ust off your shades because summer is just around the corner. Hallelujah! I’m so over winter jackets and sniffy noses. As the warmer nights draw in, we’ve got a host of exciting travel ideas for you and the family to enjoy. No matter if you’re jetting off into the sunshine alone or with the kids, looking for a city break or a staycation in Scotland, our travel guide has something for everyone this spring/summer season. Discover the joys of the River Mersey in Liverpool, indulge at Crieff Hydro or hit up Europe this Easter. A well-deserved break can be heaven sent for some. Hate to break it to you, but we spend most of our lives in work, and some are spending even longer clocking ARE YOU FOLLOWING US? in the hours. Two people share their work-life balance and debate working past five or living it up on flexiFamilyLifeScot time. One interview I didn’t mind staying late for: John FamilyLifeScot Barrowman. Yes, the man, the myth, the FABULOUS legend took time out of his busy schedule to chat FamilyLifeScot about his upcoming tour, coming home to Scotland and what it means to be fabulous (read in dramatic John Barrowman voice). Don’t miss this and so much more. GOOD-FOR-YOU DESSERTS It’s hard to believe a dessert could be tasty and good for you. Enter nice cream (banana-based ice cream that could make you believe it’s full fat), sweet hummus (chocolate is our favourite flavour) and coconut based everything. Sin free indulging.
Fitness COUCH TO 5K A nine-week programme that takes you from couch potato to 5K runner sounds like a lie, but trust us, it works. We’ve been trying out the Couch to 5K app for the last few months and will be bikini ready in no time. Each week you complete three runs, slowly building up to a full 5K in week nine. See you on the starting line (findarace.com/5k-runs/ scotland). WALKING On the school run, meeting up with friends or on your lunch break: walking is the perfect way to keep fit this spring. It is a simple, free and easy way to keep fit that doesn’t require a big commitment like a gym membership. As little as 10 minutes walking a day can improve your mental and physical health.

MOTHERFATHERSON We can’t get enough of Richard Gere and Helen McCrory in BBC2’s new drama MotherFatherSon. The show follows Max, a charming media mogul, his ex-wife and their troubled son, Caden. The show is set in the run up to a general election and draws parallels with today’s real-life political climate. We’ve been hooked since week one.
Must-see V&A Situated on Dundee’s waterfront, the V&A museum is not to be missed. See some of designer Christian Dior’s earliest work, learn about postwar design or just pop by the Garden Cafe for a cuppa. The best part is admission is free. SNOW ROADS After you’ve left the V&A head for Scotland’s Snow Roads, the one-day alternative to the North Coast 500. Drive through 90 miles of the Cairngorms National Park past villages, art installations and amazing views. Tag us in your Insta pics. PINK GIN Pink gin is like classic gin with a twist: it’s flavoured with pink fruit like strawberries or raspberries and is perfect for beer garden weather. The first records of pink gin date back to the 19th century, so it’s basically a delicious piece of history best served with tonic, ice and a slice of lemon.
KILLING EVE SEASON TWO It’s almost time for Killing Eve season two. We already know that Villanelle has survived the stabbing we saw at the end of season one, but there’s still so many questions. Who else is after Villanelle? Will her and Eve ever be together? Will there be a season three? One thing is for sure: there will be drama, lots of it.

Getting
Fabulous WITH JOHN BARROWMAN
Growing up in Glasgow to being fabulous in the Australian jungle, John Barrowman has achieved a lot in his lifetime. Now, the star is preparing to get back on stage for his upcoming tour, Fabulous. Lorne Gillies sat down with John to learn all about his star studded thrity year career
I
“
didn’t realise ‘fabulous’ had become a catchphrase until I came out [of the jungle],” laughs John Barrowman. The actor, singer, and all-round performer has been a popular figure for over thirty years. Oozing with charisma, humour and showbiz glamour, it’s no surprise he is a much-loved personality. However, it was his performance in the I’m A Celebrity… jungle that propelled John’s star to new heights. Coming third to Emily Atack and Harry Redknapp, John’s performance began during his introduction tape. You know the one, with the hilarious: “It’s going to be FABULOUS,” phrase dutifully picked up by hosts Holly Willoughby and Declan Donnelly. Naturally, it was only a matter of time before John saw an opportunity to bring the laughter to a live audience.
TOURING
John enthuses: “We decided to match those two together: John Barrowman and fabulous. The show itself will have insights into my life, career, my family, friends. There will be photographs and videos all structured together around music, it will be similar to ‘an evening with John Barrowman,’ but it won’t be a dull evening; it will be a fabulous evening.” The excitement is building for the tour, with many dates selling out. As a performer, how does that feel? “It makes me feel amazing; it makes me
8
feel FABULOUS!” exclaims John in the iconic I’m A Celebrity… fashion. For people who have missed out on the chance for tickets, all is not lost. “We are also – I’m probably going to get into trouble for saying this – talking about doing another section of the tour later on in the year,” continues John enthusiastically. Performing 12 nights across the UK, it is coming home to Scotland that John is really excited about.
SCOTLAND
“I love coming up to Scotland and people know that even though I don’t live in Scotland, my heart is in Scotland,” says John fondly. Through a broad Scottish accent, John’s adoration for Scotland is evident. Having been born in Glasgow to parents John and Marion, when John was eight his family, alongside his older brother and sister moved to Illinois. Even with the relocation, Scotland has had a strong impact. John says: “That’s my homeland. What I love the most about Scottish audiences is that they get my humour, they’re non-judgemental, and the warmest and funniest of audiences that you can come across. At the end they’re always ready for a sing along.” And an important factor to being Scottish is a strong relationship with family. A trait that John has ensured to intertwine into his life. “My mum and
dad are my biggest fans – they always have been. My brother and sister have always been on my side, Scott has always been supportive,” adds John. “Family has always been important to me and I always go back to that being Scottish.”
ENTERTAINER
Kicking off his tour in Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall (18 June), before heading to the capital (19 June), the show – as John explains – will feature the highlights from his life. Stories, songs, anecdotes and images from a 30 year strong career: there’s no business like showbusiness for John. From singing alongside Elaine Page in the musical Anything Goes, performing in many West End productions, his mesmerising and cult performance of Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who and spinoff Torchwood, to his bright, bubbly, heart-warming performance in the jungle – there’s no denying John’s talent. But, how does he feel he’s progressed as an entertainer? “I like to think I’ve gotten better over the years,” he laughs. “I like to also think that people are also enjoying what I do. “It’s hard to say for me how I have grown as an entertainer or performer, that’s a social media question to let other people answer. I would be interested to hear what others have

