LIFE

For four long years – or more in some cases – it may have seemed like the end was never in sight. But, raise your glass of bubbly cause you made it and you are now a fullyfledged graduate!

C

ongratulations! You certainly deserve it. No matter if you’ve got a handful of exams left to sit or you’ve just received your grades through, quite possibly, the most terrifying email to open, one thing is certain: graduation day is just around the corner. Grab your smartest outfit (good excuse for a shopping spree) and put your best polished foot forward, because you are a new graduate and it is your time to glitter like the diamond you truly are.

THE BIG DAY

First things first: have fun! It can be easy to fall into serious mode, making sure you have the best photos taken, you don’t fall when you’re walking across the stage, and before you know it you’re overcome with S T R E S S. Unless you’re planning on heading back to uni, this will be your one chance of graduating. Make sure to enjoy the day and celebrate the achievements you, and all your mates, have had over the years. Plus, there might be complimentary bubbly, so it’ll help ease the jitters. Also, indulge your wee mum and dad. We promise they’re bursting with pride at your achievements – maybe even more than you are – and your mum is probz gonna cry. Roll with it.

CLASS OF

2019

Talking about rolls, have a good breakfast before you head off to the graduation hall. Graduation is all fun and games, but it is long and it can get quite tedious. You don’t want to add a rumbling belly into the mix. And keep some room for the deliciousness that is your graduation meal – literally, the best part of the day.

WHAT NEXT?

As the hangovers start to lift and reality sinks in, so can the graduation comedown. What now? It might look bleak out there (thanks Brexit), but there is an abundance of graduation schemes, Masters, Postgraduate or gap year adventures left for you to stick your teeth into. Leaving uni or college means you are well and truly back in the real world. Hello bills, rent, and tax. After acing your time in higher

education it’s totally normal to feel like a little fish in a big pond when sending out your CV to numerous companies with many other recent graduates doing the very same. Imposter syndrome is real and you might get a big dose of it after leaving uni. Feeling you’re not good enough to succeed in the roles you’re applying for, doubting your accomplishments, and truly feeling that you’re not good enough or a fraud. Push these feelings aside and know this: you are a success, you have worked tirelessly to get yourself to the end goal of graduating. To the class of 2019, here’s to a bright future. Don’t let imposter syndrome get you down! Find out how on page 6.

Adulting

Eeep! You’re officially in the real world. Or you might still have a few years to go in uni or college, either way it’s time to get #adulting Start off small and turn your grimy student flat into somewhere homelier. We bet you spend a whole heap of time in your gaff, or at someone else’s gaff, so do everyone a favour: take the bins out, wash your dishes, change your bed sheets! These minor life chores (yir maw cannie do it forever) will soon become second nature and you’ll feel more settled no matter where you’re living. A better home life will do wonders in your professional or educational career. It’s a stress fest out there sometimes, if you’re looking after your home, eating properly, maybe even hitting the gym once in a while, you’ll have a clear head to take on any challenge.

In discussion… Preparing for your first set of university exams or getting ready to go it alone: it’s a whole mixed bag of emotions. From worrying about your first *adult* job to just finding work experience, we’ve been there and we’re here to help

Clockin’ in

During your four years (or more) you’ll probably have stacked up the hours of work experience. At the time it might have felt like working your wee socks off for no money, and a little bit of experience. Believe us: this work experience will look amazing on your CV. Why not take it to the next level? If there was one placement you loved in particular, drop your contact a quick email and check in. You never know, they might get back in touch with a job offer!

Imposter syndrome

This might be something you’ve never heard of before, or you might be in the midst of an imposter syndrome attack as we speak. Don’t worry! It’s totally normal, and there has been times here at Student Bible HQ that we’ve all felt like we didn’t belong. Imposter syndrome is the phrase used when a person experiences an intense feeling of intellectual fraudulence. In other words: you know what you’re doing, but something inside you makes you feel like you don’t. After graduating it’s easy to feel like a small fish in a big pond, but you got this! Graduating from your course is an enormous achievement, as much as your family will be proud, you should be proud, too. Going out into the big bad world alone can seem daunting, even so, you’ve got the degree in the bag, you know your stuff, so don’t let thoughts of not belonging hold you back.

TOP TIP

Looking for extra work experience? Check out GoThinkBig (gothinkbig.co.uk) for top tips and opportunities.

