Driving MIKE NEWMAN Adrenaline, a need for speed and ambition run through his veins – and as the current holder of the impressive title of fastest blind man on the planet, Mike Newman has not let his disability hold him back
H
ow did you first get involved with motorsports? I was born blind, but from a very young age I had a keen interest in motorsport. I got tired of saying to myself, ‘If I could see, I would buy that car.’ I thought, what if I just tried it anyway? When you get to that point of ‘what if’, you soon move onto, ‘why don’t you?’ So I did. I was able to enjoy the experience of riding a motorcycle on my own, connected to a co-rider through a radio link. A couple of years later I was able to enjoy the phenomenal experience of driving a high-performance motorcar. What does it feel like to be the fastest blind man on the planet? I have to pinch myself! It’s great, it’s fun. I enjoy the exhilaration of breaking the record. Since I did the last water speed record, people are asking me what’s next. For the first time in a long time, I say, ‘I don’t know yet.’ Usually I’m chasing a particular ambition for years. I’ve always had a goal I wanted to achieve, but now I’ve achieved the ones I set out to. I enjoy driving the cars I’ve driven. I’ve probably driven more high-performance cars than people who can see have driven,
4
and I’ve enjoyed every minute of that experience. Congratulations on your recent water speed record! Tell us a little bit more about that. Some little boys want to be racing drivers, and I was one of those little boys – pain in the neck for me though, because I couldn’t see. As I got the chance to drive cars, quickly I thought, if I’m going to be a racing driver, I have to be driving at 200mph plus. I set myself a personal goal. I wanted to be the first blind person unaccompanied – and that’s an important factor – to take a car over 200mph and I wanted to take a powerboat over 100mph. Now I have managed both. You are one of the co-founders of Speed

INTERVIEW
if your feet are working you can use a pedal and if they’re not you can use hand controls. It was a very deliberate process to say it would be an open-top car. Then I moved on to think it would need dual control. Some people are going to manage a bit more than others or work with the instructor in a different way – the cars are always going to have instructors in them. I came up with the idea that we would have another steering wheel so the instructor could steer the car if required. Six years later, we have three vehicles, and I’m looking to start a collection for our fourth vehicle. Do you have any future plans for Speed of Sight? Our ambition is to deliver our second buggy and then we will start fundraising to build another race car. We’re always looking at ways of improving the controls we put in them, and we are lucky now to be able to offer events up and down the country. We’re constantly looking for opportunities to run the cars at different venues. We are lucky we find venues with kind souls who run them, and donate a day, or two, or three, or four a year for us. This year is exciting as it’s probably our busiest – we have been up and down the country and we’ve also got dates coming together for next season.
The best part of motorsports for me is when you’ve got your hands on the wheel and you drop the clutch and the car roars into life. It’s me that’s doing that; it’s me the car is responding to
of Sight, a motorsports charity. What prompted you to start the charity? When I did my first car record way back in 2003, I started to meet a significant amount of people with disabilities who said they wished they could still drive, and wished they could get behind the wheel again. I started mulling over in my mind how I could give them that excitement again. People can have driving days with Speed of Sight in racing cars. What makes the cars suitable for a disabled person? I came up with an idea – to make it fun, there would need to be an open-top car. Meaning it’s very tactile, it’s very auditory and it’s very sensory. You’ve got your ears listening, your eyes looking – if you’ve got any sight – you’ve got your nose smelling,
Having already achieved such incredible success, is there anything else you would like to try? I would like to fly a jet – to fly a jet supersonic, that would be great. If they would let me [fly a jet solo], most definitely. If they let me do that, I would be there, without a shadow of a doubt. What is the best part of motorsports? The best part of motorsports, for me, is when you’ve got your hands on the wheel and you drop the clutch and the car roars into life. It’s me that’s doing that; it’s me the car is responding to – it’s not me sat in the passenger seat whilst someone else does it. It’s me making the engine rev, the tyres scream. The moment the car pulls off is the most exciting bit. Speed of Sight provides driving days across the UK suitable for people of all abilities. ADVICE AND SUPPORT
UNDERSTANDING
MOTABILITY
Car ownership is expensive – which is why the Motability Scheme exists, handing over the keys to independence to disabled people and carers across the country. We answer your most frequently asked questions about the Scheme What is Motability? Motability is the UK-wide affordable car leasing scheme for disabled people, where those in receipt of certain welfare benefits can lease a brand new car for three years at a time. Don’t need a car? You can exchange your benefits for a powerchair or mobility scooter too. Who’s eligible? If you’re in receipt of the higher rate mobility component of DLA, the enhanced rate of the mobility component of PIP, War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement or Armed Forces Independence Payment, you can swap your weekly payment for a car, powerchair or scooter. How does it work? Each Motability vehicle is priced using two components – your weekly allowance and an Advance Payment. The weekly allowance refers to the qualifying benefit – it may be all or part of this. And the Advance Payment is an extra, one-off, up-front payment which is used for larger, more expensive cars or higher spec models. What do you get? As well as your car, you’ll get insurance, breakdown assistance, servicing and maintenance – all you need to worry about is paying for fuel. What kind of car can you get? The choice is yours! Most major manufacturers, from Ford to BMW, are signed up to the Scheme, and offer a variety of different motors. While not every model, trim level and engine is available through Motability, you do have a good selection, so you’re guaranteed to find something that meets your needs and preferences, whether that’s a nippy small car for town driving or something 6
more robust to handle motorways or country roads. What about adaptations? There are a number of adaptations available through Motability, many of which can be made free of charge. Available adaptations range from simple driving controls through to hoists. It’s worth noting that not all adaptations will suit or fit in every type of car, so if you’ll need adaptations made, speak with your Motability dealer to see what model would best suit your needs. Can I get a wheelchair-accessible vehicle through Motability? You can. Wheelchair accessible vehicles – specially adapted van-style cars which can transport a wheelchair user in their chair – are available through the Scheme. All WAVs have an Advance Payment component, which is non-refundable. Is there any financial support available? If you need help with the extra costs, Motability, the charity, may be able to offer funding and grants to help you get the vehicle which is best suited to your needs. Find out more at www.motability.org.uk. Where can I find out more? Head to the Motability website, call the team, head along to one of the Motability events that take place throughout the year, or pop into your nearest Motability dealer for more information.

