Raise your vodka Red Bull in honour of Glasgow, the party capital of Scotland with a whole heap of culture to boot. Gather your mates for a scrummy lunch in one of Glasgow’s leading foodie gaffs before getting down and dirty at some of the best club nights and gigs. Dear Green Place, what can we get up to today?

[DAY] PIECE

1056 Argyle Street www.pieceglasgow.com Is there anything better in life than a piece [pee-ss] to fill you up? No, especially not when the fine folks at Piece in the bustling Finnieston strip are, in their own words, raising the humble sandwich to greatness. Expect daily delights for your taste buds and seasonal menus that won’t break the bank. We can hear your belly rumbling already.

BAFFO PIZZA + BIRRA

1377 Argyle Street www.facebook.com/PizzaBaffoBirra Foodies and all those who appreciate a good pizza, listen up – Baffo is calling. With real Italian ovens, Italian ingredients and an array of Italian beers and wines, this is the best place to get an authentic, traditional pizza for miles. Their desserts are a haven of Nutella and ice cream – and best of all, it’s all at affordable prices. Just £6 for a 12-inch? Hello, Baffo.

GLASGOW NECROPOLIS

Castle Street www.glasgownecropolis.org Now bear with us! We know the idea of visiting a graveyard sounds a bit, well… morbid, but the Glasgow Necropolis is a must-see. The Victorian cemetery is filled with history, stunning architecture and fascinating stories about the 50,000 people buried there. Not forgetting the absolutely breath taking view of Glasgow at the peak of the cemetery, there is truly no better way to see this wonderful city in all its glory. 6

RIVERSIDE MUSEUM

100 Pointhouse Road www.glasgowlife.org.uk Culture is never far away in Glasgow town, and the famous Riverside Museum is no different. Throughout the year, this is the place to go and see retro cars and buses, not to mention the super cool design of the museum itself. However, come May, Riverside becomes a beacon of laser beams, world-famous DJs and neon face paint for the bank holiday weekend, when Electric Frog and Pressure take over the exterior of the museum for a two-day rave.

HOUSE FOR AN ART LOVER

10 Dumbreck Road www.houseforanartlover.co.uk Located in the grounds of Bellahouston Park, this super fancy house is based on the designs of Glasgow’s son, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. With its very own art gallery, café and art studios, this is the perfect spot for you art geeks. Or just those looking to get a cracking Insta snap.

CITY GUIDE

SWG3

100 Eastvale Place www.swg3.tv You can’t come to Glasgow and skip the Finnieston strip. One of the most popular areas in Glasgow, the crowning jewel in amongst the bars and restaurants is the one and only SWG3. Literally an old warehouse (why no’, eh?), you’re really not ‘cool’ if you don’t spend at least one night bouncing away to the latest DJ, grime artist or releasing your inner Burns during a poetry night.

SUB CLUB

NICE N SLEAZY

[night]

421 Sauchiehall Street www.nicensleazy.com Graffiti on the walls, Buckfast a staple drink, the best Mexican food about and live music almost every night – you can’t go far wrong in Nice N Sleazy. Possibly one of the most hipster bars about with beards and tattoos galore, this is a guaranteed hit. If the Mexican food from Squid and Whale doesn’t make this a favourite, the club nights certainly will. Get yourselves down to Hip Hop Friday!

THE ART SCHOOL

20 Scott Street www.theartschool.co.uk Possibly one of the oldest buildings in Glasgow, The Art School is the place to be for contemporary music, events and art. If you’re a quirky individual who likes to see the true artsy side of Glasgow, or you appreciate a little bit of dance music and strobe lighting, you’ll feel right at home.

22 Jamaica Street www.subclub.co.uk Ah, the legendary Sub Club, or Subby to the locals. Placed slap bang in the middle of Jamaica Street, blink and you’ll miss its dingy entrance. One of the sweatiest and noisiest clubs in Glasgow (don’t worry, you’ll get handed some earphones; the BO spray is up to you), expect underground DJs and techno tunes blaring until the wee hours of the morning.