Fun

Most importantly: have fun! You’ve not slaved away for years to not go out there and shine bright! No matter if you land lucky with a job straight out of higher education or you need to work elsewhere until you get your break, enjoy where you are in life. The weeknight sesh might be over, but that doesn’t mean the fun is either; you just have to plan it.

Career ladder

Finding your first graduate job can also be daunting. Applying for job after job can become laborious and soul destroying – especially if you’re applying for work in a condensed market. Hate to sound like your nan here, but what’s for you won’t go by you. Why not hit up Milkround (www.milkround.com) and check out if there’s a graduate scheme you can apply for. You might not end up in your dream job off the bat, just know that with hard work and ambition you’ll be clockin’ in to a career you’ll love.

When I graduated last year, my biggest worry was that I wouldn’t be able to find a job in the industry I’d spent four years studying for. Immediately after graduating, I worked 9 – 5 in a call centre, spending every evening applying for jobs related to my journalism degree. This time taught me so many valuable skills that prepared me well for my current job, and made me a stronger person. The truth is, hardly anyone gets their dream job straight out of university: you just have to keep working hard and believe that your journey over the next few months is leading you to exactly where you need to be.

EMMA

Staff Writer After I finished my classes at university I had six days before starting work. Luckily, I didn’t have to move to another city, but one thing was constantly on my mind: would I see my friends anymore? Two were moving home, some didn’t have graduate jobs yet and I couldn’t go to clubs on a weeknight anymore (a social crime, I know). Now almost a year later my concerns are gone. It’s a lot more effort to see each other, but good friends will always make it work. We check in if we haven’t seen each other in a few weeks, always meet up for birthdays and we go out on a Saturday instead of a Wednesday.

BEST GRADUATION RESTAURANT

Finding the perfect graduation restaurant seems like more hassle than it’s worth, sadly McDonalds isn’t an option (if only). Pick somewhere your family will like, but at the end of the day it’s a celebration for you. Find a restaurant you will love and remember that booking in advance is essential. Aptly named Honours Brasserie is perfect if you’re looking to add an extra touch of class to your family graduation meal. The brasserie serves French-Scottish fusion food and independent owner chef Martin Wishart has a Michelin Star to his name. The white chocolate mousse is a must-try for dessert. Or, go all out, at Harvey Nichols. Book a table at the Forth Floor Restaurant for the ultimate dining experience. Take in the view of Edinburgh on one side and the Firth of Forth on the other as you feast on the finest Scottish produce. After you have finished your meal take a seat at the Forth Floor Window Bar and sip on a cocktail or have a second dessert at the Chocolate Lounge. The boozy fondue is not compulsory but highly recommended for a night to remember (or not).

After around four years of nights in the library, living off of noodles and waking up with the fear, you deserve a treat. Grab your parents and head for the shops. If you’re looking for some new shoes or a bag to get you ready for working life then head back to Harvey Nichols. The department store has everything you need for a true treat yo’ self moment (cheers maw). We recommend exploring all four floors of shopping before choosing your graduation gift. Stop at the MediSpa on the second floor to take the stress of your degree away. BEST COFFEE

After all the excitement (read: partying) you’re bound to have a hangover. Apparently healthy food and water is a good cure; we believe in the power of coffee. Cult Espresso is good for no-frills, classic coffee. This cosy café was opened by a father and son duo after the success of their coffee kiosk in South Queensferry railway station. The duo make coffee with a difference by using beans from a Bath-based roastery rather than importing them from further afield. Then there’s Brew Lab. This place will take you straight back to uni, based in an old University of Edinburgh building and opened by two of the university’s graduates. Relax on one of their leather sofas

BEST BAR

After the ceremony is over and you’ve handed your gown back, ditch the family and head for the closest pub with your friends. It’s time for the real celebrations to begin. Yaldy! For wine, cocktails and a great selection of tequila, swing by Bramble on Queen Street. This bar is at basement level so it’s easy to miss if you’ve already had a drink or two. Make sure you try its namesake cocktail before you head home for the night. Copper Blossom is the number one stop for classic cocktails with an edgy twist. Get drinks and a show with smoked cherry wood, dry ice and foam to accompany your cocktail. This is the perfect location for getting the latest gossip from your friends before they leave for summer or a grad job. If the sun is out head to The Pear Tree for a pint in the beer garden. This classic pub is perfect for a lad’s night, but make sure you get there early to grab a table outside.

Copper Blossom

with a cup of filter coffee which they prepare by hand. This is the perfect location for coffee buffs – there’s even tasting notes up about each different coffee they serve.