There are three engines to choose from on Motability – the 1.5T EcoBoost petrol, 2.0 EcoBoost petrol and the 1.5 Duratorq TDCi diesel, with both manual and automatic options. The 1.5-litre petrol feels fast, while the 236 BHP 2.0 petrol feels more powerful. It handles well for a large car too, taking twists and turns with ease. It glides over bumps in the road, and the steering is light. The real downside with the Mondeo is its running costs – average annual fuel costs come in at £954.

Equipment Motability customers have four trim levels to choose from – the Zetec, Zetec ECOnetic, Titanium and Titanium ECOnetic. The Zetec is a good choice, coming with electronic folding door mirrors, electric rear windows, a heated windscreen, and a height-adjustable passenger seat. It also has an eight-inch colour touch-screen, USB connectivity, air conditioning and cruise control. Upgrade to the Titanium and gain Lane Keeping System, Traffic Sign Recognition and sports-style front seats.

The Optima is just as stylish as classmates like the Octavia and Superb from Skoda
Based on Kia Optima 1.7CRDi 2 4dr Fuel: Diesel Brake horsepower: 139 BHP Average mpg: 67.30 mpg CO2 emissions: 110 g/km Motability customers: Total weekly allowance + £1,499 Advance Payment
On the road There are just two trims on Motability – the 2 and 3 – and one engine, the 1.7-litre 139 BHP diesel. It’s a decent option though – while it’s a bit noisy inside, Kia claim it can go from 0-62 mph in 10 seconds. This does take a bit of work, though. If you’re after a sporty ride, this isn’t the car for you. Bonus? It’s cheap to run – it’s got an annual fuel cost of £639 a year, great for a diesel.
Inside The Optima looks great – outside and in. The update on the previous Optima offers a more stylish dash, and all trim levels get a leather steering wheel and gear shift, and faux leather armrests. It’s also huge. Legroom is abundant, with plenty of headspace, and in the boot, you’ve got 510 litres of space for stowing away your shopping and all your kit – much smaller than the Superb, but still plenty of room for a busy family.
Equipment All versions of the Optima come with cruise control, auto dimming mirrors and seat height adjustment. Step up to the Optima 3 and you get electric seats. The entry-level 2 comes with a seven-inch touch-screen, while it upgrades to eight inches with the 3. Both models have sat-nav, Bluetooth, a DAB radio, and a USB socket for plugging in your phone. Front and rear parking sensors are standard, along with a reversing camera.
SKODA
www.skoda.co.uk/Motability
On the road You have 15 different trim and engine combinations through Motability, from the 1.4-litre petrol to a 2.0-litre diesel. Amongst the engines, the diesels offer the better drive, but the 2.0-litre 217 BHP petrol gives them a run for their money. Driving-wise? It’s not the most fun you’ll have behind the wheel of a family car, but the handling is safe and secure with no surprises.
Inside In the cabin, you’ll be pushed to believe how much room there is. Up front, two adults will fit comfortably, and in the back?

