BREA

It’s been a long time since your summer holiday sipping cocktails by the beach, and the weather is playing havoc with your mojo. Face it – summer is over. We had that one great day – and you were probably stuck in the office – but now it’s raining, cold and just plain miserable. Never fear – we have the best winter breaks to get you feeling all fuzzy inside

Away SUPER CYPRUS Grab a last-minute deal and head off to the blue seas and yacht-filled bays of Paphos in Cyprus. MARKETS OF MARRAKECH Soak up some last-minute sun without travelling half way across the world. Morocco has certainly become a hot spot when it comes to week-long breaks or four-day weekends, and the city of Marrakech is a prime location. Visit the Ouzoud Falls before getting a body scrub in the Riad to make sure your tan is

looking on point for the Christmas party. Then take in the local culture by visiting the markets, getting henna tattoos and indulging in scrumptious street food. With packages coming in at £400, this is a prime destination for sun, culture, city breaks and relaxation. You really can have it all.

TRAVEL

EAK GO FOR GERMANY What is the best part of winter, you ask? Well, a German market of course. Pack your bags for an extended weekend city break in Frankfurt, Berlin or Stuttgart to get your festive fill. Wrap up warm and hop on the plane to experience a delectable traditional Christmas cookie, such as a lebkuchen,

or sip some mulled wine as you listen to music and walk amongst a nativity scene. Germany gets pretty cold in winter, so get your favourite hat and scarf on and enjoy the atmosphere as the snow lightly falls down. Oh, jingle bells indeed.

TROPICAL THAILAND Dust off your swimming cossie and pack the factor 50 for a relaxing break in Thailand. Enjoy the tropical heat and live like a local while appreciating the shrines, temples, and Buddhist monasteries, or indulge in the foreign cuisine around Bangkok. Known as the land of smiles, this is the perfect place to get rid of all your troubles and experience authentic Asian life. From the white beaches in Krabi to the party island of Phuket, there is an elegant mix to keep everyone entertained. Further afield means a little extra money so be prepared to pay from £900 for an all-inclusive package – or you could always buy a plane ticket and see where the night takes you.

Home

on a fine malt and get your taste buds bursting in the 1887 restaurant. Or even take yourself completely off the grid and stay in The Boat House for the ultimate romantic and peaceful self-catering break. There’s so much to do you won’t want to leave.

NORDIC LERWICK

If you’re going to have a staycation, may as well do it right! Head up to the most northerly point in Scotland and visit the mysterious and iconic Shetland Islands. Visiting the town of Lerwick, you can admire the fishing boats moored at the bay mixed in with the Nordic influences of years gone by. Granted, getting to Lerwick can be costly – and time consuming – but the journey is worth the effort.

OFF TO MORAY

Make your way to the Highlands and visit Moray Speyside, nestled between Aberdeen and Inverness. Go golfing, indulge in melt-in-your-mouth Walkers shortbread, listen to local musicians or

go cycling up rugged hills before being left in awe at the costal sunset.

GET OUTDOORS

It’s cold, it’s winter, it’s Scotland, and none of this is putting you off the great outdoors? The Torridon (www. thetorridon.com) in Wester Ross has got your name on it. Put down the mince pie, check out this luxury estate and discover if you’re a dab hand at archery, sea kayaking or rock climbing. Too adventurous? Enjoy the elegantly decorated rooms of The Torridon or sip

UP IN THE SKYE

There’s no better way of unwinding and being at one with nature than heading to a Scottish island. The Isle of Skye is perfect both in summer and winter – and it is incredibly easy to get to. Connected to the mainland by bridge, drink in the rolling hills as you go hiking or sit by the fire in one of Skye’s luxurious hotels. Grab the pennies and treat yourself to fresh fish, cheese, or homemade jewellery and nick nacks to bring home with you. Missing peak summer season guarantees you’ll save a bob or two on accommodation. What are you waiting for?

FINANCE

s e CHRISTMAS pFOR

GET

With – whisper it – Christmas just around the corner, money is going to be on everyone’s minds. So how do you make your cash go a little bit further during the season of spending? We offer up some saving tips, spending hacks and financial wisdom to help you avoid any difficulty ahead of Christmas

W

ith the pressure on to provide the best gifts, the most extravagant dinner and fun-filled activities on the run up to 25 December, it’s no wonder that spending can get out of control as Christmastime approaches each year. If you’re starting to think ahead to Christmas, you’ll be looking for ways to make sure that the festive season goes off with a bang – but that your finances stay under control at the same time. Fortunately, there are lots of things you can do to make sure the spending season doesn’t get too much to handle.

u e

Guess how much each gift will cost – add it up, and see how closely it matches what you have to spend. Assign a price tag to everything, and then stick to it. If you make savings in one area? You can add it on to another. And remember to be strict with yourself!

