I LOVE THE BONES OF YOU
Family is the grounding factor in all of our lives. Having appeared in successful productions for 34-years, actor Christopher Eccleston credits one man, in life and death, who has stood by his side: his father, Ronnie

nown and loved for his eclectic roles ranging from Our Friends in the North, The A Word, or the man who was the face of Dr Who’s reinvention: Christopher Eccleston’s career has been a whirlwind of success. For Christopher, family has always been the grounding factor in his life. However, as he was appearing in productions loved far and wide, Christopher was on a journey that many families across Scotland, and the UK, face.

In 2000, Christopher’s beloved father, Ronnie Eccleston, was diagnosed with dementia. A cruel illness, Christopher’s foray into writing has seen the actor reveal what it was like to watch as his father succumbed to the illness. “I knew this would have tickled my dad pink because he was a great man of books and reading,” reveals Christopher who recently released his book, I Love the Bones of You: My Father and the Making of Me (19 September). Originally penning an article for The Guardian
about his family’s experience of dementia, it was this that propelled the move to write a book. “[The article] generated a lot of interest, which surprised me because all I was talking about was a very common experience: which is someone with dementia in your family. So, I was approached to do a book and I said yes, then I said no, then I said yes, and then no again, and then yes,” laughs Christopher.

“In the meantime I felt we were making leaps with the discussion on mental health in this country. Over the last eight or nine years, dementia and autism – which I’m involved in through The A Word – has become a huge financial, medical, social issue. The time just happened to be correct [to write this book],” continues Christopher. “I thought if I tried to write something honestly it might resonate. That’s what I found when I worked on Our Friends in the North, or Hillsborough: people respond to honesty.” The warmth and openness exudes from Christopher, who has a passion for social justice and ensuring everyone has the opportunities they deserve. It is no wonder then, that I Love the Bones of You is such a powerful read. Although the main journey is of a child’s love and adoration for their parents and the challenges of caring for a parent with dementia; in an honest, emotive memoir, Christopher has detailed the highs and lows of his private life.

The resurgence of a British classic took the world by storm in 2005 where Christopher became the face of, possibly, the most iconic science fiction character to date: Dr Who. Flying through time and space alongside his sidekick Rose Tyler (played by Billie Piper), Dr Who was a resounding success. However, as Dr Who was battling the Daleks, Christopher was tackling his own emotional challenges. “My issues with food began when I was six or seven,” says Christopher, who has detailed his journey living with body issues, anorexia and clinical depression within his new book. “They quietened down, but when I was 19 they got a vice like grip on me and they never let go until my mid-to-late 40s. “I imagine that 17-year-old boy – or even a 12-year-old boy or 12-year-old girl – taking the first steps into that illness and thinking: ‘That guy in Dr Who was successful, he had it and I’m not alone, I’m not weird; I’m not taboo.’ That’s what you hope.” During the period of 2017/18, 536 people in Scotland alone were treated for eating disorders. However, there are many people who may be experiencing this illness in silence. From watching your child live through an eating disorder, or as an adult facing your own journey: Christopher’s book is set to challenge the taboo. Christopher continues: “I think of the young generation – I do, I’m not ashamed to say that as I do have children – who are bombarded with idealised body imagery. They are bombarded with sexualised imagery from a very early age, and they feel they have to reflect that imagery. Hopefully, with an increased discussion on mental health will give them another alternative. I would hope if there is a 17 year-old Northern lad, who thinks he’s got to be macho and he can’t be vulnerable, then this might help.”