It’s amongst the best in its class for legroom. The driver has the luxury of a steering wheel that can be adjusted in any direction, while the dashboard is well laidout, and visibility is good.
Equipment
Even the entry-level S Superb has plenty of kit, including a five-inch touch-screen system, DAB radio, air conditioning and 16-inch alloys. If you want a little extra though, take a step up to the SE, where you’ll get rear parking sensors, a 6.5-inch touch-screen and even an umbrella in each front door. The high-end SE L Exec comes with built-in sat-nav, but the midrange is better value.

Accessible Caravans, motorhomes and accessibility don’t tend to go hand-in-hand – not without the right team behind them anyway. We find out about what’s going on in the industry to make a holiday on the road a reality for everyone
W
hether it’s childhood memories of towing your caravan to a beachside park or dreams of touring Europe in a motorhome in your retirement, lots of us have got a certain attachment to the idea of holidays on the open road. In fact, figures estimate that there could be as many as 50,000 new motorhomes and caravans on the UK’s roads within five years – taking the figure to 807,000 – as touring holidays grow in popularity. OPEN TO ALL And it’s not something that you have to miss out on if you have a disability. Traditionally, caravans, campervans and motorhomes are cramped, with as much as possible squeezed into a small space, but across the UK, companies are starting to make the motorhome holiday open to all. “We design each of our motorhomes, or caravans, for the individual wheelchair user,” explains Kate Birch, commercial director for Coachbuilt GB, the UK’s specialist manufacturer of wheelchair accessible motorhomes. “In theory, we never do two the same. We start our adaptation process, and we base them
12
on standard volume-produced caravans and motorhomes. We use product brands such as Swift, Auto-Trail and Lunar. We take the items that need creating, or making wheelchair accessible, and we integrate the healthcare equipment and the independent living equipment that you need to make a standard model wheelchair accessible.” Caravans and motorhomes can be adapted in a variety of ways, to include wide doors, lifts, wet rooms, hoists, respiratory and feeding equipment and even specialist beds – anything the customer requires really. The possibilities are endless – and Coachbuilt won the Queen’s Award for Innovation this year as a result. RANGE “There’s never been an opportunity where we’ve not been able to do something the customer has asked for,” Kate says. “Because we’ve got such a wide range of base models to choose from, we don’t just start with one and you like it or lump it. Even if we can get everything right but the budget’s restrictive, we’ll look at procuring and doing it on a second-hand basis.” The real beauty of having your own

ON THE ROAD
adapted motorhome, Kate says, is that it’s tailored to your needs – you don’t have to worry about booking into a hotel and being disappointed by the reality, or trouble family with your access needs. You can take your accommodation with you wherever you go, whether that’s in the UK or further afield. “Feedback from customers is always very positive,” Kate says. “Normally it’s the confidence that they get after speaking to us, understanding that we can achieve what they need. And, most importantly, when they’ve actually used the vehicle, it’s how life-changing the vehicle becomes. It allows them to feel more independent, more spontaneous and it allows them to travel a bit further, stay a bit longer, and it opens up not just the UK but Europe. “It’s a cost-effective way of travel. And it opens up so much more. You don’t have this fear that you sometimes have a with hotel – the grab rails are in the wrong place, there’s a shower over the bath, the bed’s way too high. When you know it’s been built for you, it allows the planning to be the nice bit. Where do we stay? Where are we going to eat? You can enjoy that.” TRY IT OUT If you aren’t in the position to purchase an adapted vehicle yourself, caravan parks across the country are starting to offer adapted accommodation with standard adaptations in static caravans. The likes of Haven (www. haven.com) and Parkdean Holidays (www.parkdeanholidays.co.uk), for instance, have accessible facilities – so you could even go along, try it out and see if it’s something you’d like to invest in. Coachbuilt too offer motorhome hire, letting you head off wherever you fancy. The caravan holiday is a great British tradition – and there’s no reason why you should miss out. So start making enquiries, see what’s available near you and make some plans! It could be the road to something magical. i