FIGURE OUT YOUR FINANCES

Look at your savings, take into account what income you have coming in between now and the big day, and look at essential spends in the meantime – then take what you have left over as your Christmas budget.

e

e

e

See what you have from last year that can be re-used or up-cycled – maybe spray paint last year’s baubles a different colour, get creative and adapt that dress from the back of your wardrobe or encourage the kids to help create paper chains to adorn the house. Family Life - Autumn/Winter 2017

FINANCE

Switch banks

Some banks will offer you cash to switch your current account over to them – so you could get as much as £200 simply for changing banks. An extra cash bonus in time for Christmas!

SENSIBLE SHOPPING

Keep your eyes peeled for two-for-one offers, Black Friday sales, multibuys and discounted treats. Shop around too – that toy your kid has their eye on might not be cheapest from the online retailer you usually use. Google’s Shopping tool is a easy way of comparing prices from different shops.

l

BUY SAVINGS STAMPS

Lots of supermarkets have savings stamp schemes, where you purchase stamps throughout the year that you can cash in at a later date. Often, they’ll give you some ‘free money’ to add on – as much as 4% extra.

o r e c e per op o

When it comes to dinner, we all get a bit obsessed with buying ‘the best’ – whether that’s your turkey, the Christmas crackers or the prosecco. But you can often get all the treats for the table at much cheaper prices from budget supermarkets, and you don’t compromise on quality.

e

Don’t leave Christmas planning to the last minute – get onto it now. Think about the whole picture when it comes to budgeting. Include decorations, food, party clothes for the kids, transport and accommodation if you’re travelling over the holidays – not just gifts

How to o

No two ways about it – not all of us have the income, the savings or the resources to get through Christmas comfortably in terms of finance. So you might be looking to external sources for help. There are different ways of financing the festivities – but these often come with added costs.

Payday loans

Payday loan companies are best avoided. These are companies which pay out cash then and there with the idea being that you’ll pay it back by payday – the APR (annual percentage rate), however, tends to be skyhigh, so you pay back much more than you borrow, even if it is a short time.

Credit card

With a credit card, you don’t need to pay back your bank until a set date. You can opt to pay back in part or in full, but any outstanding balance gathers interest, which must be paid back.

Credit unions

Credit unions are viewed as more responsible ways of borrowing. With affordable interest rates and lots of support in place, this could be a good option if you need to borrow cash for Christmas.

Finance

e

o e

On Boxing Day, rather than hitting the sales, why not come up with a savings plan to get you through the 2018 festive season? Rather than splurging £2.50 a day on takeaway coffee, save it! You’ll have a very merry Christmas next year.

e r

With so much to think about ahead of 25 December, don’t let the pressure get you in a flap – with a bit of careful planning, clever spending and sensible thinking, Christmas could be a lot more affordable than you think.

10

Some shops and catalogues let you buy items on ‘finance’ – so you pay them back in instalments. This does have interest added though, so you pay back more than the item itself is actually worth. Before borrowing money, take into consideration how you’ll make your repayments – if you don’t pay back money owed on time, your lender could pursue legal action.

REAL-LIFE

LIFE AFTER A MASTECTOMY With Breast Cancer Awareness Month taking place in October, we find out about the very real impact of the disease from one Scotswoman

H

i, this morning I had breast cancer. This evening I don’t,” said Victoria Derbyshire during her mastectomy video diary. In an announcement that screamed power and strength, journalist Victoria reported on her breast cancer journey. Documenting the quick turnaround from diagnosis to the removal of one breast, she turned a private event into an open diary. With one in eight women in the UK developing cancer, Victoria’s videos, available on YouTube, were an honest account of medication, surgery, recovery and self-preservation. But after an incredibly invasive and traumatic surgery, how do you come back from a mastectomy?

DIAGNOSIS

Lorraine Ross from Perth had a mastectomy after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013. Lorraine was called into hospital for more checks after a routine mammogram. “By the time I got to the biopsy stage, the consultant had advised me that he had found three sites with suspicious cells in the mammogram,” she explains. “Stomach in boots at this point, still a bit in denial, I thought, well it won’t mean surgery if it’s in three small sites. The consultant looked at me as if I was stark raving mad and said, ‘Yes Mrs Ross, I think I can safely say, even at this stage,

In terms of having the reconstruction, I never gave it a second thought – it was happening and I was so grateful for that opportunity

that you’re heading for surgery.’” Around 4,600 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in Scotland each year – and for some, a mastectomy is the most appropriate treatment. A mastectomy is surgery to remove a breast due to cancerous cells. “Everyone thinks of it as a death sentence straight away. They think that’s it without thinking about what could happen with surgery or any other treatment plan,” explains Lorraine. “I got my head into gear. I was thinking, I’m lucky here, and having an immediate reconstruction after my mastectomy gave me an option where I could retain my femininity.” It was this positive attitude Family Life - Autumn / Winter 2017

that made Lorraine determined to get through it.