I Love the Bones of You is a journey, and family is at the heart of that journey. When the unfortunate time comes for us to lose a loved one, we can continue to feel their presence, and this is no different for Christopher who feels his father still walks beside him.
Even so, it appears Christopher’s book will have a more powerful impact than he might first realise: breaking down barriers and making us realise that we all need to be there for each other. “I hate giving advice,” laughs Christopher when asked how his life lessons could help another parent, individual or young person. He is a humble Northern man to the core as his parting words are exactly what someone would need to hear. “It’s important for people to know that they’re not alone. You would be surprised to know how many people [have also experienced] severe, clinical depression. I talk about that openly. The number of people who reveal they’ve
had an interlude always surprises me; it takes one person to speak out about it. You will always find someone who will not judge you. From 15-minute beginner cardio sessions at home to full-body workouts: there is a YouTube channel to meet your fitness needs. MadFit is just one channel that will see you getting fit and healthy in no time. The sessions each last for 20-minutes and rarely require any equipment – an added bonus – with poses lasting only one minute, your workout will be over before you know it. Routines regularly feature yoga moves to Pilates, but if a HIIT session is more your fitness level, then you can’t go wrong with The Body Coach (www.thebodycoach. com). There really is a fitness regime for everyone. FiiT (fiit.tv) is an online course that has free and premium options to get you active in no time. The free service has over 75 on-demand classes, tailored training plans perfect for your specific fitness level – there’s even an option to train alongside your friends. With new weekly workouts, you’re sure to find a class that suits your style. FOOD This winter we’re banishing fad diets and
focusing on nutrition. There are plenty of things you can do to improve your diet, which can make a positive impact on your overall health and wellbeing, too. Mindful eating is a great habit to get into. When you sit down for dinner – whether that be by yourself, with your partner, family or friends – remove any distractions, so that you can really enjoy your meal. That means no television or podcasts in the background, listening to music or eating on the couch. The mindful eating movement recommends sitting at a table, drinking more water throughout the meal and eating your favourite food last. This is
thought to promote a more positive eating experience for couples and families, and is a great way of winding down after a busy day at work. You could also give meal prepping a try this winter. Not only does this save you valuable time out of your busy working day and pennies in the bank account, it can be a great way of ensuring you eat healthy meals at lunch time, rather than nipping to the supermarket for a meal deal, or heading to the canteen. Get the whole family involved and discover different recipes that you enjoy and can heat up in the staff room microwave. You’ll never go back to a meal deal again.

Start storing your healthy snacks on the middle shelf of your fridge – you’re more likely to notice them if they’re in your direct eyeline and therefore, more likely to choose them over less healthy alternatives

Take a break away from your workspace during your lunch break – not only will you get some muchneeded fresh air, you’ll also manage to get some extra steps in during the working day

Peace of mind
There’s no denying life is hectic and it can be challenging to get some well-deserved ‘you time’ pencilled in. Always being on the go can significantly impact your mental health and wellbeing, in the hustle and bustle, how can you reclaim peace of mind?

ecoming more aware of our health and mental wellbeing is imperative for a successful, healthy life. As more and more of us focus on the importance of selfcare, we can recognise symptoms and emotions of burnout, or the need to take a step back: the discussion on wellbeing is paving the way for more normal, honest conversations on our mental health. But, there are times when we can feel overwhelmed – and that is a normal part of life.
OWNING IT
One of the most common mental health
conditions in the UK is generalised anxiety disorder. Yes, anxiety is a natural reaction to certain circumstances and, at times, we do need a bit of anxiety or stress to spur us on. However, anxiety which is continually heightened can have a detrimental impact on your daily life. This is exactly what happened to journalist and author, Caroline Foran. “I probably always had anxiety throughout my life, but didn’t realise that this is what I had,” explains Caroline who experienced debilitating anxiety after she started a new job that left Caroline feeling under extreme pressure. “Had I known then what I know now and been able to normalise anxiety: I
would have given myself a break. I would have appreciated that anxiety doesn’t have to build up because of some major life event; it can build up from stress,” continues Caroline. “Once I accepted that I couldn’t cure anxiety and I couldn’t get rid of it, then the fog lifted.”
WELLBEING
Accepting that a situation you are in may be contributing to your levels of stress is the first step to tackling feelings of anxiety and nervousness within your daily life. When work, social activities, to managing the household finances becomes too much: it’s only natural that your wellbeing may be affected. familylifemagazine.co.uk 15

“I realised I needed to work with my anxiety and not against it. But, that is a really hard place to get to,” adds Caroline. “As a way to cope, I started to do a lot of research into understanding what anxiety is and why I’m feeling it, and why it is a normal stress response for the body. This helped me accept that this wasn’t my fault, I wasn’t weak.” Thankfully, there are greater resources to help manage our wellbeing on a day-today basis.

