Will it dispirit IAS aspirants? The 28-year-old IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal, who took on the powerful sand mafia in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, was hurriedly suspended for demolishing the wall of a religious structure built on government land at Kadalpur village on July 27, 2013. But according to the reports submitted by the District Magistrate to the UP government, the young civil servant never demolished the wall of any religious structure. The hullabaloo still goes on‌However it demotivates the smarter brains who want to join the IAS by EI Bureau

t is alleged that Samajwadi Party leader Narendra Bhati, who has cabinet-minister rank, was frustrated by Durga Shakti Nagpal’s drive against illegal mining and was reportedly responsible for getting her abruptly suspended. Later, Bhati was recorded on video boasting of getting the officer suspended within 41 minutes. As the upheaval continues in the city, many higher officials and aspiring bureaucrats have questioned the harsh move of the Akhilesh Yadav Government in Uttar Pradesh. They feel that if IAS officers have to face terrific consequences for their honesty, India would never come out

of the clutches of corruption. There are many IAS aspirants who dream of serving the country by being in this prestigious post and the Durga issue is troubling them. When, the final results of Civil Services Examination, 2012, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) were announced, a total of 998 candidates qualified in the examination with the vision of serving their country. But, this issue has surely raised many doubts in these young IAS people. Recently, young IAS and IPS aspirants from Coimbatore declared the young official, Durga Shakti Nagpal, as their role model and lauded her for having stood up to the might of the sand mafia in Uttar Pradesh. Over 10 civil service aspirants expressed their support and solidarity to Durga. A demonstration held near Red Cross in the same city was moderate, but the presence of the IAS aspirants among them reflected their sentiments over the issue. Almost all of them were of the opinion that the political pressure exerted on government officials is not something new and that a new IAS officer would definitely anticipate it and act accordingly. Apart from quoting media reports on how Durga was exonerated by the District Magistrate on charges of demolishing the wall surrounding a mosque, reports said that there
was no communal tension or the possibility of a disturbance in law and order – the very grounds on which the government suspended Durga. Urging Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav “to ensure that justice prevails,” the Central IPS Association said the state government’s decision to reinstate Durga would go a long way in restoring confidence among the officers in the administration that “sincerity, dedication and an impartial work ethic” are assets while discharging their duties.
What they say “Such incidents of young bureaucrats being harassed for carrying out their duties without complying with the demands and whims of politicians will not have a negative impact on those aspiring to get into civil services. I believe that Durga is a good officer and I feel that such immediate action should not have been taken. IAS aspirants should always keep in mind that IAS is not a bed of roses, that there are many responsibilities connected with this service, that there will be pressures on you and sometimes there will be hurdles. It’s with a lot of hard work and passion that a person is able to serve in this post. We should be sincere to our profession and serve the country as best as we can.” - Alby John Varghese, IAS “As Durga Shakthi Nagpal is a young officer who got suspended, the public became aware of it so fast. This is not an ideal issue, and there are many such issues that have not come to the limelight. This job is entrusted with full of responsibilities. The government has done its job and Utter Pradesh is a state which functions in a particular manner. So, I don’t think that the IAS aspirants should lose hope in fulfilling their dreams. Go ahead and serve the country!” - Abdul Rahman, IAS “I don’t think this issue in any way will discourage the IAS aspirants as they must know that in every job there will be positives and negatives and to be an IAS officer is very challenging. An IAS officer is a crises manager. We have great responsibilities entrusted to us. This job is not an easy task. At times, you will come across difficult situations. So an IAS officer should overcome all the hurdles and be sincere to his duty. As a young officer, Durga Shakthi Nagpal has to go a long way, and I truly feel that she will come out of this issue.” - Neethu Rahman, IAS “I don’t think this issue can hinder the dreams and passion of IAS aspirants. If Durga has done justice to her profession, then surely she will be rewarded for that. Instead of being discouraged by this issue, the IAS aspirants should take it as a challenge to serve their country.” - Satish Nambudiripad, IFS
“I am very happy that we have such an officer who can take a stand against the powerful sand mining mafia. Durga has shown actual courage and it will inspire the next generation to take up this prestigious profession. And we need such heroes in our society to make it a better one.” - Govind Jaiswal, IAS
“Though the incident is discouraging for aspiring IAS officers, it has exposed the politicians. However sincere the officers are, there will always be politicians who command them.” - Shani K, an IAS aspirant from Kasargod