PREPARATION

“For me, cancer was a word – it wasn’t a death sentence. That was going to be my mantra if anything. It’s a word; it’s not a death sentence. I just have to get through the surgery and that was my fear. Even the thought of going in for an operation made my stomach hurt and my toes curl.” For Lorraine, mental preparation was just as crucial as being physically ready for surgery. From going out for walks, lying down for an hour each day to listening to Paul McKenna’s Happy Tape, Lorraine created her own psychological plan to prepare herself for surgery and the aftercare. On 13 February 2014, Lorraine went under anesthetic and experienced a minor setback – a power cut to be precise, delaying her operation. Taking it

all in her stride, Lorraine returned, ready to get her life back on track. “The whole thing, whilst I wouldn’t want anyone else to go through it, was actually managed very well by the NHS. I think because I had prepared myself both mentally and physically, I knew what to expect,” says Lorraine. “When I came back I could see what happened, I had a few scars but they fade with time… In terms of my body, it’s as good as it’s going to get. It’s been rebuilt and I’m grateful for that. In terms of having the reconstruction, I never gave it a second thought – it was happening and I was so grateful for that opportunity.”

MODEL MATERIAL

The Show Scotland, which will see 22 women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer walk the runway. “We all come in different shapes and sizes, and The Show Scotland will celebrate this,” Lorraine says. “I helped out at last year’s show and it was inspirational. I was on such a high seeing how these courageous women had taken everything that had been thrown at them medically, and some of them had secondary breast cancer. They were there giving it their all, absolutely having a ball.” Lorraine says she couldn’t have got through the experience without her friends, family and healthcare team, and thanks everyone for their support.

Fully recovered, Lorraine now volunteers with Breast Cancer Care to help women Watch as the inspirational women hit the who have recently been diagnosed catwalk at Breast Cancer Care’s The Show or are just out of surgery. Many symptoms of breast cancer, such as breast pain or a lump may in fact be caused by normal breast changes or a benign (not cancer) breast condition. However, if you notice a change, it’s important to see your GP as soon as you can.

Revel in Edinburgh’s creepy past and get the family together to find out about ghosts and witches, unruly school kids and Scottish Halloween traditions. After some frights, make your way under the cobblestones to wander around the vaults – make sure to put your brave face on. Family tickets cost £37, covering two adults and two children (five to 15). Another family favourite for adults and kids is the world-famous Edinburgh Dungeons (www. thedungeons.com/edinburgh). Explore the capital’s past this Halloween with some tongue-incheek comedy and guaranteed screams as you discover the city’s sordid past. With Sinner Savers tickets costing £13, you can 16

experience the dark history of Scotland without breaking the bank – make sure you book in advance. It’s a busy time of year for ghouls, after all... Have the kids looking their best and go on a Steam N Scream tour with Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway (www.bkrailway.co.uk). A great day out for all the family – especially young ones. Head to the tracks and see if any friendly ghosts come out to play. Hop on board and make sure the little ones are dressed to impress for the fancy dress competition, eat some treats and enjoy some spooky entertainment.

There’s no denying that Edinburgh has a murky past and some tales are not for young ears. Leave the kids at home for this one as Mercat Tours also have adultonly tours. Taking place the weekend of Halloween – you know this means business – after 9pm, you’ll wander the

dark side streets of Edinburgh to the haunted Blair Street Underground Vaults as part of the Haunted Halloween tour. Heading down Edinburgh’s Old Town, hear tales of bloody plots, treason and torture from your fully-costumed guide and discover Edinburgh’s true colours. Expect to scream! Go further north and venture to the seemingly quaint city of St Andrews and roam the streets and lanes with St Andrews Ghost Tours (www. standrewsghosttours.com). Head on a night-time walking tour and hope you don’t hear something go bump in the night as you explore the dark streets. The past of St Andrews will come to life as your tour guide tells tales of ghosts and witches to leave you quivering in your boots – with tickets starting from £12, make sure you book your slot before the ghouls come for you...

Scotland is filled with castles, from the Highlands all the way down to the big cities waiting for you to experience their questionable past. From Edinburgh Castle to Cawdor Castle, there is a haunting sure to chill you to the bone. Haunted Rooms (www. hauntedrooms.co.uk) lists the most haunted locations in Scotland and, of course, ghosts love a castle. Cawdor Castle sits close to Nairn, near Inverness, and has ties with Shakespeare so you know it’s going to pack a punch. Visitors claim to have seen the ghost of a handless girl roaming the castle. The ghost is believed to be the Earl of Cawdor’s daughter, who was killed after her father cut off her hands as she hung out of a window trying to escape his wrath. A gruesome tale, but not as sordid as Edinburgh Castle’s past (www. edinburghcastle.gov.uk). Towering over the bustling city, the castle sits on a hill of history and bloodshed haunted by many ghosts. Visitors can look out for a headless drummer boy who is said to be a warning that the castle is set to be besieged. That probably wont happen but it is a fun day out for all the family. If you’re going for a truly terrifying castle experience then head to Crathes Castle (www.nts.org.uk/Visit/ Crathes-Castle) in Aberdeenshire