NEW ADVENTURES FOR CHARLIE
When it comes to accessible motorhomes, there is a good range on the market. Conversion specialists Brook Miller Mobility have recently produced a great version – and it’s ticking all the boxes for one family Brook Miller Mobility have teamed up with RP Motorhomes to design and produce a brand new wheelchair accessible motorhome with the option of an additional wheelchair accessible tow car. Brook Miller has a large mobility superstore in Elland, West Yorkshire, as well as the workshop where the standard motorhomes and a range of other vehicles (mainly Fiat Qubos, Vauxhall Vivaros, Renault Trafics and Volkswagen Caravelles, Transporters, and Caddys) are converted to make them wheelchair accessible, plus a range of other adaptations. Their latest addition is the Liberation motorhome. Brook Miller specialise in home demonstrations anywhere in the UK with one of their experienced consultants. This summer, managing director Adrian Westbrook set off to Surrey to see Charlie and his family with the Liberation. “They were interested in the Liberation as they travel more and more to their other home in France,” Adrian explains. “On arrival, I was greeted by Charlie’s parents, Michelle and Gerry. We had a good look around the Liberation. It was perfect for their needs and with a few customised mods to make it easier for Charlie, they decided to order their new adapted motorhome that will be specially built for Charlie. It was a 500-mile round trip but worth every minute when you see the smile on everybody’s faces.” Michelle says: “This is fantastic and will change our lives.”

Fiat’s Tipo hatchback is here to give the VW Golf a run for its money, offering loads of space and great value
On the road There are 14 different trim and engine combinations to choose from on Motability, ranging from the 95 BHP 1.4-litre Easy with zero Advance Payment up to the 120 BHP 1.6-litre Lounge diesel, which asks for an Advance Payment of £2,750. The 120 BHP 1.4-litre offers the smoothest drive, but it is only offered as a six-speed manual. It doesn’t grip the road quite as well as other cars in the class, but the heavy steering can be lightened at the touch of the City button.
Inside Cabin space is the big selling point for the Tipo. There’s heaps of room both in the front and back – good news if you’re transporting a car full of adults. Most models also come with the ability to adjust the steering wheel for height and reach,
so it’s easy to get a driving position that suits you. However, for adjustable lumbar support, you’ll need to opt for the top-spec Lounge model. It boasts an easy-to-read centre console, and an easy-to-use five-inch infotainment screen on all bar the base model. The best news? In the boot, you’ll find 440 litres of space.
Equipment The base model, Easy, comes with 15inch steel wheels, chrome handles, air con, DAB digital radio and Bluetooth, USB connections, as well as cruise control as standard. The next step up, the Easy Plus, gains features like 16-inch alloys, rear parking sensors, leather steering wheel and the infotainment screen. The top-range Lounge offers 17-inch alloys, rear-view camera, sat-nav and climate control.

