STUDENT LIFE

Moving to university will probably be your first time living away from home. Your flat is where you’ll spend hungover mornings, make new friends and sleep through 9am lectures. Keeping up good flatmate etiquette is the way to make sure you don’t have an epic falling out

Do’s and Don’t’s

- Do make an effort to be friends with your flatmates: we’re talking fajita nights and movies. - Don’t leave a mess around the flat, multiple people share your space now. - Do give people space, sometimes people need time themselves to destress or study. - Don’t use other people’s food. If you run out of milk ask before you make a cup of tea.

Being Clean

One thing guaranteed to cause an argument in your flat is dirty dishes. There’s always one flatmate who leaves gross bowls in the sink for weeks at a time before washing them: don’t be that person. Mould doesn’t count as a house plant and wrapping your dishes in tin foil before meals might seem like a good idea, but before you know it, you’ll pierce a hole and leftover Chinese food will be forcing you towards the sink.

BFFS You’ll probably share a bathroom as well as a kitchen. If you’ve lost the battle of who gets to use the shower first, don’t turn the kitchen tap on so that the water goes cold! Remember to be considerate. Take a week each where it’s your turn to take the bins out, bleach the loo and clean the kitchen counters. Unfortunately the cleaning fairies you had at home, aka your parents, aren’t there to do these tasks for you now.

Dealing with conflict

No matter how tidy you keep the place or what volume you play your music during pre-drinks, there’s bound to be an argument every now and again. Always approach it in a calm and collected way and listen to what your flatmates have to say before you get angry. Most issues can be resolved with a simple chat.

Being respectful

Your first year will likely be filled with parties, nights out, and holding your friends’ hair back afterwards, but studying and sleep are important, too. If you’re considerate towards your flatmates when it comes to noise they’ll do the same back. Your mum wasn’t

If there’s a bigger issue, like bullying or abuse, that can’t be resolved after talking, consider speaking to a member of staff from your halls or your student support services. It’s unlikely things will become that extreme, but if they do, you might be able to move to a different room in the same premises.

talking rubbish when she said you get what you give. Respect the people you live with and you will avoid extra stress or arguments when you’re up late doing the next day’s seminar reading. Dubstep wasn’t cool before you went to uni and it definitely isn’t at 3am.

Granted, you’re pure buzzin to be in halls and heading out every night. With great partying comes (the potential of) great medical emergencies. It’s not fun to think about, but you need to get clued up about meningitis. One of the major health risks for young adults – that’s you – meningitis comes from germs, lots and lots of germs: something else you’ll be getting used to. It can be a potentially fatal illness (grim, we know), but it's also super easy to avoid. Just follow these simple steps: • Register for your local GP. This is a given, but you’ll be amazed at how many students don’t register for the doctor whilst at uni.

• Your doctor will likely advise you to get the ACWY vaccination. It's a quick jag that protects you from many strains of the virus. Next, get to grips with the symptoms of meningitis as it could just save your life: • Fever, cold hands and feet • Drowsy, difficult to wake • Severe muscle pain • Severe headache • Vomiting • Stiff neck • Convulsions/seizures Find out more from Meningitis Now at, www.meningitisnow.org or call 0808 801 0388

LOVE

actually All you need is love…

THE OBJECT OF YOUR AFFECTION

Hey, relationships are great, except when they’re not. When you’re young, you may not know how relationships work and guess what – TV, film and the media don’t show the best examples of a happy couple. It takes time to know where your boundaries are, what you actually want from a relationship – you may not want what you assume you do, and what you want and need may change – and what you can give. Always check in with yourself: are you happy in this situation, do you feel under pressure… Is your behaviour reasonable? From abuse, to toxic behaviour and gaslighting… There are a lot of things to keep an eye out for. You may not want to face the music when you’re head over heels in lurrve, but don’t get tunnel vision. But it’s not all doom and gloom: being in love is one of the most amazing experiences ever, and being in a relationship can feel like you’re walking on air. Whatever you do, don’t make your one and only the one and only thing in your life, however amazing they are!