MOSKITO

200 Bath Street www.moskitoglasgow.com Cocktails and grub, this is one for SAAS day! One of the many cocktail bars on the popular Bath Street, Moskito is the place to go with your best uni pals to make them think you can be a wee bit fancy yet still edgy – isn’t that the whole point of uni? Booths are available if you’re planning on making a night of it, and with a heap of clubs and pubs around, you’re not short of options for after.

GROSVENOR CINEMA

Ashton Lane www.grosvenorwestend.co.uk Forget Cineworld – Glasgow has some of the trendiest movie theatres about. A must-visit is the Grosvenor Cinema down in Ashton Lane. Showing blockbuster releases and art house films, grab some vino and relax on the couches to enjoy a cinematic experience like no other. After the film, you can even pop upstairs and grab a bite to eat in the Grosvenor Café. THE STUDENT BIBLE // SUMMER 2017

HOOT THE REDEEMER

7 Hanover Street www.hoottheredeemer.com Dive headfirst into Edinburgh’s selfconfessed ‘dive’ bar, taking you right back to 1950s America. You become a legend amongst men, enjoying the different cocktail slushies, alcoholic ice cream and finest craft beers about.

TRAVEL

Ah, finally! You thought it would never arrive but here we are – it’s summer. The sun is splitting the trees (kinda) and you’re ready to make the most of your time off, but what to do and where to go? Unfortunately, not all of us are master budgeters who can save up for exotic destinations around the world, but never fear – you can have a staycation like no other right here in bonnie Scotland. Namely, on the beautiful islands that decorate our coastline. Thailand is overrated anyway…

D

rink in the fresh air and copious amounts of whisky on your travels throughout the mystical and stunning Scottish islands. Many of the islands, even some of the most remote, are only a hop, skip and a jump away from the main cities in Scotland, so there really is no excuse not to get packing and catch the next ferry. Because, contrary to popular belief, our islands aren’t just for oldies after a day trip – there’s loads for students and young people to embrace too. The only problem is deciding which island is best for you! ORGANISED TOURS “Grab Scotland by the horns” is the motto of HAGGiS Adventures (www. haggisadventures.com), and boy do they know how to make the most of your adventure. Offering a selection of holidays, from day visits to week-long breaks, you’re not going to go far wrong with HAGGiS. ‘The Hebridean Hopper’ tour is five days’ worth of fantastic Scottish scenery and finding out a wee bit more about this fine nation that we call home. Take in the sights of Loch Ness (if you see Nessie, question your whisky intake) and Glencoe, before setting sail to visit Lewis and Harris, ending your travels in Skye. All HAGGiS Adventures include an experienced tour guide, ferry crossings and outings, including the likes of the Iron Age fort of Dun Carloway in Lewis and a Loch Ness cruise – the views are more than Instagram-worthy. HAGGiS also offer a ten-day ‘Compass Buster’ tour starting in Edinburgh and travelling to four different locations, including the Isle of Skye and Stornoway, before ending in Orkney, all for £499. See how The Orcadians live in one of the most northerly islands in Scotland and walk the beaten track to get the best views of the mountains and stunning skylines the country has to offer. FLY SOLO Rather go it alone? You and your mates can make a rural and rugged adventure

out of your holiday by booking on CalMac’s Island Hopscotch (www.calmac. co.uk/hopscotch). One of the main ferry companies in Scotland, Caledonian MacBrayne have 25 locations that can be accessed throughout the year with tickets valid for 31 days. Prices for tickets start at £5 for two-stop destinations or £19.55 per person if you’re looking to tick off some more islands. CalMac have a variety of locations and information on which islands are best to visit and from which port – all you need to do is make sure you catch the right ferry. One option would be to visit Arran before hoping to Kintyre then Islay. Arran is one of the easiest islands in Scotland to get to. Think of it as your popular friend who loves a night out and is never short of interesting stories and ideas. Just two hours away from Glasgow, Arran will bring you quirky pubs and live music, its very own brewery and distillery, before stunning you with Goat Fell, the highest point on the island that challenges amateur and skilled walkers to climb to the summit. From Arran, jump over to Kintyre. If an old Christmas song pops into your head then you’re bang on the money – Mull of Kintyre is about the quaint island. You’re guaranteed to be in awe of the picturesque scenery around Kintyre; travelling across the west coast of Scotland will open your eyes to the exquisite sights and locations outside