this Halloween. Get your heart racing during a terrifying Ghoulish Ghost Tour and discover the history of the castle. Built in the 1500s by the Burnett family, the dark towers and grounds of the castle are said to be haunted by the Green Lady – after skeletal remains were found in her room way back in the 1800s, it seems she has some unfinished business. Young children are advised to skip this one – the Green Lady can be terrifying. Tour of the castle not cutting it? Crathes Castle has something else to hit the spot this Halloween with screenings of popular spooky films in the woods of the castle. Families looking to get jumpy can watch classic ghost story Casper. After something more sinister and terrifying? Then Cabin in the Woods is sure to get you running for cover. Oh wait, you’re already in the woods – eek. The screenings will take place on Saturday 28 October and tickets start from £10. Halloween is a holiday everyone can enjoy – no matter what sort of state your nerves are in. From fright night fans to fun even the little ones can get involved with, enjoy the ghostly past Scotland has to offer. With ghoulish tours, eerie woodland screenings and chilling castles, this Halloween is bound to go off with a bang… or a boo!

FOOD AND DRINK

seasonal eating Cooking with ingredients that are produced locally and in-season is guaranteed to make for more interesting mealtimes – and you’re getting food at its freshest! So what’s on the menu for autumn and winter? Check out the below…

OCTOBER

Who doesn’t love a candy apple at Halloween? As luck will have it, apples are in season in October – why not dunk one in chocolate and coat it in sprinkles for a fun snack? Apples also taste spectacular with pork – roast some pork loin with apples, onions, an assortment of roast veg, cider and mustard for a warming autumnal tea.

NOVEMBER

November is prime time for pheasant. While not the most common of meats for a Sunday roast, it’s well worth getting your hands on. Root veg is also making a comeback at this time of year, so pair your game with carrots, potatoes and parsnip, or beetroot, celeriac and kale, or go for a big pot of nutrientpacked soup.

DECEMBER

Many of the ingredients that make up our festive feasts are there because they’re in season. Brussels sprouts, chestnuts and root veg for roasting can be teamed up with traditional turkey, goose, duck or partridge. If you’re over the whole Christmas dinner thing, why not opt for something fishy it s the best time of year for ottish mon fish, mussels and haddock.

JANUARY

To bring in the new year, there’s plenty of game on offer in Scotland, with woodcock, hare and venison deer at their peak, all of which you’ll get from your local butcher. Go

22

for a warming gamey stew or casserole and team it up with purple sprouting broccoli, cabbage, leeks or parsnips.

FEBRUARY

ebruary is fantasti for fish north of the border, with our waters dishing up top quality langoustines, while cod, coley and plaice are starting to come into season. Go for traditional fish and hips, bring a bit of spi e to your life with a fish urry, or simply pan fry and serve with a tasty mix of stir-fried veg for something fresh after all the stodge you’ll be eating over the winter months.

MARCH

The world’s only grower of short sea kale is located in Scotland – and March is the time to get your hands on it! Winter squash is still on offer, and spring greens are starting to make an appearance as the winter months become a distant memory.

WHY GO LOCAL? 1. You’re supporting local farms and businesses 2. In turn, that boosts the economy 3. It’ll reduce your carbon footprint, as the produce doesn’t have to travel as far 4. This also means that there’s less waste 5. The food will be fresher when it gets to you – less time in cold storage

EMMA WILLIS

“I tend to follow

my gut more than trends, it’s important to be comfortable”

As one of the most stylish women on our television sets, Emma Willis shares her fashion inspiration – and her picks from Next’s new autumn/winter range

T

V presenting powerhouse Emma Willis has been announced as Next’s new brand ambassador – and the stylish mum-of-three is the perfect person to front the high street store. Each season, she’ll be selecting her favourite pieces from the Next collection so that you can emulate her look. Here, she shares her favourites for autumn/winter, and gives us some insight into her style. How would you describe your personal style? I would say my personal style is comfortable, with a modern femininity. Who is your style icon? Gwen Stefani, because she’s loud and proud and embraces anything she wants! I’d never have the balls to do what she does, but I like to live vicariously through her style. What are your favourite pieces from the Next A/W 2017 collection? I love the over-the-knee elasticated boots, the slouchy men’s trousers, and the gold sequin skirt. Love love love them. There’s something for everybody in the collection. 24