to say,” John says earnestly. “That’s the beauty of what I do: somebody gets something different from it; each individual takes something entirely different and that’s what’s great about being an entertainer and a performer.” And many new fans will know John from his most recent performance.
IN THE OUT BACK

“I loved doing it,” emphasises John about his three-week stint in the I’m A Celebrity… jungle. “Truthfully, it was hard, exhausting, challenging, you’re lying next to people all the time, you’re snapping, you are exposed. For people to say you’re going in there and playing a game, behaving unlike you usually do: I challenge them to go in there and do it,” continues John. “When I came out [of the jungle] I said I would never do it again. The more I’ve been away from it, the more I’ve said if they did an All Star version I would go back and do it.” A true team player, John entertained everyone on screen and in camp. He was a trooper, too, returning to the jungle after spraining his ankle only to go on and power through eating challenges and building a friendship with each member of camp. No more so than actress Emily Atack. The chemistry between the pair was palpable and their natural connection was clear. So, it is no surprise the offers for the pair to work together are flooding in. “I want to do something together that has longevity. We want to be particular with what we choose as we want it to reflect our fun, personality and our friendship,” explains John. Although nothing is set in stone, whatever the duo do in the future is sure to be hilarious. For now, as John jets back to Palm Springs, we’re off to get fabulous for a night of frolics and fun with Mr John Barrowman.

TRAVEL
STRESS FREE
s
e es a e
Summer is almost within reach and we’ve started planning our escapes to the sun already. The family summer holiday can be the highlight of the year, but the planning can feel like more stress than it’s worth. We’re here to get you organised
SAVE YOUR DOLLA
Getting a good deal when you book can mean the difference between spending your holiday at ease or on a budget. And we all know what option is best! Booking your flights and hotel together through sites like Expedia (www.expedia.co.uk) often gives you a better price than booking them separately. For the best deals sign up to different airlines’ mailing lists to be notified about flight sales and offers. Putting a little bit of money aside every month can make things less daunting when it comes to booking a summer escape with the family. We recommend opening a savings account dedicated to your holiday fund and setting up a standing order for payday.
PACKAGE DEAL
A package holiday can save you time and money when you’re booking your summer trip away. Going all-inclusive means you don’t have to worry about extra money for meals while you’re there and there’s always child-friendly food included. Your local travel agent can do all of the heavy lifting when it comes to your holiday. Simply tell them your budget and requirements, where you would like to go and for how long. They’ll do all the investigating and leg work for you –
DOCUMENTATION
In the excitement of planning what you’ll do and the stress of remembering to pack everything you need (remember the sun cream), it’s easy to forget about the more important aspects of a holiday. Always check the passports are in date before booking a holiday. Make sure they are valid for six months after your departure date to play it safe and avoid trouble at the airport.
added bonus. If, like us, you always need more hours in the day, it can be faster to book your package holiday online. Tried and tested companies like Thomas Cook (www. thomascook.com) or TUI (www.tui.co.uk) are popular for booking an all-inclusive holiday. Affordability is key, budget airlines Jet2 (www.jet2holidays.com) and EasyJet (www.easyjet.com) have joined the package holiday market. Rejoyce!
If you are travelling outside of Europe you might need a Visa or other documentation. Currently 33 countries around the world require UK citizens to have a Visa to enter. To apply you will have to visit an individual country’s embassy website. Visas have to be approved in advance so make sure you do this long before you head for the airport. www.familylifemagazine.co.uk

