The President's Corner By Daille Pettit, DC/SLA President, dpettit@ahma.com In the next few months, the Strategic Planning Committee, led by Kari Anderson, will be meeting to map out the future of the D.C. Chapter. It's been almost 10 years since our chapter developed a strategic plan, so it's certainly time for us to do another. One of the first things the committee will do is to survey chapter members to determine what you appreciate about the chapter, what activities you feel are relevant, what you don't like about the chapter, and what direction you think the chapter should take into the next millennium. In preparation for this process, I encourage you to spend a few quiet minutes now to analyze why you are a member of the Special Libraries Association. Does your membership in the D.C. Chapter provide you the opportunities to take advantage of that membership? In other words, if one of the major reasons you belong to SLA is for networking opportunities, do chapter events provide you with the right venue for you to network with the type of special librarians you want to meet? If not, why not? If your goal is professional development, is the chapter offering the kinds of programs you need for your own professional development? What the leadership of DC/SLA needs is member comments, suggestions and ideas, and a membership survey will be an excellent tool to get your input. Your feedback will be even more valuable if you've had a chance to think about what you want out of DC/SLA and if you're willing to express those thoughts to us. In the meantime, of course, you can always share your opinions with me at dpettit@ahma.com or call me at 202/289-3192. Return to contents

The Student Affiliations Chair met with the University of Maryland's Student Board. At the meeting, there was a discussion on merging the student ASIS and SLA Chapters. Since the ASIS chapter had a limited number of members, the merger would encourage more people to join ASIS. The Board decided this was not a chapter issue, but recommended the Student Affiliations group at SLA headquarters examine and decide on this issue.

News Libraries & the Newsroom: Strategies for Change The increasing importance of information access in the newsroom requires new alliances between the news library and the newsroom. At a "News Research & the Newsroom" seminar at the Poynter Institute in December, teams of researchers, editors and reporters from six newsrooms gathered to develop strategies for changing roles and relationships. Here's your chance to gain from and participate in an ongoing discussion that affects us all. Monday, February 1, 1999 12:30-2:00 (light lunch and drinks provided) Library of Congress Congressional Reference Division, Conference Room, Room LM 215 Madison Building 101 Independence Ave., S.E. To register, contact Ruth Leonard by January 22, The Washington Post, 202/334-6545 or leonardr@washpost.com. Limited to 15 participants. Return to contents
Global 2000 fellowships At this time of year it is good to keep charity in mind for the less fortunate and also to think about making tax deductible charitable contributions. We are just $162.60 short in reaching the Global 2000 goal of $6,000 before the end of the year. Thank you to Rea and Richard Austin, who have led the way for us by their $300 tax deductible contribution to the Global 2000 Fellowships. We have now raised $5,837.40 since April 1998 to send librarians from developing countries to the Global 2000 Meeting in Brighton England in October 2000.

Books for all! Got any foreign coins just sitting around? Send them as a donation to Books for All, an organization which delivers books to the poorest of children in developing countries. They deliver books by camel, donkey cart, whatever mode of transportation is available in their rural settings. It is a solid organization run out of Munich by a professional librarian, who receives no compensation, and spends all of her time working on the project. DC/SLA collected quite a few coins at the Christmas party. Special thanks to Telesec for their donation of $100 to Books for All. You can also order very attractive calendars featuring Books for All's work for children ($10 each) and note cards ($1 each). Send Sue O'Neill Johnson an e-mail at sjohnson3@worldbank.org if you're interested. Send foreign currency to Sue at 10957 Rocky Mount Way, Wheaton, MD 20902. Return to contents