“I knew I wasn’t the only person feeling this,” emphasises Caroline. Through her experiences, Caroline wrote Owning It, a guide for people experiencing debilitating anxiety. The success of the book was in part due to Caroline’s frank discussions of her own experience, which many people could relate to. From the book, Caroline launched her first podcast Owning It: The Anxiety Podcast. Series one of the podcast (available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts, with series two of the podcast set to launch in October) sees Caroline speaking with comedians to CBT experts about their personal or professional experiences of anxiety, in a bid to normalise the condition and provide guidance for listeners.
Caroline enthuses: “I want to give people really practical advice that they can apply to their lives – I didn’t want to create something for passive listening, I wanted to help people feel they could actually do something.” Similarly, Headspace (www.headspace. com) is a powerful tool, with many free meditation routines available for people to take a moment for themselves. You can tailor your meditation to a time that works for you and an area you feel is causing you stress, be that going to work or an inability to get to sleep. Or Hurdle (available through Apple Podcasts) goes on a weekly journey with a different protagonist discussing the highs and lows of their life, and how wellness has helped them get through challenging times. Yes, there’s no denying that life can become overwhelming at times and it can be hard to slow down. For your mental health and wellbeing, it is important to take time for you, to concentrate on what is happening in your world and what small steps you can take to own your experiences and take control of your mental health. From podcasts to discussing how you’re feeling: you’ll have peace of mind in no time.
THE POWER OF CHANGE We’re all guilty of overlooking our personal wellbeing, but small, consistent steps can make significant results to your mood and productivity. What simple wellbeing steps could you add to your daily routine? STAY HYDRATED How often do you drink water during the day? You could probably drink some more, drinking more water throughout the day will keep you energised and your body will certainly thank you for it. GET OUTSIDE Heading out for a long walk or a run will quickly leave you feeling more energised. here’s nothing more fulfilling than giving back to a valuable cause, but with so many charities doing great work to help the local community and wider society, it can be hard to know where to turn when you want to lend a helping hand. Lesley first got involved with Volunteer Glasgow after attending their drop-in service. “I had a chat with the volunteer advisor, who put me at ease right away and was very encouraging,” Lesley explains. “Volunteer Glasgow had an opportunity available in their office to join the Welcome Team, which is a reception role. It was a great fit for me and I’ve been doing it now for around two years.” Volunteer Glasgow has an exciting range of opportunities with different charities and organisations in central Glasgow and the wider area, and there’s something for everyone.

Volunteering has numerous benefits, for your physical and mental health, and to help support your local community, too. egardless if you are thinking about starting a family or are a tried and tested parent, what you need and want from your job will change over time. You may have worked in a specific field for years, or you may have had a history of different jobs here and there: when the time comes to change career path it’s best to consider all the options. Claire Simmons and Fiona Haynes provide career coaching and mentoring through their company newfuture.me. With more than three decades of experience between them, Claire and Fiona have helped countless parents choose the right career path. Each parent’s needs are different when it comes to their career, Fiona emphasises: “What we want is changing all of the time and what we want out of work adapts and matures as you go through your career cycle and your family grows.” “Sometimes people have only had a few months maternity leave, sometimes they have been off for years and now it’s the right time to return to the workforce,” explains Claire.
MOVE
The desire to make a big career change could come at any point in your working life, but if you want to make the move it is important to be confident that this is the right decision for you. “It’s not always necessary to make a big career change,” advises Fiona. “Sometimes it’s possible to negotiate the way you’re working with your employer – if you can work less contract hours or have more flexibility, this can sometimes be a better solution.” The motivation to move on can come from a lack of enjoyment in your current role, a poor work-life balance or just wanting to know what else is out there. The reasons are unique to you, but if you are feeling unfulfilled then it is worth investigating. “Some people don’t actually want to go back to the job they were in before, so they are looking for help, support and guidance in terms of a similar role or maybe doing something completely different,” explains Claire. “It’s quite often about discovering what else is out there, one size doesn’t fit all with a career transition.”

out of a new career, a better worklife balance is key to the success of making a career change. Without carefully considering these factors you could end up regretting the change and find yourself in an equally challenging scenario. “It’s a whole balancing act between weighing up how much push and pull factors there are,” says Fiona. “It’s not [a decision] to just enter into lightly, it’s something you need to think through, and we help you to do that in a realistic, balanced, constructive way.”
SKILLS COACH
The prospect of applying for a new job, attending an interview and starting afresh in a new workplace can seem daunting – that is where a career coach could assist you and help build your confidence. “Maybe you haven’t had to apply for new jobs for several years so you are out of touch with what the most up to date practices are in the industry, what selection techniques are used or what skills are in demand these days,” stresses Claire. “Where to look for jobs because it has changed so much in the last ten years.” A new job doesn’t have to mean the same job, Fiona says: “It’s very common to think about doing something different or, if you are conscious that you have been out of the market for a while, wanting to make sure you progress and move forward. “As people’s families grow – what they want out of life and their career changes.”