SELF LOVE

Now, no one is suggesting that you rush off and conduct a self-marrying ceremony, but the most important relationship you will ever have is with yourself. Be your own bae. That means taking yourself out for dates (do things alone!), pushing yourself, and taking care of yourself. You’re stuck with you for life, so no negative chat allowed, only positivity and cheerleading. When you’re feeling down, do some selfcare, give yourself treats and generally look out for yourself. And if you’ve got a goal in mind, whether it’s getting a 2:1, running in a 10km or getting up the courage to talk to the cutie in Starbucks… You’re the only one who can do it!

YOUR BFFS

Sometimes it’s the relationships that you have with your friends that are the most tumultuous and meaningful – after all, they stick by you through thick and thin, when you’re boaking in the loo at 4am to standing next to you when you get married. Awwww. Friendships can change though. Going to uni or college has an effect on your friendship groups from school, and as you meet new people, old pals may fall to the wayside. Just ‘cos we’re hyperconnected via social media doesn’t mean you can let your friendships slide. Reach out in real life and spend some quality time together with old friends – as well as your new besties from your hall or course. You need all your friends!

YOUR SEXUAL HEALTH

Most types of contraception can be provided by your own doctor and we recommend the website www.theinsandouts.co.uk for more information. FREE condoms can also be accessed from various sites in and around Grampian (more information on www.theinsandouts.co.uk). Emergency contraception is available FREE from most local pharmacies up to 5 days after unprotected sex. If you’ve had unprotected sex over 5 days ago there may still be emergency contraceptive options available and you should call your GP or local sexual health clinic as soon as possible.

Protect yourself from Blood Borne Viruses (HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C). These may be present in semen and vaginal fluid so use a condom. They are also present in blood – if you inject drugs (including steroids or tan enhancers) use fresh, clean equipment every time you inject. A list of injecting equipment providers is available here: https://www.hi-netgrampian.org/wpcontent/uploads/2017/12/Current-needleexchanges.doc.pdf If you think you may have been exposed to any of these viruses ask your GP for a blood test. They can provide confidential information about the test, reducing your risk of exposure to the virus in future and, if necessary, the treatments available.

Advice about your sexual health, preventing unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections and blood borne viruses can be sought confidentially from your GP, practice nurse and local pharmacy.

LOWDOWN Let’s talk about sex baby, let’s talk about you and me, let’s talk about all the STI’s doing the rounds and figure out when to get tested. Soon, probably

Y

oung, free and single, in a committed relationship, or just figuring out this whole sex thing: it’s important to keep yourself (and Mr or Mrs Lova, Lova) safe. HEALTHY Aye, sex can be a pure riddy when talking to anyone other than your mates. But it doesn’t have to be. If you’ve had a night of passion and the condom seemed to disappear in the act of passion (ahem, once is a mistake), or even if you were really listening during sex ed, a trip to the nurse is on the cards. And believe us, the nurse will have heard – and seen – it all before. An STI (sexually transmitted infection) can be very irritating, cause serious illness and as embarrassing as it is, many of them are easy to get rid of. From chlamydia to gonorrhoea or warts, it’s not just the name of an STI that can be nasty. As the most common infections amongst the yoof, you’ll be happy to know that after a dose of antibiotics you’ll be back to your old self.

However, some STI’s will be with you for life. Don’t worry, your sex life isn’t over before it even began. All infections can be managed with medication so you can still live a long healthy life: it just means condoms are a must. And let’s be real, they are already! CONTRACEPTION Prevention is better than cure, trust us. Condoms, the pill, the implant, the coil or a jag in the bum: there’s contraception to suit everyone. When it comes to keeping yourself safe in the bedroom condoms are the guaranteed way to protect yourself form an STI. They’re also a must to protect you from a b-a-b-y. Now, we’re guessing that you’re lovin’ student life so that means the pitter patter of tiny feet is going to throw a spanner in the works. Lucky for us, contraception is free in our bonnie country. From the pill to the implant, there are many forms of contraception out there, ladies, and a quick visit to your GP, or nearest sexual health clinic,

will provide all the information on the right contraception for you. When you visit a sexual health clinic many forms of contraception can be prescribed the very same day. Woop! TALKIN’ LOVE Your love life should be full of fun, not STI’s and worries about contraception, whether you want to meet the one, fall head over heels or simply enjoy a quick fling or three. When it comes to shiny new relationships, it can be easy for all this safety chat to go out the window. If you’re doing it like they do on the Discovery Channel, it’s important to discuss safe sex, getting tested for STI’s and respecting everyone’s choices. Sex is fun, so don’t let a lapse of judgement ruin the party.