the big city. It’s as if you’re jumping into another world. On your island adventures, it would be a down right sin to skip a distillery visit. Partnering the beautiful sights and Scotland’s favourite drink (after IrnBru obviously) a visit to one of Islay’s world-famous distilleries will give you an experience that you wouldn’t get in Ibiza. FREE TO ROAM If you’re looking for the freedom to roam the islands but you’ve not quite got your organising skills down, look no further than Hebridean Hopscotch (www. hebrideanhopscotch.com). Travel agents are on hand here to help you discover new islands, figure out how to get there, and provide accommodation to boot – unless you want to discover your inner Bear Grylls and camp, which is a popular option amongst island travellers. Just because you’re staying at ‘home’ doesn’t mean you can’t experience the same lifechanging sights as your gap year pals. Got itchy feet now? Eager to get out there and ramble in the wildernesses of some of the most remote islands going, giving up access to beloved wifi and social media? Hop out of your comfort zone, and skip onto the next ferry to an island. They’re just waiting for you to jump in the air for a selfie on a sandy white beach, before sipping a cheeky wee dram. Fun and new experiences guaranteed – weather not so much…

The island-hopping packing list 1 Insect repellent –midges are real. And they will bite you. 2 A decent map, because 4G isn’t always guaranteed. 3 Plenty of money for all the brilliant old-man pubs you’ll encounter. 4 Fashion for all weathers – all four seasons in the one day is pretty much a certainty.

5 And don’t forget your sense of adventure!

TRAVEL

OF THE BEST

Budget Breaks Want to use your holidays wisely and get away from it all? The best summer ever is just a plane ticket away – and it doesn’t have to break the bank…

2

Portugal

Hotfoot it to Lisbon this summer for a city break to remember. The cost of living in Portugal is much cheaper than it is in your typical Spanish holiday resorts, so you can eat, drink and be merry for a fraction of the cost of a break in Marbs. You can get pretty reasonable accommodation through Airbnb, and your flights won’t cost a fortune. Picturesque Lisbon offers great food, beautiful buildings, those trams everyone Istagrams, and maybe even tie it all in with top music festival Super Bock Super Rock in July – London Grammar, The Orwells and Red Hot Chili Peppers are playing.

3 Romania

While it is a member of the EU, Romania isn’t in the Eurozone – meaning your cash goes a little bit further when you switch your pounds for lei. This means food and, more importantly, drink are super cheap. Capital city Bucharest is well worth a visit – not only is it beautiful and packed with interesting architecture, museums and its very own Arc de Triomphe (take that, Paris), but the nightlife is pretty great too.

Cambodia

Bolivia

If South America is more your bag, put Bolivia at the top of your list. It’s one of the cheapest countries in the continent – you can get yourself a bottle of beer for less than £1.50. Bolivia is big on impressive sights, like the cathedral in Copacabana and the Salar de Uyuni salt flats, where the landscape reflects the sky and makes for AMAZING photos for Facebook when you’re home. You can get yourself a budget bed for the night for between £3 and £5, or push the boat out and go for a top-end hotel for £50 a night.

4

Ignore your pals who are heading to Asia for Full Moon parties in Thailand and volunteer projects in India – Cambodia is where it’s at for a cheap holiday that doesn’t feel too ‘touristy’. You can get accommodation for as little as £2.50 a night, or if you’re feeling flush, up your budget for five-star quality at a much lower price – we’re talking rooms with their own pool for about £50 a night. Luxury! Cruise the Mejonk, visit Angkor Wat Archaeological Park, shop the Central Market – you’ll never want to leave.

