The President's Corner By Ellie Briscoe, DC/SLA President, ebriscoe@ngs.org In March, the Executive Board changed the nature of the Chapter's student loan fund. It became the Catherine A. Jones Memorial Student Assistance Fund, and future recipients will be given grants or scholarships, rather than loans. We are able to do this because of the existence of the Telesec CORESTAFF scholarship. By supplementing Telesec's generous support of library school students with an additional scholarship, we maintain the same level of funding to students that has been available in previous years. I gratefully acknowledge the contributions of two of our outgoing committee chairs. Terri Clark did a great job as membership chair this year. If you are a new member, you'll have received a packet of material welcoming you to the Chapter, and maybe a phone call as well. And Marisa Urgo, one of our two pioneering Internet Committee chairs, is also moving on. Marisa played a key role in getting the Web page designed, up and running. Thanks to you both! If anyone reading this is interested in finishing out the Chapter year in either of these soon-to-be-vacated posts, please get in touch with me (ebriscoe@ngs.org) or Daille Pettit (dpettit@ahma.com). As you make your plans for National Library Week, set aside a couple of hours to visit the World Bank on April 22 for the Global Village experience. Besides being a culturally enriching adventure, this project will help fund our Chapter's support of a third-world librarian's attendance at SLA's international meeting in England in the year 2000. And the NEXT day, April 23, is International Special Librarians Day. Every librarian can get a snappy button advertising this from HQ (check it out at http://www.sla.org/pr/order.html), so get yours and wear it with pride to the Global Village day! Return to contents