BEST HANG OUT

In the lead up to graduation, or after the big day, it’s important to find time to relax. After studying and losing sleep for years you deserve to chill out. It could be the last time you get to do nothing before starting your grad job. Book a table at Hemma in the Old Town for your brunch fix after the big night out. This Swedish cafébar has an award-winning menu featuring brioche French toast, sweet tattie scones and a full vegan breakfast. Hemma means at home in Swedish, the staff and atmosphere prove it deserves the name.

BEST WALK

If you’re about to leave Scotland’s capital city for good take a day to see the sights before you leave. There’s no better way to bid adieu to Edinburgh than spending a day climbing Arthur’s Seat (plus, the fresh air is a great hangover cure), wandering through the streets of the Old Town and walking around the Royal Botanic Gardens before watching the sun go down with your mates in the Meadows. Cry, Auld Reekie it’s been totes emosh.

BEST GRADUATION RESTAURANTS

Whether you want to treat yourself to that pasta dish you order in once a week, in the actual restaurant, or want to try something different, Glasgow is brimming with eateries that will please even the pickiest parent or younger sibling. For a cosy family graduation meal in town, La Vita is the best bet – everyone likes Italian food, right? And with La Vita being the winner of Glasgow’s Best Italian Restaurant award, you know you won’t be disappointed. Celebrate with their signature Drumstick cocktail, if you want to go all-out. Red Onion, Nippon Kitchen and Chaakoo are also great city centre restaurants. For a west end graduation celebration with all your pals, why not hit up The Chip? After all, you’re not picking up the tab, and the Ubiquitous Chip has the best graduation meal going. Priding themselves as the birthplace of modern dining, head to the rustic, earthy tones of The Chip situated in the heart of Ashton Lane to show your ‘rents a touch of class – all before stumbling into Jinty’s.

BEST BARS FOR A CELEBRATION

Glasgow is well known for being packed with great places to go for a

beer or cocktail, so you’re spoiled for choice. If you’re a rum drinker, head to Tiki Bar & Kitsch Inn for a classic piña colada, or spice things up with a blue Hawaiian. The cocktail mugs are reason enough to go. If gin is more your thing, then Gin71 is the bar for you. Tearoom by day, it transforms into a refined cocktail bar by night – perfect to visit with the parents, or for a casual catch up with friends. If it’s pre drinks you’re looking for, there’s no better place than Nice N Sleazy. Grungy and atmospheric, it’s the perfect place for a natter before heading out to the dancin’. It’s also a great place to go to catch an up and coming band – you never know,

CITY GUIDE you could witness the next Arctic Monkeys… We’d also highly recommend Mango on Sauchiehall Street. With a menu full of exotic cocktails, from margaritas to mojitos, the vibe inside will have you ready for a boogie in no time.

BEST MUSIC

Glasgow is world-renowned for having a thriving music scene, with the venues to deliver the best talent around. King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut is one of the venues that many of the up and coming bands play, with previous acts including The View, Biffy Clyro... oh, it’s also the spot Oasis were signed. No biggie. The venue has been shining a light on the best of Glasgow’s talent since 1990, and shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. Get the best of both worlds at Broadcast on Sauchiehall Street. Chill upstairs with a quiet drink, before heading down to the basement for a show you’re not likely to forget.

BEST POST-NIGHT OUT SCRAN

Only the best nights out end up in Blue Lagoon: just ask Justin Bieber, who ended up there after a show in 2016, and ordered the iconic haggis supper and a deep-fried mars bar. If it’s good enough for the Biebs, it’s good enough for us. The Howlin’ Wolf on Bath Street is another great option. With a kitchen that’s open until 2am, you can satisfy your drunken cravings with the best sweet potato fries in the city, or a bowl of chicken wings.

Gin 71

worry – they can grab their daily coffee fuss-free, and still make it on time. Impress your newly vegan sister with a trip to Serenity Now on Great Western Road, and sample some of the delights on the fully plant-based menu: we’d recommend going full Leslie Knope and trying the waffles. The café is dog-friendly, too – what more could you possibly need?