On the road
Through Motability, you’ve got 12 petrols and seven diesels to pick from, and you’ve got both manual and automatic options, so there’s plenty of choice to meet your preferences. The 1.2-litre Flair trim will cost you an average of £696 a year to run, which is definitely purse-friendly. The 1.2-litre turbo petrol is the best of the bunch, and good for motorway journeys. While not the most exciting drive, it is comfortable, smooth and quiet on the road.
Inside
Citroën designed the front seats of the Cactus with comfort in mind, going for a sofa-like feel. It’s great at first, but it isn’t so good for your posture. Definitely test drive this one if support is key. On the plus 16
side, there’s loads of room inside the cabin, you can adjust the height of the steering wheel and the boot is big – 358 litres in fact, so there’s heaps of room there for a folded wheelchair, equipment, and all the bits and bobs a busy family requires.
Equipment
The Flair, which is the most affordable option for Motability customers, comes with all the bells and whistles of the base Touch model and next step Feel – including seven-inch Touch Drive interface, air con and Bluetooth system and media streaming – as well as heated door mirrors, City Camera Pack, dark tinted windows and 17-inch alloys. Take a step up to the Flair Edition, and you’ll get yourself the bonus of a panoramic sunroof too.
One of the best things about the Leon is the variety. There are lots of different engines to choose from, from a nippy 1.0 TSI Ecomotive up to the 2.0 TDI. The 1.4 petrols are great for long-distance drivers, while the 1.8 has a sportier feel. In the diesels, the 1.6 is probably the best drive, while the 2.0 is really smooth – running costs are higher though. In all the engines, ride and handling is amongst the best in its class.
Inside
Most models have a clear central infotainment screen, and all but the base model come with an eight-inch monitor. The rest of the dials are easy to read, the controls straight-forward to use, and all but the entry-point S come with adjustable lumbar support. Space-wise, this is a roomy ride, with a 380-litre boot.
Equipment
All trim levels for the Leon come with air conditioning as standard, as well as touch-screen infotainment and DAB digital radio. The next level up from the base, SE Technology, adds cruise control, height adjustment for the two front seats and adjustable lumbar support, while the SE Dynamic Technology has larger alloys and rear parking sensors too. The top of the range FR, meanwhile, has a sportier feel, including 18-inch alloy wheels and a leather steering wheel. The SE Technology is probably best value.

The pint-sized 108 is a familiar sight on the road – a firm favourite with drivers who have just passed their test or those after something compact for city driving. The real bonus of the 108 is that it’s cheap to run – you’ll be spending an average of £651 a year on fuel. The downside is its size – you’re pushed to get two adults in the back, and the boot holds just 196 litres. You’ve got a choice of two petrol engines – the 1.0 and the 1.2. There isn’t much between the two, so if you’re looking

The 108 is a compact car with plenty of attitude and real driveability
to save some cash, go for the cheaper 1.0. With light steering and less noise inside than many of its rivals, it’s a good choice if you’re after a small car.
The Viva’s 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine comes with a five-speed manual gearbox (there’s no automatic available here) – and it delivers a smooth ride for city driving. You might want to step away from this dinky drive for country roads, though. There are four models available through Motability, and it costs just £50 in weekly rental for the base model – but it doesn’t look like a budget car. It’s got a great quality interior for its more affordable pricing, and the entry-level SE comes with adjustable door mirrors and audio controls on the steering wheel. The boot holds just 206 litres, so it’s not the best choice if you have to transport lots of equipment – but if you’re after a nippy little run-around? This could be worth investigating.

For a car that’s as happy offroad as it is cruising down the motorway, what about an SUV?
SUZUKI
cars.suzuki.co.uk/Cars/Motability
You’ve got plenty to choose from on Motability – 26 different trim and engine combinations, in fact. There are just the two engines on offer though, a 1.6-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel. The petrol is the better pick – it’s a bit more responsive. The Vitara offers a good drive, handling well and taking corners with ease. The driver will find a good driving position, and there’s lots of room for adjustment. The dashboard is fairly straightforward, and the
cabin is pretty roomy too. There’s enough space in the Vitara for four adults, but headroom in the back is a little bit tight. The boot is decent too for its size, at 375 litres. All trim levels are well kitted-out. The entrylevel Z4 comes with lots as standard, including cruise control, DAB radio, USB connectivity and Bluetooth, air conditioning and LED daytime running lights, but upgrade to the Z-T and you’ll get sat-nav and 17-inch alloys.
While smaller than others in its class, the Vitara delivers on style

You have four different trim levels to choose from on Motability – S, SE, SE Nav and Premium – and a decent selection of petrol and diesel engines too, both manual and automatic. The 1.7-litre diesel is the best of the bunch, but take it up to the 2.0-litre if you’re after something with a bit more oomph. Out on the road, it’s a decent drive – but the suspension is fairly stiff, so brace yourself on bumps. Inside, you’ve got a great driving position, and there’s plenty of options to adjust for the best fit. There’s lots of space, plenty of legroom in the back, and the boot is an impressive 513 litres. Even the entry-level S comes with lots of equipment as standard, including air con, electric windows, Bluetooth, DAB radio and electric heated door windows as standard. The SE Nav adds climate and cruise control, rear parking sensors and, of course, sat-nav.