TRAVEL
SAFETY FIRST
Travel insurance is the simplest way to ensure you’re staying safe abroad. It is fairly inexpensive depending on your situation and can be bought online, over the phone or even at your local Post Office. It covers your trip as well as you. Trip cancellation, interruption, delays, lost baggage and medical coverage are usually included under this one umbrella. You can even get family travel insurance that covers you all under one policy. Sites like Compare the Market (www.comparethemarket.com) and
MoneySuperMarket (www.moneysupermarket.com) let you compare travel insurance from different providers. Choosing a family-friendly resort will leave you assured that where you’re going is safe for the kids. You can choose this with the click of a button when booking, just filter your search. The family-friendly stamp usually means a resort provides children’s activities right through to child care for when you need some time alone to relax.
THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT Flights can mean boredom, jet lag and moody children. Travelling with the kids should be entertaining and exciting, but often it is more stressful. If you are travelling with young children, booking a night-time flight can help you keep to your usual routine. Lowered cabin lights at night, getting the kids into their pyjamas and having them brush their teeth like they do at home can all make a new environment seem less strange at bed time. Many parents swear by the mystery bag for keeping the kids entertained on flights. A sort of lucky dip, the idea is to fill a bag with toys, games and activities that 12
your child has never seen before. Every hour they are allowed to pick one item and then you can spend the next hour doing the activity with them. It will be fun for you both in the long run. Babies are infamous for choosing the most inconvenient times to fill a nappy or spit up: that includes flights. Preparing nappy packs for your flight avoids rooting around for nappies and baby wipes when there’s a disaster. Put a nappy and a few baby wipes into a nappy bag and tie the top so you can easily grab everything you need without hassle. Create around 10 so you’re covered for your whole flight.
Beach ready
The body positivity movement means getting beach ready carries a completely different meaning than it used to. To be body positive means you’re comfortable in your own skin. This can be hard to achieve, but striving to be and look like someone you’re not is not the best way to feel body confident. Ditch the diet teas and scales and do what makes you feel good. Whether that means hitting the gym, eating a little healthier or not changing anything at all, it is important to feel comfortable in your own skin before hitting the beach with a cocktail in hand.

Liverpool FAMILY CULTURE IN
It’s time to ferry across the Mersey with a trip to the city of culture, music and family entertainment: Liverpool. There’s more to the metropolitan city than the Fab Four and Cilla Black
U
nder four hours away by car or train lies a city showered in history. Dazzling performers to world renowned museums and eateries, Liverpool is certain to put a smile on everyone’s face. ACCOMMODATION There are a plethora of hotels and apartments to book for a family visit. Prices for the Holiday Inn Express at the Albert Dock start from £70. Or go central with The Liner Hotel (from £39 for family cruise package) based in a classic cruise ship – that’ll get some brownie points with the kids. Situated next to Liverpool Lime Street Station, in the heart of the city you will be a hop, skip and jump away from all the main attractions. IN THE CAVERN Once a European City of Culture, Liverpool is filled with the largest collection of museums and galleries anywhere outside of London. From a walk around the iconic Albert Dock (make sure to snap a photo with a statue of the Fab Four), a visit to the Merseyside Maritime Museum is a must. Free to enter, submerge into the seafaring history of Liverpool with exhibitions, free events – ideal for the kids – and trails throughout the museum, the history of the water will come to life. You can’t visit Liverpool without releasing your inner Beatle, or finding some hidden talent in the family, with a trip to The Cavern Club. Known as the iconic venue where John, Paul, George and Ringo performed; for a small entry donation it won’t be long before you’re walking in a room filled wall to wall with memorabilia, live music and gift shop. The Cavern Club is open to families and children under 18 during the day. Get the kids interested in musical legends early – you never know, you might bump into someone famous.
14
ON THE MERSEY Liverpool is comprised of several neighbourhoods. From the bustling night-time scene of the Baltic Triangle, bursting with food stalls and funky bars, to the quaint, idyllic weekend stalls and picturesque churches of the Georgian Quarter: each corner of Liverpool is sure to impress. Outside of the city, grab fish and chips by the sea after walking along Southport Pier. The Grade II listed pier is over 1,000 meters long, so the fish and chips will be a great reward. As a designated World Heritage Site, the Liverpool waterfront is one unlike any other. Hop onto the Mersey Ferry Cruise for a 50-minute journey of both sides of the river in a colourful boat – perfect for family photo ops – you’ll even get free entry into the U-boat Story and Woodside Ferry Terminal. So, what are you waiting for. Make sure you have a ticket to ride.

