The President's Corner: Chapter Scholarships By Daille Pettit, DC/SLA 1998-1999 President, dpettit@ahma.com Everyone - please note and spread the word! The DC Chapter of the Special Libraries Association is thrilled to be able to offer two scholarships to worthy ALA-accredited library school candidates. The first is the Telesec Scholarship for $2000 (funds for this scholarship were graciously donated by Telesec). Applicants for this scholarship do not have to be members of SLA. The second is a $1000 Chapter Scholarship. To receive this scholarship, the recipient does need to be a member of the DC Chapter of SLA. DEADLINE IS APRIL 16TH. If you are interested, or if you know anyone else who is, please contact Clare Maaseide, DC/SLA Student Affiliation Committee Co-Chair, at the American Public Works Association, 1301 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Ste. 501, Washington, DC 20004; 202/393-2792; cmaaseide@apwa.net. If you read this column after the deadline is past, please be aware that the DC Chapter plans on offering these scholarships again next year, and we are always looking for worthy candidates. Previously, the DC Chapter had a student loan program. Last year the board of directors decided that we wanted to "give back" to the profession by giving a chapter scholarship, rather than administering loans. We have enough money in our budget to provide scholarships for the next few years without any major fundraising efforts (which meshes into our chapter's goals since our focus for the next year and a half is raising money for Global 2000). When our "well" runs dry, the board will then decide whether to continue the chapter scholarship program and if so, how to raise money for it. In the meantime, we're delighted to be able to provide this service to our professional community. On another note, please plan to attend the Global 2000 benefits concert on April 30th. It should be a really fun event, and tickets are very reasonable! Because of the support of the World Bank/IMF Credit Union, ALL proceeds go towards our Global 2000 fundraising efforts. SEE YOU THERE. Return to contents

Minutes of the Feb. 9 DC/SLA Board Meeting The DC SLA Board met at the Center for Strategic and International Studies conference center on February 9, 1999. The President gave a report on the SLA Winter Meeting. At the town meeting session, they discussed the SLA name and if the word "library" or "librarians" should be in the name. For the discussion on committee structure session, Daille Pettit found out you are allowed to nominate yourself for an association committee position. April 24 is the Joint Spring Workshop. The topic is "Managing Web Access." The speaker and location are in the works. April 30 is the International Projects Fundraiser featuring a chamber music concert. Concert begins at 6:30 . May is the annual banquet. The President asked the Second Vice President to investigate putting the Chapter Manual on the website. The Treasurer presented on overview of the Washington DC Chapters Budget for fiscal year 1999. A copy of the budget was passed out at the Board meeting which was discussed. The budget was approved by the Board as presented and amended. Return to contents