“If you’ve got to the point where you’re really unhappy, you’re not getting satisfaction, you’re not challenged and you feel miserable going into work, weigh up making a significant change to make things better,” recommends Fiona. “Ask yourself: will a new path suit the way you want to work; will you be able to earn the money you need – we’ve all got bills and mortgages to pay.” Balancing what is necessary; earning enough money to cover your outgoings, knowing what you want
Making a career change doesn’t have to happen in the same sector you are in, Claire says: “There are so many opportunities out there for people that they don’t realise, if it is something realistic that has come to mind then it’s probably worth exploring further.” Maternity leave, paternity leave or time off being a full-time parent is a great opportunity to reflect on your situation, what you want and what skills you already have to provide a prospective employer. You might already have a specific set of skills fitted to the industry you work in, but this isn’t all you bring to the table. Being a parent opens new doors for you, Claire adds: “It’s not just thinking about your transferable skills in work, being a parent there’s so many other skills you develop. Parents are some of the best multiskilled, multitaskers on the planet.” From good time keeping, negotiation and planning skills, to a knowledge of nutrition, take note of what you have learnt from starting a family. “Some people become very active in child and parent focused groups or sometimes might help out at a nursery class or a play scheme,” says Claire. “There are other skills that parents develop but might not even realise they have.” Whether you want to pursue the career you have dreamt of since you were a child, start your own business or try something completely new – with the right planning and support a major career change could give you everything you are looking for.

Self-Saucing Chocolate Pudding A light chocolate sponge with a warm rich chocolate sauce – guaranteed to please any chocolate lover SERVES 6 PREP TIME: 30 MINUTES COOKING TIME: 25-30 MINUTES FOR THE PUDDING 100g melted butter, plus extra for greasing 3 eggs 175ml milk 250g self-raising flour 50g cocoa powder 1 tsp baking powder
150g soft light brown sugar 120g Mackie’s 70% dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids), finely chopped 120g Mackie’s Milk chocolate, finely chopped FOR THE SAUCE 300ml water 200g light brown soft sugar 40g cocoa powder
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C and butter a two-litre ovenproof dish. 2. Whisk the melted butter, eggs and milk together in a jug until smooth. Sift the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder into a bowl then stir in the sugar. 3. Pour the butter mixture into the flour mixture and mix well to a smooth batter. Stir in the dark and milk chocolate and spoon into the prepared baking dish. 4. To make the sauce, bring 300ml water and the sugar to the boil in a saucepan, then add the cocoa powder and whisk until smooth. Pour over the top of the batter then bake for 25–30 minutes. The top of the sponge will be just firm to the
touch. 5. Serve hot with a scoop or two of real dairy ice cream.

1. Preheat oven to 350F, 180C, 160 Fan, Gas 4. 2. Grease and line a 20cm baking tin. 3. Melt the butter and chocolate in a pan over low heat stirring occasionally. 4. Remove from heat and whisk in the cocoa powder and sugar. 5. Whisk in the eggs one at a time. 6. Fold in the oatmeal. 7. Pour into the tin and bake for 25–30 minutes. 8. Cut into squares when cold.

Ras Malai Cake Ras malai is Bengali for ‘juice creams’. They are these little bits of cake that bob around in gently spiced milk, like a floating cheesecake. This is Nadiya’s version without the floating. Same delicious flavours – rich, creamy and lightly spiced and fragrant. FOR THE CAKE 10 strands of saffron, dropped into 4 tablespoons of warm milk 250g unsalted butter 250g caster sugar 5 medium eggs, beaten 250g self-raising flour 1 teaspoon baking powder FOR THE MILK DRIZZLE 100g milk powder 150ml boiling water Cardamom seeds, removed from the pods and ground
TO DECORATE Edible rose petals, mixed with 100g roughly chopped pistachios