CROWDS

Scottish crowds are known for being wild, we’re talking about the chant. Nina Nesbitt lives in London now, but the Edinburgh native still gets the most excited about playing in Scotland. “I love rowdy crowds, so playing Glasgow gigs are always my favourite,” she told us. Dundonian boys from The View, are no stranger to a rowdy crowd. The band’s frontman, Kyle Falconer, may have gone solo, but crowds are still bringing that classic View fire to gigs. “I love Glasgow and I love the sun, I’m playing a gig and everyone’s getting smashed,” he says. Fair enough.

SUPPORT

Most bands have fans around the world, but Scottish support is unrivalled. Only half of Hunter and the Bear is from Scotland, but the country has claimed the band as its own. “I think Scotland has taken ownership of our music, the crowd

always comes out for us,” says frontman Will Irvine. Support doesn’t just come from fans like you and me. “There’s such a scene of artists supporting artists here, unlike other places where it’s dog eat dog,” says Will. For The LaFontaines, the best thing is knowing fans will always be there when they come home – even if it’s been a while. “We’re lucky because we have a loyal fan base, especially at home,” frontman Kerr tells us. “The support you get for everything you’re doing, having these people means everything in the world to us.”

VENUES

We might be biased, but Scotland has some of the best music venues in the world. The atmosphere is electric, whether you’re squished in a tiny crowd at King Tut’s or sitting in the highest tier at the Hydro. After pulling in a massive crowd at this year’s TRNSMT festival and selling out two nights at the Barrowlands, you wouldn’t know Lewis Capaldi hadn’t even released a single three years ago. Getting to play in some of Glasgow’s oldest venues still amazes him. “It’s still

really weird that people come to watch me and actually listen to me,” he says. “To get to play such an iconic Scottish venue like the Barras is unreal.” Whether you’re a band, an obsessed fan, or looking to discover some new music, Scotland is bringing home the biggest names and banging tunes.

Ones to watch

If you’re Glaswegian you’ve probably heard of The Snuts, or listened to their track named after the city. But if you’ve just moved for uni or college they’re a must-see. The West Lothian-born band are determined to give people a taste of the Scottish music scene they’ve always known. “People singing their hearts out, jumping about, grabbing their best mates, that’s all we want,” singer Jack Cochrane says. “It’s what we grew up doing so that’s what we want to try and recreate. That’s part of our music and our sound.”

Once you’ve got your bearings, or just worked out the route to the closest supermarket and back, it’s time to check out Glasgow’s famous music scene. Before you make a beeline for the Hydro, check out some of the city’s best small music venues

CITY CENTRE

Broadcast

Sauchiehall Street www.facebook.com/broadcastglasgow Broadcast is the perfect place to see the latest indie music coming onto the scene or a local Glasgow band returning to its roots for a spontaneous acoustic set. Before you head down the spiral staircase to the basement gig area, grab a cocktail: we recommend the strawberry daiquiris made with jam. Or why not grab a bite to eat? The kitchen at Broadcast is a rotating pop-up so you can try something new every few months.

King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut

Kings Court www.monocafebar.com Mono is more than just a great place to eat. The venue holds gigs, exhibitions, workshops and an in-house independent record store, Monorail Music. Whether you’re popping in to find the next vinyl for your collection, to see some live music or grab some vegan food, the staff will make you feel like you are part of the Mono family. We never leave without ordering a portion of the macaroni cheese first. Yum.

Mono

St Vincent Street www.kingtuts.co.uk/whats-on Everyone knows King Tut’s. The venue credits itself as being an integral part of the grassroots music scene in the city, bringing you all the best new music. Along with fresh music, you’ll find some of your more famous faves fighting for a spot on the what’s on list. Before you head upstairs for a gig, check out the posters and merch, or grab a bit to eat in the bar.