Fun in the Sun
TRAVEL

For a romantic weekend away, Rome is top of the list. Stroll down the cobbled streets of the Italian capital, and explore everything Rome has to offer (flights start at £80 with Ryanair). Make a wish at the Trevi Fountain, soak up some history at the Colosseum, and pay a visit to the Vatican City for a glimpse of the Pope. Of course, no trip to Italy is complete without pizza for lunch and pasta for tea every night. Sure, you can do that at home, but it’s much more fun doing it on holiday. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but you’ll have fallen in love with it after just a weekend away.
Great for a romantic weekend away with your partner, or a solo trip, these destinations will ensure you get your fix of sun, sightseeing and stress-free travel. Pack your bags because there’s some TLC waiting at the airport

Fly to the sunny Balearic Islands for just £41 return from Prestwick Airport with Ryanair. Mallorca has over 200 beaches to choose from, so there’s nowhere better to head if you want a relaxing beach trip, or to try your hand at watersports. Kayak, paddleboard and windsurf along the bright blue waves, without the fear of falling into freezing cold water. Then take advantage of the natural surroundings away from the water and go hillwalking, or if you want a real thrill, try your hand at rock climbing. If adventure’s not your style, take a romantic boat trip and watch the sun set, or relax on a beach chair with a piña colada in one hand, and a book in the other.

For a longer venture abroad, why not head to Portugal’s sunny capital, Lisbon? You can fly there for just £82 from Edinburgh with Ryanair. Take a ride on the iconic trams to get an authentic view of the city. Catch the number 28 for the most famous and scenic route though the city. We’d recommend getting on at Campo Ourique, for a shorter queue and better chance of getting a seat. Climb up to Castelo de Sao Jorge for breath-taking views of the city, or wander through the winding streets to admire the street art. Spend the evening in a café while you try Lisbon’s pride and joy: pastéis de nata, or custard tarts to us.

Rhubarb and ricotta bread and butter pudding This indulgent bread and butter pudding is full of sticky sweet rhubarb and rich ricotta, made for sharing with the whole family SERVES 8 400g rhubarb 150g golden caster sugar 300ml whole milk 300ml double cream ½ tsp vanilla extract 3 large eggs plus 1 egg yolk 250g bread (soft white
rolls, sliced bread or brioche) 35g butter 200g ricotta 25g icing sugar plus extra for dusting 1 lemon zested 1 orange zested Mackie’s Ice Cream
Preheat oven to 180ºC/160ºC fan/gas 1. Trim and cut your rhubarb into three cm pieces. Heat 100ml of cold water in a pan with 50g of golden caster sugar. Once you have brought this to the boil add your rhubarb to the pan and simmer for one and a half minutes. Carefully remove the rhubarb from the pan with a slotted spoon and place it on a plate or tray avoiding touching with other rhubarb pieces. 2. Next add your milk and cream to a pan with a pinch of salt and bring this to the boil. Once boiling add the vanilla extract and stir. 3. Meanwhile in a large bowl beat the eggs and extra yolk and the rest of the golden caster sugar together. Pour the warm milk and cream mixture into this and stir mixture together. 4. Butter your bread and drain the ricotta cheese of any moisture. Add the cheese to the icing sugar in a bowl and mix together. Then spread the buttered bread thickly with the ricotta and icing sugar mix. You can sprinkle the citrus zest on top of this afterwards and layer the slices with the rhubarb in an ovenproof dish. 5. Pour the egg and cream mixture through a sieve onto the bread in the ovenproof dish and leave this to sit on the side for 30 minutes. 6. Finally place the ovenproof dish with the entire mixture into a roasting tin and add enough water to the roasting tin (surrounding the ovenproof dish) to come halfway up the sides of the dish. Bake for 40 – 45 mins or until puffy, set and golden in colour. Leave this to cool for 10 minutes and serve with a generous scoop of Mackie’s ice cream.

Oaty sticky toffee pudding Who doesn’t love sticky toffee pudding? Some might argue it is the greatest dessert out there. Well, this oaty version from food and lifestyle blogger, Scottish Mum adds an extra twist to a family favourite FOR THE PUDDING 200g Medjool dates, stones removed 100g self-raising flour 100g Hamlyns Scottish Oatmeal 150ml boiling water 2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda 2 eggs
100g butter 2 tablespoons black treacle 150g demerara sugar 100ml double cream FOR THE TOFFEE SAUCE 350g golden caster sugar 100g butter, cubed 500ml double cream 1 tablespoon black treacle
Preheat oven to 170ºC/160ºC fan/gas mark 4 For the pudding 1. Chop the dates finely and place into a bowl and steep in boiling water. Place to one side whilst you work on the rest of the mixture. 2. In a mixing bowl, add all the dry pudding ingredients together and stir. Melt the butter and add along with the eggs and treacle. Mix by hand, or use a low setting on a mixer. 3. When the mix looks slightly curdled, add the double cream and fold by hand. It should resemble batter mix at this stage, remember it isn’t a cake mix and doesn’t need lots of air added. 4. Mash the now softened dates into the water and add to the other mixture. Again, fold in by hand, it may look curdled, but it’s fine. 5. Grease your baking tins and pour the mixture in. 6. Bake for 25 – 30 mins, until the pudding is cooked.
Leave to cool slightly. For the toffee sauce 1. In a thick bottomed pan, add the sugar and butter with around 3/4 of the cream, then slowly bring to the boil, stirring constantly. 2. When the sugar has dissolved, add the treacle and bring to the boil, letting it bubble for a minute. 3. Remove from the heat and beat in the remaining cream. Your mix will be a gorgeous toffee colour, and look lovely and glossy. Combining the dish 1. Using a knife or spatula, slide the cakes out of the tins. Don’t worry if it doesn’t look perfect, the toffee sauce is going on top and will hide any imperfections! 2. Pour a little toffee sauce into your tins, replace your pudding and drizzle more sauce on top. Reserve around a third of the sauce for serving