5 Greece

Poor Greece has had a bit of a howler when it comes to the old economy – but it’s great news for holidaymakers. Whether you’re after a hard partying break in a resort like Kos or some subdued sunbathing by the perfect blue sea in Corfu, Greece has something for everyone. The flight’s pretty lengthy, but it’s worth it for the blue skies, white buildings, and blow-your-head-off Ouzo shots with the locals. Opa! THE STUDENT BIBLE // SUMMER 2017

r e m Sum HOW TO HAVE A

Productive

See ya later, coursework. We’ve got a summer break to fill! Sadly, not all of of us have the budget to spend the summer in Ibiza – so how can you make sure you do something productive? We’ve got some inspo to get you started

WORK IT,BABY

GIVE BACK

In the words of Rihanna (ft Drake) – work, work, work, work, work. Inspiring stuff. But really, we know that summer’s all about maxing, relaxing all cool, but getting a job – part-time or full-time – is a great use of your break. And just think of all that beer money you’ll save up for the new semester! Look into seasonal work at local tourist attractions, delve into retail, think about hospitality, apply for contact centres – the options are endless. And with some of it, you might even be able to keep it on parttime when you’re back at class. The real benefit of working over summer? You gain loads of valuable skills that’ll make your CV shine in the future. The applicant who suffered a summer serving tourists in a café on the coast is going to be a much better communicator, more patient, better organised and more tolerant than the one who has nae work experience whatsoever.

Brace yourself – warm and fuzzies incoming. Volunteering with a charity or local organisation is an amazing use of your time. Why spend your summer tagging your pals in memes on Facebook when you could be stocking shelves in a local food bank or helping a charity boost its social media presence? Volunteering opportunities are vast and varied. If you’ve got any knowledge or skills of note? Somebody out there would absolutely love for you to go into their organisation and share them. Head to the Volunteer Scotland site (www.volunteerscotland.net) to see what’s on offer in your local area, or you can approach charities and organisations that appeal to your interests directly to see if there’s any way you can help out. And who says you have to stay at home in the UK to do this? Check out organisations like Projects Abroad (www.projects-abroad.co.uk) and VSO (www.vsointernational.org) to find out about volunteering overseas, even if it’s to plan ahead for next year. Yes, it’ll cost you but – hello? The opportunity to teach kids English or to work on conservation projects is priceless.

GIE’S A CHALLENGE Whether it’s to pass your driving test, go to the gym more than once, to stop checking your phone quite so much, or to read a book a week, give yourself a challenge at the beginning of the summer and try stick to it! It’ll give you something to work towards, keep you out of mischief and give a bit more structure to your days too. 22

BOOST YOUR BRAIN POWER Geeks, gather round – we’ve got some exciting news. Learning’s not just for term-time. Yaaaas! How about using your break to boost your brain and learn a new skill? Universities and colleges often have summertime programmes, where you can take classes in film appreciation, photography or even wine tasting (where do we sign up?). Check out online learning providers too like the fantastic free Future Learn (www.futurelearn.com), who offer taster courses in everything from languages to psychology. And you don’t have to go for formal learning opportunities. Get yourself onto YouTube and check out tutorials in everything from knitting to cooking. Cosy, well-fed flatmates are happy flatmates, so get learning.

TIME OUT

SWITCH UP YOUR VIEWING HABITS Sure, watching Gilmore Girls from the beginning is an amazing idea, but what about delving into the ‘documentaries’ category on Netflix instead? It’ll stop your brain getting rusty for that first tutorial back after summer.