WILDCARD

Who doesn’t love pancakes? The best of all breakfast foods, if you ask us. Well, now Glasgow has its very own dedicated pancake restaurant, with over 12 million possible combinations of pancakes. We’re drooling just thinking about it. Stack & Still opened in Glasgow last year, and ever since, it has been flooded with pancake enthusiasts. Choose from savoury or sweet pancakes, with as many different

sauces and toppings as your heart could possibly desire. The restaurant also has Scotland’s first selfdispense bar, so you can keep the drinks flowing. If you’ve not eaten yourself into a food coma at breakfast, we’d highly recommend another Glasgow gem. Everyone in Glasgow knows and loves Paesano, but if your family are visiting for a few days, it can be quite a novelty. And it’s so cheap, you can afford to treat the fam to an authentic pizza, without breaking the bank. Hey, it might sound grown up, but you’re a graduate now. Paesano

BEST COFFEE

Glasgow is full of artisanal coffee shops and roasters, so whether you need a caffeine boost before the ceremony, or are nursing a hangover the day after, it won’t be hard to get your fix. In town, you’re spoiled for choice. Gordon St Coffee is nestled into Central Station, so if your parents are running straight to your ceremony from the train, there’s no need to

CITY GUIDE

Spending an afternoon at the V&A is all fine and well, but you’ll soon be pulling in the big bucks at your grad job and it’s time to celebrate. We’ve got the run down on where to visit to stay chilled out, full of caffeine and merry (drunk) during graduation season sensible and celebrate student style one last time. Shots are compulsory. Head to Duke’s Corner for some real fun with your friends before everyone moves away for their grad jobs. The late-night bar is all about beer, BBQ and bands fit with a beer garden, fire pit and one of the best ranges of alcohol in Dundee. Clarks, The Phoenix and Duke’s Corner also make good bar stops.

BEST GRADUATION RESTAURANT

Sifting through graduation menus trying to find one that the whole family will love can be more stressful than getting your dissertation printed on time. Go for gold with the awardwinning Castlehill Restaurant serving up a unique taste of Scotland. Using locally sourced produce this will put a smile on everyone’s face. Plus, it’ll look good on Insta. Or go French at Café Montmartre. An intimate, chic restaurant, this is the spot to go for a taste of French culture, and tasty scran.

BEST CLUBS

BEST GRADUATION RESTAURANT

Aberdeen has so many fantastic restaurants, but, if your parents are paying for your graduation meal: why not book a table at the spot you’ve dreamed of dining at, while eating beans on toast for the fourth day in a row? Who doesn’t love Italian? People pleaser! For classic Italian food in an authentic family-run restaurant, Rustico is the best bet. People have been known to order the tiramisu for all three courses, so keep an eye out for that on the menu. If tapas is more your family’s style, head to Café Andaluz, for more meat, seafood, veggie dishes and paellas than you could ever imagine. A sangria pitcher is a must-have. Struggling to choose? Yatai Izakaya for Japanese, Miller and Carter for classic steak or Shri Bheema’s for Indian are all great options, too. Scran for days.

BrewDog, Dusk Cocktail Bar, Orchid, Soul Bar and 99 Bar and Kitchen are also popular bars about town, so make sure to check them out.

If you’ve not been to Club Tropicana in the last four years at university, then we’re sorry, but what have you been doing? Throw yourself back to the 80s and dance the night away, or head to the Venga room for some cheesy 90s tunes. It’s time to Spice Up Your Life! If indie classics are more your style, head to Exodus above Triple Kirks, or give NOX or The Tunnels a try for something a bit more current.

TACKLING

DRINK SPIKING

We bet that you, or someone you know, has experience of drink spiking. It is a growing epidemic that can put people in vulnerable positions. Now, one group are tackling drink spiking head on

D

rink spiking is a dangerous epidemic that leaves victims vulnerable, unable to control their actions and can be a deeply traumatic experience. It occurs when someone puts a substance (such as GHB, Rohypnol or ketamine) into drinks without the consent or knowledge of a person. It’s almost impossible to see, smell or taste any difference in a spiked drink. Victims of drink spiking can experience lowered inhibitions, blurred vision, memory loss or ‘blackouts’, paranoia, vomiting and unconsciousness. The effects leave victims extremely vulnerable. In the worst cases, spiking can lead to a coma, and can even be fatal. There’s no denying that the thought of drink spiking can be daunting, but an end is imminent.