Where do you get your energy from? Who knows?! Although probably my kids – as much as they tire me out, they also spur me on. When do you feel at your best? I honestly do really feel my best when I’m at home. There’s nothing like closing the front door, slipping off my shoes and popping the kettle on! What makes you happy? I know it’s a bit of a cliché but my family make me giddy with happiness. They’re my everything. What would your three top style tips be for any woman wanting to achieve your look? Don’t over-accessorize. No fussiness, keep everything simple and clean. And embrace tailoring – pick and invest in

really good tailored pieces. Do you follow fashion trends? I think I tend to follow my gut more than trends, it’s important to be comfortable. The minute you feel uncomfortable, you lose confidence. If you’re having a bad day, do you have a go-to outfit which instantly gives you a confidence boost? Comfort again, but I don’t necessarily want a confidence boost if I’m having a bad day. Sometimes I just want to put on a great pair of pyjamas and watch some TV – Next do gorgeous pyjamas. Or if you have to go out, pop on a killer

pair of heels. What item or trend were you initially sceptical about but soon converted? Jumpsuits and colour – now you can’t keep me away from either of them! If you could raid any person’s wardrobe, who would it be? Victoria Beckham, because she designs everything that I would want to wear. HEALTH

LIFESTYLE SWAPS If you’re feeling sluggish, run down and lethargic, it could be time to take a look at your daily route – and how you can switch things up to inject some energy and happiness into your life. Here are a few habits you could change to boost your wellbeing

1 2

THE LIFT FOR THE STAIRS

Taking the stairs over a lift or escalators will help you burn calories – and tone your legs ready for next summer. Climbing eight flights of stairs a day lowers your average early mortality risk by 33%.

NAPPING FOR A WALK

If you’ve got the luxury of being able to take a nap during the day, why not opt for a walk in the fresh air instead? It’ll improve your fitness, and help you sleep better at night too.

4

TAKEAWAY FOR HOME COOKING

Bin the menus that you’ve got stuck to your fridge and make the effort to cook instead. With takeaways, you don’t always know what’s gone into it – by using fresh ingredients and cooking yourself, you’re guaranteed a healthier meal. And a sense of self-satisfaction.

3

DINNER AND A MOVIE FOR AN ACTIVE DATE NIGHT

Rather than a calorific evening, how about dragging your other half out for a more active alternative? Mini golfing, hill climbing, rock climbing or a run round a local park are all options that’ll recharge your batteries and avoid arguments over the remote...

5

SOCIAL MEDIA FOR MEETING UP

We’re all guilty of it – spending more time exchanging messages on Facebook and liking pictures on Instagram than seeing real people. Yet social media is taking its toll on our mental health as we constantly compare ourselves to other people’s ‘perfect’ lives – so give it up and go for a coffee date or drink with your pals instead. You’ll feel miles better for it.

6

FIZZ FOR WATER

Thirsty? Don’t go for a carbonated drink – a can of Coca Cola contains 11g of sugar, that’s almost three teaspoons. Water spiced up with a slice of lemon or sugarfree squash is miles better for you – and much more refreshing.

8 9

7

PACKED LUNCH OVER BUYING IN

Put together a salad, a tasty wrap or mug of soup to take to work rather than popping out for a sausage roll or mayo-laden sandwich. Better for your waistline AND your bank balance.

SUGARY CEREAL FOR PORRIDGE

A warming bowl of porridge topped with honey, raisins and cinnamon is tastier and more filling than the sugar-packed cereals that fill your kitchen cupboards.

WHITE FOR WHOLEMEAL

White bread, white rice, white pasta – tastes great, but it’s had all the essential nutrients, like fibre, removed. Wholemeal options are miles healthier, and more filling, so you won’t need to eat as much either.

10

FINISHING ON TIME FOR WORKING LATE

We’ve all done it – but putting in extra hours at work does nothing for productivity or your mental health. So get organised, plan out your days more effectively and vow to leave the office on time as often as you can. Your family will thank you for it.

STRIPPED Revenge Porn In a digital world, is it any surprise that forms of violence against women are reaching the world wide web? Cases of so-called ‘revenge porn’ have increased in recent years, forcing a change in the law to tackle such abuse. Is this enough? We spoke to one survivor to find out 28

A

sk yourself – have you ever sent explicit images to your other half? Do you have pics of them? Even in trusting relationships, the act of sharing intimate images without consent has become worryingly common. Revenge porn, or image-based abuse, is the distribution of naked or sexual images via internet platforms, including social media or dedicated revenge porn websites – without the subject’s consent. Falling victim to this can bring up an array of emotions.

REAL-LIFE

them without me even knowing – you can see that my eyes are shut in the pictures.” Having been in a controlling relationship, Kelly explains that her former partner had pressured her into taking an intimate image. “I had quite a volatile relationship where it was violent on his part,” she says. “What people don’t understand is he threatened to end our relationship if I didn’t send him pictures.” Marsha Scott, CEO of Scottish Women’s Aid, says that people need to understand that revenge porn is a form of domestic abuse. She explains: “I think it’s really important to understand that revenge porn – we try not to use that phrase because it’s not about revenge and it’s not about porn – is another form of domestic abuse in most cases. It’s about power, control and humiliation.”