GAIN SOME EXPERIENCE Whether you know what you want to do after graduation or not (or if you’re in the ‘I want to vomit at the mere thought of that’ camp), summer’s a good time to check out your employment options and get some work experience. It could be a couple of days with an engineering firm. You could try for a full month interning with a PR company. Whatever you fancy, companies across the country are offering up summer placements for plucky students keen to get ahead, in industries like science, marketing and beyond. The best method of attack is to approach companies you’d like to work for directly and ask if they ever take students on. Check out Gumtree too to see if anyone’s actively looking for work experience candidates or interns, or you can try the likes of www.gothinkbig.co.uk. Work experience and internships are quite often unpaid, so make sure you can afford to do this before committing to anything.

SET UP SHOP We don’t mean literally get a store on your local high street. But eBay and Shpock are just screaming out to be used over the holidays. Go through all the crap you’ve accumulated at uni this year – including books you won’t need in the new term (always check the course descriptions for your new classes before you go for it) – and get selling. This is a win on several different levels. You’ll feel emotionally and spiritually cleansed when someone buys that dress from the Night of Your First Jägerbomb. Your life will be less cluttered. And you’ll have some spare cash to go out and buy loads more amazing stuff for next year.

THAT FESTIVAL FEELING Of course, there’s volunteer work on another platform which comes with more immediate benefits for you – volunteering at a music festival. Festies across the land look for volunteer stewards and folk to help the event run smoothly – and you get free tickets in exchange. Everyone’s a winner! Head to www.festaff.co.uk for information and ideas on how to get involved.

TOP 5 THINGS TO AVOID THIS SUMMER

Netflix binging. All day. Every day. Your ASOS habit. You can’t afford it.

Sleeping till midday. Get up and do something productive!

STAY SAFE Water may look safe but it can be dangerous

You may swim well in a warm indoor pool, but that does not mean that you will be able to swim in cold water. The dangers of water include:

· Very cold temperatures · Hidden currents · It is difficult to know how deep it is

· No lifeguards · Water pollution

may make you ill

There are more dangers of water in WINTER, these include: Thin ice

· There may be hidden

rubbish like shopping trolleys or broken glass

· It can be difficult to

get out (steep slimy banks)

You could get trapped beneath the ice Remember to stay safe around water.

STUDENT LIFE

LIFE AFTER HALLS

S

Your bags are packed and you’re moving out of the somewhat cosy life of halls – say goodbye to your only warm year at university. You and your mates are going it alone into your brand new pad. Think of the parties, think of the hilarious memories you’ll make… Think about the bills, rent and everything in between. Don’t worry if you don’t know what a guarantor is – we’re here to help you navigate your first ‘grown-up’ flat

tudent living is a world like no other. It could be compared to watching a David Attenborough documentary – we understand what’s happening, but it all seems a bit wild (and that’s just pre-drinks). The real-life stuff starts now. Where are you going to live? How do you cook a proper meal? Who will bail you out when your mum refuses? But first – who are you going to live with? FLAT ‘MATES’ Look at all the fun Chandler and Joey, Rachel and Monica had during their flat shares – yours is going to be just the same, right? Wrong. Friends was a TV show. This is reality. It was pretty clear that Joey and Chandler weren’t the cleanest of boys, but just because you’ve left halls, doesn’t mean you’re not going to be living with some interesting characters. Everyone is unique in their own way – this means a lot when you’re spending the majority of your time in close confinement with near-strangers. The Slob is probably the most annoying of them all, apparently unable to see dirt and with no concept of what soap is. Expect many mouldy

dishes (boke!) and sticky floors. Then we have the Party Animal, who loves nothing more than sleeping all day and partying all night like the true night owl they are – great when you’re up for a boogie, not so great when that assignment is due at 9am the next day. Now remember, not all heroes wear capes. Here we introduce the Mother Figure flatmate. Guaranteed to ensure your gas and electricity bills are sorted, they will probably take the bins out the most and look after you following a heavy night out. And when it all gets too much with noise levels and dishes piling up, you’ll meet the Passive Aggressive Note Writer, probably the roomie you see the least of, because notes stuck on the fridge sort everything, right? Despite their flaws, they’re your pals, and moving on from halls together, you’ll need to make sure you get along long enough to sign the tenancy agreement. THE GAFF Now we’re off to find the right place to stay. With an increase in the number of THE STUDENT BIBLE // SUMMER 2017