M WORD Women worldwide are experiencing the last taboo in silence and confusion: the menopause. A guaranteed change in any woman’s life, it’s time to discuss menopause openly to promote understanding and celebrate a new chapter you. If you don’t understand what’s happening then turning a blind eye is not helpful,” she continues. A natural part of ageing, the menopause can occur between 45 and 55 years of age, as a woman’s oestrogen levels decline. With a decrease in oestrogen, getting additional hormones is vital for health.
OPEN
Hormone replacement therapy (known commonly as HRT) is one of the main treatments for women with symptoms that can interfere with daily life. “The most important hormone for women is oestrogen. Importantly, when levels reduce we have an increase in heart disease, osteoporosis and dementia, very important conditions,” explains Louise. “We know that having the right HRT can reduce future risk of all these symptoms. A lot of women say their symptoms won’t last for long, but then they’re putting themselves at risk of osteoporosis, which affects one in two menopausal women. It is really important to look at the bigger picture of what menopause can do.” From night sweats, hot flushes, to low mood and anxiety, symptoms of menopause can, at times, be misdiagnosed. This is due to a lack of conversation around menopause and how symptoms affect women. Louise continues: “Around 70 per cent of women are wrongly being offered anti-depressants, and often say they know they’re not depressed but they feel really low and really flat. Then, going to their doctor – who may not always be in tune with the
“Education from all angles is lacking. Even in school,” explains Dr Louise Newson, a renowned GP and menopause expert. “I have teenage children and they just get told that the menopause is when their periods stop, which would be lovely if that was actually what happened. Young people get a lot of sex education, which is really important, but there is nothing about menopause.” The menopause is different for every woman, there is no one size fits all. For this reason, education is imperative so women can get the necessary assistance that will work for their body. “It needs to be taught in schools so that everyone knows about it, so boys and men know about it,” agrees Andrea McLean. Well known for her appearances on the award-winning ITV show, Loose Women, Andrea has been open about her menopause journey after announcing her hysterectomy live on the show in 2016. “For men who think it is a woman’s problem and it doesn’t impact them, men will have wives, sisters, colleagues: they are surrounded by women, so the menopause has everything to do with 24

ust like having a period, the menopause is a natural part of being a woman. However, there remains a distinct lack of education and support for women who are experiencing symptoms of the menopause. One reason women are potentially not receiving the guidance and medication necessary is due to misinformation.
Menopause is just one experience women will have together, you can’t let it define you

HEALTH
menopause – they’re just thinking about their mood and being mislabelled, or even being signed off their work with depression, when they haven’t got depression.” Increased anxiety levels and feelings of depression can be a common symptom. Andrea, who has lived with anxiety throughout her life, saw that her anxiety levels increased when she experienced medical induced menopause after her hysterectomy. Similarly, Andrea explains that she became irritable and snappy, which is completely opposite to her naturally bubbly personality. But, with the help of HRT both Louise, Andrea and millions of women worldwide are living out life more comfortably. Louise emphasises: “The most important thing is to get the right information, and not to be scared. If you get your menopause managed properly it can be really beneficial for the rest of your life. Also, the NICE guidelines are very clear that the benefits of HRT do outweigh the negatives for the majority of women.”
ME.NO.PAUSE
Managing your hormones is just half the battle. Diminishing menopause as the last taboo is important for women, and men, of all ages. With public figures such as Louise and Andrea speaking honestly about their personal experiences and providing medical advice, more women like yourself or a loved one can have a healthy menopause. “The menopause is going to happen to half the population of the entire planet, if you are lucky enough to live that long. Yet, we don’t talk about it – that’s completely bonkers,” exclaims Andrea. “The menopause happens to women regardless if you’re single, married, gay, straight, religious, not religious; it doesn’t make any difference.” That’s is why Andrea is now an ambassador for Holland and Barrett’s Me.No.Pause campaign, working to break the silence on menopause. Encouraging discussions, spreading awareness and promoting education will help women feel empowered with the
menopause, instead of cowering away. “Menopause is just one experience women will have together, you can’t let it define you. Don’t hide away or be shy about it. You need to get the advice, support you deserve,” encourages Andrea passionately. And Louise agrees. “It has turned into such a negative aspect of our lives, which is wrong. It shouldn’t be.” With more work and awareness, we can banish the last taboo. Louise is determined to ensure women are not ignored. Set to release a new series of podcasts, Louise will be discussing life with the menopause, benefits of HRT and getting the right dose for you, plus much more to help women throughout their menopause journey. Before long, we will all be talking about the M word confidently with hushed whispers a distant memory. Dr Louise Newson can provide more information and advice on her website (www.menopausedoctor.co.uk) or visit your local GP (www.nhs.uk).

