The President's Corner: SLA Winter Meeting By Daille Pettit, DC/SLA President, dpettit@ahma.com As president of your chapter, I recently attended SLA's Winter Meeting held in San Francisco, CA, January 21-23. President-elect Nancy Minter unfortunately was unable to attend as originally planned, but there were other members of our chapter there because of their division or national committee roles. The focus of the meeting was leadership training, and the days were crammed full of useful sessions: what is successful chapter and division leadership, the opportunity to observe SLA's board of directors in action, a description of fiduciary and financial responsibilities of SLA officers, how to do a strategic plan, who does what at SLA, and an explanation of the role of SLA's board. Fred Casey of SLA gave a presentation on the Global 2000 conference to be held in Brighton, England, in October, 2000. Because of the DC chapter's involvement in raising money for fellowships and creating selection criteria to identify fellowship candidates, I was asked to speak on these criteria. I also had prepared a packet of materials on what the DC chapter has done that could serve as a template for other chapter leaders to follow, and it was presented to the Chapter Cabinet. I then answered questions about our activities. Friday morning, the candidates for national office (those who were present) spoke briefly on their goals for the organization. It is a very impressive slate of candidates, and certainly SLA will be in good hands no matter who wins the election. Another exciting presentation was on SLA's new membership system that has lots of features every SLA member is going to enjoy. One very interesting activity (and, I believe, the first of its kind at a Winter Meeting) was a "Town Meeting" and discussion group led by SLA president Suzi Hayes on three main topics: 1) Should the association consider changing its name? 2) How should the board and the chapter/division cabinets be structured? 3) Should there be some changes in the current committees? Not surprisingly, the first topic received the most impassioned response, both in favor of the term "libraries" and against! I would like your thoughts on this and the other topics and will be posting them on the chapter listserv. All in all, it was a very interesting couple of days, and I hope to be able to apply what I learned to best serve our chapter. Return to contents

Return to contents DC Chapter Legal Division Members Seek To Form Group Margo Chisholm of Spiegel McDiarmid is proceeding with a process started last year to form a group for Legal Division members of the DC Chapter. A group is a formally recognized entity within the Chapter. In order to form the group several meetings to discuss the organization of the group and eventually adopt bylaws will be held. Larry Guthrie, the incoming national Chair of the Legal Division has graciously offered to host a brown bag luncheon meeting. The meeting will be held at the offices of Covington & Burling, 1201 Pennsylvania Avenue N.W., Washington, D.C. on March 24, 1999 at 12:30 p.m. All Chapter members are welcome to attend. An RSVP to Margo would be appreciated, but not necessary. The Legal Division group will seek to find areas of common interest with all Chapter members and develop a dialog that will lead to joint programs of benefit to Chapter members. Any suggestions that you might have, whether you are a Legal Division member or not, would be most welcome. Just let Margo know at 202/879-4055 or chisholm@spiegelmcd.com. Return to contents