CAMPAIGN

In the UK, incidents of spiking have more than doubled in the last three years, increasing by 108 per cent since 2015. Almost 180 incidents took place in 2017 alone. This figure may seem small; however, experts and victims of spiking believe that the crime is massively under-reported. One University of Strathclyde student is taking matters into her own hands: creating the Girls Against Spiking campaign. The initiative is campaigning for unions and

mainstream bars and clubs across Scotland to provide lids for cups, in order to prevent spiking. Law student, Cara Teven, launched the campaign after realising how many people have been affected by the problem on nights out. “I’d heard all the stories about drink spiking in Glasgow and then one of my friends was spiked; that made me want to create the campaign,” says Cara.

“It really can happen to anybody, no matter how old you are, which is one of the most dangerous things about it”

ACHIEVEMENT

“I’m aiming to get all the student unions involved, because I think students are particularly vulnerable to it: many have just turned 18, and maybe don’t have lots of experience going out,” explains Cara. “But, it really can happen to anybody, no matter how old you are, which is one of the most dangerous things about it.” During the first week, the campaign made its first big achievement: Strathclyde University Union announced that it would start supplying lids for all drinks served at their bars. One of the main stumbling blocks of the campaign has been the amount of single-use plastics the additional lids consume. However, the campaign promotes the use of biodegradable lids made from plants, and is actively searching for an environmentallyfriendly alternative. It’s hoped that

more publicity for the campaign would prompt companies to provide for the demand in eco-friendly plastic lids.

SUPPORT

After gaining so much momentum, the campaign has also received support from high places. Back in December 2018, Police Scotland formally gave their endorsement to the campaign, which hopes to boost its credibility. “I think it’s a great campaign,” says assistant chief constable, Gillian MacDonald. “It’s such a simple notion, putting lids over the drink to prevent anything being put in it, so we were really pleased because prevention is always better than cure. Any steps that can be taken to help prevent drinks from being spiked we will

18 THE STUDENT BIBLE

HEALTH

absolutely be supportive of.” Though the campaign is keen to avoid victim blaming at all costs, there are key steps people can take to reduce drink spiking. “Asking for a lid for your drink is the first step,” urges Gillian. “Even if the premises don’t have lids available, it will alert them to the fact that their customers are starting to ask for them, so they’re probably more likely to get them in the future.” Other solutions include never leaving drinks unattended, keeping an eye on friends’ drinks, and refusing drinks from people you don’t know.

UNDERREPORTED

It can be hard for the police to know how many people are affected by

drink spiking, as many don’t come forward to report their experiences. “We do think this is an area that is underreported,” continues Gillian. “People who have been spiked have had large parts of the evening blacked out for them, so they can’t remember it and they have difficulty recalling where they were and what happened to them. That can put them off reporting because they think ‘I don’t know what I’m going to tell the police because I can’t remember anything.’ “That’s absolutely normal, please do come forward and report if you think you’ve been spiked. We’ll carry out an investigation and help join the dots in terms of the missing time frame. We’ll speak to friends, check CCTV and use early evidence kits to tell us whether

an additional substance is present.” Remaining vigilant on nights out and reporting any suspicious activity to bar staff can deter perpetrators from attempting to spike anyone’s drink. But this doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun out on the town. Cara encourages: “If you’ve had your drink spiked in the past, it can cause trauma and a fear of going out. We know you’re out there, and that’s why we’re trying so hard to push this campaign, to make sure there are safe places to go for a night out.”

THE FESTIVAL HOTLIST

Grab your tent, wellies and glitter: festival season is almost upon us! Yaldy. We have the details on this year’s hottest tickets

I

t’s over 10 degrees out and some guy in Kelvingrove park just screamed taps aff which means it’s almost summer. Summer means festival season and 2019 is no different. There are hundreds of music festivals in the UK every year providing plenty of opportunities to make bad decisions, spend time with your pals and lose your tent. Whether you’re more into rock, pop or indie, would rather not travel or want to get away from your hometown for a while there’s something for you.

PARKLIFE

8 – 9 June Manchester www.parklife.uk.com Spread over 600 acres, Parklife is one of the biggest non-camping festivals the UK has ever seen. Cardi B, Disclosure, Christine and the Queens, George Ezra, Solange and more will play across eight stages over two days. This year Parklife has stolen our hearts with more than just music. When you purchase your ticket, you’ll get three months of Apple Music for free, an ASOS discount code and free entry to the festival’s club series. Get your glitter roots done, Parklife 2019 is set to be the best one yet. You’ll find us at the VIP rooftop bar for the weekend.

ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL

13 – 16 June Isle of Wight www.isleofwightfestival.com Escape to the Isle of Wight this summer and experience island life like you never expected – with confetti and celebrities. One of the UK’s longest running music festivals, it’s all about being a festival for everyone. Go traditional and camp next to your pals in the cheapest tent you can find or go VIP with luxury backstage camping. You can even rent a vintage airstream for the weekend. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, George Ezra and Scotland’s own Biffy Clyro are headlining the main stage with newcomers like Freya Ridings and Sam Fender in the Big Top.

Scotland

Travelling down south for the UK’s biggest festivals is all fair and well, but we’ve got plenty to give at home. Forget the travel and grab a Tennents – we have the best crowds anyway.

TRNSMT

12 – 14 July Glasgow www.trnsmtfest.com Glasgow’s very own festival is turning three this year and throwing one massive party to celebrate. Here we, here we... The Dear Green Place will see Stormzy, Catfish and the Bottlemen and George Ezra headline the main stage while Circa Waves, The Hunna and Example rock the King Tut’s stage. The street food village from Platform is back with vendors to be announced, and the Utilita energy tree is getting an upgrade. We’ll be arriving early on the Friday to get a front row spot for Gerry Cinnamon. Belter!

harder to follow than Dua Lipa’s. A swearing ban for acts and a 10pm performance curfew is in place, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be just as fun without the naughty words in the raps. Travis Scott, A$AP Rocky and Cardi B are headlining, but we’re hoping baby Kulture makes an appearance. Make sure you head to see Stefflon Don and legendary radio DJ, Tim Westwood, too.

READING AND LEEDS

23 – 25 August Reading and Leeds www.readingandleedsfestival.com Arguably the UK’s hottest festival ticket, Reading and Leeds is back. The 1975, Foo Fighters, Post Malone and Twenty One Pilots are headlining both cities with more than 50 other acts across the weekend. One question: are you Reading or Leeds?

BELLADRUM TARTAN HEART FESTIVAL

1 – 3 August Belladrum Estate, Inverness www.tartanheartfestival.co.uk This year’s Belladrum theme is Sci-fi and the line-up is definitely out of this world. Jess Glynne is headlining with Chvrches, Elbow and Lewis Capaldi adding a Scottish touch. Along with all the classic Bella features, this year Lov Bella is launching – a pop-up restaurant serving brunch and supper to festival-goers. Belladrum is one for the true Scots out there. Plus, for less than £50 you can treat yo’ self to VIP and get access to a DJ after party, charging station, better toilets, quieter bar and so much more. We’ll be there.

SUMMER SESSIONS

7 – 18 and 16 – 25 August Glasgow and Edinburgh www.smmrsessions.com Fancy a day out seeing some of the best bands around minus the

camping? Summer Sessions is for you. Held in Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens and Glasgow’s Bellahouston Park, you don’t even have to leave your city to attend. The 1975, Foo Fighters and The Cure will headline three dates in Glasgow with bands like Twin Atlantic, You Me At Six and The Twilight Sad supporting. Edinburgh gets a longer run with Florence and the Machine, Primal Scream, Chvrches, James, Courteeners and Madnesss headlining, all with support acts to get you ready for the main event.

With around 30 different areas each year, the eclectic festival has something for everyone. This year’s line-up is bigger and better than ever. The Killers, The Cure and Stormzy will headline the main stage with Kylie set to take the Legend’s Slot and Janelle Monae will headline the West Holts stage on Sunday 30.

Hangover cures AROUND THE WORLD

Recovering from a wild one? We feel ya, that’s why we’re bringing you weird and wonderful hangover cures from around the world. Disclaimer – some might make your stomach turn more than tequila

T

here’s nothing worse than waking up after a night of jäeger bombs and drunken pakora wondering if you’re dead or just have the worst hangover of your life. It’s fair to say there aren’t many things that can cure a hangover apart from not drinking in the first place (how boring), but we do love to try. We’ve rounded up the weirdest hangover cures from around the world. Try at your own risk.

SCOTLAND

Possibly the most normal hangover cure on our list is Scotland’s humble square sausage roll and a bottle of black market Irn Bru complete with all 34 grams of sugary goodness. Head to your local café and ask for a roll and slice, Lorne or square and you’ll be set. The old recipe Irn Bru might be harder to find. Even if this doesn’t cure your hangover you can suffer happily knowing how jealous your friends are that you got your hands on a bottle.

