationHomeRentals. com, which has over 50,000 reviews written by real guests. Also, the company’s Happy Rental Guarantee protects you for up to $10,000 if the home has been foreclosed or is in bankruptcy, if the owner double-books the property, or the property is misrepresented. 5. Suspicious Behavior – Take notice of bad grammar in emails, foreign phone numbers, or if the owner/property manager is not responding to emails. These can all be warning signs

American oriented cuisine to be prepared by a world class chef. In terms of style, Garrett and Azola say they are aiming for a “romantic” feel. Each room will be uniquely furnished with refurbished antiques and touches. the hotel will look like nothing Baltimore has ever seen before with the main goal being to highlight the antique and historical features of the structure. When it comes down
to it Garret and Azola really want guests to feel that they are at home and can put their feet up. However, the luxurious plans and furnishings are not the only details that make this hotel special. the Browns have really put a lot of emphasis on community involvement, reaching out to local artists and students who could contribute to the project. Students from Morgan State University and other schools will come in as interns in the school of architecture
and work with the developers to learn and refine their skills. other students will come in as part of a documentary group and work with various members of the hotel developing team. In addition, the team has taken the opportunity to pair up with organizations who work with disadvantaged youth and have given them the opportunity to come and help construct the hotel in order to learn and develop a craft. these youths will also be trained in the art of deconsruction using the green movement as all
of the materials coming out of the building will be recycled. the plans look amazing and the location is prime. there is also a lot of buzz and excitement over what the Ivy Hotel will do wonderful things for the community and city of Baltimore. We can’t wait to see the final product!

Currently In Rotation Tom McBride “Morning in Glen Burnie” to rustle up inspiration for his award-winning third album, Morning In Glen Burnie, tom McBride dug deep into his record collection. “I was trying to identify those songs that I loved as a child and still enjoy now,” he explains. “I looked backwards a little bit and dug deeper into some older folk, pop, and country songs by artists like Roy orbison, Buck owens, and George Jones. I was challenging myself to simplify my writing, to really dig into more traditional forms and melodies.” “Put really simply,” he sums up, “I just tried to write good songs.” With an eye on the classics, McBride wrote the songs that eventually became Morning in Glen Burnie, a modern album steeped in an old-school blend of Americana, blues, soul and pop/rock. Many of the songs were inspired by Nashville, the town where he launched his music career in the early 2000s. McBride recorded Morning in Glen Burnie closer to his hometown, though, setting up shop just outside of Boston. Another Beantown native, Kimon Kirk (Grant-Lee Phillips,
66

Aimee Mann), signed on as producer. “We recorded at Dimension Sound Studios with an excellent engineer, Dan Cardinal, and a band that included a full rhythm section, organ, and electric guitar,” McBride says. “Many of the tracks on the album are either the second or third attempt of the song. We’d go over the forms together in the mixing room, talk about the vibe of the song together, and then we’d go play it. Just painless, and a lot of fun.” the result is a breezy, classic-sounding record that splits the difference between all of McBride’s influences, from the country sway of the Mavericks to the crooning pop of Sam Cooke. It’s the sound of a singer/songwriter working with a well-oiled band. It’s already begun gathering its own buzz, too, with the Mid-Atlantic Songwriters Association awarding its prestigious gold prize to the album’s first track, “But I Don’t Care.” For more information on tom McBride visit: www.tommcbridemusic.com