students swarming into Scotland’s big cities, there are now more student-friendly areas. Many estate agents have dedicated housing for students, ensuring you’re not paying an arm and a leg for a box room above the Underground. Imagine your flat share has fallen through at the last minute (it happens) and you need to find a flatmate, or a flat looking to fill their empty room – there’s an app for that. The brilliant SpareRoom (www.spareroom.co.uk) is like Tinder for finding a flat with rooms available in your area immediately, a week in advance and so on, all within your budget. What you end up doing behind closed doors is none of our business… Another handy site to keep in mind when it comes to finding the right place to live is Accommodation for Students (www.accommodationforstudents. com). Providing housing across the UK, this is your one stop shop for all things accommodation, featuring student housing, halls of residence, rooms, flatmates and even handy advice on how to make sure you don’t get ripped off. 26

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS Unfortunately it is common for students to end up in sticky situations when it comes to housing – all because they don’t know their rights. If you or your mates have found yourselves on the wrong end of your landlord’s temper, then Citizens Advice (www.citizensadvice.org.uk) is there for you. When it comes to moving into your own place there are a lot of legal matters that you must take care of. Not the most exciting of topics to think about when all you want to do is party, but ensuring you have a guarantor is imperative when moving into a new flat. A guarantor is a third party who will pay for rent, bills and damages to the property if you fail to do so. Guarantors are usually parents or close relatives, so start the sweet talking now. Before signing any legal documents, make sure your guarantor covers only you – your mum wont be too happy forking out money if your pal punches a hole in the wall.

After paying your flat deposit, make sure your landlord puts your deposit into the Tenancy Deposit Protection Scheme to ensure they can’t spend it – you will get this back after you move out if there is no damage to the property. The helpful folks at Citizens Advice will support you when it comes to dodgy landlords or any housing headaches you may be having. Living in your first flat away from halls is one of the best experiences you’ll ever have. Getting to spend time with your best pals and making memories – it’s the dream. Of course, hand in hand with the good times comes the need to ensure you pick the right people to live with and looking after your money. Now, go off into the sunset with your new house keys and club passes – just remember to tell the taxi driver the right address when you’re coming back home…

Most types of contraception can be provided by your own doctor and we recommend the website www.theinsandouts.co.uk for more information. It is available FREE from most local pharmacies up to 5 days after unprotected sex. If you’ve had unprotected sex over 5 days ago there may still be emergency contraceptive options available and you should call your GP or local sexual health clinic as soon as possible. FREE condoms can also be accessed from various sites in and around Grampian (more information on www.theinsandouts.co.uk).

TIME OUT

F AGE LET’S TALK ABOUT SEX You’re away from home, living young, wild and free (well for the weekend at least) and decide tonight’s the night to hook up with the beautiful stranger two tents down. Follow our top tips to make sure your festival sex is on fire – for all the right reasons…

Free and easy

There’s no excuse not to be sensible when it comes to sex, especially with someone you’ve only known for three hours – you don’t know where they’ve been. Condoms are available for free in most places now, including festivals – so get wrapping. Remember – no glove, no love.

No means no

Not ‘maybe’, not ‘oh but you said yes earlier’ – it means no! If you or your midnight lover change your mind about sex, then nobody should feel pressured to do something they don’t want to. Sleeping with someone under the influence of drink or drugs who can’t coherently say yes or no is considered rape, by law.