FOR THE BUTTERCREAM 2 cardamom pods, crushed 3 tablespoons whole milk 300g unsalted butter, softened 600g icing sugar, sifted
1. Preheat the oven to 170°C/fan 150°C. Grease and line two 20cm sandwich tins. 2. Make the saffron milk. Place the butter and sugar in a bowl and whisk until light and fluffy and almost white. Add the eggs a little at a time, making sure to keep whisking. Then add the flour, baking powder and saffron milk, and fold the mixture until you have a smooth, shiny batter. 3. Divide the mixture between the two tins and level the tops. Bake for 20–25 minutes. 4. Meanwhile, make the milk drizzle by mixing the milk powder with the boiling water in a bowl. Add the ground cardamom seeds and mix. As soon as the cakes are out of the oven, drizzle some of the milk all over the
top of both cakes and leave in the tin for at least 10 minutes before turning them out and removing them to cool on a rack. 5. To make the buttercream, put the crushed cardamom pods in a small bowl of the milk and leave to infuse. 6. Meanwhile, put the butter into a mixing bowl and whisk until very soft and light in colour. Add the icing sugar a little at a time, whisking after each addition, until all combined. Then pour the cardamom milk through a sieve into the buttercream and whisk until really light and fluffy. 7. Once the cakes are totally cool, place one cake on your serving dish and spread an even layer of buttercream over it. Put the other cake on top. Flip the cake over so the milk drizzle top
becomes the bottom and sandwiches the buttercream. Spread some buttercream evenly across the top and the sides and use a ruler to level off the edges. 8. If you have any cream left over you can pipe little kisses on top. Then gently take the rose petals and pistachios and press them into the bottom edge of the cake.

ach family has a unique journey to adoption. After Steven and his wife, Aileen had several years being unsuccessful in having a birth family – they made the decision to adopt.
PREPARATION
They explored adoption in depth, linking with adopters they knew and contacting several agencies. With their hearts set on adopting they met with St Andrew’s Children’s Society to start the adoption process. “Choosing the adoption agency that feels right is so important – as you open up your life to them,” emphasises Steven.
After a series of initial interviews, Steven and Aileen started adoption preparation classes. These classes were the first step to the couple becoming adoptive parents. The length of the adoption process is unique to everyone, but Steven and Aileen always believed that the long time scale was a positive. “I think building that time into the process is really good,” suggests Steven. “You have plenty of time to talk about it with each other.”

From the day they contacted St Andrew’s Children’s Society, Steven and Aileen received information,

reassurance and endless support. As the couple completed extensive background checks there was always someone on hand to listen to their questions. One particular form took nearly a year to complete, working alongside their social worker to detail their family history. “Get as much information as possible and go into it as informed as you can,” recommends Steven.

With their hearts set on welcoming Bethany into their family, Steven and Aileen put the wheels in motion to adopt her. LOOK GOOD, FEEL BETTER Going through cancer treatment can have a physical and emotional toll, and many feel they have to put on a brave face. One charity is working hard to change this, and ensure everyone feels beautiful before, during and after chemotherapy
“D
uring times of challenge or crisis, the desire to look positive and feel confident is often still very strong,” explains Amanda Yeomans, regional manager for Scotland and Northern Ireland of Look Good Feel Better (LGFB). “Nowhere is this seen more clearly than when people are struggling to cope with the visible side effects of cancer treatments.”
WORKSHOPS
LGFB is an international charity introduced to improve emotional health and wellbeing of people going through cancer treatment. The charity runs workshops offering beauty and self-care advice, teaching skills and techniques to help cope with the side-effects of treatment. It also offers people the chance to socialise with others going through a similar experience. At workshops, people learn how to manage changes in skin texture and tone, loss of eyelashes and eyebrows, and receive some well-deserved pampering.
GUIDANCE
“Feeling lonely, frightened and alienated is how many people describe going through treatment,” says Amanda. “People leave the sessions having learnt a lot, had fun, and chatting with a new-found confidence and very often wanting to go out that evening.” Ann Handley-Greaves began attending the LGFB workshops after learning about them through cancer
charity, Maggie’s. “It’s difficult to explain how much Maggie’s has helped me, and getting involved in the make-up tutorial was the icing on the cake,” Ann enthuses. “We were a group of about ten ladies, all ages and sizes and within the space of a shared cuppa we had all gelled. “The beauticians were so helpful and patient: because I had very shaky hands that day, they did the make-up for me and at the end of the session I looked like someone else, it was amazing.”
CONFIDENCE
As well as having practical benefits and equipping attendees with new skills, the workshops can also have a hugely positive emotional benefit, too. “What was special is that we all forgot about our troubles, and were sharing experiences, not just about cancer, but all aspects of our lives and families,” continues Ann. “We tend
to cover up a lot from our family and friends to save them from any more pain. Being able to talk about cancer in such a relaxed and private manner is so therapeutic.” Look Good Feel Better runs sessions at Maggie’s Centres throughout Scotland and internationally, helping boost the confidence of thousands of people going through cancer treatment each year. “It’s nerve-wracking to walk into a room of strangers while you’re at your most vulnerable, but please do try – it will boost your confidence and wellbeing,” Ann urges. “I actually turned an emotional corner during the session: I did look good and certainly felt a whole lot better.” Get your confidence back with Look Good Feel Better (www.lookgoodfeelbetter. co.uk) and Maggie’s for extra support (www.maggiescentres.org). familylifemagazine.co.uk 33