PIC © @IKINGTUTSOFFICIAL

Renfield Lane www.stereocafebar.com Tucked down an alleyway near Central Station, Stereo might not seem like the most obvious place to go for a gig. It’s a vegan restaurant, late night bar, gig and club venue, so there’s always something going on. The staff will chat to you like you’re an old friend. Don’t miss the homemade hummus! Great Western Road www.thehugandpint.com/whats-on One of the city’s most-loved music venues, The Hug and Pint likes to keep things local, including food, drink and performers. The aim is to provide the friendliest atmosphere in Scotland and that’s what you’ll get if you head in for a drink, a gig or just a chat. If you’re a musician, you can even apply to play at the venue yourself.

Barrowland Ballroom

Byres Road www.oran-mor.co.uk/whats-on/live-music A converted church nestled in the west end, everyone has to visit Òran Mór at least once while they’re living in Glasgow. Head to the top of Byres Road and you’ll see the venue’s famous neon halo lit up at night. There are always events on, including dinners, weddings upstairs, gigs or club nights. Head downstairs to The Venue for the best live music in an intimate setting.

Saint Luke’s

Bain Street www.stlukesglasgow.com/whats-on More than a music venue or restaurant, you can see comedy, theatre or art in the converted church with its original organ and stained glass. A favourite among Scottish bands who have made it big, Saint Luke’s offers the occasional free entry gig and lazy afternoons with music and brunch – the perfect hangover cure. If you fancy food a little more up-market than pancakes before a gig, head to the restaurant The Winged Ox attached.

SOUTHSIDE

The Glad Café

Pollokshaws Road www.thegladcafe.co.uk/ events-and-tickets A not for profit music venue, The Glad Café provides Shawlands with good coffee, great cakes and even better gigs. It’s known for acoustic gigs, but the programme includes local and international acts playing indie, electronic, experimental, world and traditional music.

The Rum Shack

Pollokshaws Road www.musicglue.com/ the-dancehall Every rum lover’s dream, The Rum Shack in Glasgow’s southside has it all: food, a beer garden, drink and a dancehall. The venue’s dancehall hosts everything including live music, club nights and artisan markets. It’s a small space: only 250 people, so if you’re planning to head along for a gig, book your tickets in advance.

Gallowgate www.barrowland-ballroom.co.uk/calendar Like King Tut’s, you’ve probably heard about the legendary Barrowland Ballroom before moving to Glasgow, or will have seen a photo of its massive neon sign. Dubbed by locals as the Barras, the current building has been around since 1960 and was originally used for, you guessed it, dancing. Today, it’s arguably the city’s most famous music venue and draws in bands from all over the world. The patterned ceiling and sticky wooden floors are all part of the venue’s charm.

Ayden

From the neon dripped gritty streets of Glasgow’s city centre to the lush parks bringing partying and nature together, Scotland’s largest city has a lot to offer. We spoke with Ayden Miller – a quirky, tattooed, stylish blogger – to find out about her local haunts

BEST BAR

You can’t go far wrong looking for a tipple on the hustle and bustle of Sauchiehall Street and there is one spot that you can’t skip. “Nice N Sleazy’s is a casual, but busy bar with a rock/indie vibe. Perfect for predrinks, or even staying there all night long as it has gigs and guest club nights on in the basement almost every evening,” recommends Ayden. Just a hop skip and a jump away there’s Bloc (hello Irn Bru pulled pork burgers and Buckfast ice cream) and the Admiral Bar, with the hottest club night in town: Pretty Ugly. It brings out top tunes, your dodgy dance moves and occasionally celebs. We’ll let you into a secret: Pretty Ugly is known to bring out the famous faces of Glasgow. Paolo Nutini and the CHVRCHES trio are known to hit the booth after a few vodka mixes.

you’ve been out clubbing? “I would definitely head to Steak & Cherry! It’s an American/Italian restaurant open until 4am. I don’t think there’s anywhere else in the city where you could get a T-bone steak while waiting on your taxi home,” she enthuses.