SELF-DRIVING CARS:
WHEN SCIENCE FICTION BECOMES REALITY For years, we’ve been hearing rumblings of autonomous vehicles coming to our roads, but most of us wrote it off as the stuff of fantasy – until now. Self-driving cars are very much on their way – we found out what these technological advances could mean for people with disabilities
S
itting behind the wheel of a car is one of the most freeing things a person can do. With tonnes of metal and engineering work in your control, you simply need to start the ignition and the world is your oyster. There’s a proportion of society, however, who won’t get to feel this freedom. People with certain medical conditions and disabilities aren’t legally allowed to get behind the wheel of a car on public roads – something which is a source of frustration for many. But technology could have a solution for that. After years of research, trials and exciting developments, the muchtalked-about driverless car is on its way to becoming a feature on the UK’s roads – and it could, one day, be just the ticket for people with visual impairments or certain neurological conditions who currently have to rely on others for transport. “We believe a revolutionary concept
26
like autonomous drive will have huge implications for the design, construction and operation of cars,” explains Ponz Pandikuthira, vice president of product planning at Nissan Europe. “In the future, it will mean less input from the driver, and for older people or those with disabilities, autonomous drive offers another benefit: true independence and mobility for all.” MAKING WAVES Nissan, alongside the likes of Google and Volvo, are amongst the big names making waves with this type of technology. The Japanese company is slowly but surely introducing autonomous features into its new models, with more and more smart technology making appearances. “We are taking a phased approach and introducing our ‘intelligent driving’ technologies feature by feature,” explains Ponz. “The building block of our system, Nissan’s ProPILOT autonomous drive
technology, is available in our cars today. This first phase technology controls the steering, braking and acceleration when driving in a single-lane on the highway. ProPILOT will be available in Europe in our new Qashqai from 2018, and in our new Nissan LEAF in the near future.” Nissan took a prototype of their driverless LEAF motor out for a first test-run on London roads this spring with members of the press to demonstrate how the autonomous drive function copes on real roads – with real obstacles, and, perhaps most importantly, other drivers. PREDICT Because that’s the main issue – a driverless car with all the right kit can’t always predict what pedestrians, cyclists, other drivers or even the weather will do. With the technology as it stands, a licensed driver is still needed behind the wheel to step in if things go wrong – but the brains behind the

Autonomous drive will have huge implications – for older people or for those with disabilities, it offers true independence and mobility for all Ponz Pandikuthira, vice president of product planning, Nissan Europe
scenes reckon we could eventually reach a fully-autonomous design, and are working to make the robotics ‘learn’ how to cope with sudden changes. Autonomous vehicles make use of lasers, cameras and GPS technology to map out routes and identify hazards along the way. The theory is that, one day, you’ll be able to hop in your car, tell it where you want to go, and arrive at your destination, fuss-free. “The autonomous drive capabilities of our Nissan vehicles are delivered via our ever-evolving suite of ProPILOT technology,” Ponz says. “This consists of technologies such as a millimetre wave radar, laser scanners, cameras, high-speed computer chips, and a specialized HMI (Human Machine Interface), just to name a few. All of these help the vehicle to accurately position itself with regards to obstacles in its immediate environment, and operate in an autonomous manner on both highways and city or urban
roads, including roundabouts, once the destination points are entered into the navigation system.” SAFER Ponz says that, once the technology is advanced enough, it will make driving much safer– but developments like that are some way away yet. They do hope, however, to have driverless taxis available for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. “The features offered by our ProPILOT technology, namely anti-lock brakes, active cruise control, blind-spot warning and parking assist, introduce greater control and precision, and can help reduce human error, ultimately providing greater safety and more confident driving,” he says. “We believe that with autonomous drive systems in place, we will see a drastic reduction in road traffic accidents.” Sales of self-driving cars are currently in their thousands across the globe, but
estimates say that by 2030, there could be as many as 10 million on roads worldwide. While the UK government has committed £100 million towards trials of self-driving cars, these won’t be taking place until 2019, but there is some progress being made elsewhere. In Paris and Helsinki, for instance, robotic buses are shuttling passengers throughout the cities, while an 18-wheel autonomous delivery truck drove beer across 120 miles in Colorado. While a truly robotic car taking all the responsibility from your hands is a while off yet, it’s a concept that’s not quite as ‘nutty professor’ as it once seemed. Who knows? In a couple of decades’ time, the road could be well and truly open to all. i

