September 2003 Volume 63 No. 1
President’s Corner By Susan Fifer Canby, sfiferca@ngs.org On a lovely Saturday morning in July, more than 30 of your DC/SLA leaders came to plan and collaborate on goals for 2003-2004 over brunch on my deck. Despite the distraction of birds, food and catching up with each other, we were able to focus on the following goals for next year: Developing Leadership The DC/SLA Board and I will be working to involve YOU in our organization. When we call for help, please say yes! When you see a program that interests you, mark it on your calendar and come! Better yet, invite a colleague to join you. For DC/SLA to work for you, YOU need to participate on some level. We all have busy lives and careers, but doing something does make a difference. It can be chairing, participating, encouraging others, or just showing up. One of the reasons I agreed to be your President is to make the opportunity to get to know more of YOU. When you come to meetings please introduce yourself if we haven’t met; if we have, check in! Communicating with You Just as your website at work is becoming the portal to your library and its services, the DCSLA website is becoming our portal to our organization. This year Cassandra Shieh (our new webmaster) and her team will be enhancing our website with useful forms, photos, new pages, and archival information. Immediate Past President Anne Caputo will be updating our chapter’s history and adding that to the website. Frederick Heller will faithfully ensure our calendar is up to date.. Judy Grosberg will be ferreting out of the archives the key documents and photos that need to be added to the web. Cynthia Holt, our newsletter editor, will be encouraging YOU to develop substantive articles for Chapter Notes. Georgeann Higgins will see that there is someone to report on our meetings. Kelley Weber will assist Cynthia Holt with the newsletter and continue to solicit ads from sponsors for our newsletter, while she and I explore ways to improve the listserv. Secretary Susan Fournier will be keeping you current on our Board minutes via the web. Director Joan Gervino, Jean Tatalias, Catherine Kitchell, Anne Caputo and Larry Guthrie will survey you about your changing interests and update our strategic plan. Donna Scheeder will be looking for help on awards and will first write up descriptions of chapter awards and past award winners. Eileen Deegan was our representative to the DC Directory committee, which is due out this month. She has agreed to help us make it available electronically so we all have better access to where we are! Offering Diverse and Collaborative Programming With new leadership at SLA headquarters (including the new SLA executive director, Janice Lachance as well as on the SLA management team), Vice-President President-Elect Sheryl Rosenthal and Hospitality Chair Barbara Folensbee-Moore have lined them up to join us for the New Member Reception to be held at the new City Museum on October 22. For September Sheryl has scheduled numerous dine-arounds – pick one near you. Watch the web calendar for some programs we will do with other local organizations. Meanwhile Cynthia Kahn has set the fall book club meeting for September 18 to discuss Alexander the Great’s Art of Strategy. Alison Ince and her committee will be helping us to evolve Career Day into Career Transition Day on January 10 at the DC Public Library, to advise librarians who are switching careers, are hurt by downsizing, or looking for a non-traditional library career. John Latham and Bill Turner are building a new employment portal for the website, will be organizing networking sessions on career and employment topics, and are considering a DC chapter employment bulletin board. Director Alphonse Vinh will be working with the