BEST HANG OUT

Platform

Black Pine Coffee

BEST LATE-NIGHT SNACK

After dancing all night with celebs or thinking you are a celeb (say no to tequila shots), sometimes all you need is scran. “Slouch serves proper homemade comfort food until 2am every night of the week. Ideally paired with the rock inspired cocktail menu, and live music throughout the week,” says Ayden. Fancy a proper sit-down meal after

Cafe Strange Brew

Glasgow is filled with secret hang out spots to impress your new mates (or crush) with. Ayden suggests Platform. “It’s a new street food market opened in the Arches under Glasgow Central. It has loads of different food vendors to choose from and a big shared seating section to grab a bite and chill out. It also has a twice monthly shopping event called Super Market, which plays host to indie designers and retailers from across the city. Plus, it’s all dog friendly too!” Bonus. If you’re feeling arty, want to top up your Insta stories, but don’t fancy kicking about an art gallery, there’s only one solution: the Glasgow Mural Trail. “Glasgow plays host to some amazing street art scattered across the city, and you can now follow the trail from east to west, and back again, by using the Glasgow Mural Trail Map. The whole walk is just under six miles long, and can take around four hours – so wear your comfy shoes,” says Ayden.

BEST RESTAURANTS

Forget the soggy bacon buttie from Greggs, Glasgow is practically throwing eggs and bacon in your face (or avocado if you’re into that) for brunch – perfect cure for a sore heid. Ayden’s one stop for brunch is Cafe Strange Brew. She says: “This gem in the south side is THE place to go for breakfast. Eggs every way possible, bangin’ specials, and great options for veggies and vegans.” From brunch to pushing the boat out at dinner time, head to Absurd Bird, cooried into the corners of Buchanan Street. “Chicken, waffles, and all of the cheese! Wash it down with some Absurd Moonshine or deep south inspired cocktails,” recommends Ayden.

BEST COFFEE

When it comes to coffee, Glasgow doesn’t do things by halves. The coffee stop for Ayden is west end based Black Pine Coffee. “It’s perfect for meeting friends or getting some studying done. Fuelled by delicious coffee – of course – it also stocks some great cakes, and be sure to take your dog along too for a polaroid picture to go up on the Black Pine Dugs wall of fame.” Coffee, cake, and man’s best friend, sign us up. Or go to the dark side and get involved with the cartel at The Good Coffee Cartel. “The cartel is in Kinning Park, operating out of a really cool space with quite industrial vibes. It roasts, sells and serves its own delicious line of coffee. Well worth a walk over the river, and make sure you buy some to take home, too,” advises Ayden. Yum! All the coffee.

most amazing handmade doughnuts with lots of weird and wonderful toppings and flavour combinations. Tempo Tea Bar is the place to go for some refreshing bubble tea in a really cute setting. It’s the perfect location to grab a drink (and take your doughnut) then sit and do some people watching outside the GOMA or in George Square.” From bubble tea and doughnuts all the way to the wild, wild, west: Glasgow has it all. Release your inner Clint Eastwood and visit the Grand Ole Opry (guaranteed best wildcard night out in town). From bowling club prices, props behind the bars, a bucking bronco and the old gals and guys of Glasgow town providing some top-notch patter, grab your cowboy boots and head doon for some line dancin. See you out there!

WILDCARD

“I like to end things on a sweet note, and Glasgow plays host to some of my favourite places to indulge in some super sweet things,” Ayden says. “With a location in the west end and the city centre, Tantrum Doughnuts creates the

CITY GUIDE

If you’re moving to the granite city, there’s more to do than watch the ships or hang out at the usual bars near Union Street. We speak to University of Aberdeen graduate and blogger Anastasia, or as you might know her, Natbees, about all the best places to eat, drink and party

BEST BARS

Anastasia recommends Dusk Bar, Orchid or The Tippling House. All three have extensive cocktail menus and interiors that will have your Instagram likes soaring – bonus! Have a great night out without blowing your budget and head to The Blue Lamp, Six Degrees North or The Bobbin. “The Bobbin has definitely been one of my favourite bars,” says Anastasia. “It feels homely and also does good smoothies, the green one is my favourite. Six Degrees North is a minimal pub with a passion for Belgian beers, the fruit beers are a must-try!”

when you’ve had one too many tequilas the night before. “Their menu is amazing and with the blue walls and pictures of Santorini, it really feels like you’re in Greece!”