LOSS OF TRUST “I woke up to messages from a girl telling me to contact her. She forwarded me on pictures that [my ex-partner] had sent to her friend. I saw them and I contacted him straight away – he claimed that was the only person he sent them to. In the coming days, I heard from more and more people and that’s when I got the police involved,” recalls Kelly McGurk, whose former partner, Jamie Leitch, shared explicit images of her on messaging platforms. Waiving her right to anonymity, Kelly is coming forward to speak about her experience of being a survivor of revenge porn. The images shared of Kelly had not even been taken with her consent, which is also common in imagebased abuse. “I don’t know why he did it. It wasn’t until I looked at the pictures there was only one picture that I had sent him,” Kelly explains. “The rest, he had taken

LAW CHANGE Scotland recently changed the law surrounding revenge porn to make it a criminal offence that can carry up to a five-year custodial sentence. “I actually asked the police for advice and they told me it was an offence and it was taken from there,” says Kelly about her experience. In September, Kenneth Robinson was the first person to be convicted under the new law for threatening to share images of his former partner. Kelly’s former partner, Jamie, could have faced jail time for his offence – but instead, he was put on the Sex Offenders’ Register for 18 months, will have to carry out 250 hours’ of unpaid work over nine months, and pay Kelly £500 in compensation. It is hoped that this will be the start of justice for those who have had their images shared unknowingly. However, uploading photos like this is still extremely easy. Typing ‘revenge porn’ into Google reveals websites ‘guiding’ users on how to get revenge on their ex. “Where is the responsibility of the ISPs and the internet platforms and the social media businesses like Twitter, Snapchat and Facebook in all of this? Something has to be done to regulate their power,” says Marsha. WHAT NEXT? As the government takes steps to clamp down on revenge porn, Scottish Women’s Aid – and their sister organisation Engender – are working to ensure women can exercise their human rights when it comes to online abuse. In a fast-paced digital world, it is worrying to see the increase of abuse towards women, and occasionally men, online and across social media platforms.

“Revenge porn is another form of domestic abuse in most cases – it’s about control and coercion and power” Marsha Scott, Scottish Women’s Aid

With sentencing only considered if images are explicit, it is hard to tell if the updated law will affect the number of revenge porn cases. This should not deter victims from seeking support, as Kelly says: “Go to the police straight away, 100 per cent. I’ve had a few negative comments. But what I choose to send when I’m in a relationship is my choice – it’s my body and I can send what I want. What people are not grasping is that the majority of the pictures, I didn’t know he had. They were taken without my consent.” Marsha adds: “The first thing is don’t blame yourself. This is someone who is victimising you and you have rights. You have international human rights. You have legal rights in Scotland. This is a crime and you should get some information and help. Call our helpline or contact a local Rape Crisis or local Women’s Aid and get some advice. Don’t go through this alone.” Ensure you gather enough evidence when going to the police, from messages to screenshots of images. The more material the police have to work with, the better chance of a stricter conviction. A former partner or current partner sharing intimate images without your consent is wrong. It is abuse. There is no other motivation – it is not revenge, but it is a way of controlling a person. Luckily, there are organisations on hand to support victims, from going to the police to getting the images removed and the law is on your side. Your body means your choices.

BUTTERSCOTCH AND APPLE OATY CRUMBLE There’s nothing more comforting than a crumble – and Mackie’s have got just the recipe to team up with their fantastic ice cream PREP TIME: 2.5 HOURS (OR 45 MINS IF USING READY-MADE CARAMEL) SERVES 4

Sauce 450g Bramley apples 200g tin condensed milk Good pinch of cinnamon 50g butter 50g demerara sugar For the topping 120g chilled butter 125g white granulated sugar 125g soft dark brown sugar 125g Hamlyns Scottish porridge oats 120g plain flour

First, gently boil the can of condensed milk in a large lidded pan of water. This turns the condensed milk into caramel. It will take about 2 hours, boiling gently. Keep topping up the water to make sure the can is covered at all times. Remove and allow to cool before opening. If you don’t have time to make your own caramel, you can use a jar of ready-made caramel instead. For the crumble topping, mix together all the ingredients apart from the oats until you get what resembles fine breadcrumbs, then add the oats. Using your hands, squeeze the mixture to form a ball, then break it into small pieces again. This will ensure your crumble topping has texture once cooked.

Peel the apples, remove their core and cut into 2cm chunks. Heat a heavy-based saucepan on the stove, melt the butter then add the apples, sugar and cinnamon. Cook gently for 5-6 minutes till the apples start to soften slightly. Remove from the heat and allow to continue to cook in their own heat for 3-4 minutes then chill. Once chilled, spoon a third of the apples into the serving dish and top with half of the caramel. Repeat this process, finishing with the final layer of apples. Top with the crumble mix and place into the oven at 170ºC for 10-15 minutes until the crumble is golden brown and cooked through. Serve with a double scoop of Mackie’s ice cream!