Whether you’re in need of a wheelchair accessible vehicle, adapted motor or converted minibus, specialists TBC Conversions could have the answer. We found out more about their work
QUALITY, RELIABLE CONVERSIONS FROM TBC
T
BC Conversions is a market-leading company operating across the UK, specialising in wheelchair accessible vehicles, minibus conversions and vehicle adaptions. Established in 2005, the company has secured a reputation for quality and reliability, converting each vehicle with intelligence, empathy and care. TBC Mobility Conversions convert wheelchair accessible vehicles to meet your individual requirements. They not only understand the business of vehicle conversion, but also more importantly understand the needs of their clients and customers. All TBC-converted wheelchair accessible vehicles are ECWVTA. SAFETY From a consumer’s perspective, it’s all about safety. When a vehicle has been converted to meet the needs of the wheelchair user and is European Type approved, it means that the vehicle has under gone a “sledge test” – a test similar to those using “crash test dummies”, only this time they include a wheelchair. TBC believe that safety is the number one consideration, and that wheelchair passengers should be afforded the same kind of protection as ALL passengers. That’s why TBC were the first converter company in the UK to achieve full European Type Approval for their converted Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Life. The organisation work closely with a wide range of manufactures and offer a variety of wheelchair accessible vehicles including the New Euro 6 VW Caddy Maxi Life, Ford Grand Tourneo Connect and Citroen Berlingo, to name but a few. Vehicle adaptions are also carried out, with TBC being an approved installer for Motability to fit a large range of adaptions. They offer a comprehensive range of adaptions, including push/pull brake/ accelerator, left-foot accelerator, minihoists, swivel seats, electric hand brake and Smartsteer remote controls.
28
TBC believe that safety is the number one consideration, and that wheelchair passengers should be afforded the same kind of protection as ALL passengers
BESPOKE TBC Taxi and Bus Conversions supply bespoke accessible minibuses catering for your requirements, offering vehicles suitable for up to 16 passenger seats plus driver, and up to six wheelchairs. TBC have secured European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval (ECWVTA) on their range of VW Crafter and minibus conversions, ensuring vehicles have undergone the most rigid safety testing and have been approved to manufacturer standards. All TBC minibus conversions offer a full three-year “bumper to bumper” warranty and TBC have a network of local commercial dealership in place throughout the UK, ensuring complete vehicle support. Before you make any decisions on your next wheelchair accessible vehicle, having a vehicle adaption or selecting a minibus, talk to TBC.

ADVICE AND SUPPORT
Driving Force of insurance Motor insurance – a must-have and a minefield all rolled into one. Back in the day, getting insurance when you had a disability or adapted car could be confusing, and an added worry to getting on the road. Thankfully, providers are stepping up to the mark to make things easier
T
he Motability Scheme was an open door to independence when it was first introduced in 1977. Providing a car, insurance and roadside cover, it’s a great deal. But as new changes to the Scheme are rolled out across the UK, thousands of disabled people are missing out. With changes to the welfare system affecting the ease of getting out and about for disabled people, insurance companies have had to step up. Leading suppliers and tailored companies are now coming forward to provide information and support for disabled people in need of insuring their cars – something that comes as standard for Motability customers. CHANGES Disability varies from person to person; in turn, cars may need to be adapted to suit specific needs. In the past, insurance companies would either not insure adapted vehicles or premiums would be extortionately high – making driving an expensive activity. Moving on with the times has seen many insurance companies not only provide quotes for adapted cars,
30
but also provide affordable insurance for customers. Nowadays, there are dedicated insurance companies for disabled drivers – including Chartwell Insurance and Fish Insurance. Working to provide disabled drivers with affordable insurance, Chartwell (www.chartwellinsurance.co.uk) also include benefits that are not readily available from other providers.