Someone like me The most common cancer across the UK: breast cancer changes people’s lives on a daily basis. Thankfully, more people are surviving cancer and telling their story to support others, Cheryl Redpath shares how she is someone like you
I
was looking out of the car window thinking, ‘I’ve just been told I have cancer, but I don’t feel any different.’ I did feel fine, I felt on top of the world – and then I’m being told I’ve got a diagnosis of cancer,” remembers Cheryl Redpath about her reaction to the news she had invasive breast cancer. At the age of 53, Cheryl, like many other women before her, went to get her first mammogram. A mammogram is a breast x-ray, which all women will receive as part of a national breast screening initiative from the age of 50. Typically, you can expect to be invited back for a mammogram every three years.
DIAGNOSIS
Cheryl continues: “I have always led a relatively healthy lifestyle, and I was never big chested, so I was maybe naive to think that I wouldn’t get breast cancer.” After receiving her mammogram, Cheryl didn’t give the test another thought until she was called back to her local hospital for further testing. As a naturally optimistic person, Cheryl wasn’t concerned with this and participated in another mammogram and additional testing. “I was still naive to think that because my breasts are so small that I wouldn’t have anything. My husband had seen people come and go, and he thought quicker than I had that there might have been something wrong,” says Cheryl. “When he was asked in, that’s when I started to think something wasn’t right. I had no lumps or bumps. The only thing I had, which was on the morning of my

mammogram, was that my left breast was slightly fuller.” Hearing the news that you have a diagnosis of cancer is a whirlwind of emotions. There are many options available for women who are living with breast cancer, for Cheryl, she decided almost immediately to have a mastectomy, following her doctor’s recommendation.

TREATMENT
Surgery is the initial route for many people living with breast cancer, and it was the right option for Cheryl. Determined not to wait a moment longer, after receiving her diagnosis in December of 2014, Cheryl received her mastectomy and was released from hospital three days after her husband’s birthday. In mid-January, on her daughter’s birthday, Cheryl started chemotherapy. “It did take me quite a while to look at my scar,” reveals Cheryl who had to come to terms with losing her breast. “It is just trying to build yourself up for it. Maybe, it was easier for me because I didn’t have much on the other side, whereas someone who was big busted: that would be very traumatic, I would imagine.” A simple mastectomy will see surgeons remove as much breast tissue as possible, including the skin and nipple area. After the operation, Cheryl’s nurses were on hand to provide an adaptive bra for her to wear with prosthetic breasts. “Once that’s done, you do feel back to yourself again,” continues Cheryl. “For myself, I would never have reconstruction, but you do lose a bit of femininity. You just don’t feel your whole self. However, I can live with that knowing that I don’t have cancer.” With support from Breast Cancer Care, their online forums, friends and family to speaking with other women in similar situations: Cheryl is thriving five years on from her initial diagnosis and is now preparing to help others facing a similar journey as she has survived.