INVESTING IN YOUR
Child’s education Choosing the right school for your child sets them up to achieve greatness in life. Wellington School, an independent school in Ayr, helps students to become considerate, motivated and reach their goals
S
ending your child to an independent school provides them with enriched academic opportunities for their future.
INVESTMENT Independent schools are free to make decisions tailored to each individual’s talents and needs, ensuring your child gets the best educational experience possible. Wellington School is no different, Deputy Head Clare Smith explains: “Quite simply, it’s an investment in your child’s future. We are able to offer small class sizes, individually tailored support and, most importantly, the perfect environment in which to be academically stretched and challenged.” With just over 500 pupils from nursery through to the senior school, smaller classes help pupils to develop their skills and feel confident while learning. ATMOSPHERE Thoughtful students and a refreshing location mean Wellington’s people, ethos and surroundings set it apart from other independent schools. “There is a very welcoming, happy and respectful atmosphere,” explains Clare.
“There are no other schools I can think of where you can sit in a Higher English class and look out over the sea to Arran for folio inspiration.” The learning culture at Wellington instils a strong work ethic and a sense of achievement in pupils, Clare adds: “Parents can expect that their child will be nurtured by staff who know them well, challenged academically by experienced, dynamic teachers and encouraged to find out about themselves by trying a range of subjects, clubs and extra-curricular activities.” CREATIVITY Along with great opportunities in STEM subjects, this standard of learning stretches further than the classroom. “We recognise that access to a wide variety of experiences allows pupils to develop themselves,” emphasises Clare. “We believe that lessons learned on the sports field such as perseverance and the importance of teamwork can transfer in to the classroom,” she continues. From the strong languages department building talented linguists to the music department inspiring students for a future in musical theatre, there is something for every child at Wellington School.
OPEN DAYS
Open days at Wellington School take place in the Autumn, but visitors are welcome to make an appointment at any time during the year for a tour led by S6 pupils. “Time and again, visitors comment on the mature, friendly and enthusiastic students who show them around,” explains Clare. Prospective pupils can spend a day as a student to find out what it feels like to attend the school. There is never a shortage of exciting things happening in the classroom. “If you visit the science department, you can expect to be involved in an experiment or two and if you visit a junior school class, you will be struck by the number of happy faces,” promises Clare. “Our pupils are, undoubtedly, our best marketing resource.” To arrange an appointment call 01292 269 321.
Parents can expect that their child will be nurtured by staff who know them well For more information on what Wellington School has to offer visit www.wellingtonschool.org www.familylifemagazine.co.uk

TALKING ABOUT
DIVORCE
Experiencing a divorce is challenging for all members of the family. Specialist support and guidance from the right solicitor, can help you resolve conflict, mediate and come to an agreement on the care arrangements for your kids during divorce
Children will adjust better if their parents communicate with one another and with them
D
ivorce and separation are an emotional process for everyone, it can become more difficult when children are involved. That is why specialist legal advice is imperative. Judith Higson, Associate Director of Scullion LAW explains: “A client could come in with both financial issues and care arrangements for children to be resolved, it’s common to have both running side by side.” During divorce proceedings a solicitor can help to resolve conflict, communicate your wishes to your ex partners solicitor, advise you on the law and ultimately help you reach a fair settlement. TIME In Scotland, you can seek a divorce one year after separation with the consent of your partner. If they do not consent this time period rises to two years. It is possible to seek a divorce within the first year of separation if there are fault grounds for divorce, this includes things like adultery or other unreasonable behaviour. “Fault based grounds result in the other person being blamed for the breakdown of the marriage,” explains Judith. “If people don’t agree with the unreasonable behaviour set out in the court proceedings, they can defend the proceedings and the cost increases quickly.” The time it takes to reach a settlement is unique to each case, which is why advice from a solicitor is important. Judith recommends: “Valuing all of your assets and liabilities at the date of your separation builds a picture of what there is
to be divided and each party disclosing the value of assets and liabilities they each have is a sensible way of reaching a settlement. Once that has been achieved the divorce itself is simply a paperwork exercise.” CARE AGREEMENT As part of reaching a settlement, it is often important to find a way to communicate what will benefit your children once your divorce is finalised. Judith recommends keeping a book you can both use detailing how the kids were during each respective visit, and any issues your former partner should know about. “It allows people to communicate indirectly if a couple cannot communicate in a face to face way,” she continues. Your solicitor can also monitor emails or advise, guide and support you in meetings. It is important to discuss issues like where your child will live then explain this to your child together, Judith explains: “Children will adjust better if their parents communicate with one another and with them, putting their own differences aside to focus on what is best for the kids. We can support and give guidance on what to say and how to say it.” Along with helping to resolve conflicts which arise during the separation and divorce process, Scullion LAW can help you to focus on what is best for your children during and after separation and divorce – which is what all parents want, in the long run. Contact Scullion LAW (Hamilton, Glasgow Saltmarket and West End) on 0141 374 2121 or visit www.scullionlaw.com for more information. www.familylifemagazine.co.uk

