What’s Hot? DC/SLA members sizzle Posted on 07 July 2013.
by Marie Kaddell, DC/SLA President It’s July, and of course, it’s hot out there but what’s hot at SLA and DC/SLA? Well, when you look at an association, what really makes it sizzle is its members. DC/SLA members were on fire at the SLA 2013 Annual Conference: speaking at programs, presenting and moderating at events, and winning some major awards. I’d like to address some of these successes. Congratulations go to our DC/SLA award winners! Mary Talley was named an SLA Fellow. Aileen Marshall was named an SLA Rising Star. Marilyn Bromley won the Legal Division’s Thomson Reuters Westlaw Award for Career Achievement. It was excited to see so many DC/SLA members presenting, moderating, and speaking at the annual conference. Here are a few examples: Chris Vestal and Maria Kreiser cotaught a full day CE class, Patent Research: The Next Level. Greta Ober moderated a very successful and wellattended International Reception presented by the DC Chapter, Europe Chapter, Social Science Division – International Relations, Washington, and Arabian Gulf Chapter. James King and Marie Kaddell represented the DC/SLA Chapter at a Loyalty and Retention session. You can learn more about the Loyalty Project from this SLA Loyalty Project presentation. Rosalyn Alleman, Holly Kerwin, and Marie Kaddell were the panelists for Different Hats: Librarians in the Federal Government, moderated by George Franchois. You can read my speaker notes here: SLA 2013: Different Hats – Librarians in the Federal Government. Deborah Keller spoke as a panelist for Leadership Roles in KM: Grabbing New Opportunities! Anne Caputo and Donna Scheeder were on board for the Spotlight Session: The Experts Are In!: OneOff Career Advice. Larry Guthrie was a panelist for Organizing Disney: The Challenges of Unionizing the Happiest Place on Earth. Richard Huffine spoke at the Division of Government Information Business Meeting. But there’s more! DC/SLA Past President, James King is running for SLA Chapter Cabinet ChairElect and he needs our support. SLA elections are coming up in September. James is a highly engaged, energetic, and knowledgeable DC/SLA Chapter member. Here’s some detailed candidate information about James:http://www.sla.org/governance/boardofdirectors/boardcandidateelection/candidateforpresident electjamesking/. James will be speaking on the Loyalty Project as well as his candidacy for the SLA Chapter Cabinet ChairElect at our Chapter’s upcoming SLA Recap in late July. I hope to see you there. And more! Of course, we’ve already seen some other impressive DC/SLA Chapter member accomplishments. Earlier this year, Naomi House and Hannah Sommers were named 2013 Library Journal Movers & Shakers. And even more! Our DC/SLA membership is made up of an outstanding group of diverse professionals with many successes and accomplishments.