Having always been a keen volunteer, Cheryl is now giving back to Breast Cancer Care by becoming a Someone Like Me volunteer. Here volunteers speak with others going through treatment. She is also preparing to participate in The Show Scotland 2019 in October, which will see 24 courageous models take to the stage

It’s not something we like to think about, but planning for death is an essential part of life. Yes, it might seem daunting at first, but there’s plenty of support at hand to help you plan for the future, and create a Will

any of us have a rough idea of our wishes for after death, but finding the time to make an appointment with a solicitor to put the plans in place can be a barrier. However, having a Will is essential to make sure your wishes are carried out after your death and there’s plenty of support available to find out your options.
ADVICE
“The primary purpose of a Will is to let your family know what your intentions are after you die,” explains John Roberts, director of Austin Lafferty, a solicitors and estate agent with offices across Glasgow and Lanarkshire. “If you don’t have a Will, there are rules in Scotland, called rules of intestacy. Those rules determine how your estate will be distributed if you don’t have a Will. Most people would rather decide themselves what happens to their estate.” Your Will includes your wishes for after you die: funeral arrangements, and what you’d like to happen to your estate. Usually, people include assets they own, such as their property, car, savings, shares, bank accounts and any sentimental items or family heirlooms.

You might be unsure whether you need a
Will, especially if you don’t own your own home or have any savings. “One main benefit of having a Will is that you have an executor: the person that ensures your wishes after death are carried out,” John continues. “They step in and start making decisions, so it makes [the process] a lot simpler. The executor should be someone you trust. It can be a friend, a relative, your child, your friend, your neighbour, or even your solicitor.” It’s a big responsibility to be someone’s executor, so you should always discuss the role with your chosen person beforehand, to make sure they are aware of what will be involved.
CHARITY
One of the main barriers to creating a Will can be the cost, which starts at around £140. However, various events take place throughout the year, such as Will Aid. Around 1,000 solicitors take part in these charity events, where you’ll be able to have a professional Will written for the price of a donation to charity. Creating your Will now is the main way to avoid stress and additional spending for your family and isn’t as daunting as you might at first think. With plenty of support and organisation, you’ll be able to ensure your family is well taken care of when you’re gone.

Darker nights and colder weather, unfortunately, mean one thing: higher energy bills. But, if you’re worried about extra costs, there’s support available to ensure your home is warm, without breaking the bank

e’re all guilty of occasionally leaving the TV on standby or forgetting to turn off the heating before bed, which can add up to a hefty energy bill at the end of the month. But, if you’re concerned about your energy consumption through the autumn and winter months, there’s help on hand for advice and support. Home Energy Scotland (HES) is a network of local advice centres covering the entirety of Scotland; they offer free, impartial advice on energy saving tips, keeping your home warm and energy efficient, cutting water waste and more. The programme is funded by the Scottish Government, as part of their action to tackle fuel poverty and the climate emergency. “If you can’t afford to heat your home properly, it can have an adverse effect on physical and mental health,” explains Ruth Gray, marketing and communications manager at Home
Energy Scotland. “It can be very isolating and this is often accompanied by a feeling of helplessness and not being able to do anything about it.” Being unable to heat your home can affect your physical and emotional health, while also aggravating worries about finances. This is where Home Energy Scotland can lend a helping hand.
SAVINGS
Home Energy Scotland helps people access the Warmer Homes Scotland scheme, which aims to reduce the prices of energy bills and make homes more energy efficient. “Warmer Homes Scotland is aimed at households that might struggle to heat their home, or find it difficult to keep up with their energy bills,” Ruth says. “Not everyone in Scotland has access to cheap energy, or an energy-efficient home, so that’s what Home Energy Scotland is there for: to try and help people get
access to necessary support.” Through the scheme, home adaptations are available to make facilities more functional and costeffective. Changes can include wall or loft insulation, draught-proofing, central heating and even home renewables systems. In the majority of cases, the adaptations are free of charge to the householder. “Circumstances where the householder might have to contribute would be if the work required was going to cost more than the maximum funding available,” Ruth continues. “The householder would be invited to make a contribution rather than us telling them it’ll cost too much and not do the work. We can sometimes offer an interest free loan to make that easier, too.”

If you’re looking to make some small savings in the run up to Christmas, there are plenty of small things you can do that will save you money without even realising.

energy saving measures installed, and since the launch of the scheme in 2015, over 16,000 homes have undergone improvements. The scheme has also been able to provide smaller scale changes, including heating controls, thermostats, smoke detectors and carbon monoxide monitors. Small changes that can make a significant difference. On average, homes that are upgraded through the Warmer Homes Scotland scheme save £300 each year in energy costs and become 20 per cent more energy efficient: not only will it save you money, you’ll also be playing your part in saving the planet. “In Scotland, about 15 per cent of carbon emissions come from domestic energy use,” explains Ruth. “So, by making those properties more energy efficient, we’re also making a carbon saving which helps with the fight against the climate emergency we’re