According to the World Health Organisation, vaccine hesitancy is one of the top ten threats to global health in 2019. Vaccines save over two million lives every year, so why are Scotland’s vaccination rates declining? Saskia Harper investigates
THE IMMUNISATION
DEBATE S
cotland has consistently high rates of vaccination, meeting the target of 95 per cent uptake year after year. However, in 2018, the vaccination rate was 95.3 per cent: a sharp fall from 97.4 per cent in 2012. The debate surrounding whether or not to vaccinate has been discussed since vaccinations came into effect. However, it has picked up traction over recent years, which could be one of the factors accounting for the falling rates of vaccination.
WHAT IS A VACCINE? A vaccine is a type of medication that is used to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, such as measles, polio and flu. A small, harmless amount of the virus is injected into the body. This causes 36
you to produce antibodies, which fight off the disease. If the virus from the real disease attacks, being vaccinated means you already have the antibodies to fight it off, and usually don’t get sick. In effect, you are immune from catching the disease. When the majority of people are vaccinated, it protects the people in the community who aren’t vaccinated, as there is no way for the disease to reach them. This is known as herd immunity, and is why targets of 95 per cent vaccine uptake are in place. Some people cannot get vaccinated, for example, those who are allergic to vaccine ingredients, or children who have had chemotherapy, as their immune system has been compromised. The more people that are vaccinated,
the safer individuals who cannot be vaccinated are.
AUTISM
One of the biggest obstacles preventing more vaccinations from taking place is the idea that vaccines cause autism. In 1998, a doctor, Andrew Wakefield, published research that demonstrated a link between autism and the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. This caused a huge decline in the number of vaccinations in the immediate aftermath. Since Wakefield published his research, his paper has been discredited, he has been struck off as a doctor, and researchers around the world have spent millions of pounds undertaking analysis. Research carried out in 2019 on over 650,000 children

HEALTH revealed the MMR vaccine does not cause autism, or any other spectrum disorder.
CONTENTS
Vaccination contents have caused concern amongst parents with worries on the impact ingredients may have on their child. Some ingredients are used as adjuvants: meaning they help the body recognise the vaccine better and create a more efficient immune response. Aluminium is one of these ingredients, however, in the UK, the highest dose of aluminium babies receive in one go is under 1.5 milligrams – roughly the same amount present in a litre of baby formula. Others are used as stabilisers, to help preserve the vaccine, including gelatine and thiomersal (mercury). It’s cheaper for the NHS to produce the vaccines if they include stabilisers, as they last longer. However, if you’re willing to pay, you can request a gelatine-free vaccine. Thiomersal is no longer used in any UK routine vaccines, meaning all routine vaccines are mercury-free. Some ingredients may sound scary, but are actually very safe. Formaldehyde is a chemical used in the production of some vaccines, to kill toxins and bacteria from the virus. It’s then diluted out of the vaccine, but trace amounts may remain. Humans produce about 1.5 ounces of formaldehyde every day, as a natural part of metabolism: much more than is found in a vaccine. It’s also important to note that vaccines don’t contain anti-freeze. A chemical called ethylene glycol can be found in anti-freeze, which has caused confusion, as polyethylene glycol is the ingredient found in vaccines. Polyethylene glycol can also be found in laxatives, toothpaste, skin cream and personal lubricants.
HEALTH
Research carried out in 2019 on over 650,000 children revealed the MMR vaccine does not cause autism
It cannot be denied that, like all medicines, there can be side effects to vaccines, and chances they may not be able to completely protect you from diseases. However, it’s clear that vaccinating is the safest, most effective way to protect yourself, and those around you, from these harmful diseases. And, no matter which side of the debate you find yourself on, we all have one thing in common: we all want our children to be happy, healthy and safe.
OVER TO YOU
There’s currently a huge public debate ongoing about vaccinations. We spoke to one parent, to learn about their experience with vaccinations
FOR
Tina Bailey “My aunt passed away from measles in the 1950s, so I had the personal experience of knowing of someone who had lost their life to measles. For that reason, I was always adamant that my first-born would be immunised. “I wanted to make an informed decision. I did a lot of internet research. Make sure you look at reputable websites. Don’t just Google the risks and side effects. There are so many scaremongering websites out there, but none are proven as reliable sources. It’s very much a case of making sure you’re reading proven facts, not somebody’s opinion. “I think for a lot of people, especially those who haven’t been around people with additional needs, it’s something that, in their mind, why take the risk? My son Sam is autistic, but I think autism and vaccines are two separate things. For me, it is better to have a child that’s alive, with or without issues, than a child who isn’t alive.” We reached out to speak to an anti-vaxxer, but none were available to comment for the article.
It’s important to do your own research when looking into the vaccination debate. You can find more information at www.immunology.org or www.nhs.uk/ conditions/vaccinations www.familylifemagazine.co.uk