MONGOLIA

The hangover cure Mongolians swear by might be harder to find than a roll and sausage. Dubbed the Mongolian Mary, the drink goes back generations in the country. The ancient remedy includes a pickled sheep eyeball soaked in tomato juice and is designed to cure aches and pains. Scientists have found that tomato juice helps the liver purge alcohol from the body, but no benefits to the addition of the eyeball. Next time we’ve hit the town a bit too hard we’ll skip the eyeball and head straight for the tomato juice. Or just order a Bloody Mary next time you’re at the pub.

POLAND

Poland are taking hair of the dog to a new level with their preventative hangover method. The trick is to follow every shot you take with a shot of pickle juice. Dubbed the pickleback method, it is thought that the brine in the pickle juice neutralises the burn of the alcohol and adds healthy additives back into your body. Don’t come running to us when you get kicked out a club for taking shots of homemade pickle juice at the bar.

HAITI

In Haiti you don’t have to drink or eat anything weird to cure your hangover. All you need is the offending bottle of alcohol that caused your hangover and thirteen black pins. The cork is effectively a voodoo doll. The black pins are pushed into the cork as a sort of black magic punishment for giving you the hangover in the first place. If, like us, you love a glass of wine before you head out this could be the perfect method for you.

Exams are almost over and we can already feel the sand between our toes. Regardless if you prefer a city break, hitting the beach or backpacking – we’ve got the rundown on gingerbread (sadly not edible). where you should go this Dubrovnik in Croatia has become summer, student style! one of Europe’s most-loved city

T

ime to get away from the stress of late night dissertation writing and stressing about how many graduation tickets you're going to get. Pack up shop, check your passport is still valid, and head to the airport: it's holiYAY time.

THE CITY BREAK

If you only have a few days to spare, or you’ve already drowned your money catching up with old friends in the local pub, a city break is for you. This year, it’s all about the rise of the alternative city break. Forget Barcelona, Rome or Dublin: we’re jetting off to Latvia and Croatia over that August bank holiday. Latvia’s capital city Riga is fast becoming a must-visit destination on the continent. Expect cheap beer and houses that look like

breaks over the last few years. Game of Thrones tours are pulling in big business, the mayor has even put a cap on the number of tourists that can enter the city every day. Wonder what Jon Snow would think of that? A walk down the famous Jesuit Stairs with your friend screaming shame behind you is a must, but there’s plenty more to do in the city than recreate your favourite GoT scenes. We recommend taking a stroll along the perfectly preserved city walls, visiting the Large Onofrio’s Fountain and chilling out on the beach.

THE BEACH HOLIDAY Hitting the beach with cocktail in hand more your scene? Then a beach holiday is the way to go. Greece is the perfect destination for good beaches and even better

Insta pics. The island of Crete is an affordable choice if you don’t fancy scraping the last of your SAAS together to pay for drinks. Head straight for Elafoísi beach to chill along the pink sand shoreline. If you’d rather party on the beach then Soúgia is the place to be with the local bars hosting parties after dark. If umbrellas and loungers are more your scene, Majorca is your next holiday destination. With over 260 beaches it’s the perfect place to relax by the water. The holiday hotspot has something for everyone. Head for Magaluf Beach if you want bars along the shore. Remember no carbs before Marbs.

THE PARTY DESTINATION

Did someone say girls’ holiday? Zante has taken Ibiza’s place as Europe’s hottest party destination. Head to the town of Laganas for turtle-spotting on the beach during

the day and wild parties at night. Hit up Cherry Bay Beach club to dance in a speedboat to 80s anthems or Waikiki Night Club if you want something with a little more class. The club doesn’t open until one in the morning and seems more like something you would find in London than Greece. Sunny Beach in Bulgaria is the latest up and coming holiday destination. Known for its cheap food, drink and accommodation, a pint will only set you back the equivalent of around one pound or less. Plus, its only half an hour from the airport so you won’t have to wait long for your first round of shots. There is 30 kilometres of beach and multiple waterparks nearby if you can handle activities during your hangover. Pre-warning: most of the streets don’t have names so wandering off by yourself isn’t recommended. There is a KFC and a McDonald’s by the beach making it the perfect

destination if you like your drunk creature comforts.