AUTUMN AFFOGATO A quick and impressive afterdinner treat... SERVES 4

200ml made-up hot strong espresso coffee Mackie’s Caramel Biscotti Ice Cream

1. Make the espresso coffee, which will be enough for 4 little after-dinner coffee cups. 2. Put the ice cream into 4 dessert glasses or cups. Drown (the literal meaning of affogato) each with coffee and serve while warm and melting. Check out the full Mackie’s range at www.mackies.co.uk

FOSTERING Fostering is an incredible way to offer support, care and love to young people who may come from complicated backgrounds. We discovered what it is like to work as a foster carer

38

E

very day, families across Scotland welcome a young person into their home for short or prolonged periods of time. Foster carers have a lot of responsibility to be a provider, confidante, and security blanket to assist a child placed into their care. Foster With Edinburgh work closely with foster carers to ensure the best is provided for children and young people.

DIVERSITY

Daniel Davies* has been fostering since 2004 after he was encouraged to apply by his son, Brad. “Fostering had always been in my head but because I’m gay, away back then I never had the courage to do it – I thought they would never take a gay person. Silly enough, but that’s how I thought,” he explains. Similarly, Claire Lennon* had always considered fostering, and after meeting recruiters during her son’s parents’ evening, Claire made a phone call. She has now been happily fostering children under the age of

four for seven years. “I said I would like to do babies and that was fine. That would have been eight-and-a-half years ago from the very first phone call. My own are now 15 and 11, and I take anyone up to four, that is my remit. It’s busy – definitely busy,” adds Claire. “Our foster carers come from all sorts of backgrounds and each brings their own unique experience to the role. Whatever their ethnicity, religion sexual orientation, cultural background – if applicants are over 21 years old, they may be eligible,” says Foster With Edinburgh team manager Neil Bruce.

LEARNING TO LOVE

There is no denying that fostering comes with a lot of responsibility. Looking after a child who may initially be scared and confused, combined with working alongside their birth family to improve parenting and role model skills – fostering is a full-time job. Caring for young people can be

FAMILY

challenging, but it’s also extremely rewarding, as Claire explains: “There is no other job at all for me. The basis of your job is to help these children form an attachment so they can go on and have a healthy attachment to their parents or new parents. You’re technically teaching children how to love.” Foster With Edinburgh provide competitive fees, allowances and financial support to ensure carers can comfortably provide for the needs of the children and young people. Fostering is a commitment, and after being accepted as a carer, the team at Foster With Edinburgh ensure they are on hand for support. “We provide a range of support to our foster carers to help them provide the best possible care for the children and young people they look after. Foster caring is very much about teamwork, and open, clear communication between social workers and carers is essential,” says Neil.

INVOLVED

It doesn’t matter the mistakes they have made, that’s still their mum

Daniel Davies, Foster Carer

Communication is imperative to ensure everyone is on the same page. Including birth parents in the fostering process is important for them to improve the life of a young person and improve the life of their parents. Daniel and his partner Greg had previously looked after siblings Eilidh and Mark, and spent a lot of time with their mum to help better their situation. “When we had Eilidh and Mark here for the year, we got so attached to them, but it was fantastic because we got them back with their mum. It was brilliant, the change in their mum, and because we worked with her closely, the kids were happy because they see that you’re a friend to their mum,” says Daniel. “It does break your heart [when they leave] but you do get excited because that parent has made a change.” Keeping birth parents included in

decisions is crucial but carers understand that sometimes the reason a child has been taken into care can be traumatic. Claire explains: “It is an incredibly rewarding job but you will have to deal with a lot of difficult circumstances. You will have to work closely with the parents and sometimes the parents will have done something, and you’re going to have to be able to work with the parents in a non-judgemental way.”

FAMILY BOND

Working to ensure parents are included in the fostering process, Daniel makes sure to send school reports and photos, a nice gesture that is appreciated by everyone. “That just keeps them involved – it doesn’t matter the mistakes they have made, that’s still their mum,” adds Daniel. There is no denying that when you welcome a child or young person into your home, a great bond will be made. When a child returns home or gets adopted it can be bittersweet, but Claire says that it’s lovely when the young people can keep in touch. “In my opinion, it is completely up to the parents [if they stay in contact],” explains Claire. “I had one adoptive family invite us to the naming ceremony for their son and that was very emotional for us.” Fostering can be seen as one of the most enriching and emotional jobs on offer, but there is no doubt it is worth it to see a young person happy. Taking a child from a troubled background and helping them get back on their feet to regain their confidence is certainly a role like no other. SAVE ENERGY – SAVE CASH!