INTERVIEW
FIVE MINUTES WITH...
Mrs Meldrum Mums online look like they’ve got it all worked out, don’t they? We caught up with YouTuber and mum of three, Rebecca Meldrum (AKA @mrsrmeldrum), to chat dealing with mumshamers and how social media can be deceiving
S
crolling through Instagram, it feels like everyone has their life completely figured out. This can be ten times worse if you have children; seeing mums on YouTube and social media thriving, while you’ve somehow burned breakfast, and dealt with three nappy explosions this morning alone. Motherhood can become a lonely place for many, and social media can often make it worse. One mum trying to change this, bringing a more honest portrayal of motherhood to Instagram, is Rebecca Meldrum. “Mum-shaming is so hard and something I face daily, if not hourly,” explains Rebecca. “I think the best thing to remember is that it speaks volumes about them not you. Trusting your gut, building a good support network around you and always knowing that you are doing your best is key. Gosh I wish I had the magic answer!” BEGINNINGS Rebecca started her YouTube channel five years ago, when she was pregnant with her second daughter. Since, she’s amassed over 100,000 subscribers, and is not far behind in Instagram followers, either. “My husband was working offshore at the time and I thought starting a YouTube channel would be a lovely way to document my pregnancy, and remember everything I’d forgotten first time round,” reminisces Rebecca. “I like to keep it real and honest, so I share lots of things that are going on in my life.”
BOOK Rebecca has documented everything on her YouTube channel: from days out and shopping hauls, to pregnancy reveals and live births, Rebecca’s followers have been with her though it all, including the launch of her upcoming book, Mummy and Me: An Activity Book: Complete Together, Keep Forever. “I’m so excited but also a little nervous,” admits Rebecca. “It’s a mum and child activity book, and has memory pages, little games and fun craft ideas, to create and capture memories with your children. I just hope people love it as much as I do. It has the seal of approval from my eldest daughter Safiyah and that’s the main thing.” SUPPORT Being a mum in the public eye can be stressful, but Rebecca is happy, as long as she can help other mums in the process.
There’s so much pressure on women and mums to have it all figured out, when mostly we’re all just winging it “You’re not alone,” stresses Rebecca. “It might feel like you are, but I guarantee even those mums who look like they have it all figured out will have hard days. There’s so much pressure on women and mums to have it all figured out, when mostly we’re all just winging it.”
Rebecca’s book, Mummy and Me: An Activity Book: Complete Together, Keep Forever, is on sale now. YouTube: Mrs Meldrum Instagram: @mrsrmeldrum www.familylifemagazine.co.uk

SUMMER DATE NIGHTS
It’s finally happened: a rare evening when all the kids are at sleepovers, or you’ve managed to bag a babysitter before anyone else. But, what to do with your evening of freedom?
A
s parents, life is hectic, and often your love life can live at the bottom of the pile. It’s important to take some time for you and your partner, to reconnect and spend some time as adults. Regardless if it’s a last-minute date night, or one you’ve been planning for months, the world is your oyster – well, for one night, at least.
THEATRE
You did your time at the pantos over Christmas: now it’s time to treat yourself to a show with no slapstick or old maids in sight. Get dressed up in your finest attire and head to a civilised night at the theatre. Kinky Boots struts in to Aberdeen’s His Majesty’s Theatre from 23 April until 4 May. With songs by pop icon Cyndi Lauper, Kinky Boots takes you from the factory floor to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. Whether you’re looking for something different to do on date night, or a fun night out with friends, a night at Kinky Boots will be one you’ll remember.
NIGHT ON THE TOWN
You often forget the simple pleasure of adult surroundings when you spend most of your free time with the kids. Add a touch of romance to your weekend and head to the place you went on your first date, and recreate the night? Or try that new, fancy restaurant in town you’ve driven past on your way home from work every night for the last month. In Edinburgh and Glasgow, Six By Nico (www.sixbynico.co.uk) is a treat sure to impress. Indulge in their six course tasting menu, with a new theme every six weeks you’ll be booking in again and again. Or try something new together, which can be great for bonding. Try your hand at an evening dance class, cooking lesson, escape room, or even a chocolate-making workshop, to connect in a brand-new way. Go for a round of crazy golf, or hit the rink – roller or ice – for a fun-filled evening you won’t forget anytime soon.
STAY AT HOME
Some of the best date nights are spent in the comfort of your own home, snuggled up in front of the telly, without having to worry about putting the kids to bed, or clearing up the remnants of dinner from the floor. You could start a sleepover club with your siblings or your parent friends, and take turns hosting all the childen for a night, to give everyone a night off. Any excuse to indulge in marshmallows and hot coco. Order a take away, or cook a romantic meal together and catch up over a glass of wine. Kid-talk is off limits – use the evening to talk about the grown-up issues you don’t get to discuss when the little ones are around. No matter how you spend your evening, make sure you do something you both love. To book your tickets for Kinky Boots, and experience the energy, joy and laughter of the dazzling show, visit www.aberdeenperformingarts.com www.familylifemagazine.co.uk