BELLADRUM TARTAN HEART

GROOVE LOCH NESS

CARNIVAL FIFTY SIX

ELECTRIC FIELDS

3-5 August Belladrum Estate, Beauly The Highlands are brought to life during the Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival, with an array of Scottish favourites and big names from across the world on the lineup. Glasgow boys Franz Ferdinand are set to headline the festival, which will see folks of all ages enjoying the great outdoors. The Pretenders, Feeder and Sister Sledge are also set to grace the stage in style. www.tartanheartfestival.co.uk 12-13 August Camperdown Park, Dundee A summer of new experiences, Carnival Fifty Six will be bouncing into Dundee in a blaze of multi-coloured joy with headliners to blow you away. Acts confirmed for the inaugural event include The Fratellis, Mark Ronson, Rudimental, and many more. Tickets for the festival start at £49.50 for a day ticket, with payment plans available (bonus). www.carnivalfiftysix.co.uk

Emergency help

19 August Loch Ness, Inverness One for the ravers, this one-night mini festival is a nightclub like no other. Set under the stars of Loch Ness, get your groove on with the big boys of DJ and techno tunes. Dance music legends Faithless will bring Loch Ness to life with one of their mesmerising, laser-filled DJ sets. Tickets for the night come at a cost of £55, with camping available. www.groovefestival.co.uk

1-2 September Drumlanrig Castle, Dumfries and Galloway In the vast woodlands of Dumfries and Galloway, Electric Fields returns for its fourth year. With four stages bringing revellers the best in new music, this one is set in the gorgeous grounds of Drumlanrig Castle. Party with Frightened Rabbit and Dizzee Rascal before getting the after-party started in the luxury glamping tents available. www.electricfieldsfestival.com

Rather hear the drum beat over the pitter-patter of tiny feet? Make sure you take the relevant precautions with contraception. Condoms are the most effective way to prevent an STI – but girls, if you’re on oral contraception make sure you take the magic pill at the same time every day. And if you puke? It’s not effective. If a drama arises (ahem), head to the medical tent for information and advice on the morning after pill.

STUDENT LIFE

HINDSIGHT IS A WONDERFUL THING… After summer, you’re going to be the best you ever. Ditching the all-nighters in the club, getting your head down to revise, starting assignments on time… yeah right! Here, we bring you some cracking advice – and regrets – from experienced former students

“As much as you promise yourself this term will be different – you will still find yourself stuck in the library at 2am finishing off an essay seven hours before it’s due.”

“Don’t take things so seriously. Yeah, you need to meet deadlines and all that, but going out and partying is still a big part of uni life.”

THE REDUCED AISLE IN TESCO IS YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND. IT REALLY IS AMAZING HOW INSTANT NOODLES CAN WORK FOR BREAKFAST, LUNCH AND DINNER! “I was unhappy with my course during third year and felt I wasn’t getting anywhere. If I had a time machine, I would go back and exert myself a bit more, or speak to a lecturer about how I was feeling. I probably would have learned a lot during the classes if I still had some enthusiasm for the course.”

“You don’t need to go to the pub after every class. It’s all fun and games until your steaming in a lecture trying to process what’s going on without looking drunk. Newsflash – it’s so bloody obvious.”

IF YOU REALISE YOU’VE PICKED THE WRONG COURSE, HAVE THE GUTS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. I DIDN’T TAKE THE CHANCE TO JUMP FROM A DEGREE IN QUANTITY SURVEYING TO ENGLISH LIT BECAUSE I WAS TOO SHY/SELF CONSCIOUS TO LEAVE ONE CLASS AND JOIN ANOTHER. FOR ME, IT’S A LIFE-LONG REGRET. “I used to steal big toilet rolls from pubs because we had communal toilets in my halls. This worked well until it fell out my handbag when I was in a club and it rolled the whole way down the dance floor – otherwise, it helped for all the parties we had.”

“If you end up getting locked in a university building, don’t panic and phone your pals asking them to get the police until an angry wee janitor escorts you out the building. Maybe just check if the library is open 24 hours before parking your bum for the night.”

“We were working on a group project and everything fell through at the last moment. Instead of getting together and figuring out how to save the project like we should have done, we all went to a club and got a really poor grade for our efforts. As fun as it was, that bad grade affected our overall average for the year – some great memories though!”

“Unfortunately, I didn’t seem to learn from any of the mistakes I made...” 30