THE TRAVELLER

Sometimes one destination isn’t enough. Make the most of your summer holidays and fly, drive or get a train across Europe. Interrailing (www.interrail.eu) has long been known as one of the best ways to travel around the continent. Head abroad for a week to three months with this ticket, just pay for the number of journeys you want to make before you go. This method is cheaper than booking separate trains yourself and great for groups who want to see as much as possible in one holiday. We’re loving the new Greek Islands Pass that lets you hop between 53 Greek islands and even travel to Italy, all with one ticket. If trains aren’t your chosen mode of transport make it a road trip around the parts of Europe you’ve never been on the annual family

holiday. The most important part of a road trip is planning. If you don’t have your own car, renting abroad can be expensive, especially if you’re under 25. Companies like Space Ship (www.spaceshipsrentals.co.uk) provide tools to plan your trip including your route, how long to spend in each destination and what to see while you’re there. You can even rent a car, van or motorhome from them so any impromptu adventure is covered. No matter if you want to hop on the next train or get behind the wheel: make sure you book accommodation in advance. Booking a private room in hostels is always safer and still super affordable, especially if there’s a group of you travelling. If you're heading back to continue studying, starting your grad job or still figuring it all out, take a break and enjoy some sun! THE STUDENT BIBLE 27

Pasta, who doesn’t love pasta? If you know someone who doesn’t like pasta then, hate to break it to ya, they’re not to be trusted. The Body Coach is here to bring you the tastiest veggie lentil Bolognese that is sure to leave your taste buds watering and your purse strings singing.

Serves: 2 Time: 30 minutes INGREDIENTS

2 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, finely chopped 2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped into cubes salt and pepper 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 sprigs of rosemary 200g dried green lentils glass of red wine 2 x 400g tins of chopped tomatoes 1 tbsp tomato puree 60g walnuts 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar cooked pasta of your choice and grated cheese, to serve – optional

METHOD

1. Add the oil to a saucepan over a low heat. Tip in the chopped onion and carrots, along with a pinch of salt and pepper. 2. Cook for six minutes until mostly softened. Stir in the garlic and rosemary sprigs and cook for another minute until it smells fragrant, then tip in the lentils. 3. Give everything a good stir, then pour in the red wine. When most of the wine has bubbled off, chuck in the chopped tomatoes, then re-fill one of the tins with water and pour it in. 4. Stir in the tomato puree then leave to cook for 20 minutes, until the sauce has thickened and the lentils are soft. 5. When the lentils are nearly cooked, toast the walnuts in a dry frying pan over a medium heat until lightly

Five minutes with…

There’s a phenomenon happening: we’re drinking more protein shakes and doing HIIT sessions instead of downing pints. Why? Well, The Body Coach might have something to do with it. Joe Wicks shares how you, aye you, can get lean in 15 with his latest book: Veggie Lean in 15

How did you first get into cooking? Before I started out, I couldn’t even boil an egg. Then I started experimenting with food more, posting 15 second recipe videos onto Instagram. Veggie Lean in 15 is my seventh book so I’ve had a lot of chances to work on different recipes, becoming a better cook each day. I now love having the family round, cooking for them, too. I don’t know how I managed before!

how easy and fun veggie food is so decided to take it back to the Lean in 15 philosophy – 15-minute meals that are quick, easy and tasty. Why do you think more students are ditching shots to hit the gym? I think more of us now realise the health benefits of looking after ourselves. If you have a healthy diet and exercise regularly, you’re going to feel like you have more energy, making it easier to study and put in the hours needed to do coursework and pass exams.

“Before I started out, I couldn’t even boil an egg”

It’s a common misconception that cooking veggie is difficult. How does the book show tasty ways to cook veggies? My first three books were part of the Lean in 15 series. All the recipes took 15 minutes and were really easy to make. Then I started experimenting with longer recipes, recipes that I could spend a bit more time on and cook for the family. But for my seventh book, I wanted to show

How will your new recipes inspire more people to go veggie? Just like I used to, some people still think veggie food is boring. It’s far from it and these recipes prove it. There’s also this idea that veggie food doesn’t give you any energy. All I can say is that after eating veggie food, I feel energised, light and ready to smash out a HIIT workout.

First timers

For students who have never cooked before, what advice do you have for them to get into the kitchen? Prep like a boss! If you plan your meals, you can spend one evening cooking, then pop the left overs in a few containers and have them for lunch and dinner the following days. My recipes are so easy to follow and take no time at all. If you’re used to having takeaways and beans on toast on a regular basis, you will definitely feel different if you start cooking healthy food. Once you start, you won’t want to stop. Cooking healthy food is much cheaper than buying takeaways or fast food so you’ll be saving money in the long run! On the shopping list? Fresh greens, chickpeas, mushrooms, onions, stock cubes, rice and pasta.
