President's Corner: An Abundance of Accomplished Members Submitted by Shirley Loo, sloo@crs.loc.org
December 2005 Volume 66 No. 4
Have you registered for the holiday party at the Mansion at Strathmore on Dec. 13? The mansion will be festively decorated, and we'll have some holiday songs around the piano in the music room with Past President Sue O'Neill Johnson. Perhaps you'll win one of the door prizes. You can get to the mansion by taking Metro to the Grosvenor-Strathmore metro stop or you can drive and park for free in the mansion's 80 parking spaces. For a few people like Chapter Notes Editor Barbara Ferry who live close by, walking is an option. We've invited members of the Maryland Chapter, the Virginia Chapter, DCLA, and ASIST to attend as well as library school students at Catholic and the University of Maryland. Come one, come all! [See page 7 for a picture of Strathmore!]

Do you know a colleague who might be interested in joining SLA? This is a good time to bring someone new into the chapter and grow our community. You know the value of SLA for your career, professional development, and networking. Membership Chair Kristina Lively will have a newly revised membership brochure on our chapter website shortly, and the brochure will be available at chapter events. The annual conference (http://www.sla.org/content/Events/conference/ac2006/index.cfm) will be in Baltimore in 2006 and members will have a reduced registration fee.

Moreover, SLA's Recruit-A-Member Campaign has begun. If you recruit a member, your name will be entered in a raffle for a full conference package and you will receive a President's Club lapel pin. The chapter with the highest number of new members will receive a free registration to the annual conference. Dues in 2006 will increase for members earning more than $35,000 so that dues for those earning less can be lowered. If your colleague joins in 2005, the current dues will be assessed. Community Outreach

As we approach Thanksgiving, we might consider our blessings as a chapter. An outstanding blessing is the fact that we have numerous members whose accomplishments have been honored by the association. For example, Barbie Keiser was honored with the SLA President's Award at the 2005 annual conference. Her citation states: “In 2004, Barbie led the SLA Washington, DC Chapter's outreach efforts with libraries and library school students in developing nations. She organized, promoted, and led the chapter twinning program, and demonstrated her own commitment to advancing the value of the profession in the process. Barbie's efforts to promote the cause via International Special Librarians Day resulted in donations for the purchase of archival supplies required for the restoration of the National Library and Archives of Iraq. More important, the campaign collected library and other journals - plus the portion of the SLA Information Center collection discarded when the association's staff moved to its new offices - to give to the library schools in Croatia, Cuba, and Zimbabwe that were adopted by the chapter. Barbie was able to send 22 boxes of publications to the adopted schools. For this, Barbie is highly deserving of the 2004 SLA President's Award.”

In addition, Barbie initiated the Brown Bag Lunch Series for our chapter and coordinated the programs for two years. For the 2006 series, she's come up with suggestions for the chapter to consider. In scanning the SLA web page listing past recipients of the SLA President's Award, I recognized these names: Catherine A Jones (1987) and Sue O'Neill Johnson (2001).
