A native Californian, he began his library career at the California State Library in 1959. He also served for 2 years as Director of the Fresno Pacific University Library. Bob was active in SLA, having served on the SLA Executive Board from 1973 to 1976. He has also been active in DC/SLA, serving as Chapter President in 1972-73, among other activities.

Although all of us are busy, I hope that you will include some of DC/SLA's activities in your plans for the coming months. There's a lot happening in your chapter. The range of topics demonstrates the breadth of talent and the variety of programming we have available in our area.

On Thursday, September 17, the Military Librarians Group of DC/SLA is sponsoring a tour of Women in Military Service for America Memorial. The chapter's monthly meeting will feature

neighborhood dinners on Wednesday, September 23. The Information Technology Group is presenting a morning program on New Developments in Search Engines on Thursday, September 29 at the National Library of Medicine.

Our October program is a combined New Members Reception and a Welcome to the Special Libraries Board of Directors who will be in Washington for their fall board meeting. It will be held Thursday, October 22 at the Top of the Center CafĂŠ in Union Station. This reception is a wonderful opportunity to meet our chapter's new members and the national leadership. President Suzi Hayes and President-Elect Susan DiMattia have already accepted our invitation to attend. Details about all these events follow in Chapter Notes.

We also have the advantage of living and working in an area that has national conferences. On October 8, SLA and the Dialog Corporation are sponsoring Harnessing Intranet Potential, a distance learning videoconference. For more information, contact SLA Professional Development at 202/234-4700, ext. 649. The Online World Conference & Expo will be held October 12-14 at the Washington Hilton & Towers. Even if you can't attend the conference, visit the exhibit hall for a couple of hours to learn about the latest online developments. Finally, you'll be hearing a lot more about our various fundraising activities for Global 2000. The International Projects Committee has been meeting all summer and has some exciting events planned for the year. The committee's goal is to get 100% participation from chapter members either as volunteers or attendees at one of the events. Now is the time for you to get involved.

Your presence does make a difference.

Return to contents Dedicated to Helping Librarians in Developing Countries

By Sue O'Neill Johnson, sjohnson3@worldbank.org DC/SLA has started a campaign to raise money to sponsor librarians from developing countries to attend Global 2000 http://www.sla.org/conf/2000web.html, the international SLA meeting in Brighton, England in October 2000. We have already started our fund, with a goal to raising $15,000. We encourage everyone in the Chapter to participate and make a contribution, no matter how small. Our committee will plan fund raising events, involve other Chapters, develop selection criteria, select candidates and mentor those selected. The money will be used to provide transportation, registration, housing and food for the DC/SLA sponsors at the Conference.

by Elizabeth Cline, Arlington County Public Library The last issue of Chapter Notes described the DC/SLA has started the ad hoc international projects committee formed by DC/SLA. The goal of the committee is to raise money to send several librarians from developing countries to the Global 2000 conference in Brighton, scheduled for October 16-19, 2000. The kind of person DC/SLA hopes to send to the conference is exemplified by Zijad Sarajlic. Zijad, who is from Tuzla, Bosnia, was a Soros Fellow at the Library of Congress this past spring. He works at a combined public/university library in Tuzla, and also spent seven weeks at Arlington County Public Library, where he honed his reference and Internet skills. Realizing that the only way his library and other in Bosnia can make up for generations of missing information is though electronic access, Zijad was eager to learn as much as he could about the management and use of this access. He met with many staff members during his stay and received an overview of each department. One of the highlights for the staff was a meeting in which Zijad described his library and work in Tuzla, listened to his impressions of the U.S., and had an opportunity to ask questions about Bosnia. Zijad is also a published poet, author of Kayzerov Park, which was published in Sarajevo in 1984 and won an award as best publication by a young Bosnian author.

GUI Standard Icon Project Sponsored by IFLA Through its Information Technology Section, the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) is sponsoring a U.S.-Scottish Joint Project on GUI icon standards for bibliographic databases.

Phase III of this project proposes that the standard icon set concluded in phases I and II be moved into the standards domain worldwide to ensure its adoption for use in bibliographic information systems. Wilda Newman is the Project Lead, Phase III, and can be reached at wilda.newman@jhuapl.edu Return to contents DTIC Annual Users Meeting & Training Conference The Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) will host its 25th Annual Users Meeting and Training Conference on November 2-5 at the Doubletree Hotel National Airport, 300 Army Navy Drive, Arlington, VA. "Maintaining the Information Edge" is the theme for this year's conference. Sessions will address the information sources and changing technologies that impact those who are involved in Defense Research and Acquisitions. Keynote speakers include Lieutenant General David J. Kelley, Director, Defense Information Systes Agency; Mr. Carol Cini, Associate Director, US Government Printing Office; and Mr. Richard Luce, Director, Los Alamos Research Library. Mr. Louis Purnell, the luncheon speaker, will be relating his exploits during World War II as a Tuskeegee Airman.