BEST PLACE TO HANG OUT

Sometimes you just need some time to chill (or nurse a hangover). Anastasia recommends dragging yourself out of bed and heading to Christos Greek Taverna. “Christos always makes the best jokes – he will be your friend within the first half hour of your visit.” We hear Greek food works wonders

Once you’ve finished stuffing your face with feta, sample some of the local seafood at Moon Fish Café. “It’s well hidden down a cobbled street, so it’s not that crowded and their food is outstanding! The staff are very knowledgeable and they have really good wine.”

BEST COFFEE

BEST LATE-NIGHT SNACK

We’ve all been there: drunk, tired and on the hunt for a midnight snack. Mexican food always gets Anastasia’s vote: “Topolabamba is one of my favourite Mexican restaurants and it stays open until late most days. Or try Muchacho for really tasty, fast food!”

Anastasia

If you’re not a coffee drinker when you head to uni, you will be when you leave. For mornings when a jar of instant isn’t enough, Anastasia heads to The Craftsman Company by the harbour. “They make the best oat lattes and have good quality coffee beans. They also do delicious pancakes and did I mention they’re dog-friendly? Win-win!” says Anastasia.

J.W.’s Sushi is not only a date night, it’s an experience with a difference: the staff prepare your food in front of you. “I love going for takeaways or a quick dinner with my friends before heading out in the city,” says Anastasia. Dress to impress and enjoy the sashimi.

Dundee

There’s more to Dundee than the River Tay and Scotland’s first design museum: it’s one of the country’s best clubbing cities and is bursting with amazing food and drink. Fashion blogger and Dundee resident Amanda, aka Honey Pop Kisses, shares her favourite spots in the city

BEST LATE-NIGHT SNACK

You’ve had one too many shots and left the night out early in search of food. When a late night snack is a necessity, there’s only one place you should be heading, says Amanda, and that’s Clarks’ Bakery. Open 24 hours a day, it’s the perfect place to grab a sausage roll, or even a Bolognese pie after a night out.

Clarks’ Bakery

As a student, coffee is your new BFF. It’s there for you when you sleep in, go through break ups or stay up all night finishing assignments, so drinking the good stuff is important. There’s no competition for Amanda, her vote goes to Daily Grind on Exchange street.

WILDCARD

BEST PLACE TO HANG OUT

If like Amanda you love people watching, mark the City Square at Caird Hall down as one of your mustsee spots. Standing since 1923, it might sound and look like something

Amanda’s favourite spots to have lunch and dinner are sister restaurants Avery & Co, which serves up fresh natural ingredients, and Mexican taqueria Mas, where the frozen margaritas are divine.

Daily Grind

Everyone needs a break from studying. There’s no better way to spend a day destressing than shopping. One of Amanda’s favourite things about Dundee is all of the indie designers and vintage stores. She recommends having a browse in Hayley Scanlan’s shop on Perth road for the best slogan tees. Keep your eyes peeled for Amanda’s own vintage lifestyle shop, Oh Hello Vintage.

PICS © HONEYPOP KISSES

If you’re looking for a predrinks destination that has more class than your halls’ kitchen, Amanda recommends Draffens for its vintage style décor and cocktail menu. If your bank account is feeling a bit poorly, she suggests heading to the Salty Dog. One of Dundee’s most popular gay bars, the atmosphere is friendly and everyone is welcome. Drinks aren’t reserved for nights out, so why not take a trip to Bird and Bear for rose gold décor and hip-hop brunch? A DJ will play while you have your hangover breakfast. Amanda normally opts for the quinoa and coconut pancakes washed down with a mimosa – sounds delish.