If your stomach lurches when your energy bill pops through your door, don’t worry – there are a few tricks you can employ to save a stack of cash, and become more energy-efficient too Family Life - Autumn/Winter 2017

FINANCE

T

he papers have been packed with stories of energy suppliers upping their prices. During the summer, British Gas announced that they were raising their electricity tariffs by 12.5% – adding an extra £76 a year onto a typical dual-fuel bill. That’s £76 that a lot of customers would rather keep for themselves – especially with (whisper it) Christmas looming. But as other energy suppliers follow suit, it can seem almost impossible to get your bills down, especially as we’re cranking up our heating and having to switch on lights as the colder, darker days draw in. Thankfully, all hope is not lost. There are lots of clever tricks you can employ – from larger structural changes to your home to smaller lifestyle alterations – which can curb your energy use and cut your bills too. ASSESSMENT “We would recommend first of all that you look at the house as a whole,” explains Ruth Gray from Energy Saving Trust Scotland. “One of the best ways you can start is to do a home energy check, which is a questionnaire on the Energy Saving Trust website. You give general details about your property, and it’ll give you a little report – recommendations on ways you can make your home warmer and reduce your bills. You can either get a digital report or have it posted out to you.” It may be the case that your home requires a few upgrades. You lose a quarter of the heat from your home through the roof. Making sure your loft is properly insulated is a good starting point, as well as wall insulation and making sure your heating system is fully functioning and up-to-date.

SAVE SAVE SAVE!

You can save between £100 and £300 a year by changing energy suppliers – so it’s definitely worthwhile investigating “The Scottish Government actually funds an interest-free loan of up to £32,000 to help households install those measures,” Ruth says. “They can seem expensive to do, but with the savings that you make on them – they pay for themselves really quickly, and many times over. The interest-free loan takes away the up-front cost for things like loft insulation – the cost of installing it is probably about £300, but you save £135 a year.” SWITCH It’s also worthwhile changing energy supplier. While prices are going up, there are still deals to be had. While, once upon a time, there were only five energy providers in the UK, these days there are over 80 – so the marketplace has become more competitive. “It’s an easy thing to do if you’ve got access to the internet – you can go on a lot of different price comparison sites to check online,” Ruth says. “Our main tip would be to check based on your usage, not your monthly cost. The amount you pay every month isn’t necessarily related to the amount you’re using. It’s more accurate if you’re able to look at your most recent bill.” When you switch, all you have to do

Here’s how much a few simple lifestyle changes can save you – it all adds up...

Reducing your heating by one degree SAVE £80 a year

Installing a chimney draught excluder SAVE £15 a year

Turning off lights when not in use SAVE £14 a year

One washing machine cycle a week SAVE £5 a year

Turning appliances off standby SAVE £30 a year

Using a washing up bowl rather than leaving the tap running SAVE £25 a year

Boiling only the water you need in the kettle SAVE £7 a year

Spending one minute less in the shower a day SAVE £7 a year

Doing all of these things could save you an average of £183!

42

is supply up-to-date meter readings, your basic details, and the suppliers do the rest. Give your new supplier a note of your meter serial numbers too, just to make sure nothing goes awry in the switch process. You could save between £100 and £300 a year by changing suppliers – so it’s definitely worthwhile investigating. There are some clever gadgets on the market too which can really change your thinking around energy use. Smart meters, which are mainly designed to send your energy use straight to your supplier rather than asking you to provide readings, are making us all a bit more energy-savvy. You can see exactly how much energy you’re using, and it translates that into how much you’re spending each day. Smart heating controls are becoming more common too. These enable you to control your heating from an app on your smartphone, tablet or on a computer. The big bonus is that you can switch your heating off or on at any time – so if your plans change, your heating won’t come on at its usual time. CHANGES Being more energy-conscious can also save you money. There are lots of simple lifestyle changes you can introduce at home – for starters, your heating only needs to be between 18 and 21 degrees, so turn down the temperature. “Another big one would be not leaving things on standby,” Ruth says. “Especially if you’ve got older appliances that use quite a lot of energy while they’re on standby. There are basic draught-proofing things that you can do too, like closing the curtains before it gets dark. Looking at your doors and windows to make sure they aren’t letting in any unwanted draughts. Try lining your curtains to keep the heat in too.” If you’d like more advice on how you can save energy, the Home Energy Scotland advice network is a great port of call. Offering free, impartial advice on everything from home upgrades to renewable energy, as well as information on grants and loans to help you out, their trained advisors tailor everything to you and your needs – so they’re definitely worth a call. Small changes can make a big difference to your energy spend – meaning a little extra cash to treat yourself amidst the doom and gloom of winter... From their very first day, Wellington pupils become part of a family dating back to 1836. Much has changed since then, but emphasis is still placed on the individual and the Wellington community continues to grow and strengthen both in terms of pupil experience and academic excellence. Visit us to find out how Ayrshire’s only independent school encourages and supports every child to reach their full potential. wellingtonschool.org