Edinburgh Hidden Edinburgh uncovers the gems that the city has to offer. From the best watering holes and picturesque picnic spots, to quirky shops and amazing architecture, right through to restaurants and artisan coffee shops - no cobble is left unturned. We caught up with Catherine Macintyre at Hidden Edinburgh to discover the best places to go in Auld Reekie

BEST BARS

If the only thing you have in common with James Bond is a penchant for cocktails, then you’re in the right place. The ‘burgh has lots of cosy cocktail spots and killer bars. First on the list is KIN, a chilled basement bar, open Wednesdays to Sundays, 4pm till 1am. “Located just off bustling Broughton Street, KIN is more relaxed and warming than some of its other sophisticated New Town cocktail bar neighbours,” says Catherine. “But this doesn’t mean the tipples on offer have suffered at all! This tiny joint is run by two friends who have truckloads of mixology experience behind them (it’s hard to name an Edinburgh bar they haven’t been a part of) and welcome you to the bar like old friends.” This bar might be compact, but it packs a very friendly punch! Perfect for date night. If you’re keen to hang out in rowdy Leith, there are a lot of bars worth a look. “With an impressive and rotating selection of rare craft beers, a New Orleans inspired cocktail list, and a food menu that competes with some of the best burger joints in the city, The Black Fox on Leith Walk combines the grittiness of Leith with the refinement of the New Town,”

Black Fox

KIN

The Fountain is a popular meeting point for afternoon drinks pre-cinema

says Catherine. Gourmet burgers and stonebaked pizzas combined with the relaxed gentlemen’s clublike décor create for a casual and relaxed, but stylish space, not far from the city centre. Moodily lit in the evenings, the Black Fox is ideal for pre-drinks before a night out thanks to its buzzing atmosphere. “Definitely try the alcoholic slushies too!” enthuses Catherine. A ‘real pub with a modern twist’, The Fountain is a popular meeting point for afternoon drinks precinema, or a buzzing, but relaxed joint for an end of the day nightcap – and it’s right next to student accommodation so make this one your regular. “Behind the bar you will find a decent array of beers, wines and spirits, but The Fountain also has a fantastic food offering, too,” notes Catherine. “The menu focuses on simple dishes made to a high standard and they love a sharing option – perfect for gathering all your mates together for a chin wag and some great scran!”

BEST RESTAURANT

You’re spoilt for choice in the capital, but there’s some new restos in town that you have to go to. The

CITY GUIDE second Bodega – this one is in Tollcross – needs booking, but it’s the best tacos in town. Order two to three tacos per person – perfect if you can’t decide which flavours to try! “Bodega try to keep everything fresh, from its ingredients to the constantly changing flavour combos: they make sure you return to see them again. This restaurant isn’t huge, but thanks to the approachable staff and homely atmosphere, it feels like you are dinning at a good friend’s house,” says Catherine. From Vietnamese pork to baja pork and avocado tempura tacos, Edinburgh’s first taqueria is like nothing you’ve ever had before.

BEST HANGOUTS

A Persian-inspired street food style café, the Ransacked Black Oven is right next to George Square and the main University of Edinburgh campus. “Owner Eileen was inspired to open Ransacked Black Oven whilst traveling through the Middle East with her family. They came across a whole host of delicious delicacies they wanted to bring back to Scotland,” says Catherine. “The café now serves up a hearty and eclectic selection of healthy, globally-inspired, woodfired sourdough flatbreads, pizzas, kebabs, salads, dips and pestos – perfect brain food for that mid-study library break!” Sounds yummy. The lively atmosphere at Trenchtown and vibrant decor inspired by island life puts you in a good mood and the food certainly packs a punch. “Reggae music

playing on the stereo, brightly coloured walls with graffiti style artwork, and the wafts of spice make you feel like you have truly been transported to a Caribbean paradise in Trenchtown,” says Catherine. Soak up the positive, youthful vibes of Trenchtown whilst having a catch up with friends, sharing some of the incredible Carribean soul food on offer! Catherine recommends the bone jerk chicken and fiery fried squid, washed down with a rum cocktail, natch.

BRAVEHEART’S REVENGE

Charging into 2018, William Wallace and his clan are here to capture the unsuspecting peasants wandering aimlessly through the dungeon. Why? Wallace is determined to serve up revenge. After Scotland’s famous Braveheart was captured – given up by one of his own no less – he has returned to avenge his bloody death. As you journey through the 1300s, the kilted legend will unsuspectingly appear and we guarantee you there will be jumps, screams and clinging onto your mates when Wallace does enter the room. One thing’s for sure, Wallace is angry and he’s out to scare everyone who dares to enter the halls of his castle. Get your running shoes on to escape his wrath.
